What Is Cardstock Printing and What Is It Good for?

What Is Cardstock Printing and What Is It Good for?

Double-Sided Cardstock Printing

When you’re planning a big event, like a wedding or gala or anything else, you need to send out invitations. The type of material typically used for invitations is cardstock, but your choices in cardstock will seem unlimited. There is no easy answer to “what type of cardstock should I use for so-and-so?”. What you want will vary, ultimately, depending on your situation and preferences.

When choosing which cardstock to use, you want to keep in mind that one material may make your invitation or project look washed or splotchy. If you’re willing to play with the process, risk a little trial and error, and trust in advice from experts, then you’ll find the perfect piece of cardstock for your needs. Here’s all the information you need to know on cardstock and what it’s suitable for.

How Do You Plan on Printing?

How you plan on cardstock printing can significantly affect how your project comes out. You can use an at-home printer to meet your needs. It’s quicker, reasonably straightforward, and affordable, but you have a higher risk of messing up the print job. If you do enough research and consult a local print shop, it can be done. If you choose to have a professional print what you need, then it will be costlier, but you know that they’ll turn out perfect.

Cardstock Types

Cardstock comes in a variety of materials, feels, texture, and prices. To best understand how to print on this medium, you need to understand the most prominent of these materials, here’s a rundown.

  1. Cotton Cardstock

Cotton cardstock is a favorite for those who want to laser print. The material has a smooth feel but still is very absorbent. It gives your project a modern and clean look. It’s also a material that is considered “photo safe,” meaning that it’s suitable for picture printing.

Cotton cardstock only comes in three colors: grey, white, and ivory. Cotton is more expensive than other materials, but the price is justified by the weight, which starts at 92#, and the overall quality of the paper.

Pros

  • It’s photo safe.
  • It’s absorbent.
  • It has a modern and clean look.

Cons

  • It only comes in three colors.
  • The price is higher than the other materials available.
  1. Linen Cardstock

Linen cardstock, unsurprisingly, is made to look like a linen fabric. It has the same finish and texture as the woven fabric. It’s visually exciting but straightforward as well. It’s also a material that can hide imperfections, but imperfections only arise if you choose to print yourself. Colors are more varied than cotton but still limited. It’s a more affordable option than cotton cardstock, but still of good quality.

Pros

  • It is affordable.
  • It’s more visually appealing than many other materials.
  • It can hide imperfections.

Cons

  • It has a limited color range.
  1. Canvas Cardstock

Canvas cardstock has a texture like linen cardstock. The feel and texture are a bit more noticeable than linen. It’s substantial and thick, usually weighing in at 80#. The basketweave feel is particularly prominent, which works well with other lighter materials.  Canvas cardstock can be found in a rather large variety of colors. It is on the higher price end on par with cotton cardstock.

Pros

  • It has a great texture.
  • It comes in a variety of colors.
  • It’s thick.

Cons

  1. Parchment

Parchment is a cardstock material that looks very vintage, which is what a lot of people want for their wedding invitation or other projects. The material is semi-translucent and thin with a slightly marbled look. It only comes in 65# but can pair nicely with cotton cardstock. The feel of parchment is soft and subtle. Parchment usually comes in various shades of brown, but you can find a few pastel colors if you try. Parchment is one of the cheaper options, coming in around or a little less expensive than linin cardstock.

Pros

  • It can be paired with thicker materials.
  • It gives you a very specific feel.
  • It’s subtle and soft.
  • It’s a more affordable option.

Cons

  • It’s pretty thin.
  • It doesn’t come in a vast range of colors.

What Is Cardstock Used For?

Cardstock can be used for a variety of projects. The most popular use for cardstock is for wedding invitations. You can also use cardstock for origami projects, scrapbooks, holiday cards, bookmarks, cartography, posters, and more. You can use cardstock to do so much.

Cardstock Photo Prints

Photos render great on cardstock. The thick paper makes pictures stand out and helps deliver effective messages. Photo printing on cardstock is easy with us, and you can send us your custom designs to help you here. Printing on card stock isn’t tricky, but you have to make sure you have the right printer for your type of cardstock since some cardstocks are too thick for some printers.

Test Print

When you’ve decided on the cardstock you want, you should ensure it’s what you want by doing a test print. See if you can arrange a test print from the company that you’ve chosen. You could be surprised by how your opinion changes once you’ve seen it.

Where to Get Cardstock Printing

Now that you’ve chosen the cardstock you want, you have to decide where you want to get cardstock printing. Doing it on your own can seem easy, but it can get complicated fast. There are printing companies that have experts that can help you, like ours, at Foam Core Print. We’re equipped to give you the best product possible through cardstock printing at the most affordable prices.

The 7 Best Online Printing Services of 2021

FAQs

What Are Online Printing Services?

Twenty years ago, online printing services changed the world by making it easy to upload photos or design business cards online and have them custom-printed and mailed right to a home or office. Today, customers can design pillows, mugs, and wall art of their favorite photos; print trade show banners, brochures, and menus; and order custom holiday cards and wedding invitations.

What’s more, due to the batch order processing and printing technology most online printing services use, these products are much more affordable than they once were when the only option was to order directly from walk-in print shops or vanity gift manufacturers.

How Does Online Printing Work?

Most online printing services make it easy for complete beginners to design and order just about any print product. Professionals needing business cards, for instance, can start with predesigned templates and customize them by uploading a logo or even an entire premade design to the website.

From there, users can preview the final design and adjust as needed and select the size, paper, type of finish, and any other special effects. Most services let the customer preview the final design online and some will even ship a free sample before completing the order.

Every service can walk users through the process of uploading images that will print well and also offer professional design assistance and support as needed. Users can upload images from their phones, computers, or even social media accounts and have them print out in crisp, rich colors.

