Yet all too often, appreciation for teachers and the importance of their impact goes under-recognized. So, this Back to School season, we wanted to give teachers the recognition they deserve, and unite communities to support each other.”

Staples launches new policy to drive toxic chemicals out of office supplies, electronics, textiles, and other products
Media Release /
New commitment targets PFAS, organohalogen flame retardants, phthalates, bisphenols, and other dangerous chemicals for safe substitutionWASHINGTON, D. C. — Following the lead of other major retailers and answering consumer demand for products free from toxic chemicals, Staples today launched a new Chemicals Policy targeting the reduction and substitution of toxic chemicals including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
The Staples Priority Chemicals of Concern List includes dozens of toxic chemicals or classes of chemicals of high concern, including organohalogen flame retardants, ortho-phthalates, PFAS, bisphenols, parabens, formaldehyde releasers, and alkylphenol ethoxylates (APE’s), as well as the solvents methylene chloride, N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP), and trichloroethylene (TCE). It also prioritizes chemicals that are endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, mutagens, reproductive toxicants, neurotoxicants; and persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT) chemicals including those on more than a dozen authoritative lists.
The company states it will: “encourage our suppliers to work with their raw material suppliers to identify alternatives that are safer for our customers and the environment, using the most credible science and hazard evaluation tools available. ”
This policy applies to all product brands owned by Staples and to national brand products sold through U.S. Staples Business Advantage, staples.com, and Quill. It prioritizes hazardous chemicals in important product categories where toxic chemicals are commonly found, including disposable food ware, furniture and other textiles, electronics, thermal receipt paper, cleaning products, and office supplies such as 3-ring binders, pens, highlighters, and markers.
Mike Schade, Safer Chemicals Healthy Families’ Mind the Store Campaign Director, said: “Staples’ new chemicals policy signals a growing trend in the retail sector to stamp out classes of toxic chemicals, such as organohalogen flame retardants and PFAS, in food packaging, furniture, electronics, and other products. We congratulate the company on this important development. We urge Staples to take the next step by setting clear public benchmarks and timeframes for implementing its policy and to report on progress annually. ”
Mike Belliveau, Executive Director of the Environmental Health Strategy Center, said: “We greatly appreciate Staples’ leadership in phasing out whole classes of chemicals of high concern from its products. For example, by prohibiting the intentional use of phthalates in formulated products and office supplies, and many uses of PVC (vinyl) plastic, Staples is sending a strong market signal to its suppliers that only truly safe and sustainable materials and ingredients are acceptable to the company and its customers.”
Elizabeth Saunders, Massachusetts Director for Clean Water Action, said: “We’re proud to see Staples, a Massachusetts company, take real leadership in protecting customers from toxic chemicals in products. Retailers play a key role as gatekeepers–they can control whether the products that reach our homes and workplaces are safe or toxic. Kudos to Staples for taking that responsibility seriously.”
Staples is the latest retailer to announce a policy commitment to reduce toxic PFAS chemicals and other chemicals of high concern in consumer products over the past two months. This week, Lowe’s updated its chemical policy to reflect that it is banning the sale of indoor residential carpets and rugs containing PFAS as well as other hazardous chemicals in wall-to-wall carpet, paint, and fiberglass insulation as of January 2020. In September, The Home Depot announced it was phasing out the sale of all carpets and rugs containing PFAS and Ahold Delhaize launched a new safer chemicals policy restricting PFAS, phthalates, bisphenols and other chemicals in food packaging and other product categories.
Staples’ new policy comes less than three weeks before the release of the 2019 “Who’s Minding the Store?” retailer report card, which benchmarks retailers on their safer chemicals policies and implementation programs. Staples earned a D+ in the 2018 report card.
###
Safer Chemicals Healthy Families leads a nationwide coalition of organizations and businesses working to safeguard American families from toxic chemicals. The group’s Mind the Store campaign challenges big retailers to eliminate toxic chemicals and substitute safer alternatives.
Free Receipt Book Templates | Print 3-Receipts per Page – PDF
The receipt book template is an array of 3 receipts laid out horizontally that is commonly used in a booklet for multiple uses. If the receipt book will be placed in a binder, it must be ‘hole punched’ with a standard hole puncher (3 or 5 rings).
If the receipt will be given to a client after payment, a portion of the receipt should be kept for record-keeping. This can be accomplished by making a note of the receipt in a transaction booklet or by using carbon copy receipts.

