Technical drafting pen: The Best Technical Drawing Pens

Fountain Pens vs Technical Pens for Drawing

This article looks at the pros and cons of drawing with fountain pens and technical pens.

When I started drawing, I used technical pens because they were marketed as drawing pens. I didn’t know much about fountain pens and thought they were just classy writing instruments. Years later, I discovered that people also use fountain pens for drawing.

So today, I’m going to share with you what I have learned over the years about fountain pens and technical pens. Hopefully, this article will help you find the right type of pen.

Main characteristic for technical pens is the ability to create lines with consistent width (thickness). The pens are sold at different line widths and you can purchase whichever width you like. The ink used is usually pigmented, which means the ink is archival and does fade with time. The ink is also waterproof when dry so they work well with other media.

Technical pens are created for precision drawing. Architects may draw with them because the pens offer different line widths to convey different information in their drawings. Illustrators may use them because they prefer the consistent and predictable lines. Mixed media artists can also use them because the ink is resistant to lifting when used with other media.

Technical pens use needle tips. This allows the artist to see the area and lines beneath the tip very clearly. The tips can be metal tips or felt tips. Metal tips are usually found on refillable technical pens while felt tips are found mostly on disposable ones. Metal tips obviously last longer but I find that they can be slightly scratchy on paper compared to felt tips. Felt tips are smoother on paper but they can wear out fast especially if you draw on rougher paper. Once the felt tip wears out, it may not be able to maintain its consistent width.

If you want to get a refillable technical pen, get one that you can refill with ink bottles because that is more economical in the long run. Examples include Rotring Isograph and Rapidograph. Some technical pens also use disposable ink cartridges. Examples include Copic SP Multiliners. The cost of buying disposable ink cartridges will add up and in my opinion usually not worth the money. A bottle of ink is more affordable and can be used to refilled many times.

Price range of disposable pens are lower than refillable ones (which can cost several times more).

I tend to use disposable pens when I am overseas because I do not want the hassle of bringing ink and refilling. When working outdoors, you can bring backup pens so that you always have a working pen to fall back on.

Refillable pens do need maintenance so that they do not clog. Pigmented inks can clog the pens when they dry. This happens when the pen is not capped properly or the pen hasn’t been used for a long time. If I use my pens daily, I usually clean them when I am not using them for the next few days, or for longer period of time.

I want to talk a bit more about the Copic SP Multiliner because it uses disposable cartridges. Prices of those ink cartridges are very close to their normal Copic Multiliners so it does not really make sense to get the Copic SP. Also, the felt tip will wear out so you have to spend extra to replace the tip also.

It’s just more economical to buy a disposable Copic Multiliner than get their so called refillable Copic SP. This is one refillable technical pen that has no advantage over the disposable version.

Main characteristics of fountain pens are the wide selection of nibs, inks and body design available.

The standard nibs like Extra Fine (EF), Fine (F), Medium (M) and Broad (B) are also capable of producing consistent line widths. However, you do not get as many choices in widths compared to technical pens, which have many steps between 0.01 all the way up to 1.0.

Some fountain pen nibs can produce lines of varying thickness. Examples include flexible nibs, calligraphy nibs and specialty nibs.

The line thickness you can get on flexible nibs depend on the amount of pressure you apply. They are good for calligraphy and drawing. Some examples of flexible nibs that I have include the Namiki Falcon, Pilot Falcon, Noodler’s Konrad and Ahab.

Lines produced by calligraphy nibs and specialty nibs depends on how you hold the pen. Some of the calligraphy nibs I have include the Pilot Parallel Pens, Platinum Music Nib, Duke 551 with Fude (bent) nib, Sailor’s Zoom, Cross Emperor and Cross Music Emperor.

Most common fountain inks are dyed based ink which not waterproof and may fade under light with time. The fading of ink is gradual and can be an issue if you need your work to be archival.

There are fountain pen inks that are waterproof as well, such as Noodler’s Bulletproof Black, Sailor KiwaGuro, De Atramentis Archive. I personally use Noodler’s Bulletproof Black which is a nice waterproof ink but its performance can be affected by the paper. When you want to use waterproof ink in fountain pens, make sure to read the ink bottle label and see if that ink is safe for use in fountain pens. When you open up ink bottles and see tiny dried ink bits, those are the types of inks to avoid using in fountain pens. It would be difficult, if not impossible, to clean the pen when it gets choked by dried ink.

