Uniqlo’s Pokémon T-shirt Contest Winners Announced Then Disqualified

This is why you always read the fine print.

Two t-shirt design finalists in Uniqlo’s UT Grand Prix 2019 have had their designs removed from the competition for not abiding by the contest rules.

“Grand Prize: Not Applicable”?

The theme for the contest was Pokémon, and 18,000 t-shirt designs were submitted from all over the world. On May 20, they announced the top 24 designs to be printed as part of Uniqlo’s UT collection and sold at Uniqlo stores worldwide. These t-shirt designs were hand-picked by a panel of bigwigs at The Pokémon Company, Game Freak Inc., and Uniqlo.

The top three designs were set to receive cash prizes from $1,000 to $10,000, and the top design was also going to be featured in the upcoming Pokémon Sword & Shield games.

This number one slot was awarded to Chinese designer Li Wen Pei for his design called “Ocean King,” featuring three Magikarp Pokémon under their final evolved form, Gyarados.

What “Ocean King” would have looked like in-game.

However, Uniqlo suddenly pulled the design and issued a notice on the UT contest website on May 22, saying:

“UNIQLO, the Japanese global apparel retailer, today announces that it has disqualified the Grand Prize winner and another finalist in its Pokémon-themed UT GRAND PRIX 2019 design contest after learning that the designs in question were not in accordance with the terms of that competition. UNIQLO will not award the Grand Prize to another entrant or sell merchandise featuring the designs.”

As for what rules exactly Li Wen Pei violated, it seems it was this particular clause in the contest guidelines: “All submissions must be original designs and not have been published before.” After screenshots started circulating of the Ocean King design printed on smartphone cases and T-shirts on the popular Chinese e-commerce site Taobao, suspicions rose that he hadn’t followed that particular rule.

In response, Li Wen wrote a blog post on Weibo to make the following statement: “Hello everyone. I sold a small number of smartphone cases with the same artwork (before I submitted it for Pokémon UTGP 2019). Unfortunately, there are pirates who have pirated my artwork. Therefore please do not share the pirated goods.”

However, even if the t-shirts were pirated merchandise that Li Wen wasn’t selling himself, clearly selling the smartphone cases and admitting to it was enough to implicate himself and get kicked out of the competition.

Since then, another design has also been found guilty of being a previously sold design — this sumi-e ink wash design of Mewtwo by UK artist AJ Hateley.

She sold the t-shirts back in 2016, and although it’s not still in production, a Tumblr post announcing the launch seems to have been enough to incriminate her.

Remember folks, the internet is forever, and always remember to read the fine print.

What about the other Pokémon t-shirt designs?

As for the other t-shirt designs, they seem to be safe (for now…) and there’s still loads of sweet designs in the bunch! One of them is this cute Pikachu ice cream design by Gary Chen:

It looks so good, maybe it’ll inspire someone to make real Pikachu ice cream like this! We just hope they take some notes from the Pikachu donut disaster from last year.

Here’s another tee design by HVNN featuring all of our favorite ghost-type Pokémon, including the almighty Gengar, Mimikyu, Bnette, and Chandelure.

Ayumi Kato from Japan submitted this neon silhouette design of Pikachu which wouldn’t look out of place along Osaka’s dotonbori.

Dana from the Philippines created this cute origami-inspired design, which seems about on par for typical baffling origami instructions.

These and the other UT Grand Prix finalist t-shirt designs will go on sale starting June 24, 2019, in Uniqlo stores and sites worldwide. Adult sizes cost ¥1,500 yen ($14) and children sizes cost ¥990 ($9).

UNIQLO「Daniel Arsham x Pokémon Collection」

For this collection UNIQLO and Pokemon collaborated with Daniel Arsham.  Daniel Arsham is a contemporary artist born in Ohio, USA in 1980. His unique worldview and his conceptual artworks such as “Fictional Archeology” and “Future Relic” are catching many people attention.

The topic chosen for Ms. Arsham for this collaboration is “The Pokemon world in 3020 AD”. The seven designs available for men, women and children show Pikachu, Mewtwo, Jiggypluff crystallized over a long period of time and with some parts broken. Ash and a Pokedex also appear.

Last year Pokemon already collaborated with an artist for its new Pokemon Store in Parco Shibuya and they created a joint collection only available at that store. On that occasion, the selected artist was a graffiti artist, giving it a more urban and youthful style. Now Uniqlo has also wanted to collaborate with an artist, but they have chosen a more elegant line, with pencil drawings that look like sculptures.

These Cute Pokémon T-Shirts Will Be Available Online & in Uniqlo Stores From 24 June!

