The post function is still using the old API nowadays – you can use the following call to post a note

GET https: // simple-note.appspot.com/api2/data/ [note key] / publish

The response must contain the publication key:

  {"publishkey": "xdAa5s"}

You can use the X-Simperium-Token header, like in Simperium, for authentication.

90,000 How to use Evernote for Slack – Evernote Help Center

How to use Evernote for Slack

With Evernote for Slack, teams can seamlessly share important notes and save their ideas and conversations to Evernote without leaving Slack.

How to add Evernote to Slack

To add Evernote to your Slack feed:

  1. Go to evernote.com/slack
  2. Click Connect to Slack
  3. Allow Evernote for Slack to access your account

After you’ve connected your accounts, open Slack to view a welcome message with Evernote tips and tricks.

Using Evernote for Slack

You can use Evernote for Slack for:

  • Quick Notes Recordings
  • Save Slack Messages
  • Search and share from Evernote
  • Sending links to notes

All actions can be used on public channels, private channels, general channels, 1: 1 messages and multi-user direct messages.

Create Quick Notes

You can write notes in Evernote without leaving the conversation. A note will be created in your default “Note to Me from Slack” notebook, and every time you create a new note, text will be added to the end of that note. In Evernote, you can edit a note, rename it, move it to another notebook, or delete it if you no longer need it. If a note is deleted, the next time you use the command, a new note will be created.

To create a note, hover over the message and click the More Actions button (…), then select Create note … . You can add additional text to the note before pressing Create and save the note.

The second option is to use the / note command in slash. For example, if you type / note Add Poll to Program , a note will be created in Evernote with the text “Add Poll to Program” in Evernote.

Save Slack Messages

You can save messages to return to them later or save them to the archive. You can copy one message, the entire conversation, or several messages. To do this, click on the More Actions button (…), then select Copy messages … and select one of the options in the drop-down list. 90,000 It’s funny: I wrote a note, and a whole movie became a review of it. Namely … – Gazeta.Ru

Ridiculous: I wrote a note, and a whole movie became a review of it. Namely “Admiral”. Which accidentally fell into my hands.

The article was about the book “Kirza”, and the movie was about the same topic, but only broader: not so much about how soldiers and sailors get wild when they get out of the officer’s control and beyond the statutes, not to mention the criminal code , but about the irreconcilable struggle of estates and social strata, which is far from over.I like my comparison: Orthodox Red Army soldiers killed more Russian officers than all the Chechen fighters put together.

(If possible, please spare me from discussing the artistic merits of the film. Although, of course, it’s funny when a handsome Jewish boy and a peasant girl – blood and milk – portray Russian nobles, – according to this logic, in American cinema about the 19th century, we are shown blacks officers, well, out of political correctness. However, it is even more fun to look at Bezrukov-Yesenin in the role of Kappel, this is a wonderful cranberry, it is good because it contains a lot of vitamins, and now it is such a gloomy season).

Yes. Therefore, the whites, who are entirely officers in the cinema, episodes do not count, are wonderful people, they fought for the truth, but for some reason in the rear they have a rebellion of the Reds, and on whose side is victory, we seem to know.

And with ordinary whites – the trouble, they are not shown in the movies. Don’t know how to do it. By the way, I don’t know myself. This is a very funny and deep problem!

On the one hand, the Reds won. But on the other hand, the whites held out for a long time, tens of millions of ordinary soldiers fought for them! In percentage terms, there were much more of them than supporters of the Union of Right Forces and Yabloko combined!

They were!

But then everything got confused in the Oblonskys’ house.(After the best people were killed, expelled and imprisoned for a long time – in any case, the offspring that remained after them in Russia was, alas, small in number. maybe wonderful philosophers). The “noble ones” were mixed with the cook’s children. And they became the lowest layer of the pie. Thinking about this, I asked whites (here about skin color) in Africa, especially in South Africa – that’s how it is with them and why apartheid and segregation in the recent past?

They said that they tried to raise the blacks, teach them some rules of the white hostel, well, for example, not to shit in the entrances (social houses with free apartments). And then those blacks who have learned to observe minimal decency are accepted into the white company.

– And if you mix it? I asked innocently.

– There are few whites, they will not overpower and they themselves will learn all sorts of nasty things from the blacks, – they explained to me.

But of course, I knew the answer myself, I had already seen our Russian entrances. (Instead of “Russians” I almost wrote “Russian-speaking”, but here it would not be entirely accurate in meaning.)

Well, everything got mixed up, and something happened that African white racists were afraid of.The officers who once danced at balls in white gloves and kissed the ladies’ hands (“Admiral”) fell to the level of normal workers’ and peasants’ boys. Teachers and doctors were placed on the social ladder below tractor drivers.