Most fountain pens can be fitted with ink converter so you can refill with your own ink. Some fountain pens have built-in ink converters. If your fountain pen uses those disposable ink cartridges, I suggest you replace with ink converter so that it’s more economical in the long run, and you have the advantage of choosing whatever ink you like to use.

Price range of fountain pens is wide. There are China-made fountain pens selling for less than $10 on eBay, Hero or Duke. They may not be the prettiest but still functional. Specialty nib pens cost more. Luxury brands cost more as well. There are so many options for you to choose from. Pilot, Lamy and Platinum make affordable entry level pens as well as expensive ones.

Get the pen for the type of work you do.

If you need consistent line widths, it might be more appropriate to get technical pens. My recommendation for refillable ones would be Rotring Isograph, and for disposable ones, Rotring Tikky.

If you want a pen to write and draw with, perhaps a fountain pen is a better choice. Start with a good budget pen before exploring the more expensive ones. My recommendations would be the Lamy Safari and Pilot Metropolitan.

If you want to create expressive characteristic lines, you can consider specialty nibs. More affordable specialty nibs include flexible nibs, calligraphy nibs and Fude nibs. My recommendations are Duke 209, Noodler’s Ahab and Noodler’s Konrad.

Every artist have their own preference so it is difficult for me to recommend the perfect one for you. The pen that I like may not be one that you like. Sometimes you may have to try out many pens before you can find the one you like. Go to pen shops to try out, borrow from your friends, check out video reviews on Youtube. There are lots of useful resources available today for technical and fountain pens.

I hope this article is useful. May you find your favourite pen.

Although almost all markers are useful for artistic drawing and most artists have a wide variety of them for every occasion, in technical drawing, it is much more difficult to find a suitable marker. It has to be fine so that our lines can be seen well, but with a robust tip that does not break or leave stains. It also has to dry quickly so that the drawing does not smudge and be versatile and light so we can take it with us. Therefore, many architects spend hours looking for which marker will be the most suitable for their needs and where to find it. In this article, we make it easy for you and give you a choice between nine that for different reasons we believe are the best for technical drawing.

However, we will not give you all the work done: read the reviews carefully to decide which is the one that is closest to what you are looking for.

What Is The Difference Between Rapidograph And Isograph

What Ink Do I Use In Rapidograph And Isograph Pens?

Rotring’s technical pen ink is suitable for use on tracing paper, vellum, drawing paper and lineboard. It is lightfast, fast-drying, waterproof and smudge free once dry. The high density of the pigment gives it high opacity and the sharpness and adhesion of the line is superior.

This ink is often used by tattoo artists for tracing the work onto the skin and in their initial sketches. Rotring’s technical ink gives you the densest, blackest line on the market.

The Rotring technical pen ink cannot be erased with Rotring pencil erasers B20 or B30. The coloured inks can be inter-mixed with each other.

Rapidograph Ink Cartridges are available in black, blue and red ink. You get 3 replacement ink cartridges in a pack.

Isograph Ink is available in 23ml Bottles in black, blue, red and white ink. Black ink is also available in a 250ml bottle.

What Nib Sizes Are Available For The Rapidograph & Isograph Pens?

Both the Rapidograph and Isograph Pens are available in precision line widths from 0.10 to 1.0mm. This gives you a wide range to choose from whether requiring a continuous width of line for technical drawing or a greater choice for tonal and shading work.

Replacement Rapidograph Nibs and Isograph Nibs are available in the following sizes: 0. 10, 0.13, 0.18, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, 0.35, 0.40, 0.50, 0.70, 0.80 & 1.00.

Nibs for Rapidograph and Isograph Pens are long lasting and easy to replace, but the finer the nib the more quickly it tends to wear down.

Helpful Tips For Maintaining Rapidograph And Isograph Pen Nibs:

If you feel the nib is slightly blocked just leave in warm water with a little fairy liquid overnight. Make sure that the nib is not touching the bottom of a surface as this could damage it. If this doesn’t do the trick then ask in store for Rotring Cleaner sachets.

Pencils Leads and Pens – Construction Drawings

Pencils are one of the most basic and primary drawing tools of the professional designer. There are three basic types of pencils available to a designer for producing quality drawings (Figure 2-2). The selection is a matter of preference and the particular level of performance needed by the user.

