The pantry singapore: Family-Friendly Café Within Lush Greenery at Dempsey Hill

Family-Friendly Café Within Lush Greenery at Dempsey Hill

Dempsey Hill is certainly a trek from the main road, but therein lies its charm. I personally don’t mind the walk in (and out), even if it means I have to add a few minutes to my commute, as I get to soak in the lush greenery.

Adding to the numerous cafes in the area is The Pantry, a family-friendly spot where kids can run free and adults can catch up on their lives with friends.

The café features play areas for the lil’ ones as well as event spaces for family bonding activities throughout the year. Unfortunately, as we’re still currently in Phase 2, the playground is closed and there are only a handful of workshops that are allowed to go on.

However, due to the café’s spacious home, the kids still have ample room to frolic while waiting for their food to arrive, which also serves as an ideal break for parents to catch up over a refreshing cocktail or a nice hot cuppa.

The dishes here are ‘accessible, down-to-earth’ and great for sharing between parents and their kids. You’ll be greeted with both small bites and mains that are simple and delicious—it’s something everyone in the family will love.

One of the more popular dishes is their Chicken Karaage (S$12) that’s seasoned with togarashi (a Japanese powdered spice) and served with lime and an aioli. While most fried chicken bites can prove to be too greasy, these were far from it; they were succulent on the inside, and utterly crisp and savoury on the outside.

I was informed that kids love this, in particular, and I can totally understand why—you’ll want to order more portions of this as well if you’re planning to share this between more than two people.

Another well-loved sharing appetiser is their Baba Ganoush (S$12). The hummus is homemade and topped with falafel that’s also lovingly made in-house. I’ve tried falafel elsewhere, and most times, it can be too dry and brittle.

These, however, were soft and slightly moist. The flecks of paprika made the hummus so much more palatable, and you can’t miss out on the fluffy pita bread.

Their Grain Bowl (S$20) may look deceptively small in size, but it’s loaded with wholesome ingredients such as broccoli, pumpkin, avocado, chickpeas, carrots, radishes, pomegranate, farro (a type of grain), and rocket leaves to keep you satiated.

It’s also served warm, which might seem odd at first, but completely made sense when I took my first bite. There’s a hint of pepperiness to it, and I asked where it came from. It’s a special seasoning that the chef uses, which I wasn’t privy to.

However, this vitamin-dense dish grew on me, and I can safely say, it’s one of the healthier options I wouldn’t mind ordering again.

If you’re looking for something with more protein or something to share, the Moroccan Roasted Half Chicken (S$22) is a good bet. I know the struggle with roasted chicken is that it can sometimes turn out dry, but this bird is cooked sous vide, making it impeccably succulent and tender.

Again, the chef has put his special spice touch to the chicken, and I had no problem polishing it off—in spite of all the dishes I’d already been served.

Alternatively, you could opt for their hearty The Pantry Burger (S$24). The buns were satisfyingly buttery and the meat was cooked to perfect medium doneness. The Angus beef patty was juicy and well-seasoned, so there was very little to gripe about.

I also appreciated that the burger still held together, even after cutting it into smaller portions—which means that sharing it with your kids won’t prove to be a mess!

You must save space for dessert here, starting with their Apple Crumble Cookie Slice (S$12). The accompanying maple walnut ice cream was absolutely delicious on its own but made even better when eaten with a spoonful of the fluffy cake.

It was a meld of sweet and salty, which is great news for those who aren’t keen on saccharine treats.

Speaking of treats, I’m confident that the kids will be instantly drawn to their Rocky Road Brownie (S$12). The texture of the brownie straddled the sweet spot right between fudgy and airy; it’s something you’ll want to experience for yourself to truly understand and appreciate this unique mouthfeel.

It also wasn’t cloying, which is always a cause for celebration when it comes to rich chocolatey desserts. You and your family will have no issues finishing this, I’m sure.

Given The Pantry’s picturesque setting, it’s certainly a place that you’ll want to spend a leisurely afternoon with the family. Also, the price point’s affordable, and there’s ample seating space both indoors and outdoors.

If you’re looking for a new café to check out and support, The Pantry is a good place to start!

This open-sided cafe/restaurant is situated on the 3rd floor of ION Orchard shopping mall. Surrounded by expensive designer boutiques, it is not surprising the clientele here revolves around lunching ladies, yummy mummies and those in need of a break from all that high-end retail therapy. The menu features a selection of ‘luxury comfort food’ – from salads, sandwiches, pastas and risottos, with brunch favourites such as French Toast and Eggs Benedict being served up at weekends. But what many people come here for are the generously portioned cakes, tarts and puddings which evoke glances of envy as they make their way from the kitchen to table, and the large selection of cupcakes, from Red Velvet to Bananarama.

S’porean woman sets up pantry corner near Jalan Besar CC with free food for residents in need – Mothership.

Follow us on Telegram for the latest updates: https://t.me/mothershipsg

Any residents near Jalan Besar Community Centre who need daily food essentials can check out the new pantry corner at Block 817 Jellicoe Road.

All items at the pantry corner including cooking oil, instant noodles, milk, salt, and sugar are free for anyone to take.

Free food essentials for those in need

The initiative was set up by Anne Gasper, a 33-year-old Singaporean woman in the tech industry, and her 32-year-old non-Singaporean female friend.

The initiative was first suggested by another friend named Naidu, and was initially supposed to start in November.

However, Gasper and her friend chose to start the initiative before Deepavali (Nov. 4).

