Finding the Right Bangles for You

Today, it would be tough to track down a jewelry lover who doesn’t have a stack of vintage and contemporary bangles and other bracelets ready to go for any occasion.

People have worn bangles and other bracelets for centuries. Examples can be found in the wide range of personal adornments favored by the Ancient Egyptians, some of whom wore bracelets and armlets made of gold and flecked with gemstones such as lapis and turquoise.

Fashion has evolved over the years, but the popularity of bangles has remained the same. Jewelry makers have created cuffs in all manner of styles, and no matter what your taste, you can find antique and vintage diamond bangles, ruby bangles, emerald bangles and more to suit you and to pair with any of your favorite ensembles. And although “bracelets” and “bangles” are often used interchangeably, there is a difference between the two.

Bangles are solid, one-piece bands that are always characterized by their rigid ring shape. Today, they’re made of metal, plastic, wood or other materials. Because this cuff is a solid piece, you have to slide it over your hand. Bracelets, however, are flexible pieces. Whether they’re charm bracelets, link bracelets, beaded bracelets or another variety, you open and close a bracelet at its ends, where it locks around your wrist with a clasp.

Bracelets and bangles suit most anyone, and there’s a style of bangle for every occasion, whether you’ve opted for an Art Deco bangle, a Victorian-era bangle or another kind. And their versatility doesn’t end there. Jewelry lovers know that when it comes to bangles (and other kinds of bracelets), you never have to choose just one. Just as you might wear a vintage tennis bracelet by itself or pair it with other thin bracelets, you can opt for a simple pared-down look with a single bangle or go big and stack your sculptural modern bangles to deepen their impact or double up your classic gold bangles and pair them with a T-shirt and jeans or a comfortable cotton day dress.

Browse an extensive collection of vintage and contemporary bangles and other bracelets on 1stDibs. Find extraordinary works by iconic jewelry houses such as Cartier, Tiffany & Co. and David Webb, or peruse the array of link bracelets, cuff bracelets and diamond bangles for innumerable accessorizing options.

Edward, Wiltshire 90,000 wooden models with painting, wooden sticks

Stylists note that wood jewelry is experiencing a rebirth in modern fashion. The first reason is the trends in the fashion industry, the second reason is the desire to wear original things made from natural materials, to be closer to nature.The tree, after being processed and acquiring a stylish design look, gives warmth, surprises with texture and an unusual look.

Pros and Cons

Warm summer weather is a time of freedom, carelessness and the opportunity to experiment with your own image, trying on various types of jewelry. Wooden accessories can make your look trendy and memorable.

But like any jewelry, wooden bracelets have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages of jewelry include:

  1. Organic. A massive tree looks harmoniously with light flying outfits, finding a balance between elements.
  2. Versatility. Wood bracelets can be dyed in any color, have many design solutions, so they will suit many clothes.
  3. Conciseness. Wood and ethnic style are indivisible concepts. Thanks to this tandem, it is easy to create a super-topical fashionable image, simple but bright.
  4. Focusing attention on details. A wide bracelet will perfectly emphasize the fragility and grace of the wrist.
  5. Compatibility with other accessories. A wooden bracelet is a self-sufficient decoration, but if desired, it can be combined with something else.
  6. Durability. Due to the lacquer coating, the bracelets will last for a long time.
  7. Lightness and convenience. The material does not rub, does not bite into the skin, does not cling to clothing.
  8. Such a simple accessory – a bracelet made of wood, creates that very summer mood that encourages you to travel, walk until the morning, feel young and carefree.

The only disadvantage is that wooden decorations are not suitable for any style of . For example, they are unacceptable against the backdrop of tracksuits and office dress code.

Models

It’s so good that designers are always trying to surprise fashionistas and pamper them with exclusive gizmos! Today you can find several models, interesting and stylish, combining the attractiveness of ethnicity and modern fashion trends.

Bead

Bracelets are obtained laconic, but attracting attention. Beads can be different: large and small sizes, arbitrary shapes, intertwined with each other, shapes, separated by knots or other elements.

The most popular bead bracelet is Shambhala. Once it was a talisman of ancient tribes from evil forces, today it is a detail that is in great demand among young people.

