How to Make a Copper Pipe Star Light

If you have any lone pieces of copper pipe, why not make a copper pipe star light?

I love seeing Christmas lights at this time of year. I personally think lights add that special something to Christmas décor and a tree can look bare without some sort of fairy lights.

I’m excited to share this DIY Copper Pipe Star Light project with you. I was inspired by a similar project made using sticks and I thought I could replicate the same look, using copper pipe.

Of course, I commissioned my dad to create the star using copper pipe he had at home. I sent the plans and picture of what I was after and he went to work.

We decided the best lengths to use for this project was 400mm (40cm), but you can choose whatever length you like, making it bigger or smaller depending on where you are going to display your light.

I chose to use 100mm (10cm) pieces to show how to create the star shape.

Materials

This is what you will need:

2 meters of 15mm Copper Pipe

Copper cutters or Hack Saw

Epoxy Adhesive

Measuring tape

Zip Ties

Scissors

Chubby Pencil

Typo Copper Wire Lights

Instructions: How to Make a Copper Pipe Star Light

You will need to measure and cut your pieces of pipe. You will need 5 lengths of 15mm copper pipe at 400mm (40cm) long each. You can use whatever lengths you like, but this is the perfect size for wrapping 3m of wire lights.

Once you have cut your 5 pieces, it’s time to put them together to create the star shape. I have used 100mm (10cm) lengths to show you how to create the star shape.

You will need to indent one of the crossover pieces to ensure a better fit.

Glue the meeting ends in place and use zip ties to hold the star in place.

Once the glue has dried, cut the zip ties off and wrap around your copper wire fairy lights. These can be bought from Typo for $19.95. Make a note to check the colour of the lights. We originally bought pink lights and didn’t realise our mistake until we turned the lights on.

Once we got the right lights, they made all the difference in the look I was wanting to achieve.

What do you think? To keep the copper from going black, you will need to add a lacquer or use Brasso to shine the copper up.

Do you make your own decorations at Christmas?

India celebrates Diwali under shadow of Covid and air pollution | India

It is the festival that celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, and this year Diwali held a special significance for India as it got back into full swing for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic began.

Oil lamps lit up windows, shops, homes and monuments across the capital, Delhi, and devotees gathered at temples and shrines, as excitement over the festival, severely dampened last year by Covid-19, gripped the country once more.

In the holy city of Ayodhya in the state of Uttar Pradesh, 900,000 earthen lamps were lit on the banks of the Sarayu River as dusk fell on Wednesday. Hindus believe the city is the birthplace of the god Ram. In Amritsar, the Sikh Golden temple was enveloped in fairy lights.

In accordance with longstanding tradition to mark the festival, the armies of India and Pakistan exchanged sweets at the Tithwal crossing bridge on the Line of Control that divides the Indian and Pakistani parts of Kashmir.

The Hindu festival represents new beginnings, but for many across India who lost their relatives and loved ones in the devastating Covid-19 second wave that swept through India in April it was the first Diwali without family members.

In Delhi, Shriya Chatterjee, 42, said the festival would not feel the same without her mother, who died in April from the virus. “My mum loved Diwali,” she said. “She had all these traditions she would make us do every year and would boss us all around to make sure everything was perfect. It would drive me crazy but now this year I’m making sure we celebrate as she would have. But I’ve avoided parties and we are keeping it small, to be cautious because we know that Covid hasn’t gone away.”

Even though coronavirus cases in India are currently at some of their lowest levels since the pandemic began, with just over 12,000 new cases reported per day, zero Covid deaths in Delhi and the lowest active caseload in more than 250 days, there were concerns that complacency during the festival could lead to a new rise in cases, or even set in motion India’s third wave.

In an address, India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, had urged people to take precautions during the celebrations and to be wary of Covid. However, Diwali parties were in full swing across Delhi in the days leading up to the festival, and markets in the capital and across the country were crammed with people squashed together, with little room for Covid precautions to be observed.

For Delhi residents, the morning of Diwali also brought with it the annual spectre of pollution, as air quality hit hazardous levels and a thick brown smog shrouded India’s capital. Levels of PM2.5 – the smallest and most harmful particles polluting the air – peaked at an average of 389 on Thursday. The figure is more than 15 times higher than the safe limits set by the World Health Organization.

Though polluting firecrackers were banned, and police seized four tonnes of them the night before Diwali, they could still be heard erupting across the city as night fell.

Members of teams coached by Bob Birarda and Hubert Busby Jr. , both accused of coaching misconduct, welcome new external investigation but hope to be included in its scope and mandate, in a statement released Monday morning

When Janice Rubin investigated the allegations surrounding Jian Ghomeshi at CBC in 2015, two senior managers who had been placed on leave left the corporation just before her report was made public. When Melody Jahanzadeh conducted a probe into allegations of excessive force in an arrest last year, two special constables lost their jobs as a result.

So when Major League Soccer announced earlier this week that it had retained its law firm, Rubin Thomlinson LLP, to conduct an independent review of how the Vancouver Whitecaps organization handled allegations of coaching misconduct brought by members of the Whitecaps’ women’s team in 2008 and 2011 against former coaches Bob Birarda and Hubert Busby Jr, respectively, it was broadly seen as a necessary step towards transparency and any necessary accountability.

