Are these stamps legal to use on documents in the UK

In response to a comment from Robin who blogs at http://www.mobilityshopper.co.uk/ we made some enquiries to check that the stamps can be legally used as a signature.

We found a very useful PDF leaflet from Ataxia UK that was written by Stephen Mason, author of Electronic Signatures in Law and editor of the e-Signature Law Journal.

English judges have taken a pragmatic approach to the manuscript signature.
In essence, a signature can take any form, providing it acts to prove the person intended
to sign the document.

The PDF describes several instances of people using stamps when they have had degenerative conditions, and the first recorded use of a ‘seal’ in 1681!

Guidance from the British Bankers’ Association (BBA) states that English law recognises
as a valid signature not only one written manually by the signatory but also one appropriately
embossed using a facsimile signature stamp.

If you find that your bank or shop refuses to accept a signature name stamp you can also rely on the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 as service providers must ensure they provide an equal service to disabled people. How to Refill a Self Ink Stamp: Re-Inking Custom Rubber Stamps

If your self-inking stamp impressions are getting light, you can re-ink your stamps using our step-by-step pictures with instructions below. Often, just re-inking your custom stamp can prolong the life of the stamp, and allow it to make a great impression!

Re-Inking Trodat Stamps


Push the stamp down slightly and pull out ink pad. Add 10-20 drops of Trodat / Ideal Ink on the inked side of the pad, just enough to saturate the pad. Once the ink has absorbed into the pad, push the pad back in.


Re-Inking Trodat Date Stamps


  • Push stamp down slightly and push buttons on side to lock into position.
  • Pull out ink pad.
  • Put 10 – 20 drops of Trodat / Ideal Ink on the inked side of the pad.
  • Once the ink has absorbed into the pad, push the pad back in.

Re-Inking 2000 Plus Stamps – NEW STYLE!

  • Push down slightly on the stamp – about 1/8” (Image 1).
  • Lock the stamp in position using the locks on both sides of the stamp (Image 2).
  • Remove the ink pad by pushing on the pad (Image 3).
  • Re-ink the pad, applying 10 – 20 drops of 2000+ Stamp Ink.
  • Allow the ink to absorb into the stamp pad.

  • Re-ink the pad by applying 10 – 20 drops of 2000+ Stamp Ink (Image 2).
  • Allow the ink to absorb into the stamp pad.
  • Replace the stamp pad in the stamp.

Re-Inking MaxLight Stamps

  • You must use MaxLight Ink, since another brand’s formula will not mix with MaxLight and may damage your stamp.
  • Remove the handle and add the ink as follows. If there are 2 ports, divide the ink evenly between the 2 ports.

    • Sizes 305, 325, PCM, PCL = 3-4 Drops
    • Sizes 115, 125, 145 = 4-6 Drops
    • Sizes 185, 265 = 6-8 Drops
    • Size 165 = 8-10 Drops
    • Size 245, 720 = 10-12 Drops
    • Size 225 = 12-14 Drops
    • Size 275 = 15-20 Drops
    • Size 700, 750, 800 = 20-24 Drops

  • Replace the handle and allow to sit for 5 minutes.
  • Occasionally, you may see lint or paper dust on your MaxLight surface. Simply place a piece of cellophane tape across the die of the stamp, rub your finger over the tape, then remove the tape. The tape will lift off the residue.

Re-Inking MaxLight Slim Stamp 1854

  • Remove the clear plastic cover and the stamp index with your text on it (Image 1).
  • You will see two oblong holes and be able to see through all the way to the ink pad. Add 3 to 4 drops of MaxLight ink to each of the oblong ports (Image 2). You must use MaxLight Ink, since another brand’s formula will not mix with MaxLight and may damage your stamp.
  • Replace the index and clear plastic cover.

Re-Inking MaxLight Slim Stamp 2773

  • Remove the dust cover on the bottom of the stamp (Image 1).
  • Slid the stamp body sideways out of the handle of the stamp (Image 2).
  • Put the stamp body on some scrap paper as there may be some ink bleed. You will see three oblong holes and you will be able to see through all the way to the ink pad. Add 3 to 4 drops of ink to each of the oblong ports (Image 3).You must use MaxLight Ink, since another brand’s formula will not mix with MaxLight and may damage your stamp.
  • Slide the stamp body sideways back into the stamp handle (Image 2).
  • Occasionally, you may see lint or paper dust on your MaxLight surface. Simply place a piece of cellophane tape across the die of the stamp, rub your finger over the tape, then remove the tape. The tape will lift off the residue.

