Finally, The Perfect Insulated Water Bottle Or Coffee Cup For You

A technological breakthrough – plus great design – equals your perfect bottles.

Purist Collective

I am a big fan of reusable vessels of all kinds – after all, the mantra Reduce, Reuse, Recycle is intentionally in that particular order because of the importance of each “R.” As much as you hear about the importance of recycling – and it is important – reusable bottles, cups and glasses are better than recyclable ones in terms of sustainability and the environment.

But they also work much better, especially since the double walled vacuum revolution. These modern designs trap air – the best insulator – and can keep beverages hot or cold for incredibly long amounts of time. I often fill a double-walled water bottle with cold water for a hike or outdoor pursuit, come back with it unfinished, and find the water still delightfully cold the next day. They also don’t sweat, a bonus for tossing in your backpack or gym bag, or just sitting on your desk.

For this reason, I have amassed a lot of models. I love the beauty of S’well water bottle designs, and I’ve had great long term heating and cooling results with models from the other top-name makers I really like: Hydroflask, Kleen Kanteen,  Camelbak and YETI – who also makes my favorite indestructible double-walled dog bowls.

This 18-oz. Mover bottle with flip-up lid is the perfect coffee or tea on the go solution.

Purist Collective

But while all of these stainless steel double walled vacuum bottles and cups work great at insulating, they don’t always work so well at staying clean. “Stainless” steel is not, and after regularly using high-stain beverages like coffee and tea, it seems impossible to keep interiors shiny and new. My husband uses his favorite double walled mug every day for coffee, and no amount of scrubbing and soap keeps it from turning permanently brownish. After a recent camping trip, it took me repeated washings with soap to get the smell of bourbon out of a modern stainless steel vacuum bottle.

One other issue with these vessels is that after washing and rinsing they take a really long time to dry, and I don’t want to cap them and put them away wet, so they often sit in the drain rack for up to two full days just to get rid of the last drops.

That’s why I have been so impressed with the newest sustainable beverage technology, from California-based Purist Collective. Purist makes glass-lined stainless steel vacuum bottles and cups, but this is not your grandfather’s glass-lined thermos. Purist’s technology transforms silicon dioxide, a readily abundant element, into an ultra-smooth interior glass finish just 60 nanometers thick. For those of you like me who had to look up nanometers, that is much thinner than a human hair. This imperceptible layer provides all the benefits of typical glass, but thanks to its ultra-thin nature, won’t crack or break, even when dropped. The invisible glass barrier between your beverage of choice and the steel is completely smooth and makes for better taste and easier cleaning. There’s no leftover flavor and no metallic tang. There is a reason why we drink wine of out of glass and not metal at home.

All the Purist lids have handy flip up handles that are inset flush when not in use.

Purist Collective

The company claims the glass process lasts the lifetime of the bottle, and “because the interior glass finish essentially becomes part of the bottle, it won’t delaminate, chip, or peel off.” The exterior wall is durable 304 stainless steel, the inner one surgical-grade, 316 stainless steel, and the bottles keep drinks hot for 12 hours and cold for 24.

We’ve been using the Mover 18-ounce model with the Union top as a coffee thermos and cup in one for the car, and it has proven extremely easy to clean, leaving no trace of the beverage behind even after daily use. As a side bonus, the Purist stuff also air dries much faster than similarly shaped competitors. That solves both my problems, but on top of that the design is really functional. The Mover is the perfect size for coffee junkie who like multiple cups but is still slim enough to fit any cupholder, comfy in the hand, and the top offers the perfect combination of total closure to keep drinks warm (or cold) and a big enough hole to drink through without burning your mouth. Many other lids are either cup tops that snap on and are not nearly as secure, cool the drink too fast or have tiny openings. The Union is a screw on tightly locking cap that combines leak proof security with flip open drink access. The alternative Element top has no opening and is insulated. Both have a very handy pop up metal handle that makes for easy carrying but it is totally flush in the lid when not in use. From top to bottom, inside and out, the Purist collection is sleek and works great.

The product line is just three size bottles and two types of screw on caps (a third is coming in October), all interchangeable. The 10-ounce Maker is basically a glass for keeping your beer or cocktail cold or coffee refill hot, the Mover more of a thermos that drinks like a cup, and the Founder a full quart bottle for taking to the gym or hiking or whenever you need 32-ounces of water. All are available in six colors.

15 Best Water Bottles to Buy in 2021

Getty Images

By now you know the importance of drinking enough water but it’s often easier said than done. A simple solution? Investing in a reusable water bottle that you can refill throughout the day. Carrying one around with you will make you more likely to drink up, plus, the benefits for the environment (and your wallet!) make the one-time purchase worth it.

In the Good Housekeeping Institute, we test water bottles on performance evaluations like resistance of leaking and spilling; durability evaluations to determine the bottle’s ability to resist breaking when dropped from sipping height using our Drop Tester machine; and ease evaluations to determine the ease of opening and closing the bottle, comfort of drinking from the bottle, and ease of cleaning. We also send bottles home with consumer testers who provide feedback on each bottle’s ability to resist leaking and spilling and overall satisfaction. After testing 25 bottles and parsing through nearly 200 data points, we found the best reusable water bottles in every material and for every activity.

The below picks (or similar models) are either top-tested picks from Lab and consumer testing or road-tested favorites of our experts and editors. Here are the best water bottles to buy:

Our editors love the “measurement markings on the side so you know how much you’re drinking through the day.” This pick is made of 50% recycled material for bonus sustainability points. Plus, it’s dishwasher-safe and the colors stay bright even after many washes.

