What causes itchy skin?

Many things can make your skin itch. Dry skin, eczema, and hives can cause itching all over your body. Contact dermatitis is another cause of all-over itching. You can get this condition after your skin comes in contact with something that irritates it, such as a strong laundry soap or a body lotion.

You might feel itchy in only a few parts of your body. Common causes of this kind of itching include insect bites, infections like ringworm or jock itch, and allergies to plants or to the metals in costume jewelry.

Most causes of itchy skin have specific treatments—your doctor will tell you what treatment is best for you.

First, how can I keep my skin from getting dry?

Dry air can cause your skin to become dry and itchy. In your home, use a humidifier to put moisture in the air during the winter and in dry weather.

Some soaps can cause your skin to feel itchy. It’s good to use a soap that is unscented and hypoallergenic. This kind of soap does not contain dyes or perfumes that can irritate your skin. In addition, you can use a mild, unscented, hypoallergenic laundry detergent, avoid fabric softeners, and try using an extra rinse cycle to keep your clothes and bed sheets from making your skin itch.

Choose clothing made of soft fabrics like cotton or silk. Avoid wearing clothing made of rough wool, which can irritate your skin and make it itch.

How do I treat dry skin?

Moisturizers work well to treat dry skin. Choose a moisturizer that is hypoallergenic (it should say so on the label). The best moisturizers are also the most “gooey.” Ointments (or oils) are best, followed by creams, and then lotions. Petroleum jelly (example of brand name: Vaseline) is an excellent skin lubricant, but it can be messy to use.

Put a moisturizer on your skin three or four times during the day. Always put the moisturizer on right after you wash or bathe.

If you have very dry hands, put petroleum jelly on them before you go to bed at night and sleep with your hands in cotton-lined gloves.

Changing your bathing habits also can help. If you bathe too often, your skin may get dry. Try to take short, lukewarm baths or showers. Oatmeal baths (example of brand name: Aveeno) may be soothing to your skin. After your bath, pat your skin dry and put a moisturizer on your skin right away. Use a mild soap every day to clean your genital area and under your arms, but clean other parts of your body with soap only two or three times a week.

Some people use bath oils to help make their skin less dry. However, these oils can be dangerous because they make your tub slippery. To avoid slipping and falling, put the oil on your skin after you get out of the bathtub. Plain baby oil works well.

When should I see my doctor because of itchy skin?

Dry, irritated skin is more likely to get infected. Infected skin is red, warm, and swollen, and it may ooze fluid. You may need antibiotics to get rid of this kind of infection.

Severe itching, especially in older adults, sometimes is caused by a serious medical problem. Call your doctor if you are an older person with severe itching that doesn’t get better within two weeks and that does not have an obvious cause.

If you have a bad case of poison ivy or a sudden itchy rash, your doctor may be able to prescribe a medicine to help you.

What medicines treat itching?

A moisturizer might be all you need to relieve itching. If a moisturizer does not help enough, you could try using 1 percent hydrocortisone steroid skin cream for a week. If this is not helpful, your doctor may prescribe stronger steroids or antihistamine pills.

If you use a steroid cream for itching, you should not use the medicine for longer than one to two weeks. Be very careful when you put a steroid cream on your face or genital area. Steroid creams may make your skin get very thin and may cause other skin problems. Be sure to talk with your doctor if you are using a steroid cream or ointment to treat your itching.

You’ve just finished a nice, hot shower, and are drying off, when you notice your feet are feeling itchy.

Like really itchy.

And the itch only gets worse the more you scratch it.

Still worse, the itch starts to get more and more painful, like your foot is being poked with a thousand sharp needles.

Itchy feet after a shower are a common issue we all typically experience at one point or another.   Most people experience mild symptoms that only last a short while. But that short while can feel like an eternity when you’re losing your mind resisting the urge to scratch.

There are numerous causes for this difficulty. Typically, excessively dry skin is the culprit, though certain conditions can also be present that may make you more prone to itchy skin after showering.

