I love that green has become a popular color in fashion; for a long time, designers didn’t use much green because of superstitions regarding it.  Some say the superstition came from Carl Scheele, a Swedish chemist who experimented with arsenic to create a shade of green (known as Scheele’s Green) for wallpaper and fabric.  While the chemist knew arsenic was toxic, he figured it was harmless when used for something that wasn’t to be ingested.  However, when the fabric got damp, it would give off a poisonous gas that caused many to become ill and some die.

When Napoleon died, many thought it was from poisoning, though it was confirmed to instead be cancer.  However, in 1960 scientists analyzed a lock of Napoleon’s hair and found traces of arsenic.  Traces of arsenic were also found in his wife Joesphine’s hair as well as the hair of their son Napoleon II. Two decades later, scientists analyized a piece of green wallpaper from the Bonaparte home and guess what they found?  Yep, arsenic; his wallpaper was Scheele’s Green!

Others connect the superstition around the color green to the French actor and playwright Molière who died on stage wearing a green costume while performing for King Louis the 14th.   Green is also seen as an unlucky color with circus performers, some believe green costumes may cause an accident or death.

There have even been superstitions with the color green in relation to auto racing.  In 1920, Gaston Chevrolet the brother of the co-founder of Chevrolet Motors was driving a green racing car when he died in an accident.  Green remained an unpopular car color until brand sponsorships took over and cars wore the colors of the companies. When cars sponsored by Mountain Dew and Skoal, two companies with green as their colors, won races in the 1980s, it reduced the superstition. 

Some believe that wearing green to a funeral will mean that person will soon have to wear black to a funeral of a loved one.  In China there’s a superstition that when a man wears a green hat his wife is cheating on him.  There is an old English rhyme that states, “Married in green, ashamed to be seen.”

I don’t believe any of these superstitions and wear green quite often. I have a green blazer, a green cupro shirtdress, and a green velvet pantsuit. It is one of my favorite colors to wear and when it comes in fashion I stock up!  It has been a popular color, especially emerald green, in the past few years. In 2013, Pantone decided Emerald to be the Color of the Year.  Many high-end fashion designers such as Marni and Valentino featured Kelly green on the runway in the 2010’s. Green has been a prevalent color in many of Gucci’s collections this past decade.  While green may have been a superstitious color, it looks as though many do not believe it and green has become a popular color again in fashion, automobiles, and our world.

Superstitions: whether they are meant to bring good luck, or bad, there are a lot of them out there. Letting a black cat cross your path is considered bad luck. Finding a penny and picking it up? That’s considered good luck. Opening an umbrella indoors, walking under an open ladder, breaking a mirror = bad luck. Knocking on wood, carrying a rabbit’s foot, blowing out the candles on a birthday cake = good luck. When it comes to motorcycles, Harley-Davidson in particular, there is one superstition that outrides them all – the color green. Green being an ‘unlucky’ color is a very well-known superstition in the Harley world. If you’ve ever wondered why, or how, that superstition began, read on. Here are some of the most common and widely held beliefs:




Many people believe that the idea of green being an unlucky color for Harleys originated during World War II. At that time motorcycles were widely used for reconnaissance and communications. The most common military motorcycle on the front lines in World War II was the Harley-Davidson WLA, which was decked out in green military paint.

The purpose of these bikes, and their riders, was to deliver important messages between bases and camps. It is said that once the German snipers discovered this mission, they made it a specific point to target these green motorcycles, making the riders ‘sitting ducks’.




Another rumored reason for the ‘unlucky green’ superstition is that those WWII-era bikes, having recently returned from the front lines, were then refurbished and sold for domestic use. Given the wear and tear they received during the war, the condition of these motorcycles probably wasn’t top notch. It is reported that those bikes, still painted in their original green, were so worn out that they easily broke down and often ran into mechanical issues. To this day there are many riders that will not purchase, or even get on, a green motorcycle for fear that bad luck may strike them as well.



There are many other examples of the color green being associated with misfortune or bad feelings in general. Have you ever heard the terms ‘green eyed monster’ or ‘green with envy’? Both phrases imply that the color green is bad and undesirable. The color is also used to describe sickness, like when someone is ‘green around the gills’, and is used in reference to rotten food and mold.


