While many modern tech gadgets tout sophisticated charging methods (e.g., using solar power), alkaline batteries remain a staple power source for most electronics. Duracell’s CopperTop AA alkaline battery-pack particularly stands out due to its unique construction and long life.

Duracell developed two categories for its product line to cater to the varying needs of its customers: the CopperTop and Procell alkaline batteries. The latter was primarily designed for industrial users, while CopperTop batteries are marketed to consumers. The idea was to provide batteries that could deliver the desired level of power for consumer needs, and these Duracell CopperTop batteries have proved reliable.

Since it is an alkaline battery rated at 9V, it provides dependable and long-lasting power for high-draining and low-draining devices, including flashlights, toys, remotes, and smoke detectors. On average, alkaline batteries provide 10 for continuous use. This means a low power device like a wireless keyboard, trackball, or mouse can use the batteries for nine or more months before needing replacement. However, for a single battery LED flashlight, the battery provides a reasonable 1.5 hours of juice.

This capacity curve is typical of alkaline batteries as their chemical composition generates an internal resistance that minimizes usable capacity at extremely high discharge rates. It explains why low power devices last longer than high power devices.

On the same note, Duracell is all about upholding the safety of your electronic devices by guaranteeing the batteries against defects in craft and material. As such, if any of your gadgets is damaged due to a battery defect, the company repairs or replaces it. And the good news is that the guarantee extends to ten years.

The renowned brand is famed for producing long-lasting batteries, and this four-pack alkaline battery lives up to the hype. With a shelf-life of ten years, you are confident the batteries will be operational even after a decade. What’s more, its cardboard package makes it easy to open and store if not using all four batteries.

For many customers, the first question that pops when buying batteries is if they leak. Well, you can trust Energizer’s leakproof construction that keeps the contents in the battery intact for up to two years. Also, the company offers to repair or replace devices damaged by leakage from its alkaline batteries two years after full use of the battery or during their useful life.

Anker, a purveyor of all things power, finally introduced a line of batteries available in AA and AAA sizes. While it seems a little late for the company to release this kind of product, it has managed to curve its path owing to the overwhelming customer response. Anker decided to introduce a range of other products along with the batteries (security devices, audio products, power tools, dash cams, to mention a few), and they have all lived up to the brand’s hype.

This 24 AA pack is particularly handy for the customer looking for an affordable set of batteries to power different household gadgets. Unlike other Alkaline battery packs, the Anker pack doesn’t come in a clear plastic cover to display the batteries. The company packs them in a white and blue box, adding to their safety when shipping. The batteries are arranged in two sets, each holding 12 batteries, and the box holding AA batteries appears larger than one used to package AAA batteries.

As for their durability, the batteries have a ten-year shelf life and have universal compatibility. As such, if you aren’t using all the batteries at once, you are confident to use them even after three years. What’s more, Anker uses a special PowerLock Ring that seals the energy inside the casing until it is ready for use. The interlocking mechanism and a rubber seal prevent leaks into the battery’s components.

Another feature that makes the Anker’s AA batteries stand out is their ability to use cutting-edge components that make recycling easy. Generally, the batteries are made from recycled parts, and they don’t contain cadmium or mercury.

Rayovac is a relatively new addition to the industry, but so far, it holds up pretty well competing with renowned brands like Energizer. The brand primarily focuses on producing AA batteries for industrial applications, but they are also great for powering household items. With this eight pack of alkaline batteries, you can pair it with high-draining medical devices.

By comparison, the batteries perform just like Energizer’s batteries. Their shelf life is, however, shorter, only able to last ten years. As for standard features like leak protection, the batteries are well-sealed to avoid damaging your devices. The leakproof layer protects against short-circuiting too.

Short-circuiting is one problem associated with batteries, especially when a high current flows through a cell, causing a spike in temperatures. Luckily RayVac’s batteries have been tested twice prior to shipment to ensure they are safe for use. You can use them without worrying about battery explosion.

In addition, the batteries are free of mercury, enhancing your safety during use. The use of mercury in batteries has declined sharply over the years after the Mercury-Containing and Rechargeable Battery Management Act of 1996. The act led to the production of mercury-free alkaline batteries, which has since become a national standard. Previously, manufacturers used mercury in batteries to reduce gas build-up known to cause batteries to leak and bulge.