Solid Wood

A unique product that makes fine jewelry. These bracelets are comfortable, practical and not subject to fashion trends. The solid wood decoration will complement the evening dress, the image in the urban style, the ethnic dress.

Sectional

They look fresh and not beaten. They can consist of wooden blocks of any geometric shapes – rectangles, ovals, squares, circles, or have an irregular intricate shape.

From wooden sticks

A unique piece of jewelry that you can create with your own hands. To do this, you need a medical wooden staple or an ordinary ice cream stick. The workpiece is soaked in water for a day so that it can bend. Then it is placed inside the glass so that it acquires a rounded shape, and left for a day. Then the most interesting thing begins – endless possibilities for decorating a future fashionable bracelet.

Decor

Wood is an unpretentious material, it is easy for needlewomen to work with it in any technique.Therefore, in the manufacture of bracelets, a wooden blank is combined with many other materials.

A common option is painting. It can be any floral, animalistic ornaments, ethnic motives, figures, images. Mostly acrylic paints are used, after drying, the surface is covered with a thin layer of varnish.

Designers add inserts opposite in texture to the wood – metal, leather, stones (amber, coral), ceramics, pieces of fur, mother-of-pearl.

Epoxy resin allows you to bring to life various ideas, create flat and three-dimensional decorations.

Wood type

Craftsmen use a variety of tree species for bracelets. If we consider a tree from an esoteric point of view, as a talisman, you should pay attention to the following types of wood:

  • oak – a symbol of strength and will to win. Endows the owner with such qualities as endurance, courage, dedication;
  • birch protects the family hearth, harmonizes relations between partners;
  • tender pussy willow helps in education, profession and personal life;
  • aspen neutralizes negative energy;
  • mountain ash helps to find friends, become more sociable;
  • alder and sandalwood will protect you from the evil eye;
  • conifers give positive energy and peace of mind.

Leaving

Wooden decorations do not require any special maintenance. But do not expose them to mechanical force (pressing, squeezing), direct sunlight, cleaning chemicals.

Stylists have developed a quick guide with tips to help you extend the life of your wooden jewelry:

  1. Store separately from sharp objects – knives, files, scissors.
  2. Observe temperature and humidity conditions – store away from batteries, do not leave in the bathroom.
  3. Use a padded container or box.
  4. Avoid contact with household chemicals, cosmetics, perfumes, alcoholic medical solutions, ink from pens.

What to wear with?

The list of clothes with which wooden bracelets are combined is small. But they look best with things made from natural materials – cotton, linen, wool.

A bracelet made of wood with a light dress in ethnic style or with a coarse knit sweater – a clear example of stylish combinations.

Jeans are an indispensable tool for building everyday bows with wood decorations.

As for the color palette, the tree creates a single sound with natural shades of pine needles, young foliage, golden sand, azure sky.

How to make a bracelet from wooden beads with your own hands

This article will focus on:

It is difficult to find an even more versatile piece of jewelry than a bracelet made of wooden beads. Unlike beads made of certain types of stones, metal or beads, such jewelry can be worn by both women and men. Moreover, the age of the owner of the bracelet does not matter either. After all, the tree looks so laconic that products made from it are equally popular among young people and more conservative older people.

A bracelet made of wooden material is universal not only in terms of gender and age of the wearer, but also in terms of its appearance. Such an accessory can be combined with any clothing: be it extravagant and pretentious outfits, or strict business suits that do not allow the use of catchy accessories and jewelry.This is due to the decorative properties of the tree.

If such beads are not dyed, but stained and covered with a colorless varnish, they have high decorative properties, since the woody texture of the beads looks very attractive and noble. It is not for nothing that in the era of the dominance of artificial and polymer materials, wood used in jewelry has become a sign of good taste.

If you want to make a bracelet from wooden beads with your own hands, then you have come to the right place.This article describes several techniques for creating beautiful wooden jewelry, which are backed up by a photo.

Bead shape

The following types of beads can be found in handmade accessories stores:

Material of this shape can be found in stores most often. The beads can be slightly smaller than a cherry pit or up to 2 centimeters thick. Ball-shaped beads are the main ingredient in most types of bracelets.

