Partner Spotlight: TITLE Boxing Club

This week, we sat down with John Sahakian, owner of TITLE Boxing Club in Rockville and North Bethesda, to learn about their unique, full-body workout, and how MightyMeals helps their members stay on-track when it comes to portion control.

How did TITLE Boxing Club get its start?

John: TITLE is a franchise that started in Kansas City in 2008 and now has over 160 locations in 22 states and three countries.  I worked in corporate America for 20 years, and I left my job not knowing what the heck I was going to do with my life. I began working with a franchise coach in order to look into which franchises would be the best to own. They narrowed down the list of which companies I should look into, and TITLE was one of them.  I flew out to Kansas City, met with the owners, and did the workout (and was extremely sore)! I was into fitness but had never tried boxing. It really made me appreciate what an intense workout it is. Boxing has been around forever, but people are just now realizing it is a great full body workout. So, I went for it; our Rockville location has been open for five years now, and we have a second location in North Bethesda.

What makes TITLE unique?

John: I would say, definitely the workout itself. There’s something about using a 100lb bag in your workout that makes it different.  It’s truly a full body workout, not just upper body. People are always surprised when their legs are super sore the next day. It really works out your core too. It’s a huge calorie burner, and a huge stress reliever. You can hit that 100lb bag as much as you want, release a lot of endorphins, and feel like you are on top of the world. It’s really cool to know that you are learning an actual skill here. To hit a heavy bag requires a certain level of skill, and you feel like you are actually learning something. We really stress the word ‘club’ not ‘gym.’ Our sense of community here is a big part of who we are. There’s a really welcoming feeling when you walk in; our members feel like it’s their second home. We offer kickboxing and MMA, as well.

How did you get connected to MightyMeals?

John: I initially heard about MightyMeals through your Media and PR partner, Tiffany McCasland, who just happens to be married to one of my business partners, Chris. I then connected with MightyMeals co-founder Dan Graziano. We had a member appreciation day with vendors, etc. MightyMeals had a table set up, and it was a big hit. I’m always looking for ways that I can benefit my members so they can get more out of their membership here. It doesn’t hurt that the meals are fresh and delicious!

How does MightyMeals benefit your members?

Low Carb Bulgogi

John: A lot of my members are coming in specifically with a goal of losing weight.  Portion control is a big problem; these days everyone is so busy and there is practically no time to meal prep.  There are not always healthy choices around that are quick to prepare or eat. MightyMeals’ portion-controlled dishes not only help them lose weight, it saves them time and creates an opportunity for more work-life balance.  TITLE being a MightyMeals pick-up location adds more value to their membership, and it has been a seamless process for our employees to adapt to, as well.

What is your favorite MightyMeal?

John: I have several favorites, but if I had to choose one, I think it would be the Low Carb Bulgogi.

About John Sahakian
John was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Potomac, Maryland. He went to Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda and attended Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, North Carolina. He worked 20 years for a Fortune 500 company, locally as well as in Germany and St. Louis. John has always been into fitness. While looking into what he was going to do next in the chapter of his life, he stumbled across the TITLE Boxing Club. John’s biggest enjoyment has not only been bringing the results people want out of a fitness routine, but the culture and TITLE family that has come from opening his first location in Rockville.

BOXING: Ugás seizes late-career spotlight, takes a shot at Pacquiao

This is the life Yordenis Ugás imagined when he decided to leave Cuba.

He wanted to be in a boxing ring with somebody like Manny Pacquiao under the Vegas spotlight, fighting for a championship belt in front of the whole world.

Ugás wanted this future so badly that he attempted to defect six times. He says he was sent to prison after the failed attempts, even though he won an Olympic bronze medal in Beijing.

He finally got to Mexico in 2010 after two perilous days in a small boat. He eventually made it to Miami, yet he still paid another price: He couldn’t see his family, including his mother, for nine years.

“This has been a long road for me,” Ugás said through an interpreter. “Obviously it was short notice that I learned I was fighting Pacquiao. But I’m thankful for the opportunity, and I’m ready to take advantage of it.

Indeed, the 35-year-old Ugás’ two decades of hard work and sacrifice finally paid off in a flash earlier this month.

Errol Spence Jr., the vaunted welterweight champion slated to fight Pacquiao in a pay-per-view show Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena, discovered he had a detached retina during a pre-fight physical.

Spence needed surgery, and Pacquiao (62-7-2, 39 KOs) quickly needed a new opponent before he got back to his day job, which probably includes an imminent run for president of the Philippines.

