types of curtain hooks

Regardless of your choice of curtains, you also need to consider how you’re going to hang them. This is where curtain hooks and tie-backs come into consideration.

There are so many types of curtain hooks though, reflecting the various creative ways in which you can attach these window treatments. Which hook to choose would depend on your choice of drapes. Size and weight will determine the method you would need to apply while design considerations come into play in your choice of the hook too.

Feeling overwhelmed by choice? Let us help by quickly reviewing the different types of hooks, rods and tie backs out there.

Hooks and Rods

Let us begin this tour by describing the basic elements.

1. Rods and Rod Holders

Rod hardware is an important part of most window treatments. Most curtain rods are not hidden out of sight, which is why it is important to pick a style that compliments your room’s décor. There are various styles of curtain rods available, including cable rods, rods with finials, return rods, tension rods, and even side wall mounts.

2. Clip Rings

Clip Rings have grown to become one of the preferred methods for hanging curtains. They are inserted into the drapery panel in such a way that they slide over the rod. The curtains are then secured individually on to the rings with hooks. This method makes it possible to add a few more inches to the length of your panel since the clips allow the fabric to hang below the rod.

3. Curtain Hooks

Curtain hooks can be used in most parts of the home, but they are primarily used in bathrooms because of how easy it is to install and remove them. Due to the humid nature of bathrooms, curtain hooks should naturally resist corrosion and rust. To avoid this, they are usually made of durable material that also manages to look stylish, study, and strong.

These hooks are perfect for bathroom decors. They are fished with a silvery chrome luster that should instantly transform your bathroom’s appearance. Furthermore, the chrome finish makes the rod rust-free and durable enough to last for a long time. It is highly durable and can be cleaned with a wet cloth. The hooks easily slide along the length of the rod and are very easy to clean.

We did have an issue with the fragility of the rods, which can easily break should they come crashing down from the rod.

These fabric tiebacks will add a completely new look to your room thanks to their lovely blue appearance. They are made out of acrylic and tassel that should suffice for daily usage.

So, which will you use?

People have used curtains to dress window for centuries. Since then, curtains have evolved from simply hanging on the walls to help keep rooms cool and even compliment the numerous interior designs we see today. A curtain can definitely play a stylistic role in your room. Major components of a curtain include the type of fabric, design or motif, and the use of appropriate curtain headings to support the weight of the fabric.

In the case of extra massive curtains, you will need a substantial track or pole to hang them from. In the case of sheers and hand voiles, it is possible to hang them from rudimentary tools such as tension wire and narrow diameter poles.

The final choice is up to you. Just make sure to put safety first and make sure the hooks you choose can support the weight of your drapes.

A Complete Guide to Hanging and Fitting Curtains

Please see our ‘everything you need to know about tracks and poles’ section for advice on these products.

Here is our guide to hanging pencil pleat curtains, please see the index on the left for instructions on other types of curtains and Roman Blinds.

So your eagerly awaited new curtains have arrived at last! But what if you’ve never hung a pair of curtains before?! Don’t panic: here is your indispensable guide to hanging your curtains like a professional!

Firstly you need to unpack your curtains. They’re probably pretty creased from sitting inside the packaging. Some customers are happy to hang the curtains and let the crease drop out over time. Others like to give them a gentle press. Either way works well but please read the pressing instructions on the label– some fabrics have special finishes (ie flocking or metallic details) that don’t respond well to the heat of an iron.

You’ll find a strip of curtain tape stitched across the top of your curtain. This heading tape will usually have three rows of string threaded through it. These strings have to be pulled in order to achieve the gathered look that you’re aiming for.

But STOP! Before you go any further you need to tie a knot in one end of all of the strings or they might just come all the way through and out the other side. Sometimes the ends have been machine stitched down, but if you can, it’s always a good idea to tie them off on the outside edge of each curtain.

Now you can pull up the strings! Take hold of all three and try to pull them evenly. You’re aiming for each curtain to be pulled up to the width of half of your track plus a centimeter or two for overlap.

Once you’ve done this it’s a good idea to offer them up to the window to check that they are the right size, before tying off the strings. It’s also a good idea to use a slipknot for this end so that you can adjust them or undo them if you’re able to wash the curtains. Then distribute the gathering evenly across the width of the curtain.

Now that the curtains are pulled up you need to put in the curtain hooks. In most pencil pleat heading tapes there are three rows of pockets to choose from. Which pocket you choose depends on how long or short you would like your curtains to be. The benefit of having three options is that your curtains can be adjusted easily by 1 to 3 inches. Hooks should be placed in the heading tape every four pockets or so, depending on how many runners or hooks you have. Standard tracks don’t tend to be very generously supplied with runners or hooks so it’s always a good idea to buy an extra packet or two.

Your curtains are now ready to be hung! Just remember to have a friend or relative to hold the ladder for you. Make sure you support the full weight of the curtain to avoid those carefully distributed pleats from being pulled out of shape.