Re-Inking XStampers

  • Most XStampers only require between 2 to 6 drops of ink.
  • You must use XStamper Ink, since another brand’s formula may not mix with XStamper and may damage your XStamper.

Energy, consumer staples stocks boost FTSE 100; Bloomsbury jumps

London’s FTSE 100 index climbed on Wednesday, helped by gains in heavyweight energy and consumer staples stocks, while Bloomsbury Publishing jumped following a strong earnings update.

The blue-chip index (.FTSE) rose 0.4%, with oil majors BP (BP.L) and Royal Dutch Shell climbing 1.8% and 1.9% respectively, as crude prices extended gains.

Large dollar-earning consumer staples companies including Reckitt Benckiser Group (RKT.L), Diageo (DGE.L) and Unilever (ULVR.L) provided the biggest boost to the index.

The domestically focused mid-cap FTSE 250 index (.FTMC) advanced 0.2%, touching a record high.

Bloomsbury Publishing (BLPU.L) advanced 5.8% as the Harry Potter publisher declared a special dividend and lifted its targets for the current year, after strong book sales during lockdowns drove a 22% surge in its annual earnings. read more

“What you have is a sense of confidence in the longer run, there’s a divergence between an equity market which believes long-term growth expectations have shifted upwards, and the fixed income market which doesn’t expect the Fed or the ECB to do very much in the short term at least,” said Sebastien Galy, a senior macro strategist at Nordea Asset Management.

“It’s quite important to focus on the Beige Book, which is very unusual because it’s a lot of information that we need is anecdotal.”

Asian stocks chopped around record peaks as markets awaited U.S. jobs data due on Friday and the Federal Reserve’s “beige book” economic snapshot.

The FTSE 100 index has traded in a tight range since April as concerns grew that central banks might pare support early as economies reopen and inflation climbs.

Among other stocks, Tate & Lyle (TATE.L) rose 2.4%, after Berenberg upgraded the food ingredients maker’s stock to “buy” on prospects of business split.

Burberry Group (BRBY.L) jumped 2.6% to the top of the FTSE 100 index after Exane BNP Paribas upgraded the stock to “outperform” from “neutral”.

How to cut a stamp

If you’ve ever tried block or linoleum printing before, you already have the appropriate tools.I use a piece of rubber specifically for printing and a hand-held cutting tool that has different screw tips. Also, I have ink ink and water based ink for printing later.

Step 1: Create stamp

To make a seal, you first need to design it. Everything goes! Perhaps you have a doodle “signature”, or you are running a business and want to recreate your logo for printing on bags. Maybe, like me, you just like birds and flowers.Take some time to improve your image. Keep in mind the size of the envelope you want to print. You will want to make sure there is enough room for your design package. Once you have a version that you are happy with, sketch it out on calking paper using graphite (the softer / darker the pencil, the better).

Step 2: Transfer the image to the rubber block

The great thing about this paper tracing is that it acts like carbon paper.Flip the image over and place it over the rubber. Make sure your piece does not go over the edge of the rubber. Now rub the image onto the surface while pressing gently. He must convey this path. If not, take your pencil and trace the lines to make sure they’re on the rubber. They may look weak, but that’s okay. You want them to be dark enough to cut.

Important: when you print a stamp, it will be printed opposite how you cut it.By flipping the paper over and handing it over, we will get out in the right direction.

Step 3: Cut out the outline of the stamp

Before starting the small details, cut out the entire shape of your design. I did this using a combination of thread and an X-ACTO knife. First, I used broad advice to keep track of the image carefully. I then used my knife to cut out the excess mark.

Step 4: Remove small parts

Here’s the fun (and most tedious) part of the whole process.With your tools, start carving out your design. I have three types of prompts for this purpose, and they are mostly small, medium and large. The smallest tip will contain the finest details. Since I had a ton of small lines, this is what I used.

Remember: if you cut a line, no ink will print – it will be the color of the paper. If you don’t die-cut it, the ink will print on paper. Here’s an example:

Step 5: Draw Your Brand and Practice

Once you’re done carving, it’s time to lure the seal and try it out.However, don’t snatch your envelopes. We want to test what the print looks like before we decorate any post. Using your breaker and ink, apply the pigment to the print. Flip it over and press down on the paper. Be firm but gentle – if you press too hard, some ink may smear into the cracks.

Now remove the seal and evaluate the seal. Does this mean how you want it? Are there any areas where ink is mistakenly printed? You may need to repeat some lines or use less ink.Practice typing until you are confident with your typing.

Step 6: It’s a show!

When you are happy with how your seal is printed, it is time to decorate your envelope. Ink as usual and apply. Delete it, refer to it and send it to the lucky recipient!