If you’re susceptible to to dry skin during certain seasons, or if you experience one of these conditions, it could explain why you experience unbearably itchy skin.

What Causes Excessively Dry Skin?

  • Long Hot Showers
    • Super-hot showers can actually be damaging to your skin. It can wash off and dry out the natural oils on your skin, making it feel raw and unprotected, causing the itch. Try turning the heat down to a warm temperature when you shower.
  • Sensitivity to Certain Soaps
    • Sometimes the answer is as simple as changing to another brand of soap or body wash. Different soaps use a variety of natural and artificial chemicals to make their products. Some soaps may dry out your skin with use, causing the resulting itch.
  • Cold Weather & Dry Air
    • Opposite of hot showers, cold weather and dry air both have a similar effect on the skin, drying out the natural protective oils present, causing similar itching. Showering under these conditions may aggravate your already-dry skin. Try some skin moisturizer to rehydrate and heal your skin.

Other Causes for Itchy Feet In the Shower

  • Athlete’s Foot
    • This condition is usually caused by sweaty feet in tight-fitting shoes. It’s a fungal infection that thrives in damp environments, such as public showers and locker rooms where multiple people walk barefoot and can spread the fungus.
      • Wearing waterproof sandals in a gym shower, as well as wearing well-ventilated shoes regularly can help prevent this.
      • Over-the-counter creams can be purchased to treat the infection.
      • See a doctor if over-the-counter treatments are ineffective.
    • Cholinergic Urticaria
      • Generally occurring between ages 10-30, it’s a more painful itch that can be aggravated by hot showers. It is a condition related to body temperature that, when temperature is raised, will trigger a response that results in itchy, painful hives.
        • A doctor can diagnose and treat the condition.
      • Aquagenic Urticaria
        • This condition causes the skin to break out in hives when it comes in contact with water, regardless of the temperature. Usually it affects women around the onset of puberty, and can result in the itchy sensation you may be feeling, along with small hives or rashes.

        • Aquagenic Pruritus
          • Similar to aquagenic urticaria, this condition also causes the skin to break into hives when coming in contact with water. Little is known about the causes for this condition, but treatment is similar.

Usually, itchy feet after a shower can be treated with some simple at-home remedies. Over the counter creams, moisturizing lotions, different brands of soaps, or simply adjusting the temperature of your shower can all help alleviate itchy skin. You’ll notice the difference fairly quickly when you make the necessary changes.

On the occasion when those solutions don’t work, it’s best to consult your doctor to discuss what your best options are.

What Causes Itching Skin After Showering?

For some people,
having a bath comes with an uncomfortable side effect: a customary dance that
occurs directly as a result of an itching skin – a pesky, persistent itching.

Itching after
you take a bath or shower is quite common among a lot of people. There are
several culprits that could be the cause of your post-shower itchy skin and
some are more common than others.

Below are a
number of reasons behind what’s causing your skin to itch after showering.

1. Soap sensitivities

It’s possible
that the soap you’re using is drying out your skin as it cleans. A harsh soap
may not always leave a rash that you can see but it can leave a lasting itch
after your shower is over.

Failing to wash
all the soap residue off your skin after a shower can also be a source of
itching and discomfort.

2. Xerosis cutis

“Xerosis cutis”
simply means that your skin is too dry. Soaking your skin in hot water for
extended periods of time can strip your skin of its natural oils, irritating
skin that already lacks moisture. Sometimes that results in itching after a
shower.

The itching may
mostly happen on your feet or legs because those parts of your body have so
much contact with the water.

3. Aquagenic pruritus

With this condition,
your nervous system can be activated by water on your skin. As a result, you
get itchy after a shower or bath. This condition is rare, and if you have it,
you probably already know.

Aquagenic
pruritis causes immense itching after any contact with water, including washing
your hands, and going into the pool.

How to treat itchiness after bathing

If your itching
is persistent after a shower, you may want to consider using a home remedy as a
treatment. Below are some ways you can prevent itching or treat it if it
happens:

1. Pat your skin dry instead of towelling off.

Rubbing your
skin with a towel after a shower can strip your skin of moisture. Don’t try to
remove every water droplet from your skin. Instead, pat your skin dry with your
towel after washing off.