How Long Does Online Printing Take?

Due to the largely automated process and batch printing most online printers employ, customers can expect to get their designs printed and shipped within just a few days for simple products like photo prints and business cards, or up to two weeks for more complex items like large canvas prints and uniquely shaped business cards and invitations.

What Are the Expected Costs of Online Printing Services?

The cost of online printing can vary widely by product and company and are often based on quality. Vistaprint charges just $20 for 500 standard business cards, while MOO charges the same price for just 50 cards.

Most services try to stay cheaper than brick-and-mortar printers since they have to add shipping costs into every order. Snapfish, for instance, charges just $0.09 for one 4×6.

Shipping prices also vary widely by provider. Vistaprint, for instance, charges $8.99 for four- to six-day shipping on orders between $15.01 and $35.00, while MOO charges $15.75 for six-day shipping on orders up to $19.99. While none of the services we reviewed offers free shipping as a standard, most run regular specials and deals that include free shipping.

How We Chose the Best Online Printing Services

We looked at over two dozen online printing services for this review. We first looked at providers that offered the widest range of services, best quality, and best price for quality overall. Next, we looked at the top services in each category and chose the best based on ease of use, the range and quality of their products, and the overall price.

In the end, we found that most top online printers balance price and quality pretty well with a few offering higher-quality print products understandably for higher prices. Most worked hard to make designing and ordering products easy for non-designers and many offered some sort of expedited shipping to help fulfill last-minute orders.

90,000 The person who does not give up

The only one who survived

In 2017, Oleg Paukov was named one of the best social entrepreneurs in Russia: having changed several professions, he created the Green Business project in Kaliningrad and launched a system of separate collection and sorting of waste among city residents. A year ago, in the field of cardboard collection, he had 30-40 competitors, but when the market sank, he was the only one who survived.

After the expedition to the Curonian Spit, the Zero Waste project team came to Oleg to hand over the recyclable materials collected on the Baltic Sea coast.

Recyclable materials – above the head

Oleg lives in a garden house, works six days a week, daily unloads 3-4 tons of recyclable materials himself. , but he is enthusiastic and optimistic – this is the portrait of a successful “trash businessman”.

The Green Delo warehouse is located in a gray industrial zone, and is distinguished only by a high fence.“There used to be a netting, and every day they threw 3-4 bags of garbage at us, we had to fence ourselves off,” says Oleg.

Behind the fence I see a frightening picture: recyclable materials are piled above my head, I walk along a narrow path between mountains of waste paper, plastic, boxes, cans and meet Oleg at a cargo gazelle. “There were no such mountains before. There is no one to sell, but sooner or later there will be, ”he says optimistically.

“For example, I used to accept broken household appliances, my partners took everything out, disassembled, kept the metal for themselves, and they returned clean plastic to me: no bolt or piece of iron is very convenient. Then there was nowhere to take, now I have 30 big bags buried here. Or here’s the waste paper: now the factory accepts only white writing paper, newspapers and cardboard, and everything else lies here. What they give me, I add up, I do not throw away. Will go away, I believe. ”

“Find a better normal job”

Oleg learned about the separate collection four years ago from a TV story. And immediately caught fire. First I gave my mom a task to sort.

– So, I say, do not throw these positions away for a month and see how much you accumulate, – says Oleg.

– How did she react?

– Well, like everyone else. No one was enthusiastic. Then I had a girlfriend. She was the last one to give up, said: “No, that’s it. ” In short, [I] don’t have a girlfriend now. “You have invented some nonsense, find a normal job better. Because this is some kind of garbage. ”

But I persuaded my mother, she counted, then asked my friends about the same and figured that in a month you can save 5 kilograms. Before that, I worked as a taxi driver for a year, so I read how much I would drive and spend on gasoline, and decided: you can try.

I was told: “You, eco-addicts who separate garbage, are at most 10 people,” but in fact it turns out that every fifth resident of the city used the services of the “Green Business”.

Love for order … and for garbage

Now Oleg works alone: six days a week at seven in the morning he leaves on request. Residents of the city leave them through social networks and the website. You can hand over from five kilograms: waste paper, PET bottles, transparent polyethylene, aluminum and tin cans. The payment is symbolic – a ruble per kilogram, but you can not take the money, but transfer it to the development of the “Green Cause” or to a charitable organization.

Every day Oleg travels from 20 to 40 points. During the day, he alone fills and unloads the car body 3-4 times, in the evening he returns to the warehouse and sorts the collected items by half past seven. Once among the waste paper there was a Catholic Bible, printed in the 70s of the XIX century, Oleg saved it.

“The average weight of the application is 12 kilograms.Usually I accept five or more, but I can take less from grandmothers who find it difficult to accumulate such a volume, ”says Oleg and shows a notebook where addresses, weight and amounts are filled in in small neat handwriting, and there are also notes on which fund needs to be transferred money. And in bales of recyclable materials, and in tidy records, you can feel the love for order … and for garbage.

Shrinked and survived

“The first year I worked alone,” says Oleg. – I was like behind enemy lines: on the territory of the industrial zone, where we are now, four large purveyors of recyclable materials and cardboard collectors worked.

To conclude regular export contracts [and get a kind of export monopoly from a particular enterprise – note. Greenpeace], I found an accountant. We worked together for six months. Then he took a chance, took two cars, two drivers and two sorters. I thought: if they do half of what I do, it will pay off. The money set aside would have been enough for them to pay only for one month, but everything worked out, and for two years we worked with eight people. ”

Then the market dropped. The new Customs Code of the Eurasian Economic Union obliged Kaliningrad entrepreneurs to pay duties on garbage disposal outside the region. Those who received a million a month did not agree to receive 200 thousand, so they retrained for another activity.