Well, in short, we had a reality show: but what will happen if children who have failed students kill their teachers and establish their own rules? By the way, many people liked the show and still like it. Others even require continuation …

So, everyone in the army? In one where the officers pretend that they do not know anything about the life of the barracks, in which the young people forcibly driven behind the fence are having fun as they can, killing time and sometimes colleagues? “Kirza” against “Admiral” … The same revolutionary, that is, lawless soldiers build their little tsarist rudeness – within the unit.

Or wider.

Here we are commanded by officers now. And we live as if in a barracks. And so we heard from a high rostrum about hazing in the broad sense of the word – that there are bureaucrats (grandfathers) who do not live according to the charter (in the sense of the law) and, roughly speaking, are nightmares of business. Well, I wonder how to put things in order? What do they think about it? Curious in general, with whom do the Kremlin people associate themselves? Our officers? With the husband of Kolchak’s girlfriend, an officer who became a commissar, that is, as it were, serves the people, the majority, and hides his thoughts? And then all the same goes to the whites? With the revolutionary commissar who, before shooting the admiral and drowning him in an ice hole, grins and jokes about his personal life? Or maybe Kolchak himself is still a positive hero? I am inclined to the last thought by the fact that Channel 1 is involved in the film, which is nevertheless well versed in matters of propaganda and ideological support of the existing government, whatever it may be …

Or maybe everything is simpler? And the film was made on special order precisely for the sake of credits, those where it is explained that the common-law wife of the admiral after serving 37 years in the camps? One can imagine what the fighters for national happiness, for equality, brotherhood, freedom and justice did with her there. To describe it, so “Kirza” will seem like “Murzilka”. And here, of course, the suffering of Bakhmina with her 8 years or something will immediately fade away … After her release, she will have a very noble face, to the envy of not only the cooks, but also movie stars (see the ending of “The Admiral”).

And it becomes pleasant that we live in vegetarian times.

Kind of thanks to the party for that.

90,000 Notes on distant lands

Starting from the 15th century, Russian travelers increasingly visited exotic distant lands – India and China, Brazil and Persia, Alaska and Antarctica. They described the amazing nature, customs and life of local peoples, their customs and tastes. The material of the portal “Culture.RF” contains several exciting travel notes about adventures in overseas lands.

“Walking Beyond Three Seas” Afanasy Nikitin

Afanasy Nikitin. Image: chronolines.ru

30 years before the Portuguese Vasco da Gama opened the sea route to India, the Russian merchant Afanasy Nikitin reached the land of pearls and diamonds. Prior to that, he had been on business in Byzantium, Moldavia, Lithuania. In 1468, the traveler set off from his native Tver along the Volga to the Caspian Shirvan Khanate (today it is part of the territory of Azerbaijan). Not far from Astrakhan, the ships ran aground, the merchants were robbed by the Tatars, there was nothing to sell. However, Nikitin moved on: he lived in Derbent, Baku and almost a year in Persia.

In 1471 he crossed the Arabian Sea on a ship and arrived in India. Later Nikitin described the Hindus: “People are all naked, but their heads are not covered, and their breasts are bare, and their hair is braided in one braid, and husbands and wives are all black; I go wherever, but there are many people behind me, they marvel at the white man ”.The traveler lived in the Muslim Bidar and the Hindu sacred Parvat, in total he visited 12 Indian cities.

The merchant embarked on the return journey by sea through Ethiopia. Then, through Persia, he reached Trabzon (today – Trebizond in Turkey), where “what was good little thing – they ransacked everything” . Having crossed the Black Sea, Nikitin ended up in the Genoese Cafe (today – Feodosia), where he met compatriots and went home with them.In 1475 Afanasy Nikitin died on the road near Smolensk. The notebooks with his “Walking Beyond the Three Seas” were sold by fellow travelers to the Moscow clerk Vasily Mamyrev. In the 1480s, these records were included in the annals.

“Description of the first part of the universe” by Nikolai Spafari

“Description of the first part of the universe, called Asia, which also includes the Chinese state with its other cities and provinces” was compiled by the diplomat and traveler Nikolai Spafari in the 17th century. In 1671 he entered the civil service, and four years later went on a mission to China.

Negotiations on the establishment of the Russian-Chinese border have failed. But the diplomat fulfilled another task: he described in detail everything that was encountered on the way. He marked all the settlements that he passed “from the city of Tobolsk to the very border of the Chinese state” , mapped the river, made the first scientific description of Lake Baikal. For three and a half months in Beijing, Nikolai Spafari collected a variety of information that could be obtained: about the economy, inventions, traditions. He wrote about the custom of Chinese women to bandage their feet: “And it is surprising that in such a reasonable people … women’s legs are pressed, and for this they endure great torment in order to please their husband” . And about matchmaking in wealthy Chinese families: “A husband gives a dowry to his wife, and the wife’s parents give the same or more, and neither the groom sees the bride, nor the bride sees the groom, and there is no conversation between them until the parents they will talk to each other through messengers ”.

