Another new white gel pen that has been added to our collection of white pens. Gel comes out in a pure white color, great for artwork and crafts. Also well balanced for pen spinning.
Otherwise known as HGGs, these Hybrid Gel Grip pens feature a dimpled grip and write in nice 0.8 mm rich lines, yet have a thin body. Balanced weight and shape also make them great pens for spinning. White and silver colors write well on dark paper.

This thing is really weird. I used it to highlight my copic art and it actually
absorbs the colour underneath. Plus, if I go over it with more marker, it almost
disappears. Good if I want to add subtle details, but if you’re looking for
something that is solid and actually stays white, this isn’t the pen.

The Best White Ink Pens For Black Paper
Unsharpen may earn a commission when you buy through links on our site.
We talk about the color of ink a lot here at Unsharpen, but it’s not too often that we discuss the total absence of color. It’s time to discuss the best white ink pens.
White ink pens are useful for drawing on black and other very dark colored paper. They come up much more for art purposes than anything else, so general stationery kits don’t tend to include a white pen, but when you need one nothing else will do the job.
White ink pens are usually gel pens that carry a pigment-based ink. This is the case because dye is used to darken objects and white dye basically isn’t something that exists (for practical purposes). And this isn’t a bad thing: pigment-based inks are effective, affordable, and are water-resistant.
The Best White Ink Pens
Here are our picks for the top white ink pens sold today.
Uni-ball Signo UM-153
The Signo UM-153 is a superb white pen that is loved and trusted by many artists. The UM-153 is known as the “Signo Broad” thanks to the wide 1.0 mm writing tip. The wide tip combined with a loose gel ink means a heavy amount of white ink is put down on your paper, which means excellent opacity and very clean lines. The ink is also of archival quality and waterproof thanks to the pigments in the ink.
The main downsides of this pen is that the ink can feel a bit loose, making it a less exact than some other models and a bit tougher on paper. The pens also run out quickly thanks to so much ink being laid down as you write, especially if you are coloring in large sections.
Price: $2.00 per pen
Sakura Gelly Roll
It’s not only the original gel pen, the Sakura Gelly Roll is also an excellent white ink pen. In fact the white Gelly Roll is one of the most popular colors as it’s just so useful and well-behaved. While the Gelly Roll doesn’t really focus on sizes, in the white you can buy the pen in 0.6 mm, 0.8 mm, and 1.0 mm, which is a rarity for Sakura.
We’ve written extensively about Sakura’s Gelly Roll, as it was the first gel pen invented. Not only does it has a storied history, it remains a great gel pen.
Price: $1.50 per pen
Pentel Milky Pop Gel Pen
Pentel is known for their excellent gel ink pens thanks to the Energel series, so it should come as little surprised that the company has a solid white ink pen. The Milky Pop has a 0.8mm (medium) writing tip, smooth ink, and good opacity. Like the Signo Broad, it works well with photos as well as black paper… which is not something all white pens can do.
This pen tends to be a little easier to find then the others as it’s sold all over, where Uni’s Signo and the Gelly Roll are mostly found at specialty pen retailers.
Price: $2.00 per pen
Good White Ink Pens (And Some Markers)
While the Uni-ball Signo and the Gelly Roll are truly the best white ink pens and the Pentel is a solid option, there are many other white pens that aren’t bad. Keep in mind that for every white ink gel pen there are a number of paint markers, so many people opt for those instead of a true pen.
- Uni Posca White Paint Marker – It’s a marker, no a pen, but the Posca is a popular option for white ink needs.
- Sharpie Paint Oil-Based Marker – Another marker, but the oil-based paint Sharpie offers serious coverage in white. For the most pen-like experience, get the Extra Fine size.
- Pilot Juice Up gel pen – The Juice Up is sold in white in a 0.4 mm. It’s an OK pen but 0.4 mm doesn’t seem like enough width to really get a solid white line.
- Pentel Hybrid Gel Grip DX – This pen is sort of like the Signo Broad above, but it’s not quite as good. The 1.0 mm tip puts down a lot of ink, perhaps too much. There is also the Pentel Hybrid Milky in white with 0.8 mm tip, which doesn’t have as strong coverage but is less messy.
What are white ink pens used for?
White ink pens have many used, but they are primarily used for drawing or coloring on dark paper. If you have a piece of black construction paper and you want a color that truly pops out you need a white pen or paint marker. White pens are always useful for writing on photographs, magazines, and other glossy surfaces, assuming you get a good model with pigmented ink. White ink pens can also cover up ink, acting as an eraser, and they can be used to create a border when you are painting with water color and don’t want the paint to flow past as set point.
White and Metallic Silhouette Sketch Pen Review
As you may or may not know I finally got the Silhouette CAMEO…yup totally been working on the Portrait, without a problem in the world, for about a year now. But I put on my big girl pants a few weeks ago when the price was right and got myself a Silhouette CAMEO bundle.
The bundle included the Metallic Silhouette Sketch Pens which I was excited about because I’ve honestly never used Silhouette’s brand of sketch pens before. I always make my own sketch pens or use a regular ol’ Bic with my Amy Chomas holder.
Anyway…I thought how perfect the white Silhouette Sketch Pen would be to make a chalkboard-style Christmas card. The pens fit in the holder perfectly so there’s no messing around with a popsicle stick to make sure the pen doesn’t drag across the page. That’s a big plus for me!
I sketched on black construction paper with the white pen but when in dried, the white was very subtle and more like a gray which was not really the look I was going for.
(Note: I intentially did not edit this photo in any way so you could see the true colors.)
It would have been like totally awesome if the white was actually white. I am so bummed to say I’m disappointed in the lack of white-ness and brightness here. It may be merry, but it’s not bright…(sorry, had to.)
To give the card a little glam, I also did an internal offset on the wreath and switched out my white sketch pen to the metallic bronze. I am much more satisfied with the bronze than the white which is kind of a bummer since I think the white is probably the color I’d use most in the whole set.
I am still testing some other chalkboard pens with tips 1mm-3mm so I can get the very fine point and I am hoping that at least one of them can pass my white and bright test.

