Staples mobile: Staples overhauls mobile to simplify cross-channel shopping

Staples overhauls mobile to simplify cross-channel shopping

Staples is overhauling its digital touch points, including a new mobile site and application, to provide a more fluid and simple cross-channel shopping experience that will enable shoppers to start an order in one channel and finish it in another.

More than a quarter of Staples’ site traffic comes from mobile, and the company expects that number to pass 50 percent in the near future. The company is therefore leveraging the channel to reach consumers where they are and aiming to stand out in the competitive office supplies category.

“With the new Staples online storefront we wanted to make it easier for customers to find the products that are right for their business, by serving up relevant, personalized content and pricing,” said Faisal Masud, executive vice president of global ecommerce at Staples, Framingham, MA. “By making the site less busy, improving the speed and performance and adding thousands of new products to the site, we’ve simplified the overall shopping experience.

“Mobile is central to our strategy as we see it as a core part of our omnichannel offering, along with our stores and desktop site,” he said. “As the second largest Internet retailer in the world, we know that every channel is important, but mobile will be a key component of our plans going forward, as we know it’s the most rapidly growing channel.”

Cross-screen shopping
The desktop site has already been revamped, and the mobile site and app will be updated in the coming months.

Staples plans to create a seamless experience that allows consumers to start and finish shopping wherever and whenever they want.

When the mobile redesign is in place, consumers will be able start shopping on one channel and finish on another. For example, a consumer can order a product online and pick it up in-store.

Additionally, the mobile site will take advantage of GPS to let consumers connect with the closest store.

The new mobile site will also feature easy checkout, letting consumers transact in two clicks.

Online Staples
When consumers first visit the new Staples site, they will see a tutorial explaining the new features of the site, including faster search, more products and easier rewards.

The new online site offers a simplified, image-heavy look. It also better integrates with Staples Rewards.

Additionally, the site moves more quickly and has an enhanced overall performance.

Staples recently acquired the software company Runa, which is helping to create a more personalized experience for customers. For example, it will offer more dynamic pricing and offer a price match guarantee starting Nov. 3.

“Staples’ vision is to provide every product businesses need to succeed beyond traditional office products,” Mr. Masud said.

“We want the shopping experience to be consistent across all platforms, because we know that today’s customers are increasingly interacting with our brand through multiple channels, allowing us to leverage the power of our supply chain and our stores,” he said.

The Library of Congress believes that many of the papers in the Detroit Publishing Company collection are in the public domain or have no known copyright restrictions and are free to use and reuse. For example, all photos published in the U.S. more than 95 years ago are in the public domain. The Library has also obtained permission for the use of many other materials, and presents additional materials pursuant to fair use under United States copyright law. Researchers should watch for documents that may be copyrighted (for example, published in the United States less than 95 years ago, or unpublished and the author died less than 70 years ago).

You are responsible for deciding whether your use of the items in this collection is legal. You will need written permission from the rightsholders to copy, distribute, or otherwise use copyrighted materials except as allowed by fair use or other statutory exemptions. Some materials may be protected under international law. You may also need permission from holders of other rights, such as publicity and/or privacy rights.

More about Copyright and other Restrictions

For guidance about compiling full citations consult Citing Primary Sources.

  • Rights Advisory:
    No known restrictions on publication.
  • Reproduction Number:

    LC-DIG-det-4a19822 (digital file from original)

  • Call Number:

    LC-D4-39543 [P&P]

  • Access Advisory:

Obtaining Copies

If an image is displaying, you can download it yourself. (Some images display only as thumbnails outside
the Library of Congress because of rights considerations, but you have access to larger size images on
site.)

Alternatively, you can purchase copies of various types through
Library of Congress Duplication Services.

  1. If a digital image is displaying: The qualities of the digital image partially
depend on whether it was made from the original or an intermediate such as a copy negative or
transparency. If the Reproduction Number field above includes a reproduction number that starts
with LC-DIG…, then there is a digital image that was made directly from the original
and is of sufficient resolution for most publication purposes.

  2. If there is information listed in the Reproduction Number field above:
You can use the reproduction number to purchase a copy from Duplication Services. It will be
made from the source listed in the parentheses after the number.

If only black-and-white (“b&w”) sources are listed and you desire a copy showing
color or tint (assuming the original has any), you can generally purchase a quality copy of
the original in color by citing the Call Number listed above and including the catalog
record (“About This Item”) with your request.

