Vitamin A (retinol, retinoic acid) is a nutrient important to vision, growth, cell division, reproduction and immunity. Vitamin A also has antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are substances that might protect your cells against the effects of free radicals — molecules produced when your body breaks down food or is exposed to tobacco smoke and radiation. Free radicals might play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases.
Vitamin A is found in many foods, such as spinach, dairy products and liver. Other sources are foods rich in beta-carotene, such as green leafy vegetables, carrots and cantaloupe. Your body converts beta-carotene into vitamin A.
As an oral supplement, vitamin A mainly benefits people who have a poor or limited diet or who have a condition that increases the need for vitamin A, such as pancreatic disease, eye disease or measles. If you take vitamin A for its antioxidant properties, keep in mind that the supplement might not offer the same benefits as naturally occurring antioxidants in food.
The recommended daily amount of vitamin A is 900 micrograms (mcg) for adult men and 700 mcg for adult women.
Research on oral vitamin A for specific conditions shows:
- Acne. Large doses of oral vitamin A supplements don’t appear to affect acne.
- Age-related macular degeneration. A large clinical trial showed that people at high risk of advanced age-related macular degeneration reduced their risk of developing the condition by 25 percent by taking a specific combination of vitamins that included beta-carotene. It’s not entirely clear what role beta-carotene played.
- Cancer. The association between use of vitamin A supplements and reduced risk of lung, prostate and other types of cancer is unclear.
- Measles. Vitamin A supplements are recommended for children with measles who are at an increased risk of vitamin A deficiency. Research suggests that supplementation might reduce death due to measles.
- Vitamin A deficiency. People who have low levels of vitamin A appear to benefit most from vitamin A supplements. This kind of deficiency isn’t common in the United States. Vitamin A deficiency causes anemia and dry eyes.
Beyond use as an oral supplement, vitamin A is used in topical creams to reduce fine wrinkles, splotches and roughness and treat acne.
A healthy and varied diet will provide most people with enough vitamin A. If you’re interested in the antioxidant properties of vitamin A, food sources are best. It’s not clear if vitamin A supplements offer the same benefits as naturally occurring antioxidants in food. Too much vitamin A can be harmful and excess vitamin A during pregnancy has been linked to birth defects.
Safety and side effects
Too much vitamin A can be harmful. Even a single large dose — over 200,000 mcg — can cause:
- Blurry vision
Taking more than 10,000 mcg a day of oral vitamin A supplements long term can cause:
- Bone thinning
- Liver damage
- Skin irritation
- Pain in the joints and bone
- Birth defects
If you are or might become pregnant, talk to your doctor before taking vitamin A. Excess use of vitamin A during pregnancy has been linked to birth defects.
Possible interactions include:
- Anticoagulants. Oral use of vitamin A supplements while taking these medications used to prevent blood clots might increase your risk of bleeding.
- Bexarotene (Targretin). Taking vitamin A supplements while using this topical cancer drug increases the risk of the drug’s side effects, such as itchy, dry skin.
- Hepatotoxic drugs. Taking high doses of vitamin A supplements can cause liver damage. Combining high doses of vitamin A supplements with other drugs that can damage the liver could increase the risk of liver disease.
- Orlistat (Alli, Xenical). This weight-loss drug can decrease the absorption of food sources of vitamin A. Your doctor might suggest that you take a multivitamin with vitamin A and beta-carotene while taking this medication.
- Retinoids. Don’t use vitamin A supplements and these oral prescription drugs at the same time. This could increase the risk of high vitamin A blood levels.

Could a Vitamin Play a Role in Acne Outbreaks? – WebMD

WEDNESDAY, June 24, 2015 (HealthDay News) — New research suggests that high levels of vitamin B12 may affect germ activity in certain people, boosting the odds that they’ll develop acne.
However, it’s too early to say if anyone should cut down on their vitamin B12 intake from food or vitamins to avoid getting pimples, researchers said.
“I don’t think we have studied enough to suggest that,” said study leader Huiying Li, assistant professor of molecular & medical pharmacology at the University of California, Los Angeles. Still, the research provides insight into not only vitamin B12 but also genetic activity that could prompt pimples.