Best gel pens for writing, drawing and sketching –
What is a gel pen and which are the best colored gel pen sets?
Gel pens are roller ball pens that have a water based jelly with the color pigment suspended in the jelly solution. They are also known as jelly roll pens and are the best colourful pens particularly for writing and illustrating on darker paper and smooth non tactile surfaces.
There are few pens that write on black paper and Jelly pens are ideal for this. A white gel pen, for drawing over other colors, is really effective as the ink is quite thick and solid.
If you are wondering where to buy gel pens we look at 5 of the top rated gel pens in sets that have high level reviews by existing customers. There are links to buy, offering a great range of multi colored gel pens.
Top Quality Gel Pens – set of 60 colourful gel pens
Beautiful set of 60 jelly pens in a plastic wallet style container. This set is perfect not only for cartoons and adult colouring books but also covers a wide variety of crafting.
Amazon product detail states that each pen is its own individual color ‘with no duplicates’ giving you a huge range of gel pen colors to chose from. However there are neon and glitter pens in this set which are the same color but obviously giving a different finish. There are actually 42 different colors per pack.
All in all this is a very good set with plenty of varied colors including 18 glitter style pens. The pen set was #1 in Amazons technical pens and #1 in the drawing supplies categories. There is also the option to buy a double set at a better price point.

Friskars is a very well known brand and this set is a real favourite with customers with 1000+ positive reviews averaging 4 Amazon star rating. There are some issues with variation in the stated colors, ink content and ‘nib skipping’, however for general use this is considered to be good value.

AmazaPens Gel Coloring Pens 24 assorted pen pack
Twenty four color gel pen set with – twelve Glitter (1mm nib), six Neon (0.8mm nib) and six Pastel (0.8mm nib).
The pens are stated as having 40% more ink so they last a lot longer than other comparable brands and really smooth to use. This claim appears to be justified by the 4.9 Amazon star rating from over 400 happy customers.
A great reliable and longer lasting pack of gel pens with only the limited number of colors being the obvious drawback.

Which set has the best gel pens for writing drawing and sketching?
Out of the five gel pen sets we have looked at the two that stand out are the AmazaPens gel coloring 24 pen set with a whopping 4.9 Amazon star customer rating and appear to have larger ink capacity and the Superdoodle 36 gello pen set which rates at 4.8. The Top Quality Gel Pens (Pack of 60) gives a much larger set if you were looking for a bigger selection but has a slightly lower Amazon customer rating at 4.2