AA batteries are the cream of the crop when it comes to batteries. They account for about 50% of batteries sold in the U.S., and although we are in an age where built-in batteries are the modern trend, these batteries are not going anywhere.  But as noted, they are not made equal. There several factors to consider when picking which batteries are the best for your unique needs. The first thing to keep in mind when looking to buy the best AA batteries is that they can either be rechargeable or non-rechargeable.

Important Factors To Consider

Rechargeable AA batteries are the most popular nowadays. They are often sold in multiples, usually between 2, 4 6, or even 24 batteries, complete with a charger. Such packs are pretty convenient if you have multiple gadgets in your household that rely on classic AA batteries. The main advantage of rechargeable AA batteries is that they are rechargeable. This makes them a cost-effective option because you’ll be sorted out for a long time once you purchase a pack. Their rechargeable nature also makes them eco-friendly.

Non-rechargeable batteries, on the other hand, are just as the name suggests, non-rechargeable. The most popular types of AA batteries under this category include lithium and alkaline batteries. Note, lithium batteries are not the same as li-ion batteries.

Li-ion batteries are what you find in smartphones, laptops, and other modern devices and are rechargeable. Lithium batteries are non-rechargeable, have a longer shelf life, and do not leak.  Lithium batteries have a longer shelf life, and they don’t leak. This makes them the best AA batteries for short term use in high-drain devices like cameras or low-drain gadgets like smoke alarms where power requirements are low, but stability is critical.

Alkaline non-rechargeable AA batteries, on the other hand, are the most common. They are versatile and are what you will find in wall clocks, TV remotes, grooming gadgets, and a ton of other essential household and non-household gadgets. The key advantage of alkaline batteries is that they’re widely available. Also, they are cheaper and are super-versatile. However, they tend to leak over time, which means they need to be replaced regularly, or otherwise, they may damage your valuable devices and equipment.

Now that you know about the most popular categories, can AA batteries explode? Well, while explosions are rare, they do occur. An AA battery will explode or rapture violently if exposed to high temperatures, mixed with other wrong capacity batteries, or inserted in the wrong direction. In other words, an AA battery will only explode if subjected to conditions it’s not designed to handle. Therefore, you have nothing to worry about if you use the best AA batteries per manufacturer’s instructions.

Q: Are all AA batteries the same?

All AA batteries are not the same since most disposable ones supply 1.5 volts, while the rechargeable ones typically produce 1.2 volts depending on the alkaline configuration. Most household devices that need an AA battery will usually take any variant of the same. The most notable differences between AA batteries are caused by the chemicals powering them and the configurations. Regarding the internal components, the commonest chemicals in an AA dry cell include Zinc Carbon and an Alkaline, while the rechargeable ones include Nicad and Lithium. The differences seen in usage come from the quality of metals and the level of purity of the components.

Q: Why do AA batteries get hot?

Batteries get hot when they have been subjected to heavy use or in case of an external short circuit. The best AA batteries will remain cool if they are just sitting in a remote or clock. Internal short circuits are quite rare since they only happen if the physical components in a battery are moved to the point of making an unwanted contact. Such scenarios only happen if the battery has been dropped or dented.  The short circuit makes it discharge rapidly such that external cooling can’t keep up leading to excessive heat. External short circuits may also cause your AA battery to overheat under rare circumstances. If you store the battery alongside metallic components and naked wires, it is possible for the items to cause a short circuit by linking the top and bottom terminals.

Q: Are AAA batteries bigger than AA?

AAA batteries are not bigger in capacity than AA ones. In fact, AA batteries are bigger in diameter and deliver more current than AAA variants. The major selling point of AA batteries over AAA is their ability to deliver more power to the device you are using. AAA batteries are often used in smaller electronic devices or gadgets that are supposed to maintain a low footprint and weight. If you use larger appliances, they will mostly require AA batteries. Device manufacturers will usually indicate the battery size that you need to fit in the compartment. In case it is not shown, you can test two older batteries and use the one with a snug fit.

Q: How long do AA batteries hold a charge?

The battery life of an AA battery depends on the intensity of the usage. If you leave AA batteries on a shelf and not use it, they will take several years to drain. Some of the best AA batteries can last almost 10 years before the last bit of juice dries up. If you use the battery in a clock or a remote control, you are looking at one or two years. More aggressive use cases will kill the battery in a few days or hours. For example, a kid’s electric toy that has two motors, five LEDs, and a speaker for honking will drain an AA battery in a few days.

Q: Which AA batteries last the longest?