Spafari’s Notes were popular with Russian readers and until the 19th century remained the country’s main source of information about China.

“Notes on the Unalashkinsky Department Islands” by Ivan Veniaminov

About other medieval travelers – in the material

In 1639, the Cossacks led by Ivan Moskvitin first went to the Pacific Ocean. In the following centuries, Russian explorers moved further and further to the northeast, and in 1732 they first landed in Alaska. In the capital, they learned about the new lands from “formal replies” and “fairy tales” – this was the name of the reports and explanatory notes. Descriptions of Russian America appeared only in the 19th century. One of them was the priest Ivan Veniaminov – he served in the Aleutian Islands and Alaska from 1824 to 1839.

Veniaminov published notes in which he spoke about the local nature and customs of the aborigines – Aleuts and Tlingits. For example, to keep wives and daughters in obedience, Aleutian men performed a secret ceremony and staged the appearance of demons.

“This action can serve as proof of how easy it is to make unenlightened people believe anything – and how skillfully and firmly savages are able to maintain their superstition and keep the secrets of it.”

Ivan Veniaminov studied the Aleutian language, created an alphabet for it and became the author of the world’s first scientific works on non-Indo-European languages. The missionary translated books for the indigenous population, organized smallpox vaccinations, which made it possible to stop the epidemic here. In 1840, after the death of his wife, the priest was tonsured a monk under the name Innokenty and was appointed Bishop of Kamchatka, Kuril and Aleutian, and in 1868 – Metropolitan of Moscow. In 1977, almost 100 years after his death, he was canonized.

“Journey Around the World” by Ivan Kruzenshtern

The first Russian ships to circumnavigate the globe were “Nadezhda” and “Neva” under the command of Lieutenant Commanders Ivan Kruzenshtern and Yuri Lisyansky. The diplomatic expedition had so many people willing to enroll in the crew that, according to Kruzenstern, he “could equip many large ships with selected sailors” . On July 26, 1803, the sloops left Kronstadt, and four months later ships under the St.Andrew’s flag crossed the equator for the first time in history.

Ivan Kruzenshtern. Image: wikipedia.org

The book by Ivan Kruzenshtern “Traveling around the world on the ships” Nadezhda “and” Neva “has become one of the most striking literary evidence of the golden age of the Russian fleet.

Kruzenshtern described in detail the stop on the island of Nukagiva in the Pacific Ocean: “As soon as we dropped the first anchor, suddenly our ship was surrounded by several hundred islanders by swimming, offering us coconuts, breadfruit and bananas in exchange … five coconuts or three and four breadfruit.Knives and axes were even more precious to them. They admired a small piece of iron hoop like children and expressed their joy with loud laughter. ”.

On October 8, 1804, Kruzenshtern’s ship was already in Nagasaki, where almost seven months had to wait for permission to negotiate with the Japanese authorities. Later, the “Nadezhda” approached Sakhalin, where travelers mapped the eastern coast of the island, and Kruzenshtern described the indigenous inhabitants – the Ainu. The expedition discovered several islands and straits of the Kuril ridge and circled Africa. The voyage lasted 3 years 12 days.

“Notes of Captain Golovnin’s fleet about his adventures in captivity with the Japanese”

Lieutenant-Commander Vasily Golovnin commanded the sloop “Diana”. In 1811, the team was supposed to explore the Kuril Islands. On the island of Kunashir – after the failure of the diplomatic mission – the commander, two officers and four sailors were captured by the Japanese and transported to the island of Hokkaido. The Russians spent more than two years there.

The Japanese assigned to the prisoners learned Russian.Golovnin described a lot of curiosities in his book: “… they brought to us the following inscription written on Japanese paper:” There was a Russian frigate “Juno” here and called the local village the Village of Doubt “… which now they need to have a translation. When we assured them that not a single Russian would understand the true thoughts of the author of this inscription, why he gave such a name to the village, they apparently doubted and wondered if we were deceiving them ”. The sailors were measured so that the capital would recognize “the height of such tall people as Russians” .The emperor was sent portraits of the prisoners, in which they all looked the same – “except for our long beards, there was nothing like any of us here” .

To free his compatriots, naval officer Peter Rikord captured the influential Japanese merchant Takadai Kahei. Kakhei persuaded the authorities to release Golovnin and his colleagues.

The next time Russian diplomats visited the Japanese islands only in 1853 – 40 years later. Then the first agreement was concluded between the countries. One of the crew members was the writer Ivan Goncharov, who published sketches about the voyage under the title “Frigate” Pallas “.

“Discovery of Antarctica” Thaddeus Bellingshausen

Thaddeus Bellingshausen. Image: ocean-media.su

Ancient scientists had guessed about the existence of the Southern continent. The Spaniards and the Portuguese were looking for it, and in the 18th century the Englishman James Cook circumnavigated the Southern Ocean and suggested that the continent “if it can be discovered, then only near the pole, in places inaccessible for navigation” .The last of the Great Geographical Discoveries was made by a Russian expedition led by Thaddeus Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev. In 1831 Bellingshausen’s notes “Two-time surveys in the Southern Arctic Ocean and sailing around the world” were published, which are being republished today under the title “Discovery of Antarctica”.