If you’re a fan of Pokémon and Uniqlo’s UT collection, here’s good news!

Last year in October, Japanese clothing label Uniqlo ran a T-shirt design competition for its UT Grand Prix 2019 and the theme was Pokémon. Fans from all over the world were asked to create a graphic tee based on their favourite Pokémon character. Now that deadlines are closed and Uniqlo has gone through over 18,000 design submissions (their highest ever recorded!), the winning designs have finally been unveiled.

According to NextShark, a total of 24 winning designs have been selected and those adorable tees featuring our favourite Pocket Monsters will be coming to a Uniqlo store near us very soon! Gotta buy ’em all!

Check out the top 3 winning designs below:

Grand prize winner:

Source: SoraNews24

Named “Ocean King”, this was designed by Li Wen Pei and it features three Magikarp below its evolution, Gyarados. However, it was later disqualified because Li had been discovered to be selling the same design on counterfeit tees and smartphone cases prior to the contest. This violates the contest rules which states that “qualifying designs must not have been published before”, SoraNews24 reported.

Second prize winner:

The front & back design | Source: Uniqlo

This monochrome tee was created by Mizukilobyte from Japan. The front has a simple pocket design emblazoned with a Poké Ball while the back is where it scores brownie points for camouflaging the Unown Pokémon in an eye test chart. Cute AND clever!

Third prize winner:

Source: Uniqlo

Second runner-up goes to Emily from the US and her “Pikachill” tee (adorable name!) shows Pikachu on vacay mode, sipping on a summer drink next to his buddy, Exeggutor on a tropical beach.

The top winners will get take home $10,000, $2,000, and $1,000 (approx. RM42,000, RM8,400, and RM4,200) respectively, including an exclusive invite to the awards ceremony in Japan as well as the 2019 Pokémon World Championships in Washington, DC. Meanwhile, other winning participants will get $500 (approx. RM2,000) for their creative designs.

Check out some of the other Pokémon tees that you’ll be seeing in stores soon:

Uniqlo’s Pokémon T-shirt design contest winners announced

Japanese clothing retailer Uniqlo announced the winners of its annual UT Grand Prix T-shirt design contest on Monday, with the winning designs “launching soon online and in all stores.” This year’s theme was Pokémon, so of course there are some adorable designs hitting the shelves.

The contest, which launched in October 2018, tasked talented Pokémon fans across the globe with designing graphic T-shirts inspired by their favorite ‘mons. The winning design, by Li Wen Pei, is titled “Ocean King” and features three Magikarp and their evolved form, Gyarados. Check it out!

Congrats!Uniqlo

In second place, a fan who goes by mizukilobyte designed a clever vision test with the hieroglyphic-like Pokémon Unown hiding among the symbols. The third place design finds our favorite electric mouse in vacation mode, leaning against an Alolan Exeggutor with sunglasses and a tropical drink. Designer Emily gave it the incredible nickname “Pikachill.”

If you’re wondering how this is Pokémon-themed it’s time to adjust your prescriptionUniqlo

The three winners will each receive a cash prize ($10,000, $2,000, and $1,000, respectively), plus an invitation to the awards ceremony in Japan and the 2019 Pokémon World Championships.

Those three winning designs aren’t the only new Pokémon tees coming to Uniqlo, though. While the designers won’t receive prize money, several “special selections” from the design contest will be produced as well, and they’re good. Here are a few of our favorites.

As a big fan of Ditto, specifically Ditto as other ‘mons, my personal winner is this shirt starring a literal pile of Dittos.

There’s no word yet as to when the shirts will be available — the landing page just says “launching soon” — so if you need us we’ll be over here refreshing Uniqlo’s site over and over again.

90,000 Uniqlo Announces Winners of Pokémon

T-shirt Design Contest

Uniqlo announced the launch of the UT (Uniqlo T-Shirt) collection, in
which will include the best design options from the UT GRAND PRIX 2019 competition (its
the theme was Pokémon characters). The collection will go on sale in Russia in
early July and will be presented in all Uniqlo stores in Moscow,
Petersburg, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov-on-Don and
Yekaterinburg.

UT GRAND PRIX 2019 competition received a great response – more than 18
000 applications from all over the world, which only confirms the popularity of Pokémon
(Pokémon). The jury selected 24 winners, and the 1st place received the design, in
which perfectly captured the charm of Magikarp and Gayardos, Pokémon from
the first generation of games.