“There are no competitors left even for cardboard – the price has dropped. It was on the cardboard that I made money for salaries, development, in order to promote separate collection. The second car dealt only with cardboard and traveled to organizations. The price of cardboard fell more than twice, but we collected several types: they do not take it, they sold it, and survived. I don’t know business laws, I didn’t study it.He shrank a little, but survived. There are no credits and there weren’t any. But since May I have been working alone again.

I’m not happy that the others have closed, but I’m glad I resisted. Hands do not drop, I wonder. Now is a period of stagnation, but I still have growth: 3-4%, but growth. Fuck! ” – Oleg is surprised.

Next, Oleg plans to look for investors or funds and develop the processing of what is difficult to hand over. “A constant buzz with glossy magazines: we take it, we don’t take it. – says Oleg.- There is more chemistry and paint [than in newspapers], but not much cellulose. I am thinking of making paper towels for car services, pots for seedlings or even groins – constructions for strengthening the dunes on the Curonian Spit ”.

Kaliningraders trust the Green Business, so it stays afloat. The temporarily buried mountains of recyclable materials are waste that the townspeople have responsibly sorted out and handed over for recycling. Now Oleg does not accept some species, but he does not throw them away either. He is sure that someday he will hand over everything that he has accumulated: in four years the market for recyclable materials has changed a lot and will change again.

Thank you for reading to the end! We love to tell the stories of people who are changing the world for the better. They inspire others to create new projects, and we have examples like this. Support our work so that we can continue to talk about how each person can help solve global problems.

Moscow artist Katya Rozhkova on the exposition “White School” and how important it is for “the beauty of an idea to match the beauty of an artistic solution”

In Kaluga, where he spent the second half of his life and died the grandfather of Soviet cosmonautics K.E. Tsiolkovsky, the festival of contemporary art “Tsiolkovsky Fest” has been held for the ninth time. The Kaluga Innovative Cultural Center has become its main site. The festival team, headed by the curator Anna Senatova, chose “Reflection” as the theme. Exhibition openings, happenings and performances, the first Kaluga poetic SLEM, lectures by the capital’s art critics and philosophers Irina Kulik, Anna Mapolis, Armen Apresyan, Kirill Alekseev and the performance based on the debut play by the chief editor Russian Art Focus on the second half of May in the second half of May . ..

But one event of the festival stands out. For the whole summer, the Moscow artist Katya Rozhkova populated the main house of Shchepochkin’s estate with her works – a monument of architecture of the 18th century that is being prepared for restoration, which is located on the territory of the Polotnyany Zavod Museum-Reserve, thirty-five kilometers from Kaluga. The linen factory in the heart of every connoisseur of the Russian language is named after Pushkin. His wife grew up there, he himself went there. Art lovers will remember another Natalia Goncharova, an artist of the Russian avant-garde, who is also connected with the Polotnyany plant by blood.Shchepochkin’s house, built by Grigory Shchepochkin, a companion of Afanasy Goncharov, after an amicable division of capital, was in the shadow of its famous neighbor. That must be why he survived all the dramatic trials that a Russian noble estate was entitled to with fewer losses. The house, although it requires serious restoration, is well preserved, in contrast to the main building of the Linen Factory, which burned down under the Germans and was rebuilt in the 70s-90s of the XX century. The fate of these architectural neighbors demonstrates how easily many today agree to a surrogate instead of a genuine one.

Katya Rozhkova is not one of them. She appreciates the real, the natural and the human and hates the plastic world of fakes. She underwent classical academic training, first at the school at the Moscow State Academy of Arts. IN AND. Surikov, and then at the staging department of VGIK, and is not going to forget about it for the sake of the current moment. She can do a lot – draws, prints, shoots, but prefers traditional materials and media. She takes the craft side of art seriously and carefully selects her favorite contemporary artists.

Her track record includes solo exhibitions at the State Museum of the East and the Museum of Architecture. Shchusev in Moscow, in galleries in Tokyo and London; participation in international biennials and triennials of graphics in Ljubljana, Tallinn, Kaliningrad, New York. Her works are kept by Moscow museums and private collectors around the world.

We met with Katya to find out how her previous experience affected the reflection of the amazing historical space, and she told what it is like to carry the key to the old manor house in your pocket for several months, how it works under the guidance of a real sensei, is it possible to reconcile the East and West and conquer metaphysical spaces with a simple pencil.

How did you get so far, Katya?

This is all Anna Senatova. She opened this place to me. I ended up in Kaluga at the previous festival “Tsiolkovsky Fest” with the curatorial project “Personal Space”. It was about a private story, about personal things, dresses, as the most intimate thing to the body and what remains as a keepsake from a grandmother, mother or someone close to you. Nine artists participated in the project with me, and for the first time I was a curator and got a terrible pleasure from the fact that I did not draw anything, but only directed and edited. This project is very dear to me. We still want to drive him around Russia. He will almost certainly be in Tula and Vyborg, in the library of Alvar Aalto. I collected a huge amount of material, and technically it was some kind of horror, because it was the height of a pandemic. I was asked then if this is for everyone, because this is a province and there is a prejudice that people may not understand, one must feel sorry for them. As a result, they were crying, there was some kind of catharsis among the local spectators, and we ceased to be afraid.

And now, for the second time, we “do not spare people”.Although when I started a new project, my relatives, friends asked, and who will go there? And I replied that I did not care at all. I had the feeling that it was simply impossible not to enter this house if it had already been opened to me and simply given the key — I had been walking around with the key to Shchepochkin’s house in my pocket for several months — it was simply impossible. And whoever comes will come.

And I must say, a lot of people gathered for the opening day, and people continue to come from different cities.