The best AA batteries should stay charged for several months with moderate use. Most manufacturers sell premium and affordable AA batteries. In most cases, the premium variants will last longer than average ones because of the component used in the manufacturing process. While price alone is not enough to tell you how long an AA will last, it may help you compare two products from the same company. Going for the most expensive AA batteries does not always guarantee top quality. The best way to determine which AA battery lasts longer than the rest is to compare how fast they discharge in an intensive test.

Disposable & Rechargeable Batteries at Ace Hardware

From remote controls and flashlights to alarm clocks and watches, many of the devices you use on a regular basis are powered by batteries. Ace Hardware carries a large variety of disposable and rechargeable batteries from top brands like Energizer, Duracell and Eveready.

Learn about the differences between disposable and rechargeable batteries to find the right batteries for all your devices with the following guide.

How Do Batteries Work?

Batteries have positive and negative terminals on each end. They contain collections of one or more cells that undergo chemical reactions to establish a flow of electrons within a circuit. Batteries are comprised of three main components:

  • Anodes (negative electrodes)
  • Cathodes (positive electrodes)
  • Electrolytes

Disposable vs. Rechargeable Batteries

Batteries can be classified into different categories and types which vary based on their chemical composition, size and other factors. The two main battery classification types are disposable and rechargeable batteries. Here’s a basic breakdown of the differences between disposable and rechargeable batteries:

Disposable Batteries

Also called primary batteries, these batteries can’t be recharged once depleted. Disposable batteries range in size and form, and some of the most common types include:

  • AA batteries
  • AAA batteries
  • C batteries
  • D batteries
  • 3 volt batteries

Disposable batteries are typically used in standalone devices where the use of a rechargeable battery charger might be impractical or impossible. Devices that use disposable batteries are usually designed to consume low amounts of power to enable long-lasting battery life. Common examples include wall clocks, pacemakers, children’s toys and remote controls.

Most disposable batteries are alkaline-based. Alkaline batteries are cost-effective and environmentally friendly. These batteries can be stored for many years, and they aren’t prone to leaking even when fully discharged.

A potential downside of alkaline batteries is their low load currents which may limit their ability to be useful on devices with high current requirements like flashlights, portable and entertainment devices.

Rechargeable Batteries

Also referred to as secondary batteries, rechargeable batteries are lead-based. They’re comprised of lead anodes, lead dioxide cathodes and sulfuric acid electrolytes. The need for rechargeable batteries has significantly increased in recent years due to the rise in portable devices like cell phones, MP3 players and microphones. If you have a device that frequently burns through batteries it could benefit you to invest in a rechargeable battery and charging dock.

Some of the most common types of rechargeable batteries include:

  • Lithium batteries (LiOn)
  • Nickel-metal hydride batteries (NiMH)
  • Nickel-cadmium batteries (NiCd)

Typically, Ni-Cad and NiHM batteries are used in cordless phones and have a cord that plugs directly into the device.

With NiCd and NiMH batteries, recharging the batteries can be somewhat tricky. Overcharging the batteries could lead to decreased capacity. For this reason, many rechargeable battery chargers are equipped with a trickle charge system that automatically shuts off once charging is complete.

Even rechargeable batteries will eventually die, although they may last for hundreds of charges before that occurs. If they do reach the end of their use, it’s important to recycle them at a designated recycling facility.

Household Battery Recycling

Household batteries, commonly known as dry cell batteries, are comprised of an anode, a cathode, and an electrolyte. The anode is a positive terminal, the cathode is the negative terminal, and the electrolyte is the chemical solution through which the electrons flow from the anode to the cathode, creating an electrical charge. Various metals are used in the cathodes and anodes. The following summary provides general information on the recycling options for household batteries.

Important Note on Recycling or Disposing of Batteries: When preparing any batteries for recycling or disposal, always cover the electrical contacts or battery ends with a non-conductive tape (electrical or vinyl tape) or seal individual batteries in separate plastic bags (like Ziploc® bags or similar) so that they cannot conduct electricity. This helps eliminate potential fire or explosion hazard when the batteries are collected together in a bulk container.

Rechargeable Battery Types

Nickel Cadmium Batteries

Nickel cadmium batteries consist of a nickel cathode, a cadmium anode, and an alkaline solution for an electrolyte. These batteries are rechargeable and are found in traditional cylindrical battery sizes as well as in a wide variety of battery packs. The battery packs are used in items such as cordless telephones, cordless power tools, hand-held vacuums and video cameras. Cadmium is a toxic metal that can pose a threat to human health and the environment. Nickel cadmium batteries are labeled with the chemical symbol Ni-Cd.