A professional fitter would then pleat the curtains into a concertina form by pushing the fabric gently back in between the curtain hooks. They would then tie the pleats in place loosely with some scrap strips of fabric and leave overnight. This step can be time-consuming but is worth it in the long run as your curtains will ‘remember’ this pleating and return to form each time they are opened.

Sit back and admire your beautiful curtains!

How to Hang Pinch Pleat Curtains

Hand made Pinch Pleat curtains hang beautifully and are undeniably elegant, but require a different kind of hook to those that are used with pencil pleat curtains.  In fact, if you’ve never seen or hung pinch pleat curtains before, the prospect of stabbing a sharp hook into your brand new curtains can seem daunting and the whole task rather overwhelming.

But don’t be put off: They are simple to use and once you’ve got over the hurdle of making your first stab, you’ll be well on the way. Bear in mind that in our experience no one has ever ruined his or her curtains. Just follow these easy steps for stress free curtain hanging:

Lay the top of the curtain face down, on a clean,flat surface.

Then, with the lined side of the curtain facing you, slide the sharp point of the pin hook up and under the stitches in the back of the pleat until the point is hidden and only the hook end is visible.

Make sure that the hook is as close to the top of the curtain as possible whilst still being hidden, so that the curtains can hang below the track or pole. This enables the curtains to concertina or stack back neatly.

It is sensible to insert a few hooks, and then whilst supporting the rest of the curtain, hang the curtain from the pole or track to check that you are happy with the length. There is always a little room to adjust here in order to make sure the curtain is the right drop.  Do bear in mind that the curtains may ‘drop’ by up to a centimetre when they’ve been hanging for a week or so, due to the weight of the curtain.

When you are happy with the position of the hooks, it is a good idea to measure from the top of the curtain to the insertion point and make a small pencil mark on each pleat. This will ensure that the curtain hangs evenly and will prevent the annoyance of hooks popping out when hung.

Insert a pin in every pleat, adding one pin to the outside edge of each curtain, and one to the inside edge of one curtain. The other edge should be left free so that it can overlap the other curtain, ensuring there is no gap between the two.

Before you hang the curtains count how many pin hooks you have on the curtain and make sure you have the corresponding number of rings on your pole or runners on your track.

Supporting the curtain, each hook can then be inserted into the eye on the bottom of your curtain ring, starting from the middle, working outwards. This ensures that if you have the wrong number of hooks or rings, you can remove the extras without taking the whole curtain down again! Make sure you use the end stop or the last ring between the finial and bracket.

Once the curtains are hanging, draw them back fully and then, from the top of the curtain, push the fabric back, in between the pinch pleats. Run your hand down the length of the curtain and press the pleats.

For a truly beautiful finish, tie three strips of lining or fabric around each curtain. They should hold the folds in position but they should not be so tight that they leave indentation marks.Leave for 2 or 3 days then remove the ties and draw the curtains. They should then hang in the set folds.

Drapery Pin Hooks, They’re Not Just For Your Grandma’s Curtains

HOOK, LINE, AND SINKER

A lot of curtain panels available these days have sewn-in grommets for easy hanging. That’s great if you like the look, and we’ve got lots of carriers and curtain tracks that work well with grommets. But there are a lot of traditionalists out there, and those who are embracing the retro look. So if you find yourself with a set of curtains sans grommets, or if you want to make your own curtains out of a fabric you love, you will have to embrace on oldie-but-a-goodie in the drapery hardware world: the drapery pin hook. These simple, inexpensive pieces of bent stainless steel are still rock stars in the professional draperies world, and we are going to tell you how to use them at home.

HOOK UP

A recent article on SFGate.com discusses how to use drapery pin hooks with a standard rod-pocket curtain panel. We don’t advocate the use of rods, but they are right on the money about pleats and hooks. One of the simplest ways to put hooks onto a curtain panel of any kind is to simply pin through the top of the curtain header.  There are pieces of fabric constructing the top hem, put your pin hook through the back piece of fabric only, and it will conceal the hook and will not be visible.  This system is great for non-pleated curtains.

PICK YOUR PLEATS

If you want traditional pleats, our customer service department can custom make them on your favorite piece of fabric, or we can talk you through how to do it yourself. A traditional do-it-yourself way is to attach a length of buckram to the top of your piece of fabric-soon-to-be-curtain. The buckram stiffens the fabric sufficiently that pleats (single, double, French, etc.) and can be sewn in (by hand or machine). The sharp part of a 4138 Drapery Pin Hook is placed into the seam of the pleat, and, thanks to physics, securely keeps the curtain on the curtain track (via a carrier). This stainless steel hook has been the industry standard for years and will last just this side of forever without leaving a rust stain on your curtain. Our 4146 Drapery Pin Hook is just as reliable but is best for small jobs like sheer curtains or small kitchen windows.