Now the former players have released a statement through PFACan (Professional Footballers Association Canada, Canada’s first union for both female and male elite players) calling for action to ensure this is the case. Having found the results of three previous inquests conducted by the Whitecaps inadequate, their hope is this time is different.

“Rubin Tomlinson is very well-known in the employment field. They’re viewed as the firm you’d go to if you want to find out the truth,” said Paul Champ, an Ottawa-based lawyer who works in employment, law and human rights, and is also the legal counsel for PFACan.

“Their integrity is unimpeachable and they’re very thorough. They’re not afraid of saying the tough things to organizations. And so whenever I see an employer saying that they’ve hired Rubin Tomlinson, I take that as a terrific sign that an organization really wants to get to the bottom of things.

“I don’t know the terms of reference or the mandates that were provided to those previous investigation firms, but I know that Janice Rubin does not take on files if she’s got a constrained mandate that’s not going to get to the bottom of things. Her value is that integrity — she’s not going to compromise that. She’s got more than enough work, shall we say, and I think that the victims who played for the Whitecaps are going to be well-served by the investigation that’s led by that firm.”

PFACan was approached by Vancouver Whitecaps and Canada U20 women players to assist them with the investigations by MLS and Canada Soccer into coaches Birarda and Busby Jr. PFACan is all about giving a voice to players, and they deserve input into these processes. Our statement: pic.twitter.com/0cuWw5wBGW

— Professional Footballers Association Canada (@canada_pfa) November 8, 2021

Bob Birarda, who was the Whitecaps’ women’s coach and Canadian Under-20 women’s coach in 2008, is currently facing charges including six charges of sexual exploitation, two counts of sexual assault and one count of child luring. Malloree Enoch, another former player who was coached by Hubert Busby Jr., detailed her story to The Guardian last month, causing MLS to announce its action.

Busby, currently the head coach of the Jamaican women’s national team, was suspended by the Jamaican Football Federation, while four executives from the Whitecaps who were involved in both cases have been put on administrative leave.

“In both cases, with Bob Birarda in 2008 and Hubert Busby Jr. in 2011, after we went to the same Vancouver Whitecaps leadership and ownership for help, their response was to silence us, quietly investigate without even speaking to the victims, and fire the coaches without any flag or warning for other clubs,” the players’ statement reads. “Canada Soccer was also involved in the secret investigation of Bob Birarda and took no action to prevent him from coaching other players. As a result, these individuals returned to coaching vulnerable athletes for a good part of the last decade. Clubs, parents and players had no knowledge or warning of these coaches’ history because there was no system in place to flag misconduct and the Whitecaps and Canada Soccer were not transparent to the public about the reasons behind their departure.

“We welcome the investigation announced by the MLS into the Whitecaps’ role in the Birarda and Busby Jr. cases. While the MLS has hired a highly credible firm to conduct the investigation, it is important that the players affected have a say in its scope and mandate, including the failure to alert the public about the reasons for the dismissal of these coaches.”

The current Canadian Women’s National team players also called out the CSA to conduct a probe into the Birarda claims last month, and the country’s ruling soccer body agreed to do that. But the former Whitecaps players have asked that Rubin Thomlinson take over the CSA inquest, among other requests. They include:

“Canada Soccer and MLS agree to consult PFACan on the scope and mandate of the joint investigation into the Whitecaps and Canada Soccer, and immediately commit to making any final report public.

“The Vancouver Whitecaps and Canada Soccer agree to provide all relevant documentation to the investigation firm, including any non-disclosure or departure agreements signed with Birarda and Busby Jr.”

“Canada Soccer and MLS agree to provide PFACan with the preliminary findings of the joint investigation and afford us the opportunity to make representations on the final report’s findings and recommendations.”

“Vancouver Whitecaps, MLS and Canada Soccer commit that they will take appropriate action against anyone currently connected to the organizations who are found by the joint investigation to have failed in taking effective steps to stop the abusive behaviour of Bob Birarda and Hubert Busby Jr.”

“CONCACAF and FIFA both confirm that Victor Montagliani (current Head of CONCACAF and Vice President of FIFA and former Director of National Teams for Canada Soccer in 2008) will co-operate fully with the joint Canada Soccer and MLS investigation.”

“The Vancouver Whitecaps and Canada Soccer agree to provide funding for mental health services that any former player of Birarda or Busby Jr. may require for the period of at least one year.”

CONCACAF sought to clarify Montagliani’s role at the time of the first Birarda investigation in 2008, saying he was a non-executive board member of the CSA and was not responsible for the day-to-day operations or supervision of the federation or its national teams. Montagliani’s Linkedin profile lists him as “Vice-president; National Teams” from 2005-2012, at which point he assumed the CSA presidency. He was also the former president of B.C. Soccer.

Rubin is well-known in the legal profession for her work, and seen as a leader in the industry segment. She wrote a post for The Lawyer’s Daily two years ago on where the #MeToo movement was after it became a well-known term following the Harvey Weinstein trial.