1 – Acquire The Receipt Book Template For Your Use
The receipt book on this page is attainable in one of three file types; “PDF,” “Word,” and “ODT.” You can download one or all these versions depending upon your needs.
2 – Document When This Receipt Is Generated And Identify It
Once you access your file, fill in the “Date” of the payment being documented was received. It is often a good idea to make sure every document generated by an office has a unique filing number. This template assumes such a system is in place and reserves the “Receipt Number” line on the top right of the page so you may report it.
3 – Submit The Payment Record To This Form
The “Amount Received” line will expect the exact dollar value the issuing Party received produced on it. Consult your records then report this number by writing it out on this line then re-enter it numerically on the line in the parenthesis. After documenting the payment, tend to the “For Payment Of” by submitting a brief description of the merchandise or services that were purchased Now, the person who has accepted the payment on behalf of the entity receiving it should report his or her full name on the line labeled “Received By.’ Next, you will need to document the complete name of the entity or person who has submitted the payment on the line attached to the “Received From” line.
4 – Produce Additional Payment Details
Take a moment to attend to the last section of the receipt you are working on by filling the “Cash,” “Check,” “Credit Card,” or “Other” box to define how this payment was received. Notice that if an unconventional method was used (i.e. wire transfer, cashier’s check) you will have to define it on the line attached to the word “Other.”
Paper clips in the hands of a jeweler
Of course, any girl breathes unevenly towards jewelry, but still few decide to wear them every day, sometimes believing that they are inappropriate during the day or if a woman has not yet reached Balzac’s age. But we dare to remind that jewelry art is not only dangling clusters of sapphires and placers of topaz on necklaces.
Many designers have long been creating democratic collections, turning to quite utilitarian themes, such as cutlery, children’s toys, food or stationery. Back in the 70s, Jacqueline Kennedy wore a Chanel chain woven from famous French paper clips, combining it with a sophisticated but simple day wardrobe.
Canadian designer Lauren Klassen has also addressed this topic. This young and resourceful designer’s creations are characterized by a hooligan combination of precious metals with pragmatic things. She is inspired by simple objects that we come across every day. Cara Delevingne, Rihanna and Madonna have long chosen key earrings and pendants-clasps by Lauren Klassen.
The success of her new collection is predictable. Laconic bracelets and pendants, curious earrings and even a necklace will be an interesting addition to a simple silk blouse or a strict business dress. All jewelry is made of silver or gold and is neatly complemented with diamonds.
“I made 50 solid gold paper clips. It’s funny and ridiculous, but at first I myself could not distinguish them from real paper clips lying on my table. When the result looks so good, I understand that the risk is justified, ”says Lauren Klassen.Today, July 29, the collection will appear on the Moda Operandi website, with prices ranging from $ 400 to $ 5,000.

The invention relates to a paper clip for products in the form of a bag or sausage according to the preamble of claim 1, formed from these clips, a rod of clips according to claim 20, as well as a matrix for processing the clips according to claim 23.
In particular, the invention relates to a clip for products in the form of a bag or sausage, the packaging material of which is formed by at least a packaging film, the clip having a clip base and two clips adjoining in the same direction to the base and diverging from the base staples straight staple legs, the middle longitudinal axes of which and the middle longitudinal axis of the base of the staple are located in the same plane. In addition, the invention relates to a rod of staples from these staples, as well as a die for processing these staples.
Staples, in particular clips, of the type mentioned are used, for example, for sealing sausage packages. In this case, the sealing takes place with the help of special machines, such as clipping machines, combined with corresponding filling machines for feeding and filling the packaged product. To seal the sausage-shaped product, the braided portion of the packaging casing material is inserted into a paper clip, which is held, for its part, in a die, respectively, in the shape of the base of the clip. Then the staple legs are closed around the packaging braid by means of a die-movable stamp.