Call2Recycle is a product stewardship program providing no-cost battery and cell phone recycling solutions across the United States and Canada. Operated by Call2Recycle, Inc., a 501 (c)4 nonprofit public service organization, the program is funded by battery and product manufacturers committed to responsible recycling. For more information on where to recycle nickel cadmium batteries in your area, please log onto Call2Recycle or to use their Drop-off site locator by telephone, please call 1-877-273-2925. Participating retail collection points include Batteries Plus, Home Depot, Lowes, Radio Shack, Sears and Staples. This battery type can also be taken to one of our Pennsylvania’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Program events. The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program webpage contains a complete list of these HHW collection events.

Nickel Metal Hydride Batteries

Nickel metal hydride batteries are more environmentally friendly than nickel cadmium due to the absence of toxic cadmium. The anode is a metal alloy that absorbs hydrogen and the cathode is nickel oxide. The electrolyte is potassium hydroxide. These batteries can be found in camcorders, cell phones and power tools. They have many of the same performance characteristics as nickel cadmium.

These batteries are labeled with the symbol NiMH and have the same recycling options as what is listed for Nickel Cadmium Batteries above.

Nickel Zinc Batteries

Nickel Zinc (Ni-Zn) batteries are newer to the marketplace and can be found in digital cameras and wireless keyboards.

These batteries have the same recycling options as what is listed for Nickel Cadmium Batteries above.

Lithium Ion Batteries

Lithium ion batteries that are rechargeable are most commonly found in digital cameras, cell phones and lap top computers. They contain and use lithium metallic oxide for a cathode and a carbon material as an anode. The electrolyte is a lithium salt.

This battery type can be recycled through Call2Recycling, Inc, or you can use their Drop-off site locator by telephone, 1-877-273-2925. Participating retail collection points include Batteries Plus, Home Depot, Lowes, Radio Shack, Sears and Staples. They also can be taken to one of our Pennsylvania HHW Collection events. The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program webpage contains a complete list of these HHW collection events.

Nonrechargeable Battery Types

Alkaline and Zinc Carbon Batteries

Alkaline and Zinc Carbon Batteries typically contain a manganese dioxide cathode and a zinc anode. The electrolyte in an alkaline battery is usually potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide, while in a zinc carbon battery the electrolyte is ammonium chloride or zinc chloride. In the past, mercury was added to these batteries to prevent corrosion and the creation of hydrogen gas. Recent laws have restricted the levels of mercury allowed in alkaline and zinc-carbon batteries. Today, alkaline batteries on the market are required to have zero-added mercury and are no longer hazardous.

There are limited options for recycling alkaline and zinc carbon batteries. AERC Recycling Solutions (Allentown) at phone number 1-866-447-5177 recycles these battery types. In addition, INMETCO, a metals reclamation facility in Pennsylvania also recycles alkaline and zinc carbon batteries. Their company web link is: and their telephone number is: 724-758-2800. Please note that AERC and INMETCO charge fees to recycle these battery types. Alkaline and zinc carbon battery types no longer contain mercury and they may be disposed in your normal household trash.

For residents residing in Allegheny, Dauphin, Elk and Lancaster counties, alkaline and zinc carbon batteries can still be dropped off free of charge thanks to the Authority, County and/or business partnership absorbing the recycling costs. In addition, residents in counties or municipalities with curbside household hazardous waste collection, can recycle alkaline batteries as part of the curbside HHW program. Information on each of these free alkaline and zinc carbon battery recycling outlets for these residents can be found by clicking on the links below.

Lithium Button Cell Batteries

Lithium button batteries are button cells used primarily for cameras and contain a lithium anode and various types of cathodes and electrolytes. Lithium is a highly reactive metal and when collected with other button cells may present a hazard if not fully discharged. Lithium button cells do not contain mercury.

Recycling options in Pennsylvania include participating in one of our Pennsylvania Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events. The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program webpage contains a complete list of these HHW collection events. In addition, AERC Recycling Solutions and INMETCO will recycle this battery type for a fee.

Silver Oxide Batteries

Silver oxide batteries are button cells commonly used in watches, calculators and hearing aids. They contain a zinc anode, silver oxide cathode and an alkaline solution for the electrolyte. They also contain a small amount of mercury to prevent the formation of gas.

Most jewelry stores will recycle the silver oxide battery when you bring your watch in to have the battery replaced. Otherwise, this battery type can be taken to one of our Pennsylvania Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events. The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program webpage contains a complete list of these HHW collection events. In addition, AERC Recycling Solutions will recycle this battery type for a fee.

