Spotlight store hack: Aussie shoppers charged thousands for fake transactions

Aussie shoppers were charged thousands after credit card information was allegedly hacked from Spotlight.

When Claire checked her bank account on Tuesday to track her spending, straightaway she noticed something very unusual.

Nestled amongst her recent purchase history were six identical transitions from Apple, each one for the same amount: $149.99 – which totalled nearly $900.

“I panicked. I was trying to think where on earth someone had gotten my details from to make these payments,” the Perth woman tells Kidspot.

“I hadn’t even ordered online from Spotlight for months”

Her heart racing, Claire called her bank to work out what had happened – which was when she learned that her credit card details had been leaked.

The bank told her that her details had been exposed after Spotlight and Anaconda, both owned by parent company Spotlight Retail Group, were “hacked”.

“I knew I hadn’t purchased anything from Anaconda – so it only left it to be Spotlight,” Claire explains.

“I was totally shocked, knowing that I hadn’t even ordered from Spotlight for months. I’ve only shopped online with them once, in November 2020.

“I felt sick to my stomach! How on earth could this happen! I never would have thought this would have happened from a well-known company such as Spotlight!”

Other Aussies affected by Spotlight hack

Thankfully, Claire was told that the money taken from her account would be refunded within 40 days and she would be provided with a new card.

“Thankfully I have savings so will be okay until then but I know many people wouldn’t,” she gratefully adds.

It’s for this reason that Claire decided to publically share her story, posting on a popular Australian craft group on Facebook to warn others to check their accounts.

Within hours of her post going live, at least nine other shoppers commented to say they’d also been affected by the hack.

One mum reported that a massive $17K had been overdrawn on her credit card on Friday in under five minutes.

“I’ve shopped at both Anaconda and Spotlight in-store and online. The bank tells you not to worry but you feel violated,” the shocked mum wrote.

“Hackers took $1,200 my credit card”

Someone else reported a similar incident, commenting that their credit card had been maxed out after 33 fraudulent charges went through over the weekend.

“I haven’t bought anything online from Spotlight in over a year,” the concerned shopper said.

“It’s on my credit card too. I bought at Spotlight online last night,” another mum said.

“I have nine transactions and as speaking to bank another one came through. So that’s $149.99 times 10.”

Meanwhile, someone else reported that their mother had nearly $1,500 taken from her account after purchasing from Spotlight and Anaconda before Christmas, while another customer said that eight transactions of $149.99 had been put through on her account.

“I heard my phone go off early hours of this morning and I checked it in case it was an emergency. Before I could lock my card they had got $1,200!” she exclaimed.

“I was pissed! When I called the bank they said it’s a common scam at the moment.”

In a statement to Kidspot, a Spotlight spokesperson said that “if a customer has any reason to suspect an issue with a Spotlight transaction,” they should “contact our customer care team directly”.

Spotlight plans 50 new Harris Scarfe stores in five years

The new owners of collapsed discount department chain Harris Scarfe are planning to open 50 new stores of the once-struggling chain in the next five years, despite increasingly staunch competition from corporate competitors Target and Big W.

In an interview with The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald, Spotlight Group executive deputy chairman and rich lister Zac Fried said the company had been very pleased with Harris Scarfe’s performance in the retailer’s portfolio, which also includes fabric retailer Spotlight and outdoors merchant Anaconda.

“Harris Scarfe is well on its way to its former glory, and we’re very happy with its performance to date,” he said. “Like Spotlight and Anaconda, we’re hoping it’ll be part of the business for many many years to come.”

Multibillion-dollar retail giant Spotlight Group is Harris Scarfe’s fourth owner in the past seven years, with the brand owned by South African retailer Greenlit until mid-2019 when it was acquired by private equity firm Allegro. Months later, it entered administration before being bought by Spotlight last March.

Mr Fried said since acquiring the business, Spotlight had been undertaking a full revitalisation of the brand, including re-educating staff, refreshing IT systems and improving the company’s marketing.

“We’re just about to sign off on a fairly large capex in the multimillion-dollar range to redo all the existing stores,” he said. “So that’s getting the signage up to date, tweaking store designs, and lifting Harris Scarfe up to the same level as Spotlight and Anaconda.

With this revamp underway, Mr Fried – who runs the Spotlight Group alongside his uncle Morry Fraid – has now set his sights on opening new locations.

“There’s going to be a lot of growth there, we want to get it back to 100 stores fairly quickly,” Mr Fried said. “We don’t have to rush to do it over 12 months, it can happen over a five-year period, but we’re going to do it pretty quickly.”

Custom Ordered Sheers

Firstly was on hold for 55 mins to make an appointment for Sally to come out to measure. Appointment was made for 2 weeks time then the day before that appointment I received a text stating Sally can’t come out now for another 3 weeks.

Sally finally came out and I proceeded with the quote that day and paid my 50% deposit. This was in November.

At the end of January after weeks of chasing my order they were finally ready.

Install was booked for early Feb I took an unpaid leave day for Wayne the installer to not turn up I rang your head office again on hold for almost an hour to get re-scheduled again for 8 days time again I proceeded with another unpaid day off work for Wayne to not turn up a 2nd time. Again back on the phone to head office another waist of 55 minutes to be told another installer will 100% be there on Saturday to install sheers. Well he didn’t turn up either stating that my sheers were in Wayne’s the other installers van and he’s not answering calls.

So here I am 3 promised install dates with no shows, another 55 min call awaits me on Monday morning to arrange it for the 4th time probably to be let down again. It’s been 4 months you have all my money for weeks and I’m still without privacy in my home.

You should be giving me my money back this type of customer service is utterly disgraceful. Shameful experience Spotlight.

Spotlight Canberra opens to roaring first day of trade | The Canberra Times

news, business,

A line snaked out the door and into the car park as the first Spotlight store opened in Canberra, in busy Gungahlin, on Wednesday. Social distancing considerations as well as the desire of keen shoppers to find an opening-day special led to the long line at the store in Crinigan Circle, near Bunnings. Store manager Danny Poole said the new store, which covers 2587 square metres, had already been embraced by the community. “It’s been an absolute success,” he said. “Obviously the community is very happy that we’re here.” Fans of the haberdashery and homewares chain have had, until now, to go to Spotlight in Queanbeyan to get their fix. Balloons, a visit by Paw Patrol and food and coffee added to the opening day festivities at the Gungahlin centre which is in a new strip of shops including Anaconda and PetBarn. Mr Poole said about 50 people would be employed in the new Spotlight. Gungahlin residents such as Rachel Jabs of Palmerston found plenty of bargains on the first day. “I love it,” she said. “It’s so good we don’t have to go to Queanbeyan anymore.” Mr Poole said the reason Spotlight hadn’t come to Canberra earlier was simple. “I think finding the right site, that’s what it came down to,” he said. “And I think they’ve more than found the right site, they’ve nailed it.”