They are made in the form of a tube, which can be of different lengths.The tube can be of equal diameter along its entire length or be barrel-shaped. They are often used as a divider for jewelry, or as tips in front of a lock.

They are made in the form of cubes of various sizes. Quite often on sale you can find cubic beads on which letters from the English alphabet are written or burned out, which allows you to create personalized bracelets on your wrist.

This concept includes any spherical beads.They are used as the main element of a bracelet, or as additional decorative elements.

These beads are made in the form of a one-sided or two-sided cone. Used as spacers or tips.

They are small or medium thickness plates that can be round, oval, or square. Used as separators.

Bead color

Beads can be divided into the following color categories:

Such beads are covered with a varnish composition that completely or partially hides the wood texture, rings and veins, or they are immersed in a solution of acrylic with water, which gives them a rich and bright color while maintaining the texture.

This category includes beads made from wood that has been stained. They turn brown in various shades while retaining their woody texture. Often they are varnished, which gives such products a noble and expensive look.

Stained or unpainted wood, which is covered with clear lacquer for protection and a glossy sheen.

These are stylish beads that are dipped in a dye solution with a mixture of different colors.Also, the print can be applied to them by thermal printing or other contact method.

Unpainted material that is varnished or painted by the master with his own hand. It is quite rare on sale, but it gives a lot just for creativity.

What to choose for a woman’s or a man’s bracelet?

To create a beautiful men’s bracelet, you need to purchase beads of black, dark brown or lacquered stained wood.The most preferred shapes are small balls, barrels, or round plates, cubes. Such a bracelet will suit any man and will be combined with both sports and classic clothes.

Any beads are suitable for a woman’s bracelet, especially large round ones. The color varies depending on what you plan to wear the jewelry under. For summer clothes, go ethno-style, multi-colored and bright beads are perfect. For office suits or sophisticated evening gowns, go for ruby red, turquoise, ultramarine, lilac or white.For winter wear, brown lacquered or printed beads are suitable.

To make baby sling beads, you can’t do without multi-colored round beads of various sizes.

Materials required to create a bracelet on the wrist

After you have learned all the necessary information about the beads, it is time to select the components for the future bracelet:

They can be purchased in sets of 10-50 per pack. The colors and shape of the beads depend solely on your creative idea.

A base is a wire, cord, line or thread on which the beads will be attached. For hard bracelets, you need to purchase base rings; for the rest, a waxed cord or fishing line is suitable. Sometimes it can be a thin chain, which should fit the diameter of the hole in the bead.

These are limit switches, spacer rings made of other material, locks, plates, figurines, rhinestones and other decorative or functional elements of the future bracelet.

In some cases, we may need round nose pliers, quality boot glue, scissors and a lighter.Round nose pliers are required for wringing out end switches, clamping rings and snipping the wire. Glue for fixing some elements, and a lighter for gluing the fibers of the cut cord so that they do not unravel during the process of creating the bracelet.

How to make a bracelet from wooden beads and a base ring

This is an elegant and beautiful women’s bracelet for dresses, blouses and other sophisticated clothes. Such jewelry is worn in pairs: one for each wrist. To create them, you need to purchase the following materials:

  • base rings for two earrings with clasps, the photo shows rings with a diameter of 6 centimeters;

  • many small beads 3-5 mm in diameter, in light and dark shades of brown;

  • 4 disc-shaped beads 5-7 mm in diameter;

  • large round beads with a diameter of 2 cm;

  • decorative dividers in copper, bronze or silver.

All assembled materials are shown in the photo:

Next, you need to proceed in the following sequence:

1. Take small beads in the earring and simply put on it according to the system 2 white, 2 black (or vice versa). This process looks like this:

2. As a result, we should get as shown in the photo below:

3. When we have reached a third of the length of the circle, you need to put on a large bead:

4.In the very center of the composition, between decorative dividers or several flat beads, place a bead 2 cm in diameter.It will be exactly in the center of the composition:

5. Next, you just need to collect the ring to the end, until the bracelet is completed:

The second bracelet can be made in a slightly different way so that their appearance is not symmetrical:

It will take no more than an hour even for a beginner to create these stylish and beautiful jewelry on the wrist, and the result will delight the owner for decades.