Ugás (26-4, 12 KOs) was scheduled to fight on the undercard, and he already held a welterweight belt that had been taken away from Pacquiao by the WBA. He was finally in the perfect place at the ideal time to get a fight and a payday with the potential to change his life.

Too often in his life and career, Ugás had been in the wrong place. Now that he has the break he chased for so long, Ugás is determined not to waste it.

“There are no excuses heading into this fight,” Ugás said. “I’ve been in this position taking a short-notice fight before, although obviously never against a fighter the caliber of Pacquiao. I have no concerns, though.”

Although Ugás has found it painful in the past when his life didn’t fit the future he had imagined, he has been through enough to appreciate an opportunity like this without allowing it to consume him.

His pro career has moved on swells and troughs. He started 11-0, but Top Rank unceremoniously released him in 2012 after his first professional loss, a split-decision defeat in which he didn’t look sharp enough for Bob Arum’s promotion.

Ugás then stepped away from competitive boxing for two years from 2014 to 2016 after back-to-back decision losses that he found unfair. He says he was depressed and living in New Jersey, eating ramen and struggling to figure out what to do after failing at boxing.

He found salvation from Aroldis Chapman, the baseball closer who loves boxing and informally sponsors defector fighters from their mutual homeland. Ugás says Chapman paid for him to move to Vegas to resume his training, and he returned to the ring in August 2016 with the first of eight straight wins.

A debatable split-decision loss to Shawn Porter in 2019 prevented him from winning the WBC welterweight title, but only improved his stock in the boxing world. He is with Premier Boxing Champions, which has given him regular platforms — and thanks to Spence’s unfortunate injury, he was in position to take the biggest stage of all.

There are plenty of reasons to believe Ugás has more than a puncher’s chance against the Filipino senator. Pacquiao is 42, and he is coming off the longest layoff of his quarter-century in pro boxing.

“I have prepared for 12 hard rounds,” Ugás said. “If this is Pacquiao’s final fight, then he’s going to be up against a guy who brought his best and who is a world-class fighter.”

But no matter what happens, Ugás will be glad he was in the ring.

After two decades of ups and owns, Ugás is now a successful fighter with a comfortable life and a loving family in Florida. He dotes on his 6-year-old autistic son, Yordenis Jr., and he speaks out on social media about his still-simmering dislike of the Cuban government, saying, “in our country you cannot progress, you cannot think and you cannot live.”

When he stands across from Pacquiao, he will finally be in position to punctuate all of his struggles and work with a performance that would stun fans from Manila to Havana. If he succeeds, he’ll be thinking of how far he traveled to get there.

“More than anything, I am a fighter who represents my country of Cuba,” he said. “This fight is dedicated to all the people who are fighting for freedom in Cuba, I’m fighting for all of them.”