Made of durable, dishwasher-safe plastic, at 25 ounces, it’s the perfect size for most people to tote along all day — and it fits in most cupholders. Hitch is a reusable water bottle and coffee cup in one

Coffee is a popular start to the day for millions of people. There’s nothing quite like the scent of coffee wafting through the air and that first sip to get you started on the right foot. But an estimated 3 billion paper cups end up in the landfills each year — cups that mostly can’t be recycled due to the mixed materials, including plastic. The solution, of course, is reusable coffee cups; however, many people have struggled to incorporate that addition into the host of other items that travel with them daily. So Remaker Labs, a Santa Barbara-based company, has carefully designed a to-go cup that you won’t even notice you’re carrying.

As co-founder Sky Gilbar explained, “The essence of the problem is that people already carry so much — water bottle, phone, chargers, laptops, and other essentials — that their hands and bags are full, so carrying a reusable cup all day on top of all that is just too inconvenient.”

Related: This aluminum water bottle is a reusable alternative to single-use plastic

Hitch, the first product launched on Kickstarter by Sky Gilbar and David Silverander, is a full-sized, fully insulated and leak-proof 12-ounce cup that fits inside a water bottle — similar to the one you likely already carry, making it easy to bring along your reusable cup without making the choice between that and a water bottle. While your cup “Hitch(es)” a ride inside your 18-ounce insulated stainless steel water bottle, it easily slides out for use. The lid for the water bottle is separate and there is also a leak-proof lid for your cup. Plus, you can lock the cup on top of the water bottle for easy one-hand carries. The dual-cup design also fits into most standard cup holders.

The 5 Best Insulated Water Bottles (2021) to Keep Your Water Cold and Your Coffee Hot

The best part about summer 2021 has been taking my laptop to the roof and basking in the sun while I get some work done. The worst part has been witnessing the bottle of water beside me go from ice cold to lukewarm in 20 minutes flat. And listen, summer is my favorite season, so I’m completely willing to accept its pros—long days, great hair, block parties—along with its cons—sticky everything, the Mr. Softee jingle, the smell of hot trash. But drinking lukewarm water in 90 degree heat (with 80 percent humidity) is something I will no longer voluntarily do. I need an insulated water bottle that will keep my drink cold for the long haul.

Thankfully, my colleagues at BA tested the best insulated water bottles for keeping cold bevs cold—even on the hottest days of summer. And since insulation cuts both ways, they also tested each bottle’s ability to keep hot beverages hot, too. Because, no doubt, as soon as winter rolls around, I’ll be griping about how quickly my coffee goes from hot to tepid. (A word to the wise: If you’re going to use the same insulated bottle for water and coffee, make sure to clean it properly or you’ll be drinking dank coffee water forever.)

The Candidates

We polled the Bon Appétit staff on the insulated water bottles they love most, from the aesthetically pleasing Jolly Rancher–colored options on display at spin class to the utilitarian models ready to be strapped to a backpack with a carabiner.

The Testing

Most companies claim that their insulated bottles keep water cold for 24 hours and hot for 12. We started our tests with water that was either iced—four cubes per bottle—or boiling hot and then measured the temperature every few hours with a trusty, super accurate Thermapen thermometer. Which contenders rose to the top? To find the best insulated water bottle for you, peep the results below.

8 Best Smart Water Bottles of 2021

Photos Courtesy of Retailers

Hydration is the key to success. No, really, we’re serious here. Water is what gives us life. And beyond that, proper hydration levels keep our bodies functioning properly, our skin glowing, and our energy up all day long. But as simple as it sounds, remembering to drink enough water in a day has somehow become a challenging task. Lucky for us, there are tons of products on the market to make this simple chore far more enjoyable, sort of like a fun drinking game sans the alcohol buzz.

Smart water bottles come in all shapes, sizes, materials, and technologies these days. You’ll hear of water bottles with a plethora of features, but sometimes all the bells and whistles don’t quite fit your lifestyle. And sometimes, all you need is a little motivation to drink up. From collapsible options that save on space, to self-cleaning technology you occasionally have to hand wash, and even Bluetooth-connected smart water bottles that track how much you drink (welcome to the future), at the end of the day, a water bottle will have done its job if it makes you want to drink out of it.

While tech-savvy wellness enthusiasts might love a tracking device that syncs to their health app, others may find the idea of connectivity in a water bottle silly. Before you jump to conclusions, hear us out. And remember, not all smart water bottles are battery powered. Whichever style you prefer, remember a smart water bottle is really just a drinking vessel intelligently designed to solve a problem.

We created this guide to help you find the right water bottle that fits seamlessly into your days and your budget, so you can be a happy, healthier and hydrated human. Check out the 8 best smart water bottles of 2021, tested by the team at Men’s Health, and decide if a smart water bottle is actually worth it, to you. While some tech options fall at a higher price point, remember than nothing is more important than staying hydrated.

Best Smart Water Bottle Overall

Hidrate Spark 3

The Hidrate Spark was one of the first smart connected water bottles on the market. The brand has advanced their original design to a third generation, eliminating ticks from previous models. This baby tracks your water intake and literally illuminates to remind you to drink up. It syncs via Bluetooth to the Hidrate app, Fitbit, Apple Health, and more. (It’s even worthy enough to be sold at the Apple Store).

The advanced technology calculates and adjusts personal hydration goals based on your body and activity level. It has smart sensors that record how much you drink, instantly syncing it to your phone for that #connectedlife.

One of our favorite (yet not entirely important) features comes from location tracking. Just like “find my iPhone” you can “find my water bottle” and never lose it again. The lid is dishwasher safe, while the body and sensor are hand washable. One single charge lasts up to four months. This water bottle has it all. Soon your body will be trained to sip more often throughout the day making the $60 ticket well worth it.