RIKTIG Curtain hook – IKEA

These are the loveliest curtainNicoleThese are the loveliest curtain hooks I have ever bought5

Fast and simpleGlenI mounted my IKEA tracks one afternoon at six doors, and the next afternoon my husband hung all of the drapery, so we have instant privacy in our new home.5

Drapery HooksGailWorked well. However directions not very clear.5

Do not like thesePilarThese are hard to find. That being said you can find better at a similar price point. They are too wide and and unforgiving. I dread cleaning my curtains.2

Best everSusanEasy to use. More than enough. Looks great5

Works well with Ikea curtainshyp19Unfortunately incompatible with other brands, also rather difficult to apply through the various loops in the Ikea curtains. Works as expected otherwise.4

Good valuesklikI bought these for use with the TIBAST curtains on VIDGA sliders and 3-track rail. They’re basic curtain hooks: two hooks slide into the header tape and the hanger attaches to your hanging system. I also tried them with other header tapes and they work great.5

Secure way to hang Ikea curtainsBritRuSuch a great, secure way to hang Ikea curtains, when used with curtain eyelet rings. I found the common curtain ring clips a little flimsy for my long (and somewhat heavy) Ikea Ritva curtains, so when I happened upon these curtain hooks on a video tutorial, I was excited. We’ve had them hung up for a couple days now, and couldn’t be happier. Solid, quality product for an unbeatable price! Comes in a 20 pack, and you’ll use 9-10 hooks per curtain panel, so one pack works for one pair of curtains.5

the hooks worked greatCM49I couldn’t have done it without the hooks, I had to be careful when hanging the curtains that the hooks didn’t slip out, but it wasn’t a big deal4

So easy to usemystiryuss wyldWas pretty sure these would be difficult to install so I’d end up with a funky work around, but not at all. Was so easy! The first one was challenging for about 10 seconds, then, looking at the drawing, I got it it started and then it practically installed itself. I’ve never had this kind of curtain before, now I am so happy with them!5

8 Types of Shower Curtain Connectors

Bathroom • Matt • 0 Comments

While glass walled showers are all the rage these days, many bathrooms still require the use of a shower curtain. Particularly if you call a tub-shower combo your own, there are preciously few alternatives to the old classic.

While making use of a rod to suspend your shower curtain of choice seems to be a very boring solution from a bathroom-design point of view, there are quite a few choices you have at your disposal to add your personal touch to the system.

You will need to employ some type of connectors in order to hang your shower curtain, and this is where the option to design and customise comes into play.

Basically, you have two types of connectors to chose from: rings and hooks.

Curtain rings, as their name suggests, are a type of connector that encircles the curtain rod completely. Some shower curtains come with pre-attached rings, other types allow for using your own set.

Many of us still remember the oftentimes stuck or jamming curtain rings of our youth, resulting in a battle of wills before even the first drop of water hit our skins. Those problems usually were the result of cheap plastic rubbing against even cheaper plastic, the situation not helped along by the moist atmosphere. These days, shower curtain rods often come in metal, or are at least coated with a metallic surface substance that allows for better slippage. Additionally, you can optimise the handling by investing in rings with incorporated roller glides. This option tends to be a bit more pricey, but they easily make up for it with ease of use and durability.

Curtain hooks, on the other hand, are simply hooked over the supporting rod and typically are the more stylish choice. Many curtain hooks come with stylishly adorned clips that are used for fixing the curtain to the hook. These clips can be as simple or extravagant as you want, and typically you won’t have any problems finding the right decorations to perfectly underscore your bathroom’s design theme.

There is an additional third choice of connector type, which is basically a combination of both ring and hook. In this option, the hook, or clip is attached to a ring, which in turn secures the curtain to your shower rod.

The range of choice for shower curtain connectors is incredible, as a short stint at your local home supply retailer will undoubtedly show you. But don’t fret!  We have done the research for you and have collected the most popular types of shower curtain connectors below.  Bear in mind, though, that this is but a small selection of types and designs, and can only give you a basic overview, but in no way represents all styles available!

Classic Rings

Photo: Robert Green

The most basic and traditional style of shower curtain connectors.

They typically come in either plastic or stainless steel, and have some sort of claps or twist closure allowing for a small opening to insert the curtain.

The simple fact that each ring is a closed system is the biggest advantage of this classic connector type. No matter how quickly or forcefully you tug on the shower curtain, there is little to no possibility of the curtain coming lose.

On the downside, rings, and plastic rings in particular, can have difficulties with a seamless, jerk-free glide. In extreme cases, this can result in tears in the fabric, or -seldom, but not unheard of- parts of the curtain ripping free from the rings.

Using stainless-steel/metallic options for both rod and rings minimises the chance for jerking and stalling. Investing in robust curtain fabrics helps to ensure integrity as well.

