Super star of bollywood: The Biggest Superstars of Bollywood Past-Present

Box Office Analysis: Salman Khan is the biggest Bollywood superstar at box office since 1947; Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Dharmendra follow! :Bollywood Box Office

The difference between a star and a superstar is the ability of the latter to ensure a good opening for most of his films and deliver big grossers that create benchmarks at the box-office. Over the last 75 years, Bollywood has seen several stars, however, there have been select few stars, who managed to get the superstar tag due to the culmination of record openers and big grossers. And without any doubts, the names which will find a place in top 10 superstars of all time in books of Bollywood history include Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Raj Kapoor, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan, as these seven names (in any order) have been consistent for a larger part of their career in delivering not just big hits but also record openers. The battle for 8, 9 and 10 spots will be between Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra, Mithun Chakraborty, Rajendra Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn, depending on the success count, box-office impact and longevity.   Over the last few days, social media has been buzzing about the superstars who have delivered maximum highest grossers of the year since the time India became Independent i.e. 1947. We at Bollywood Hungama have come up with the list of superstars with maximum highest grossers of the year, which would give a sense of who has dominated box-office like never before in their career.

Hrithik Roshan is the most successful actor who has made his debut in the last 20 years. Well, going a step further, it wouldn’t be wrong to already label him one of the most successful superstars, as in a short career of merely 20 years, he has delivered as many as 4 highest grossing films of the year, standing tall in front of his seniors like Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Govinda, Sunny Deol and many more. Though the volume of releases is an issue, he is probably the only actor in the last 25 years who has stood tall in front of the three mighty Khan’s – Salman, Shah Rukh and Aamir – when it comes to delivering the big grossers/blockbusters at regular intervals. His four highest grossers of the year include Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai, Koi Mil Gaya, Dhoom 2 and War.

At number five is a tie between the HeMan of Bollywood, Dharmendra and the global giant, Shah Rukh Khan with five highest grossing films of the year each. While Dharmendra’s top grosser of the year include Pathhar Ke Phool, Ankhen, Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay and Hukumat; Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Devdas, Veer Zara and Om Shanti Om are Shah Rukh Khan’s highest grossing film of the year. Both the superstars command terrific fan following, and with some gas still left in Shah Rukh Khan’s tank, he stands a chance to go a notch above Dharmendra in this aspect before the end of his career. While Dharmendra has the record of being the superstar with maximum longevity in his career spanning over 3 decades as male lead, Shah Rukh Khan is undoubtedly the biggest movie star of Indian Cinema in the overseas market. More on this soon, when we speak of worldwide grossers. Raj Kapoor too has five highest grossers of the year in capacity of an actor and 2 highest grossers of the year in capacity of a director. His highest grossers post-Independence include Barsaat, Awaara, Shree 420, Anari and Sangam whereas his highest grossing film of the year as director includes Bobby and Ram Teri Ganga Maili, thereby becoming a rare all-time great to attain this feat in the capacity of an actor as well as a director.

While Amitabh Bachhchan is undoubtedly the biggest superstar of Hindi Cinema, it’s a rather surprising discovery of him having 6 highest grossing films of the year under his kitty, far off from the name topping this list. Nonetheless, what gives the lead to Sr. Bachchan to be an all-time great is the fact that most of his hits have garnered bigger footfalls than highest grossers of the stars from modern time, and that too with films opening at record numbers despite releasing in a short span of time. His six highest grossing films of the year include Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, Sholay, Amar Akbar Anthony, Muqqadar Ka Sikander, Suhaag and Coolie.  While these stats put him at number 4, Amitabh Bachchan is an all-time biggest megastar, who commands a terrific success ratio, a huge blockbuster ratio and maximum number of films that have opened to 100% occupancy. In terms of raw fan following, he is undoubtedly the biggest ever Hindi film star followed by Dharmendra and Salman Khan.  This isn’t a loosely used statement, but backed by historical data, facts and on-ground hype for the respective stars.

Aamir Khan is the modern day name for quality cinema and it’s not surprising to see as many as seven of his films becoming the highest grosser of the year in a career spanning 32 years. Like Shah Rukh Khan, even Aamir has a lot of gas left in his tank, and stands a chance to jump the ladder further. His highest grossers of the year include Dil, Raja Hindustani, Ghajini, 3 Idiots, PK, Dhoom 3 and Dangal. He is a modern great and is definite to find a spot in names of people who have redefined Hindi Cinema with quality content. We place our bet on Laal Singh Chaddha to emerge the HGOTY of 2021.

The thespian of cinema, Dilip Kumar is remembered for his acting and script selection. On digging through the archives, we discovered that the mega-movie star has delivered 9 highest grossing films of the year and that too with a career of less than 65 Hindi films. His highest grossing films of the year include Jugnu, Shaheed, Aan, Madhumati, Mughal-E-Azam, Ganga Jamuna, Kranti, Vidhata and Karma. His record stood tall for over 30 years, which speaks volumes about his dominance, before one man came and shattered all records in 2017.

Salman Khan is the perfect example of a superstar with raw stardom, whose fan following will stay intact irrespective of the film’s quality. And to have such a loyal fan following in the social media age is in itself an achievement. In his career spanning over 30 years, he has delivered 10 highest grossers of the year, which is a record for any actor in the history of Indian cinema. With some gas still left in the tank, he stands a chance to add a film or two more to the list, making him out of reach for most of the actors in today’s time. It was a surprise for us to discover this, but well, Salman has never really broadcasted his achievements in the media and hence, everything comes across as a surprise. His 10 highest grossers of the year include Maine Pyar Kiya, Saajan, Hum Aapke Hai Koun, Hum Saath Saath Hai, No Entry, Dabangg, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Tiger Zinda Hai. He stands tall against the stalwarts of Bollywood indeed.

From the current lot of actors, Ajay Devgn got his first highest grosser of the year in 2020 with Tanhaji and Akshay Kumar is yet to open his account when it comes to delivering highest grossing film of the year. Rajesh Khanna on the other hand has 2 highest grossing films of the year in Aaradhana and Haathi Mere Saathi. Sunny Deol too is in the list with 2 highest grossers of the year in Border and Gadar.

Stay tuned for detailed analysis of all the top actors and an in depth account of all HGOTY since 1947 in part 2 of this series.

10 Most popular and successful heroes who are the biggest stars of Bollywood ever – My Words & Thoughts

The story of Bollywood cinema started during British era in India. From silent movies to talkies and to modern digital, Bollywood has witnessed a slow development. Now Indian film industry, especially Bollywood is one of the biggest money spinning business in the country and also rated as the top one among different entertainment sectors – Bollywood cinema. Needless to stay, though a film needs different parts to be integrated in a proper way, with thousands of artists involved with it, hero of the movie stands tall among all. Yes, when we discuss about a particular movie, we always credit it as hero’s movie. Yes, a movie spins around the hero and he is the most important factor. It also directly affects box office collections, no one can deny.