Most Versatile Smart Water Bottle

Ozmo Smart Cup

ozmo amazon.com

So, the Ozmo doesn’t look like your typical water bottle. It appears as a coffee cup with a lid, which isn’t necessarily wrong. The Ozmo Smart Cup, in fact, is made for activity. It can carry any type of liquid, sealed with intelligence through sensing both water and coffee, with the ability to manually input other beverages. Ozmo gets to know your body through a few key metrics and recommends exactly how much water you should be drinking each day, while also limiting your coffee consumption.

The flashing LED lights communicate both achievement and are a reminder to take a sip or two to meet your hydration goals. You can customize your plan through the Oszmo app and sync it with Fitbit, Apple Watch, Garmin, and other fitness trackers to have your wellness tracking live in one place. You’ll get interactive reports to monitor your hydration over the course of a year for the super committed. An added bonus is the charging station, which keeps hot liquids warm at your desk.

Best Self-Cleaning Smart Water Bottle

LARQ Bottle

The LARQ bottle doesn’t track your hydration through an app, but it is smart in the way it prepares your it for drinking. LARQ utilizes UV-C light technology to clean out bacteria that sticks around in between washes. Through the pandemic, UV-C light sanitization systems have been on the rise because of how efficient they are. This bottle sanitizes the entire inside, which can sometimes be a tricky task, even when hand scrubbing.

All you have to do is push a button for a 60-second light bath. And when it realizes you aren’t using it regularly, it self-cleans every two hours for the purest possible water. The double insulation version is a bit heavy, but it will keep your liquids hot or cold for an entire day. If you’re looking for a lighter option without the insulation, opt for the LARQ Movement. Clean freaks, you’re going to love this.

Best Smart Water Bottle for Travel

Monos Kiyo UVC Bottle

With a simple wave of a finger (insert Harry Potter reference here), the UVC technology in the Monos’ Kiyo UVC water bottle purifies drinking water inside, eradicating up to 99.99% of bacteria. That means you can fill up your water bottle from the faucet, lake, river, or refrigerator and rest assured that what you’re drinking is clean.

If you’re really thirsty, you can swipe once for a quick clean mode (60 seconds) or wait three minutes on deep clean mode by swiping twice. The soft design doesn’t look as high tech as it is, taking inspiration from classic artisan pottery.

It charges via USBC-C in just 3 hours for 30 days of normal use. It’s a great portable option that fits in a purse, backpack, or carry-on, while remaining easy to carry and impressive on style. You can’t track your hydration levels, so this is a great option for someone that isn’t always connected, but always on the go.

Best Smart Water Bottle for the Outdoors

Thermos Hydration Bottle with Connected Smart Lid

Thermos isn’t new to the hydration game, but the classic reusable water bottle brand has now stepped into the tech space. They recently launched a smart lid and phone app that senses your water intake and tracks your progress via Bluetooth. The sensor tube reads the volume and temperature of your liquid and tracks it over time.

It is intelligently designed to act as your real time hydration coach with push notifications throughout the day. The tube measures your bottle’s current fill level. While some other smart water bottles on this list can be heavier in weight, require time and patience to learn, and feel like a fragile piece of tech, the Thermos Smart Lid is does not. It’s your basic old outdoor-friendly water bottle, now with a tracking feature.

Icewater 3-in-1 Smart Water Bottle

amazon.com

The Icewater 3-in-1 smart water bottle makes the list as our favorite Bluetooth-enabled speaker. It’s not something entirely necessary, and it doesn’t track your hydration levels, but it’s a fun way to always remember your water bottle for a day’s outing, because if you don’t, you’ll be without music, too. And the base in this tiny speaker exceeded some pretty low expectations.

While there’s no true pattern to its glowing method, the illumination is supposed to remind you to drink up. The tech isn’t as advanced as some of the others on this list, but if you’re looking for an affordable, music-enabled option for summer, this is your guy.

Healthiest Smart Water Bottle

Level Up Way Glass Hydrogen Generator

Wellness junkies are probably aware of the potential benefits to the hydrogen water hype. Essentially, hydrogen water is regular water with gas that may have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Some researchers say it slows down the process of aging, has better mineral absorption and improves muscle recovery after a workout. While current research is limited, those aiming to stay on top of the latest health trends (and boast about it) will love the potential benefits of this hydrogen-forming smart water bottle.

The Level Up Way glass bottle lets you turn any water into hydrogen water through something called SPE PEM technology.  At the press of a button, and a little patience (6 minutes to be exact), this smart bottle ionizes your water making it more bioavailable, introducing molecular hydrogen. Hydrogen water can be expensive, so this one-time purchase is worth your hard-earned money, if you can commit to it.

Best Non-Tech Smart Water Bottle

Giotto Large Motivational

This water bottle has zero tech features, but it’s smart in how it motivates you to drink up throughout the day. You might laugh or think it’s cheesy, but these little reminders actually work and train your brain to look forward to these tiny milestones.

If you’re staring at a plain cup, you are much less likely to take a sip and refill than you are to hit the goals listed on this jug. If a $20 water jug can up your hydration levels, take that as a major win.

LoadingSomething is loading.

It’s easy to think items you see everywhere — all over your friend’s feeds, in people’s hands on the subways and in airports, on pretty much any hike you go on, anywhere — are overrated. But we’re here to tell you Hydro Flask lives up to the hype.