Slots “Vostok” and “Mirny” left Kronstadt on July 4, 1819. Six months later, the expedition reached the Southern Ocean, in January 1820 the sailors were only 20 miles from the coast of Antarctica. They discovered 29 new islands, measured the temperature of the water at different depths, and described the fauna of Antarctica. Vasco da Gama saw penguins in South Africa at the end of the 15th century, so meeting them was not a surprise for Russians. “Astronomer Simonov and Lieutenant Demidov went on a skiff to the island to catch penguins” , Bellingshausen wrote.

“Vostok” and “Mirny” walked around the southern continent, visited the islands of Polynesia and Australia. The expedition returned home on July 24, 1821, the voyage lasted 751 days.

Brazilian diary of Grigory Langsdorf

In 1914–1915, the Russian ethnographer Heinrich Manizer discovered in the Museum of Rio de Janeiro exhibits surprisingly similar to those that he came across in the Ethnographic Museum of the Academy of Sciences marked Langsdorff. Only in Brazil did Manizer learn that that was the name of the man who collected materials about the Amazon in the 1820s. In 1930, the diaries of Grigory Langsdorf were found, shedding light on forgotten pages from the history of Russian science.

Botanist and zoologist Grigory Langsdorf participated in the first round-the-world voyage led by Ivan Kruzenshtern and Yuri Lisyansky, and in 1812 he was appointed consul in Rio de Janeiro. The Russian government supported his idea to organize an expedition “to unknown regions of Brazil”, and a lot of money was allocated for it. Langsdorf himself took part in sorties only until 1828. After suffering a fever, the scientist began to lose his memory. In the last months of his stay in Brazil, while still retaining his clarity of thought, he described the town of Diamantina, lost in the province of Mato Grosso: “Fogs, swamps, rivers, shallow lakes, springs and other obstacles make work in gold mines and on diamond placers very heavy.Malignant fevers, putrid fever, pneumonia, jaundice, dysentery — in short, all diseases that I have not seen anywhere else in Brazil. ” By that time, out of 34 members of the detachment, only 15 were healthy. Many members of the expedition drowned in rivers, died in tropical forests from disease and hunger.

Returning to Russia, Langsdorf resigned and moved to his relatives in Germany. For the last 20 years of his life, he was seriously ill. As a result of the expedition, samples of minerals and stuffed animals, drawings and manuscripts, household items of South American Indians and a huge herbarium – one of the most complete herbariums of tropical flora in the world – were delivered to St. Petersburg. Most of this collection has survived to this day.

Notes of the Automator

I have not yet written about the history of this blog. And now I decided that on the eve of the second anniversary of its existence, it would be time to reveal all the secrets.

Started still in November 2014. Then I just wanted to create a page “About Me” and hang it somewhere on the internet. Yes, since I am not a seasoned developer, at that moment I did not know how all this was done.To be honest, I had no idea how all these beautiful sites acquire sane domain names.

It all started with the fact that I learned about Github Pages and uploaded some insane piece of HTML file there in order to try how it works in general.

Then, while surfing the Internet for a free platform to create a blog, I stumbled upon Ghost blog. Actually, I liked it for its minimalism and the presence of a large number of templates. The only drawback is that publishing articles on Github Pages required the installation of some kind of staging utility written in Python buster .

In general, having mastered this toolkit November 16, 2014 , I posted the first note. From that moment on, an irreversible process began =)

I soon read the book Technical Blogging: Turn Your Expertise into a Remarkable Online Presence. There it is quite competently described how to make a blog and make money on it, but after trying to use the advice, I realized that all this is garbage, and you need to do it as your intuition suggests.Down with advertising and product placement!

Thus, gradually I laid out articles about the tools and approaches that I used on my projects. The blog gradually became overgrown with links to various resources, the number of readers gradually grew. On average, I published one post per week.

Soon, notes began to get into digests on DOU DOU and other sites related to test automation.

But there was also a technical component behind this.I was tightly tied to a platform that was tied to version of nodejs , and since I published articles using buster , I also followed versions of Python and fixed bugs in this hellish utility. In general, I could write and publish articles from only one laptop, which is in my home. The situation did not please me, but I could not find alternatives. There was Jekyll , tied to Ruby , but I didn’t want to change the awl for soap.

And just a month ago, flipping through the feed in Twitter , I came across JBake .

Naturally, my hands were combing and I started to move my blog to this platform. I was attracted by the fact that everything is written in Java , there is support for different templates: Freemarker , Groovy , Thymeleaf and Jade .

Moreover, on the Internet I found examples of how you can collect all this with the help of my beloved Gradle . Yes, it took me about 3 weeks to fully migrate the template and the entire site to JBake , but it was worth it.