  3. If there is no information listed in the Reproduction Number field above:
You can generally purchase a quality copy through Duplication Services. Cite the Call Number
listed above and include the catalog record (“About This Item”) with your request.

Price lists, contact information, and order forms are available on the
Duplication Services Web site.

Access to Originals

Please use the following steps to determine whether you need to fill out a call slip in the Prints
and Photographs Reading Room to view the original item(s). In some cases, a surrogate (substitute image) is
available, often in the form of a digital image, a copy print, or microfilm.

  1. Is the item digitized? (A thumbnail (small) image will be visible on the left.)

    • Yes, the item is digitized.
Please use the digital image in preference to requesting the original. All images can be
viewed at a large size when you are in any reading room at the Library of Congress. In some
cases, only thumbnail (small) images are available when you are outside the Library of
Congress because the item is rights restricted or has not been evaluated for rights
      restrictions.

As a preservation measure, we generally do not serve an original item when a digital image
is available. If you have a compelling reason to see the original, consult with a reference
librarian. (Sometimes, the original is simply too fragile to serve. For example, glass and
film photographic negatives are particularly subject to damage. They are also easier to see
online where they are presented as positive images. )
    • No, the item is not digitized. Please go to #2.
  2. Do the Access Advisory or Call Number fields above indicate that a non-digital surrogate exists,
such as microfilm or copy prints?

    • Yes, another surrogate exists. Reference staff can direct you to this
      surrogate.
    • No, another surrogate does not exist. Please go to #3.
  3. If you do not see a thumbnail image or a reference to another surrogate, please fill out a call slip in
the Prints and Photographs Reading Room. In many cases, the originals can be served in a few minutes.
Other materials require appointments for later the same day or in the future. Reference staff can
advise you in both how to fill out a call slip and when the item can be served.

To contact Reference staff in the Prints and Photographs Reading Room, please use our
Ask A Librarian service or call the reading room between 8:30 and
5:00 at 202-707-6394, and Press 3.

Former Staples Brand Leader Joins Microsoft, Windows Mobile Marketing

REDMOND, Wash. — Jan. 22, 2008 — Microsoft Corp. today announced the appointment of Todd Peters as corporate vice president of marketing for its Mobile Communications Business. In his new post, Peters will be responsible for driving marketing efforts for Windows Mobile, one of the fastest-growing businesses at Microsoft; Windows Live for mobile; and other mobility brand offerings related to product planning, product management and campaigns, and marketing communications.

Peters most recently was vice president responsible for brand management and all U. S. retail technology marketing for the office supply company Staples Inc. He was behind the development of the Staples “easy” brand concept that was instrumental in driving sales. It was also Peters’ idea to create the Easy Button, which was sold through retail outlets to raise money for charities such as Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Before joining Staples, Peters spent six years at Intel Corporation, where he was responsible for setting global brand strategy. He developed the brand architecture for the Intel family of processors that helped upgrade the chip manufacturing company’s market image. Before coming to Intel, Peters spent 11 years in advertising agencies, including Hal Riney & Partners advertising in San Francisco, where he led the launch of the nation’s first true PCS offering for Sprint.

“This is an exciting journey for Microsoft’s mobile business; with Todd’s winning combination of technology and consumer experience, he’s absolutely the right person at the right time as we expand in appeal to a broader audience,” said Pieter Knook, senior vice president of the Mobile Communications Business at Microsoft.

Peters will report to Knook, leading marketing efforts to define and deliver the future of mobility for Microsoft customers and partners. His official start date was Jan 21.

“Microsoft is gaining a real foothold with its mobile products and services in the consumer world,” said Peters. “I am looking forward to helping make Windows Mobile a brand not only that people recognize, but that they seek out when choosing the phone that’s right for them.”

Founded in 1975, Microsoft (Nasdaq “MSFT”) is the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential.

Staples, a tablet site pioneer, launches its first iPad app

Staples Inc. is one of only 24 retailers in the 2015 Internet Retailer Mobile 500 to have a separate commerce site specifically optimized for tablets. Even still, last week the company unveiled an iPad app—the first of its kind for the office supplies retailer—among a laundry list of new initiatives.

Staples joins 107 other retailers in the 2015 Mobile 500 that have dedicated iPad apps. Another 12 have universal iOS apps that serve both iPhones and iPads.