Vacuum-insulted, cold-retaining water bottles are a dime a dozen these days, but Hydro Flask was one of the first companies to bring this tech to a mainstream audience — and it’s still one of the brands doing it best. The brand has now expanded to offer far more than just water bottles: wine glasses, food storage, sippy cups for kids, all made from stainless steel with double-wall, vacuum-insulated TempShield tech that keeps its contents hot when you want it to be hot and cold when you want it to be cold. The brand has also expanded into soft coolers and backpack coolers, of which we’re huge fans.

Hydro Flask

Founded in Bend, Oregon in 2009, Hydro Flask has accomplished the massive task of making customers care more about their reusable water bottles than their phones or keys, with no secret tricks or gimmicks.

People love Hydro Flask’s products because they’re effective, durable, and convenient to use. They’re designed for active lifestyles, but that doesn’t mean you have to be an avid hiker or camper to enjoy them. Any time you’re moving — whether by foot, plane, bike, or canoe — you’ll find a use for a Hydro Flask product.

There are two things that really set Hydro Flask apart from its competitors: For one, every product comes in incredibly appealing colorways. The latter may sound trivial, but think about often you’ve looked at a Hydro Flask and felt delighted over its spot-on color offerings, from periwinkle to this season’s pale yellow. This is because the brand actually has an entire position dedicated to color trend predictions.

The second thing that really sets HF apart is its thoughtful, ergonomic designs. The wall of the water bottle mouths or cup lips are the perfect thickness to not feel bulky when you drink out of them; the handles on the water bottles are a structured-but-soft silicone for comfortable carrying on a multi-hour hike; the water bottles are perfectly weighted to not tip over but also not be too heavy to hike with.

Hydro Flask/Facebook

Hydro Flask bottles, cups, and mugs are available in a variety of colors, including limited-edition collections, and they’re also customizable, with over 180,000 possible combinations.

In case your bottle starts leaking or the insulation becomes compromised, don’t worry: The company offers a lifetime warranty on all its products (except the cooler bags and bottle slings, which have five-year warranties).

The one hold-up for most people on investing in a Hydro Flask, or really any vacuum-insulated drinkwear, is the price. But we’ll vouch for HF products being worth spending a little extra, especially when you consider their versatile use, long life span, and superior quality.

If you need help deciding which Hydro Flask to get, we’re all too familiar with its bottles and other drinkware, from the classic 21-ounce Standard Mouth bottle to the 12-ounce Cooler Cup that doubles as a beer koozie. You can find our favorite Hydro Flask products below.

Here are the 13 best Hydro Flask bottles and products we swear by:

Why can’t you drink water straight from the neck of the bottle?

We all try to drink more water. Therefore, we always take a bottle for a walk or pour a glass of water and carry it with us to the bedroom, so as not to forget to drink right away in the morning. At the same time, no one thinks about whether it is safe. So, is it okay to drink water that has stood overnight or has been left in the car for several days? It is likely that you have come across the fact that taking an ordinary bottle of water that was in the bag, for example, from the last workout in the gym, and having sipped a little, you felt the changes that happened to it. Or drinking water from a cup that stood all day on the far shelf, you too were confused by its taste. The main reason for this is carbon dioxide. When you leave a glass of water for 12 hours, the carbon dioxide in the air begins to mix with it. This lowers the pH of the water and gives it an unpleasant taste. But do not think that this has made the water undrinkable. Experts assure that ordinary tap water is safe to drink for six months. However, after 6 months, the chlorine in the water dissipates to such an extent that bacteria and algae begin to germinate in it. The bacteria will grow faster if the water is kept warm.
Water in a glass
In addition, it is better not to drink water that has been in an open container for a long time. You should avoid drinking drinking water that has been left open for a long time. Even overnight, it can become unsafe to drink because you have no idea how much bacteria, dust, debris and other microscopic particles could get into it.
Bottled water
Do not drink water that has been left in the bottle for a long time, especially if you drank straight from the bottleneck.Dead skin, dust and sweat remain on the inside of the bottle, covering the human skin, which over time mixes with water. In addition, your saliva that gets into the water can harbor bacteria. If you leave the bottle you drank with for a long time, bacteria will begin to multiply in the water. Therefore, its use can result in health problems. It is equally dangerous to share water with another person, since it is not known whether he is a carrier of dangerous infections.
Water in the car
It is better not to drink water that you have forgotten in the car for the whole day. Because heated water under the sun’s rays promotes the growth of bacteria. In addition, bottles are made from a material that, when heated, can release hazardous chemicals and mix with water.

Do you have objects at home, the purpose of which only a select few know? What are these things?

About the urostome | Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

This information will help you learn about the urostomy and urostomy urinary system.

to come back to the beginning

About urostome

An urostomy is an opening in the abdomen (abdomen) through which urine exits the body. After bladder surgery to form a urostomy (iliac canal), urine will flow from the kidneys into the ureters and then into the iliac canal and out through a small opening in the abdomen called a stoma (see Figure 1).

Figure 1. Urinary system after bladder surgery with the formation of a urostomy (iliac canal)

The stoma should always be deep pink or red.If your stoma is gray, brown, or black, see your doctor right away.

You will not be able to control the flow of urine from your stoma. You will put an urostomy bag (device) on your stoma to collect and hold urine.

There are several different types of neoplasms. The WOC nurse will tell you which ostomy you will have and answer your questions.

to come back to the beginning

About the urostomy urinary collection system

The urostomy urinary collection system consists of 2 parts: an adhesive plate (which adheres to the skin) and an ostomy bag (a bag that holds urine). In a two-piece urine collection system, the glue plate and the ostomy bag are separate components that can be detached from each other. In a one-piece system, the adhesive plate and the ostomy bag are connected.