Over the decades many heroes have entertained us, and a very of them are very close to our hearts. Some heroes created new benchmarks for younger artists to follow. In this topic, I shall list 10 of the most popular and successful superstars of Bollywood cinema. While most of them have ‘superstar’ tag added to their names, there are quite a few more who created a niche of their own long back in the 1960s, before superstars came into exist.

1. Amitabh Bachchan – The angry young man

The second superstar of Bollywood cinema, he gave new definition to Bollywood screen gods. He is a bit weak in romantic roles, comparing with other genres he tried on Bollywood. Since mid-1970s, he fully dominated Bollywood screen for the next one decade, mostly with his masala pot-boilers, entertaining masses. He has been a master of action and comedy, and through the movies like Zanjeer and Deewar he not only proved to be the perfect action hero of Bollywood, but also as the second Superstar of Indian cinema. Sholay, Amar Akbar Antony, Kalia, Abhimaan, Coolie, Kabhi Kabhi, Silsile, Don, Muqadar Ka Sikander, Yarana, Satte Pe Satta, Laawaris, Desh Premi, Agneepath, Sharabi, Khuda Gawah, Namak Halal, Trishul, Shaan etc are among his major films during his younger days.

During his second innings too he gave stunning and award winning performances through his roles in Black, Pa, Piku, Badla, Pink etc. Though he did many movies since mid-1990s, it was only with mid-2000s he started giving hits as a solo hero, and many of them gave him National Film award. Black marked his new beginning of illustrious ‘award winning’ professional journey. Yet his performances in K3G, Waqt, Aankhein, Sooryavamshan and Mohabbatein remain memorable.  He is still enjoying the success streak at the age of 75+.

He is immensely popular through the television show, ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’, for the past two decades. He is a recipient of Dada Saheb Phalke Award, 4 National awards & 5 Filmfare awards for best actor, many other acting honours and three Padma awards including Padma Vibhushan. His screen pairing with Rekha is immensely popular, and he has frequently worked with his wife Jaya Bhadhuri, Rakhee Gulzar, Parveen Babi etc.

2. Shah Rukh Khan – King Khan of Bollywood

SRK in his iconic pose from his most popular film – DDLJ

King of Romance, Badshah of Bollywood, King Khan – he has been dubbed with different names by fans and media. No doubt, he is the biggest star and the most popular actor of Bollywood in the past three decades, and it’s not easy for any actor to keep this success of streak. Winner of 8 Filmfare awards for best actor, he shares this record with Bollywood legend Dilip Kumar. When it comes to romance, no other Indian actor can beat him. Started his career in year 1992, the anti-hero role in ‘Baazigar’ gave him the first major break. Yet he never tied himself to similar kind of roles, and moved towards romantic ones, where he created a niche of his own. In fact in the past three decades, he never struggled to get good roles, and always retained super stardom.

Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenga is one such milestone movie of his career which gave new definitions to romance. His screen pairing with Kajol is widely celebrated. He gave Bollywood blockbusters like Baazigar, DDLJ, Darr, Dil To Pagal Hai, Yes Boss, Pardes, Karan Arjun, Mohabbetein, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Don, K3G, Chak De India, Chennai Express, Devdas, My Name is Khan etc. Badshah, Paheli, Swades, Raes etc are other memorable roles.

3. Rajesh Khanna – The first superstar of Indian cinema

Rajesh Khanna in one of his most famous shots – A scene from ‘Kora Kagaz’ song of Aradhana

When the 1969 low-budget movie ‘Aradhana’ was premiered at theatres, Rajesh Khanna was not a familiar face to Indian audience. Though he has done a few movies earlier, he was still waiting for the major break. Once ‘Aradhana’ was released in late 1969, a new star was already born. He went on to give 17 consecutive hits at Bollywood (a record still to be broken), and also earned the fame of the first superstar of Indian cinema.

He tried with different genres of movies, and excelled in romantic movies, melodramas and family dramas. During the premiere of the movie, no one noticed the presence of Rajesh Khanna or cared about him. But at the interval, there were about 500 people surrounding him. He was already a star at film interval. Everyone was searching for him. After the movie release he became overnight sensation. After the blockbuster hit of Aradhana, he gave memorable performances in Do Raaste, Kati Patang, Anand, The Train, Bawarchi, Namak Haram, Aan Milo Sajna, Sacha Jhoota, Haati Mere Saati, Mere Jeevan Saathi, Amar Prem, Humsakal, Soutein, Daag, Apna Desh, Shehzaada, Joru Ka Ghulam, Mehboob Ki Mehendi, Safar, Red Roses etc. Among the lead actresses, his pairing with Mumtaz was most appreciated, followed by Sharmila Tagore.

His charisma started fading once his romantic image got overshadowed with the action roles of Amitabh Bachchan. Yet he delivered many hits in the 1970s and 1980s. He was a recipient of three Filmfare awards for best actor, 4 BFJA Awards for Best Actor and many other awards. During the early 1970s, the hysteria created by him was so huge that no other Indian actor has managed to reach that peak level till now.

4. Dilip Kumar – The tragic hero of Bollywood

Dilip Kumar in his iconic pose as young prince Salim in Mughal-E-Azam

The legendary actor is one of the finest artists Bollywood screen has ever produced. He, along with Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand fully dominated Bollywood screen in the 1950s and 1960s. Mostly associated with melodramas, he has given award winning performances in Devdas, Daag, Azaad, Naya Daur, Ganga Jamuna, Madhumati, Paigham, Kohinoor, Leader, Aadmi, Mughal-E-Azam, Sangarsh, Saudagar – the list is indeed big.

Among all leading male and female actors, Dilip Kumar is the only actor to win hat-trick at Filmfare awards in best actor/actresses category, and is also the actor with highest number of wins. With a total of 8 wins, he shares the record with Shah Rukh Khan, highest across both male and female categories. He created the hat-trick with the films – Azaad, Devdas and Naya Daur in the late 1950s.

Among all heroines, his pairing with Madhubala and Vyjayantimala was appreciated most. He has also frequently worked with Meena Kumari, Saira Banu, Waheeda Rehman etc.

5. Hrithik Roshan – Best find of the new millennium

Hrithik Roshan in his iconic pose from his most popular film, Kaho Na Pyar Hai

Hrithik Roshan started his career as a child actor in the 1980s. Later he made a smash entry to Bollywood with the rise of new millennium. His debut flick, ‘Kaho Na Pyar Hai’ gave him super stardom. After a few setbacks in the early phase of his career he bounced back with ‘Koi Mil Gaya’. Since then he has delivered super hits in frequent intervals. Like many superstars, he appears in lesser number of movies. Some of his other blockbuster hits are Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gum, Krishh, Krishh 3, Kaabil, War, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Agneepath, Super 30, Bang Bang, Jodha Akbar, Dhoom 2 etc. He also played male lead in critically acclaimed movies like Fiza, Lakshya, Mission Kashmir, Guzarish etc.