2. Moisturize your skin while it’s still wet.

Applying
moisturizer while your skin is just a bit damp will help to lock moisture into
your skin barrier. Opt for a fragrance-free hypoallergenic moisturizer.

Consider using a
moisturizer that’s “oil-free” if you have acne-prone skin. For an added cooling
benefit, store your moisturizer in the fridge before applying it.

3. Switch your soaps.

If you’re having
recurrent itching without a rash after you shower, maybe it’s time to switch
soaps. Look for a soap with mild, hypo-allergenic ingredients. Moisturizing
soap has been found to have a positive effect on reducing the symptoms of dry
skin.

4. Change your shower routine.

If you take long
showers, you may be leaving your skin parched. Taking shorter showers with
lukewarm water may give you skin that’s healthier and less itchy.

5. Try a cooling agent after showering.

Dermatologists
usually recommend using menthol or calamine lotion at the site of itching and
irritation.

6. Try using anti-itch creams.

Creams that
contain lactic acid may be used to soothe itching from dry skin and to help
bind moisture to the skin. Please note that
over-the-counter creams designed to soothe itching symptoms caused by
inflammation, like topical corticosteroids, don’t usually work to address
itching caused by skin that’s just dry.

7. Consider essential oils as part of your shower
routine.

You can use
essential oils to prevent or treat itching. Dilute any essential oil that you
choose with a soothing carrier oil, such as sweet almond or jojoba oil, before
being applied to skin that’s irritated.

Peppermint,
chamomile, tea tree, and rose geranium all have potential benefits for soothing
skin that’s dry and itchy.

Finally, drink more water.

Being dehydrated
can lead to skin that feels dry. In general, make sure that you’re getting
eight cups of water (or more!) each day to hydrate your body properly.

Shower Tips for Sensitive Skin

Showering can often leave sensitive skin itchy, tight, red, or dry. But a few tweaks to your routine could make it a more skin-friendly experience.

Close the door. It’s a simple tip, but a good one: Shutting yourself in when you shower helps build up steam in the bathroom. Pump up the humidity and give your skin a chance to soak in that extra moisture.

Keep it quick. A shower can feel great while you’re in it, but spending too much time under the jets can trigger skin troubles later. “Staying in too long washes the oils away from your skin,” says Carolyn Goh, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

This means the protective layer that keeps moisture locked in is gone. Water leaves your skin more easily once you’re dry. Goh suggests you limit shower sessions to less than 10 minutes. The same goes for baths, even though they’re a soak and not a spray. “The amount of time you spend in the water is more important than how the water touches your skin,” she says.

Be soap savvy. Sensitive skin and soap aren’t great friends, so the less you lather up, the better. If you can’t see dirt, water will do for cleaning most of your body. “Keep the soap to the dirty areas — armpits and groin,” says Suzan Obagi, MD, director of the Cosmetic Surgery & Skin Health Center at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. “Harsh soaps can dry your skin out more and make sensitive skin worse.”

Cool it down. Hot water also strips away your skin’s natural oils. There’s no ideal temperature to shoot for, Obagi says. Lukewarm — not too hot and not too cold — is the most soothing. Find the coolest temperature you can stand and leave it there. Speedy showers help here too, she says, because people tend to turn the temperature up the longer they’re in.

Pick the right products. Watch out for harsh soaps or body washes that have fragrance, dyes, or are deodorizing. Avoid alcohol-based and antibacterial options. All these are more likely to irritate your skin and leave it itchy, tight, and dry. Instead, go for gentle cleansers or shower gels with added oils or fats. “Look for soaps and cleansers that say ‘moisturizing,’ ‘hypoallergenic,’ or ‘made for sensitive skin,’ ” Obagi says.