Rings with Roller Glides

Photo: Crate&Barrel

Roller glides, basically, are tiny balls anchored around the top part of a curtain ring that help to make moving each individual ring easier.

As you can see in our example picture, curtain rings do not necessarily come in an actual circular form. Indeed, they seldom do when enhanced with roller glides. In order to prevent the top-heavy rings to slip down, most curtain rings with added gliders taper down into an elongated oval-ish shape for added stability.

Rings with roller glides are the perfect option if you want the resilience of curtain rings, but are too impatient to deal with the occasional jamming. They typically are the more pricey option, but their ease of handling more than makes up for the slightly elevated price. Invest in a durable stainless-steel option, and enjoy the added comfort for years to come!

Basic Hook

Photo: SlipX Solutions

Hooks are the more stylish, and not coincidentally more versatile option of shower curtain connectors.

Essentially, hooks do just what their name hints at – they are hooked over the curtain rod. As you can imagine, this type of fixing the curtain to the rod is a bit more unstable than using rings. Hooks, generally, do not hold up too well in face of excessive force. When there’s too much jerking, there’s a good chance that one or more hooks will jump free from the rod. The same goes for too quick movement of the curtain as well.

However, when used sensibly, hooks definitely are the better, more aesthetically pleasing option, and offer you a wide range of types and designs.

There are basically two ways in which the shower curtain can be affixed to the hook: via a clip, or by threading the hook through an eyelet in the fabric, whereby the curtain is held in place by some sort of stopper or ornament at the base of the hook.

Additionally, you have the choice between single and double hooked. If you want to hang a liner behind your shower curtain, the double hooked solutions are the best way to go. This option, also, offers quite a bit more stability, since the weight of the curtain(s) is distributed on both sides of the hook, holding it down in the process.

Hook with Roller Glides

Photo: Orchard Supply Hardware

Just as with shower curtain rings, some hooks come equipped with rollers that allow for a greater ease of movement.

This variation can be found on all types and styles of hooks, so don’t feel like you need to limit your choice when you want to opt for more ease of motion.

Hook with Stopper

Photo: HomesFeed

This is the most basic form of hooks.

The lower end of the hook flares out into a bigger shape (typically something spherical) that serves to stop your shower curtain from slipping off the hook.

Many of these stoppered hooks are made out of stainless steel or other metals, giving an overall unified impression.

There are, however, more elaborate forms that have acrylic or glass baubles attached to the hook itself. Those serve very well to add colour to your bathroom and generally hold up to strain and the damp environment equally well as their metal counterparts.

Hook with Ornament

Photo: Zulili

In all honesty, once you go the ornament way, the sky’s the limit!

The hook and ornament combo can and does come in endless shapes, materials, and sizes.

At its most basic, the end of the hook flattens out to a disc, which may or may not be adorned with a flat stone, etchings, or other restrained embellishments. At its wildest… well, let’s just say that we have seen everything from (comparatively tame) seashell collections to all out Christmas ornaments made of ribbons, mistletoe, and baubles…

If it fits your bathroom, your shower curtain, your mood, your style, or your brand of humour, we say: go for it!

Hook with Clip

The hook and clip combo is the perfect solution if you want to cut back on the struggle to find shower curtains that come with the right sized perforations to fit your rings or hooks, or tend to frequently change your shower curtain.

This option is very flexible, but comes with the downside that the clips tend to have trouble to withstand a lot of tugging. If you have lively children holding on to the curtain, for example, this might not be the ideal solution for you.

Ring and Hook/Clip Combo

If you want the best of both worlds, a ring – hook/clip combination is your best course of action.

There are a variety of combinations to chose from, giving you the opportunity to find the best solution for your bathroom!

90,000 kinds for curtain rods and curtains or curtains, plastic and metal, how to hang properly

The design of a window opening cannot be realized without the use of a variety of fittings. Curtain fasteners are an important part of it. Modern options for fixing curtains on the cornice are very diverse, they all have their positive and negative sides. Among them, the most common are universal hooks, which are very easy to use.These fittings have aesthetic and functional qualities. The hooks ensure the fastening and movement of the canvases along the cornice and can act as independent decorative elements.

What are they called?

The elements responsible for attaching the curtains to the cornice are called hooks.They are the cheapest option for fixing the curtain to the eaves. They are easy to attach and easy to use. These attachments are suitable for hanging lightweight fabric.

They can be used with any flat eaves structure, however, it is necessary to fix them on both sides, so they will not fall out during operation.

There is another type of decorative fittings – special holders, which are used together with curtain hooks, fixing the curtain fabric on the sides, slightly opening the window and forming beautiful folds.

Features

Hooks for fixing curtains on the cornice are sold individually, but sometimes you can see a special curtain tape with hooks strung on it on sale. The correct choice of textile accessories allows you to add harmony to the room, fill it with coziness and comfort.

The design of a window opening cannot be realized without the use of a variety of fittings.