Some of the stories surrounding the color green actually date back for centuries. In the late 1700’s, arsenic was used to create specific shades of green dye. This dye was then used in everyday items like fabric and wallpaper. When these items became damp, a poisonous gas was released which caused sickness – and even death – to those that were exposed to it.




As it turns out, the idea of green being bad luck goes beyond motorcycles and moldy food. Reports of green cars developing strange knocks and rattles, crashing, or simply breaking down for no reason, have been reported frequently over the years. The superstition is so strong in the racing community that it has been implied that Mario Andretti won’t sign autographs with green ink.



Green motorcycles, black cats, open ladders, or sidewalk pennies – everywhere we turn there are superstitions. We may never know for certain whether any of these superstitions are real, or where they came from. At the end of the day, that doesn’t seem to matter. People will walk under ladders, open their umbrellas in the living room, and they’ll even ride green bikes (well, some of them will). There are even instances where green is a lucky color (who hasn’t searched for a 4-leaf clover?). What have we learned from the origin of green being unlucky to Harley? It is difficult to say. But, at the end of the day, we can say this: superstitions may come and go, but regardless of the color of their bike, riders are for life.

What Is the Meaning of Color in Japanese Culture?

Japanese society has long-standing traditions that have shaped the Japanese for millennia. Specifically, colors have symbolic associations that appear in Japanese art, dress and rituals. Many colors have maintained those meanings even as Japanese society rapidly changes. 1 Black

4 Blue

Additionally, blue is considered a feminine color, and so, in combination with the association with purity and cleanliness, blue is often the color young women wear to show their purity. As a traditional Japanese color, shades of blue are used on kimonos to represent the seasons and fashion expressions.

5 Green

Green is the color of fertility and growth in traditional Japanese culture. As the color of nature, the Japanese word for green, midori, is also the word for vegetation. In addition, the color green represents youth and vitality, and the energy of growth. Green can also represent eternity, since evergreen trees never lose their leaves or stop growing. Bringing the color green into home decor is viewed as adding the same sense of nature inside.

Do you ever contemplate in the morning what to wear for the day? This question is answered more easily in Thailand than other countries. Especially when it comes to color choice.

Colors in Thailand matter. At least for part of the Buddhist population. In Thai (and Khmer) tradition, each day of the week is assigned a specific color. This is the reason, you see many people wearing yellow on Mondays, pink on Tuesdays, and so on. The chart below lists the colors considered lucky and unlucky on specific days of the week.

Dressing in the color of the day has somewhat lost its importance in modern Thailand. People still know all of these colors by heart and consider the color of the day they were born their lucky color.

None of these colors seem more important than yellow, which is the color of H.M. King Bhumibol, who was born on December 5th, which was a Monday.

As a teacher, try wearing yellow on Mondays, pink on Tuesdays, and light blue on Fridays. You will demonstrate your understanding of this particular aspect of Thai culture and therefore gain a certain level of respect from your Thai peers. Some schools even require all teachers to wear yellow during the first week of December to pay respect to the King.


How The Color Green Became A Deadly Bad-Luck Superstition In Racing

In order to avoid pinching on St. Patrick’s Day, you’re supposed to wear green at school, the office, or the horribly overcrowded faux-Irish pub you find yourself in. But at the race track, it’s historically been best to take the pinch—the color green has long been a sign of bad luck in racing, for an old and strange reason.

While it originated long before NASCAR did, the “green superstition” gained a stronger hold in those ranks than elsewhere. It hung around well into the 1980s, but the series is mostly over the supernatural powers of the color these days.

Some of the most popular cars in the sport have worn a green wrap in recent years, including Carl Edwards’ Subway car, Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s old AMP Energy scheme and Danica Patrick’s former GoDaddy colors. Kurt Busch, Denny Hamlin and defending Sprint Cup Series champion Kyle Busch all have green in one or more of their wraps as well. (And in other racing series, obviously, British Racing Green has a heritage that spans decades.)

But the color is a relatively recent adoption into NASCAR. Though no one is completely sure how the the superstition began, its roots arguably date back to two crashes that occurred a decade apart from each other—one in 1910 and the next in 1920.