Sport spotlight: Boxing – Teaching Expertise

Boxing has long been absent from school sport. Tina Ryan explores its return

Who would have thought that boxing, a sport that has taken some battering over the past few decades since it was banned from the curriculum in 1962, would be making a comeback into the fold of school sport? For so long boxing was the bad guy sport, tarnished by a seedy image and media scare stories about the long-term cerebral injuries sustained by boxers. However, in recent years it has clawed back some respectability. Thanks must go, in part, to repackaged, redesigned versions, such as ‘boxercise’ and ‘boxzone’ – these new concepts have enabled the sport to cross from boxing gym to leisure club and appealed to us more leisurely partakers of exercise. And, of course, the more stringent controls introduced by the British Board of Boxing Control have contributed to making the sport safer to practise. Boxing – even without the combat side – is undoubtedly one of the most all-round challenging sports. The gruelling discipline, the mental and physical agility, coordination and sheer physical exertion involved is enough to impress even the crème de la crème of other sports. In fact many elite sportspeople regularly box-train with professional coaches as a key part of their fitness regime. No question then that boxing has something positive and even, dare I say it, unique to offer. The swing in boxing’s popularity has not gone unnoticed in education but alarm bells still ring in some quarters when it is associated with schools. So the challenge for PE professionals is to find ingenious ways to draw on its strengths and leave the negatives at the school gate. Richmond LEA found a creative way to exploit boxing. The borough has a history of using sport innovatively to address a range of diverse issues relating to children in its schools. Five years ago, Phil Davies – the director of sport and the inspiration behind the project – and teacher Wayne Simon piloted ‘Self Esteem Through Sport’ or SETS as it is now referred to. The initiative, supported by the pupil referral unit, was aimed at disaffected children who were at serious risk of permanent exclusion or criminal activity. The borough devised two- and three-year programmes for Year 10 and 9 pupils respectively that put specific children on a series of sports courses as a partial replacement to some curriculum subjects. Wayne Simon led the project, initially with a group of 15 boys from Whitton School. He said: “The pupils we approached were those who were becoming increasingly isolated – we needed a mechanism to get them attached to a group again and give them a sense of belonging. It was also important for these teenagers to achieve something we could reward them for and ultimately bring about a change in their attitudes.” Not all teachers were in favour of the initiative. Some were concerned it would look like the disruptive children were the most rewarded. Staff involved have overcome the problem well with good communication between subject teachers and Wayne Simon’s team – Simon leads with authority and charisma and ensures he is aware of what’s going on in the classroom, while teachers feed back good and bad behaviour and children are not only incentivised but penalised too. In this way, the programme works hand in hand with the curriculum and not in isolation. The school chose pupils who had at least demonstrated some interest – active or passive – in sport. Getting the parents involved was important too. Wayne Simon says: “Parents have to buy into the idea and participate in evaluating their child’s progress”. He adds that the “hands-on” approach has broadly contributed to changing some of the adults’ own attitudes to being a parent and to the role of education. SETS’ first generation teenagers showed a significant positive shift in attitudes to school and overall demeanour. Teachers reported that their concentration levels were much improved and that they interacted better with their classmates. Overall the group had gained confidence from their sporting achievements. Spurred on by its success, the programme is now in six of the borough’s schools. The objective is increasingly to catch children at an earlier stage, before negative behaviour patterns are entrenched. Children now targeted typically have poor attendance, are disruptive and are victims of bullying – or even the bullies themselves. Various sports and skills are chosen to address the specific issues and difficulties of the group members. Wayne Simon has found that water-based sports such as rowing and sculling are particularly effective in understanding the value of working together as a group and has helped improve the teenagers’ relationships with their peers. The other core sports that provide the focus of SETS include football, rugby, archery and, of course, boxing. Wayne Simon was initially concerned about teachers’ and parents’ perception of boxing and admits that it was “an uphill struggle” to persuade those involved that it had something to offer. But Simon was convinced from the outset: “We had used team sports successfully but I wanted the kids to get other things out of the programme by trying an individual sport. Boxing perhaps takes the term ‘individual’ to an extreme – it’s called the loneliest sport but it is all about self-discipline and rigour and that was what initially appealed. I also wanted to release some of the boys’ pent-up aggression.”  Simon had sought partnerships with impressive credentials for football (Brentford FC and Fulham FC) and rugby (Harlequins) and boxing was not to be outclassed. John Holland, son of Harry, a former pro-boxer in Audley Harrison’s team, owns a boxing gym in the borough. Holland Junior runs sessions for total beginners, boxers and elite sportmen alike: Harlequin rugby players and professional footballers are regulars there. John Holland, along with his colleague and ex-World Superfeatherweight Champion Barry Jones, ran a four-month boxing course for the SETS students. No sparring was involved – training focused on skills and fitness alone. The teenagers were coached in footwork, handspeed and coordination, first in front of the mirror and, as they progressed, using pads and punch-bags. Holland says: “There is a lot to think about in boxing – it’s much more mentally demanding than people imagine. The kids had to really concentrate to think on their feet and stay focused to maintain coordination and agility.” In fact, a few of the teenagers involved had already excelled in other sports, yet boxing proved to be the toughest, most gruelling of lessons. James King was one of the SETS participants. He said: “It took a lot more effort than the other sports but also the skills were more precise, there was greater technique involved – it was definitely the most challenging sport I had tried.” Enthusiasm running high from both sides, the boxing pros set about organising something special for the group. Barry Jones contacted his old friend, World Champion Joe Calzaghe, who invited the children to his gym in Cardiff for a weekend of masterclass training. Barry said: “The kids were a little in awe of their surroundings when they first walked in, as the gym was much bigger and filled with serious boxers in training. We carried on as usual with our warm up, skipping, mirror techniques and then the punchbags.  And then Joe walked in. He was clearly pleased to have the kids there and was interested in what SETS was trying to do.  James King described their time with Calzaghe: “Joe told us about his boxing career in a normal, down-to-earth way and we got to ask him questions. We all just connected with him, he was very easy to talk to and yet we left feeling very inspired by him as a person.” Richmond Borough’s initiative has won it acclaim from government and a PDM Conference National Award. For Wayne Simon, the programme has been successful in what he refers to as “overwriting children’s own sets of principles” and breaking the cycle of behaviour. In plain terms, Richmond Borough has seen a marked reduction in exclusion (only two pupils out of the 105 SETS attendees ended up at the pupil referral unit). Teachers have reported a significant improvement in attitudes and behaviour and, finally, the teenagers have come away armed with leadership diplomas and coaching certificates: the ARA Wetskills Level 1; RFU Coaching; Level 1; the FA Coaching Award. Oh – and a few rounds in the ring with Joe Calzaghe into the bargain.