Which White Gel Pen is the Best? A Comparison.
If you like to journal or scrapbook, having a great white gel pen is really handy to have. A nice white line on a dark background can have a LOT of impact and “pop!” But which white gel pen really delivers?? I was on a quest to find out and today I’m sharing my results of the American Crafts Ultimate Gel Pens white pastel, Sanford Uni-Ball Gel Impact Pen -White, andSakura 58471 Souffle 3-Dimensional Opaque Ink Pen, White
From Top: American Crafts Ultimate Gel Pen, Uniball Signo White Pigment Gel Pen, Souffle White Gel Pen by Sakura.
So first, let’s take a closer look at the nibs and how the gel ink presents as you are using the pen.
The American Crafts pen presents as opaque ink right from the ball-point nib. What you see is what you get. The ink doesn’t seem to darken when it dries.
The Uni-ball Signo also has very opaque ink right from the nib. The line is very crisp and the ink stands out well.
The Sakura Souffle’s ink comes out clear- but becomes opaque as it dries. This is a unique challenge if you have a hard time seeing what you’ve drawn.
OK! Now let’s take a look at how these gel pens perform on darker papers.
I’m not sure if it shows up on your monitor, but the Uni-ball Signo showed up as the most crisp and opaque white gel pen of the three.
So that’s pretty good for solid color papers. But what happens if you want to use patterned or printed paper. For the next swatches I used sheet music paper that had been stenciled and also some white paper that had spray mists printed on them.
As you can see- or not see, as the case may be- you can barely see the Amercian Crafts pen in the bottom sample. The Souffle pens showed up, but the results were much more subtle. Again, the Uni-ball Opaque Gel was the clear stand-out.
Lastly, I thought I’d double-check how the Uni-Ball performs on lighter paper. After all, that might be the biggest challenge- white pen on a light back ground. So I did a bit of doodling in my Smash Book. Take a peek:
Subtle, but definitely effective!
So there you have it. I know there are probably other white gel pens out there, but these were the 3 available at my local brick-and-mortar stores. I’m going to stock up on Uni-Ball Signo White Gel Pens and keep one with my Smash Book, one with my art journal, and another in my studio. (OK, maybe two.) I’m happy to find a white gel pen that really works!
Do you use white opaque gel pens? Did I miss your favorite- or confirm it? I’d love to hear your comments.

Pen Review: White Pen Comparison: Gelly Roll, Posca 0.7 and Pitt 1.5 Bullet Nib
Review by Tina Koyama
I’m always on the lookout for opaque white pens. They come in handy for many urban sketching tasks, such as signage, fountains and small highlights. Of course, I use them most often on toned paper, especially in my favorite red Field Notes Brand Sweet Tooth notebook (no longer available at Field Notes, but possibly still available at some retail stores).
Years ago, I compared the Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pen (2.5mm bullet point), Sakura Pen-Touch Paint Marker and Uniball Signo gel pen. More recently I looked at the Uni Posca Paint Marker (extra fine bullet point) and the Sailor Mini Correction Pen here at the Desk.
Although my general white go-to the past few years has been the Sakura Gelly Roll (0.8mm), I’m not always happy with it. It’s fine tipped and opaque enough to draw or make highlights on dark paper, and I use it that way satisfactorily most of the time. But since gel ink is water-soluble, it tends to activate watercolor pencil pigment rather than write over it, making the line inconsistent or invisible.
I decided it was time to try a couple of new white pens that recently crossed my ever-watchful radar: One is a Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pen with a 1.5mm bullet nib (much smaller than the 2.5mm I had tried previously). The other is a Uni Posca Paint Marker with a 0.7mm “pin type” nib (which came in my October SketchBox, but I don’t see it sold individually there yet).
Although the Gelly Roll has a 0.8mm nib, it looks slightly finer than the Posca’s 0.7mm point, though it could just look that way because the Gelly Roll is less opaque. The Faber-Castell Pitt is the least opaque of the three, and strangely, its 1.5mm tip looks about the same size as the Posca’s 0.7. I have no idea how pen points are measured. In any case, in my scribble tests below (made in a black Stillman & Birn Nova sketchbook), I applied water on the right side, and none of the inks showed appreciable smudging, even though I know the Gelly Roll has been known to dissolve a bit when washed. The other two are described as waterproof.
Next I ran each white pen over various water-soluble and waterproof media. All wet media were left to dry completely before I scribbled over them. No wonder I’ve been less than happy with the Gelly Roll when used with my favorite watercolor pencils – it performed the worst over Caran d’Ache Museum Aquarelles, both dry and activated. None of the three white pens wrote well over the Marvy LePlume II watercolor markers, but all three showed up much better over the two waterproof brush pens – the Pentel Pocket Brush and the Sakura Pigma. Clearly, the Posca is the winner on watercolor as well as my favorite watercolor pencils (both activated and dry).
The big inconvenience with the Posca is its “pin type” nib, which means it must be primed each time before use. By priming, I mean that you must jab the spring-loaded nib repeatedly on scrap paper for a while until the ink flows. Moreover, the ink is actually paint that must be shaken each time (you can hear an agitator inside rattling around to aid with mixing). Skip either of these steps, and the pen dispenses a colorless liquid. The priming and shaking tasks are annoying when all you want to do is make a quick highlight (sketch victims get away quickly!).
Still, the Posca’s general opacity and especially with watercolor pencils has won me over.