G/O Media may get a commission

The first event involved the green car of Lee Oldfield, when a wreck at the 1910 New York State Fair in Syracuse landed him in the grandstands. The incident killed several spectators, according to NASCAR.com, leading Oldfield himself to believe that he was the source of the superstition.

If that wreck was the official beginning of the superstition, it just got stronger 10 years later. Gaston Chevrolet, race driver and younger brother of Chevrolet Motor Car Company co-founder Louis Chevrolet, entered a race scheduled for Nov. 25, 1920 at Beverly Hills Speedway, a board track in California.

For those unfamiliar, the era of board-track racing was a deadly one in both car and motorcycle racing. According to Smithsonian.com, newspapers even began referring to the motordome venues as “murderdomes.”

The Beverly Hills Speedway murderdome was just over a mile in length, making for fast and close racing. While trying to make a pass on lap 146 of a race there, Wired writes that the green car Chevrolet drove made contact with a competitor and shot up the ramp. The two-car wreck killed three people: Chevrolet, fellow racer Eddie O’Donnell and O’Donnell’s riding mechanic, Lyall Jolls.

And so the superstition went on. Avoidance of green cars in racing peaked between the 1920s and the 1950s, mostly because it was easier to do back then.

As sponsorship of cars became more prevalent throughout various racing series in the 1970s and 1980s, racers had to begin ridding themselves of their feelings toward the color. But Formula One drivers had to get over the superstition long before the series introduced the era of car sponsorship in 1968, as paint colors represented driver nationalities. The British had the “unlucky” draw of green during that era.

As a result, the potential to have a green sponsor on the car wasn’t such a big deal in F1 by the time the series’ new allowance rolled around. From NASCAR.com:

“In the mid-60s, you started to have Formula One drivers and sports-car drivers who said, ‘What’s all this green nonsense about? I don’t know anything about that,’” [Indianapolis Motor Speedway historian Donald] Davidson said. “I think it gradually went away.”

But the same couldn’t be said in NASCAR, as most drivers overseas dropped the superstition far earlier than the stock-car folks did. As the NASCAR competitors held onto the tradition, some of their cautionary measures toward green-induced bad luck went to almost extreme lengths. From Sports Illustrated:

“My granddaddy didn’t like people even wearing green to the track,” said [former Camping World Truck Series driver Rick] Crawford, a third-generation racer out of Mobile, Ala. “They’d actually turn around and go back home if a pit-crew member or somebody was wearing green.”

Crawford’s grandfather wasn’t the only one who took the green avoidance so seriously. Even with sponsorship money involved in the matter, NASCAR drivers like Tim Richmond still stayed true to their superstitions.

According to Sports Illustrated, Richmond remained adamant in his quest to keep green off of his car throughout the 1980s. Richmond insisted that rather than driving the green paint scheme of Folgers decaffeinated coffee, he would instead get behind the wheel of a car coated in the red hue associated with the brand.

Other than Richmond, the 1980s ended up being a good era for the color green in NASCAR. Darrell Waltrip took home 12 race wins and the 1981 NASCAR Cup Series title with a green Mountain Dew car, further ushering out the sour feelings toward the color at the race track.

The superstition faded further as the years went on, and now the curse of the color green is almost as under the radar as the curse of the land of Talladega Superspeedway—still around, but not very widely believed or talked about these days. From NASCAR.com:

Of course, none of that means today’s drivers believe green cars to be unlucky. Jeff Gordon admits to being familiar with the superstition “until I had a race car that had green on it, and I won a lot with it,” he said, referring to his famous No. 24, which won four titles in a DuPont scheme that featured rainbow stripes.

And last year, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Kyle Busch pulled a green car into victory lane at Homestead-Miami Speedway to celebrate both a race win and one of the most unexplainable comebacks in the sport’s history—missing 11 races due to broken leg and foot sustained a crash prior to the 2015 Daytona 500, only to come back and win the championship under the series’ new rules.

These days, perhaps it’s not such bad luck to wear green around the garages. In retrospect, the superstition hung probably around for a few decades too long.

But don’t hold it against the NASCAR folks for holding onto that weird green superstition a bit longer than the rest of the racing world did—odds are, you still look for four-leaf clovers on occasion.