How to make a bracelet from wooden cubes and elastic cord

A very beautiful bracelet, which, if properly executed, will be suitable for wearing by both women and men. To create it, you need to buy the following materials:

  • many cubes of the same color, monochrome or several at once;

  • elastic cord or thread;

  • Moment glue or superglue.

To correctly assemble the bracelet, you must perform the work in the following sequence:

1.You need to measure on the wrist, mark, and then cut off several pieces of the cord of the required length with a small margin. You need to prepare about the same number of threads of the same size. The more there are, the wider and more beautiful the finished bracelet will turn out.

2. Then tie two pieces of thread together. On their tips you need to make a knot. Next, they begin to add cubes. Each bead must be threaded through two laces at once. Each bead should fit snugly against each other, so when threading them you need to press tightly.

3. When all the beads have been added, on the last row they should be fixed on double knots.

4. Then you need to carefully and consistently tie the ends, thus forming a bracelet. For this, double or triple nodes are used, into which glue is buried to increase strength.

5. Then you need to carefully cut off the extra pieces of thread, under the very knot, once again dribbling them with glue. The end result is a beautiful and discreet unisex bracelet.

As you can see, wooden cubes have high decorative properties.

Beautiful men’s bracelets

A couple more examples of simple and beautiful men’s bracelets:

To create such an accessory, use lacquered unpainted beads up to 1 cm in diameter, elastic thread and one divider with a widening neck at both ends. All beads are put on a cord or thread, measured for the size of the wrist, after which they are tied into one bracelet with a knot that is hidden under the divider.

Another simple and stylish version of the men’s bracelet:

To create it, you need 6 spherical or barrel-shaped beads made of stained lacquered wood, 12 flat metal discs, 10 wooden rounded rings and one metal ball that will hold the metal ring together.All the craftsman needs to do is put all the beads on the ring and fasten it on the ball.

90,000 How the Honor MagicBook 15 can bring the manager, the traveler and the student together?

Students

Mobility and multitasking

The modern student is a multifunctional and inherently mobile phenomenon. So the gadget must be ready for continuous work in enhanced multitasking mode at any time of the day or night.Well, the device should also look “not ashamed.”

Judge for yourself, student everyday life has long gone beyond the bounds of lecture notes and endless generation of abstracts, term papers and other multi-page epics. Here and working with multimedia materials, surfing the Internet with a million open tabs to boot, and much more. Relaxation watching videos on YouTube or TV series in online cinemas has not been canceled either. And all these tasks are usually solved in a variety of places: at home, in a cafe or university.

As a result: everything is serious enough, but solvable.

The updated AMD Ryzen 5 5500U processor will be responsible for performance and multitasking, which is quite capable of handling such a volume of work, not allowing the laptop to “bend” under the load of tasks at the most inopportune moment. And with enhanced AMD Radeon RX Vega 7 graphics, complete with 16GB of high-speed 3200MHz RAM, you can get creative, whether it’s processing photos, assembling videos or painting.

The gadget that accompanies you always and everywhere is part of the image.Whatever one may say, but even laptops have to be not only powerful on the inside, but also stylish on the outside. Honor MagicBook 15 is what a modern laptop for every day should be – moderately solid, stylish and light, which is also important. A full-fledged 15.6 “laptop in our case weighs a little more than many 13” relatives, namely, 1.54 kg. So your mobility will not be affected.

Managers

Office where there is a laptop

And not only them.There are no less than a dozen more professions associated with the constant presence in the office and work with an incredible amount of text and numerical information.

We will not be able to reduce the amount of routine work with data, but to add comfort is quite. And here’s how.

Office software is still not an easy task, even for modern laptops. Especially when we are talking about complex financial statements or text documents with graphics. And if experienced managers are not intimidated by arrays of numbers, then average laptops can strain and think about complex calculations, slowing down your work.But 16 GB of high-speed RAM is enough not only for student creatives, but also for serious office tasks.

The laptop runs Windows 10 Home out of the box, which will be updated to Windows 11. Microsoft will start rolling out the update on October 5th. As a gift, MagicBook 15 users get a month of free access to Microsoft 365.