How to Draw on Black Paper
For the past two weeks I have been working on a set of chalkboard style illustrations on black paper. This inspired me to write an article about this really fun process.
Drawing on black paper is a novelty. I think that its special appeal lies in several reasons, the first of which is the difficulty of doing this kind of work without special tools. The artwork on black paper is impressive because it says, “Look at this cool pen and what I can do with it!” The second reason is the problem of bulk printing on the printer. By and large, printers can only print with color ink, which means that printing on black paper almost never happens (unless the printing company has a dedicated printer).Bottom line: When you send someone a drawing on black paper, it immediately says, “I took the time to make a gift by hand especially for you.” But mostly, however, working on black paper just looks cool.
I’m going to show you some tools and techniques for writing and drawing on black paper; for all of them I would recommend purchasing one of these guys:
The tool shown in the image above has been my savior for the past couple of weeks. It’s a soapstone pencil, and it’s a wonderful find (well, for writing on dark paper). Typically, soapstone is used by quilters for marking on fabric. However, it can be used successfully to mark lines or create a draft on dark paper. And best of all – you don’t even need to wash it! You can simply wipe it down with a soft cloth to help keep the ink from smudging.
First, let’s look at the simplest technique. It requires basic tools, but the knowledge of fountain pen calligraphy can be dispensed with. First, look for the white Sakura Gellyroll pen.
I ordered from Amazon, but they can be found in most stores for about $ 1.50 apiece. Then take out the colored pencils.
Start with a soapstone pencil. I love portraying jewelry, so I’ve drawn a simple diamond outline below that you can do just as well.
(I’ve added dimensions for convenience in the image below).
Then take a colored pencil and paint over the areas in the drawing as desired. It is important to do this before adding white ink; if you wait and do it later, the design won’t look as clean. In this case, the pencils will inevitably color or shade the white ink.
Once you have added color to your drawing, prepare your gel pen by painting it on a draft. This step is not absolutely necessary, but it can be helpful. Sometimes ink from previous uses will curl up on the nib and may make the starting point less attractive.
Now just trace the lines from the soapstone …
Once you are finished stroking, wipe off the soapstone marks with a soft cloth. (You can also use an eraser). The finished product is a design worthy of a Whole Foods chalk board.
I also really like metallic paint markers for drawing on black paper.
These pens are really just paint in the shape of a marker. You need to shake them well for the paint to start flowing, but the results are worth it!
This simple design and color scheme looks like it can be framed against a white backdrop in an ultra-modern home. You can of course use it that way (and if you do, say you got it from an art gallery for thousands of dollars), or just send it as a minimalist greeting card. You can write a message above the drawing using the Gellyroll pen if you wish.
The special feature of designer paint markers is their enchanting shine … these dots look like tiny, shiny coins that shimmer in the light.
If you buy a marker, you can also use it to add metal borders to envelopes, party invitations, or anything else.On the package of the marker it says that you can even draw with it on furniture, but I haven’t dared to try it that way yet.
Moving on. I have written about techniques and tools that do not require knowledge of calligraphy and fountain pen. The following tools described will require this kind of knowledge, but in reality, using a calligraphic pen is quite simple, and I sincerely encourage you to try it if you can’t! Below you can see all the materials that could come in handy for creating calligraphy or drawings on black paper. There are likely to be more suitable black paper supplies around the world, but this is what I know and can tell you today.
My choice for writing on black paper is Winsor & Newton white ink. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Dr. Ph. Martin’s, but I haven’t run out of ink yet, so I haven’t bought any Dr. Ph. Martin’s for comparison. From what I’ve read about Martin’s, they behave the same in use and have the same quirks.
You may be wondering what I mean by “quirks”. The first feature is this: this ink may be too liquid for comfortable (and opaque) use. To solve this problem, you can leave the ink on for a couple of hours with the lid open to allow some of the liquid to evaporate. White ink should have a consistency that resembles a cross between fat-free yogurt and cream. Another feature is that this ink tends to get thicker over time. This is not a problem either, just add water, screw on the cap and shake! I add water to the ink below:
There are several nibs that work better with white ink than others. My favorite choice for writing with white ink is the Brause Rose nibs because they are stiff and wide enough to hold the viscous ink.
However, you can use almost any handpiece. The only pen that gave me a lot of inconvenience for various reasons is Nikko G.I did not include it in the list below because the results were truly terrible. The tip was not flexible enough to work well with white; but the problem may be with the user, not the tools.
Since white ink is just acrylic anyway, you can use it to write onto any paper surface! I love making envelopes from vintage magazine pages, so I always use white ink to write on the smooth surface of the magazine (Gellyroll ink will never stick to that).
I can talk endlessly about gold ink in the Finetec palette. To get started with them, dampen the paint with a couple of drops of water.
After the water has been absorbed (ideally this will take about 3 minutes), stir the paints with a brush. The consistency you want is not as thick as the consistency you got with white ink. In this case, you need to strive for the consistency of the cream.
Once you have reached the perfect consistency and are ready to write, brush the gold onto the back of the nib as shown in the picture below, then write!
As you can see, golds are shiny, opaque and look great. You can use them to write words (as pictured below) or just to emphasize in illustrations … whatever you want!
The last thing I will tell you about is gouache. I want to absolve myself of responsibility and say that I rarely use this material, because it is still a hassle for me. However, there are many calligraphers who admire me (Albrecht Clauss among them) who use gouache beautifully and with ease. I am unfortunately not getting the same dramatic results, but it might just be my hazy Walmart gouache kit.
To prepare the gouache for writing, squeeze some paint into a container such as a palette or wineglass.
Add some water …
Then mix until you get a consistency similar to drinking yoghurt.
Gouache works the same as the Finetec gold palette; it should be applied to the back of the nib.
You can now use it for recording!
I personally get a dull, matte result from working with gouache, but I’m sure that high-quality gouaches have brighter pigments and achieve brighter results.Anyway, if you’re interested in writing in unique colors on black paper, gouache is a great choice!
Finally, you may wonder where to buy your stock of black cards. To be honest, I buy standard sized sheets for a printer from stores, then cut them into whatever format I want. It’s a good, economical system that allows you to make an A7 card one day and an A4 card the next!
Hope you were inspired by this article, and if you have any thoughts on creating drawings on black paper, let us know in the comments!