“There are certain genes that could potentially influence whether people have acne breakouts or not,” she said. “These genes could be targets of future drug treatment.”
The study appears in the June 24 issue of Science Translational Medicine.
A deficiency in vitamin B12 can cause serious health problems, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Too little vitamin B12 has been implicated in anemia; digestive problems; and neurological problems, such as numbness and tingling in the extremities, vision problems and memory loss.
Vitamin B12 is found in animal products such as dairy and shellfish. Vegetarians and vegans are advised to take supplements or eat enriched foods to get this nutrient. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, “many people over age 50 lose the ability to absorb vitamin B12 from foods,” and weight-loss surgery can cause the same problem.
The current study looked at what factors make people more vulnerable to acne. Li and her colleagues found signs that vitamin B12 may boost acne by disrupting a type of skin bacteria known as Propionibacterium acnes that’s related to acne.
After linking the vitamin to acne, the researchers then analyzed 10 people with clear skin who were told to begin taking vitamin B12 supplements. Their extra consumption of vitamins affected how genes in skin bacteria processed the vitamin, Li said, although only one person subsequently broke out with acne.
Li said this provides more evidence that vitamin B12 can affect the activity of skin bacteria. According to her, the affected germs — P. acnes — can contribute to inflammation, a crucial component of acne.
Researchers have linked vitamin B12 to acne in prior studies, Li said. But several questions remain unanswered.
While genes acted differently in the only person in the study who developed acne, it’s not clear how many people may share a similar vulnerability. However, the activity of these genes could be important for treatment in the future, she said.
Li also said it’s not clear what the study findings could mean for people with acne or those who want to avoid it.
To make things more complicated, “exactly how the bacteria on our skin contribute to acne remains to be completely understood,” said Dr. Whitney Bowe, clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.
“For example, the bacteria P. acnes has long been thought to play a role in acne, but there are numerous people who have P. acnes on their skin and never develop acne,” said Bowe, who was not involved with the new study.
And simply killing the bacteria doesn’t work to cure acne, she said.
So now what? “It’s too soon to tell my patients to stop eating foods or taking vitamins that contain vitamin B12 based on this study,” Bowe said. “This study does suggest that high levels of B12 in the bloodstream might make acne worse in certain individuals. Further studies are needed to confirm this result and help us to understand the clinical relevance of these findings.”
And, again, it’s important to note that a deficiency of vitamin B12 can have serious consequences throughout the body and brain, according to the CDC.
Acne Related to Dietary Supplements
When treating patients with acne, obtaining an accurate medication history is recommended to determine if these therapies are potential causes of acne. In addition to certain prescription medications, certain dietary supplements have also been linked to acne. “A number of case reports and case series have described the onset of acne with certain dietary supplements,” explains Rajani Katta, MD. “Dietary supplement use is common in the United States, with multiple surveys showing that about half of American adults consume some type of supplement. Unfortunately, many patients are unaware these supplements are not FDA approved. Furthermore, side effects may be underreported because there are no post-marketing surveillance programs required for dietary supplements.”
Dr. Katta and colleagues have published a review article in the Dermatology Online Journal that described clinical findings reported in the literature on supplement-induced acne. “Our goal was to collect information on which dietary supplements have been reported as a cause of acne,” Dr. Katta says. Specifically, the authors reviewed dietary supplements containing vitamins B6 and B12, iodine, and whey protein as well as “muscle building” supplements that may potentially be contaminated with anabolic-androgenic steroids (Table). The review also presented data on specific mechanisms of action—known or hypothesized—for each supplement.
Vitamins B6 and B12
“One of the most important findings from our review is that even common everyday supplements like vitamins B6 and B12 may cause acne,” says Dr. Katta. “These vitamins have been linked to acne when used in high doses.” Acne lesions associated with high-dose vitamin B6 and B12 supplements have been described as monomorphic and although the pathogenesis is unknown, a number of hypotheses have been proposed.
According to the review, iodine-related acne may be related to the use of kelp supplements and has been reported as monomorphic, inflammatory pustules on the face and upper trunk. Dr. Katta and colleagues note that iodine may be found in some vitamin and mineral supplements as well as in kelp seaweed supplements.