Working for many hours at the computer in an uncomfortable position and the need to constantly focus on the bright laptop screen is almost 100% likely to feel unwell in the evening.The MagicBook 15 has an Eye Comfort feature that reduces blue light emissions and allows you to customize the screen in two modes – “warm” and “cold”, to suit your needs.

Mental health is well influenced by the ability to choose a workplace. Today – in the office, tomorrow – in the park in the fresh air. In both cases, there is one “but” – glare and flare. As a result, the speed of work decreases, and the nervous system is depleted due to the forced need to be distracted by stimuli.

Anti-reflective coating helps to cut off stray light.The brightness level of the laptop, of course, decreases, but the comfort in work will definitely increase.

Travelers

Work with mountain views. Or at sea?

People who did not even have to adapt to modern realities. Home for them is not something permanent. Today they are in the mountains, and a week later they are on the seashore. The ability to be always on the move and enjoy it is about them.

Of course, I want to keep positive emotions in order to remember each unforgettable trip with trepidation and not repeat the route next time.After all, every journey is a new adventure.

Imagine. Hundreds of photos of beautiful views and sights that you have taken with a modern mirrorless camera. And all this in raw format. This is where Adobe Lightroom should take over.

No problem. IPS matrix with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels and excellent color reproduction – 100% sRGB color space. What else do you need to get the perfect photo in terms of light and color?

If you are a supporter of mobile photography, we can only support you.And if you also take pictures on Honor smartphones, then we can share a life hack. With the help of NFC fast connection technology, you can transfer hundreds of photo and video materials between your mobile device and a computer, broadcast the smartphone screen on a laptop and even copy text.

Autonomy is an important consideration when choosing a device that will travel with you. Honor MagicBook 15 received a 56 Wh battery, which made it a really tenacious magic in everyday tasks like watching Full HD video (up to 11.5 hours.work).

And here’s another important plus. The Ultrabook can play the role of a power bank on a hike: even when the MagicBook 15 is turned off, you can charge your smartphone to start capturing the beauty that surrounds you again.

With all due respect to Vladimir Vysotsky, he too often tried to cover up the gaps in the text with a loud voice.
Take, for example, the song “It’s not evening yet.” Judging by indirect evidence, the action takes place approximately in the XVI-XVIII centuries.A blooper on a blooper.

We’ve learned to darn sails
And to plug holes with bodies

Darning sails is perfectly normal for a sailor. There is no desperation or valor in this. You can darn the sails too – you don’t need four years of experience. Nobody ever closed the holes on sailing ships with bodies. Holes during the battle were sealed from the inside with wooden corks, or from the outside with a cloth plaster.

A squadron is chasing us on the heels of
It’s calm at sea – and we can’t avoid a meeting!

How can a squadron chase when the sea is calm? Or is it a galley fleet? Further we will talk about the frigate – was there such a type of galley? But all the same, the verb “chase” is unsuccessful here

The flagship frigate
turned sideways And the left side was stained with smoke
Return volley – by eye and at random
Fire and death in the distance! Good luck with us!

Again it is not clear how the flagship frigate is deployed.It is not clear why a random response volley – the distance for a ship’s cannon salvo, even with heavy guns, was very small – up to 100-150 m (at long distances smooth-bore guns did not even penetrate the sides of the ships and the cannonballs simply got stuck in the sides).
It is also unclear where the fire on the frigate came from. Before the battle, all the lights on the ship were extinguished. Knocked the torch out of the gunner’s hands? Nobody at sea has ever fired hot cannonballs. The nuclei didn’t explode either — they weren’t shells. The main damage to the sailors was caused by wood chips.Bomb cannons, which fired explosive bombs or grenades, appeared only in the middle of the 19th century

But it is bad with the wind, and there are leaks in the hold

Wooden ship always leaks. This is fine.

They look at us through binoculars, hundreds of eyes through the tubes

Binoculars were invented at the very end of the 19th century, when there were no more sailing ships left. The first binoculars, designed by Ernst Abbe and Karl Zeiss, did not go on sale until 1894.The spyglass cost a lot of money and in the entire enemy squadron, at best, there could be only a few of them. There could be no “hundreds of eyes” in principle

But they will never see us
Chained to the oars in the galleys!