“Over the last two years we have seen an exponential increase in the sexual harassment and violence investigations we do,” she writes. “That increase speaks to a major societal shift, a shift that becomes even more striking when we look at who is calling us and why. We have heard from large, iconic employers with thousands of employees; we have heard from employers who work in fields that have historically been dominated by men; we have heard from organizations that have a reputation of not creating the most ideal workplaces for their employees. There have been many days in the last two years when I have hung up the phone and thought, wow, who would have thought this organization would have called us about this issue?”

Is it safe to leave battery operated fairy lights on all night?

Totally safe to use, lighting fueled by batteries can be left on all night which makes them fantastic for working as night lights. Often children don’t want total darkness when trying to go to sleep, so leaving on some fairy lights that are powered by batteries can provide the perfect solution.

In respect to this, can I leave battery fairy lights on all night?

These battery operated led light strings have an on/off switch on the batter box. No worries even if the light string is left on all night. It is suggested that the light string be turned off when not in use to extend battery life. Be safe and use the battery operated LED string lights.

Also, can I leave LED lights on all night? Leaving your LED lights on all day isn’t quite as costly, but it’ll still cause a significant dent in your annual energy bill. 45 LED lights left on while you’re at work will cost you an extra $180 a year. That means, if you flip those switches off when you leave, you could save enough for an annual gym membership.

Also, are battery powered fairy lights safe?

Use LED lights that are battery powered. This type of fairy light can save energy, and many are just as bright as their mains-powered counterparts. They’re also safer, and their bulbs are less likely to get hot. The only downside is you can’t use them outside.

Are LED fairy lights a fire hazard?

And because they can get very hot, they are a fire hazard when placed in close proximity to combustible materials, such as trees. This is especially the case with real trees as they dry out. And as such, these lights are not recommended. Luckily, low voltage LED lights are now leading the way.

decoration as an art form. On the eve of the long-awaited holiday, the republic
transforms before our eyes. Streets light up with bright lights, fluffy beauties
delight with their outfits, New Year’s fairs beckon with objects of magic.
Despite the pandemic, people create their own mood, make efforts,
to decorate the adjoining areas. And how is the New Year celebrated in Alagir? – v
the material of the State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company “Alania”.

    Alana lives in the village
Tsalikovo. I came with my friends to the central alley of Alagir specifically to
look at the Christmas tree. For girls, this is already a tradition. They say in this
the year there is not enough snow.

According to forecasts of weather forecasters,
the situation is fixable. But according to the ideas of the Alagir administration this year
the city will shine with lights. The main beauty is already being decorated with balls and garlands.
There will be no holiday due to the pandemic, as well as a solemn fireworks. But to create
the experts decided the mood, in spite of everything.

    Earned here
Christmas Fair. We attracted not only local entrepreneurs, but also
representatives of neighboring republics. Christmas tree bazaars have already opened in the neighborhood.

Until the new year is not
so much time. Alagir is already preparing to try on a festive
decoration. But, as in any fairy tale, the magic here begins with the onset
darkness. Just one movement – and the city alley turns into a kingdom
    colored lights.

Here are both fairy-tale heroes and
a magic clock that ticks off the time so rapidly. And every passer-by wants
go under the rainbow arch. For Alagir, decorating the city is a good tradition.
For the first time, the regional center shone so thoroughly back in 2017. The coronavirus introduced its own
adjustments, but residents and guests were imbued with New Year’s mood.

There will be a holiday in Alagir.
Perhaps without city celebrations and the usual fireworks. But always with
New Year’s mood. The administration staff will definitely take care of this.

The grand opening of the main New Year’s beauty took place in Uglegorsk

On December 21, on the city square of Uglegorsk, a solemn ceremony of opening the main New Year’s beauty tree was held.

Traditionally, the holiday began with a procession of Father Frosts and Snow Maidens along the central street of the city – Pobeda. It is worth noting that the main fairy-tale characters of the New Year arrived not only from Uglegorsk and Shakhtersk, but also from Porechye, Nikolsky and Krasnopolye.

Before lighting the lights on the Christmas tree, an essential attribute of the New Year celebration, and turning on the festive illumination on the square, the deputy head of the district administration Elena Organova addressed the audience:

    – Dear residents and guests of the city! Despite the fact that the temperature outside is freezing, we are holding a very warm event that everyone loves – the opening of the regional Christmas tree. And the lights on the tree, like the fire in general, are a symbol of the future: warmth, joy and comfort, a symbol of happiness and new achievements, ”said Elena Aleksandrovna.- Happy New Year to everyone. May he bring happiness, health and well-being to everyone!

After these words at a friendly expense: “One, two, three! Come on, Christmas tree, burn, give joy to all of us! ” bright lights flashed on the New Year’s beauty. And then, to the applause of the audience, the main Santa Claus was raised (on an aerial platform) up and showered them with sparkles, tinsel, and confetti from a height.

At this time, numerous Santa Clauses and Snow Maidens distributed sweets to the guests of the holiday, taking out treats from large bags. The bright team of Santa Claus and Snegurochka from the Eastern Mining Company also generously gave goodies to the children. So everyone got sweet gifts.
