Myanmar protesters string up women’s clothes for protection

Traditional clothes hang on a rope as protesters holding shields stand in line in the background during a protest against the military coup in Yangon, Myanmar March 6, 2021 in this still image obtained by Reuters from a video.

(Reuters) – Protesters in Myanmar have taken to stringing up women’s clothing on lines across the streets to slow down police and soldiers because walking beneath them is traditionally considered bad luck for men.

The wraparound cloths, known as longyi, are hung on washing lines. Sometimes women’s underwear is used too.

“The reason why we hang the longyis across the streets is that we have the traditional belief that if we pass underneath a longyi, we might lose our luck,” said one 20-year-old protester who declined to give his name for fear of reprisals.

“The younger generation nowadays doesn’t believe it anymore, but the soldiers still do, and it’s their weakness. So, we might gain more time to run if they come towards us in case of emergency.

Videos on social media have shown police taking down the lines of clothes before crossing them. Traditionally walking beneath items used to cover women’s private parts is not only bad luck, but emasculating for men.

Reuters was unable to contact police for comment.

For more than one month, protesters have demonstrated across Myanmar against the Feb. 1 military coup and the arrest of elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and hundreds of others. More than 50 protesters have been killed by security forces.

The lines of clothing do not stop police using teargas, rubber bullets and stun grenades. Some protesters have also been killed by live bullets. The army has said it has responded to the protests with restraint.

The army seized power alleging fraud in a November election won by Suu Kyi’s party. The electoral commission had dismissed its allegations.

Chicago police warn of string of Northwest Side carjackings, armed robberies targeting women

CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago police issued a warning to residents on the city’s Northwest Side after a string of robberies and carjackings that appear to target women.

Chicago police said it’s still unclear if it’s the same group of thieves committing all of the attacks, but there have been nearly half a dozen.

Two incidents happened Monday night within blocks of each other.

Investigators say in each instance, multiple offenders get out of a maroon SUV and approach victims in their cars or on the street. They then pull out a gun and demand the victim’s vehicle and other items, along with PIN codes to their cell phones and debit cards.

The Monday night incidents happened in the 1900-block of West Wabansia at around 8 p.m., and then less than an hour later in the 2100-block of West Moffat.

A security camera captured what appears to be the suspect vehicle lying in wait. It doesn’t show the actual crime, but you do see the victim’s vehicle pass before the alleged suspects carjack her.

“It’s upsetting, certainly I hope the police are doing everything they can to mitigate,” said resident Kyoko Crawford. “It’s actually very alarming, this is pretty residential really nice neighborhood.

“I’ve always felt the most safe here so it makes me feel uncomfortable and nervous now,” said resident Dana West.

City data shows there have been more than 1,300 vehicular hijackings so far this year, up 1/3 from the same period last year.

There were also five armed robberies during the late night and early morning hours since Sept. 3, with the most recent in the 1900-block of West Wabansia. Monday night, just after 8, a 38-year-old woman was robbed at gunpoint of her cell phone and bag of camera equipment.

There are only vague descriptions of the attackers.

Police remind residents to stay alert and be aware of their surroundings.

Keep Your Style and Comfort in Order with Women’s Thongs & G-strings

Thongs & G-strings have become increasingly popular with time for a majority of reasons. Not only are they incredibly sexy with no rear coverage, but also super comfortable, especially when worn under certain outfits, such as tight jeans, yoga pants, or a bodycon dress. However, if you’re not sure and fickle minded about wearing them, we have got tons of reasons that are sure to convince you to wear them more often.

1. No visible panty lines: There is no denying that visible panty lines can degrade the overall appearance of your outfit, no matter how sexy it is. Thongs for women are a saviour here if you want to say goodbye to this problem altogether as these panties literally go invisible underneath your clothing.

2. High level of comfort: Some girls refrain from wearing a G-string or thong panty because they feel that they are highly uncomfortable, however, in actual, it’s the opposite. They have almost no fabric at the back, which provides you high level of comfort throughout the day.

3. Sexy appearance: G-strings are probably the sexiest panties of all that have incredible power of elevating your look. Not only do they make you look beautiful on the outside, but also on the inside, boosting your confidence level.

4. No clinging: One of the greatest advantages of wearing thong underwear is that it doesn’t ride or cling up. It is that one style of panty that remains static, so you can be at ease without being afraid of those panty woes.

5. Natural shape: Since thongs for women offer no rear coverage, they give your butt a more natural shape unlike other panty styles. If you want to embrace your body the way it is, girls thongs are a total win-win.

6. Variety: Last but not the least, you have tons of options when it comes to shopping thongs for women. From comfy cotton to exquisite lace fabric, there is a wide range of styles to choose from, so you have something for every outfit and mood.