Who the hell brought you to these galleys? After Lepanto (1571), there were no major battles of purely galley fleets. They were quickly replaced by sailboats.

And the rats thought: why the devil is not joking
And they jumped stupidly, fleeing the buckshot

Did they jump stupidly? Well, okay, it was necessary to fill the line with something.But where did the buckshot come from? This is already the end of the 19th century

Some with a colt, some with a dagger, some in tears
We left the sinking ship

Colt is also the middle of the 19th century. He does not intersect with the galleys. Why the ship is sinking is also unclear. Ships rarely sank during the battle. In the Battle of Gogland in 1788, the Russian battleship Vladislav received hundreds of hits, including 34 underwater holes, as a result of which it lost its progress and the ability to continue the battle, but at the same time it confidently kept afloat.During the battle in Navarino Bay in 1827, the flagship of the Russian fleet “Azov” only received 153 hits in the corps, including 7 underwater holes, but at the same time did not even lose combat effectiveness, and just a few days after the battle made a safe transition to Malta.

How were the Art Basel and Design Miami / Basel fairs in Basel. Report :: Impressions :: RBK Style

In September, several fairs were simultaneously held in Basel: the main and the largest Art Basel and demonstrating the collection design Design Miami / Basel, designed for more modest budgets Volta, representing young artists June and Liste (both held their sessions under the roof of the same exhibition center , as Art Basel – Messe Plaza) and a small, dedicated mainly to the graphics Paper Positions.The museums prepared shock expositions as always. The Kunstmuseum hosted the first large retrospective of American artist Cara Walker, and the Beiler Foundation invited the “Close Up” exhibition, which features about 100 portraits of women artists from Frida Kahlo to Cindy Sherman and Elizabeth Peyton. Even in the halls of the famous Goetheanum, in the nearby Dornach, an exhibition of paintings by Heikedin Gunther was shown. And on the Vitra campus in Vejle am Rhein, as usual, they threw a noisy party on the occasion of the opening of the Women in Design exhibition, which mentioned the textile experiments of Varvara Stepanova and Lyubov Popova, as well as the interiors of Galina Balashova’s spaceships.

Art Basel Fair

The closest attention was focused on Art Basel: after the postponements, the cancellation of three events and several online sessions, this is the first such large-scale fair to be held in Europe in the IRL (In Real Life) mode, in other words, in a pre-quarantine format. Organizers, visitors, and, of course, gallery owners had difficulties and fears. Nevertheless, the fair brought together 272 galleries from 33 countries of the world under its roof, which is quite a bit less than in 2019.The technical part concerning the covid protocol was carried out almost flawlessly, the QR codes of the vaccination certificates and negative test results, which were done immediately without any queue, were exchanged for bracelets, allowing you to freely move around all the fairs. In the premises, everyone regularly wore masks, which led to curious cases when people, having identified themselves, began to cheerfully apologize to each other. In general, no one hid the joy that everything happens in real life. There were noticeably fewer visitors in comparison with previous years; over the entire period of the fair’s work, it was attended by about 60 thousand.human. This can be explained by the almost complete absence of collectors from the United States and China, and these countries, according to the latest report, currently account for 44% and 18% of the world market, respectively. However, many of the gallerists interviewed said that the decrease in the flow of visitors allowed to communicate at a calm pace and much better quality with European art buyers who like to acquire it at a more measured pace.