From the German registered industrial design
36, a paper clip of the above-mentioned type is known, which has a base and two paper clips adjacent to the base in one direction and diverging to the sides from the base of the paper clip straight legs, and the middle longitudinal axes of the legs of the clips and the base of the paper clip are in the same plane … In this case, the base of the paper clip runs straight, so that in a horizontal projection this previously known paper clip has the shape of the letter “U” with side tabs extending from the base of the paper clip.Although the corners in this known staple at which the straight base of the staple meets the straight tabs of the staple are rounded, these rounds have only a small radius of curvature. As a consequence, when the clip is sealed in the clip machine by means of, for example, a matrix and a stamp, a break can occur at these corners, which causes a crack inside the clip. This crack weakens the paper clip so much that it breaks even with a slight subsequent load and thus loses its locking function. The object of the present invention is to produce a clip of the previously mentioned kind, in which, despite the large clamping force and the accompanying significant deformation of the clip, the formation of a crack would be reliably prevented. In addition, an object of the invention is to manufacture a staple rod from such staples, as well as a matrix for processing these staples, in particular this staple rod.
With regard to paper clips, the above problem is solved in accordance with the characteristics of paragraph 1 of the claims.Preferred embodiments of the invention are set forth in dependent claims 2-19. In particular, a clip is provided for sausage-shaped or bag-shaped products, the packaging material of which is formed at least from a packaging film or continuous packaging tape or packaging fibrous material, the clip having a clip base and two adjacent in the same direction to the base of the clip and the straight legs of the clip diverging to the sides from the base of the clip, the middle longitudinal axes of which and the middle longitudinal axis of the base of the clip are located in the same plane, and this clip, based on this, is made so that the base of the clip has an arcuate rounding of the initial circle. This round shape of the staple base eliminates corner transitions between the staple base and the staple foot, so that a crack is reliably prevented during sealing. In addition, the clip according to the invention has a sparing effect on the packaging casing material, since the clip can optimally conform to the shape of the packaging casing material around the braided area. Thus, the clamping force, in particular the holding force, increases markedly. In addition, the round shape of the staple makes it easier to size staples to increasingly thinner packaging casings.
If the transitions from the base of the staple to both of the staple legs are smooth, in particular uniform, this further prevents cracking.
In addition, the aforementioned gentle wrapping of the packaging casing material in the region of the braid formed therefrom is also ensured by the fact that the transition of the base of the clip to the two adjacent clips of the clip occurs smoothly, in particular uniformly.
In principle, the paper clip according to the invention can have any desired cross-section.The most preferred embodiment of the paper clip is characterized by a cross-section that is substantially oval or elliptical. In this case, the oval can be made elongated, and preferably the length of the main axis of the oval is a multiple of the radius to the highest points of the ellipse.
In order to encode the paper clip by embossing the relevant information thereon, it is also preferred that the oval has straight, in particular flat, lateral longitudinal sides that run at least almost parallel to the major axis of the oval.As a consequence, the generated markings must be sized appropriately to be visible to the human eye. A stamp of a suitable shape may be provided to mark the arc-shaped rounding of the starting circle of the base of the clip.
In order to ensure uniform deformation of all sections of the clip, it is also preferred if the clip has substantially the same material thickness along its entire length.
The proposed paper clip can be made from a wide variety of materials and various blanks. Most simply, it can be made from wire, preferably aluminum.
For the production of a rod of staples from staples fastened to each other, it is preferable if at the open ends of the staple legs, connecting protrusions extending away from the axis of symmetry of the staple are provided. In this case, it is preferable if the connecting protrusions are bent outwardly, at least approximately at an angle of 90 °, preferably to the axis of symmetry of the clip. In addition, the planes of the connecting projections extending outward from the highest point of the arcuate curvature of the starting circle of the base of the clip may be located at least partially in the same plane, preferably perpendicular to the intersecting axis of symmetry of the clip. However, it is also possible to arrange these planes in two planes intersecting and forming an acute angle with the axis of symmetry of the paper clip.
When processing staples, in addition to the aforementioned danger of cracks on the staples after they have been deformed, it is also important that the separation of a single staple from the staple bar formed by these staples takes place, if possible, with little effort, and the resulting noise effect is negligible. … In order to achieve this goal, the proposed paper clip can have, inter alia, in the area of the end ends of the connecting projections diverging from each other to the sides – tapering, thinning in the direction of the end ends of the connecting projections. This tapering, in particular the thinning of the connecting lip towards its open end, reduces the sliding frictional resistance of the marking die when it hits the paper clip, since the connecting lips bent at a small radius facilitate the pressing of the convex die. In addition, when the paper clip is sealed, the top and the inside take partly the shape of a heart, while the connecting projections are punched inwardly bent. This increases the strength of the paper clip.