Wood-Cased Pencil

The oldest manufactured pencil is of wood with a lead encased inside. It is seldom used for repetitive work in today’s office, yet is still a reliable tool for occasional use for convenience and when

Figure 2-2 The three types of pencils available for designers are the wood-cased pencil, the traditional leadholder, and the fine-line mechanical pencil.

Figure 2-2 The three types of pencils available for designers are the wood-cased pencil, the traditional leadholder, and the fine-line mechanical pencil.

Table 2-2 Pencil-lead Weights*

Hard pencil leads are used for drawings, light layouts, and drawings requiring a high degree of accuracy.

These leads are used for sketching, architectural line work, lettering and general purposes.

Soft leads are used for sketching, rendering, and graphical accents.

*The gradations can vary with different brands and types of drawing media. When in doubt, try a sample or test first.

pencil line control is needed. To expose the lead, the wood shell is cut away by a draftsman’s pencil sharpener. However, the sharpener only cuts the wood and does not touch the lead. To “point” the lead, the designer can use a lead pointer, which forms the lead into a conical point. If a wedge point is desired, rubbing the lead on sandpaper can form it. Wood-cased pencils come in a variety of different lead weights, ranging from 9H (extremely hard) to 6B (extremely soft). These leads are explained later in this chapter.

Traditional Leadholder

This type of mechanical pencil is made of metal or plastic, with special individual leads inserted in a permanent holder. Different lead weights may be inserted to produce a variety of sharp line weights. Pencil leads are graded from 9H (hard) to F (firm) to 6B (black). Beginners should sharpen the point frequently for a clear, sharp line until they develop the ability to rotate the pencil while drawing to wear the point more evenly. The lead is sharpened by rubbing and rotating on sandpaper, on regular paper, or in a special mechanical lead pointer. When using sandpaper to sharpen the lead, it should be slanted at a low angle to achieve a good taper and point.

Fine-Line Mechanical Pencil

This type of mechanical pencil does not require sharpening and is loaded with multiple leads of the same diameter and hardness. The pencil generally is made to hold 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, or 0.9 mm diameter lead. The size of the lead determines the line width. This type of pencil is also generally rotated while drawing, and capable of producing consistently sharp, clean lines. Like the traditional lead-holder, the mechanical pencil offers the convenience of a steady supply of lead, as the leads are inserted in the bottom of the holder and pushed out the tip by pressing a button on the end of the pencil. It is the most widely used pencil in today’s schools and offices for sketching, note-taking, and even drafting.

A variety of leads are available for both wood and mechanical pencils. Leads used on tracing paper and drafting paper are composed of graphite. Leads range in grades from 9H (extremely hard) to 6B (extremely soft). (See Table 2-2.) The softer the lead, the darker the image or line it will produce. For most drafting work, where clean, crisp lines are necessary, H and 2H leads are used. For sketching, softer leads are better, such as F and HB. Very soft leads, such as the B grades, are best for pencil renderings and shadowing work. For light, preliminary layout work, 3H and 4H leads are best.

Generally, the more “tooth” or roughness a paper has, the harder the lead should be. Also, the harder the drawing surface, the softer the lead will feel. If you are in high humidity conditions, the apparent hardness of the lead tends to increase.

As noted before, there are also special plastic-leaded pencils available for drawing on plastic drafting film. These plastic leads are available in five grades of hardness, ranging from E1 (soft) to E5 (super hard). They are water-resistant and bond well to the plastic film. A vinyl eraser is also available for use with these special leads.

Some designers prefer ink and use a technical fountain pen (Figure 2-3), as it is capable of precise line width. It can be used for both freehand and drafted ink drawings. As with drafting pencils, pens are available in a variety of forms and price ranges. However, most technical drawing pens consist of a tubular point, which has an ink-flow-regulating wire inside it. The size of the tubular point is what determines the finished width. Standard widths of ink lines are measured according to a line-width code, such as .30/00, which means the line width is .30 mm or the American standard size of 00. Metric widths range from .13 to 2.0 mm, while the American standard widths range from 000000 to 6. These sizes correspond to line-width designations developed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and are coordinated with metric sizes. For a starter pen set, a good range of point sizes would be 3×0 (. 25 mm), 2×0 (.3 mm), 1 (.45 mm), and 3 (.80 mm). Technical pens that produce the same line widths are also available with felt tips. These are less costly, however their felt tips tend to wear out faster than the metal tips.