He is a recipient of 4 Filmfare awards for best actor in a lead role and many other awards, and has established as the most popular contemporary actor of new millennium. Unlike most Bollywood heroes, he has not established a star Jodi with any heroines of Bollywood. However his pairing with Aishwarya Rai is most appreciated (with two blockbusters to his credit), followed by Priyanka Chopra, Preity Zinta, Ameesha Patel etc.

6. Raj Kapoor – The showman of Bollywood

Mera Joota Hai Japani from Shree 420 – One of the most popular songs of Raj Kapoor

He was all-in-one – a very successful actor, producer and director, who enjoyed superstardom since early 1950s. As a filmmaker he also changed the face of Bollywood cinema, particularly in the 1950s, and played a magnificent role in popularizing movies among masses, when theatre was in prominence. He has been honoured with Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Padma Bhushan and many other honours. He is a recipient of 11 Filmfare Awards with 2 in best actor category. His films were popular not only in India, but also in many foreign countries predominantly in Russia. He produced, directed and acted in many social dramas like Sree 420, and also exhibited his talent as a romantic actor in quite a few roles like Sangam.

As an actor he mostly portrayed simpleton and innocent young man on celluloid, and stole everyone’s hearts with his natural acting skills and innocent eyes. In most of his films, he represented the lower/middle working class, and mostly chose social themes for his movies. As an actor his major hits are Sree 420, Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai, Sangam, Awaara, Chalia, Anari, Dil Hi To Hai etc.

With the early 1970s he almost switched over to filmmaking, and successfully launched his sons in Bollywood. He also made many movies with them (and also with his brothers) till his death. As a director, he gave blockbuster hits like Bobby, Prem Rog, Ram Teri Ganga Maili etc. Among all co-stars, his pairing with Nargis Dutt was celebrated those days. He also shared screen space with top actress Nutan in many movies in the 1950s, apart from Vyjayantimala, Waheeda Rehman, Padmini etc.

7. Dev Anand – The evergreen hero of Bollywood

Dev Anand from his most popular film, ‘Guide’

As stated earlier Dev Anand – Dilip Kumar – Raj Kapoor trio fully dominated Bollywood scene in the 1950s and 1960s. Like Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand too succeeded as a filmmaker. While almost all of his contemporaries of 1950s and 1960s had moved to character roles in the early 1970s with the rise of superstar Rajesh Khanna, Dev Anand was the only actor who was not affected by the hysteria of Khanna. That’s why he earned the title – Evergreen hero, and his pairing with much younger heroines like Hema Malini, Sharmila Tagore and Tina Munim also worked in the 1970s and 1980s. This versatile actor also experimented with different genres of filmmaking as an actor and director, and tasted success too.

Dev Anand is a recipient of two Filmfare awards in best actor category, apart from many other honours. His pairing with Waheeda Rahman, Vyjayantimala, Mala Sinha, Hema Malini, Sadhana, Nanda, Mumtaz, Zeenat Aman etc were well received. Some of his major hits are Guide, Jewel Thief, Johny Mera Naam, Hum Dono, Maya, Hare Rama Hara Krishna, CID, Baazi, Jab Pyar Kise Se Hota Hai, Tere Mere Sapne, Munimji, Kaala Baazar, Kalapani, Love Marriage, Duniya and many more.

8. Aamir Khan – The perfectionist of Bollywood

Aamir Khan appeared as a college student in his iconic film, Three Idiots

Aamir Khan worked as a child artist in Yaadon Ki Baraat in the 1970s, and then turned a full-time actor in the mid-1980s. After the huge success of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, there was no turning back, and in the 1990s, he established as a super star of Bollywood. He along with Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan form the successful Khan trio of Bollywood, just like Dev Anand – Dilip Kumar – Raj Kapoor trio of 1950s-1960s, and they fully dominated the Bollywood scene for the next three decades. The trio still enjoys the super stardom, and are currently the most paid actors of Bollywood too.

He started his journey with sweet romantic image, and with the late 1990s he started experimenting with other genres of film making. Since then he is not frequently working, and spends too much time for a single project, which earned him the title of ‘The perfectionist of Bollywood’. Needless to say it was any Aamir Khan movie which broke the 100-crore, 200-crore, 300-crore, 500-crore and even 1000-crore collection record in Indian cinema. Definitely Aamir is one of the finest actors Indian cinema has ever produced. He is a recipient of three Filmfare awards in best actor category.

Initially he was most successful with Juhi Chawla. After he turned selective in the late 1990s, he preferred to work with a new heroine in every movie, and tasted success in most of these cases. Apart from Juhi Chawla, he has delivered hits with Kajol, Madhuri Dixit, Rani Mukerji, Sonali Bandre, Karishma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Preity Zinta, Urmila Matondkar, Anushka Sharma, Gracy Singh, Katrina Kaif, Asin etc. Some of his blockbusters are Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Lagaan, Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, Dil, Dil Chahta Hai, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Mann, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Dangal, 3 Idiots, PK, Raja Hindustani, Sarfarosh, Rangeela, Dhoom 3, Gajani etc.

9. Salman Khan – The true hitmaker of Bollywood

Salman Khan as an Indian spy from ‘Ek Tha Tiger’

He is mostly associated with masala potboilers and action flicks and is best known for his entertaining skills, rather than acting skills. The total ‘Paisa Vasool’ actor of Bollywood for the past one decade, he remained one of the most sought Bollywood actors of the past three decades. He along with Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan forms the successful Khan trio of Bollywood. Among the three leading Khans, he appeared in maximum number of movies, and owns countless hits and blockbusters to his credit.

Though he is yet to receive a Filmfare award in best actor category, he has managed to deliver hits in regular intervals. In the past one decade, among the three Khans, he is most successful. Also, he is the most successful Bollywood actor of the decade of 2010s, with majority of his films shattering BO records. Though most of his movies in the past few years received mixed reviews, they have turned to be money spinners, thus making him the most valuable star of Bollywood cinema at present.

He has delivered hit movies aside Madhuri Dixit, Kajol, Preity Zinta, Sonakshi Sinha, Sushmita Sen, Karishma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Rani Mukerji, Priyanka Chopra, Urmila, Anushka Sharma and many others. Meine Pyar Kiya was his first film in the solo lead, and after its success there was no turning back. Like his contemporaries – Shah Rukh and Aamir, he also had a chocolate romantic hero image in the 1990s. Towards the end of 1990s, he started experimenting with comedies, and with the release of Wanted and Debangg, he moved to action-packed films. As an actor, many of his films of early phase of his career were critically acclaimed while his biggest blockbusters were released in the 2010s.

