My husband and I have been Staples customers through our businesses since 1999.

Why have we stuck with Staples for over 15 years? It’s a convenient and cost-effective place to shop for office supplies, printers, office furniture and more.

Despite being regular Staples shoppers, we hadn’t done much with the Staples Print & Marketing Services — that is, until recently.

Staples challenged us to test out its Print & Marketing Services. They gave us a gift card. They put no restrictions on using the gift card other than asking us to do at least two projects — one involving a straight-forward quick print project and one more advanced project using in-store assistance.

Here’s the report of our test.

What is Staples Print & Marketing Services?

Think of Staples Print & Marketing Services as a print shop dropped inside your local Staples store.

You can walk up to the counter with your marketing collateral on a USB thumb drive. Let’s say you bring in a brochure on your thumb drive that you’ve already had designed. Then you pick your paper, quantity and other options, and have your marketing materials printed professionally. The in-store option is especially helpful when you want a human being to explain choices or assist with anything unique about your project.

But Staples offers more than what you see in the store. There’s an online component, too — and that’s also attractive for small businesses. Let’s say you have an important meeting coming up with a new prospect. You realize you are out of business cards or need a special marketing piece fast. It could be midnight, yet you can go online and create those materials using any of the many Staples marketing templates. Or you can upload designs that your designer has already created for you. Then you electronically submit them to be printed at your local Staples.

If you’re in a hurry, Staples advertises same day printing for many projects, provided you place your order before 2:00 pm. Or if you have a little more time, you can have printed items shipped to your office.

In addition to the quick print options in the store, Staples can also send your project out to a production facility for printing. This is a great option if you require advanced binding, special paper or special finishes.

So depending on your needs, your timing, your design choices and your budget, you have multiple options with Staples Print & Marketing Services.

Our Projects

We tried out three projects.

  1. We created two sets of business cards using an online business card template. We had them printed on glossy premium paper at the store.
  2. We printed some copies of our digital magazine. Normally the magazine is read online, but we’ve been asked for print samples occasionally. We took the opportunity to print some copies to better explain what we do as a business. (Yes, even as a digital publication it helps to have something tangible to show.) This project turned out to involve more than printing because of some font problems in our PDF file — I’ll explain later how Staples fixed the file.
  3. We set up and printed a postcard to use as marketing collateral at events using our own professional design.

Our Results of Using Staples Print & Marketing Services

How were our results? Overall, Staples Print & Marketing Services exceeded our expectations. We tried the online services and also visited our local Staples in Naples, Florida twice during the project. Here are seven takeaways from our challenge:

1. Multiple options

One of the best things about Staples Print & Marketing Services is that you have multiple options.

  • If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, you can design your own marketing materials online and even get same day printing. For simple items like business cards or a marketing postcard, entrepreneurs will appreciate this.
  • If you prefer to have your marketing items professionally designed, you can get them printed at Staples and it will do them justice.
  • And if you want hands-on help from a human being to explain options and make sure your materials come out great, you can go to your local Staples store and get personalized help, too.

2. Speedy Quick Print and Same Day Printing

Need quick print items? Staples is very fast.

We essentially got 24-hour turnaround for our complex project. We received our order a day faster than had been quoted to us.

For the business cards, we submitted the order online at 2:30 pm and got a call that the order was complete at 6:30 pm the same day!

3. Printing Professionals Who Actually Help You

Are you ever frustrated thinking you can’t get personalized help at a chain store? Well this is not the case at Staples. The Staples Print & Marketing Services in our local store was staffed with people who are knowledgeable about printing.

We dealt with two different Staples personnel in the Print & Marketing Services area. Here’s where they beat my expectations: they caught and fixed a problem with some fonts — at no extra charge. The PDF of our magazine is a very large file and some of the letters in the header fonts showed up as error marks due to a problem in the PDF file itself (the large file might have been corrupted when I downloaded it). The Staples Print supervisor caught the issue through printing a sample and called us.

When we first got the call, my heart sank. I feared we’d have to delay a few days while we requested a different file from the designer. But I needn’t have worried. The Staples supervisor requested a Word document showing the underlying content. After we emailed the Word doc, she fixed the messed-up header fonts on multiple pages of the PDF. A few hours later we got another call that our print job was complete. How’s that for service?