Whey protein supplements, which are derived from milk, have become increasingly popular for bodybuilding, especially among adolescents, and are believed to support muscle growth because they are rich in branched chain amino acids. “Protein supplements should be used with caution,” Dr. Katta says. “Whey protein supplements and certain bodybuilding supplements have been linked to acne. ” Although the pathogenesis is not known, theories have focused on hormonal effects related to dairy.
Acne is a common side effect of anabolic-androgenic steroid use by bodybuilders, but steroids may also be present in dietary supplements for building muscle. “Many of my patients are surprised to hear that muscle-building or bodybuilding supplements may be contaminated with anabolic-androgenic steroids,” says Dr. Katta. “For example, a study of 776 dietary supplements from the FDA tainted supplements database found that 89% of muscle building supplements were adulterated with steroid-like ingredients or synthetic steroids.” As such, it is important to ask patients about use of any muscle building supplements, not just anabolic-androgenic steroids.
Dr. Katta says it is important for physicians to directly ask patients with acne about their use of any dietary supplements in addition to prescription medications. “We cannot rely on a written medication history alone because questionnaires often fail to adequately address full nutritional supplement use,” she says. “Instead, clinicians should verbally elicit this information. We should explicitly ask if patients are taking any vitamins or muscle building or bodybuilding supplements. We also need to ask if they take iodine, kelp, or seaweed. If they answer yes, we need to provide education on the potential risks of these seemingly innocuous dietary supplements.”
According to Dr. Katta, since most of the literature on acne due to supplement use comes from case reports and case series, larger research studies are needed to better understand the mechanisms by which acne develops. “We also need to determine if other supplements might potentially be linked to acne,” she says. “Another important question for future research is how to determine which patients are most susceptible to supplement-induced acne. As we gain these insights, the hope is these data will better inform our discussions with patients. ”

Vitamin E for Acne Scars
Although most vitamins help in wound healing, vitamin E oral supplements might negatively affect collagen synthesis and counteract the benefits of vitamin A supplementation in wound management. Some people believe that applying vitamin E oil to your acne scars can help them heal. Unfortunately, the proof for these effects is anecdotal.

Isotretinoin is a medicine used to treat very bad acne. It is usually used for cystic acne that did not get better after treatment with other medicines. It is important for you to take isotretinoin the right way. You should also know about the side effects of isotretinoin. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions about this medicine or if you have side effects when you take it.
Before taking isotretinoin, tell your doctor if you or anyone in your family has any of these conditions:
- liver disease
- heart disease
You should also tell your doctor if you are allergic to any medicines, especially parabens (chemicals used in cosmetics, moisturizers, and isotretinoin). Be sure to tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, even over-the-counter medicines.
Path to improved health
Isotretinoin has been prescribed just for you. Don’t share it with other people. Keep it away from children. You should take isotretinoin with food. You don’t have to keep the medicine in the refrigerator, but do keep it out of sunlight. Don’t keep it in a place that is very warm.
You may not give blood while you are taking this medicine or for at least 1 month after you stop taking it. You should also not have cosmetic procedures done to smooth your skin (such as waxing) while you are taking isotretinoin and for at least 6 months after you stop.
Isotretinoin is like vitamin A. So while you are taking isotretinoin, you should not take vitamin A pills or multivitamins that contain vitamin A. You also should not take any antibiotics without talking to your doctor first.
What should I expect during treatment?
The dosage of isotretinoin is different for each person. During your treatment, your doctor may change your dosage. Be sure to take isotretinoin just the way your doctor tells you. If you miss one dose, don’t take extra the next time. You will probably take isotretinoin for 15 to 20 weeks.
Your acne may get worse when you first start using isotretinoin. This usually just lasts for a little while. If this happens to you, your doctor may have you use other medicines along with the isotretinoin in this stage.

Too Much Vitamin B12 Linked to Acne
Too much vitamin B12 may promote acne, according to a new study.
The study found that, in the presence of vitamin B12, the skin bacteria that are commonly linked to acne start pumping out inflammatory molecules known to promote pimples.