Some of his major hit movies are Meine Pyar Kiya, Baagi, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Debangg 1 and 2, Biwi No: 1, Mujhse Shaadi Karoge, Tere Naam, Bodyguard, Ready, Partner, No Entry, Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega, Karan Arjun, Hum Saat Saat Hain, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Judwaa, Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge, Tiger Zinda Hai, Sultan, Kick, Bharat, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya, Bajrangi Bhaijaan etc.

10. Akshay Kumar – Khiladi of Bollywood

Akshay Kumar in one of his famous roles – Air Lift

He joined films as an extra in the late 1980s and started receiving projects in the early 1990s. During the initial phase of his career he gained recognition through action films, and after the success of ‘Khiladi’ he came to be known as Khiladi of Bollywood. The only superstar who struggled a lot to achieve stardom, he is one of the most cashable actors of Bollywood right now. After receiving both success and failures till mid-2000s, he rose to stardom in 2007 with a series of hits. Since then most of his films were box office hits. In fact in the decade of 2010s, almost every Akshay Kumar has turned to be a box office hit. Now he is mostly associated with social dramas and biopics, and also tries comic roles occasionally.

He is yet to receive his first Filmfare award in best lead actor category. As an actor he has been successfully paired with Madhuri Dixit, Kajol, Ayesha Jhulka, Juhi Chawla, Sonali Bandre, Karishma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Preity Zinta, Vidya Balan, Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu, Shilpa Shetty etc. In the 1990s he worked in many multi-star cast movies, mostly in association with Saif Ali Khan.

Apart from Khiladi (which includes Mein Khiladi Tu Anari) and Houseful series, some of his major hits are Mohra, Dil To Pagal Hai, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Gold, Singh is Kingg, Dhadkan, Rowdy Rathod, Special 26, Welcome, Bhool Bhulayya, Namaste London,Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Padman, Jolly LLB 2, OMG, Holiday,Garam Masala, Hera Pheri, Phir Hera Pheri, Andaaz, Khakhee, Aankhein, Sangursh, Yeh Dillagi, Aitraaz, Airlift, Rustom, Good Newzz, Rowdy Rathod, Kesari, Mission Mangal, 2.0 etc.

11. Shammi Kapoor – The real rockstar of Indian cinema

Shammi Kapoor in his trademark hysteria style for ‘Yeh Chand Sa Chehra’ song from Kashmir Ki Kali

I take liberty to add one more star to the list as I couldn’t exclude any actors from the above list. The list of best ever and most popular Bollywood actors is incomplete without mentioning Shammi Kapoor’s name. He was a huge star of 1960s, just before the era of superstars began. He was the romantic face of Bollywood in the 1960s, and almost every film was a super hit, though he worked in only a few movies comparing with his contemporaries. Needless to say, most of his films were musical hits, and many evergreen hits of 1960s are credited to him in Mohammed Rafi’s voice. Before him, most of Bollywood actors were associated with serious roles and folk dances, while Shammi Kapoor started the trend of western dance moves in Hindi cinema. It was way ahead of his time, and many actors later followed the same suit.

He received a single Filmfare award for best actor for the movie ‘Brahmachari’. After delivering a series of flops throughout 1950s, he got his first career break through Tumsa Nahin Dekha, followed by Dil Dekhe Dekho and Junglee. What followed later was something which Bollywood fans never imagined. Hit movies with chartbuster songs – Rajkumar, Kashmir Ki Kali, Teesri Manzil, An Evening in Paris, China Town, Dil Tera Deewana, Andaaz, Professor, Bluff Master, Sachai, Prince, Badameez, Janwar, Pagla Kahin Ka etc got registered in his name.

He could handle both romantic and comic roles with ease, and he owned a huge fan following crowd in the 1960s before he started gaining weight. Among all actresses, his pairing with Asha Parekh was most popular. His pairing with Sadhana, Vyjayantimala, Saira Banu, Sharmila Tagore and Rajashree was also well received.

Before I conclude I would like to mention some of the most popular Bollywood heroes all-time. If I add 5 more names to the list, it should be Dharmendra, Shashi Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar, Ranbir Kapoor and Govinda. Guru Dutt, Ajay Devgan, Manoj Kumar, Vinod Khanna, Anil Kapoor, Amol Palekar, Saif Ali Khan, Shahid Kapoor, Ayushman Khurrana, Sushant Singh Rajput, Sanjay Dutt, Sanjeev Kumar, Ranveer Singh, Rajkummar Rao, Varun Dhawan, Sunil Dutt, Sunny Deol, Raaj Kumar etc are a few more successful lead actors belonging to different generations.

Please note: I have prepared this list purely based on popularity and stardom of Bollywood heroes and box office success of their movies. It is nothing related to the real talent of actors. Otherwise I would have added a long array of award winning actors, mostly known for playing supporting roles.

Bollywood’s First Superstar and the Ultimate Method Actor

Bollywood‘s first superstar, veteran actor Dilip Kumar passed away in Mumbai after being admitted in the hospital due to age-related medical issues. Dilip saab, as he was fondly called, was a class act who introduced the concept of superstardom to the Indian film industry. Eloquent, regal and emotive, Dilip saab conquered as the tragedy king, taking a permanent place in audiences’ hearts.

One of 12 children, Dilip saab was born as Yusuf Khan in Peshawar (now in Pakistan) on December 11, 1922, to Lala Ghulam Sarwar, a fruit merchant. The Sarwar family owned orchards in Peshawar and Deolali (Nasik), and so Yusuf’s schooling happened at Barnes School in Deolali.

During the late 1930s, the Sarwar family migrated to Mumbai, but the new place couldn’t hold young Yusuf’s attention for long; he soon relocated to Pune. Though initially expected to take care of the family business, Yusuf’s life changed forever after a chance encounter with the then reigning queen of Indian films, Devika Rani.

Buoyed by Devika’s faith in his persona and capacity as an actor, Yusuf began a scintillating journey in the industry that over the years delighted many a viewer.

It was a conservative time when a moniker like King Khan would not register as much adoration as it does now; business experts suggested Yusuf adopt a name that would appeal to a wider audience. Thus was born Dilip Kumar the actor, an identity that would come to define more than just a Bollywood actor, but a craft in itself.

Dilip Kumar got his first film, Jwar Bhata, in 1944, directed by Amiya Chakravarty. It turned out to be a perfect launch-pad for him as he was noticed by several producers and directors. By 1952, he would make films such as Jugnu, Shaheed, Mela, Aan, Daag, Arzoo and Deedar. In just eight years, Dilip had become a star with an enviable career.