An advantage to using ink, especially on plastic drafting film, is that it will last several years longer than pencil, will not smudge, and will produce excellent reproductions. When using technical pens, remember to keep points screwed in securely to prevent the ink from clogging. Always replace the cap firmly after each use to

keep the ink from drying, and store the pens with their points up when not in use.

Use a good waterproof black drawing ink. Good nonclogging ink that is specially made for use in fountain and technical pens is the best choice.

Technical drawing: Selecting your medium

From the initial sketch to the final diagram, technical drawing is multi-faceted! Therefore, you need to select each medium carefully, in correlation with the nature of your work.

1. Graphite

The professional’s number one tool! It comes as pencils, sticks and leads to be inserted in mechanical pencils. Select it on the basis of the drawing you need to create.

  • The hardness of the lead determines the color and strength of your line.
  • B (Black) + a number: soft: these points are used for strong, dense lines, with screens and surfaces to be blackened.
  • H (Hard) + a number: hard: for making narrow, grayer lines.
  • HB: intermediate: for a sustained gray, the most versatile lead of all.
  • The thickness of the lead conditions the line.
  • Do your sketches with a thick (2 mm and more) lead, for a wide range of lines.
  • Save thin points (less than 1 mm) for details.

Color pencils

Their leads consist of a mixture of pigments, kaolin, wax and glue.

  • Classical pencils with hard points, for narrow lines.
  • Thick, soft pencils loaded with pigments, for coloring and shading surfaces.
  • Watercolor pencils can be reworked with a wet paint brush, for effects: the drawing texture fades, smoothing the color.

They come in a number of forms, for various kinds of work:

  • Metal pen: the pressure applied and the slant relative to the paper diffuses more or less ink, allowing for an infinite variety of lines (including very narrow, with the back of the pen nib).
  • Stylographic pens: they release a continuous amount of ink and are appropriate for both quick sketches and precise lines.
  • Reed: this piece of bamboo sharpened to a point releases very little ink and is the perfect way to add shadows and shading.

How fast you move determines the opacity of your stroke. The possibilities vary, from the thinnest line to filling in wide areas, depending on the flexibility and thickness of the point of your felt-tip pen:

  • Very hard “needle” tips, and slightly more flexible “fiber” tips, create lines with a constant thickness.
  • Flexible tips, for output close to a paint brush.

Tip: Media designed to last

– Some very practical models have two tips with different widths that can be switched.

– Refillable felt-tip pens are preferable.

– Classical tips are beveled, but they also come rounded, conical and even flat.

Other media

Dry or wet: dry pastels, watercolor paint, ink applied with a paint brush… Give leads, markers, pens and ballpoint pens a try with other techniques. An architectural drawing done with a ball-point pen, then lightly colored with watercolors, will look much more realistic!

Drawing is the foundation for many creative practices. Most skilled illustrators engage in multiple kinds of drawing to express their plans and ideas. In this article, we look at 13 types of drawing, careers that use drawing in their everyday work and tools and mediums used to create drawings in a variety of fields.

What is drawing?

Drawing is the act of making marks on a surface to create forms, shapes or images. It is also an artistic method of expression that allows the creator to show how they view the world or interpret different aspects of it. Drawings, or the product of the activity of drawing, may vary based on the subject, tools used, medium and purpose of the project.

Types of drawing

Types of drawing for pleasure and career may include:

1. Caricature drawing

Caricature drawings are images that depict their subjects in oversimplified or overdramatized manners. Some hallmarks of caricatures may include enlarging or shrinking someone’s facial features or personifying an object. Artists may use caricature in animation, advertising or graphic design.

2. Cartoon drawing

Cartoon drawings typically depict a more comedic or whimsical view of the world. Similar to caricatures, they may use overdramatized shapes and colors to show emotion or tone through images. Artists may use cartoons in illustrations, animation, advertising and graphic design. Some specific types of cartoons include:

Comics use cartoon-style drawing to present scenes and stories through action panels. Besides images, comics use textual devices like captions and speech bubbles to create more robust stories. They may vary in length—from a single panel to an entire book—and complexity. Some examples of comics include graphic novels and Manga, a type of comic book developed in Japan that includes anime-like characters.