How the fair was organized

To convince doubting art dealers to take part in the fair, organizers have set up a CHF 1.5 million “solidarity fund” to be distributed among galleries disappointed with their sales, Fair’s CEO Mark Spiegler told a press conference.Obviously, after summing up the results, it turns out that some galleries have earned a lot, others have recouped the costs, but there will be those that remain at a loss. Refusing to check the accounting records, Art Basel invited all participants to inform within two weeks whether they want to take advantage of a 10% discount on booth rental or are willing to leave this money in favor of those who were not so lucky. The latter will thus receive a larger compensation. In the first few days, several galleries that made good sales announced that they would not take advantage of the discount.Among them is the Nagel Draxler gallery, whose co-founder Saskia Draxler says: “From the very beginning, we felt that the fair was a success. It had amazing energy and great atmosphere. There is nothing better than live communication. We have decided not to use the solidarity fund. ”

Despite the fact that the fair announced its intention to go out in a hybrid format and conduct virtual sessions in parallel, not all galleries have organized rooms for viewing works online.It seems that the virtual program is more suitable for young people, and the majority of collectors of the Art Basel level are elderly people who do not enjoy the need to scroll the computer screen in search of the work they like, preferring to this “analog” methods of acquiring art.

What they bought at Art Basel

Fair visitors admitted that it did not bring bright discoveries in 2021.Although in the era of instagram, surprises from fairs have not been expected for a long time. But really, most of the galleries, wishing to avoid unpleasant surprises, brought in obviously win-win authors. For example, portraits of Alice Neal, whose recent retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art made her incredibly popular, were presented and sold at several stands by Victora Miro, Xzavier Havkins and David Zvinger – prices ranged from $ 200,000 to $ 1.2 million. Gladstone Gallery brought Kit Haring, who left for over $ 5 million.Sheila Hicks’ work has also been seen on several stands. The sale of one of her works for $ 600 thousand was announced by the Alison Jacques gallery. This attempt to play it safe with famous names was especially noticeable at Unlimited, where a selection of works of art in a museum format is exhibited. This year’s curator Giovanni Carmin has collected 62 works under the arches of a giant hangar. Among others there were “Bread House” by the troublemaker of many Muscovites Urs Fischer, “Pictures at an Exhibition” by David Hockney, “London Mist” by Gilbert and George, as well as the work of Robert Rauschenberg “Rollings” (“Salvage”), which was acquired by a European museum for $ 4.5 millionThe most expensive painting, which does not seem to be sold, is called Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Hardware Store diptych, exhibited by the Van de Weghe gallery for $ 40 million. Sales reports are still coming in, but in general, more transactions took place in the $ 40-500 thousand segment.

Design Miami / Basel Fair

The events at the Design Miami / Basel fair developed on a much smaller scale.In its fifteenth year of existence, 26 leading international galleries took part in it, which is almost half less than in 2019. Among the participants are such distinguished players of the design market, specializing in classics, such as French Laffanour-Galerie Downtown, Eric Philippe, Patrick Seguin, Mitterrand and Italian Rossella Colombari, as well as promoting contemporary authors Carpenters Workshop Gallery, Friedman Benda, Maria Wettergren and Kreo. All of them showcased a broad slice of the collectible design market, offering historical work by Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perrian, Jean Royer, Picasso, Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne, and contemporary pieces by Nacho Carbonell, Mischa Kahn and Daniel and Boris Berlin.The most expensive item, it seems, was Charlotte Perrian’s table, its price exceeded $ 2 million.

The gallery stands, as usual, were diluted with Curio sections, representing either a thematic selection of objects or the works of one author – there were 14 of them.In this part of the program, Carpenters Workshop Gallery demonstrated a new direction – a collection of jewelry created by the gallery’s designers. Converso brought the Americana project. This collection of rare industrial design products – including radios, clocks, fans, hair dryers and waffle makers designed for the mass consumption by Ray and Charles Eames, Alvar Aalto, Henry Dreyfus and manufactured by Kisco, Motorola and General Electric – won the Fair’s award for the best stand.Stylized as an elevator car, Harry Nureyev’s stand with the same shiny sofa, pouf and armchair shone with a silver glitter. The layout of these two sections looked familiar, except that they occupied exactly half of the usual area of the second floor. In all other respects, the fair layout has undergone major changes.

How the fair was organized

The Design at Large section, presenting ambitious projects combining both conceptual and industrial innovations, is also located on the second floor this year.The designer Matthew Leanner, reflecting on the fragility of human life during the pandemic, created the installation “State of the World”, in which he visualized diagrams in volumetric aluminum sculptures resembling bizarre domes, representing a freeze frame of all living people from one year to 100 years old. today in over 100 countries. The neighboring project Joseph Walsh Studio, in turn, demonstrated masterly technical achievements when working with laminated wood. The Magnus sculpture and the dining table with chairs appear to be painted in the air.Light, graceful lines are the exact opposite of the most complex process of their implementation.