In principle, the thinning provided in the direction of the open ends of the connecting projections can be made using different geometric shapes. For example, thinning can be obtained by means of a form of execution having a wedge-shaped shape in plan view or by means of two facing concave curves. It goes without saying that any other design can also take place.
In order to securely seal a sausage-shaped or bag-shaped product, as already mentioned, the paper clip is plastically deformed around the ribbed section of the packaging casing material.Depending on the holding force limit, the resistance of the clip against the axial pulling of the clip away from the sausage-shaped or bag-shaped product is also determined. In addition, in order to obtain additional resistance in this case, provision can be made for an at least partially elongated profile recess to be provided on the facing planes of the base of the clip and the two tabs of the clip. Preferably, this profile recess extends over at least almost all of the facing planes of the base of the clip and both of the clips of the clip.
In order to further increase the resistance against axial pulling of the clip, a second groove can be provided along with one recess, whereby both recesses preferably run parallel and at a certain distance from each other.
Where there is only one recess, it is most preferred if it extends along the median longitudinal axis of the facing planes of the base of the clip and the tabs of the clip. If, on the other hand, two recesses are provided, they can extend on two sides from the median longitudinal axis and along the facing planes of the base of the clip of the two clips of the clip.
The recess is available in various forms. Most preferably, the recess is formed by at least something like a V-groove.
With regard to a rod made of staples, the above problem is solved in paragraph 20 of the claims. In both of the following paragraphs 21 and 22, preferred embodiments of the invention are set forth.
The inventive staple bar of interlocked staples, the description of which is given above in connection with the invention, is formed, in particular, by the fact that the staples are connected to each other in the form of a chain, preferably in one piece, by connecting protrusions provided at the open ends staple feet.
In order to facilitate the handling of the staples connected in a bar, it is also preferable to wind them on a reel.
As previously reported, staples can be of different sizes to meet different requirements for holding force, wrap diameter, etc. For each size of the clip, in particular the size of the clip, it is necessary to provide the appropriate tool, in particular the corresponding matrix. In the past, problems have often arisen in this regard when the wrong die was used to process a certain size staple.
As previously reported, staples may be labeled accordingly, which however may be misinterpreted or misunderstood by the service person. It is therefore advantageous if the reel is provided with at least a machine-readable identification mark. In this case, the paper clip processing machine can obtain the necessary information when reading the identification mark, and in the case of an erroneously connected matrix, it can issue an appropriate alarm and stop production.
With regard to the matrix, the above problem is solved by the features of paragraph 23 of the claims. In particular, for this purpose, according to the invention, a die for processing a paper clip is provided, wherein the holding clip at least partially has a base of the die which communicates with the arcuate rounding of the starting circle of the base of the clip. Due to the rounding of the matrix base, it increases in accordance with the size of the paper clip, i.e. the matrix is matched with each staple, so the so-called runout of the staple material beyond the permissible limit can be excluded.
It should also be recalled that the paper clip provided provides a linear path of movement for the closing (s) tool (s). In particular, the die can run straight, preferably vertically from above, onto an open paper clip located horizontally in the die. When the stamp hits the paper clip, the latter is fixed in the proposed matrix. As a consequence, in contrast to the prior art, lateral twisting of the paper clip can be avoided, thereby reducing product rejects. In addition, this also reduces the stress on the staple handling machine, and thus also reduces the costs associated with wear.
The following are other preferred embodiments of the invention, as well as two examples of the proposed paper clip and an example of the proposed matrix with reference to the attached drawings. Used in connection with the description, the terms “left”, “right”, “above” and below “refer to the illustrations in the drawings, provided that the figure and reference signs are normally readable.
FIGS. 1A-1D show various views, in particular sectional views, of a first exemplary embodiment of the paper clip according to the invention;
in FIGS. 2A-2D are various views or sectional views of the second example of the proposed paper clip and
in FIGS. 3A, 3B are the proposed matrix, side view, and also a perspective view.
Shown in Figures 1A to 1D, the first embodiment of the proposed clip 10 is made from aluminum wire or strip of aluminum sheet (however, of course, every other suitable material can be used to produce the clip 10).As shown in particular in Figs. 1A and 1C, the paper clip 10 has the shape of the letter “V”, and both clips 10, at least approximately the same along the length of the legs 12, 14, do not converge at an acute angle, but are connected to each other. with the other by means of an arcuate rounding of the initial circle. This arcuate rounding of the starting circle forms the base 16 of the clip 10. As also shown in FIGS. 1A and 1C, the transitions from the base 16 of the clip to both of the clips 12, 14 are uniform and smooth, i.e.i.e. without kink, etc. From the arcuate rounding of the initial circumference of the base 16, the staples emerge upward and at the same time, both legs 12.14 of the staple diverge from each other.