UT GRAND PRIX jury comment: “Applications from more than 40 countries and regions
illustrate the incredible enthusiasm of the participants, and we saw many
reimagining Pokémon characters. We were delighted with
designs of the winners of the competition and we know for sure – people will love these T-shirts and
will be worn with pleasure! ”

The first place according to the results of UT GRAND PRIX 2019 was taken by Li Wen Pei
Pei) (China): “I named my design“ King of the Ocean ”. The idea was
to use a totem style. The first one I remembered as
a dedicated Pokémon fan is Magikarp. I thought it would be great
show how the Magikarp evolves from a weak creature into an incredible
strong creature, Gayardos. I seem to have managed to convey weakness and strength
through the contrast of red and blue. ”

Second place – mizukilobyte (Japan): “In my concept, I played with the image
Anoun disguised as an eye test. I took as a basis
the well-known Landolt rings used to test eyesight, so
my design will be understood by people all over the world and I hope they will like it.AND,
of course, I want to express my special thanks to Anoun. ”

Third place – Emily (USA): “I decided to make a summer design,
after all, it is in the summer that we actively wear T-shirts. Like no one else for this
the season will suit Pikachu relaxing with a refreshing cocktail under the Alola
Executor (character in the form of a palm tree). I think Exegutor is great
conveys the mood of a tropical beach. ”

The 1st place design will appear on the main character’s T-shirt
the new Pokémon Sword and Shield game coming to Nintendo Switch.Customers will be able to order a similar T-shirt. This UT design
first appears in a video game.

Pokémon is one of the most popular media franchises, which began with
due to the launch of the video games Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue in Japan in 1996.
The essence of the game was to catch, train and sell unique
creatures, rapidly gained deafening popularity around the world.
The video games were followed by the release of the collectible card game
Pokémon Trading Card Came and much-loved animation
animated series.Total sales of games exceeded 300 million, and released in
2016 mobile game Pokémon GO reached over 1
billion downloads worldwide (2018 data). For over 20 years
Pokémon is loved by both kids and adults around the world.

The Uniqlo brand has finally revealed the Pokémon collection, in the creation of which American artist and sculptor Daniel Arsham has contributed. The collaborators began announcing its appearance long before the official release and created intrigue with statements that the images of the iconic characters in Japanese animation would be reimagined.

The result will not disappoint fans of the artist’s work. The famous Pikachu, Mewtwo, Jigglypuff and Esha Ketchum appear on prints in the form of cracked Arsham sculptures.

The Daniel Arsham x Pokémon x Uniqlo UT collection will only go on sale on April 24th.When T-shirts with plaster Pokemon will appear in Russia, it is not yet known. The complete collection can be viewed here.

The artist himself showed the process of working on the collection on his Instagram page.

Daniel Arsham is famous for his sculptures, which are easily recognizable by the predominance of white and the games with space that create optical illusions. Walls that turn into a fabric through which human figures try to break through, or, conversely, draw objects in the room into themselves, are characteristic signs of the artist’s style. His portfolio includes boutique designs for Dior, Louis Vuitton, COS, Calvin Klein, stage design by the choreographer Merce Cunningham and a project with Pharrell Williams: at the Parisian Galerie Perrotin in the spring of 2014. In 2017, he was listed by HypeBeast as one of the 100 Most Influential Persons in the Industry.

90,000 Uniqlo Pokemon Clothing Assortment Showcases Characters You’ve Never Seen Before

Uniqlo launched the Pokemon T-shirt line in collaboration with contemporary artist Daniel Arsham.

“A famous literary designer’s concept of ‘fictional archeology’ showcases some of your favorite Pokemon characters as sculptures dating back 1,000 years ago,” according to Uniqlo’s website.

The prints included in the collection are adorned with some striking and interesting designs inspired by Pokémon, including the Crystal Pokedex, which looks like it was excavated from an archaeological site, the Mevtwo statue “transformed into a crystal,” and another Pikachu statue, and trainer from the year “3020”.You can also choose a T-shirt with the classic Pokemon logo that also looks like it was chipped a little and weathered.

All designs look like artifacts discovered in the distant future and this is a truly unique style that really stands out on T-shirts. This isn’t the first time Uniqlo has released a Pokémon collection. We’ve seen summer-themed Pokémon designs and fan-made Pokémon shirts in the past….

Ohio-born artist for design, Daniel Arsham, is renowned for his black and white aesthetic, and his work is described on the site as “free from linear concepts of past, present and future.”

Pokemon has inspired a lot of fun peripherals and accessories lately, the most recent being Razer’s Pikachu-designed headphones that can be charged in a Pokeball. The Daniel Arsham line is now available at the Uniqlo store, but it looks like the sizes are already selling out quickly, so you may have to quickly come up with a design if you don’t want to miss out.