Speaking to Mothership, Gasper shared that they plan to set it up every two weeks on a Saturday morning and may look to expand to two spots in the future.

The 33-year-old disclosed that they are not working with any external vendors or agencies and and have fully funded the initiative this time round.

“We will be carrying on the subsequent efforts with the support of a couple of our friends who are also in this with us.”

Having lived in the neighbourhood for her entire life, Gasper noticed many seniors in the area and believed the items might be of use to them during this period. Hence, this location was chosen, she said.

Items available

Gasper said that the pantry will be focusing on the following essential items that are presently available at the pantry corner:

  • vegetable oil
  • cornflakes
  • milk
  • instant noodles
  • instant oatmeal
  • cane sugar
  • salt
  • pasta
  • canned milk
  • canned sardines

They may expand the current line-up of items to include rice and more meat products, she revealed, adding that they have created a menu of items for different fortnights.

Positive response

Gasper had only managed to catch sight of one elderly person walking away with two items.

A quick chat with the elderly person who spoke Tamil revealed to Gasper that a number of the residents in the area have gained awareness about this free-for-all pantry corner.

According to Gasper who monitored the place for two days, all the items had been picked up by people by Sunday (Oct. 31) morning.

As it is a project that they embarked to help those in the neighbourhood, Gasper shared that her team is “pretty self-sufficient” at the moment.

However, those who would like to contribute in some way or form to the initiative can drop her an email at [email protected]

Small family project Unmanned Free Food Pantry gets bigger, better, Latest Singapore News

When Mr Ken Yeo first started the Unmanned Free Food Pantry (UFFP) last August to help the needy staying in rental Housing Board flats, he did not expect his small family project to expand beyond the western part of Singapore.

This year, it is moving to the eastern and northern parts and covering three-room HDB flats, with the number of regular volunteers increasing from 20 to 40.

At first, the UFFP initiative involved Mr Yeo, his wife and their two children, who would set up free small-scale pop-up food pantries at the void decks of low-income neighbourhoods for residents to come by and help themselves, in hopes of helping financially vulnerable households hit by the Covid-19 crisis.

Mr Yeo, a 48-year-old owner of a gourmet minimart, used his connections to procure most of the groceries at wholesale prices.

He told The New Paper: “This style of unmanned pantries is uncommon in Singapore. (We leave the premises as) we want to let people take what they need while protecting their dignity.”

From dry non-perishable goods like rice, noodles, canned foods, cereals and biscuits, the items being given away now include eggs, disposable masks, detergent, food donations from volunteers and toothpaste and toothbrushes from corporations.

So far, Mr Yeo has spent about $10,000 out of his own pocket.

He said: “I contribute the money from my savings. This means fewer restaurant trips for the children, but they are okay with that.”

His nine-year-old daughter and seven-year-old son still help out occasionally to pack products and set up the pantries, and are very happy to do so.

“They are more proactive as compared to when they first started, and this has taught them that life is not always easy,” he said.

On why he wants to continue with UFFP as long as possible even though the Covid-19 situation has improved, Mr Yeo said: “The impact of Covid-19 is still being felt across society. It hit not only those in rental flats, but also the lower income group in society.”

He added: “I am thankful I have the time and financial capability to do it.

“I was partly inspired by my late mother who used to do charity work and buy food for old folk at the old folks’ home when I was younger, even though we were not so financially stable.

“I wanted to do something different from other charity initiatives – not to compete but to supplement.”

The UFFP has a Facebook page where updates are posted on pantry set-ups across the island.

Mr Yeo tries to do so weekly or whenever volunteers are available – despite getting drenched in the pouring rain during a drop at West Coast on Jan 23.

He said: “I would encourage more people to join as volunteers so that they can have a hands-on experience in helping others. Covid-19 or not, there are still underprivileged people in society.”

The Pantry at Shop Wonderland, Haji Lane

Fans of beautiful aesthetics will enjoy visiting The Pantry at Shop Wonderland. This is a café along Haji Lane in Kampong Glam that serves a variety of pastries, coffee, and tea. It is housed within Shop Wonderland, the retail arm of Wonderland for Detailed Planners, an event company. Update: This cafe is permanently closed.

Nice Ambience with Gorgeous Aesthetics

The Pantry Menu – click to enlarge

We were captivated by the beautiful interior design as we entered the cafe. The walls are lined with beautiful pictures, and the café has vintage wooden tables paired with classic Tiffany chairs.

We went upstairs to explore the second floor, which was as charming as the first level. Here, we found pretty bowls, cushions, notebooks, quotes within photo frames, and other exquisite ornaments on sale. There is also a workshop area designated for floral arrangement and other art classes.

It felt nice to dine surrounded by art.

Delicious Food!

Coffee Cake ($8)

Gryphon Marrakesh Mint Tea ($6.50)

We enjoyed the Gryphon Marrakesh Mint Tea ($6.50), which was light-bodied with the refreshing fragrance of mint and lemongrass. We paired this with a slice of Coffee Cake ($8). The luscious cream was not overwhelming, and complemented the aromatic coffee flavour nicely.

The Pantry at Shop Wonderland also sells a variety of goodies and bakes from young local brands.

A Nice Cafe with Charming Aesthetics and Delicious Pastries

It always feels nice to find a restaurant with good ambience and food, and we are glad to have discovered The Pantry at Shop Wonderland. Service was a little inconsistent, but that was probably because there was only two staff manning the whole café. But on the whole, we had an enjoyable time here.

If you are looking for a nice café with charming aesthetics and decent pastries, The Pantry at Shop Wonderland is definitely the place to go.
