What is a Talking Clock? (with pictures)

A talking clock is a timekeeping device that uses sound to notify users of the current time. It may also be referred to as a speaking clock or auditory clock. Talking clocks have different designs depending on their intended use; some are designed as devices for the visually impaired, others are intended to help children learn to tell time, while others are simply designed like traditional clocks with the option to speak the time aloud. This is typically for alarm purposes.

One of the most common uses for a talking clock is for a timekeeping device for the blind or visually impaired. These clocks generally announce the time at set intervals, such as every hour or half hour. They also typically have large, simple buttons that can be pressed to hear the time on demand, or to set an alarm. A talking clock designed for the visually impaired may or may not have a traditional clock face; these are offered in both analog and digital versions, with large, prominent numbers.

The second type of talking clock is one designed to help a child learn to tell time. This type of clock may be designed to appeal to children, and may be decorated using fun colors or cartoon characters. It will typically have a digital or analog clock face with larger numbers than usual, and may also announce the time with the press of a button. Some of these clocks may also ask children questions with the push of a button, such as “What time will it be in 30 minutes?” This can help children become accustomed to using clocks.

Another type of talking clock is a more traditional alarm clock. These clocks are typically digital, but rather than sounding a standard alarm such as a beep or turning the radio on to play, the clock will instead announce the time repeatedly until it is shut off. Some of these clocks may have other innovative features as well; one particular design of alarm clock is built on wheels, so when the alarm sounds, it rolls off the table and rolls around the room, forcing the owner to get out of bed and turn it off.

Novelty clocks may also feature auditory speaking abilities as well. Some of these may feature talking cartoon characters, animals, or fortune tellers, for example. Talking clocks are convenient and useful devices that may be used for many different needs; most may be powered by an electrical plug with a back-up battery system.

Braille computer equipment

Braille can also be produced on a computer using translation software and a Braille embosser instead of a printer.

A keyboard with Braille keys instead of the standard QWERTY keys can be used, although some users may prefer to continue using a standard keyboard. A Braille display can be linked to a computer to enable a user to read by touch what is on the screen.

If portable computing is required, Braille notetakers are machines with word processing features similar to an electric word processor or laptop, but with a Braille keyboard and / or Braille display.

Braille embossers
Braille embossers print Braille onto special Braille paper, from a computer. They are connected to the computer like a text printer or can be connected to notetakers. The paper is thicker and more expensive than standard printer paper.

Software is required to convert text to Braille before it is printed/embossed (known as Braille translation software).

Embossers can be noisy; if an embosser is going to be used regularly and cannot be kept in a room away from people, an acoustic hood or soundproof case is recommended. Before purchasing a Braille embosser consider issues such as the noise, the speed the embosser is capable of printing at, and whether you need the printer to be portable.

Braille keyboards
These computer keyboards with Braille keys and are different in design to the traditional QWERTY keyboard keys.

Braille displays
Brailler displays are tactile devices that are usually placed in front of your computer keyboard providing you with the means to read the contents of your computer screen by touch in Braille.

Braille displays have a number of cells and each cell has six or eight pins. These pins are electronically moved up and down, to create a Braille version of the characters that appear on the computer screen. Each Braille cell represents one character from the screen. An 80 cell Braille display represents approximately one line of text on a screen.

Before you purchase a Braille display, try several to ensure that the one you choose is comfortable to use and provides the functions you need. Many screen readers offer two outputs: speech and Braille. Depending on your requirements, using the speech output facility of a screen reader will be a cheaper option than harnessing a Braille display to it. We recommend you speak to the RNIB for advice as these devices can be expensive.

Notetakers
This portable device can be used as a word processor to take notes, record and organise information.

Some may also have features to provide a calendar, phone book, internet, email and run Windows based operating systems. They feedback information by speech output or via a Braille display.

Speaking alarm clock

I bought a talking alarm clock in a chinese aliexpress store. The talking alarm clock cost $ 10, plus free shipping to Russia. The seller sent the watch by regular mail.

The alarm clock was assembled with high quality, there was an instruction in Russian in the box, and the translation into Russian is quite passable. Interestingly, the instructions are for a different talking watch model. Pay attention to the photo – different models are indicated on the alarm clock box and in the instructions.

Apparently the Chinese did not really understand what the instruction was, and they put it in the box.

Alarm clock shows time (12 and 24 hour display can be selected), as well as air temperature. The numbers on the alarm screen are large, which is very good for people with poor eyesight.