All 2500 sq. m of the first floor was occupied by a joint project of Superblue and Design Miami, which became a kind of propylae in front of the entrance, a place for program discussions and several times during the day turned into a meditation platform. This huge installation combines Studio Drift’s Shy Synchrony project with the elliptical, elliptical pavilion Forest of Space by Japanese architect Su Fujimoto.On the benches that form the amphitheater, one could observe the coordinated movement of mechanical luminous objects, similar to flowers, which open and close in response to the intensity of sunlight. However, in this case, they reacted to the neural activity and heart rate of the volunteers from among the visitors, or moved according to a given choreography to the music of Philip Glass.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the fair organizers have made a lot of effort to keep in touch with galleries and collectors.Realizing that the future belongs to young collectors, during the Basel session in 2021, the organizers announced the opening of a new direction called DM / BX. It is an online platform that features limited-edition and small-scale items: furniture, jewelry, lighting, ceramics, textiles and more from young and established designers and manufacturers, with prices ranging from $ 50 to $ 2,500. Here you can buy works by Gaetan Pesce for $ 800 or works by a native of Ukraine, living in Brooklyn, Sasha Topolnitskaya for $ 120.At the stand of the platform in Basel, there were presented multicolored vases made of colored glass by Italian Laura Sattin worth $ 375.

Trends

Analysis of the works brought by galleries to fairs reveals several trends. First of all, this is the presence of Brazilian designers, mainly in the historical segment, which is not surprising, since they began to develop this market not so long ago, and there we will hopefully have many more discoveries. For example, Laffanour-Galerie Downtown offered a dining table and a rare example of a sofa-canoe by Jose Zanina Caldes, Side Gallery presented a retrospective of Geraldo de Barrosa’s minimalist works.Belgian Gokelaere & Robinson exhibited unusual chairs made of bent plywood with metal legs by Juaquim Tenreiro.

And the Brazilian Mercado Moderno returned to Basel with an installation dedicated to the contemporary designer Ines Schertel and her works made of felt.Thus, the gallery also responded to the collectors’ request for objects made using artisan technologies. This trend was represented by the ceramics of the recently departed Bruno Gambon at the Rosella Colombari stand and the serpentine abstract sculptural compositions by Martin Bodilsen Caldal at the Format Oslo gallery stand.

The Etage Projects gallery brought ceramic vessels and containers from the Arcana series, wrapped in a multicolored climbing rope, by Danish designer Karl Monis.Belgian Pierre Marie Giraud filled the stand with contemporary glass and ceramic sculpture. Quite a lot of Japanese authors could also be noticed – both the ceramic sculpture of the radical potter Takura Kuwato, and the works of Akiyama Yo, reminiscent of the layers of the earth, subjected to a powerful tectonic impact, and the giant archetypal pots of Kazunori Haman. This thread leads us to another trend – the passion for the Japanese theme. New York dealer Eric Thomsen has brought back a selection of exquisite baskets created using the traditional Japanese weaving technique.

The Japonesque Gallery, which debuted in the Curio program, introduced Akihiro Isogaya’s glass works to collectors. At the Carpenters Workshop Gallery booth, Aldo Becker’s deep green wooden console was presented, covered with several coats of Japanese urushi lacquer.

A global concern for responsible consumption was evident at Design Miami’s booths. It manifested itself in the works of the Frenchman Diego Febvre, whose creative method lies in the fact that he takes any boring objects of mass consumption – benches, table lamps, ballpoint pens – and sticks around them with a layer of multi-colored plasticine mass that hardens in the air, turning them into absurd, frivolous and cheerful objects.

They could be seen at the stand of the platform of young designers DM / BX.The apotheosis was the Everyday Gallery stand with a solo exhibition of the famous interior designer, artist and sculptor Lionel Jadot, who uses exclusively used and unnecessary details of other functional objects to create sofas, lamps and other useful household utensils. Everything is used, from old car seats to obsolete Japanese screens.