Editorial cartoons use a comics-style of panel storytelling to make a joke or comment on a topic of cultural relevance, such a politics or pop culture. They are usually only one panel long, use captions and other textual devices for clarity and are slanted toward a specific opinion.

3. Figure drawing

Artists create figure drawings, also known as still-life drawings, from making observations in the physical world. Subjects are often human models, but can also include objects like fruit, vehicles or items in nature. Artists who work in figure drawing try to capture the world as they see it. Art instructors typically use figure drawing to teach fundamentals and help students learn perspective, proportions and shading.

4. Gesture drawing

Like figure drawing, gesture drawing uses real-life subjects as inspiration. However, gesture drawing focuses on movement and hopes to capture action in addition to form and pose. Often, models or subjects change poses every one to five minutes to enact motion. The shorter the pose, the less an artist can capture, so gesture drawings may be less detailed than other types of illustrations.

5. Line drawing

Line drawing focuses on the use of straight lines and contours without shading. In most line drawings, the artist creates an entire image without picking their instrument up from the surface. Line drawing may teach the importance of angles and curves without putting an emphasis on detail.

6. Perspective drawing

Artists use perspective drawing, also known as 3D or anamorphic drawing, to create three-dimensional images in a two-dimensional space, such as on paper. Those who use this type of drawing pay attention to distance, space, light, volume, surface and scale to determine how each object relates to one another. Two types of perspective drawing include:

  • Aerial perspective: Focuses on shading, tone and color aspects of perspective
  • Linear perspective: Focuses on the organization of shapes within a space

Architects, engineers, interior designers and illustrators may work in perspective drawing.

7. Photorealism

Photorealism, also called hyperrealism, is the concept of drawing something that looks so lifelike it could be mistaken for a photograph. Artists often use this technique for human subjects but may also use animals, landscapes, cityscapes and other natural features for inspiration. Photorealism focuses on contours, shading and details to make subjects look as authentic as possible.

8. Pointillism

Pointillism is an artistic technique more often used in painting but can also apply to drawings. It uses a stippling method to create many tiny dots that, when viewed from afar, create a realistic image with light and shadows.

9. Scientific illustrations

Artists create scientific illustrations, sometimes known as diagrams, to communicate complex concepts in an easy-to-comprehend way. They show scientific subjects like animals, the human body and naturally occurring objects in the universe in great detail in both still and animated forms. Scientific illustrations may use arrows and labels to point out specific information and show how certain parts interact with one another to give the most amount of information possible.

10. Scratchboard drawing

Scratchboard drawing, also known as scraperboard drawing, uses a cardboard sheet coated with a thin layer of clay and India ink. Artists use a sharp tool, sometimes called a scratchboard nib, to carve through the ink and reveal the clay. The more lines they make, the brighter the picture becomes. Scratchboard drawings can be very detailed and may even resemble wood engravings sometimes.

11. Silhouette drawing

Silhouettes are images or designs that show the outline of an object in a single hue or tone. Artists usually create them in black and white, with one color as the background and the other filling the silhouette. They don’t include details beyond the lines and curves present in the outline, and are popular for making profile portraits.

12. Sketch drawing

You can usually tell a sketch drawing by its less-refined lines and edges and unpolished look. Artists often create sketches with simple, quick marks and may ignore adding certain details that aren’t important to the piece. They are typically used to show a working concept or capture something important in a short amount of time. Specific types of sketches include:

Automotive sketches are used to show designs for sedans, trucks, motorcycles and other motorized vehicles. They’re often used to represent the overall complex shapes of the subject and include certain areas with more details to show design features or upgrades, like custom wheels. Automotive sketches can show both interiors and exteriors and usually feature color to illustrate paint schemes or design ideas.

Media outlets use courtroom sketches in the absence of photographs or film to illustrate stories for trials and legal proceedings. Courtroom sketch artists may focus most closely on people’s faces, hair or arms to show the important subjects or actions of a court proceeding. Though it’s a sketch, some aspects may include a lot of detail.

Fashion illustrations typically feature long, elongated figures meant to mimic the look of runway models. However, these figures rarely include facial features or fingers because the focus is on the designs. Fashion illustrations may have either a rough or polished look, depending on the artist. They use lines, contours and colors to create initial ideas for future wearable designs.