4. Marketing Templates That Prevent You From Making Mistakes

For two of our projects, we used the Staples online marketing templates system. Here’s why I was impressed: the output looked professional, the system was very easy to use, AND it kept me from making mistakes.

First, we used the business card templates that qualified for same day printing. We chose a two-sided business card template, uploaded our logo and voila. In 15 minutes we had created and proofread our business cards. Everything was properly lined up. Even better, the template software prevented me from distorting the logo (i.e., stretching one side out of “aspect ratio” alignment), something I inadvertently seem to do without realizing it until I see the printed item.

Second, we used the “Upload your Own Design” option for an 8.5 x 5.5 inch postcard that we’d had professionally designed. When I tried to upload the design file initially, again the Staples online system saved us. It pointed out that our image size was too small and therefore would not look good when printed. It also alerted us that our words and logo were too close to the edges of the postcard, and that if we wanted the postcard trimmed around the edges, a corner of our logo might be cut off. I was able to send a screenshot showing the problems (below) to our designer and he turned around a revised image file.Screenshot showing how the Staples marketing template software prevented a subpar printing project.

5. Rewards and Discounts

We’ve been members of the Staples Rewards program for years – the more you purchase the more savings you get. Staples Rewards pays members 2 percent back and gives other discounts. We got a nice rewards discount of 20 percent on our print order.

6. Business Advantage

By talking in person with the Print & Marketing Services supervisor, we learned about another Staples program called “Business Advantage.” The Print supervisor signed us up on the spot for a Business Advantage membership. As I understand the program, it offers customized solutions for businesses with 10+ people working in them. Under the program, more than one person in your organization can place orders under your business account. You are also assigned a representative as a single point of contact.

7. Cost Effective

Last but not least, prices are cost effective. Here’s one comparison:

Our last order of 500 business cards at a competing online provider cost over $50.00 (after discounts, but adding back in $14 for shipping), pre-tax.

The same type of cards (double sided and glossy fronts) cost $39. 99 for 500 cards at Staples, pre-tax. There was no shipping charge as I picked them up at the store which is five minutes away.

What We Didn’t Put to the Test

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention one thing that we did not put to the test. And that is: printing a large magazine on a regular production basis (i.e., monthly).

Don’t mistake me — I was happy with the limited copies of our magazine printed at Staples. But keep in mind, I opted for a small number of copies to use as samples. I really didn’t test Staples on producing thousands of copies of a printed magazine of 48 or 52 pages, month in and month out.

Staples does offer saddle stitching and glossy heavyweight paper– the kind of treatment a magazine in production deserves. But I’d want to delve deeper into such advanced options and that was beyond the scope of this test which focused on quick print items and trying out Staples’ marketing templates.

Were We Happy?

So, were we happy? Definitely. For small businesses, Staples Print & Marketing Services is a fast, reasonably priced and professional option for getting quality marketing materials and business cards created and printed. If that’s your goal, you can’t go wrong.

Service Details Cost
Setup and Proofing This includes print and cutting setup as well as proofing of postcard file. A small order of approximately 100 cards can be setup and cut in about 1/2 Hr. Please send a single card file with proper bleed, if needed. This is calculated on an hourly, or quarterly portion, basis; $45/hr.
Cutting Cutting is required for postcard orders. For example, a small batch of cards, approximately 25, can be cut in about 1/4 Hr. This is calculated on an hourly, or quarterly portion, basis; $45/hr.
Mail Merge Sort and merge your address list onto the postcards. Address list processing/correction is not yet available. This is calculated on an hourly, or quarterly portion, basis; $45/hr.
Design Services (limited) We do not generally offer design services but can do some design and layout work. This is calculated on an hourly, or quarterly portion, basis; $75/hr.

In Word 2013, you can create and print mailing address labels. Actually, you can create labels for any purpose! When you find the label you want, check to see if there’s a template for it in Word. Templates can save a lot of time because all the setup is done for you.


Make it easy: Use a template

    Start Word, or click FILE > New.

  1. Type Return address label in the Search for online templates box and press Enter.

  2. Click the picture of the template you want and click Create.

  3. In the first label, click each line of the address and type the information for your return address. Word updates all the labels as soon as you click a new line, or click in a margin.