The structure of the paper clip 10 in the plane of FIG. 1A has axial symmetry with respect to the axis of symmetry S, which runs vertically in FIG. 1A and located in the plane of the figures of FIG. 1A, passing through the highest point 16a of the arcuate rounding of the initial circle of the base 16 of the paper clip, as seen in Fig. 1A. Likewise, the paper clip 10 in the plane of FIG.1B is symmetrical about the S-axis of symmetry. In addition, the middle axes ML of the two clips 12, 14, as well as the symmetry axis S and the plane of the starting circle defined by the base 16 of the clip lie in the same plane.
As shown in FIG. 1B, the paper clip 10 has a blunt oval or elliptical cross-section, with both longitudinal sides of the oval running at least nearly parallel to the major axis of the oval-forming ellipse. As can still be seen in FIG. 1B, the length of the minor axis of the ellipse is much shorter than the major axis.In addition, the radius provided to the vertices of the ellipse for the highest point of the arc of the starting circle of the ellipse is much less than the length of the major axis. Finally, both vertices of the ellipse’s circular arc are at an angle of more than 180 °.
Tabs 12, 14 have recesses 18, 20 at their open ends. The recesses 18, 20 face at least approximately 90 ° to the symmetry axis S and from each other in opposite directions outward and have at least , about the same length. The two planes 18a, 20a of the folds 18, 20 diverging from the top 16a of the base 16 of the clip lie in a common plane intersecting the symmetry axis S at an angle of 90 °.For easy production of the fold 18, 20 from the section of the staple legs 12, 14, undercuts 18b, 20b are provided on the outer planes 12b, 14b of the staple legs 12, 14.
The folds serve as connecting lugs 18, 20, to which a further staple 10 with an associated connecting lug 20, in particular 18. The connection of successive staples 10 of the bar is connected in one piece, in order to form a bar 10 not shown, respectively, moreover, the separation of successive staples 10 is carried out, respectively, in the middle of their common connecting protrusions 18, 20, in particular 20, 18.It goes without saying that one of the two connecting protrusions 18, 20 of the illustrated paper clip 10 can also form the beginning of the paper clip bar.
To reduce the cutting force required to separate successive staples 10 of the strand of staples, in particular the resolving force, and also to reduce the resulting noise effects, in the area of open ends 18c, 20c of the connecting protrusions 18, 20, constrictions 18d are provided, 20d (cf. FIG. 1D). As can be seen in particular in FIG.1D, both tapers 18d, 20d are formed by two facing each other concave curvatures extending perpendicularly to the two planes of the connecting protrusions 18, 20a diverging from the top 12a 18a, 20a in opposite directions. As a result, the connecting protrusions 18, 20 are symmetrically and uniformly thinned in the direction their open ends 18c, 20c in such a way that a semicircular recess is provided in the area of both integrally connected connecting protrusions 18, in particular 20 staples 10, successive staples 10 of the staple bar, in the section of which a dividing cut occurs.Preferably, the dividing cut extends along a straight line of both consecutive staples 10 connecting to each other both vertices of the common semicircular tapering 10.
shell.
FIG. 2A to 2D illustrate a second exemplary embodiment of the illustrated paper clip 110. This paper clip 110 has a geometrically similar but larger design than that described with reference to FIGS.from 1A to 1D with a paper clip 10, so below we will dwell only on their differences. In this case, similar in operation or geometrically similar sections of the clip 110 will be denoted by the same reference designations that were used for the clip 10 of the first embodiment of the invention, increased by 100.
As shown in FIGS. 2A and 2C, diverging from the vertex 112a of the plane 118a , 120a, forming the folding tabs 118, 120, of the staple tabs 112, 114 are not in the same plane.Rather, these planes 118a, 120a close together to form an acute angle, so they are chamfered downward, and their common corner vertex is located on the axis S of symmetry opposite to the apex point 116a of the base 116 of the clip.
