Flowery city oasis Nano Nagle Place reopens at 10am next Tuesday 18 May.

“We’ve been painting, power washing, and pruning, so the grounds look better than ever – including our new secret courtyard garden,” said Shane Clarke, CEO at Cork’s hidden gem.

The team have been hatching plans for a summer of family fun and culture.

The Faces of Learning exhibition will be in the front windows and the brilliantly titled ‘Changing Habits’ summer exhibition, celebrating 250 years of convent life at Nano Nagle Place, launches in August.

Later that month they will cut the ribbon on their Cork Printmakers partnership gallery show ‘Inflorescence’.

Nano Nagle’s wonderful community projects, The Lantern, Cork Migrant Centre and the Men’s Group, have been working throughout Covid-19 to support and empower their participants.

They look forward to welcoming their diverse community back onsite.

As part of the Fáilte Ireland Covid Safety Charter commitments, all staff and volunteers will have received updated safety training upon opening.

“Download our app for an audio tour of the site,” suggested Shane.

“Bookings are staggered from 11am-4.15pm daily, and museum tickets available to buy online.

“Our gorgeous gardens are free all year around,” he added.

Good Day Deli will reopen on Thursday 10 June.

Flowers From The Secret Garden – Flowers

Quality of service 5.0/5
Value 5.0/5
Responsiveness 5.0/5
Flexibility 5.0/5
Professionalism 5.0/5

From the very beginning, Sarah was absolutely amazing to deal with. She took my vision of autumnal ice-cream pastels and made it a dream come true. The icing on the cake was the stunning floral display she created for a fireplace at Liss Ard Estate. All day long our guests were commenting on how beautiful the flowers were.

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

I loved that fireplace so much, still dreaming about it! What a lovely day, thanks so much XX

I absolutely loved my flowers. Sarah really brought my vision to life and everyone was complimenting them, particularly the deconstructws flower arch.

Sarah was an absolute Joy to work with and have involved in our big day! From Day 1 contact she was fantastic offering ideas, interpreting what we like (with our limited flower knowledge) and helping us bring our wedding vision to life. She created the most out of this world stunning bouquets for our bridal party with beautiful coloured ribbons to match our wedding theme and flower arrangements that had all guests complimenting them to this day! I could not recommend Sarah anymore, she has a calming approach when organising, her manner was a pleasure to deal with and gave me every bit of trust that our flowers would be beautiful within our budget. After each conversation I found myself so excited for our wedding day!
Thanks you so much Sarah for making our day special with your flowers!

Sarah was an absolute pleasure to work with. From the very beginning she was relaxed and easy to get along with, and she had wonderful ideas for designs and arrangements. We had to reschedule our party twice, and she was incredibly accommodating – even when we completely changed our plans shortly before the wedding!!
Our flowers fit the bill perfectly. Sarah took our few ideas and came up with something so beautiful. The most special of all, for me, was the flower crown that I asked for on a whim… It far exceeded my expectations and made me feel so confident and glamorous. I got so many compliments! I loved the fresh herbs dotted throughout our flowers, and the emphasis that Sarah puts on natural, seasonal designs. I couldn’t recommend her enough.

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

So glad you loved your crown – you looked fabulous in it! Thank you for your lovely review, and for trusting me with your flowers, I loved creating them for you. x

Sarah was so amazing, so much detail and thought went into my flowers. She was definitely very organised and prepared and well ahead of time before our wedding. She really interpreted what I wanted (even when I didn’t know how to say what I/we wanted), and the questionnaire I filled in at the start (14/15 months before the wedding) really helped me think about it more and focus on details. My “problem” was I loved SO MANY flowers! In the beginning, what drew me to Sarah was the colours I had seen on a display of hers and that they were Irish. I really appreciate that my flowers were natural, seasonal (almost all), Irish and grown pesticide/insecticide-free. Everyone admired them, the colours and textures, how they were slightly wild and tumbling but still so pretty and everything went so well together.

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

Thanks so much for your lovely review and for trusting my ideas – just loved using all those colours! XX

Sarah was a dream to work with in the lead up to our wedding. We had a small order (thanks Covid!) and I worried that suppliers might not be interested in working with us. This was far from the case with Sarah.
The flowers she delivered to us on the morning of the wedding were sensational. It was like she had picked the flowers fresh that day.
She made sure everyone had what they needed and, my favourite moment, when she gave me a card listing all the flowers used in my bouquet.
I dried the bouquet over my aga when we got home (after three days) and it is still absolutely beautiful.

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

So happy that the bouquet lives on! I was so happy to be back at weddings again and just loved creating your flowers – happy days xx

Sarah was so professional and an absolute pleasure to work with. My flowers were just stunning and perfect for me and my wedding. I requested natural and Irish wild flower for my bouquet and Sarah delivered way beyond my expectations. She also created the most stunning flower display in milk churns which looked beautiful at the entrance to the church and back at the reception. Sarah also catered for two of my bridesmaids bouquets who have hay fever. It brings me so much joy to look back at my pictures from my wedding and see my bouquet and flowers.