There is a large button on top, by pressing which the alarm clock says the time in a voice, which is again very convenient in the dark. The voice with which the clock pronounces the time is somewhat funny – Russian in the Chinese manner. This is not a drawback, but even cool.

You can choose the sound of the alarm clock – a rooster, a cuckoo, some very familiar music and the usual squeak. The sound of the alarm clock is loud, but in silence it will generally “yell”. Unfortunately, the volume is not adjustable.

Talking alarm clock is powered by 2 AA batteries. Setting is done using three buttons on the back. The setting is a bit confusing, but by clicking on the buttons you figure it out quickly. The alarm clock was apparently made especially for Russia, as it reproduces the time only in Russian. There is no time to select and switch audio languages.

By the way, if you buy such a watch, then be sure to negotiate with the seller so that he sends you a version of the alarm clock made specifically for Russia, otherwise the Chinese are like that, they can slip the English-language model.

For such a price, the watch is quite good. The talking alarm clock was bought for my grandmother, she had asked for something similar for a long time. She is an elderly person and her eyesight is no longer very good. We were looking for a similar talking clock in stores in Russia and did not find it, so they ordered it in the aliexpress online store.

To buy all kinds of Chinese small things Aliexpress – the store is normal and the assortment pleases, you just need to choose the seller legibly.

Video review of a talking alarm clock.

Speaking hours

I ordered myself an unusual watch with a kind of alarm clock. Their unusualness is that the alarm melody can be recorded through the built-in microphone. If you don’t like music, you can also record commands. Nonsense, of course. But the children will probably be interested.

Traditionally, let’s first see how it arrived.

Watch in a box.

Inside the instruction in English (very helpful) and Chinese. The setting in the watch is slightly different from the usual one.

Display with protective film.

There is a microphone hole in front for recording. The dimensions of the device can be estimated in comparison with my hand, so it is clearer.

They are slightly larger than the standard Chinese clock with a thermometer and an alarm clock.

There is a blue backlight. The watch can measure temperature. In reality, they underestimate by about 0.8 degrees. For those who need this function, you will have to finish.First, you will need to drill holes in the back of the alarm clock for good air exchange. Secondly, correct the correctness of the thermometer by soldering the resistance. This procedure was described in detail in his review about the thermohygrometer. To correct the temperature, you will have to solder a resistance of 390 kOhm in parallel to the temperature sensor. All temperature sensors that I have come across have the same characteristics: at 22 degrees they have a resistance of 11 kΩ. When the calculated resistance is connected in parallel to the temperature sensor, the total resistance will decrease by 300 ohms.If the temperature is overestimated, you will have to select the resistance in series according to the same principle (an increase in the total resistance by 200 Ohm – decreases the readings by 0.5 degrees, a decrease – increases).

Top control buttons.

At the rear there is a 4.5V power supply socket and two switches: VOL volume (2 modes) and an alarm clock melody selection. Speaker holes are also on the back. You can select presets with the SOUND switch. As an alarm clock, you can play what has been recorded on the microphone.Or use the factory tunes.

Bottom anti-slip rubber bands and battery compartment. The device runs on three AAA batteries.

Batteries are not included.
We unscrew the four screws and see what’s inside.

A 2W speaker is attached to the back! Fantastic! :)))
And a piece of galvanized iron for stability.
The wires are very thin and short (as usual).

Scotch tape is glued to the control buttons (apparently for durability). The board is dirty in something.

The head board is attached to the front. It is made of high quality, but the soldering of the wires does not shine with the accuracy of execution. I didn’t like it very much. The impression is that the boards are factory-made, and the assembly of the product is in the basement.

The board is connected to the display using a polyethylene cable. How I hate this scotch!

Everything that I showed inside.
I’m going to the main thing.
The alarm clock can wake you up with a voice that you have recorded on the built-in microphone. These can be commands like “Rota, wake up” or “Honey, get up.” As you like. The recording is short, only 10 seconds. But the main thing fits. There is an alarm volume switch on the back. There are only two provisions. The volume has failed. I’m not sure if you will wake up at the loudest mode. But taking into account the fact that the playing time can be adjusted, I think that in the second minute it will still wake you up. In addition to the recorded sounds, standard alarm clocks such as a bleating goat and a cuckoo cuckoo are stitched inside. There are six melodies in total, but one is repeated twice (five in total). When the call rings, the display lights up. The duration of the glow is 9 seconds.
The screen displays the time, date, day of the week, temperature and alarm melody in the form of a symbol (either a microphone or a bird).
The clock (except for the alarm clock) has a timer function.
Another feature that I liked. In normal mode, the watch does not light up.