  4. Print a test sheet on plain paper by clicking FILE > Print > Print button.

  5. If the test sheet looks good, load your return address label sheets into your printer and click FILE > Print > Print button.

Word 2013 makes it easy for you to create many different kinds of labels.

Typically, labels come in sheets that you place in the tray of your printer, just like a stack of paper.

After they are printed, you peel them off.

You can find labels that work with almost any type of printer, whether it is an inkjet or laser.

You can even get continuous feed labels. When you find the label you want – let’s say we are looking for simple address labels – check to see if there’s a template for it in Word.

Why? Because templates can save you a lot of time.

I’ll show you what I mean.

Let’s create some return address labels.

Open a blank document in Word.

Click the MAILINGS tab and click Labels. Then, click Options.

Under Printer information, choose the type of printer you have.

The printer we’re going to use is a basic page printer.

Next, choose a label vendor.

As you can see, there are a lot to choose from.

We’ll go with Avery US Letter.

That gives us the standard US letter size of eight-and-a-half by eleven inches.

Then, choose the product template you want from that vendor.

Having a label template saves you time because all the setup is done for you.

Click Details and you can see all the measurements that we won’t have to enter now because we have a template.

If you need to use a label that doesn’t have a template, see movie 4 to find out how to create a custom template.

So once you have your labels and you’ve selected the appropriate template, you can add your content.

Click OK.

In the box labeled Address, type your address or other content.

Next, decide whether to print a Full page of the same label, or just print a Single label.

Let’s stick with Full page.

We’ll do a single label in a moment.

Finally, we can move right ahead and print the labels, or click New Document.

When we do that, Word places the labels in a new document that’s ready to print.

The advantage of doing it this way is that we can add formatting.

We’ll look into that in movie 3.

When you are ready to print, click FILE and Print.

Check the print preview, make sure the right printer is selected and the label sheets are in the printer tray, and then click Print.

Before we move on, click MAILINGS and Labels, and I’ll show you how to print one label at a time, instead of a whole page.

For example, you might want to do this if you only have one label left on a sheet.

Let’s say we want to print the label on Row 3, Column 2. Click Print. And the full sheet of labels goes through the printer, but only that one label is printed on.

So now you know how to create multiple labels with the same text.

Up next, we’ll create multiple labels with different text that we can use for mass mailing.

1.
The applicant has the right to file a pre-trial (out-of-court) complaint against the decision
and (or) action (inaction) of the Department and its officials when
provision of public services.

2.
The submission and consideration of complaints is carried out in the manner prescribed by Chapter 2.1.
Federal Law of July 27, 2010 No. 210-FZ “On the organization of the provision of
state and municipal services “, Regulations on the specifics of filing and
consideration of complaints about violation of the procedure for the provision of public services
of the city of Moscow, approved by the decree of the Moscow Government dated November 15
2011 r.No. 546-PP “On the provision of state and municipal services in the city
Moscow “, these Regulations.

3.
Applicants can file complaints in the following cases:

3.1.
Violations of the deadline for registering a request (statement) and other documents required
for the provision of public services.

Payment for the provision of public services not provided for
regulatory legal acts of the Russian Federation and the city of Moscow.

Documents or information, the absence and (or) unreliability of which is not
were indicated at the initial refusal to accept the documents required for
the provision of public services, or in the provision of public
services, except for the cases provided for in paragraph 4 of part 1 of Article 7

3.3.
Violations of the term for the provision of public services.

Refusal to the applicant:

Complaints can be submitted to the bodies authorized to consider them, in
in writing on paper, in electronic form by one of the following
ways:

With a personal appeal of the applicant (representative of the applicant).

5.2.
By post.

5.3.
Using the Portal if technically feasible.

5.4.
Using the official website of the Department in information and telecommunication
the Internet.

6.
The complaint must contain:

6.1.
The name of the body authorized to consider the complaint or the position and
(or) last name, first name and patronymic (if any) of the relevant official,
to whom the complaint is sent.

6.2.
The name of the executive authority of the city of Moscow or the position and (or)

an individual, including those registered as an individual
entrepreneur, or the name, information about the location of the applicant –
legal entity, as well as contact telephone number (s), address (addresses)
e-mail (if any) and postal address, which should be
a response was sent to the applicant.

6.4.
Submission date and registration number of the request (application) for provision
public service (with the exception of cases of appeal against the refusal to accept
request and its registration).