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

I was looking at the pictures this morning and they really made me smile – there was such joy that day, and it really comes through on the pictures. For me there was joy in using such bright, beautiful colours and I am so happy that they brought you joy too! Thank you for the lovely review x

Where to begin….
I found Sarah on Instagram, looking through photos of our chosen venue. Every time I saw a bouquet, floral arrangement or wreath I liked and checked the tag – it was Sarah, so I knew I needed her for our (little) big Day. Being a Covid bride was incredibly stressful, from ordering everything online to not getting to actually meet or speak face to face with any of our vendors until the actual day. Putting our trust in someone we’ve never met, so completely could have been very tough, but it wasn’t with Sarah. From the first moment I contacted Sarah she was an absolute dream to work with. Having a very small Covid wedding and thus no real colour palette for the day, not knowing how many people could actually come, never mind how many were going to be in our bridal party, or what they would be wearing, and not even knowing the name of flowers we liked, she could have given up on us very easily, but no, Sarah encouraged us, sent us mock-ups of designs and highlighted colour palettes that would go, along with flowers that she had grown and were actually in season. On days where I was fed up with the word “wedding” Sarah’s excitement and ideas genuinely carried me through and made me excited to have the day again, not just the piece of paper at the end of it. Sarah knew our venue so well and came prepared, working tirelessly to create our dream. Sarah made the most perfect bouquet for me, it was exactly what I had wanted and even though I was never able to articulate my ideas to her, she understood completely, built on ideas and even surpassed my wildest imaginations. We are absolutely so thrilled to have chosen to work with Sarah for our wedding. From her homegrown flowers, her kind and bubbly personality, her creativity and her incredible work, I wouldn’t change a thing!

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

Thank you so much Ruth, what a wonderful review – I’m thrilled! I had a ball working with you – thank you for trusting me and letting me run with my ideas, as I was balancing up a step ladder I had to pinch myself that this is what I do for a job! It was such a lovely day and I was so happy to be part of it. Lots of love and best wishes to both of you xxx

Where do I begin with Sarah….. she was just a breath of fresh air. From the beginning we just clicked, she got my vision for our wedding day completely and I genuinely used to look forward to heading to her studio for a chat and to see all her wonderful treasures. I could NOT recommend Sarah anymore , she thinks outside the box, has an amazing collection of vintage pieces that really added something magical to our day. We didn’t want the typical wedding day flowers , I really wanted a combination of dried flowers, feathers and some unusual bits and bobs thrown together and didn’t really know where to begin….. Sarah helped me pull all my ideas together and without her our day would not have been the same. We had “2 wedding days” due to Covid, and the flowers and all our centrepieces were just as beautiful and fresh the second day as they were the first . If I could give Sarah 10/5 I would. I will miss our chats so much ! Thank you Sarah for everything, you went above and beyond what I ever imagined ! Laura & Barry xx

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

I want to say that I really loved working with you, but how can I call that ‘work’? It was creative, fun and I count myself lucky when I get to ‘work’ with couples like you two. Thank you for such an amazing review, and just wishing you both so much love, health & happiness xxxx

If you are lucky enough to have Sarah as your florist, then sit back and enjoy the build up to your big day because she will be the biggest help to you as you plan your flowers, which are a huge part of the day.
Sarah is the best listener, she managed to translate my thoughts into words somehow, and then into the most beautiful collection of flowers that I have ever seen. Nothing was too much for her, even a change of mind/decision on my part quite close to the wedding. We had a moon gate, wands for our flower girls, bouquets for the bridal party, and decor for inside our marquee just to name a few things. As well as the beautiful flowers, Sarah is a joy to be with on the day, arriving early with the flowers beautifully prepared. She added excitement and joy to the best day of our lives and I cannot recommend her highly enough.

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

Ah Ali, such lovely words! You were an absolute delight to work with, your personality and love of flowers shone through, and your trust in me allowed me to have fun with the flowers. Days like that make me pinch myself that I do this for a living! XXXX

Sarah was an absolute dream to deal with for our wedding. From the moment I discovered her at a wedding fare in Castlemartyre Hotel , I knew she was the lady for our wedding flowers. It’s been 3 days since our wedding , and I still cannot stop admiring our flowers. They were everything I wanted AND more. I cannot thank Sarah enough for adding that special touch to our wedding. My bouquet was absolutely beautiful and has taken pride of place on my beloved Grandmothers grave . I will highly recommend Sarah . She is just so talented, and such a beautiful person. Everyone has been praising her work. Thank you Sarah x

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

You were a joy to work with from day one, thank you for trusting me with something so important to you XX

We loved our flowers! I was planning a wedding in Ireland from the US and through some example photos and phone conversations, Sarah got my flowers perfect! Everything was beautiful and she was super helpful letting me mail some things to her for the wedding day. The ideas and her suggestions were spot on.

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

I LOVED creating your flowers, and getting to go wild in the woods with the ceremony flowers – thanks for letting me have the creative freedom!!

Sarah did our wedding flowers just over two weeks ago. It was important to us that the flowers were local and seasonal. The bouquet and arrangements that Sarah created were absolutely beautiful, and it was a pleasure to deal with Sarah. We had only one meeting in person, but afterwards she knew exactly what we wanted and came up with a lovely autumnal theme for us. She was very flexible, easy going and helpful. It was great that she looked after the delivery as well. I can highly recommend her work. Thanks very much for making our day extra special with your flowers, Sarah!

To my absolute delight I choose Flowers from the Secret Garden to do my wedding flowers. I would highly recommend Sarah, her expertise, her advice, her selection, her ideas, her manner, she was a pleasure to deal with! There was no pressure to spend, she truly delivered on what my budget could allow. The flowers were perfect! I will continue to call to Sarah for her beautiful autumnal and Christmas wreaths!

Sarah did our wedding flowers three weeks ago. I had met Sarah for a couple of consultations,I had a fairly good idea of what I wanted but found it hard to put it into words. She had great ideas and just has a wonderful eye for detail. I wanted traditional, simple and elegant and that’s exactly what I got. She made flower crowns for my flower girls and a beautiful head piece for me, they were all just Perfect and when I saw them on the morning my vision was a reality. Thanks a million Sarah x

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

You’re so welcome, and you’re better at explaining than you think you are! Really enjoyed brining it all together x

I could not have asked for a better service than what Sarah provided us with for our wedding flowers – she was proactive in sourcing my favourite flower (out of season!), responsive, efficient and kind – and that’s before I take into account the stunning flowers she provided on the day! I couldn’t have imagined better, it was like she saw what I had been imagining and made it a reality, I’m still receiving compliments on them! I couldn’t recommend her highly enough!