There are many types of curtains and curtains – with heavy drapery, multi-layer or airy, roll or classic. Therefore, today, more than ever, the question is relevant – what are the curtains hanging on.

Window decoration with curtains

The decor of the window opening cannot be decorated without the use of various fittings. Modern methods of fixing the canvas on the cornice are extremely diverse – all elements have advantages and disadvantages. So what is the name of the item and what are the curtains hung on?

Modern options for fixing curtains on the cornice are very diverse.

The item that is responsible for fixing the curtain to the cornice is called a hook. These are the most budgetary options for fasteners, they are easy to use. Such elements are ideal for fixing thin and light matter.

The most common universal hooks are very easy to use. These fittings have aesthetic and functional qualities.

INTERESTING! Curtain hooks can be used for flat curtain rod. At the same time, it is important to secure them with high quality on both sides, so that they will not fall out during use.

There is one more kind of decorative elements – special holders. They are used together with curtain hooks, fix the curtain on both sides. This creates a beautiful drapery.

Holders for curtains allow you to make the appearance of the window opening more stylish and original.

Fasteners are sold separately, that is, 1 piece, sometimes you can find a curtain tape on which hooks are placed. Such an accessory can be easily sewn to the canvas.All clamps are securely attached to the string, do not slip. They are characterized by versatility, as they are ideal for all existing types of cornice.

Hooks are often sold one by one or in dozens, but you can always purchase a ready-made tape with hooks already attached to it.

It is necessary to select decorative fittings on the basis that they will last a long time and reliably. The options depend on the design of the cornice, for example, hooks with rings are suitable for round ones, and plastic hooks with a wheel are suitable for baguette ones.In most cases, such elements are not noticeable, therefore they do not affect the overall impression of the interior.

Modern curtain rods are not inferior in importance to decoration and furnishings.

By design, they are divided into these types of hooks for curtains.

  1. Decorative view. Designed to decorate the entire window composition, as they have an interesting design and attractive appearance.
  2. Hidden type. They are made from various materials – plastic, steel and other varieties.The main characteristic is to hide the mount from prying eyes, most often it hides under a decorative console or in the folds of a curtain.
  3. Transitional products. These fasteners help to connect hinges, eyelets, clips and curtain rod. At the bottom of them there is a clothespin that fixes the matter, and at the top there is a hook with a ring.
  4. Basic. These are independent clamps that do not require additional elements;
  5. Closed variation. They snap into place on the eaves structure, and during operation they can be easily transported along the bar.
  6. Open. The fittings easily fit on the cornice, they are easily put on the eyelets on the curtains or curtains. If necessary, you can remove the canvas without dismantling the cornice.

    We need to figure out what are the hooks for curtains, heavy curtains and thin transparent curtains in the bathroom.

Hook varieties

Finding exquisite fittings for your living space is not easy. Expensive and exclusive curtains can ruin the design if the wrong clips were purchased.In order to choose and purchase the ideal options, you need to figure out what other hooks for curtains and curtains are.

  • Plastic and metal products. Plastic curtain hooks are inexpensive and high quality options. But they are not suitable for voluminous and heavy fabrics, as well as for a curtain look. Their advantage is silent movement along the cornice in the process of pulling the curtain. Metal can be represented by aluminum and brass. If you buy a low-quality product, there is a possibility of dark stains and traces of rust on the fabric.

These accessories are great for heavy canvas and layered looks.

  • Hooks for lightweight tulle. In most cases, this is a colorless plastic that is not visible under the transparent tulle. A feature of the product is that it withstands exceptionally light and airy materials, since thin plastic is used.

Most of the elements made of such material are hidden, because they do not have much appeal.

  • Articles containing clips or clips. The most common combination of plastic and iron base. The clamping structure is represented by two planes. They hold the curtain in place, but are not designed for heavy weight.

    There is a huge selection of clamps on the market, for example, all steel, with teeth, “crabs” (“crocodiles”).

  • Curtain rod hooks for metal base curtains are more expensive but can last for years.The products are not capable of being damaged during active work, and they also fix the fabric cloth with high quality.

The strength of such a product is significantly higher than that of plastic, but the actual service life is determined by the specific material.

How to hang curtains on hooks?

You can hang the curtain fabric in different ways, the main thing is to take into account the type of structure. There are such types of curtain rods for the use of hooks:

  • forged;
  • ceiling;
  • 90,023 strings;

  • aluminum;
  • 90,023 slats of different designs.In this case, the hostess will need to use curtain hooks and curtains of the old or new model;

  • bay windows.

Curtain hooks are the most popular method of fixing curtains to the ceiling. Such products are attached to the wheel or act as an independent element.

Fittings can be manufactured from brass, aluminum, steel.

Most often there is a combination with profile cornices. They are characterized by wall and ceiling fixing. Can also be used for string designs and round patterns.

Large thick rings with metal hooks are recommended for heavy fabrics.