The history of the house is so diverse, and you have inhabited it with children.Thirty canvases with tall figures and a polyphonic choir in addition occupied the solemn suite of the second floor. Why children?

I was haunted by the experience of this house. Everything was imprinted on its walls. Every time I got there, I imagined Pirogov operating in one of the rooms on a camp table. He is on his honeymoon and a young wife is assisting him. Represented a tremendous rise in the linen business. I represented an Old Believer who set up a prayer house and a small first school for children there.I imagined a lot of things. And the most vividly I imagined was the school – it existed there for the entire twentieth century, only in 2007, when the house was transferred to the museum, it was closed. I imagined the war years, when the Germans had a stable there, and how, when they left, they planted bombs, but the locals found out about it in time, and how then the school again, and the students warmed themselves by the tiled stoves. And how, after the war, the magnificent ballroom became a sports hall, and the children tried to hit the stucco with the ball.

Populating a former school with children is an obvious gesture, but not at all as benign as it might seem.“You just need a little imagination to imagine how the painted children come to life, go off the canvases and scatter through the rooms, stairs and corridors” – I read in one of the many printed responses to your exhibition and immediately imagined a phantasmagoric crowd clearly not from sweet fairy tale. It seems to me such a film noir … suspense is present in this space. All these bunnies, bulbs, strangely dressed teenagers, choristers opening their mouths. And rustles, and sounds, and songs, and remarks accompanying the exhibition soundtrack, recorded by Sergei Komarov. It’s time to remember Kabakov with his communal issues. What kind of film are you filming here?

It is possible to recall not only Kabakov. Kira Muratova has such a cacophonic effect in her films, when different characters repeat the same phrase at the same time with a time interval. One is superimposed on the other. I think this is a pretty scary movie. Not that I’m such a scarecrow lover, but what could be scarier than our story. Wherever you touch, pain is everywhere. Throughout the entire time.Twentieth century for sure. There is nowhere to touch so much that there is no wound.

And the school itself is also scary. I don’t see romanticism in school. An institution of coercion and non-freedom, like any institution. And humiliation. Of course, there are bright moments associated with teachers, friends, new knowledge, and you are a young, young, child. But the most painful and terrible thing people experience is at this time. For example, I do not want to return to this state, in the “wonderful years”. I went through it all with two daughters later.Already a school of a different time, of a different format. But everything remains the same. Power is in the hands of teachers, a very small tiny leadership and a race for it. All these things.

What kind of movie did I make? I think I have some kind of Zhivagov story. I swung at the epic ( smiles ). The novel lived with me, he generally lives with me. I love him and often return to him mentally.

The most terrible character that struck me in the novel at one time is a girl, the daughter of the heroes, Tanya, who “grew up an orphan without a papi, without a mother.”

I agree. Among my heroines, I also have a special girl, however, there is a slightly different kind of unconsciousness, she is down. She has such a strange look, and she is completely out of this world. But she’s very smart. She does not remember anything, she knows nothing and does not recognize anything. I’ve already gotten a favor for this girl. Everything is so close and everything is intertwined, because recently there was a school here, and I always have the feeling that I have infiltrated somewhere, entered some strange house, and the owners remind me all the time that I am a stranger, that I I have no right. There, almost the entire village, Polotnyany Zavod, are former students and teachers. And they always called the school white, because the house is white. So they gave the name.

One of the former teachers was angry with me that I defame their holy place, because all my children are very scary, very strange, many of them are mentally ill, and even have down. Well, then I explained that times have changed, down is not a sentence, one should not be afraid of this, hesitate, this is a very important social topic. But in the mind of this woman, the school, of course, could not have had anything close to this.

For me, inclusion is not a tribute to fashion or current agenda. I have personal experience, and, of course, I did not want to offend anyone, but many perceive it painfully, it seems to them that it is ugly. And I am sure that beauty is there. We cannot be sure that we fully understand the reactions of people existing outside, we do not know what is accumulated there inside, on a hard disk, that they cannot share. And suddenly some kind of glance, some amazing glimpse hints at the existence of secret knowledge. That’s exactly how it works for me.

Katya, how does the solution to your portraits look technically, which evoke such a warm response.

These are pieces of canvas, cut and attached to the walls without any stretchers. We had to puzzle over how to attach them – you cannot drive in nails in the house, because restoration is planned. The glue, the scotch tape fell off, because everything will fall off, it also has a weight along with the paint. We remembered the stapler. This is the most harmless small entrance, point-to-point, into the plaster of the Soviet period, and there is so much of it that up to the paint layer, and there are painted walls under the plaster, we did not get there and did not damage anything. At the bottom, the canvases are not anchored. I wanted them to rinse, because it reminds me of paint coming off in some places, it hangs in flakes and bends in the same way.

That is, canvases are another, another layer of life in this house, temporary. I was told that this is sloppy, I also need to nail it down from below. And I really like this temporary refuge. I emphasize this. On canvas, my charcoal sketches, sketches. Life-size figures.

Is this all from nature or did you use some additional material?

I drew and worked very closely with the photographer. Ivan Boyko is my real companion.

We filmed children, it is not always possible to draw them at high speed. We went to different places, looked in provincial schools, in the capital, in art schools.Everywhere there are good faces, and everywhere there are not very good ones, if you mean the inner content. Then I also woven there old family photos, and not only my family – there are forties, sixties. Then I painted these figures, turning them into someone else. Such complex layering.

What kind of paint? She looks native on the walls of the house.