Everything is still stored at Github pages , but now I am not tied to any platform and all I need is Java .

Notes can be written in simple files of the format .adoc or .md . Moreover, with the help of Travis CI , I got a complete Continuous Delivery process. All that is required is simply to open Intelij IDEA (!) , write an article or correct some file, make commit and push and in just a minute new changes will be published without any down time .

In general, I am very satisfied, I spent, of course, a lot of time on implementation, but I learned a lot of new things.

If you are thinking about creating your own business card site or blog, I recommend looking at JBake . Yes, you have to do a little programming, but the effort is worth it.

90,000 A solution that didn’t exist. How mathematicians have tried for over 350 years to prove Fermat’s theorem and what came of it

It took Wiles years of work and knowledge of the most modern branches of mathematics. He recently received what is called the Nobel Prize for Mathematicians for this achievement. At the same time, the formulation of Fermat’s theorem is extremely simple: it claims that there are no integer values x , y , and z for which the equality x n + y n = z n for n greater than 2. This theorem was formulated by the French mathematician Pierre de Fermat in the 17th century. Reading the “Arithmetic” of Diophantus, he wrote down the equation in the margins, in the part of the book where it was about the Pythagorean theorem.

Marginal notes

The Pythagorean theorem is known to everyone who at least sometimes did not skip math at school: in a right triangle, the sum of the squares of the legs is equal to the square of the hypotenuse. The theorem was proved, as you might guess, by Pythagoras, and already his students proved that there is an infinite set of so-called Pythagorean triplets – integers for which the condition x 2 + y 2 = z 2 is satisfied. For example, 3 2 +4 2 = 5 2 or 99 2 +4900 2 = 4901 2 .

Fermat wondered: what if instead of squares in the formula there are cubes: x 3 + y 3 = z 3 ? Is it possible to find beautiful triples of integers for such equality? And if the exponent is 4? And if 5? Fermat argued that if the exponent is more than two, then such triples of integers do not exist. Fermat left an insidious note next to the formulation of Fermat’s theorem: “I have found a truly amazing proof of this proposition, but the fields here are too narrow to accommodate it.”What this proof was, he never told anyone.

In ordinary life, Fermat was a major provincial official, and he was engaged in science in his spare time. At that time, it was not very customary for mathematicians to share their results with colleagues. Fermat, on the other hand, stood out for his particular isolation even among his colleagues: he did not discuss his ideas with anyone, and when he managed to find an interesting solution to a complex mathematical problem, he amused himself by sending his fellow mathematicians the formulations of these problems, but not their solutions. He also did not seek to publish his mathematical calculations.

French official and mathematician Pierre de Fermat

The famous theorem did not sink into oblivion along with Fermat’s other discoveries only due to the fact that the eldest son of an eccentric amateur scientist, after his father’s death, undertook to publish all of his fragmentary notes. They revealed many interesting and important theorems for mathematics – often without proofs or only with sketches of such. Since then, they have all been proven, and only the equation, now known as Fermat’s theorem, stubbornly resisted.

A riddle for the ages

The simplicity of formulation and Fermat’s remark about proving the theorem have teased professionals and amateurs of mathematics for centuries. After all, Fermat had the same knowledge as his contemporaries, which means that to prove the theorem, it was only necessary to make some unusual move.

In the history of attempts to prove that the “necessary” triples of integers do not exist, sometimes there were small breakthroughs. So, a hundred years after Fermat, Leonard Euler managed to prove that the theorem is true for n = 3.Other mathematicians proved the theorem for several more special cases, or outlined possible approaches to solving the problem. In the second half of the 20th century, computers became available and mathematicians were able to show that Fermat’s theorem is true for values of n from 2 to 500, then the count went to thousands, then to millions, but all this still did not mean that Fermat’s statement was true for any values n .

Life’s work

This was the state of affairs when ten-year-old Andrew Wiles first learned about the theorem. He was fired up with the idea to prove it, and this idea did not leave the scientist throughout his mathematical career.

In the second half of the 1980s, Wiles focused entirely on Fermat’s theorem. He continued to teach at Princeton University, but refused to participate in conferences or any other public activity. Wiles did not tell anyone about his goal: firstly, he did not want to waste time on discussions, and secondly, if he succeeded, he would have got the fame alone. And thirdly, he could simply not be taken seriously – too many eccentrics and madmen had attempted to prove the Great Theorem before him.He understood that it would take him years of work and was afraid that if he talked about his work, at the last moment someone else would take the decisive step. In order not to arouse suspicion, Wiles used one of his studies on elliptic curves. It was completed, but the mathematician published it piece by piece, pretending to continue his research in this area. Wiles devoted only his wife to the secret of his real work, and many of the scientist’s colleagues began to believe that his “disappearance” was due to the fact that the poor fellow had exhausted his mathematical talent.