In the study, scientists investigated the differences between skin bacteria from people prone to acne and bacteria from people with clear-skinned faces. The researchers looked at the bacteria’s gene expression, hoping to figure out why Propionibacterium acnes, which is the most common skin microbe, causes pimples in some people but not in others.
They found that vitamin B12 changed the gene expression of the skin bacteria, which could have led to acne-promoting inflammation.
In humans, vitamin B12 plays roles in metabolism, red blood cell formation and the maintenance of the central nervous system. It’s commonly found in multivitamins, but the new research could raise questions about whether people with acne should take vitamin B12 supplements.
“I think there’s a link” between vitamin B12 and acne, said Huiying Li, a co-author of the new study and an assistant professor of pharmacology at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine. Her team found a molecular pathway that could explain the link in their study, but it will need to be confirmed by future research.”There’s still a lot to be studied in order to really understand if B12 causes acne,” she said.
Looking for a mechanism
By looking at the gene expression patterns, Li’s team first found that the pathway that produces vitamin B12 was significantly altered in the skin bacteria of people with acne, compared with the skin bacteria of people without acne. This finding raised Li’s suspicions about B12’s role in acne, she said. Prior studies citing an association between these two elements confirmed the possibility of a link — research dating back to the 1950s has suggested that vitamin B12 supplements could contribute to some people’s acne.
Li’s research team then looked at the skin bacterium in pimple-free people who received a vitamin B12 injection. The researchers confirmed that the B12 supplement repressed the expression of genes in P. acnes involved in synthesizing the vitamin. A week after receiving the vitamin B12 injection, one of the 10 participants broke out in pimples. That person’s P. acnes gene-expression pattern also changed, the researchers found. Before the B12 injection, it was similar to those of the other healthy participants, but 14 days after the vitamin B12 shot, it looked much more like an acne patient’s pattern.
The researchers also did experiments on P. acnes growing in lab dishes.They found that when they added vitamin B12 to the bacteria, the microbes started producing compounds called porphyrins, which promote inflammation in acne. Inflammation is a key step in the later stages of acne development, Li said.
Together, the new findings suggest that when too much B12 is present, the bacteria have changes in their gene expression that suppress further synthesis of the vitamin. These bacteria switch to producing porphyrins, the researchers explained, and in some people, this uptick in inflammatory compounds may contribute to acne.
“We think the pathway we studied could potentially explain part of acne’s pathogenesis,” Li said.
Hang on to those vitamins
But although the study found a possible link, it did not prove that too much vitamin B12 definitely causes or worsens acne.
“The data and hypothesis are very intriguing, but much additional investigation is required to determine if this is a real cause-and-effect phenomenon,” said Josh Miller, a professor of nutritional sciences at Rutgers University who was not involved with the study.
In addition, although the new findings suggest that B12 supplements may promote inflammation, other studies have suggested the opposite — that vitamin B12 has anti-inflammatory properties, Miller said.
“Proof of a causative effect of B12 supplements on acne development will require randomized control trials with enough subjects to see a significant effect, if one exists,” he told Live Science.
Li also cautioned that it’s way too early to suggest that people dealing with acne should stop taking multivitamins with B12. Most of the studies that have found an increase in acne with vitamin B12 involved large doses of the vitamin, given by injections, she pointed out.
“This study does present some compelling evidence suggesting that supplementation with B12 can cause or exacerbate acne in a subset of individuals,” said Dr. Whitney Bowe, clinical assistant professor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. “However, we don’t have enough evidence at this point to broadly recommend that all acne patients try to avoid vitamin B12 supplements or foods rich in vitamin B12.”
The aim of the research was to better understand how humans, and the microbes that live on their bodies, interact to cause disease, Li said. A deeper understanding of microbial-disease pathways could lead to more targeted treatments, the researchers wrote in their study, published today (June 24) in the journal Science Translational Medicine.
“The study shows that “what we eat or drink can impact the health of our skin by affecting the microbes that live on our skin,” Bowe said. “We have 10 bacterial cells for every one human cell in our body. The more we learn about these bacteria, the more we are realizing the major impact they have on our health and well-being.”