Oh, it’s funny and simple. But I resorted to this method for the first time in my life. I really wanted to fit into the local colors as much as possible, like a painter.Such recognizable Soviet colors. And I went to the construction market and by ral ( RAL ) chose the appropriate shades. The paint itself is intended for so-called “interior work”. I just chose all those favorite shades – a couple of red lead, blue, the famous Soviet eternally blue, green shades, than the fences were painted with. I had six colors, six colors. I decided that I would not go beyond them. I used these paint cans, matte water emulsion, essentially the same acrylic. I had worked with wide paint flutes before, I had some, and I tried to generalize the figures as much as possible and work out the faces somewhere.

All this reminded me of creating extras for a movie or theater, because talking about my canvases as portraits and disassembling their portrait qualities, I think, is meaningless, although somewhere I paid attention to faces. It was important for me to designate a person in this space. In this sense, this is the first time I have encountered such a strange job for myself. I was solving a problem for the whole house, and not specifically writing out a portrait, on which you can work for two or three months if you set a similar goal. Somewhere I completely erased my faces, because this is also some kind of oblivion, but my drawing still comes through.

I felt at ease, I studied at VGIK, although I did not work in big cinema. At the moment when I graduated from the institute, ads and music videos were mainly filmed in our country. I worked in this business for some time, but there you realize someone else’s idea, and I wanted independence, I wanted not to depend on anyone, to do what I needed. And I left. And then suddenly I felt that this is it, my movie, and overtook me. And I treated it like a set, a story.I created extras. And the main characters? They can probably still appear there, enter there. And they will certainly be beautiful.

I think you can easily cope with this, because no text about your art is complete without the words “beauty”, “real beauty”, “real beauty”.

And I’m not afraid of this word. Of course, I’m not for cloying, ruffles and so on. But I am a visual person, I perceive with my eyes, and it is important for me that the beauty of the idea matches the beauty of the artistic solution. The example of Boltansky or Chiharu Shiota proves that this is possible. Now the word “beauty” has become as if indecent. Everything modern must be ugly, but why? Absolutely not. As for the Great Beauty, it is all in the past. Sorrentino, for example, explained this to us very well. (Smiles.)

Meditativeness, an appeal to the sphere of the invisible, invisible, existence, which is naturally opposed to the ordinary – the essence of the qualities of your art, many times named and sung. How do you interact with this metaphysics?

I think this is the lot and prerogative of those who write about me, their interest in this area. It is not always possible to jump out of physics and jump into metaphysics, but I want to. Look, my dog jumped through the window and sat down in a chair, easily overcoming the physical barrier, here is an example, beautiful and illustrative. I had such a series of “Plates”. She was born out of communion with the pewter plate that has always lived in the house. Since childhood, I took it in my hands and examined all its scratches and marks.I imagined how they appeared, who made them, with what fork, who ate from this plate, who sat at it.

Plate 4.11. Hardboard, ground, pencil

That is, you wrote a story, a literary plot.

Yes, literature is present, yes, I sin, I sin. Assignment of some stories, animation. It’s always interesting to me. Then I began to draw this plate of a huge size. Why? By the way, why? And because there was a project like “East-West”.This took place in the Small Manezh, and the gallery “Kino”, which then worked on a large scale, arranged everything. I participated in both sections. For the East, I painted plates. I made a lot of plates, it was a whole wall and a lot of work. An effective method of magnification. Take something small, accelerate, change the scale, change the meaning of a thing and its nature. And another increase allows you to become noticeable, because there is such an incredible amount of all art around. I also used it – I increased this small plate to one and a half meters in size. And while I was drawing, it was such a meditative, absolutely amazing process. I did everything with a pencil, and so I hatched everything and hatched and hatched. It was an incredible thrill. I love shading, but here I had to shade so much that the possibilities for the buzz were simply endless. And from this simple shaded and scratched, because there were all sorts of scratching with needles and all sorts of other tricks, these definitions were born about ideal plates of life, metaphysics and so on.

In this immersion in hatching there is meditativeness, and the form itself, the circle, it is ideal, it is absolute, it is like a point, it is like a beginning and an end at the same time. You can write a lot about this, this is a good field for action.

Plate 1. 2001. Hardboard, ground, pencil

And for all kinds of speculation, if we mean abstract, speculative reasoning, as opposed to reasoning about empirical facts.

Of course, but this is even more interesting. For me, these plates were the absolute East, because I know it in such an unhurried old East, not like now. And for a long time I reduced my object of interest to a subject.Just doing, the process itself absorbed me, it was enough for me. Because I love it. How did they say at school – “well, what are you doing?” Yes, stupidity, such is the shop metaphysics, shop space. ( laughs .)

And at that exhibition I presented the West in the form of giant mechanisms.

Bush VI. 2006. Cardboard, silkscreen

And how do you live between East and West? You spent part of your childhood in China, as an adult you interned at a Japanese university and worked in the Maserel printing workshop near Antwerp.

It was a wonderful experience and made me me. He allowed me to see the world in diversity and will learn to appreciate it for it. In one way or another, I have been connected with the East for the rest of my life. It’s another matter that the concepts of East and West are changing now, unfortunately. The wise East, always the wise East, it somehow became stupid for me. I love China. I followed my dad, a diplomat, when I went to first grade, and studied at the embassy school until the fourth. Almost five years. And these are such invaluable childhood sensations.I remember all the smells, I even remember how the Chinese smell – yes, they have their own smell. It all disappeared. I think the West did something irreparable to the East.

I was already an adult in Japan. I romanticized beautiful Japan terribly, but I got there by accident. I was just lucky. This was in the mid-nineties, when Russia finally felt itself to be a part of the larger world. There was an active cultural exchange of everyone and everything. And Japan also took part in this. On the advice of friends, I wrote an essay, almost as a joke, unexpectedly received an invitation to come and studied traditional Japanese painting for a year and a half – rubbing paints, gluing gold and silver to the surface.I had a sensei, a venerable, but rather handsome and not at all exquisite artist. I met with him once a month at his house in Kamakura, this is such a local Peredelkino or Repino, and the rest of the time I spent my big scholarship on traveling around the country. As for the new skills, I didn’t know how to apply this in my work. I did not understand what to extract from there to make it mine.