In 1988, while Wiles was working hard on his proof, the Japanese mathematician Ioichi Miyaoka claimed that he had succeeded in “breaking” Fermat’s theorem. Mathematicians around the world began to study Miyaoka’s calculations and, unfortunately for him, serious gaps in his reasoning were revealed, so Wiles continued to work.

However, by 1991, the mathematician had gone through all the tools available to him, and Fermat’s theorem still defied.Wiles had to end his hermitage to chat with colleagues and see if they had any new ideas that would be useful for his work. And such ideas were found – Wiles’s work got off the ground, and he already foresaw success, but the mathematician had to check all the calculations created. Wiles needed an expert with all the intricacies of his methods, but this meant that this man would have to be initiated into his plan. And Wiles confided in his Princeton colleague Nick Katz.

The expert had to understand the work that Wiles had been doing for several years. It was not easy to get to this volume of material, and Wiles and Katz found an elegant way out. Wiles announced a lecture course for graduate students with the rather vague title “Computing on Elliptic Curves.” In his lectures, Wiles detailed that part of the proof that he was not sure about and that needed verification. Only Katz knew what all these calculations were for, for all the other listeners it was just a course of lectures, moreover, extremely complex, very detailed and not very clear what it was applicable to.Gradually, the audience scattered, and in the end only Wiles and Katz were present in the audience at the lectures.

The theorem is proved …

The check made it possible to verify that there are no gaps in Wiles’ proof. In 1993, he was confident that everything was correct in his work. The scientist presented the result of his work at a major mathematical symposium in Cambridge at the end of June 1993.

The news that Fermat’s theorem had been proved made a lot of noise. Moreover, to complete the work, Wiles needed first to prove the so-called Taniyama – Shimura conjecture. For mathematicians, it is no less, and maybe even more important than Fermat’s theorem itself, since it makes it possible to establish a connection between branches of mathematics that previously seemed extremely distant from each other. There was a lot of hype in the press and Wiles became a celebrity.

… or not?

He sent his proof for publication in a scientific journal, and six reviewers began to scrutinize his calculations, which spanned 200 pages. One of the pieces of evidence went to Katsu for verification. Most of the reviewers’ questions were easily handled by Wiles, but Katz had a small question that the author of the proof could not immediately answer. And the more he delved into the explanations, the more obvious it became that this was not a small mistake, but a serious problem missed by Katz and Wiles, even despite the course of lectures they arranged on the most “problematic” part of the proof.

Wiles hoped to “fix” the proof by finding a way to eliminate the error, but he could not do it, and rumors spread among mathematicians that this time the proof of Fermat’s theorem did not stand up to criticism.Of course, Wiles had already done a lot of work, which gave many important results, but he wanted to prove Fermat’s theorem, and for him the error he found was a nightmare.

Wiles went into hiding again and worked with only one of the reviewers of his article (and a former graduate student), Richard Taylor. Taylor made a special trip to Princeton for this. Throughout the summer of 1994, they were looking for a solution to the problem and did not find it. Wiles was about to come to terms with defeat, but Taylor persuaded him to continue searching until October, when Taylor had to leave.

Not hoping to find a solution, Wiles at least decided to understand why a mistake had crept into his calculations. On the morning of September 19, 1994, a mathematician was sitting in his office studying the methods of proof he used, and suddenly it dawned on him. He realized what had to be done to make his proof work again. Finally, he was able to send an article with a proof of Fermat’s theorem, as well as a joint article with Taylor with the necessary additional proofs to the editors of the journal Annals of Mathematics .These works were published in 1995. Fermat’s theorem has been proven, now – without any doubt.

A grandiose joke

And yet, there is one mystery left in this story. For three and a half centuries mathematicians fought over Fermat’s theorem, and its proof required the use of the most modern methods and the proof of another important theorem, formulated only in the 20th century. All this simply did not exist at the time of Fermat. Did he really have a “truly amazing proof” of his theorem? There is a suspicion that not, because in Fermat’s notes there are traces of the search for solutions for n = 4 and n = 5, which would be superfluous if the mathematician had a general proof of the theorem. But even if the arrogant reclusive mathematician was wrong, the significance of the intrigue he created cannot be overestimated. The feeling that “the truth is somewhere nearby” inspired many mathematicians to search for solutions, and who knows how the fate of the theorem would have turned out if it had not been so popular.

Red strings of speech: from the notes of Ludwig Wittgenstein

In “Ad Marginem” there is a Russian translation of the notes of Ludwig Wittgenstein, a great philosopher who largely determined the development of humanitarian thought in the twentieth century. The thinker wrote down the collected aphorisms from 1929 to 1948 and, apparently, planned to publish it as a separate work. With the permission of the publishing house “Gorky” publishes some of the records presented in the collection.