Josh Warrington returns to the spotlight after boxing’s bleak spell | Boxing

The lockdown which brought British boxing to another shuddering halt ends on Saturday night when Josh Warrington headlines the sport’s first promotion in the country since 19 December. It has been a long and depressing break and boxing returns looking even more bruised than before. The bleak news surrounding the fight game has rumbled on since the BBC’s recent Panorama investigation into the continuing involvement of Daniel Kinahan in boxing.

Kinahan’s list of alleged criminal activities are disturbing but, unless he is convicted in a court of law, he has made it clear that he will continue advising fighters and setting up lucrative bouts from his exile in Dubai. Boxing administrators have admitted they are powerless to intervene while Sky and BT Sport, who screen most promotions in this country, squirm in the shadows as they wait to see whether the stories dry up for a while to ease their collective conscience.

At least our attention can shift briefly to Warrington as he makes his own return to the ring 16 months since his last fight. Warrington is an admirable boxer who is striving to establish himself as the best featherweight in the world. But even here there is chaos and disappointment. Warrington has relinquished his IBF world title and chosen to fight Mauricio Lara, an obscure Mexican, behind closed doors at Wembley Arena.

Warrington, who is a folk hero in Leeds, has the most vociferous fan base in the country. Last May he was scheduled to face Xu Can, the relentless WBA world champion, in a unification battle at a sold-out Headingley. But the first lockdown ruined those hopes. The fight was rescheduled for November, behind closed doors, before a second postponement was complicated still further when the IBF put pressure on Warrington to defend his title against his British rival Kid Galahad.

As the mandatory challenger, and having been unlucky not to get the decision against Warrington in June 2019, Galahad had accepted financial compensation to step aside last year. He was willing for Warrington to fight Xu on the understanding that he would meet the winner. Galahad has a legitimate claim that he deserves more than anyone to fight Warrington next and he is no longer willing to wait. But he is an awkward operator between the ropes, as Warrington found in the closest fight of his unbeaten 31-bout career, and he also lacks a name that resonates in world boxing.

Warrington, who turned 30 in November, is desperate to fight Xu and Gary Russell, the WBC champion, in bouts which would generate far more money and attention than another slippery scrap against Galahad. So Warrington chose to give up his world title and pursue the bigger fights which his promoter Eddie Hearn has promised to secure him.

Josh Warrington (right) lands a punch on Carl Frampton during their epic contest. Photograph: Martin Rickett/PA

There must have been some pain in this decision for it took him nearly nine years to win the title. Warrington had to follow a long and lonely path, fighting in small halls, before he was finally given a crack at the IBF title. He outpointed Lee Selby comprehensively to become a world champion in May 2018.

Seven months later, on his finest night in the ring, Warrington retained the title with a brilliant display against the much more favoured Carl Frampton. His last fight, after that fortunate win over Galahad, was in October 2019 when he knocked out Sofiane Takoucht.

Lara, meanwhile, has won 21 of his 23 bouts against a string of little-known Mexican opponents. He has more stoppage wins than Warrington but, in May 2018, Lara was knocked out by another Mexican, Eliot Chavez, with a modest 5-1-1 record.

There is always the chance in boxing that an apparent no-hoper produces a stunning surprise. Lara will cling to that slim prospect and he might bring huge commitment and desire into the ring.

Warrington, in contrast, will miss his raucous supporters and he could find it difficult to motivate himself when he is far more interested in fighting Xu and Russell. But it will be a shock if Warrington does not win in decisive style despite the lack of atmosphere in an empty arena. Boxing for Freedom in Thailand

In Thai prisons, some prisoners are earning their freedom through boxing. Liz Waid and Ryan Geertsma look at why the Thai government is encouraging this sport.