Fastening the canvas with a tape occurs without much difficulty. A ribbon is sewn along the edge of the curtain, containing two rows of dense and strong threads. These will be the eyelets, the hooks for the curtain tapes are hidden behind the folds. As the braid pulls the canvas together, nice vertical folds will be created.

With such a solution to the issue of fixing the curtains, you greatly facilitate your task, i.e.because you do not have to make loops.

Ceiling types of cornices are presented in the form of a bus. For such models, hooks with the additional presence of rollers are suitable. This method is the only one possible for this type of construction.

Loops will not jump off hooks of this type, so you can not be afraid to move the curtains in the right direction.

If you want to securely fasten decorative fittings, it is better to sew them to the fabric. Subsequently, the web must be cleaned along with the hooks.The plastic component will not be damaged, since water has no negative effect on this material. We do not recommend attaching metal accessories to the fabric, because when exposed to liquid, rust may appear on them, which will transfer to the fabric.

To wash these curtains, you will not need to pull the string, but it will take a long time to hang the curtains one loop at a time.

For a beautiful drapery, it is necessary to adhere to the correct distance between the elements.This step should be about ten centimeters. From experience – the greater the distance, the more expressive the fold will turn out. Conversely, smaller steps can form a narrower vertical fold.

If the curtains are fixed directly behind the cornice, the hooks should be lightweight and slide well.

ATTENTION! It is not recommended to hang the curtain on holders, which are extremely rare. The matter will look ugly and sloppy.

Interesting features of correct fixation.

  1. For an arched window, you can fix the curtain and curtain without a cornice. This method is very popular with modern interior designers. To do this, you need to install decorative hooks over the oval opening at the correct distance from each other. Further, the loops on the canvas are fixed on fasteners at different heights. This option is characterized by reliability, therefore it will withstand even heavy multilayer materials. Thus, the hostess does not need to think about the curtain profile.
  2. The number of decorative fittings is calculated based on the optimal distance and parameters of the cornice under the stretch ceiling.We also advise you to take into account the weight and quality of the curtain or curtain fabric.

    Heavy curtains require an increased number of fasteners.

  3. It is possible to evenly hang the canvas with preliminary placement on the hooks. After that, it is possible to place on the cornice, for example, a ceiling view.
  4. We recommend that you fix the center and edges of the curtain first. Then divide the sections into two equal parts and place the fastener. In this way, the retainers can be applied evenly along the length of the fabric.After that, fasten the edges of the curtain rod so that the fittings do not slip during the curtain process.

    Metal-plastic is the most suitable material in terms of cost and quality.

The whole truth about the hooks for curtains: plastic, metal

The choice of curtains seems easy only at first glance. Upon closer examination, it becomes clear that many factors must be taken into account: from the color and pattern of the wallpaper, to the feature of decorative accessories.

Curtains on hooks

Curtains cannot be hidden either from the inside or from the outside of the room, therefore it is recommended to treat them responsibly, as well as to the accessories, without which it is impossible to create a complete composition.

Features of curtain hooks

After choosing the textiles, it is time to attach the curtains. This is the moment on which the visualization of the window opening depends.

The following types of curtain fastening are known: with the help of eyelets, fabric loops, drawstrings, strings, braids, rings, clothespins (crabs) and hooks.Different types of fasteners correspond to a specific type of fabric and curtain rod. Thus, Roman shades cannot be hung on hooks or eyelets, and curtains with hooks cannot be secured with a drawstring.

Curtain hooks are considered the cheapest method of fastening the curtain. It is not difficult to work with them, they are easy to operate, that is why they are so fond of consumers. Curtain hooks are designed for light and medium-weight fabrics. For heavy curtains, it is advisable to choose curtain rings, hinges or eyelets.

It is important not to forget that this type of fastening requires fixing the cornice on both sides so that the elements do not fall out. Such products are easy to string on any flat cornice.

The main advantage is that they can be freely and easily moved along the cornice in all directions. If it is necessary to wash, the fabric can be easily removed, and if the elements break, they can be easily replaced with new ones.

The disadvantage of this type of fastening is the monotony and scrupulousness of the process of sewing on elements.

Hooks

Fastening method

Hooks are attached to the loops of the tape sewn to the uppermost edge of the curtain. Through trial and error, the curtain designers came to the conclusion that the optimal distance between the parts should be equal to 100 mm. Taking this into account, the number of hooks for curtains is calculated.

Classification

Curtain and curtain hooks are made of the following materials:

  • metal;
  • plastic;
  • combined material (metal-plastic).

The cheapest are plastic items that can withstand light to medium fabrics. Another advantage of these is noiselessness during operation. However, over time, plastic curtain hooks will wear out and lose their shape, which will negatively affect the overall composition. This is due to the fact that the deformation of the products leads to their sliding off the curtain hinges.