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

And now muscari is one of my favourite flowers, you converted me!

Sarah was brilliant to deal with, great to get back to emails etc. Her bouquets were magnificent, we showed her a few pictures on the day of our consultation and she knew exactly what would suit and her recommendations were spot on. She came recommended to us, and we would highly highly recommend her!

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

Thanks Yvonne – really enjoyed finding all those little flowery treasures to put in those bouquets 🙂

Sarah was an absolute pleasure to deal with. Her flowers truly exceeded our expectations, from the bouquets and gorgeous flower girl crowns to the floral arrangement in the main reception area – they were all so fab! Our guests were marveling over the stunning floral arrangements days after the wedding. We highly recommend Sarah for her creativity and ability to put your vision into reality, along with being so easy and lovely to work with. Thank you Sarah!

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

Thanks so much Raina, really loved working on your flowers and you were a joy to work with!

Choosing flowers from the secret garden was one of the best wedding decisions we made! Sarah is so talented and our flowers on the day surpassed all my expectations, they were absolutely stunning! Sarah was so nice to deal with, really responsive to all emails (and I definitely sent ALOT!), nothing was too much hassle for her. Thank you so much Sarah, I will be recommending you to everyone I know that’s getting married!

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

Aw, thanks Amy, what a lovely thing to say! And there was definitely no hassle, loved doing your flowers! XX

We were absolutely delighted with our wedding flowers from Sarah at Flowers from the Secret Garden.
As the father of the groom is an Irish botanist, we knew the flowers were something we needed to get right! Sarah really delivered with beautiful Irish-grown bouquets, buttonholes and arrangements.
Sarah took on board our ideas in terms of the “look” we were going for and came up with brilliant and creative ways to make it happen. She also suggested ways of reusing arrangements from the ceremony at the reception so that we got the most out of our budget, which we really appreciated. Sarah and her team handled everything on the day (including moving arrangements from the church to the reception) and collection of everything the following day, which left us free to get on with enjoying ourselves.
All in all, it was fantastic working with Sarah and we couldn’t recommend her more highly.

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

Thank you for such a lovely review – I’m a tmy happiest working with Irish-grown flowers, and even more so when I know that they are important to the people receiving them. X

Sarah is the most talented and creative florist I have ever encountered!!
Sarah did the flowers for a family wedding in December 2018, and was one of my first calls when I had my own wedding date set for 2019! I went to meet Sarah at her nursery in North Cork, to see all the flowers in bloom and see what was in season was amazing. I gave little guidance to Sarah, just the general bridal party colours and trusted her from there. From the bouquets to the button holes, the flowers were breathtaking. The flowers outside the church were really beautiful, I loved the summer colours!!
Thank you so much for adding such a creative and special touch to our wedding day!!

Sarah was really great and very professional. Arrangements were made from overseas and she took the time and effort to make sure that everything was exactly as we requested. Was a pleasure to work with and she was very accommodating

We couldn’t have asked for a more breathtaking array at our wedding! Sarah made our dreams come true more than we could have imagined. She came highly recommended, so we reached out a few months before the wedding From our first interaction with her, she impressed us with her knowledge of flower availability (from her garden of course) around the time of our wedding and built bouquets around our wedding vibe and color scheme. Beyond the bouquets, table centerpieces, and boutonnières, she really impressed us with the little extra details. Flowing silk ribbon ties bouquets, a heart wreath on the door of the church, guest place settings accented with a sprig of lavender – not to mention the gorgeous brass candle stands and vases! Overall couldn’t think of anyone I’d rather work with on our wedding day

We chose Flowers from the secret garden for our wedding as I had seen Sarah’s work on Facebook and at local weddings. I have also attended her flower workshops. Her bouquets are always stunning. She understood and produced exactly what I wanted for our day. The flowers were fabulous and her professionalism is first class.

Sarah was amazing to deal with. From the first call, she understood exactly what I wanted even when I didn’t know myself.
Her proposal was perfect, just what I imagined.
She was really flexible all the way through to organize everything, she even saved us on D-day when we forgot our church candles, she replaced them for us!
The flower arrangement was incredible, tasteful and class.
I can’t thank you enough for everything, you made this day special for us!

Sarah was excellent for our wedding day. We met her months in advance and she gave us great ideas and delivered exactly what we wanted on the day. I cannot recommend her enough she was excellent.

Sarah, it was an absolute pleasure to work with you. From the first day we met you, you were so warm and knew exactly what vision we had for our wedding. You can tell immediately you have a passion for what you do. You gave me so many different options and ways I could achieve the look I was going for, which worked within my budget. I can honestly say you made it such a pleasurable experience choosing the flowers and guiding us through the design that we had envisioned. We cannot thank you enough.

Sarah, where do I even begin. I believe it was faith that brought us together!! From our first meeting in your magical timber flower house drinking tea from china cups and chatting all things flowers I knew I had hit the jackpot with you. You took my visions of fabric colours and textures to another level. Your attention to detail and creativity are truly amazing. I love that like me you don’t conform to trends. Your props…literally there are no words!! You are more then a florist you are a visionary artist. To all brides to be who are looking for stunning alternative bouquets of wild beautifulness, Sarah is your lady. Thank you so much Sarah. Honestly my flowers were the highlight of my day X

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

I can honestly say, I loved every minute of working with you! Thank you for trusting me, and letting me play with ideas, it was a joy x

Sarah was very helpful to us in preparing for our wedding in which we were both based abroad during preparation stage, and had to do everything over email and phone call. Sarah was very responsive and provided great suggestions. Lastly, Sarah provided a lovely flower arrangement for the Cake, and liaised very effectively with our Cake provider to come up with the perfect flowers to match the cake theme. I’d definitely recommend Sarah again and will be in touch with her for our next big event in Ireland.