After going through the reasons mentioned above, there’s a good chance that you might want to switch to thong panties & sexy G-strings. Plus, guess what? We have got newest styles for you to stock up from. Our panties are not only comfortable, but also easy to maintain. So, wait no more and get sassy with our womens thongs collection. And if you still need to know more about thongs, keep reading more as we attempt to answer some of your doubts.

FAQs

Q1. What is the purpose of a thong?
A1. Like mentioned above, the main purpose of a thong is to eliminate visible panty lines. Likewise, if you’re in hunt of something sexy, a G-string is the ideal panty to spice things up.

Q2. What’s the difference between a G strings and thong?
A2. G-string is a type of thong. It is basically a triangular piece of fabric with a string. On the other hand, a thong offers a little more coverage at the front and has a broader piece of fabric at the back. However, both offer almost no rear coverage.

Q3. Is a thong or G-string comfortable?
A3. Super comfortable. The no fabric at the back gives you utmost flexibility & breathability to keep you at ease all day long.

Man suspected in string of attacks on women in Bushwick, Brooklyn arrested

BUSHWICK, Brooklyn (WABC) — A man suspected in a string of assaults against women in Brooklyn is now under arrest and facing multiple charges.

Khari Covington, 29, is charged with seven counts for attacks in the subway system — at least five took place at the same station at Morgan Avenue.

He is also facing two counts of attempted robberies outside the subway.

Covington lives at a homeless shelter two blocks from the train station.

In each instance, a woman in her 20s or 30s was randomly attacked and punched in the head.

The same man is believed to be responsible for punching and choking a 27-year-old woman at Sunflower Glass Company Smoke Shop in Bushwick this week.

The victim says her back and neck are bruised and swollen.

Another victim, Bianca Fortis, was pummeled last week.

“I don’t know what justice looks like in this situation because I don’t know anything about the alleged attacker but I do hope that he gets whatever help that he needs,” Fortis said.

Sources say he was targeting light-skinned women.

One victim attacked in the Morgan Avenue subway station said she is traumatized from the attack.

“He didn’t say a word, just started punching me, like randomly beating me up,” victim Manal Guennad told Eyewitness News on Monday. “All I was thinking was, ‘Scream. Someone has to hear you. Someone must be around. Like, just scream as loud as you can.'”

While Guennad, Fortis and several other victims are grateful an arrest has finally been made, they say they wish police were more meticulous.

“I just think they did a poor job. I just think they could’ve done more, better,” Fortis said. “I don’t think they did their due diligence.

They are referencing an arrest police had made in connection with one of the subway assaults.

That man is 50 years old and the victims say they knew their assailant was much younger.

Charges against the initial suspect have been dropped.

Police say Covington has four prior arrests including assaults in September and robberies in 2013 and 2015.

String of ties for women’s soccer continues at Miami (Ohio)

Next Game:

at Southern Illinois University

9/12/2021 | 2 PM (1 PM CT)

OXFORD, Ohio — Once again, the scale was not tipped one way or the other.

For the fifth consecutive outing to start the 2021 campaign, the Bellarmine University women’s soccer team posted a tie, as the Knights played to a scoreless draw with Miami (Ohio) on Thursday at Bobby Kramig Field.

Bellarmine (0-0-5) has engaged in scoreless stalemates the last two games after 1-1 deadlocks in its first three outings. Miami (1-2-3) has been no stranger to playing even either, tying for the third time in four matches.

“You know what they say: You can’t tie them all unless you tie the first five,” quipped Knights Coach Chris Tinius.

Miami held a 12-7 advantage in shots, including 7-3 on frame. Junior goalkeeper Bailee Witt corralled seven saves for the Knights, who had a 3-2 edge in shots over the two overtimes.

“Actually, I thought we played with a better mindset today and didn’t sit back quite as much,” Tinius said. “Bailee did a great job with her opportunity today. We’ve got to convince ourselves that it’s possible to be organized and more assertive on the attack — they aren’t mutually exclusive. It’s been better in training. They can see it on film. We’re just waiting for it to translate in a game setting.”

Bellarmine will play at 2 p.m. (ET) Sunday at Southern Illinois.

Awesome Women Composers Part 2: String Quartet Edition

As part of our discussion on string quartets, let’s take a look at some by women composers ranging from the Romantic era to contemporary music.

Amy Beach (1867-1944)

Not only was Beach an extremely talented composer and pianist, but she was also one of the first female composers to successfully compose large-scale forms. Her Gaelic Symphony was, in fact, the first symphony composed and published by an American woman. Her Quartet for Strings, Op. 89, (1929) is a one-movement work that sadly remained unpublished during her lifetime.

The quartet begins with a slow, dissonant introduction that leads into the body of the work, which is based on three Inuit (a Native Canadian/Alaskan people) melodies. It is dissonant yet lyrical, harmonically sound yet ambiguous. The work is a masterful combination of art, folk, and American characteristics.