Gel pen manicure | Customer Reviews
Yes, yes, you heard right, with the help of a gel pen. What role does it play here and how to do it all – all this can be found under the cut.
A long time ago, at the dawn of my sweetness, I tried several times to paint on my nails with a gel pen. I was attracted by the fact that in this way you can draw anything, as opposed to using brushes for manicure or dots.
Then here I saw several posts with manicure on film, which is completely transferred to the nail, but the girl’s drawing was done with stamping. And I thought, why not combine both ideas, i.e. film + gel pen. And I started experimenting.
Important steps + some points and tips
1. Ready-to-dry manicure with monochromatic varnish. In my case, white China Glaze White On White, I imitated paper)
! Important: The base varnish must be completely dry, otherwise you will get smears under the film, it will not be able to stretch or move without touching the varnish.
2. Then we need a film.Plain food grade or polyethylene.
! Important: I must say right away that cling film is much more difficult to work with, I messed up several options until I more or less understood how to handle it. She is very thin and agile. Polyethylene from regular bags is better. But it also all depends on the quality, thickness and other parameters, so see for yourself, try it.
3. Apply a pattern with a regular gel pen (you can also use a colored one). There is complete freedom of action here, but I recommend abandoning complex artistic compositions, because there is always a chance to blur the pattern, and if the lines are close to each other, the probability is even higher.
! Important: I still don’t know if a gel pen dries on such a surface, but still do not start applying immediately. Let dry for 5-10 minutes.
I drew a simple geometric pattern:
4. Then I have several options for how to glue the film to the nail. At first I tried on not dried varnish, but realized that this was not an option. Then I tried it on a not dry top, in principle, the option will do. And then I tried this: I drew a pattern, and on top of it, letting it dry, I applied the top directly to the film with a couple of strokes of the brush. So it becomes less delicate and uncontrollable. And it sticks well.
4. Apply the film to the nail, first leveling the central part and moving towards the edges.
5. Smooth out with a stick at the edges of the nail. Here I experimented with a different pattern. There were just a lot of attempts, so I show what I managed to shoot.
Cut off the excess with scissors. At this point, you will regret using cling film. She clings to the scissors and folds.
If you tried hard, and in the end there are no or almost no folds, dents, and everything is smooth, then you are great! If there are small creases, a good layer of the top can hide them. Well, of course, large folds and film charges will have to be removed and redone. Manicure is not easy, of course, and I myself am not sure that I will repeat it. Although I want to achieve a better result. To do this, I think, you need to experiment with the material, something not as thin as a bag, but also not thick and tough, like scotch tape.