But he was only getting started. In the years that followed, Dilip saab gave us such gems – Devdas (1955), Azad (1955), Naya Daur (1957), Madhumati (1958), Paigham (1959), Kohinoor (1960), Mughal-E-Azam (1960) and Ganga Jamuna (1961). If Dilip was a star in his first decade as an actor, the next decade brought on a superstar.

In 1966, Dilip broke many hearts when he married fellow actor Saira Banu, a relationship that only seemed to grow more endearing over time.

In the following decade, Dilip saab continued to churn out hits including Leader (1964), Dil Diya Dard Liya (1966), Ram Aur Shyam (1967), Admi (1968) and Gopi (1970), continuing his domination over the box-office.

However, other actors were starting to catch up. Actor Rajesh Khanna was becoming popular, emerging as the master of romance. In years to come, he would take over the superstar tag, and later, so would Amitabh Bachchan with his ‘angry young man’ act.

With tragedy giving way to romance and then anger-spurred aspirations, Dilip Kumar took a five-year break from films in 1976. When he returned, he came back with powerful character roles in Kranti (1981), Vidhaata (1982), Shakti (1982), Mashal (1984) and Karma (1986).

By this time, he was 64 and acknowledged the twilight of his career. In 1991, Saudagar would prove to be his last memorable film though his starred in his last film – Qila – seven years later.

In 1994, Dilip saab was conferred with the highest award in Indian cinema, the Dadasaheb Phalke award. The Pakistani government also honoured him, with Nishan-E-Imtiaz in 1998.

A method actor who gave no less than his finest performances time and again, Dilip saab has became an institution unto himself. But it wasn’t just his professional life that commanded respect; Dilip as a person is also widely regarded. Sayajit Ray, in fact, once said he had a great history as a person and an actor. Many even see his onscreen persona as an extension of his off-screen life. And it is from this high pedestal that Dilip saab still commands his superstar status, one that will be almost impossible for any other Indian actor to scale.

Bollywood superstar’s son walks out from jail in drugs case

NEW DELHI (AP) — Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan’s son walked out of jail on Saturday and was greeted with dancing and firecrackers, over three weeks after his arrest during a drug raid on a cruise ship party in Mumbai, the country’s financial and entertainment capital.

The Bombay High Court granted bail to 23-year-old Aryan Khan on Thursday but he spent two more nights in the city’s Arthur Road jail because his papers did not reach the prison authorities by the deadline of 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Hundreds of fans of Shah Rukh Khan, who found himself at the center of a boycott campaign on social media due to the high profile drug case, lined up to greet Khan as he arrived at his home in Mumbai. Some danced and lit firecrackers in jubilation.

Khan and seven others were detained on Oct. 3 when narcotics agents raided a party and seized drugs on a luxury cruise ship off the Mumbai coast. He was held in the jail since Oct. 8.

India’s narcotics agency said it has evidence in the form of WhatsApp messages that Khan was involved in illicit drug dealings.

Mukul Rohatgi, Khan’s lawyer, told the court that the agency did not find any drugs on Khan and allegations that he was in contact with drug dealers were untrue. He called the arrest “arbitrary” and said the agency did not conduct a medical examination to show he had consumed drugs.

The case has dominated headlines and social media in India, with fans of the actor demanding Khan’s release while others calling for a boycott of his father’s films.

The 55-year-old megastar is India’s most loved actor and is known as the “King of Bollywood.” He has starred in more than 105 movies over nearly three decades.

In September last year, some of Bollywood’s most prominent stars were questioned by the narcotics agency in connection with the death of famous actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Rajput died by suicide and doctors and police ruled out drugs.

NEW DELHI

An Indian court on Thursday granted bail to Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan’s son in a high-profile drug case that led to the actor finding himself at the center of a boycott campaign on social media.

The Bombay High Court said it will release a detailed order on Aryan Khan’s bail on Friday, which means he is expected to spend another night in jail.

Khan, 23, and seven others were detained on Oct. 3 when India’s narcotics agents raided a party and seized drugs on a luxury cruise ship off the Mumbai coast. He has been held in Mumbai’s Arthur Road jail since Oct. 8.

The case has been going on for three weeks and India’s narcotics agency says it has evidence in the form of WhatsApp messages that Khan was involved in illicit drug dealings.

On Thursday, lawyer Anil Singh, who appeared for the agency, told the court that Khan had a history of consuming drugs and has been in contact with peddlers.

Arguing on behalf of Khan, lawyer Mukul Rohatgi told the court that the agency did not find any drugs on Khan at the time of his arrest and allegations that he was in contact with drug dealers were untrue. Rohatgi called Khan’s arrest “arbitrary,” adding that the agency did not conduct a medical examination to show he had consumed drugs.

The agency had last week opposed Khan’s bail plea for the second time, saying it would affect their investigation because he could tamper with evidence and influence witnesses.

The case has been dominating media headlines for weeks and has divided social media in India, with fans of the actor demanding Khan’s release while others calling for a boycott of his father’s films.

On Twitter, Khan and his father’s name have been trending alongside hashtag #BollywoodDruggies. India’s freewheeling TV news channels have also given wall-to-wall coverage to the case, with many of them siding with the narcotics agency.

Shah Rukh Khan has made no official statement but many Bollywood stars have come to his side.

The 55-year-old is India’s most loved star and is known as the “King of Bollywood.” He has starred in more than 105 movies over nearly three decades.

In September last year, some of Bollywood’s most prominent stars were questioned by the narcotics agency in connection with the death of famous actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Rajput died by suicide and doctors and police ruled out drugs.

90,000 How the king of Bollywood could earn more than Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise in India

Photo by Aalok Soni / Hindustan Times via Getty Images India’s most popular film actor has for years rejected offers from American producers and refused to leave Bollywood. Now Hollywood has come to him. India, which produces more films than any other country, is the new battleground for streaming services willing to pay local stars millions of dollars to promote.
India’s most popular movie star is doing her best not to sit idle.Locked at home with much of the country, Akshay Kumar is filming commercials for television, using his niece as a cameraman. He constantly speaks on the phone, while simultaneously refining scenarios and coordinating the allocation of $ 4.5 million to help the victims of the pandemic. He runs TV marathons and binges watching Netflix’s The Paper House and Life After Death, The Family Man on Amazon, and for his seven-year-old daughter he plays a baking show called Sugar Rush. For a superstar and someone who has built a lucrative business outside of Hollywood, gear choices can seem odd.But these are unusual times, even for the king of Bollywood. Kumar turned down offers from American producers for decades, but then changed his mind and signed a deal last year to film a new Amazon Prime series called The End. “Everyone has to keep up with the times,” Kumar says during an hour-long Facetime interview from his apartment, taking occasional breaks to calm the kids down. – From scripts and stories to technology, filming and audience. The number of zeros in the checks I receive has changed.Everything has changed”.