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

Thank you both for your kind words, you were super easy to deal with, especially as you both had such a clear vision for your day. I loved creating that bouquet, pure glamour!

Sarah created the most incredible floral arrangements for our big day. When I saw them the morning of the wedding, I was truly blown away. Everyone said they were the most beautiful flowers they had ever seen (and they smelled just as wonderful). Sarah was a joy to deal with from the initial planning stages through to the big day itself. Having given her a rough idea of the style of our wedding, she worked her magic and created arrangements that perfectly suited our wedding. It is clear to see that Sarah loves what she does as it shines through in her work. I cannot recommend Sarah highly enough.

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

Anne thank you so much, you’re right, I do love what I do, especially when I get brides like you!

Sarah was such a pleasure to deal with from Day One. Visiting her beautiful garden centre, we settled down over tea to discuss ‘the vision’. Sarah is a natural and instantly got what we wanted. With a quick dash to the garden she returned laden with wildflowers and blue hydrangea – over a year before the wedding itself – to give us a sneak peak of what she had to offer. Bringing this mini-bouquet home, we knew we had nothing to worry about. Not only is Sarah a superb florist, she is an amazing wedding stylist who decorated both church and venue impeccably. From the bridal bouquet, flower-girl wands, to the buttonholes and filled urns, our ‘Let Love Grow’ theme really was complete. Thank you so much Sarah. We’ll be forever grateful. Sarah & KD x

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

You’re so welcome Sarah, I really enjoyed that whole process of being able to select colours & flowers, and having that time to be able to plan enough to grow certain flowers for the wedding. You were a delight to work with, congratulations to you both X

Sarah was absolutely a joy to deal with. She understood everything we liked, even if we didn’t quite know ourselves! We went in with ideas but didn’t know how to put it together. I liked wild flowers, herbs, colourful and seasonal looking flowers including sunflowers – Sarah made it work beautifully. We asked for some personal touches in remembrance candles, buttonholes and bouquets that meant a lot to us. She made our first consultation so easy.
Sarah paid huge attention to detail and the flowers lasted well considering the unnatural heat on the day. Who knew you could show a couple’s personality through flowers. Guests still comment on how bright and colourful our day was, especially our flowers.
We cannot recommend Flowers from the Secret Garden enough. Sarah is easy to get on with, passionate about her work and cares about the couple! It was one thing I did not worry about on the day. Cannot thank you enough!!

Sarah is amazing, her attention to detail and eye for implementing a vision is superb. She is also realistic when it comes to your budget, which, when planning a wedding is so important as many suppliers often try to sell what you really don’t need. You can be gaurteened Sarah does not do this. She is passionate about flowers and faboulous to deal with.

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

It’s a joy working on a wedding when both the bride and groom are passionate about flowers, and willing to work with your ideas and suggestions – I had a ball working with you both, and I’m so delighted for the both of you!

We got married in a heatwave so obviously I was extremely worried about how the flowers were going to fair out on the day. I really can not thank Sarah enough, she put her heart and soul in to ensuring that our flowers survived the day, and they did! We got so many compliments. Sarah is more than a talented florist, to me she was everything on the day in relation to decorating the venue and adding her own touches. Nothing was ever any trouble and the venue was fabulous. I think Sarah understood my vision more than I did myself. I would highly recommend Sarah for your big day… she is amazing at what she does!!!

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

Oh my, the heat that day! Thanks Mairead for your lovely comments – it was such a lovely day, and (despite the heat!) I really enjoyed creating your flowers for you! x

I can’t recommend Sarah and her flowers enough! I had the most amazing flowers and they were exactly what I wanted on the day. Sarah listened to me and gave me great advice and ideas regarding my flowers. She worked around my budget which was very important to me. Sarah was so easy to deal with. Looking back on my photos I still love my flowers and family and friends would comment on them also. ????????????????????

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

Thanks for the lovely review Eleanor, you were a pleasure to work with, and I have lovely memories of that glorious sunny day down in West Cork! x

Sarah was the most obliging and helpful person who I clicked with immediately! She knew what I wanted before I knew myself! Her service was excellent in every way! I couldn’t fault the flowers they were amazing.. Anyone considering booking Flowers from the Secret Garden won’t be disappointed!

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

Thanks Meghan, I really enjoyed working with you, and I think that showed through the flowers! Congratulations again x

Sarah was an excellent florist and decorator. We had a great brainstorming session earlier in the year and she took care of the rest. She gave us ideas of what she could do and we were able to veto what we didn’t like. She also made it clear what she could do and what we should do also, she was very helpful. It was important to us that Sarah made a lot of the creative decisions as we wouldn’t have much of an instinct for what would look good and she did just that. Not only were the flowers beautiful but Sarah also provided a beautifully decorated arch and decorated the dinner tables which we are indebted to her for. There was never an element of stress. Thank you Sarah for making our wedding beautiful! Lastly Sarah is by far the most reasonably priced florist along with growing many of her own flowers as opposed to importing flowers where possible, it’s good to know the flowers didn’t have to travel far and we were supporting local growers.