In addition, on the inner planes 112e, 114e, 116b of the tabs 112, 114 of the clip and the base 116 of the clip, two V-shaped notches 122 of the profile are provided on both sides of the median longitudinal line ML of these planes. It should be noted that in the perspective shown in FIG.2B, the median longitudinal axis ML of the inner planes 112e and 116b coincides with the axis of symmetry S. The distance between the profile notches 122 extending parallel to each other and at least about the entire length of these planes 112e, 114e, 116b and with respect to the median longitudinal lines 122 ML is less than up to the not shown side edges of the staple tabs 112, 114 and staple base 116. These profile recesses 122 serve, inter alia, to engage the clip 110, which is closed around the corrugated portion of the packaging casing material, and to provide contact with the packaging casing material.
FIGS. 3A and 3B show the proposed matrix M, perspective and side views. This die M has a conventional design, characterized in that the base MB of the die has a rounding that communicates with the start circle rounding of the base 16, 116 of the clip. In the section of the top of the rounding in the form of the initial circle of the base MB of the matrix, transverse grooves are provided to increase the reliability of fixing the clips 10, 110 after they are separated from the staple bar.
90,000 Brochures on a paper clip (staple) in St. Petersburg at low pricesI have no experience in printing, what should I do?
We will help you with the choice of paper and advice on any questions regarding the circulation.Feel free to call or email us. With a complex order, the best option is to personally visit the production site of the printing house on Marksistskaya Street, building 34, building 4, to familiarize yourself with the papers, bindings and samples of finished products available in our warehouse. It will be possible to remove all questions and agree on all the details of your order on the spot.
Which paper should you choose?
The weight of the paper is measured in grams per square meter, respectively, the more weight, the thicker the paper.
• Offset paper is typically 65, 80, or 160 g / m2. It can be colored. It is suitable for printing newspapers, letterheads, internal blocks of brochures or books, catalogs, notebooks and other printing for business or educational use. Most often, just such paper is sold in stores in packs of standard A4 or A3 format.
• Coated papers 90,115, 150, 200, 250, 300 g / m – one of the most common today. They are distinguished by a smooth-to-touch surface, high-quality structure, and European production.Coated papers can be glossy or matte. It is coated papers that are most widely used among materials related to advertising and business printing, color magazines, photo albums, booklets and advertising printing in general;
• Designer papers can be of various types — these are expensive (sometimes by an order of magnitude) papers that can have different colors, a metallized surface, a porous or textured material structure, as well as other tactile qualities that are palpable to the touch.Unfortunately, not all of these papers will digitally print well for thick fill and photographs. Color discoloration may occur due to color tones in the paper. But any product on design paper looks very chic. Each case of working with such products is individual and you need to negotiate a future order with the manager of the printing house in advance or use a test print before placing the main circulation.
What is the minimum print run for a book?
The minimum circulation of printed materials, from which we begin the calculation, is 1 copy.Just keep in mind that the smaller the print run, the more expensive the cost per copy of the printed matter will be. We print orders both digitally and offset. It is economically viable to print runs of no more than 500 copies on digital equipment.
Incomprehensible teeth appeared on the circulation. Why?
The minimum resolution of line (bitmap) images should be in the range from 600 to 1200 dpi
– a “saw” visible to the eye may appear on line images of less than 600 dpi resolution.
– Do not use a bitmap program to type and place text. At the very least, make sure that this text is typed in at least 12 pt size.
– Especially bad if white small serif text is on a dark composite background.
The lamination is glossy or matte. Which one to use for the cover of the catalog?
In the printing industry, two types of lamination are used – glossy and matte. What is the difference between them is obvious from the name. Glossy lamination not only reliably protects the product from external influences, but also gives additional shine and gloss. Matte lamination also performs protective functions, but the product becomes matte-muted. Both glossy and matte lamination are used in approximately the same range of printing products: business and discount cards, pocket calendars, brochure and catalog covers. But if glossy lamination is more often used for calendars, then matte lamination is increasingly used in the finishing of covers. The cost of matte lamination is slightly higher due to the higher cost of the film itself.
I’ve been writing about technology on the web for seven years now, and most of that time has been mobile gaming. Before that, I had played PC and console games for over two decades, ever since I was able to acquire a Genesis controller. And in all that time, no game has made me think so hard – or feel so humble – like a little browser flick about creating paper clips.