Bush II. 2001. Canvas, ground, pencil, tempera

What about Japanese calligraphy, which is called one of the sources of your art?

No, I have nothing to take from Japanese calligraphy. It’s such a self-contained story. Sometimes I take paper and just use ink to disperse the energy. I just speed up the ink, because I like the speed and unpredictability of the brush flight. But when in your main business you are, in general, rather neat and meticulous, you sit for a long time over some thing, you sometimes want to run around like this, stretch your muscles. I don’t show this to anyone. Sometimes some designer friend of mine will see this and want to hang it in a modern house, because it is so lively and fast. There is a rhythm. But this is absolutely nothing.

How about anything? Maybe there is nature itself. Is this not an echo of Dadaist and surrealist practices?

Perhaps, but so far it seems to me that I am not saying something. Cy Twombly knows how to say everything with his scribbles. I envy, but I myself will never be so free. I will not succeed, it will always seem to me that I have not communicated something. But I would like, perhaps, some sequel.

Here in Belgium, I just learned a lot for myself. For two years in a row, having won the competition, I worked for a month in a printing workshop near Antwerp. I studied silk screen printing. It was wonderful. Leave everything and work. They are all workaholics. You are on your feet all day, and in order to kick you out of the workshop, the electricity goes out exactly at six. And here is how it stood in paint or emulsion, by touch you choose into the light of day. This is not a hangout residence. It was about work.

Christening shirt. Silk-screen printing on metal. 2010

Where do you print in Moscow?

Now I am engaged in other printing and I am just preparing a folder with large sheets of 100 x 70, I want to make a very small print run.I shot a lot at my exhibition in Shchepochkin’s house, and in these photographs, printed in a certain way, a completely new story emerges, a new drama, both in color and in some subjects that I add. The differences between the living and the inanimate disappear. It is amazing. I am typing in Piranesi LAB with Alexei Veselovsky and really want to finish it.

Such a kind of epilogue. And then it can also be an exhibition.

Yes, I think exhibition things turn out.You just need a reason to understand how and where.

From the White School series of manual prints on paper. 2021

Still, your main tool is a pencil. Large series were made in simple graphite pencil, though not on paper, but on canvas. Where does this practice come from?

I did not open this technique. I have seen a lot of artists who work with pencil on canvas. And I have always loved the pencil. I really like the pencil as a final technique, not as a preparatory technique. But in order to technically withstand this stress of a pencil and my other manipulations, you need a very hard surface – hardboard, or canvas, or plywood. The paper won’t stand it. Something I do on paper, but only light drawings. And the loaded surface is physically supported by the canvas.

And to make it live long, do you do anything?

Of course – I fix the drawing at different levels. Sometimes I need to fix a separate section in order to continue working on it.The graphite is smeared, it is free-flowing, and this powder scatters, so first I spray the spray, and then I can varnish it with a brush. It lasts a long time. True, a lot still depends on the soil. Italian is good, ours turns a little yellow, and this must be taken into account, add paint. The soil itself can also be changed depending on the task. I prepare the base for a long time, I sand it, it turns out like levkas. I need a hard pencil for endurance, for a stroke, and I can work on my ground with a hard pencil – a 10H pencil looks like 5B.

Paradoxical mechanism. 2005. Hardboard, soil, lead pencil

It seems interesting to me when drawing in the classical sense is spoken of as a conceptual framework for other artistic means. Such a drawing allows the artist to act without being distracted by the translation of an impulse, a gesture into technique. How do impulse and technique coexist in your practice?

You have raised an important question for me, because I would dream of freeing myself. I feel a responsibility to a big canvas, to a big thing and to this workmanship, which I really appreciate. And yet I love this impulse, this line. I know how valuable it is when I get it, when I see it in others. And I would like to go to some new level, combine this. To keep this impulse alive in a big job too. I do not let him into big work, I leave him only in irresponsible handwritings. Maybe this is a school, some kind of complexes, but something does not allow me to free myself. All my impulses remain in folders. And if I get down to work, then everything should be brought to the last point.Left to right, top to bottom and every corner. And somehow I feel that I am tired. Even the episode in the White School, when I had little time, and there was a lot to do, gave me liberation. That is why I also think this exhibition is so important to me. She opened something in me, slightly untied my hands.

Favorite items, family memories, old dresses with history, children from the past – how do you like today’s life? How does your muse respond to her? Can escapism save you from burning problems, and what problems are you most concerned about?

It seems to me that escapism today is just a search for reality, not a departure from it. Real reality is strange, theoretical, fantastic. You are looking for support somewhere, you must have solid ground under your feet. You are looking for something alive and real. My children gave me a new theme. They were building something out of Lego, and the ugly pieces always caught my eye, or I stepped on them with my heel, and it hurts wildly. And I began to draw such a series about the scary toys of our children. I want to confront the life of grass, anthill, mushrooms – and plastic unnatural legov construction.

I am concerned about the problems of the sick, or “other” children, where they are, how they live. They can no longer be taken out of sight, as they were once taken away for one night to the island of all disabled people. This is not news today, but I am not chasing fashion, it really worries me. Political topics do not really interest me, and I will definitely not draw anything about it. For me, this is the realm of the poster. I’m talking about something else. I love to dig into something, and even if it is ugly, I will still find my beauty there and make it meaningful.

General questions.

What is your work schedule?