Metal curtain hooks are made of brass or aluminum (sometimes steel). This method of fastening is considered the most reliable, but noisier compared to plastic.When choosing metal parts, it is important that the material is of high quality, otherwise over time it will be covered with corrosion and a dull bloom.

The ideal option is considered to be the choice of products made from a combined material that has taken on the best of plastic and metal.

According to design features, hooks are:

  1. Decorative.
  2. Hidden.
  3. Transitional and basic.
  4. Closed and open.

Decorative are used extremely rarely, they are fasteners with an attractive design. Most often, standard plastic or metal hooks are used, hidden during the fastening process in fabric folds or under the visible part of the console.

Hook clips often act as a link between hinges, eyelets, curtain clips and eaves, or as a customary piece.

Closed ones allow easy movement of textiles along the cornice, fabric loops do not fall off them.Open products are distinguished by the fact that it is easier to attach curtain loops to them, and it is not necessary to remove the string for washing.

In addition to the main group of hooks used for attaching curtains to the cornice, there is another type designed for fixing curtains using grabs. Such details work by pulling the fabric to the side and keeping the folds rounded. Elements are often invisible in the overall composition, which focuses not on accessories, but on the canvas itself. According to some design ideas, different decors are attached to their surface: flowers, ornaments, animal heads, etc.n. Products are mounted in the wall with self-tapping screws or special brackets. They are made of durable, reliable materials and often overlap with the decor of the cornice (in this case, the clips are included in the set).

In the case when the curtains are assembled by means of clamps, the option with the use of purl clamps is possible. If you use hooks for curtains in the bathroom, the best choice is plastic that is not subject to corrosion and is not afraid of moisture.

Option for the bathroom

Nuances of choice

Hooks must be selected in such a way that they serve for many years, do not break, while reliably holding the textile composition.

The types of cornices must be taken into account. So, for round curtain rods, elements that need to be attached to the curtain rings are ideal, and plastic hooks designed for curtains with rollers are suitable for running consoles.

It is important to understand that, despite the versatility, curtain hooks may not match the design idea in style. Pettiness and economy on decoration details can ruin the overall picture!

During the selection process, you should pay attention to the following points:

  1. type of cornice;
  2. eyelet size;
  3. stylistic direction;
  4. frequency of use of curtains;
  5. web weight.

If there is a need to hang light curtains or curtains on the cornice, which will then be stationary, hooks are the best solution.

Expert advice: do not underestimate the interior importance of the composition of curtains and curtains. It is advisable to change the hooks every 2 years – this will prevent them from deforming and spoiling the look.

Curtain rod with and without hook caps

Hooks can be used to install curtains and curtains on all types of curtain rods.

Types of hooks

For hanging curtain fabrics, basic, used independently, and transitional types of hooks are used, which are an intermediate link between the cornice and curtain elements (eyelets, loops, etc.). Most often, transitional models are used to fix curtains on rings hung on rods.

Transitional hooks for cornices

For each type of cornices, different types of hooks are used.There are several options for products depending on the material from which they are made.

Hardware material
  1. Plastic hooks. These parts are the cheapest and simplest. Usually they are

placed out of sight. Plastic mounts allow the curtains to be silently opened. But for heavy curtains, they will not work. This material is convenient when you want to wash your curtains without removing the hooks. Immunity to moisture in this case will be very useful.

Rings with hooks for curtains made of plastic

Plastic hooks for curtains are available in various shapes (options are shown in the photo).

Products do not differ in great durability, easily break down if handled carelessly and deform during operation, but usually there is a certain supply of such parts and there are no problems with replacing a broken element. In addition, they are installed quickly enough.

  1. Metal fixings. Hooks made of metal are the most durable.They can be used to secure the heaviest curtains. The material for the manufacture of fittings can be alloys of various metals. Aluminum, brass and steel fixtures are produced.

Steel products are the strongest. However, they can corrode, so their use should be treated with caution when assessing the humidity level in the room.

Aluminum clips – less durable, but moisture resistant and cheap enough. Brass hooks look very attractive.

Brass cornice with hooks

Fasteners can be painted in various colors. Some people do not like the excessive noise of curtain structures during the movement of the canvases along the eaves strip. The price of such models exceeds the cost of plastic products. But, which is an undoubted advantage, there are many options for decorating openings.

  1. Composite materials – metal-plastic.

This type of fittings is one of the most durable and unaffected products.They are as quiet as plastic ones, but unlike the latter, they are not subject to deformation during the entire period of use.

Appearance

Hooks can be hidden when they are fixed in such a way that they are not visible behind the cornice or material, as well as decorative. Hidden products are usually made of plastic and are small in size.

Their main purpose is to provide reliable fastening of the fabric and easy movement of the cloths. Fasteners are most often hidden behind a cornice bar or curtain fabrics.

Curtains fixed on hidden hooks

Often a special tape is used for the hidden installation of curtains. With this type of fastening, the hooks will be completely invisible. Using the curtain tape, it is easy to install the curtains on a string cornice or on a bar with hanging rings.