Advertising on Forbes

The deal, under which Forbes believes Kumar will receive $ 10 million, is entirely driven by changes in the balance of power in the American film industry. After taking the lead in Hollywood, northern California IT giants rewrote the industry rules in their country and seized the moment to switch to India, the world’s second largest film market. Indian movie fans have long been a mystery to the top film studios in the United States: they certainly go to the biggest American blockbusters, but they show much more loyalty to local films.India produces more films than any other country, and last year achieved a record combined box office of $ 1.3 billion. Hollywood’s Avengers: Endgame broke the world box office record last year. However, Bollywood dominates the top 10 highest-grossing films with six films. Large IT companies are interested not so much in cinemas as in their target audience, for which their business models are designed. India has 1.35 billion people, most of whom are under 35.According to research firm Media Partners Asia, it is this population that will almost triple the online video market over the next five years to reach $ 4 billion. Amazon and Netflix launched streaming services in India in 2016 and began offering original Indian content in 2017. and 2018 respectively. According to a report from consulting firm Omdia, these companies already produce 10% of all original films in India and have spent more than $ 500 million on local content production in the past two years. The amount is expected to be similar next year. “Amazon and Netflix are in a race to localize content in India,” said Tony Gunnarsson, one of the Omdia analysts who contributed to the report. – Localization is extremely important everywhere, but especially in Asia. It’s not just about dubbing or subtitling in the local language. ” This means that Kumar becomes an extremely valuable player – and can pick the best deals. The Indian superstar is ranked 52nd in this year’s 100 Highest Paid Celebrities with $ 48 million in pretax income. He did not make most of this money in Hollywood. Kumar was born in 1967 and raised in Punjab into the family of an accountant and housewife. Despite modest incomes, the family went to the movies every Saturday. Akshay loved martial arts movies: first it was Bruce Lee, then Jackie Chan, and later more popular action heroes like Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. As a child, the boy devoted more time to karate and taekwondo than to school: his father even borrowed money so that he could study Thai boxing in Thailand for five years. Returning to Mumbai at 22, Kumar began teaching martial arts and modeling to make a living. He quickly realized where there were more opportunities: teaching Muay Thai brought him $ 66 a month, and in modeling, he could earn four times everything in three hours. “I’m lucky they liked my looks,” says Kumar. In 1992, Kumar made his film debut: Bollywood director and producer Pramod Chakravorty invited him to the lead role in the melodrama Waterfall of Love.Less than a year later, Kumar rose to fame for his role in the musical thriller Unsuccessful Kidnapping, which defined his career as an action movie actor. “I came into this industry thinking I just want to make money. I just wanted to make about ten crores rupees (about $ 1.3 million today), that’s all. But I’m a real person, and when I made my first ten crores, I thought, why not make one hundred crores ($ 13 million), ”he confesses with a slightly embarrassed smile. “To be honest, there was no stopping me.”Kumar’s lavish royalties at home are in stark contrast to the plight of most foreign stars who need to be successful in Hollywood in order to count on the same sums. Kumar raises $ 13 million in advance for films like Bell Bottom and Bachan Pandey and has made more money this year than Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. He makes even more money on projects where he decides to take a risk and give up his salary in favor of a share of the proceeds – this scheme made the leading actors in Hollywood rich until American studios abandoned it.Now Hollywood itself goes to Kumar with a checkbook in hand. Or at least New Hollywood, the next strategy that satellite operators used when they entered the Indian market and invited such stars as Salman Khan and Amitabh Bachchan to increase their ratings.

Amazon hopes that Kumar’s fame will help promote Prime Video in the world’s second largest TV market and support the streaming business, which in the West lags behind Netflix in terms of subscribers and popularity.Kumar is not the only celebrity to strike a similar deal. Netflix has hired Indian stars Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui for the first-ever original Sacred Games TV series. Amazon has recruited Abhishek Bachchan, son of Amitabh Bachchan, for the lead role of Breathe. Kumar during the announcement of the upcoming TV series The End. (Sujit Jaiswal / AFP / Getty Images) “It’s all about what people want to see,” said James Farrell, vice president of Overseas Original Films at Amazon.- If they want to see Akshay Kumar in a multi-part adventure thriller, who am I to refuse them? It may not be cheap, but it’s worth it. ” Amazon did not disclose the number of its subscribers in India. The company only reported that the majority of Indian subscribers buy Prime for streaming and not for free shipping and other bonuses. This strategy seems to be working. Analysts at Media Partners Asia predict that Amazon will have 17 million paying subscribers in India by the end of the year. Only Disney + Hotstar has more – the service has attracted 18 million subscribers, in part thanks to the rights to broadcast cricket matches.Netflix lags behind with 5 million subscribers: India is one of the few markets where it is not the largest player in the streaming market. Since the launch of Prime in India, Amazon has released 16 original TV series, including musicals, melodramas and thrillers. Inside Edge, a drama about a cricket team, was the first Indian show to be nominated for an International Emmy Award for Best Drama Series. Last year, Netflix launched a cheaper smartphone-only plan in India. The company hopes this will help it compete with less expensive services from Amazon and Disney. Disney + Hotstar will be able to reach 100 million subscribers in India by 2025, according to a report by Media Partners Asia. “In India, the potential for growth is enormous and largely underestimated,” says Kumar. He admits he was pushed into the Amazon deal by his teenage son, who asked why he wasn’t working on an online series. “The Indian audience has matured a lot, and the local content has changed a lot, and I want to participate in this process.”

90,000 Dimple Kapadia – Bollywood superstar who married at 15 – Bollywoodtime.ru

The final scene of the movie “Bobby” could not hide the wedding henna on Dimple Kapadia’s young arms. Long before Raj Kapoor’s blockbuster hit the screens, his teenage heroine tied the knot with superstar Rajesh Khannah , who was 16 years her senior.

When Dimple Kapadia entered his Aashirwad home, she had to leave her naivete at the door. Polka dot mini skirts and blouses gave way to chiffon sarees and diamonds, and the girlish mood was replaced by the balanced actions of married ladies.

But the girl could not stand it …

Ten years later, with a painful baggage of experience and two children in her arms, she left the citadel and re-entered the dusty floors of the studio. Started as a goddess of glamor, Dimple quickly moved on to mesmerizing roles in films Faith (1985), If Only … (1987), Crybaby (1993), Hopelessness (1993) …

Lessons Dimple learned from the losses – a broken marriage, the death of her two sisters and brother, as well as from the fact that she was on the quicksand of show business. “The whole story of my life is reflected on my face. There is no innocence or modesty in him. It says a lot, ”Dimple once said in an interview with India Today.