Skip the scrubs. There’s no shortage of products designed to help remove the top layer of dead skin cells while you wash. But Obagi says products that exfoliate will only make already sensitive skin worse. Washcloths are OK as long as they aren’t too rough. Choose one made from a soft fabric. Toss it in the laundry after every use to be sure it isn’t housing bacteria or mold.

Dry off gently. When it comes to toweling off sensitive skin, gentle motions are key. “Patting dry is recommended over air drying or rubbing,” Goh says. Too rough, and you’re at risk of irritating skin. But don’t ditch the towel altogether or water will leave your skin too quickly. “Air-drying skin allows the body to lose the water moisture to the environment,” Obagi says. Blot your skin carefully, and keep ointment or cream on hand to seal in moisture.

Finish off with moisturizer. Right after a shower or bath, your skin is full of water. You can lock it in by slathering on cream or ointment right away. “As soon as you pat dry, apply a thick moisturizer to skin that is still moist,” Goh says. “This helps keep some of the moisture on the skin and helps replace the natural oils in the skin.”

When it comes to products, think thick. Ointments like petroleum jelly work best, followed by creams or shea butter with moisturizing ingredients like jojoba oil or olive oil.

Itching causes & treatments – Illnesses & conditions

Itching is an unpleasant sensation that compels a person to scratch the affected area. The medical name for itching is pruritus.

Itching can affect any area of the body. It can either be:

  • generalised – where itching occurs over the whole body
  • localised – where itching only occurs in a particular area

Sometimes, there may be a rash or spot where the itching occurs.

Mild, short-lived itching is common, but the problem can occasionally be severe and very frustrating to live with.

Things you can do

If you experience troublesome itching, there are some things you can do that may help relieve it and prevent damage caused by scratching, including:

  • patting or tapping the itchy area, rather than scratching it
  • holding a cold compress, such as damp flannel, over the affected area to cool it down
  • bathing or showering in cool or lukewarm water
  • using unperfumed personal hygiene products
  • avoiding clothes that irritate your skin, such as wool or man-made fabrics
  • using a moisturiser or emollient if your skin is dry or flaky

There are also medicines, such as antihistamines and steroid creams, that are available over the counter from pharmacies that may help relieve itching caused by certain skin conditions.

When to see your GP

Many cases of itching will get better over a short period of time. However, you should visit your GP if your itch is:

  • severe
  • lasts for a long time
  • keeps coming back
  • associated with other symptoms – such as redness and swelling or jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes)

You should also visit your GP if your entire body itches and there is no obvious cause. It could be a symptom of a more serious condition.

Your GP will ask you about your symptoms – for example, if you have noticed whether anything makes your itch worse, or if your itch comes and goes. They will also examine your skin to look for any visible symptoms.

In some cases, they may take a skin scraping or a swab so it can be tested to help identify the cause of your itching. A blood test may also be carried out to look for underlying problems, such as thyroid or kidney disease.

Depending on what is found to be causing your itch, you may be referred to a hospital specialist for a further assessment and specific treatment.

2. Skip the Long, Hot Soaks in the Tub — They’re Sucking the Moisture From Your Skin

At the end of a long day, nothing beats a long, hot shower or soak in a steamy bath.

But if you’re dealing with dry, itchy skin, you’ll want to rethink your wind-down routine — and shorten your bathing time. According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, people with dry skin should take showers that last only 5 to 10 minutes. Longer showers can remove moisture from your skin, per the Mayo Clinic.

Furthermore, the temperature of your shower or bath matters. Simply put, “The longer the shower, the hotter the water, the greater the evaporation sucks out the natural moisture of the skin — leaving it dry, scaly, and wrinkled,” says Leffell. Kwatra adds, “Lukewarm water is best for bathing.”

To put a further damper on things, skip the bubble bath, too, which the National Eczema Association explains can also irritate the skin. Leffell says this is due to soapsuds disrupting the skin barrier and causing moisture loss.