Ludwig Wittgenstein. Zettel. Notes. Moscow: Ad Marginem Press, 2020. Translated from German by Valeria Anashvili

22. I point with my hand and say: “Come!” A asks: “Do you mean me?” I say “No; B “. – And what would be what I meant B (even if my indication would leave reason to doubt who I meant)? – I said these words, made this movement with my hand.Does something else have to happen for the language game to take place? But did I not know already during the movement of my hand who I mean? Did you know? Of course, according to the usual criteria of knowledge.

23. “By my explanation I wanted to achieve …” This goal loomed before me. In my mind, I saw the place in the book that I was targeting.

To describe intent means to describe what happened – from a specific point of view, for a specific purpose. I paint a certain portrait of the processes.

24. Instead of “I meant him ” you can also say “I talked about him ”. And how is this done: to talk about him with these words? Why it sounds fake:

“I spoke about him by pointing to him with these words”?

“To have him in mind” means something like: to talk about him. But not: point to it. And if I speak 90,020 about him 90,021, then there is certainly a relationship between my speech and him, but this relationship is contained in the use of speech, and not in the act of indicating. An indication in itself is only a sign, and it can control the application of sentences in a language game, and therefore notify what is meant.

25. When I say: “I saw a chair in this room,” I recollect a specific visual image, as a rule, only very approximately, which in most cases, however, has absolutely no meaning at all. The application of such a proposal does not take into account this peculiarity. And if now I say, “I meant N,” will it be the same? Does this proposal also ignore the specifics of the process?

26.If by some remark I allude to N, this – under certain circumstances – may be clear from my look, facial expression, etc.

That you understand the expression “hinting at N,” you can demonstrate by describing examples of such hints. And what are you going to describe? First of all, the circumstances. Then what was said. His look, etc. Then what the hinting wanted to achieve.

And if, by making a remark, I inform someone else about my feelings, ideas, etc.then it can complement a typical hint picture (or 90,020 one 90,021 of such pictures). But it does not follow from this that the expression “hinting at N” means to behave in this way, to feel this, to imagine it, etc. And here someone can say: “Of course not! We have known this for a long time. The red thread must run through all such phenomena. The red thread, so to speak, is intertwined with them, and therefore it is difficult to find it. ” Again, this is not true.

But it would be just as false to say that “hinting” denotes a family of spiritual and other processes.- Since you can ask: “What was your allusion to N?”, “How do you let others understand what you mean by N?”; but not: “How exactly did you mean by this statement the allusion to N?”

“I hinted at him in my speech.” – “What words?” – “I was hinting at him when I was talking about a man who …”

“I was hinting at him” means something like the following: I wanted , so that with these words someone would think of him. But “I wanted” is not a description of the state of mind, and “understanding what N meant” is also not such a description.[ Marginal note : However, they ask: “How did you hint at it?”, “What remark did you mean by it?”]

27. If the circumstances are ambiguous, is it then doubtful that I mean him? Whether I mean it by my statement or not, I do not judge by the circumstances. If I am not judging according to circumstances, then why? Yes, apparently, for nothing. I, of course, not only remember the circumstances, but also 90,020 interpret 90,021 them. For example, I can 9020 now depict my own sly glance 90,021, which was then thrown at him, but the implication of manifests itself as a completely intangible, subtle atmosphere of speech and action.(Suspicious image!)

28. During a conversation I want to show something; I have already started the pointing movement, but I have not done it. Later I say: “I wanted to show it then. I distinctly remember that I have already raised my finger. ” In the stream of processes – thoughts and sensations – this was the beginning of the gesture of direction.

Yes, if I completed the gesture and said, “He lies there,” it would not be an indication if these words were not part of the language.

29. “You moved your hand; do you mean something by that? “I think you mean that I should come up to you.”

So, he could mean something, or maybe nothing. And if the first, then the very movement of your hand or something else? Did he mean by his bodily expression something else, or did he just mean his movement with the “hand” and did he mean ?

30. Can you answer this way: “By this movement I meant something that I can only express by this movement”? (Music, musical thought.)

31. “Of course, I thought about him: it was as if I saw him in front of me!” – however, recognized him not by his appearance.

32. Imagine some acquaintance! – Well, tell me now who it was! – Sometimes the image comes first, and only then the name. And what, I guess the name by the similarity of the image to the person? – And if the name comes only after the image, was the representation of this person already present together with the image, or was it fully manifested only together with the name? But I do not draw the conclusion about the name from the image; and that is precisely why I can say that the idea of him arose already together with the image.

33. It is as if you are experiencing inclination, readiness (James). And why shouldn’t I call it that? (And some might explain what is happening here by muscle innervation, readiness to move, or even ideas about it.) Just do not consider the experience of inclination as an incomplete experience.

It often seems to us that the spirit, when understanding the meaning, makes small rudimentary movements – like an indecisive person who does not know which way to go, and uncertainly gropes for a field of possible applications.

34. Imagine people who, since childhood, are accustomed to making rapid sketches during a conversation: what they say – they immediately sketch.