We work on weekdays from 9:00 to 18:00. However, we understand that force majeure does not live according to the schedule and in this case we can work at night, on weekends and with the involvement of additional labor – for a separate surcharge, of course.

How long does it take to calculate the cost of an order?

We calculate the majority of orders without hanging up. If the order is complex and you need to find out the cost of materials or work, then the miscalculation may take 15-20 minutes – in which case we will call you back.

How long does it take to complete an order?

Each product has a standard production time. The timing is due, on the one hand, to the fact that each operation takes a certain time, on the other hand, the order of orders is observed. But we have the ability to manufacture your order in an “accelerated” and “urgent” mode. Naturally for some extra payment.

Is there a delivery of finished products?

Yes. Delivery cost in Kiev is 40 UAH.Standard delivery time is within 1-2 days from the moment the product is ready. If you need delivery immediately when the product is ready, negotiate the cost with the manager.

Design Questions

I already have a layout but would like to make changes to it. Is that possible?

Of course, the main thing is that you have an editable source of this layout (if the layout was not made by you personally, then the source file must be taken from the designer who made the layout).

How to order a product design from you?

It’s very simple – call, write, come in, invite us – tell us what you want.We will listen to you carefully, ask the necessary questions, agree on the price and that’s it, the process has begun. If we are talking about ordering a logo and corporate identity, you already know what you want and you do not need a preliminary consultation – download the brief, fill it out and send it to us – we will contact you ourselves.

What if I do not have the source file for the required layout?

There may be options. You can redraw the layout from the printed sample, scanned image or preview file, in some cases you can make changes to the printed version of the layout. In any case, there is always a way out and we will find it.

I have a bad experience with designers. How can I know that in the case of you, too, I will not be disappointed?

We have long ago relied on the high quality of our work and were not mistaken. One of the pillars of our business is a well-organized design bureau, where only professional designers work under experienced guidance. This allows us to be 100% confident in the quality of our layouts, which you can personally verify with pleasure.

Do you design logos?

Of course, and with great pleasure. You can read more about logo creation here.

I want to order a design from a friend, he recently completed design courses and is working as a freelancer.

In this case, you can expect several problems. Firstly, it is not a fact that you will get a design that is competent in terms of both advertising and aesthetics. Secondly, layouts created by people who are not familiar with printing technologies often look quite different on paper than they looked on a monitor.Third, remember – the Achilles heel of freelancers is timing. Therefore, it is best to entrust the design to professionals and not waste time and money.

My layout was done by a great web designer. Why isn’t it printable?

The point is in the specifics of the prepress requirements. When creating a print file design, there are a number of rules and restrictions that a web designer hardly knows. The end result is a layout that looks good on screen and is completely unprintable. If you want an attractive layout that will be printed with high quality, contact designers who have significant experience in working with printing products.

I want a colorful layout with lots of photos. Where can I get them?

I have a layout, can I print it with you?

Of course. But the layout must meet the following requirements. If the layout does not fit for printing, then you can order from us the service of preparing the layout for printing.

What is CMYK?

In full-color printing, abbreviation of the four primary colors that make up all images.Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black – CMYK. The ratio of colors in the CMYK color model is set as a percentage – from 0 (no color) to 100% (maximum color). 100% mixing of these colors gives black, their absence (= 0% of each) gives white.

What do the numbers 4 + 0, 4 + 1, 4 + 4 mean?

In the printing industry, it is customary to designate the number of printed colors on each side of a sheet of paper in this way. Any color image consists of 4 standard colors – cyan, magenta, yellow, black. The 4 + 0 designation is 4 colors on one (front) side and 0 colors on the back. 4 + 1 is 4 colors on the front and 1 on the back, i.e. full color on one side and one paint on the back. In the case of digital printing, 1 ink is always black. 4 + 4 is full color on both sides, and so on.

Why doesn’t it print as well as it does on my screen?

For the most accurate display of the layout on the screen, several important conditions must be met: a properly calibrated display, the color profile of the device on which the print will be carried out, and certain viewing conditions. If all these conditions are not met, it is impossible to guarantee accurate color reproduction in the layout. Therefore, come to us and you will be able to appreciate the accurately reproducible color, both on our calibrated displays and on printed proof.

Why make a proof?

Production of a color proof is necessary in order to make sure that in the end, after printing the circulation, you get exactly what you expect. Moreover, if you make high demands on the accuracy of hitting the required color tone.

When to use the CMYK color system and when to use RGB? Why is it important to create a layout, initially choosing the correct color space, and not translating the finished layout into it?

The CMYK color model is used in printing because 4 inks are used to reproduce the full color image on the print: cyan, magenta, yellow and black. The RGB color model is used by displays, scanners, cameras. The main differences between these models, from the point of view of preparing the original layout, are the difference in color gamut and the absence of a black component in the RGB system. Therefore, if you initially create a layout in the RGB system, then when recalculating colors in CMYK with a graphic editor, distortion of shades is possible, as well as the appearance of a composite black color, in which there will be impurities of other paints, which can adversely affect the print quality, especially thin lines and small text.

What is dpi?

An abbreviation for dots per inch (literally – dots per inch), a unit of measure for the number of dots per linear inch. Dpi measures the resolution of an image. For example, 300 dpi means that the resolution of this image is 300 dpi. The higher this indicator, the better the image quality. For printing products, it is recommended to use images with a resolution of at least 300 dpi.

What is coated paper?

This is paper on which a chalk layer is applied, which gives the paper a high smoothness and whiteness. Glossy magazines are usually published on this kind of paper, because it provides brightness and brilliance to the image.

What is design board?