6.5.
Information about decisions and actions (inaction) that are the subject
appeal.

The arguments on the basis of which the applicant disagrees with the contested decisions and
actions (inaction). The applicant may submit documents (if
availability), confirming the arguments of the applicant, or their copies.

The complaint must be signed by the applicant (his representative). In case of filing
complaints in person, the applicant (representative of the applicant) must
submit an identity document.

Credentials
a representative to sign the complaint must be confirmed by a power of attorney,
executed in accordance with the legislation.

Credentials
a person acting on behalf of an organization without a power of attorney based on the law,
other regulatory legal acts and constituent documents are confirmed
documents certifying his official position, as well as constituent

and the powers of the legal representatives of an individual are confirmed
documents stipulated by the legislation of the Russian Federation.

8.
The received complaint is subject to registration no later than a working day,
following the day of admission.

9.
The maximum period for consideration of a complaint is 15 working days from the date of its
registration. The term for consideration of a complaint is 5 working days from the date of its
registration in cases of appeal by the applicant:

9.1.
Refusal to accept documents.

9.2.
Refusal to correct typos and errors in documents issued in
the result of the provision of public services.

9.3.
Violations of the term for correcting typos and errors.

10.
Based on the results of the consideration of the complaint, a decision is made on its satisfaction
(in whole or in part) or on refusal of satisfaction.

11.
The decision must contain:

11.1.
The name of the executive authority that considered the complaint, position,
last name, first name, patronymic (if any) of the official who made the decision on
complaint.

11.2.
Details of the decision (number, date, place of adoption).

11.3.
Surname, name, patronymic (if any), information about the applicant’s place of residence –
an individual or the name, information about the location of the applicant –
legal entity.

11.4.

12.
The decision is made in writing using official forms.

13.
Among the measures indicated in the decision to eliminate the identified violations, including
including:

13.1.
Cancellation of previously made decisions (in whole or in part).

13.2.
Ensuring the receipt and registration of the request, registration and issuance to the applicant
receipts (in case of evasion or unjustified refusal to accept documents and their
registration).

the rights and freedoms of the applicant.

The filing of a complaint by a person whose authority has not been confirmed in accordance with the procedure
established by the regulatory legal acts of the Russian Federation and the city
Moscow.

14.3.
The applicant does not have the right to receive public services.

14.4.
Stock:

14.4.1.
The court decision that has entered into legal force on the complaint of the applicant with identical
subject and grounds.

14.4.2.
A decision on a complaint previously made in a pre-trial (out-of-court) procedure in relation to
the same applicant and on the same subject of the complaint (except in cases
appealing earlier decisions to a higher authority).

14.5.
The complaint does not allow to establish those decisions and actions (inaction) of the authorities
the executive power of the city of Moscow, their subordinate organizations, which
are appealed (the subject of the appeal is not defined).

15.
The complaint shall be left unanswered on the merits in the following cases:

15.1.
The presence in the complaint of obscene or offensive language, threats to life,
health and property of officials, as well as members of their families.

15.2.
If the text of the complaint (part of it), name, postal address and email address
mails are unreadable.

15.3.
If the complaint does not indicate the name of the applicant (the applicant’s representative) or
postal address and e-mail address to which should be sent
answer.

15.4.
Upon admission to the body authorized to consider a complaint, a petition
the applicant (representative of the applicant) to withdraw the complaint pending a decision on
complaint.

16.
Decisions to satisfy the complaint or to refuse to satisfy it are sent
the applicant (representative of the applicant) no later than the working day following
by the day of their adoption, at the postal address indicated in the complaint. Optional

19.
Filing a complaint in a pre-trial (out-of-court) procedure does not exclude the applicant’s right
(the applicant’s representative) for the simultaneous or subsequent filing of a complaint with the court.

20.
Informing applicants about the judicial and pre-trial (out-of-court) procedure
appeal against decisions and actions (inaction) committed when providing
public service must be carried out by:

20.1.
Posting relevant information on the Portal.

20.2.
Advising applicants, including by phone, email,
personal reception.

21.
If during the examination of the complaint, signs of composition
administrative offenses or criminal offenses
materials must be sent to the authorities authorized to initiate proceedings
in cases of administrative offenses and in criminal cases, during