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

Thank you so much for these words David, it truly was fun working with you, as I relish I chance to be creative and play with ideas, especially with the themed tables (any excuse to go shopping for the weird & the wonderful is fine by me!). Wishing you both all the happiness in the future.

I cannot recommend Sarah and Flowers From The Secret Garden highly enough. I absolutely adored all of our wedding flowers. Sarah is an absolute genius with flowers, and from the first time I spoke to her I knew she would be able to bring my ideas for life. As well as creating beautiful flowers, Sarah was always so easy to contact and was willing to talk through all of my ideas. Thanks again, Siobhán and Donnacha O Connell

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

Thanks for the lovely review Siobhan – I love it when people say they adore my flowers! I loved creating them for you, plus I got a day at the seaside! Congratulations again to you both x

Sarah was fantastic to work with. She knew exactly what we were looking for. She kept in communication with me at all times. She even designed our dogs flowers as he was part of the whole day. Everyone complemented our floral arrangments especially Biscuits. She IS 5* in every way. I’m hoping I can put up pictures.

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

Thanks so much for your lovely review – I had great fun doing the flowers, Biscuit looked so handsome in his flower collar!!

Beautiful unique experience.

Response from Flowers From The Secret Garden

Sarah was a dream to have as a florist. I loved the fact that she grows her own flowers, as well as selecting from the flower markets, as being seasonal was an important element to me. She was very creative and very accommodating of all my changes!! She went out of her way to understand exactly what I was looking for and as such the results were perfect. I would very much recommend her for their wedding or any other celebration.

About Us – Shoe’s Cup & Cork

Whether you’re eating inside in the Café or Poker Room (upstairs), or outside in the Secret Garden, Cabanas or at the Bocce Court (down the alley next door to the building), or if you’re in a rush and just enjoying our take-out service, we want you to know that serving you is a labor of love. We love the concept of serving you high-quality food and drinks in an authentic setting that harkens back to a simpler time.

As best as we can tell, this building was constructed around 1880 and included what is now the Café and the Poker Room. Until the early 1920s, the building was used as the Leesburg Post Office, the town’s first telephone office, and even as a new car showroom. The large windows at the front were designed to open to allow cars in and out of the building.

In the early 1920s, Vincenzo Ranieri stopped off for lunch in Leesburg on his way from Sicily to Bluemont and decided to establish his American shoe repair and hat cleaning business here. The neon SHOES sign was installed in the 1940s as a promotion for Red Goose Shoes. Instead of changing the historic sign, we named the restaurant Shoe’s. The photo on the drop-down shade in front of the counter is of Vincenzo sometime in the late 1940s.

In 1973, Armenian-American Hartoun (“Arthur”) Varouganian, purchased the business and renamed it “Arthur’s Shoe Repair.” Vincenzo’s daughter, however, continued to live in the second-floor apartment for many years after the business changed hands. In 2005, Arthur’s closed and the building sat vacant until Karen fell in love with it.

During the conversion from a shoe repair shop to a restaurant, we tried to preserve and repurpose materials and other items that had been left behind. Wood from the old shelving was used to make new shelving; marble from the old shoeshine stand was reworked to provide countertops and the brass foot rests from the stand were relocated to the front window.

During construction, we noticed the heel of a shoe sticking out from the rubble of a wall, with a tag that had a due date of December 31, 1928, and a repair fee of $1.00 for a new heel that seems to have been completed. When the rightful owner shows up with the claim tag, the storage fee, and $1, we will gladly return it. Until then, it is the centerpiece of our Café chandelier.

We added a number of antiques, particularly in the Poker Room, which features elements of the 1920s and 1930s, including a Philco “Radiobar,” which was created during prohibition to conceal the “bar” in the event the police showed up uninvited. The chandelier hung in the Chicago Athletic Association during the 1920s, where Al Capone famously spent his leisure time.

Please try our curated wines and craft beers, our house-roasted fair-trade coffees, our wholesome recipes finished off with our organic homemade ice creams, and Mom’s award-winning Apple Pies. Put your iPhone down and play a game your grandparents played.

And, please know that we are honored and happy that you are here with us in our town “hangout,” where you’re a part of the “sole” of Leesburg.

With love,

Fred & Karen

The gardens were planted over 100 years ago around the time George Bernard Shaw was beavering away at his play Saint Joan on the island. Like countless others, the author was bewitched by the area he called ‘paradise.’

As for the garden themselves, the walled garden, even in winter is a sight to behold, but it’s the sunken Italian garden that will leave a lasting impression. Climb to the top of the Martello tower before you leave and drink in the breathtaking views of the bay. For information on opening times and prices see here.

The gardens are close to the Lough Boora Nature park if you want to make a day of it.

West Cork Secret, Kilbrittain – Peter Donegan Garden Design & Landscaping

Pictured above: Finbarr O’Mahoney of West Cork Secret and Peter Donegan.

They say:

The West Cork Secret is a magical hideaway, loved by all who discover it. It couples the serenity of beautifully landscaped gardens with the shrieks of excitement from the obstacle course. The perfect place for a family outing…..

I say:

If you get a chance to go there, do so. And if you can make it happen, try to get a group together so that you can stay and camp there. The grounds are stunning, extremely well thought out and is to this day a work in progress – Finbarr is constantly trying to add something – set within 35 acres and surrounded by the finest views. Daytime was nothing but the sounds of young and old enjoying all it has to offer and if I could live forever in one piece of Ireland’s landscape, this pretty much has all that I could ever want.

The video and images below explain it much better…..

High praise indeed. Very well deserved. And by the time you get there, the recessed, in ground, hand-built giant hobbit (from 2 gigantic tree stumps that blew over in the storms), complete with lawned roof should be complete. And breath.