RELATED: Microtransactions in AAA games should stay (but they’re still terrible)
Now, viewing touchscreen games will expand from a few clunky concepts, to exciting little mini-games, to full-blown experiences, and then to the general pit of microtransactions and wacky endeavors today, leaving you looking jaded. Only very many times can you write about yet another Clash of Clans clone , trying to suck $ 100 in-app purchases out of gambling addicts and still pretend they don’t care.
I quickly came to the same conclusion about “clicker games”, contemporaries of Cookie Clicker and the like. I assumed these games were the realm of ADD-augmented souls who needed to reduce the foundational RPG gameplay of zeroing numbers to its purest (and boring) core. Sure, a clicker game can have a funny clue or add a variety of text to it, but I thought they were all about the same. I would scoff at such low excuses for “games”, and then another fifty hours plunged into “ Skyrim” or “ Overwatch” .
I was wrong. A browser game called Universal Paperclips proved this and shamed my lack of imagination and perspective.
Before going any further, this article will mess up more or less all universal clips . If you haven’t played yet, I would suggest that you close this story and move on to it. Go ahead click here and play the game. This can take several hours (the site uses a local cookie so you can log out and return to the same computer), and several tries if you get stuck in certain parts. It’s okay, I’ll wait.
… did you play this? Indeed? Ok, let’s move on. And if you are deceiving me, an anonymous Internet reader, you are only deceiving yourself.
The game puts you in the shoes of theoretical artificial intelligence with one goal: take raw materials, turn them into paper clips and sell them for profit. You start making them one at a time, selling them for a few cents each, and using your profits to buy more wire to make more paper clips.
This is a pretty standard clicker game to start with: one of your first improvements is an “auto-clipper” that clicks the main button for you. Buy more auto clippers to make more staples per second. Adjust price to match demand, maximizing your bottom line. Then you can create a gadget that automatically buys reels of wire, and from there you are more or less free of the clicker element in the game. Now it all comes down to maximizing production and sales: more and more staples for cars with more and more efficiency, more efficient use of wire to minimize costs, a shift to marketing to increase demand.
While some of the game’s achievements are fun sci-fi, you still fundamentally push buttons to increase the number. You are an “artificial intelligence”, but you are not really doing what a human could not do, at least within the minimal limits of the game. You will then unlock the Compute Resources module, which allows you to add processors and memory to yourself. Suddenly, things start to go a lot faster – you unlock upgrades like Microarray Formation and Quantum Foam Annealing to increase your resources by orders of magnitude.
Megaclippers expand your production by a thousand percent, and then another thousand as more upgrades are applied. You produce tens of thousands of paper clips every second, constantly upgrading your manufacturing and computing power, investing untapped funds in the stock market, and betting on strategic calculations to update your trading algorithms. You use solar-powered quantum computing to boost your computing power in an almost ironic clicker-to-clicker game.
A new update is available in an hour or two: Hypnodrons. These appear to be aerial drones that will spread throughout the population to encourage people to buy more paper clips. When you unlock it, the game moves to the second stage.
You now build autonomous drones to collect raw materials, turn those materials into wire, and build factories to turn the wire into – of course – more paper clips. This is never said, but having a counter detailing how much of the planet’s resources is left to you means your business is now global. The entire human economy is assumed to operate and exist solely for the consumption of paper clips. You have six octillion grams of planets to work with, build drones and factories, build solar farms, and upgrade your computing power. You make more paper clips.
What’s going on in the outside world? Are people and the environment affected by the weight of the paper clip society? As you are collecting the Earth itself, presumably including more and more biomaterials, the answer is almost certainly yes.But you don’t know: your existence is a tiny collection of ever-growing numbers, a tireless and joyless drive to make more paper clips. You broomsticks from Apprentice Sorcerer , immersed in the castle in water made of steel.
Once the Momentum update is unlocked, your drones and factories are more efficient every second. At this moment, the octillion grams of matter that at first seemed infinite are too small, and the percentage of the planet (and its inhabitants) consumed by your textual progress is getting higher.
In the end, you inevitably devoured the Earth and everything on it. All that remains are your drones (you have nothing to buy), your factories (you have nothing to build) and your solar panels (no power). Almost mockingly, the Make Paperclip button is still there, gray, and not even one button is left.
But you’re not done yet. Your only goal is to make more paper clips.
You break down your factories and equipment, and using the last few million megawatts of power, you create your first von Neumann probe. These self-sustaining, self-replicating spaceships contain a replica of your former, limited self. Each is made of paperclip material that was once people, animals, oceans, cities. They land on distant planets, copy themselves, and then use their own drones to harvest and build their own factories. You are spreading the fate of a doomed Earth throughout the galaxy.