People with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) sometimes have extreme fears or anxieties about things most people would consider harmless superstition. This might include anxieties surrounding unlucky numbers, being avoidant of certain colors, or having extreme fears around what most would call childish superstitions. Indeed, superstitious fears are common among those with early onset or childhood OCD.

Lucky and Unlucky Numbers

Many people believe that certain numbers are lucky and others are unlucky, but the person with OCD will take this fear to an extreme. They may feel fear when the dreaded number appears on a digital clock, a phone number, or someone’s address. A student who believes 5 is a bad number may find himself dropping courses with the number 5 in the course code, fearing that the number 5 will herald a bad grade. Many people with OCD, particularly those in the Western world will find 13 and 6 to be “bad” numbers. In fact, fear of the number 13 is so common that this has its own name — triskaidekaphobia. The number 4 is often considered good by people with OCD, because it feels natural, has good mathematical properties, and is an even number. But someone with OCD can latch onto any number for a variety of idiosyncratic reasons. People in some Asian cultures, for example, often find 4 to be a very unlucky number, because the word “four” sounds almost like “death” in Mandarin Chinese.

Fear of 666 is common, due to its association with evil, as in the Bible the book of Revelations says the sign of the anti-Christ will be “666”. One person with OCD says:

“I’ve had this fear for a while but have never really dwelled on it much, but now I am spending far too much time worried about it, and today it’s triggered my fear to an even greater extent. I am scared of a certain number. I can’t even write it down because I just panic when I see it. Basically, it’s the same number times three (3 digits). I think that if I see it it’s the devil spying on me. (I can’t even type it).”

This type of OCD is not to be confused with arithmophobia or numerophobia, where a person fears all numbers, especially complex mathematical computations. People with OCD surrounding numbers will fear some numbers but not others.

Colors with Special Significance

People with OCD may ascribe a special significance to certain colors. For example, some people with OCD may believe that the color red is bad because the devil is often depicted as being red. People with contamination fears surrounding blood might fear red because it reminds them of blood. However, red may not be an unlucky color for Native American or Chinese sufferers, becasuse in these cultures red is thought to bring happiness, success, and wealth.

Superstitious Fears

People with OCD may also have extreme fears around things most people would call childish superstitions. Individuals with OCD generally have insight, in that they know their obsessions likely aren’t real. But OCD is the “what if” disease. So, while someone with a fear of harming someone by accident might be able to convince themselves there’s a chance they hit someone while driving, it is harder to rationalize stepping on a crack. However, the impulse to respond to the “what if” feels the same as any other type of OCD, so the form of the obsession is not the issue, as all people with OCD experience the same distressing sensation. Every time you give into compulsion it strengthens the OCD.

One day a person with OCD might be walking down the street and see the sidewalk crack. They may briefly think of the old superstitious saying “don’t step on a crack, or …” and avoid the crack just in case. Because, even though it’s silly, who would want to cause harm over something so small, so why not? The problem with OCD is that these brief thoughts are the same as what non-OCD people occasionally get flashing through their mind, but in the case of OCD it does not go away, and instead grows stronger over time, one gives in and does the compulsion (i.e., avoiding the crack). While this might seem like a cute quirk, obsessions eventually consume every second of the sufferers day. What begins as avoiding a crack, then might move to avoiding any sidewalks, which might then spiral to all roads, and then eventually to not leaving the house. A person may not even be able to watch TV for fear of seeing a sidewalk or someone stepping on one in a TV show. This is how the OCD can spread and impact every aspect of ones life.

So, the superstitious obsessions can latch onto anything from avoiding walking on cracks, to avoiding black cats, being afraid to walk under a ladder, and many other sorts of superstitious behaviors. Certainly some people are prone to superstition or perhaps even take comfort in these rituals, such as the sport team that wins a game after having spaghetti, and then decides to eat spaghetti before every other big game. But with OCD, the thoughts cause great distress, and are all consuming, with the sufferer going to great lengths to avoid the anxiety inducing stimuli.

Thankfully, regardless of the type of OCD, all types of OCD, including superstitious fears, can be effectively treated. People with this sort of OCD should seek out a mental health provider experienced in exposure and ritual prevention (ERP, also referred to as EX/RP).