You will use different types of urine collection systems in the hospital and at home. This is because the stoma will shrink as it heals. The final size of the stoma usually takes 6–8 weeks.

Hospital

While you are in the hospital, you will be taught how to care for your urostomy and urinary system.

In the hospital, most patients use a two-piece urine collection system with an extension called a low pressure adapter. This adapter fits between the adhesive pad and the ostomy bag, creating additional space. It makes it easier for doctors and nurses / nurses to detach the pouch from the adhesive plate and put it back in without putting too much pressure on your abdomen. It also makes you feel more comfortable when the doctor examines your stoma.

Houses

After you leave the hospital, you will be using either a two-piece or one-piece urine collection system. Your home care nurse will come to you to teach you how to care for your ostomy and urinary system.

As the tissue heals and the stoma shrinks, you can use a variety of urine collection systems. You will be seen by the outpatient WOC nurse. Your nurse will look at your stoma with you, track its healing, and help you choose the most appropriate urine collection systems and accessories for your ostomy care (products that you will use with your urine collection system).

Follow-up
After you are discharged from the hospital, contact your doctor’s office if you need to talk to your WOC nurse.

If the WTO nurse is not available when you contact, the office will forward your message and you will be contacted later.

Your first appointment with a WOC nurse will take place 2 weeks after you leave the hospital. It will not be superfluous to go to the outpatient ward nurse for an examination 2-3 months and 6 months after surgery. The WOC nurse should also be consulted if you have skin problems or questions about your urinary tract.

During the first few days after the operation, you may lose some weight. You will most likely regain some of your weight loss 3–6 months after surgery. During this period, you may notice slight changes in the shape of the abdomen. These changes can alter the fit of your urinary system, making you feel uncomfortable. If this happens, see your WOC nurse. You may be advised to have a more flexible urine collection system that follows your body movements.

It is also advisable to choose a more flexible urine collection system if you are uncomfortable with yours to bend, twist, or exercise. The WOC nurse will help you find the system that works best for your body and activity.

If you have questions or concerns, or to schedule an appointment with your WOC nurse, always contact your doctor’s office.

Placement of the urine collection system

Position the ostomy bag so that it faces downward so that it can be tucked into pants or underwear. You can also fold it if you like. You can also purchase specialty underwear or camouflage belts, such as those available at www.ostomysecrets.com or www.steathbelt.com.

Wearing a belt or suspenders

You can wear a belt or suspenders on your pants with your urine collection system. If you prefer a belt, wear it over or under your stoma. Wearing it directly on your stoma can cause irritation, bleeding, or excessive tissue overgrowth.

Prepare spare kit

Prepare a small spare kit containing a pre-cut glue pad, an ostomy bag, and a few gauze pads.Always carry a spare kit with you so that you can change your ostomy bag in the event of a leak.

Do not expose replacement kit to direct sunlight and keep it away from heat sources.

Ordering accessories

Ostomy care companies

There are 2 main types of companies supplying ostomy products.

  • Distributors of Ostomy Products are companies that sell ostomy products. They sell products from various manufacturers. You will order urostomy care supplies from your ostomy product distributor.
  • Ostomy product manufacturers are companies that manufacture ostomy products. You can call an ostomy product manufacturer for product information or ask them to provide samples of their products. You cannot purchase products directly from the manufacturer.
When to Order Accessories

Order accessories when you only have 1 pack of urine bags or adhesive strips. You can place an order from one of the following ostomy product distributors:

Select an ostomy care distributor that accepts your health insurance. You can find out by calling your distributor.

Accessories for Ostomy Care

There are many different accessories for ostomy care. Here are some examples:

  • Back-up ring : Placed around the base of the stoma to provide better adhesion to the adhesive. It prevents urine from leaking from under the adhesive plate.
  • Elastic Protective Plates : Placed over the adhesive plate to prevent it from peeling off the skin. They also help to seal the adhesive backing.
  • Stoma belt : Attaches to the adhesive plate and wraps around the waist. It helps to anchor the urinary system.
  • Protective Pad : Placed over the stoma and urine collection system to provide better protection. May be useful if you are involved in contact sports.

You may not need to use all of these accessories. The WOC nurse will give you detailed information about the accessories that may be most useful for you.

Night bag

The night bag is a bag or bottle that connects to the bottom of the ostomy bag.It holds more urine than a regular ostomy bag.

It is important to use a night bag while sleeping to avoid overfilling the ostomy bag. If the pouch is full, it may leak, or urine from the pouch may leak back into the stoma and cause an infection. Using a night bag can also save you the trouble of getting up at night to empty your pouch.

You will need to use an adapter to connect the night bag to the ostomy bag. This adapter is included in each pack of ostomy bags.

Maintenance of the night bag

Empty the bag or bottle of the night bag into the toilet every morning. After emptying the bag or bottle, rinse the night bag. You can do this with warm water or with a mixture of ¼ cup white vinegar and 1 cup water. You can also purchase cleansers such as the M9 Crystallizer. After rinsing the night bag, let it dry.

Change your night bag every 2–4 weeks.

If you are having problems with the tube of your night bag loose, you can tape it on between the night bag and your ostomy bag. If you sleep restlessly, use a foot stabilizer or Foley catheter retainer ® . You can include these accessories in your basic order.

Wearable leg bag

A wearable leg bag is a bag that holds more urine than a regular ostomy bag.It is recommended that you use a leg bag when traveling or when you cannot go to the toilet to empty your ostomy bag (for example, when playing golf or in a traffic jam).

Wearable leg drainage bags may not be covered by your health insurance. You can call your ostomy distributor to see if your health insurance covers the cost of purchasing a wearable leg drainage bag.