While director Mrinal Sen compared her to Sophia Loren and described her face as a “landscape of desolation,” Feroz Khan remarked, “No other girl shows so much pent-up aggression.”Even the early gray in her hair is a proud reminder of times gone through.

CHILD BRIDE

Dimple Kapadia was born on June 8, 1957 in Bombay. At birth, the girl was named Amina, but her name was Dimple (literally “Dimple”), because the baby had a pretty dimple on her chin. She was the eldest of four children; the rest are the actress sisters Simple and Rome and brother Suhail. I wrote about Simple in a separate article: Simple Kapadia: the unknown sister of Dimple Kapadia, who dreamed of repeating the success of her sister and the movie “Bobby”

She was signed by Raj Kapoor for the film Bobby (1973).But before Bobby Braganza became a fan favorite, superstar Rajesh Khanna made her his child’s fiancee. The two reportedly met during the flight. But this is not entirely true.

Recently I read an interview with Rajesh Khanna (which I will definitely translate for our website), where he admitted that he had known Dimple for a long time, practically from her birth, he had simply not seen for many years.

As author Yasser Usman mentions in his biography Rajesh Khanna: India’s Biggest Superstar , the actor looked Dimple in the eye and saw more than admiration in them. And soon he married a 15-year-old girl, betraying his ex-girlfriend Anja Mahendra, whom he had met for many years.

This is interesting: Rajesh Khanna’s first love, who was supposed to become his wife instead of Dimple Kapadia – Anju Mahendru

Six months after marriage, “Bobby” came out and Dimple won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress (along with Jaya Bhaduri for “Pride” ). To the audience, it seemed more like a farewell gift.

The “unequal” marriage soon cracked. Rajesh’s elusive fame, alleged alcoholism and abuse left his teenage wife with a gash in the heart. In April 1982, after several unsuccessful attempts to leave her husband, Dimple and her daughters, Twinkle and Rinke, who were then eight and five years old, respectively, left Aashirwad forever.

“Rajesh and I could not come to terms with the collapse of our marriage for a long time. But I understood that the longer I stay with him, the more I lose myself.I was willing to do anything … to get him to smile, ”she said in a 1985 interview with India Today.

SECOND COMING

Dimple returned to the cinema with Sea of Love Ramesh Sippy, although Wounded Lion (1984) came out first. Seas of Love premiered in August 1985 and became a big sensation thanks to its explicit scenes. Her lighthearted acting earned Dimple the Filmfare Best Actress Award.

“If …” (1987) Mahesha Bhatta (1987) was her journey down memory lane. The story of the outgoing superstar (Jackie Shroff) had a familiar tone. Bhatt then said: “I could not tell Dimple from Pooja, her heroine. She went through a lot in her life. She only needed to be herself. ”

This was followed by roles in art-house projects, including her National Award-winning role in the film The Crybaby (1993).

She recently starred in the thriller by renowned director Christopher Nolan Argument (2020).“It made me finally believe in myself,” admits Dimple. This year she starred in Ali Abbas Zafar’s controversial web series Tandav . Her future projects include the fantasy Ayan Mukherjee Brahmastra and the as-yet-unnamed comedy by Dinesh Vijana.

GOOD WIFE

Over time, the relationship between Dimple and Rajesh Khanna improved. Initial resentment gave way to newfound respect. When Dimple was asked why she would not marry a second time, the actress replied, “I am very happy and contented. Why would I marry again? Once was more than enough. ”

The Rajesh, who called her Dimpi, once said, “You know what? I still love my wife Dimple. ” The family rallied around Rajesh when he was diagnosed with cancer in 2011.

Dimple re-entered Aashirwad, giving him support and care. When Rajesh Khanna passed away on July 18, 2012, she was there.

Seven years later, on November 30, 2019, her mother Betty Kapadia took her last breath.Dimple is sure that all the worst is behind her and only a happy and peaceful life lies ahead. What do we wish her from the bottom of our hearts!

90,000 Bollywood superstar received five years in prison for road accidents – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

Indian cinema superstar 49-year-old Salman Khan was sentenced to five years in prison for a fatal road accident. The judge of the city of Mumbai admitted his guilt proven, although the actor himself insisted that at the time of the accident the driver was driving.

The incident happened in September 2002.Khan’s SUV crashed into a bakery at a speed of 90 kilometers per hour. At that moment there were several homeless people on the sidewalk near her. As a result, three people were injured, one died.

The trial began last year, despite the fact that the movie star was arrested literally the day after the incident and then released on bail. For more than 10 years, the prosecution could not find a “clue” – the actor claimed that he did not drive the car at the time of the accident, his driver, in turn, said that the accident was due to a bursting wheel and loss of control.

As a result, the investigators were able to restore the complete picture of what happened. They proved that on the day of the tragedy, Khan spent a long time in a bar with his cousin, and then got behind the wheel of his car and drove at high speed through the prestigious Bandra West area. The survivors also spoke about the actor’s drunken state.

– After listening to all the arguments, I came to the conclusion that all the charges against Salman Khan are proven. You drove a car without a license, and in a state of strong alcoholic intoxication, – quotes the judge of The Guardian.

Prosecutors demanded 10 years in prison for the actor. But the lawyer referred to the poor state of health and active charitable activities of his client.

The actor’s trial became one of the most resonant in India. The verdict was awaited not only by millions of fans of the superstar, but also by the film studios, which have already begun to calculate the losses due to the disruption of filming.

Salman Khan came to cinema in the 1980s and has appeared in over 100 films. In addition, he is a TV presenter, singer and producer.More than 20 prestigious film awards have been awarded to the actor.

In the past two years, Khan became the second Indian actor to receive a prison sentence. Previously, Bollywood action star Sanjay Dutt was convicted of possession of weapons that were used in a series of terrorist attacks in Mumbai in 1993.

He had everything, and then he lost everything, almost in the blink of an eye. Kumar Gaurav , who turned 61 on July 11, has been awarded the dubious title of Bollywood’s most short-lived superstar.

When his debut film Love Story came out in 1981, I was a student eager to see this film. My friend and I had to go back to the cinema three times before we could get our hands on precious tickets on the black market.

“Love Story” didn’t impress me at all. This is such a cliché movie: banal, corny and awkward.Even the music of R.D. Burmana, who made a huge contribution to the film’s success, was unimpressed.

One of the songs, “What is your love”, was ripped off from the song ABBA “I have a dream” . As an ABBA fan, I was outraged.

But Love Story broke all records to become the biggest Bollywood star film of all time.

In the year of giant multi-star projects such as “Hot Heart” by Manoja Kumara and “Destiny” by Manmohana Desai, “Love Story” survived.

Gaurav’s father Rajendra Kumar was in seventh heaven.