3. Slather a Thick Cream or Ointment on Your Skin Right After Bathing

Once your shower is done, there’s a crucial step you can take to ensure that your dry skin gets the hydration it needs. “After bathing in tepid water, moisturize immediately to help trap water in the surface cells, then pat dry,” says J. Morgan O’Donoghue, MD, a dermatologist in Sarasota, Florida. Waiting too long after your shower to apply can cause your skin to get dry and irritated, per National Eczema Association.

When choosing your moisturizer, skip thin lotions, at least while your skin is super dry. “Cream-based moisturizers are best for dry skin,” says Kwatra, because they help lock in more moisture. One option is Aveeno ($15.58, Amazon.com). If you have severely dry skin, Leffell recommends thinking about an ointment like Aquaphor ($9.58, Amazon.com).

Another option to consider is using a post-shower oil, which prevents water from evaporating on your skin, according to the Mayo Clinic. Make sure any oil, ointment, or cream is fragrance-free, says the American Academy of Dermatology, because added fragrances can irritate dry, sensitive skin.

4. Moisturize the Air in Your Living Space

Just as it’s crucial for you to moisturize your skin, it’s also important to make sure there’s enough moisture in your air. Low humidity can lead to dry skin and irritate your nasal passages, according to the Mayo Clinic. Aim for a 30 to 50 percent humidity level, but adjust as needed. “Any increase over the actual humidity in the room should help,” adds Leffell.

To gauge the humidity level in your home, buy a simple hygrometer that measures the humidity, recommends the Cleveland Clinic. These can be found at a local hardware store. If your air isn’t humid enough, invest in a humidifier that can be easily cleaned. The Cleveland Clinic warns that it’s essential to properly clean a humidifier by changing the water in the tank each day to prevent bacteria growth and washing the bucket as well as the filter every two or three days.  For a humidifier, Leffell recommends a product that, at a minimum, can humidify the bedroom so you at least get about eight hours of less dry air. One option is Vicks Filter-Free Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier ($39.86, Amazon.com).

Also, be mindful of the overall temperature in your house. “Keep the temperature in the room as low as tolerable because hot air itself is drying,” says Leffell.

5. Wear Skin-Loving Fabrics Like Cotton — and Avoid Irritating Materials Such as Wool

It’s time for a closet makeover, especially if you’ve got a case of dry, itchy skin. Kwatra recommends cotton-based clothing, since the material is good at absorbing sweat. “Some fabrics, such as wool, can worsen itching,” he says. According to Harvard Health Publishing, other fabrics may irritate your skin as well. The National Eczema Association says that spandex can be a culprit. So pay attention to what clothes might be causing your itchy outbreaks, then donate or recycle them.

And just like you want to go fragrance-free with your cleanser and moisturizer, it’s important to choose fragrance-free laundry detergents, per Harvard. Last, skip the fabric softener, which can be irritating.

6. Shield Your Skin From Sun Damage, Which Can Increase Itchiness

Warm rays can do a number on your skin, especially if you stay out in the sun and don’t protect your skin properly. “Chronically sun-damaged skin has a poor stratum corneum, so sun-damaged skin is likely to be drier and thus more itchy at times,” says Leffell. According to Harvard Health Publishing, chronic sun damage can even happen to younger people.

Then there are other sun-skin problems. “Acute sun injury — from a sunburn, for example — makes the skin dry and itchy for other reasons: The stratum corneum has been physically damaged,” Leffell explains.

So for your skin’s sake, stay safe when outdoors. The American Cancer Society recommends seeking shade when you can and wearing appropriate coverage: a hat, long pants, a long-sleeve shirt (some clothes are even made with built-in UV protection), sunglasses, and sunscreen. The organization suggests avoiding going out in the middle of the day, when UV rays are the strongest (between 10 a.m and 4 p.m.).

In terms of sunscreen, the American Cancer Society says to look for water-resistant products that have broad-spectrum protection, which shields you from both UVA and UVB rays, with an SPF of at least 30 or higher. Then don’t forget to reapply as indicated on the label.