Interior sketches show how design ideas fit together and how they’ll look in a 3D setting. Interior designers use perspective and technical drawing together to create accurately proportioned items, shading and shadows. Interior sketches may appear in black and white or in color to show how tones, fabrics or schemes work together within the room.

13. Technical drawing

Technical drawing is the creation of precise diagrams and plans that show how to build or construct something, or how it functions. Engineers, electricians, contractors and other related professionals use these drawings in areas such as:

Architectural drawings show the detailed features of buildings. They may include replications of buildings that already exist, modifications for redesigns or plans to create brand new structures. Architectural drawings are extremely detailed and show every aspect of construction to help visualize the ideas and concepts that go into a build. Using an architectural drawing may help planners and construction teams decide on the type of labor and supplies they need for a certain job.

Automotive technical drawings act as blueprints to show the mechanics of a motor vehicle. They often include all moving parts and show how each one interconnects with the next. Automotive drawings may show the vehicle as a whole or a specific part, like the engine.

Electrical drawings show the components of an electrical system of an item, such as the wiring, power sources and lighting. They may also include information about voltage and capacity. Electrical drawings use lines, colors and basic shapes to create a clear blueprint.

Engineering drawings define the requirements needed to produce an engineering product. Professionals use them like technical manuals to troubleshoot their tools and find flaws in mechanical designs to make them work better or more efficiently. Engineers use mathematical equations to ensure that the highly detailed plans show accurate depictions of each element.

Plumbing drawings show the systems that bring water into an area and remove waste. Elements may include water supply lines, vent pipes, valves, drains and fixtures. Plumbers use a variety of industry-created symbols to show the correct items. Like electrical drawings, plumbing drawings use many straight and curved lines. While they show much detail in their content, these types of drawings often lack elements like color and shading.

Structural drawings are like architectural drawings, but they focus on load-carrying members of a structure, like beams or walls, rather than details like surface finishes or mechanical systems. They look like blueprints or other plans rather than a traditional artistic drawing. Structural designers use math and science to calculate the most accurate proportions of included items to ensure proper stability and construction.

Drawing tools

Artists use a variety of tools to make drawings, including:

Chalk is a powdery drawing tool made from naturally occurring minerals. Often, manufacturers add other pigments to create colors besides red, white and black. Chalk is a suitable tool for blending and shading and works on many surfaces. It’s easily transferable among surfaces.

Charcoal is a crumbly black material made of carbon. In art, it’s often sold in sticks or pencils. It’s an excellent tool for shading and blending because it’s easily smudged.

Colored pencil

Colored pencils are wood shells with wax or oil pigmented centers. They come in a variety of colors and hues. Unlike other materials, they’re less like to smudge but still blend easily.

Wax crayons add color to drawings in a non-transferable way. Because of their construction, crayons are less likely to transfer surfaces, but are also more difficult to use for blending and shading.

Graphite is a metallic gray powder that comes in pencils and sticks. It’s often used for line drawing, blending and shading. Like other tools, it may transfer among surfaces.

Ink, a liquid pigmentation, usually fills pens and markers for drawing. With additives, ink may come in a variety of colors and consistencies. Ink may help in line drawing and blending. It’s transferable when wet.

Pastels are sticks of powdered pigment made from oil or water-based materials. They’re excellent for blending but can transfer to other surfaces.

Mediums for drawing

Artists create drawings on a variety of surfaces. Some of the most common include:

  • Canvas
  • Ceramic
  • Industrial materials
  • Paper
  • Plaster
  • Wood

Boys far outnumber girls in the take up of engineering, technical drawing and construction studies, while girls far outnumber boys in home economics, music, art and European languages.

The number of boys wanting to study engineering, drafting and design, far outnumbered girls, while girls are much more likely than boys to study home economics, music, the visual arts and European languages.

Similarly, Woodwork, Agriculture, Technical Drawing and Electricity are not offered at the exclusively female schools.

Likewise, subjects such as carpentry and joinery, agriculture, drawing , and electrical engineering are not taught in girls’ schools.

Arts and Craft, Sculpture and Technical Drawing are offered at the upper basic cycle, and Arts, Technical Drawing , and Home Economics are available at the secondary level.

Arts and Crafts, Sculpting and Drawing are taught in the upper elementary school level, while at the high school level, subjects such as Artistic Creativity Drawing and Home Economics are offered.