Zinc-Air Batteries

Zinc-air batteries are button cells used primarily for hearing aids. This battery type has a zinc anode, oxygen from the atmospheric air acts as the cathode and an alkaline solution is used as the electrolyte. This battery type contains about one percent mercury by weight, which serves as a gas suppressant.

Zinc-air batteries can be taken to one of our Pennsylvania Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events. The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program webpage contains a complete list of these HHW collection events. In addition, AERC Recycling Solutions and INMETCO will recycle this battery type for a fee.

Where to Recycle All Sorts Of Batteries

Where to Recycle All Sorts Of Batteries

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably got a drawer harboring dozens of worn-out batteries (and maybe an electric toothbrush) that you don’t know what to do with.  Today, that confusion ends.

Here’s all you need to know about recycling batteries and cordless gadgets.

TL;DR – check out this chart.

There are two main categories of batteries: single-use batteries which are batteries that can only hold one charge before they are useless, and rechargeable batteries which can be charged again and again. Rechargeable batteries are becoming much more common as cellphones, laptops, tablets, and cordless tools become more popular.

Disposal options vary by battery type, so let’s break them down.

Single-Use Batteries

ALKALINE, Single-Use

Alkaline batteries, originally developed in the ’60s, no longer contain the high levels of mercury they once did.  The Illinois EPA and all states except California agree that alkaline batteries can be safely disposed of in the trash.

Commonly identified as: alkaline, zero mercury, or 0%Hg

Disposal:  Alkaline batteries are the only batteries that can safely be placed in the trash cart. No batteries of any kind should be placed in City recycling carts.

Recycling of alkaline batteries is possible through mail-in recycling programs, for a fee. Battery Solutions and Big Green Box offer such programs.  If you know of any free, certified recycling programs in Chicago, please let us know at [email protected] or on social media at @recyclebycity.

LITHIUM, Single-Use

Coin batteries for watches are often lithium. More recently, lithium batteries have been showing up in standard size A-AAA, C, D, and 9V sizes as well. Because they can hold a charge longer than alkaline batteries and pack a lot of power into a small size, single-use lithium are a favorite for cameras and game controllers too.

Commonly identified as: lithium, Li, primary lithium, lithium metal

Disposal: Lithium batteries cannot be disposed of in City recycling or garbage carts because they can combust just like rechargeable batteries can. Check the chart below for disposal options.

Rechargeable Batteries

Rechargeable batteries come in all shapes and sizes and can be designed to be removable or built-in. Rechargeable batteries are also sold in standard sizes as a less wasteful replacement to single-use batteries.

Improvements in battery manufacturing have made rechargeable less expensive, more powerful and dependable than they were a decade ago. Rechargeable batteries are generally smaller than single-use ones and produce less waste because they can be used again and again. Some types of rechargeable batteries can be recharged up to 1000 times.

If you haven’t considered replacing your single-use batteries with rechargeable ones, now’s a good time to give it a go. Though they cost 2 – 3 times more initially, they can save a good deal of money and waste in the long run.

One tradeoff for the extra power and convenience of rechargeable batteries is that they can explode or spark fires if not disposed of properly.

Rechargeable batteries are responsible for starting fires in collection trucks, recycling facilities, and landfills. Unlike single-use batteries, rechargeable batteries can spark even after they’re drained of power so they pose a real hazard. They can also combust if crushed, dropped, or overheated. Rechargeable battery recycling programs ensure safe disposal and the recovery of precious, limited-supply heavy metals like cobalt, which is reused to make new batteries and electronics.

Commonly identified as: Lithium Ion, Li-Ion, Nickel Metal Hydride, Ni-MH, Nickel Cadmium, NiCd, Small Sealed Lead Acid (SSLA/Pb)

Disposal: All rechargeable batteries, including auto batteries and devices with built-in rechargeable batteries, can be dropped off at the City of Chicago’s Household Chemical and Computer Recycling Facility (HCCRF) for recycling. The HCCRF accepts all batteries except single-use alkaline batteries

Most national electronic retailers provide battery recycling programs for removable rechargeable batteries, see chart below. Do not place rechargeable batteries in City recycling or garbage carts.

Prepping Batteries for Storage and Transport

Remove batteries that are designed to be removed because you’ll have more disposal options. Never attempt to remove built-in batteries because they can explode.

Safety first! For storage and transportation, place tape over the battery contacts or place them into individual plastic bags.  Exposed battery contacts can spark and cause fires.