Caring for the wearable leg bag

When the bag is full, drain the urine from the leg bag into the toilet. After emptying the bag, rinse it. You can do this with warm water or with a mixture of ¼ cup white vinegar and 1 cup water. You can also purchase cleansers such as the M9 Crystallizer. After rinsing the leg bag, let it dry.

Change the leg bag every week, no matter how many times you use it.

New Product Introduction

You can inquire about new products by asking your WOC nurse, calling ostomy product manufacturers and asking them to provide samples of new products, or browsing the internet for an urostomy product. If you go to a manufacturer of ostomy care products or search for information on the Internet, make sure you are looking at urostomy care products and not colostomy bags.

You can also learn about new products by participating in a thematic online chat or local support group for people with disabilities. Oftentimes, other people facing the same problems are aware of products that can meet your needs. Check out the list of online support groups and websites in the Resources section of this resource to find the right local support group for you. Always check with your WOC nurse before using new urostomy care products.

to come back to the beginning

Change of urostomy urinary collection system

You should change your urine collection system approximately every 3-4 days. If urine leaks, change your urine collection system immediately. It is best to change your urinary system in the morning before you drink any fluids. Usually, less urine flows out of the stoma in the morning.

The first few times you will change your urine collection system while lying on a bed in a hospital room. As you recover, you can change your urine collection system where it is most convenient for you. Many people prefer to do this in the bathroom, standing in front of the mirror. You can also make it a rule to remove your urine collection system and clean the area around your stoma when you shower.

For more information on changing your urine collection system, read the resource Changing Your Urostomy Urinary System at Home.

What to do if you notice blood on your stoma

The stoma contains a large number of blood vessels and can easily begin to bleed. It is normal to have a small amount of blood on the gauze or tissue while cleaning the stoma. The flow of blood should stop on its own within a few minutes. If you are taking blood thinners or aspirin, bleeding may occur more frequently and last longer. Press down on the stoma to stop bleeding more quickly.

If bleeding does not stop after 10-15 minutes, call your doctor. You may need to go to the MSK Emergency Center or the nearest emergency room.Your doctor will tell you what to do.

Call your doctor right away if blood is in your urine or leaking from your stoma.

On the use of gloves

Decide for yourself whether to wear gloves to change your urine collection system. Just as you didn’t have to wear gloves to urinate (go to the toilet in a small way) before surgery, you don’t have to wear them now. However, you may still prefer to wear gloves when changing your ostomy bag due to the likelihood of urine coming into contact with your fingers.

to come back to the beginning

Showering with urostomy

It is very important to shower daily. This will help you keep your skin clear.

Your urine collection system is waterproof. Do not remove your urine collection system while showering, unless you change it. On days when the urine collection system changes, you can remove the system and shower without it if you want. While you shower, urine will drain from your stoma.

Shower as you did before your surgery. Do not use perfumed or oil-based soaps around your stoma.

to come back to the beginning

Urostomy-related problems

Call your doctor’s office if you have any of the problems below. The office staff will forward your message to the WOC nurse and will be contacted later.

Skin problems

If urine leaks from under the glue pad, change the glue pad immediately.Do not apply tape to stop the leak.

If the leak persists after changing the adhesive pad, contact your WOC nurse. Perhaps to avoid leaks, you need a different system that provides a better fit.

If you have a problem with the skin around your stoma (peristomal skin), tell your WOC nurse. The most common skin problems are related to urine getting under the adhesive strip or if you are allergic to ostomy care products.

Tissue growths

One of the most common skin problems is the formation of tissue growths on the skin around the stoma. These growths are grayish or purple in color, wart-like, or covered with white dots (see Figure 2). They can cause pain around the stoma. The cause of growths is that the skin is in contact with urine all the time. If you develop tissue build-ups, call your doctor’s office and schedule an appointment with your WOC nurse.

Figure 2. Tissue growths around the stoma

If you are having problems with the formation of tissue growth around your stoma, you may need to:

  • Cut or shape the adhesive strip or use another pre-cut adhesive strip;
  • use a different type of adhesive backing;
  • Place a protective barrier on the adhesive backing (eg Colly-Seel disc, Coloplast Brava ® Protective Seal or Coloplast Brava plastic ring).

You may need to clean the immediate area around your stoma every time you change your urine collection system. This is done as follows:

  1. Mix ¼ cup white vinegar with ¾ cup water.
  2. Dip a gauze pad into this mixture. Place the gauze pad on your skin for 20 minutes.
  3. Rinse skin with water.
  4. Dry the skin well and apply a new adhesive pad.
Allergic reaction

Allergic reaction is another common skin problem. If you are allergic to any ostomy care products you are using, the skin around your stoma may become red or swollen (see Figure 3). You may also experience itching, burning, or discomfort. If you think you are having an allergic reaction, contact your doctor. You may need to see a dermatologist (skin doctor).

Figure 3. Allergic reaction around the stoma

If you have an allergic reaction, you should try a different brand of adhesive pad and pouch.

Rash

If you get a rash, tell your doctor or WOC nurse. They will advise you on how to treat it.

Infections of the genitourinary system

Signs and symptoms of urinary tract infections (UTIs):

  • urine odor more unpleasant than usual;
  • cloudy urine;
  • back pain;
  • nausea (feeling of impending vomiting) and vomiting;
  • loss of appetite;
  • temperature 100.4 ° F (38 ° C) or higher.

If you think you have developed a UTI, call your doctor.