Elizabeth Maconchy (1907-1994)

Maconchy wrote an astonishing amount of chamber and orchestral works during her life, and her 13 string quartets are considered to be the highlight of her musical achievements. She composed String Quartet No. 3 in 1938, and it’s beautiful and haunting and dissonant and lyrical all at the same time. The work is one continuous movement (or the movements all flow together; I haven’t been able to find much information on that) that drastically and continuously changes. The opening is almost chorale-like before jumping into the energetic and contrapuntal section. An emotional song accompanied by harsh pizzicato chords finishes the work.

Maconchy’s daughter Nicola Lefanu also composed string quartets; check out her 2nd one here. You can also click here to learn more about Maconchy’s other string quartets.

Gloria Coates (b. 1938)

Coates is known for her experimentation with harsh sounds to create a new space of thought and beauty. Author Trevor Hunter captured the essence of her style in an interview with the composer:

For Gloria Coates, artistic expression is a spiritual necessity. She has great interest and significant participation in painting, architecture, theater, poetry, and singing—but it is through composing that she taps into a wellspring of abstracted emotionality that the others cannot reach. Whatever the veiled expressions of her work may be, there is an undoubted emotional richness present, which if not concretely knowable is at least viscerally felt by the audience. Canons constructed of quartertones and glissandos evoke gloomy instability, but also unearthly beauty.

Coates has composed 10 string quartets – Among the Astroids being the last in the early 1960s. Through glissandos, tremolos, intense dynamics, and other extended techniques (any unconventional method of playing a musical instrument), Coates has captured the feeling of a terrifyingly vast and beautiful space.

Check out that interview here.

Shulamit Ran (b. 1949)

Ran‘s third string quartet, entitled Glitter, Doom, Shards, Memory, was composed in 2012-13 for the Pacifica Quartet. The whole work is four movements, and they each have unique titles: That which happenedMenaceIf I perish – do not let my paintings die, and Shards, Memory.

Ran based the first movement on that phrase – “That which happened” – used by poet Paul Celan to describe the Holocaust. In the music, you will hear how “life, with its flow and its sweet normalcy, was shockingly, inhumanely, inexplicably shattered” through abrupt mood changes.

*Listen to the entire quartet here.

The short second movement imitates a machine-like waltz that, according to Ran, alludes to the guillotine. The movement gathers energy and momentum that is dark and unstoppable.

“If I perish – do not let my paintings die”, the third movement, embodies the quote by the German-Jewish surrealist painter Felix Nussbaum who, until he died in Auschwitz in 1944, continued painting. Ran said of this movement:

If the heart of the first movement is the shuddering interruption of life as we know it, the third movement tries to capture something of what I can only imagine to be the conflicting states of mind that would have made it possible, and essential, to continue to live and practice one’s art – bearing witness to the events. Creating must have been, for Nussbaum and for so many others, a way of maintaining sanity, both a struggle and a catharsis – an act of defiance and salvation all at the same time.

The quartet ends with a movement that directly references the remains and memory of the music.

Egidija Medekšaitė (b. 1979)

Medekšaitė has a unique compositional process that involves textiles. Each aspect of the weave and the yarn in the textile represents various melodic lines and harmonies. She combines these ideas with serialism (where each of the 12 notes in the chromatic scale is used as a basis for harmony and melody), minimalism, extended techniques, and Indian music techniques to create a new sound world in her compositions. Her string quartet, Megh Malhar, demonstrates these ideas. She said of this piece:

Megh Malhar is a Hindustani classical raga (a pattern of notes having characteristic intervals, rhythms, and embellishments, used as a basis for improvisation). The name derives from the Sanskrit word Megh, meaning cloud. This raga is associated with the time of oncoming rainy season and thunderstroms; legends say that it has the power of bringing on the rain clouds to the areas of drought where it is played. My intent for using this raga was to create a sight of myriad raindrops, where each drop is a microscopic reflection of the whole rain. Each performer plays various trills at a very slow tempo, to maintain this fragile sonic experience.

Caroline Shaw (b. 1982)

Composed in 2011, Entr’acte was Shaw‘s reaction to hearing the second movement of Haydn’s String Quartet in F major, Op. 77 No. 2. Her work is structured like a minuet and trio (a Classical era musical form based on a dance), but it’s full of subtle twists and turns that don’t mimic Haydn at all.

Full of musical sighs and a descending bass ostinato, it’s as though music from the Baroque and Classical eras has been unexpectedly transported to the 21st century. Listen to the section beginning at 6:19 for an example of this.

Jessie Montgomery

Originally written in 2006 (with revisions over the next 6 years), Strum is an exciting work full of what Montgomery calls texture motives: “layers of rhythmic or harmonic ostinati that string together to form a bed of sound for melodies to weave in and out.” The main texture motive is, of course, the strumming pizzicato that opens the quartet. American folk idioms combine with energetic dance styling to create a celebratory piece.