Hooks fixed on the curtain tape

Decorative models are made in various, sometimes the most bizarre forms and should decorate the entire structure, being one of the elements of the room decor.

Important! The fittings may not be conspicuous at all, which allows you to focus on the appearance of textiles, or may act as an interior decoration itself.At the same time, the outer part of the hooks can be decorated with various figures, patterns, and other interesting elements.

Lock type

For attaching curtains, closed types of hooks that snap into the cornice and open models are used, on which it is easier to hang curtains and remove them as needed. But the advantage of closed products is that when moving the fabric, there is no need to be afraid of the loops slipping off.

Closed plastic fittings

Hooks for fastening without curtain rod

Curtains can be hung over a door or window without installing a curtain rod.Such designs look very decorative and elegant. This method of installation is especially convenient for openings with a non-standard shape.

To hang curtains in this way, special elements must be provided on them, for example, eyelets. The structures have one drawback – they cannot be moved apart. Therefore, in order to wash the window, you will have to completely remove the curtain.

Hooks for grabbing cloths

Often, when decorating windows or doors, a technique is used when the curtains in the extended state are collected and fixed on the wall.To hold the canvases, a suspension is used, which is made of ribbons, braid, cord, strips of fabric, beads, various types of decorative details.

Hooks are used to secure the hooks on the walls and to fix the assembled curtains. Curtain hanger hooks can be made of metal or composite. Plastic models will not always be able to withstand such a load.

Curtains with tie-backs look very stylish and original. They add a special decorative effect to the design of the room.Usually this technique is used when curtains do not twitch too often.

The design of the hooks should be in harmony with curtains and cornice elements. Usually these products are equipped with holes for mounting, and the kit includes hardware.

Before attaching the curtain hook, it is important to correctly determine the installation point, taking into account the dimensions of the room, the size of the window, the opening system and the length of the curtains.

Usually there are several ways of attaching the hook for catching:

  • Flush with the window sill.The most common option for providing a sufficient amount of sunlight in the room.

Placement of the pick-up on the level with the window sill

  • Above the window sill, at a distance of 2/3 of the room height from the floor. The method is most often used for placement of medium-weight materials.
  • Slightly below the windowsill (about 20-30 cm). This method of attaching a curtain hook is ideal for hanging heavy curtains. As a rule, such an arrangement of the pick-up is used in rooms where it is required to create a secluded atmosphere and darken the room.For example, in bedrooms, offices or a library.

This moment in the installation of curtains is quite significant, since the level of fastening of the suspension largely determines the appearance of the room. The best way is to go the simpler route by inviting a helper and trying different options. More information about the material can be found in the video in this article.

  • curtain material;
  • type of cornice;
  • type of fastening to fabric;

  • interior decoration;
  • frequency of curtains movement;

Fixation of curtain fabrics on the eaves

Some practical tips for choosing fittings and recommendations on how to properly attach hooks on curtain fabrics:

  • For children’s rooms, it is better not to use models with clips, as the curtain can fall on the child if handling them carelessly.

Hooks are definitely not suitable for heavy curtains. But for light curtains, for example, in the kitchen, this is a great option.

Curtain hooks can be made in different modifications and they are not always attached to the cornice

You can consider some very common examples.

Curtains on hooks:

  • Plain tulle. If you chose an ordinary tulle as a curtain for the kitchen, then you can take ordinary inconspicuous hooks in the kit.If your task is to make the window neutral, not to play with it due to the color, special cut of curtains, etc., then such fasteners should be chosen.
  • Country style curtains. Usually these are curtains with a floral, berry, fruit print. They are often colorful and bright. And this brightness can be increased due to more original clamps, but overkill can be allowed. If you are afraid to bend, then the usual hooks for one of the colors that are on the curtains will balance the whole image.
  • Cafe curtain hooks.Cafe-style curtains are notable for the fact that the cornice for them is not located above the window, but practically in the middle of it. Large or curly clamps will distract attention, so here the hooks are almost indispensable.

Curtain hooks: plastic or metal

It can only be said about the price. Of course, metal hooks will cost more, but the price will still be reasonable. Plastic hooks are cheap but easier to deform. True, if the curtain is light, the same tulle, until there will be enough transparent plastic, there is a high probability that such hooks will last a long time.

Metal hooks usually have more interesting designs.Even a small hook can have different curls, grooves, and for those who are attentive to the details, this matters. The main problem with metal hooks is darkening over time.

Plastic hooks, being a budget option, can last up to 5 years if handled well.

How to clean metal hooks:

  • Use a delicate cleaner and a soft microfiber cloth;
  • Gently wipe the hooks without applying too much pressure;
  • No abrasive products of any kind.

Hardware that is exposed to direct sunlight darkens fastest. Wipe it down every week and you won’t even notice the darkening.