My son has proven that he is an old-fashioned chip. My fans who supported and loved me also supported my son. What more can I ask for? – he said

Vijayeta Pandit , who played the main character in the film, recalled:

“I have never seen such hysteria in any actor. Wherever we went, Kumar Gaurav was surrounded by hundreds of female fans.Never since the days of Rajesh Khanna have we witnessed such glory. ”

After Love Story Kumar Gaurav has become Bollywood’s most talked about superstar. The producers were ready to do anything to sign Gaurav. And he took on projects as if there was no tomorrow.

15 months after Love Story came out, Your Promise (1982) came out. It was a better film than the first, especially in terms of music.

Songs with the voice of Amit Kumar and Gaurav’s restrained acting became a reliable continuation of the debut blockbuster. After that, the actor could not leave the house at all, as he was pursued by fans.

Following these works came the full-fledged musical “Zvezda” with vocals of Naziya and Zocheb Hasan. Despite the hits, the film flopped at the box office and Kumar began a black streak in his career.

His father, known in the 60s as “Jubilee Kumar” from a continuous hit streak, was very upset.

    Kumar Gaurav and Sanjay Dutt

He tried his best to revive his son’s career by supplying him with big budget films such as Lovers , Roman , Love and Blood , but to no avail.

In 1986, Rajendra Kumar produced Mahesh Bhatta’s high-profile project “Name” , but all the fame and fame for him was taken by Gaurav’s son-in-law, Sanjay Dutt .

In 1993, Rajendra Kumar again tried to resurrect his son’s lost glory with the film “Flower” . And again, failure.

    Kumar Gaurav and Padmini Kolhapure

Gaurav retired from the industry shortly after the release of the film “Stranger Among Friends” (2002). Fate has treated him unfairly.

Sanjay Dutt and Gaurav started their careers around the same time. Gaurav was left behind despite being a better actor than Dutt.

Drama “Birth” Mahesh Bhatta testifies that Gaurav surpassed even his superstar father in talent.

Kumar Gaurav and Sanjay Dutt years later

Today, 61-year-old Kumar Gaurav is far from the film industry.

“I have no regrets. And I don’t miss the industry. My glory was God’s grace and I am grateful to all my fans for their love for me.Today I like my life and I am very happy with it, ”said the former actor.

    Tabloid India by Shashi Tharoor

NEW DELHI – This February, at the age of 54, Bollywood superstar Sridevi Kapoor drowned in a bathtub at a Dubai hotel. The coverage of her tragic death in the press was another demonstration of all the negative qualities of the Indian media.Sridevi has made a stunningly successful comeback after a 15-year hiatus, appearing in two mega-hits over the past six years. She led a humble, decent life with her family – her husband, film producer Boney Kapoor, and her teenage daughters. She did not dress or behave in a way that would serve as fodder for the tabloids and provoke sensational speculation.

However, Sridevi’s death became the subject of disgusting publications and programs, especially on television, about what could have happened behind the closed door of her bathroom. One of the TV presenters even staged an attempt to drown in the bathtub. And the politician, famous for his passion for all conspiracy theories, went so far as to suggest some kind of deception here.

Welcome to the amazing information environment in India, where the fourth estate plays the role of witness, prosecutor, judge, jury and executioner at the same time. Too many channels are competing 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the same pair of eyes as well as Target Ratings (TPR), which is why television news has long ditched any claim to provide a public service.Instead, they explicitly favor sensationalism over substance. Indian television has become a literal embodiment of the old joke with puns: “Why is television called medium (in English, medium means both” media “and” medium-fried steak “)? “Because it is neither rare” (rare and light steak) nor well done (well done and heavy steak). ”

The situation is not much better with the print media.Newspapers are now competing in a fast-paced and player-filled media landscape. Here, not they, but television sets the pace. Every morning, newspapers should interest readers who already saw the news on TV yesterday. Instead of providing context, depth and analysis, newspapers explode with headlines that stimulate passions and negative emotions.

The results are troubling, to put it mildly. Broadcasting opinions is the cheapest way to fill broadcast hours, and the talkers get the highest ratings. This further increases the motivation to engage in sensational speculation, no matter how baseless it may be. This is exactly what happened in the case of Srivedi.

More fundamentally, the quest to beat TV with sensational stories has weakened journalists’ incentives to do the necessary preparatory work – investigating stories and verifying claims being made. This erosion of professional standards often turns newspapers into voluntary partners in manipulation through leaks and malicious allegations.Seeing the difference between facts, opinions and speculation, between reports and rumors, between information from sources and unsubstantiated statements – this is what is hammered into the heads of student journalism around the world. But these differences are no longer needed by the modern Indian press.

An unceremonious attitude to facts is compounded by a persistent reluctance to publish rebuttals. As a result, the blazing flames of sensational and unverified headlines start to cause untold damage. If rebuttals are published, they are either too inconclusive or appear too late to restore the reputation of innocent people.

I have experienced these negative features of the Indian media for myself, regularly receiving portions of speculation, rumors, accusations (or even worse) for the four years since the tragic death of my wife.Rather than displaying the restraint and caution one would expect from a responsible press covering life and death, journalists were easily thrown into unfounded accusations of murder or impulsive suicide.

The media trial of my wife’s death was fueled by politically motivated leaks and dragged on indefinitely. It turned into a show with voyeur TV talk shows discussing accusations and assumptions that were made without any evidence or even basic investigations.Malevolent statements were published without criticism, and editors were unable to ask the most basic questions about their veracity. And my experience is not unique.

Unsurprisingly, the credibility of the Indian media is declining. A friend of mine succinctly formulated this problem: “When I was little, my father did not believe anything if it was not published in the Times of India. Now he doesn’t believe anything if this was printed by in the Times of India. ”

All this should worry the sane Indians, because a free press is the lifeblood of our democracy.A free press is both the mortar holding the bricks of our country’s freedom in place and the open window embedded in the wall of those bricks.

Media should enable free citizens to make informed decisions about those who govern them and how they do it. By being critical of the actions (or inaction) of winning politicians, they must ensure that the people in power continue to be held accountable to those who elected them.

Instead, the Indian media today are constantly reporting one-day sensations that have no impact on the welfare of society. They constantly focus on the superficial and sensational. Thus, they reduce the quality of debate in society and abandon their duties as supporters and defenders of democracy. I am absolutely not calling for control of a free press (no Indian Democrat would make such a call). It is about the demand to improve the quality of journalism.

The government needs a free and professional media that demands honesty and efficiency from it, serving as both a mirror and a scalpel. A dull ax will not benefit society. If India wants to be taken seriously as a responsible global player and as a model democracy of the 21st century, we must take ourselves seriously and behave responsibly. And it would be good to start with our journalism, because this is the face of India, which is clearly visible to others, and by which – rightly or not – we are judged.