Unlike standard white cardboard, designer cardboard amazes with a variety of colors, textures and densities.Orange or iridescent blue-green, with a linen or leather structure, ultra-glossy or velvety matte – using designer cardboard as a starting material allows you to get more unusual and memorable printed products. Business cards, postcards, invitations, exclusive packaging and other premium products are often printed on designer cardboard. The downside of design cardboard is that not all of its types are printed with high quality on a digital printing machine, in which case you need to order screen printing.

Why is it not recommended to use pantone colors in digital layouts?

When using pantone color, you need to understand that it will be converted by the computer system of the printing press into percentages of the CMYK color system. In this case, it becomes impossible to guarantee an accurate hit, and the same color can be reproduced in different ways on different types of equipment. Therefore, it is necessary to transfer all pantone colors to the CMYK system yourself using a graphic editor and correct possible discrepancies in color tone.

What is the recommended paper weight for different products?

There are no rigid standards, there are only a number of recommendations. So, for example, for booklets, paper with a weight of 130 to 170 g / m2 is recommended. For business cards and pocket calendars – from 250 to 300 g / m2. For large-format printing of photographic images – from 180 g / m2 and denser, for drawings – from 80 g / m2. If you do not know or are not sure what paper is needed for your work, then you can call and consult our managers.

What is a pantone and why should I watch a pantone fan?

Pantone color model is a color matching system developed by the American company Pantone Inc and used by printing houses all over the world. Each color in this system has its own number, all reference colors are printed on paper and bonded together, forming a pantone fan. The choice of a pantone is carried out mainly during the development of the logo and corporate identity of the company – for example, the red-blue logo is described by two numbers of the pantones, and when printing with a stencil or offset method, it always turns out to be the same. The digital printing method cannot accurately reproduce the pantone, although it is almost always possible to choose the color that is as close to the original pantone as possible.

I have a tiff / psd layout. Can you print stencil business cards from it and make an embossing?

No. Layouts for screen printing, as well as for creating clichés for embossing, must be made in vector format, taking into account the necessary requirements. If necessary, we can render your layout in a vector editor.

We made a layout in Word \ Paint \ Publisher. Is it good for print?

No, it won’t do. Files made in these programs do not meet our technical requirements and require additional processing.

Why is digital printing not recommended for complex gradients?

Digital printing, like any other technological process, has its own errors and disadvantages. Recreating a smooth transition from one color to another by a printing press may not always coincide with what you can observe on your monitor. For example, a mismatch between the contrast levels of the monitor and the press might be the cause.

Why is digital printing not recommended for printing large areas with a solid color?

On a large area with a uniform fill, any defects that may arise for various reasons are very clearly visible: due to uneven distribution of toner (powder) in the printing machine, or due to the ingress of dust particles on the paper.

Why shouldn’t digital printing print very dark shades?

Layout elements with very dark fillings can be indistinguishable from black on the print. It must be remembered that the screen is backlit and dark colors are perceived brighter than they would be on paper. The color on the printed material is formed by overlaying 4 colors and at high concentration it is highly likely that it will be perceived by the eye as black.

Why are departures needed?

Overhangs are needed to compensate for cutting errors. Otherwise, without bleeding the image, after cutting or die-cutting, you may end up with some sheets in a stack with a part of the unprinted area.

Why is the color patch uneven on my linen business cards?

Electro transfer technology used in digital printing is very sensitive to irregularities in the papers being printed on. Textured paper (for example, “under linen”) is heterogeneous in its structure, the charge passes through it unevenly, hence some distortion of the fill. On text, lines, and small objects, these distortions are less noticeable, but a colored solid allows you to notice unevenness.

Why margins (border padding to text / image)?

The smaller the margin, the more visible the asymmetry, which can occur due to errors in printing, folding (creasing) and cutting.Plus, small margins create visual tension and make the layout look overwhelmed and sloppy.

Why convert fonts to curves?

Converting fonts to curves is necessary in order for the text to look identical on any computer, even if the system does not have the font used in the layout. If you do not translate the fonts into curves, then when you open the layout on other computers, it is possible to replace the missing fonts with others that do not match the original layout.

Why give invisible outline to layout size?

By giving an invisible outline to the size of the layout, you show the size of the printed product after trimming, as well as the dimensions of the overhangs (the area overflowing).

Quality, many clients who came to us previously printed business cards on paper in other printing houses, and they were not satisfied with the quality, such business cards are easy to bend, wrinkle, quickly get dirty, cut to bend, and therefore many immediately ask what quality do you have?

On offset equipment, you can print on both 300 paper and 300 cardboard, what is the difference?

How can you compare business cards if you understand them?

For a rough comparison, you can take a sheet of the Snow Maiden A4, fold it 3 times, something like this looks like a business card printed on paper of this thickness.

If we consider offset printing of business cards and printing on cardboard, then you can take the paper cover of a book, notebook or notepad, only in this case 250 cardboard is usually used, and try to bend it, this is how business cards printed on cardboard look like, just a little thicker since we use 300 -350 cardboard.

Due to the high quality of our business cards, many who first came to us have become our partners for many years!

Why do many printing houses choose paper for printing, the fact is that in our time, in the conditions of the so-called crisis, manufacturers have greatly raised the prices for cardboard, it is brought in Europe, and related products, too, have become more expensive, and in order not to raise prices, printing houses chose the easiest way to print, on paper, it is several times cheaper, but quality was left aside. We also had such a question, to switch to paper, and we also took such a step to find out if our clients were ready to print cheaper and close their eyes to quality, but all our clients immediately saw the difference and started calling the office, from returning the print to cardboard. As a result, we vented cardboard, and saved the quality for our customers, since the main thing for us is that our customers are satisfied, and we try to create all the conditions for fruitful collaboration for a long time! Our main task is high quality products and service, fast terms and efficiency, reasonable prices so that any company can order products from us, and at the same time the advertising budget is rational and economical.