Should I assume that if someone draws, describes or copies something on the basis of a representation or memory, he will certainly read the image from something ?! – How is this confirmed?

35. Guess thoughts. There are playing cards on the table. I want someone to touch one of them. I close my eyes and think of one of these cards; and the other has to guess which card I mean.- He, in turn, thinks of one of the cards and at the same time tries to guess my choice. He touches the card, and I say “Yes, it was her” or “This is not her.” A variant of this game: I am looking at a certain card, however, the other does not see the direction of my gaze, and he must guess which card I am looking at. It is important that this is a variant of the first game. Here it may turn out to be significant, as I think of the map, because it might turn out that the reliability of guessing depends on this. But if in ordinary life I say: “I just thought about N”, then they will not ask me: “ How did you think about him ?”

36. You can ask: “If someone had a chance to look into your inner world, could he see there that you wanted to say exactly is ?”

Suppose I wrote my intention on a piece of paper, then another can read about it there. And can I imagine that in some other way he will receive another 90,020 more reliable 90,021 knowledge of my intention than this? Of course not.

37. (At the beginning of the piece of music the composer’s hand says: ♪ = 88, but to perform it correctly today, ♪ = 94 must be played: So what is the tempo that the composer meant?)

38. Interrupt a person during a completely unprepared and free speech. Then ask him what he wanted to say next; most likely, he will be able to continue the sentence he started. – “For this, he already had to somehow imagine what he wanted to say.” – Isn’t this phenomenon the reason why we say that the continuation seemed to be presented to him?

39.Isn’t it surprising that there is such a reaction, such a recognition of intent? Isn’t this a supremely amazing language tool? And what, in fact, is so amazing about him? Well, it’s hard to imagine how a person learns such word usage. After all, it is so subtle.

40. But is it more difficult to grasp than, for example, the use of the words “I represented him”? Yes, every such use of language is wonderful, surprising if you focus only on the description of physical objects.

41. If I say: “I wanted to do this and that” and base this statement on thoughts, ideas, etc. that I remember, then another to whom I communicate only these thoughts, ideas and etc., should be able to conclude from them with the same degree of reliability that then I wanted to do this and that. – But often he does not succeed. Of course, if I myself drew a conclusion about my intention from this kind of evidence, then another could rightfully say that such a conclusion is highly unreliable.

42. How does a child learn to use the expression “I intended to throw it back then”? And how do you know that then he really was in that state of mind, which I call “intend to …”?

43. What if a person has never used the expression “I then intended …” or “I then wanted to …” and never learned to use it? A person can think about many other things without ever thinking about it . He can master a significant area of language games without mastering this one.

But then is it not surprising that with all the diversity of people we do not meet with this kind of flaw? Or, perhaps, they are found among the insane, and we simply do not often have to observe what ways of using the language such people are capable of and which are not?

44. “I had an intention …” does not express the memory of the experience. (Like: “I was going to …”)

45. Intention (intention) is neither an impulse of the soul, nor a mood, nor a sensation or representation. It is not a state of consciousness. It has no true duration.

46. “I have an intention to leave in the morning.” – When did you have this intention? All the time; or intermittently?

47. Look in the box in which you hope to find this intention. The box is empty. “I suppose you were looking for it among the sensations.

Consider what exactly it might mean to have recurring intent. Something like having an intention, abandoning it, returning to it again, etc.

48.Under what circumstances do they say: “This mechanism is a brake, but it does not work”? That is, it does not fulfill its purpose. What is the reason that it has such a purpose? One could also say, “There was an intention for this to work as a brake.” Whose intent? Here intention as a state of mind completely eludes us.

Is it also not possible to imagine that a multitude of people had a certain intention, fulfilled it, and none of them had this intention? Thus, the government may have intentions that no other 90,020 people have 90,021.

49. There may be a verb that would mean “to formulate your intention in words or other signs, aloud or in your mind”. This verb will not be identical in meaning to our verb “intend.”

There may be a verb that would mean “to act according to intent”; nor will it be identical in meaning to our “intend.”

Another verb could mean “to think about intention; or replay it over and over again in my head. “

50. Is it possible to prevent someone from thinking – but to prevent intending? Planning – perhaps. And also interfere with adherence to intentions, that is, interfere with thinking or action.

51. Application of the imperative. Compare orders:

Raise Your Hand!

Imagine …!

Calculate in your head …!

Think …!

Concentrate your attention on …!

Look at this figure as a cube!

with these:

Intend…!

By these words …!

Suspect this is the case!

Believe it is so!

Be firmly convinced that …!

Remember what happened!

Doubt if this happened!

Hope for his return!

Is there a difference between the fact that the former are intentional, and the latter are involuntary movements of the spirit? Rather, I will say that the second group of verbs does not denote actions.(Compare this with the order: “Sincerely laugh at this joke!”)