7. Build a Balanced, Plant-Based Diet to Help Fight Inflammation

A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, grains, seeds, and nuts — the makings of a plant-based menu — is good for you inside and out. For example, fruits and vegetables can protect your skin from itch-inducing sun damage, according to the Cleveland Clinic. “These foods also contain very important good bacteria to strengthen your microbiome, which we are learning is associated with skin inflammation,” says Kwatra. Research published in February 2019 in the journal Archivum Immunologiae et Therapiae Experimentalis found that an impaired microbiome can play a role in inflammatory skin diseases from eczema to psoriasis.

Also, consider eating more seafood. Fish with omega-3 fatty acids can help fight inflammation that the Cleveland Clinic says is associated with dry, itchy skin.

Overall, aim for balance. Certain nutrient deficiencies (like a lack of protein, vitamin C, or zinc) can cause dryness and flakiness, according to the University of California in Los Angeles.

8. Follow Healthy Habits to Keep Skin Inflammation Further at Bay

Have you always wanted to quit smoking? This may give you the motivation you need:

Besides its obvious health risks, smoking damages the skin. “Nicotine can cause blood vessels to constrict and reduce blood flow to the skin, causing drier skin — yet another reason to quit smoking,” says Kwatra. On top of that, smoking can hasten the aging process of your skin, leading to issues like early wrinkles, puffiness below your eyes, and an uneven skin complexion, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Also, banking enough sleep is beneficial for your skin. That’s because a lack of shut-eye can release the stress hormone cortisol, according to the National Sleep Foundation, which leads to inflammation of the skin and, potentially, flare-ups of acne, psoriasis and eczema.

You might want to consider exercising, too. While the National Eczema Association points out that sweat may trigger flare-ups for some people with eczema, movement may be influential because it supports immunity and quality sleep. The society recommends showering directly after you exercise.

9. Soothe Dry Feet With This Easy Nighttime Routine

Don’t ignore dry feet or cracked heels. According to the Mayo Clinic, dry cracks in your heels can lead to deeper fissures if left untreated, ultimately upping your odds of an infection.

To help combat dry, uncomfortable feet, moisturize them twice a day, the Mayo Clinic suggests. “Also, don’t forget the eight hours when you are not awake — moisturizing before bed will make a difference,” says Leffell. While this advice applies to the entire body, try the Mayo Clinic’s bedtime regime for dry feet: Soak your feet for a few minutes, use a loofah to lightly remove dead skin, follow up with a heavy cream on your feet, and then place your feet right into socks to allow the moisturizer to soak in.

10. Don’t Hesitate to Seek Medical Treatment for Seriously Irritated Skin

Dry skin may be a sign of something more serious, like eczema or psoriasis, according to Harvard Health Publishing. See a board-certified dermatologist if you have one or more of the following symptoms, says Dr. O’Donoghue:

  • Your skin doesn’t improve in spite of your best efforts.
  • Dryness and itching are severe enough to keep you awake at night.
  • You have open sores or infections from scratching.
  • You have large areas of scaling or peeling skin.

With cold weather finally here, you may be experiencing itchy skin. This is normal — as humidity in the air drops, the oil that lubricates our skin is decreased causing dry, itchy skin. For mild cases, moisturizing with lotion after showering can help.

“Living in Central Florida, we don’t get the extreme cold, and drying effects of central heat on our skin,” Dr. David Weinstein, dermatologist at UCF Health said. “If you are experiencing itchy skin there could be a skin condition at hand, especially if the skin is red or flaky. Most conditions can be treated easily with topical creams or changes in hygiene products.”

You may not be aware that the following can contribute to your dry skin:

  • Harsh soaps – There is no strong benefit to using antibacterial soap over regular hand soap to wash your hands. Plus the milder stuff is more skin friendly.
  • Dish washing – People often forget this type of soap on their hands, and it can be super drying since these soaps are formulated to whisk away oil. Use gloves to protect your hands while doing the dishes.
  • Long, hot showers – Cut your showers short and use warm water, not hot water. Long baths or showers increase the loss of natural oils, which increases dry skin. Apply moisturizer right after showering to lock-in moisture.