I should note I was there in part for still friends reasons, but as far as here and maybe you reading this, I was also there camping (last year I was camping in an orchard).

What was amazing however was that while there, we were hit with 40mm of overnight rain and some of the worst weather I have ever seen camping, in summertime in Ireland. And though one might think that might put some off…. there the next day a group of just over 100 arrived at 10am. The sound of collective laughter is pretty damn genius.

What one soon realises is that muddy water slides when it’s raining don’t really matter and when met with a real hot shower after, a cuppa next to the [also real] log fire and an outdoor hand-built oven pizza that life, simply does not get any better than this.

Or as Ferris would say:

Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

Of note to the image above top: I could have picked a million other more beautiful places within West Cork Secret to get my photograph taken in front but, I chose right next to the hand-made wood fired pizza oven. Mom would have giggled at that one. 😉

Contact West Cork Secret:

To Finbarr and the entire family – thank you it was an honour.

The Sodshow meets Finbarr O’Mahony of West Cork Secret – Part 1

  • Sextons Camp Site, Clonakilty – Family camping/ longer stays nearby.
  • Wild Side Sports, Bandon. – possibly the best outdoors shop ever – MSR pocket rocket gas, North face shorts, new Icebreaker t-shirt; they do it all….
  • Scally’s Supervalu, Clonakilty – Best supermarket I have ever been in – And I dislike a lot shopping. Genius for stocking up if you arrive in late.
  • 53 Degrees North. Cork City Centre – Camping shop. I’ll never buy Bear Grylls branded stuff, ever. I did buy a Vango Omega 450XL tent.
  • Jim Cashman’s pub, Kilbrittain. Lovely spot. I’d have missed the hurling without it. It also doesn’t rain inside.
  • Richys Bar and Bistro – Pea and mint soup – soup is warm – and real coffeine. What a treat.
  • Kilbrittain Village Park more than worth a visit.
  • Other towns – Timoleague. And Courtmacsherry. Ye little gems. Love your red benches.

A short note on Clonakilty town:

The park square next to the Michael Collins statue is grand for a picnic. They boast possibly the finest post office I’ve ever seen. Parking in the town is pretty much all free. The tourist office is adjacent Richys Bistro; I only went in there as he was watering his hanging baskets.  To those responsible for making that all happen in Clonakilty – I hope you read this and pat yourself on the back. It’s no surprise the town was buzzing on a Monday afternoon. My congrats. Very, well done.

Best Places To Meet Girls In Cork & Dating Guide

Last updated on April 21st, 2021

If you are looking for the best places to meet girls in Cork with a dating guide you have found the right site. Just give us a few minutes of your time and you will learn all you need to know about where to pick up single women and take them out for a fun date night.

We always begin with a bit of a nightlife guide, next we will cover meeting single Cork girls during the day and a sneaky good online dating site for anyone that hopes to hook up quick. Date night ideas and the coolest things to see and do around the city will all get a mention as the post goes on.

If you want to look through more of our posts on UK cities you can do so at this link.

Nightclubs & Pick Up Bars

This would be our list of the best singles bars and nightclubs to pick up Cork girls:

The main area for singles nightlife is right in the City Centre which makes things very convenient. If any of you are tourists trying to plan a trip the best thing you can do is book a hotel in the City Centre.

Not only will this help you hook up with Cork girls from bars and nightclubs, but it will also make your whole trip a lot easier. As is common in this country there are tons of pubs around, the best thing you can do is walk around the crowded downtown streets and look for bars, pubs, or clubs that seem to have lots of single women inside and go join them.

We really like towns where you can just go to one area and have plenty of places to try and get laid near each other and you certainly get that here. Actually it is quite similar to trying to hook up with Dublin girls.

It should be pointed out that there is a huge university population here and when students are on break the nightlife will go down a few notches.

Meet Cork Girls During The Day

Once again the City Centre is going to offer just about all you need for day game. When many of the best things to do are right near each other it makes it a lot easier to find single Cork women be it day or night.

If you don’t enjoy street pickups then try and meet more girls at malls and shopping districts like:

  • Merchants Quay
  • Mahon Point
  • Douglas Village
  • Wilton Shopping Centre
  • Douglas Court
  • Blackpool Shopping Centre

Chat With Girls Online

Life is kind of weird right now isn’t it? Most people spend more time on ‘social media’ than they do living in the real world, and if anything social media is about the least social thing there is.

We all know that most Cork girls don’t even check their DM’s, all they really care about is how many followers they have and how many likes their last selfie got. This can make it pretty hard for us single men to get laid, particularly when they use bars and nightclubs as their new backdrop for their latest content.

It just feels like every time we go out to a bar or club the women we see aren’t there to hook up, but that is just kind of par for the course these days. It isn’t always like that though, and you can actually find girls near you online who want to hook up if you know where to look.

In this part of the world the place we have had the most success is actually Adult Friend Finder. Sure, scrolling through profiles and sending out messages may not be as fun as partying at a nightclub, but if it gets us the end result we are looking for then who really cares?

Adult Friend Finder isn’t about finding true love, starting a family, and getting married. It really isn’t even a dating site, it is a hook up site which is great.

When every girl in Cork using it knows she is there to get laid and not to find love it makes our job a whole lot easier. You don’t need to lead them on, you don’t need to lie and play games, you just need to invite a bunch of them over and have fun with the ones who say yes.

Cork Dating Guide

Now that we have got the best ways to meet single girls near you out of the way this Cork dating guide needs to get you ready for the next phase in the process. You are probably only going to hook up if your date night is on point, though luck can swing things from time to time.