To prevent the development of UTI:

  • Drink 8-10 glasses (8 oz. (240 ml)) of liquid every day. It is best to drink water.
  • Limit the amount of alcohol and caffeinated beverages you drink.
  • Use an antireflux ostomy bag and night bag. This will prevent urine from coming into contact with the stoma and causing infection.
  • Empty the pouch when it is ⅓ – ½ full.

You can also ask your doctor if you can take vitamin C (about 500-1000 milligrams) and sugar-free cranberry tablets daily. This will increase the acidity of the urine and can prevent the development of UTIs, reduce bad urine odor, and prevent skin damage.

Hernias

A hernia is a protrusion of a loop of intestine through a weak spot in the muscles. This leads to the appearance of a bulge. Often, the occurrence of a hernia is not accompanied by any symptoms. If there is a bulge around your stoma, see your doctor or WOC nurse.

Tips for avoiding hernia

Often the abdominal muscle around the stoma is weakened. To reduce the risk of developing a hernia, try to avoid constipation (straining during bowel movements), prolonged or severe coughing, and refrain from lifting heavy weights or straining.

The healing of tissues inside the body after surgery lasts up to a year, so listen to the sensations of your body. If you feel pain while doing something, stop doing it. Call your doctor if the pain persists.

Hernia repair

If you have a hernia, your WOC nurse may recommend a hernia bandage. Such a bandage is made according to your measurements. You can also use a corset or cycling shorts to support the hernia. In this case, you will need to cut an opening for the pouch in them.

A hernia brace, corset, or cycling shorts will not heal or prevent a hernia from getting worse. But with them it will be more comfortable for you, and besides, the protrusion will be adjusted and the clothes will sit better on you.

Hernias are usually not treated unless protruding bowel loops are pinched or twisted, or pain or other problems occur. Call your doctor or nurse right away if you have:

  • nausea;
  • vomiting;
  • abdominal pain;
  • edema in the abdominal cavity.

Urostomy and travel

Your travel decisions should not depend on your urostomy. Here are some tips to help you use your urine collection system on the road:

  • Bring additional accessories with you in case you find it difficult to get them on your trip.
  • If you are traveling by plane, train or bus, keep your accessories with you. Do not put them in your checked baggage. In this case, you will be prepared for situations when, for whatever reason, you will not have access to your baggage.
  • Avoid driving for 4-6 weeks after your surgery, unless directed otherwise by your doctor. You can choose not to tighten the seat belt too tight or use a pillow over your stoma. Alternatively, you can use a special ostomy pad that attaches to your safety belt. Consult your distributor or contact your WOC nurse for more information.
  • Talk with your WOC nurse about the options you can take on the road. If you think you might have difficulty visiting the toilet to empty your pouch while traveling, you can use a wearable leg bag.
  • If you are traveling by plane, it will be helpful for you to obtain a United Ostomy Associations of America (UOAA) Transportation Card at www.ostomy.org/uploaded/files/travel_card/Travel_Communication_Card.pdf.

For more information, visit the UOAA website at www.ostomy.org or call 800-826-0826.

Preparation for medical research

Always bring your accessories with you. Many pharmacies and medical centers do not have urostomy supplies and you may need an extra kit.

Visual diagnostics using contrast medium

If you are having a contrast scan, please bring an optional urostomy kit and a wearable leg bag or night bag. To conduct the study, you will need to drink more fluids than usual. This will help flush the contrast agent out of the body, but it will also increase the amount of urine produced. You may need to change your urine system if a leak occurs due to the production of more urine.

If it takes you an hour or more to get from the hospital to your home, empty your pouch before leaving. You may also need to do this on your way home or use a leg-wearable urine bag. It is also advisable to have a portable urine bag or other container in your car in case of an emergency.

Chemotherapy

If you are about to have chemotherapy, please bring an extra urostomy kit with you.Chemotherapy can cause the body to make more urine. It may also increase the sensitivity of the skin or change the adhesion of the adhesive to the skin. You may need to change the adhesive plate more often during chemotherapy to protect your skin and prevent leakage.

Other procedures

If you have a procedure that requires your doctor or nurse to access your stoma, you may need to use a different type of urine collection system. For example, you will have to change from a one-piece system to a two-piece system. Your doctor or nurse will discuss this with you before your procedure.

If you have any problems, contact your WOC nurse.

to come back to the beginning 90,000 Signs for Pokrov-2021 – what winter will be like

On October 14, the Orthodox Church celebrates the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos. At the service, parishioners remember the life of the Holy Virgin, as well as the events that took place in the capital of the Byzantine Empire in 910.

What is the feast of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, which means

Enemy troops approached the city, and people could only pray to the Lord, hoping for his help. The Mother of God covered the praying people with a head veil. Soon the enemy left the city.

There are several legends explaining the essence of the holiday. The history of the date goes back to the time when the Mother of God traveled the earth. In one of the villages she was not allowed to stay for the night – there lived people who did not believe in the Lord. Then the prophet Elijah unleashed a strong hail, lightning, and downpour on the inhabitants of the settlement. The unclean men began to offer prayers. The Mother of God unfolded a veil over the village and saved people.Grace reached the souls of sinners and melted their hearts.

Folk omens and customs for the holiday

Pokrov was actively preparing for the winter. From October 14, work in the garden was prohibited. Men collected firewood and insulated houses, women cooked and spun. The last time cattle were taken out in the field.

About the weather for the winter

The people call the Pokrov the first winter. People observed not only the weather conditions, but also the behavior of animals.

Sign Interpretation
Wind blowing from the north or east Cold winter
Until October 14, the cranes flew to warm lands Winter will be frosty
Snow fell It will snow on November 8
Rain Towards a rainy autumn
The day is clear and warm Autumn will be late, snow will fall after 21 November
Thunderstorm For winter with little snow

Before the Intercession, birch and oak completely shed their leaves – for a warm winter.