The company decided to create a separate iPad app because the products consumers most commonly buy when shopping on tablets and the types of Staples shoppers that use tablets are not the same as the typical Staples desktop web site shopper, Faisal Masud, executive vice president of global e-commerce at Staples, says. He would not elaborate.

It’s widely known in retail that users of Apple devices spend more, and more frequently, than user of Android devices. Further, tablet conversion rates can exceed desktop conversion rates. For example, Apple iPad users convert at a rate three percentage points greater than Android tablet users and spend significantly more money, according to data on August 2014 activity on the affiliate networks of Affiliate Window.

Tablets have been big for Staples’ web sales: Nearly one-third of traffic to Staples.com comes from tablets devices, and an estimated 70% of mobile commerce sales come from tablets, according to the Internet Retailer 2015 Mobile 500.

“All of mobile is playing a central role in our omnichannel push,” Masud says. “From the ability to buy online and pick up in-store through m. staples.com, to adding an iPad app that lets customers check in-store availability, mobile offers new ways for our customers to shop Staples. We are seeing encouraging growth from our mobile channels, and will continue to incorporate the features and functionalities mobile brings to the table into our omnichannel offerings.”

Staples is No. 12 in the 2015 Mobile 500 and Internet Retailer projects it will generate $800 million in mobile sales in 2014, growth of 88.24% over 2013.

The iPad app lets shoppers check and cash their Staples Rewards balance, reorder past purchases, access deals, check product availability in stores, and filter search results by price, category and relevance. “The ease of use of the new Staples iPad app has us really excited as it provides direct access to Staples’ biggest and best deals, helping businesses make more happen,” Masud says.

Staples developed the app in-house, though it declined to reveal the cost.

Staples also announced last week that it would be one of the first retailers to accept Apple Pay in its retail stores, though it did not offer more details on the program.

Mobile simple option.Ideally, if you choose the chain, so that it has a waterproof cover on it. You don’t want a rusty-looking chain at the end of the season, do you?

The advantages to their use include simplicity of design and operation. The only thing is, try to chain the motorcycle to more weighty parts, such as a fork, swingarm, maybe even a frame. Fastening a motorcycle to a wheel is equivalent to finding only a chain with a wheel in place. Usually, the chain scares away only ordinary laymen who do not have the equipment to bite through the link.

Ropes with lock

A cable with a lock is considered a little more reliable than a chain. Although some might argue. On my own I will add that the question is in the diameter of both the chain and the cable. It has no links, and the twisted structure is one-piece, sometimes too tough for cunning wire cutters, although you cannot argue with the same hydraulics, for example. But still there is a difference, bite one link or suffer with a twisted cord? Otherwise, the pros and cons are the same as the tips for use.

Such mobile structures are good when you have something to fasten the motorcycle to, but it does not completely lose its mobility, it is enough to bite off the chain / cable or unscrew the part to which it is attached and the motorcycle can be taken away on its own.

Shoe or bracket

The design, which tightly fixes the wheel, is most often attached to the brake disc and limits all kinds of wheel movements. Differs in sufficient reliability and protection from external damage. It is better to fix it in the lower part, where the suspension mount does not interfere with the girth. In this case, even if the thief was able to start the motorcycle, then he will hardly be able to drive it on his own.

An obvious disadvantage is that with a shoe / bracket, a motorcycle can simply be thrown into the back of any van and taken away just like that, if you haven’t fastened it to something.

U bracket or snap hook

The design is arranged in such a way that the mount could embrace a motorcycle part like the edge of a fork or swingarm and fix it with a part of a wheel, spokes or a brake disc. A good and interesting tool.

Of course, you can have a bite to eat too, and nothing will prevent you from throwing a motorcycle into the van except for a great miracle. But it will still protect you from simple and inexperienced thieves.

So which one to choose?

In my opinion, the most successful way to be able to chain the motorcycle to something and additionally fix the wheel. For example, a block on the front wheel, and a chain or cable through the entire swingarm to the post. While the thieves will tinker with one, then torment with another, the clock is ticking. Maybe someone will scare off the criminal. Although, professionals have long been ready for all the ways to pick up a motorcycle they like. In any case, mechanical means of protection, that chains and cables, that clips, pads and carabiners, all this is the primary protection that will save the motorcycle from the encroachments of simple thieves or pranksters and hooligans.