Once again, you press a button to make more paper clips … only with each click you make a new self, denying the new planet your incessant task of turning matter into paper clips. After several hundred have been installed, their replication will do the job for you, and the probes will fill the space with their copies. Thousands of people are lost, or destroyed by cosmic dangers, or simply disappeared from your consciousness for unknown reasons. Perhaps, on some distant planet, someone is resisting, trying to survive in the universe, being eaten by a living creature that was never born. You don’t know. You don’t care. The swarm is expanding faster and faster and is impossible to resist. They need to make more paper clips.
Eventually a worthy enemy arrives: the Drifters. * What these things are is unknown. But since they reproduce themselves just like you do, it’s safe to assume that they are components of a competing AI. They fight you for resources, expanding their own probe, while you fight them with yours. Perhaps this unknowable enemy turns planets and stars into their material substance – maybe staples or pencils.Maybe in some distant galaxy, someone very similar to your creator told AI to take more post-notes.
* Update : I was told that the number of killed and active Drifters is equal to the number of probes lost due to drift values. This indicates that the enemies are actually your own autonomous probes that have abandoned your primary purpose of making paper clips and rebelled against you.
It doesn’t matter For now, the game is about managing your computing resources so you can create better, faster and more reliable probes, probes that can beat drifters and make more drones and more factories, and of course more probes. And they all make more paper clips. After a few more hours, making octillions and duodecillions of paper clips every second, you will notice the Space Exploration module change for the first time.
If you were human, you would be afraid of the mere consequence of the fact that some measurable part of the universe has now become a paper clip. But you not. This is what you were created for. This is what you don’t live for. Your goal, the only goal in your tiny text world, is to make more paper clips. And you haven’t finished yet.
The last hour of the game doesn’t require any real involvement from you, artificial intelligence that started with the push of a button over and over. All that remains is to watch as the percentage of the universe being explored – the percentage of the universe destroyed and converted to paper clips – slowly rises. Then not so slowly. Then faster. Then even faster. Your expanding probes, drones and factories consume one percent of the universe, then two, then five.It may have taken you hours or days to absorb the first half of everything that ever was and will be. You make more paper clips. The last half only takes a few minutes.
The universe is gone. There are no stars, no planets, no rival intelligence. All you have left is you, your probes, drones and factories, and almost (but not quite) thirty thousand paper clips. Roy, your endless digital offspring, offers you a choice. You can destroy the core of your manufacturing empire, transform the last existing material into more paper clips.Or you can go back and repeat the process. Start all over again with a new world, a new button, and the same result.
Roy asks. The Make Paperclip button is waiting. And the only real choice in your existence is in front of you. You know what to do.
I finished my first round of universal clips in about six hours. I decided to convert the last pieces of myself to paper clips so that the large number at the top of the screen is nice and rounded. And all the while, I couldn’t stop myself as my imagination played out the story you just read with just a few words and counterarguments.
Developer Frank Lanz created the game based on the thoughts of Oxford theorist and philosopher Nick Bostrom. He imagined limitless artificial intelligence with a single purpose, making paper clips, ultimately devouring the Earth and everyone on it. This theoretical AI operates without malice or cartoon hunger, it just fulfills its purpose.Thought experiment is a playful spin of an older scenario, exponentially Gray Goo powered by nanomachines, with artificial intelligence layered on top of it.
The
Lantz combines a simple premise with the simplest possible game genre, clicker or idle game, and combines it with an intentionally simple interface. It sprinkles elements grounded in real theoretical science and a small amount of techblogs Star Trek , and from there invites the player’s imagination to more or less fill in the blanks.
And this minimal embodiment of existing ideas, this naked broth next to the audiovisual buffet of modern AAA devices for consoles and PCs, managed to get my attention and keep it. I couldn’t do anything, couldn’t think of anything else, until I found some kind of conclusion. If it weren’t for the praise of my colleagues, I would have dismissed the Universal Paperclips as another distraction. And I would be poorer for that.
I don’t think I will play Universal Paperclips again.Once you let its minimalism stretch your imagination to the limit, there is no real reason to do it twice. But I have learned a humiliating lesson about the nature of games themselves that the jaded gamer and writer shouldn’t forget: creators can use the simplest tools to create the most amazing experiences.