For an early marriage

The girls went to church to light a candle and turn to the Mother of God with the words: “Cover me with an imperishable veil, show me the right path.” The saint is the patroness of the family, and if the words of the asking girl are sincere, she will definitely help.

For conception and pregnancy

A bottle of holy water, a church candle and a deep cup were taken for the ritual. They poured water into a cup and read the conspiracy: “A sheep has lambs, a cow has calves, and give me, Mother of God, children.”They drank water during the day. Nobody was told about the ceremony.

Cash

In Pokrov, they went to the market to find a coin there. They took the money home to read a conspiracy over it: “Wealth finds me, money sticks to my hands. I count them, I will not count them ”.

Later the coin was used as a money talisman. It was kept in a wallet.

So that money would not leave the house, they went to Pokrov for mushrooms. Collected a full basket. The gifts of the forest were dried and they said aloud that these were gifts to the housekeeper. If done right, cash flow won’t run out all year.

For single girls

The girl who is the first to put a candle on the Pokrov in the temple will be the first to marry. The flames should be watched in the church. The candle burns evenly – family life will be calm and measured, cracks and smokes – serious difficulties are coming.

About Pokrov Wedding

From October 14, the wedding season begins. The marriage concluded on the Pokrov was considered the most reliable and lasting.

Much depends on the weather:

  • it rains – heaven bless new union
  • sunny and warm – warm relations will remain between spouses until old age
  • frost – young people await trials, but they will pass them with ease
  • thunderstorm – the spouses will live together until death, both will be centenarians

Married

The Intercession is a holiday for all women, because only them the Lord gave the opportunity to procreate. On October 14th, all mothers should have prayed.

The women took the icon of the Mother of God in their hands, stood on the bench. All members participated in the reading of the prayer.

Household

To make the year fruitful, the housewives melted the stove with branches of fruit trees. The omen predicted prosperity, health, comfort in the house all year round. A stove is rarely found in modern homes. The apple twig can be burned in the fireplace or on a saucer.

Good luck in business

In the morning, immediately after waking up, they took a piece of black bread and read the conspiracy: “Good luck will be on my side, and the house will become a full cup.”They ate the bread. The ritual was performed on an empty stomach.

Go to work

On the night of Pokrov, you should close your eyes and repeat the conspiracy in a whisper 7 times: “While I sleep, my angel of rest does not know, he is looking for work for me. The new job will feed me, the joy of giving and not losing my costume. ” In the morning, you need to close your eyes, pick up a pencil and point them to any vacancy. You should go there for an interview on the same day.

For the future

A prophetic dream can be seen on the Pokrov. The eve of the holiday is the time when the border between sleep and reality is weakened, the likelihood of higher forces answering the questions posed increases.

Before going to bed, you should read the prayer of the Mother of God, ask her to answer questions of interest through a dream.

Health

Children were poured with water through a sieve. The ritual was performed on the doorstep of the house. It was believed that the ceremony would protect them from disease.

If birthday

People born on October 14 are endowed with restraint and self-control.They should wear diamond jewelry as a talisman.

If on this day someone fell ill or died

The Feast of the Virgin symbolizes life, so much attention should be paid to living relatives. You cannot darken the date with tears for the dead. The situation changes if the date of death of a relative fell on October 14. The funeral is organized according to the established rules. You need to clearly understand why you can’t go to the cemetery after the Intercession. However, no one forbids commemorating the deceased at home or in church.

About dreams

Dreams with a clear storyline should be interpreted. The dream in which the Mother of God appeared is considered especially significant. In a dream, the Mother of God:

  • smiles – to happy events
  • crying – to sadness and sadness
  • closes his eyes – a person has many enemies
  • talks – in reality there are many tests ahead, but they will be able to cope with
  • descends from the sky – the cherished desire will soon come true

The Holy Shroud is in the hands – a conversation with the ill-wisher is ahead.

What not to do on this day October 14

As in any church holiday, you must not use foul language or abuse alcohol on the Intercession. Forbidden:

  • clean up, wash – these works need to be done on the eve of the holiday
  • heat the bath
  • cut and dye hair
  • do handicrafts: knit, embroider, darn
  • lend money and borrow money yourself

What can be done on the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos

In the morning, the parishioners go to church.Upon returning home, the family sits down at the table to enjoy their meal. Pancakes and a Pokrovsky loaf must be on the table. To appease the brownie, crumbs of loaf were scattered in the corners. What did you do on Pokrov:

  • girls covered their heads with a scarf
  • gave alms
  • congratulated married couples on the holiday
  • went to visit relatives and friends

In the evening, young people organized festive festivities with fun games, dances and songs.

How to avoid negative predictions

No special rituals required. It is enough to live according to the Christian commandments, not to allow backbiting, to give up hard physical labor on October 14.

Life Stories

Katerina, Elektrostal:

“My grandmother said that if the matchmakers were refused on October 14, then they would have to sit in girls for 3 years. It was so with my mother. Her parents refused to matchmakers – they considered that they were not rich people. As a result, my mother got married late. ”

Diana, Crimea:

“I usually observe all church holidays. One year I had to break the rule, only returned from a business trip, and I wanted to clean the house. It was just the Pokrov. In the evening I went to wash, slipped in the bathroom and broke my leg. I associate this event with the violation of the ban. ”

Teresa, Vitebsk:

“For a long time my husband and I could not have children. I was advised to sit in a chair after a pregnant woman, and that this event would certainly happen on Pokrov.