Any of these romantic restaurants and cocktail bars should set a nice mood for the evening:

Enjoy a nice meal and then take her to a club or pub in the City Centre nightlife, or see a live show at a theatre like:

Day Date Ideas

If you get a beautiful day with lots of sun definitely enjoy it. Here are some good places to do just that:

  • Tramore Valley Park
  • Regional Park Ballincollig
  • Fitzgerald Park
  • Glen Park
  • Bell’s Field
  • Mizen Head

The Titanic Experience is a can’t miss, plus you have the Jameson Experience which is a whiskey museum. A quick trip over to Spike Island comes highly recommended, or just stroll around the City Centre and stop by The English Market.

For some sophistication on your date during the day visit museums and historic sites like:

  • Gaol Museum
  • The Glucksman
  • Collins Barracks Military Museum
  • Blackrock Castle Observatory
  • Nano Nagle Place
  • The Butter Museum

When you find the right girl to take a trip with be sure to look through our Belfast dating guide before you go.

Enjoy Dating Cork Girls

We will continue to update this page a few times a year but for now that is all we have to offer. If you have any special tips or want to correct any out of date information here please go ahead and do so in the comments.

Also remember that those single women near you on Adult Friend Finder are always waiting for new guys to hook up with. That wraps up our best places to meet girls in Cork with our dating guide, enjoy your time here.

Linoleum flooring | House & Garden

Linoleum flooring – lino – if you’re on first-name terms, might have felt like a dirty word only a few years ago, when it was still struggling to shake off its passé reputation from those of us who grew up in ‘70s houses with brown patterned vinyl flooring that had started to curl up at the corners.

The truth is, not only are lino and vinyl entirely different beasts (more on that later), this underdog of the flooring world is suddenly as desirable as a skirted sink after being featured in kitchen projects by some of London’s best designers. So, would you pass on the reclaimed parquet or tiles in place of inexpensive, hardwearing, eco-friendly lino? We’d argue that you should at least give it some consideration.

The designers using lino (and vinyl)

Unless you’re one of the few people who isn’t keeping an eye on (and then plotting to emulate) Beata Heuman’s joyful interiors, you’ll have noticed the Swedish designer’s penchant for lino flooring in kitchens. If Beata’s is the first name that springs to mind when thinking about good old linoleum, rest assured she’s not the only tastemaker who’s used it in their homes and projects recently.

Artist and maker Bridie Hall has used an arresting red and white marmoleum checkerboard in her London kitchen and designer and artist Luke Edward Hall chose the same colour combination for his Parisian hotel project, Les Deux Gares. Designer Sophie Rowell recently covered the kitchen and bathroom floors of a seaside apartment in blood-red vinyl, and garden designer Butter Wakefield has large-scale black and white lino throughout the ground floor of her home.

A quick scroll through some of the homes in our archives turned up more checkerboard lino in projects from Tara Craig, Natasha Howard and Max Rollitt. We could go on, but that’s already quite a roll call of linoleum endorsement.

A manifesto for decorating from Beata Heuman’s new book ‘Every Room Should Sing’

What’s the difference between vinyl and lino?

Lino and vinyl are often mistaken as being one and the same; two interchangeable names for one type of flooring, but this accidental belief is wildly incorrect, so allow us to clear this pickle up. Despite their similar smooth and glossy appearance, they’re as different as night and day. Vinyl flooring is a synthetic product, it’s made from chemicals and plastics, amongst other things. At the opposite end of the scale, linoleum is all-natural. So natural in fact that people say you could eat it, (we wouldn’t recommend it – nothing says indigestion like a lunch of leftover kitchen floor). Lino is made up of friendly materials such as cork, linseed oil, wood flour, tree resin and ground stone on a jute backing. If lino was a person, it would be clean eating and possibly at a health retreat in the mountains.

Why choose lino?

As well as being relatively affordable (especially when compared to alternatives such as hardwood, ceramic tiles or stone), lino is so durable that – assuming you don’t get tired of it – it will comfortably last for years or even decades.

Where vinyl would melt if an awry match fell on it, bubble and lift if it got too wet or end up scarred by a dropped knife, lino won’t. It won’t melt, it won’t be destroyed by spilt water and even if you did chip the surface, it could be filled and restored. This makes an already economical choice even better value because you know it will withstand wear and tear in a family home. On that note, its eco-friendly, natural composition (it’s both hypoallergenic and antibacterial) might make it more appealing if you’ve got children.

Not to say that you should avoid vinyl like the plague as high-end vinyl can still look wonderful, but it’s important to be aware of the differences with lino, so you know to be more careful if you’re accident-prone (and definitely don’t try to eat this one). Either way, both options are easy to install as they’re simply glued down in large sheets or tiles.

If you’re wondering how marmoleum comes into this, that’s also a type of lino and it’s even more appealing as you don’t need to use an adhesive to install it and it has no odour when it’s first laid, whereas lino can have a faint whiff of linseed oil, which will fade over time.

Garden designer Butter Wakefield’s house is a slice of the country in the city

How to use it

Kitchens and bathrooms are the two obvious spaces to use lino but of the two, a kitchen is most ideal as the floor is more likely to stay dry. Lino can also be great extending out of a kitchen and into a hallway to give the ground floor of a house continuity. Butter Wakefield has done this in her own home and she’s now a lino fan for life ‘I’ll always have it – it’s fantastically hard-wearing, soft underfoot and easy to clean’.

Wood-effect lino (or vinyl) is still a style we would pick last in sports at school as it doesn’t do full justice to the capabilities of the material. We say go bold with an interesting marbled pattern or use the individual tiles to create a classic checkerboard design (or something altogether more experimental). Timeless black and white will always look good, or make a statement and choose a bright colour for the most impact.