Then in February 1945, in the same place, on the basis of the former Baron Stieglitz College of Technical Drawing , the Leningrad College of Art and Industry was opened, which soon turned into the Mukhina Higher College of Art and Industry.

And in February 1945, there, on the basis of the former school of technical drawing of Baron A. L. Stieglitz, the Leningrad art-industrial school was opened, which was soon transformed into the Higher art-industrial school named after A.L. V. I. Mukhina.

The reason for that was, inter alia, that schools predominantly offered home economics and typing to girls and technical drawing , woodwork and metal work to boys, in addition to gender stereotyping in curriculum materials.

This is due, inter alia, to the fact that girls usually acquire housekeeping and typing skills at school, while boys learn drawing and carpentry and plumbing, as well as the stereotypical representation of the social roles of women and men in textbooks.

It is not likely for girls to opt for non-traditional technical subjects, but some girls do choose Technical Drawing and Building Technology.

Female students rarely choose non-traditional technical subjects, although some study drawing and building technology.

Technical drawing : technical specifications (spacing / dimensions of structures, etc.)

90,000 Problem solutions Some information from the theory of drawing Basic information on the design of a technical drawing

from “Collection of tasks on the basics of drawing

In the general part of the subject Drawing, basic information on the design of a technical drawing, the basics of descriptive geometry, projection drawing and elements of technical drawing are studied.[c.110]

Methodological instructions for studying the general part of the subject are set out in the preface.

The rapid development of technology in all branches of industry, starting from the end of the 19th century, made possible the widespread introduction of technological information into drawings. A modern drawing is a rectangular complex projection of a part or structure, equipped with symbols that make it possible to determine the material of the product, its workpiece, weight, dimensional accuracy, surface roughness, heat treatment, the order of technological operations, marking and other data necessary to characterize the product.[c.110]

The domestic science of drawing developed at a rapid pace and, especially during the Soviet period, achieved significant results.

Note. Design diagrams and principles of operation of certain types of instruments and devices are considered in 5-17, 22-25, 27, 29, 35, 39, 43, 45 and 46.

When making a single copy, the following methods are used: onion skinning (see 34), copying with highlighting, splitting (see.23), pantographing (copying using a device called a pantograph).

The methods of serial reproduction of technical documents include blueprint, photographic, photoelectrographic, thermocopy.

Mass production of copies is carried out in printing houses.

Before work, the drawing paper is removed from the case and aligned on the edge of the drawing board (see.explanations for fig. 214).

The surface of the board is controlled by means of a verified ruler1 and. This ruler is applied with its edge to different places of the board field, while observing that there is no gap between the board and the edge of the ruler. The straightness of the edges of the board is checked by eye (Fig. 215) – there should be no noticeable flaws along the edge.

Depending on the density of graphite, pencils are divided into very hard (6T-ZT), hard (2T-T), medium hard (TM), soft (M) and very soft (2M-5M). For drawing use pencils hard, medium hard and soft.Drafting pencils should not be round, or they will roll off the board.

Pencils should be sharpened (fig. 224) with obligatory editing on sandpaper (fig. 225). For drawing thin lines, the tip of the pencil is sharpened conically (Fig. 224, a), and for drawing thick lines – with a spatula (Fig. 224.6). It should be borne in mind that the length of the pencil must be at least 120 mm.

Trimming the drawing should be done with a pocket knife using a match, through which the knife is pierced, as shown in Fig.227. This recommendation is necessary in order not to spoil the board and the flight tire.

In drawing practice, three types of ready-made tools with tools, a ready-made with 13 tools and a ready-made with 20 tools are used.

The ready-made tool contains the following tools: a compass-measuring instrument, a compass with a drawing pen and a pencil insert, a drawing pen with a pen, a pen with a needle, a centric, needles and a screwdriver.

Before work, the screw mechanism of the reefeder is adjusted (Fig.233) and marks are drawn on the nut with ink (fig. 234). By setting the risks of the nut opposite the line of the reefer, a quite definite opening of the flaps is achieved.

Note. There are ruling pen designs with pre-marked risks on the nut and on the sash.

When working, a bottle of ink is placed in a special stand made from a cardboard box or a piece of wood (Fig. 245). This stand protects the bottle from accidental overturning.[c.125]

It is recommended to fill the drawing pen with ink using a goose feather, sharpened with a spatula.