Where to buy your lino

For the best lino and marmoleum flooring, try Sinclair Till or Forbo. If you’d prefer vinyl, look at Karndean for natural stone and wood effects or Amtico for more colourful options.

The book was written by a woman exclusively for women and about Women.

Questions are raised about contemporary problems and options for their solutions. Because in the modern rhythm of life, it is becoming more and more difficult to remain a Woman with a capital letter of this word. And what is dangerous – the very essence, the basis of the feminine principle – her feelings, desires, the power of love remains covered with oblivion. And a huge number of beautiful inhabitants of the planet are beating like a fish on ice, in search of their place under the sun, torn between the spiritual and the material, between the process and the result, feelings and duty.

This book will be relevant precisely for those who want to understand, first of all, in themselves, to understand, accept, realize how to find harmony. And, as a result, to be feminine and desirable.

90,000 The most important books for parents about children

Books that our pediatricians advise to have in the parent’s home library. There are many approaches to treatment and education now, we offer what is closest to the Health Territory.

“And also, to know what parents should and should not owe to the state. What they can demand and what they can competently refuse (this applies to the rights to stay with the child in the hospital, the right not to make a Mantoux reaction, the rights to be vaccinated on an individual basis). program or not to be vaccinated at all, etc.and how to properly formalize your legal relationship with children’s educational institutions – I recommend the book by Arina Pokrovskaya “Medical Law for Children and Parents.” It is regularly reissued with updates, it contains links to current legislation, sample statements and proven algorithms of actions.

  • Kukushkina Anna Yurievna: Sears Martha, Sears William “Your child. Everything you need to know about your child – from birth to two years old ”-“ is a rare combination of professionalism and personal parenting experience.Indeed, EVERYTHING you need to know for a happy motherhood. “
  • Kazakova Lilia Valentinovna: The books of the Spanish pediatrician Carlos Gonzalez – “Kiss me” (about caring for a child), “Gift for a lifetime” (about breastfeeding) and “My baby does not want to eat.” “They have an understanding of the natural needs of the child.”
  • James J. McKenna “Sleeping Together with a Baby” – I find it essential for parents who are going to sleep well at night.
  • Gordon Newfeld and Gabor Mate “Don’t Miss Your Children” / Lyudmila Petranovskaya “Secret Support.Attachment in the life of a child “-” books about the meaning of attachment of children and parents are very useful for modern parents. We grow up in a society where everyone is “obsessed” with the socialization and independence of the child. the farther from the hands, the better, he will not be independent. So, the opposite is true. These books are about this. First, create for the baby a lasting world of affection, love, confidence in parents – and, having such roots, independence will develop well, and socialization will pass without incidents. “
  • Semyachkina Svetlana Vasilievna: Raymond Solano “Osteopathy for babies” – “in an accessible, good language explains what osteopathy is, allows a mother to assess herself whether her child needs osteopathy, explains how without pills it is possible to get rid of some infant problems (colic, regurgitation , constipation, etc.) and make it much easier for mom and baby to adapt after childbirth. ”
  • Nagel Ramiel “Natural Caries Treatment. Remineralization and restoration of teeth with the help of nutrition ”-“ how to prevent tooth damage and stop the development of caries ”.
  • Kolosova Galina Pavlovna: Irina Ryukhova “Your baby is older than a year” – “clearly, concretely, understandably and accessible. About how important an individual approach to a child, and not according to state standards: we are all different, and our children are different, every child ripens and matures at its own pace. ”
  • Sussenkova Irina Igorevna and Grigorchuk Evgenia Andreevna.
  • Robert Mendelssohn “How to raise a healthy child in spite of doctors”

“An unconventional view of the American pediatrician on the medical health care system as a whole (and our medicine against this background does not look so bad).About the ability to take responsibility for the health of your own child, about how not to spoil, but to strengthen the health of the baby. Well, to expand horizons (especially for those who are going to go to the USA, etc.) “

  • Sussenkova Irina Igorevna.

“The book tells about the correct approach to understanding health and making the right choice on the way to maintaining it”, Evgenia Andreevna Grigorchuk).

  • Kuznetsova Olga Evgenievna: Jean Ledloff “How to Raise a Happy Child” is a manual for parents on how to educate, without prohibiting, how to raise children calm, not twitchy. And how to hear the maternal instinct. “
  • Svetlana Anatolyevna Korzhova.
  • Liesel Polinski “PEKiP: Playing in Motion” – “a book dedicated to educational games for children from birth.”
  • Marva Ohanyan “Environmental Medicine” – “The book was written by a naturopathic doctor with 45 years of experience, it contains information about the causes of various diseases, the book will tell you how to prevent them and teach you to be healthy, not to depend on drugs.”
  • Messimund Panos “Home homeopathic medicine or a complete guide to family homeopathy” – “reveals the principles of homeopathic medicine, gives recommendations on the use of homeopathic medicines.”
  • Moinder Singh Yuz “The Journey of Disease” – “a book for those who are treated with homeopathy, for a complete, deep understanding of the possibilities of homeopathy, how and why homeopathic medicines affect genetically inherited diseases.”

And one more book, which our pediatricians could not pass by, which we will not recommend 100%, but which is useful to read. Remember, the truth is somewhere in between:

  • Grigorchuk Evgenia Andreevna: Alexander Kotok “Vaccinations in questions and answers for thinking parents” – “now the world is clearly divided into two camps: those who prefer traditional medicine and classical medicine. This book is about medicine, which believes that our body does not need drugs and vaccines and is capable of self-healing. The choice and decision-making is, of course, only for the parents, but it is useful to hear a different point of view, albeit ambiguous. “