Welcome to Spotlight. I’m Liz Waid.

There is an ancient story told in Thailand. It happened in the 1700s. The story is set in the kingdom of Burma, which is now the country of Myanmar. At that time, Burma had defeated Thailand in a war. There were many Thai prisoners in Burma. The king of Burma decided to have a celebration. One event was a boxing competition. The king and other people watched. Burmese fighters fought against the Thai prisoners. There was one Thai fighter who beat everyone else. He even beat the best boxing teacher in Burma. His name was Nai Khanomtom. The King of Burma had a high opinion of Nai Khanomtom. He gave Khanomtom a very good prize. The king released him from prison. Khanomtom was free to move back to Thailand.

Voice 2

Today, a similar thing is happening in Thailand. Siriporn Thaveesuk went to prison when she was only 17. Soon, she joined a boxing program. Three years later Thaveesuk won an international competition. And, like Nai Khanomtom, she won her freedom from prison.

Voice 1

Thaveesuk is one of many prisoners in Thailand who are training to be boxers. If they win, they will be closer to freedom. Today’s Spotlight is on Thai prisoners who improve their lives and gain their freedom through boxing.

Voice 2

Thai boxing is also called Muay Thai. Two Muay Thai fighters stand together in a square shaped fighting area. They wear short trousers but no shirts. Each of their hands and wrists are tightly wrapped with white rope. When the fight begins the fighters use their hands, elbows, knees and feet to hit each other. People cheer for the fighters. Muay Thai is a popular form of entertainment in Thailand.

Voice 1

Prisons in Thailand are using this form of entertainment for a new purpose. The Thai government began a program for boxing in prisons. Prisoners all around the country compete in Muay Thai fights. This provides entertainment but it also gives the prisoners something to do.

Voice 2

Muay Thai is a very difficult sport. Fighters must be very strong. They must live a very healthy life. They spend many hours training their bodies. They also train their minds. They spend hours meditating and breathing. This training is helpful for prisoners. It is healthier than other activities such as smoking cigarettes or taking illegal drugs. Aree Chaloisuk is the director of Klong Pai prison. He tells Hemispheres magazine about the advantages of the program for the prisoners:

Voice 3

“Muay Thai is a strong part of Thai culture. I think the fighters are proud to take part in the program. From what I have seen, it can improve bad behaviour. It provides a chance for a job for prisoners after they leave prison. They can compete instead of becoming criminals again.”

Prisoners also train and fight for another reason. If they win their fights, they can reduce the time they have to stay in prison. Like in the story of Nai Khanomtom, prisoners can win their freedom through Muay Thai. One man working to do this is Chalernpol Sawangsuk. He is 26 years old. He is in prison for selling illegal drugs. But since he started practicing Muay Thai in prison, his life is different. Sawangsuk told Hemispheres magazine:

Voice 4

“It was a big change to my life. I think the program has helped me to concentrate. I have slowed down. I think about things more. I am more reasonable. I have seen myself grow up. The other life, I think it is really behind me.”

Voice 2

Sawangsuk has won five fights. Through these, he has reduced his prison time by seven years. There are other prisoners who have been completely set free from prison. One of these is Amnat Ruenroeng. He is now on Thailand’s Olympic boxing team. Winning a place on the national boxing team is a dream for all of the fighters. It is a great chance to bring honor to their country.

Voice 1

An organization called Prison Fight works with the Muay Thai prison program. Their aim was to help prisoners reduce prison time. Today, they help by providing equipment to the Thai prisoners. Prison Fight also organizes local and international events with the Thai government. They believe it is also a good way to share Thai culture. So prisoners in Thailand sometimes fight people from other countries. One international Prison Fight event took place in January 2013. Thai prisoners fought against fighters from France, Myanmar, and other countries. The event was a great success. Saichon Somnet is the head coach at Klong Prem prison. He talks in a video about the event:

Voice 5

“Today makes me happy and gives me a chance to share Muay Thai with people outside our country. It is very difficult for prisoners to get this kind of chance. I am very happy it is happening today.”

Voice 2

There are good results for the rest of Thai society too. The Thai government says that none of the released boxers have ever been arrested for another crime. They hope that Muay Thai keeps people from doing illegal activities. It also gives prisoners new skills and chances for the future. Wanchai Roujanavong is the director general of Thailand’s Department of Corrections. He told TIME magazine:

Voice 6

“People in prison have a lot of time. It is a good environment for dedicating yourself to boxing. The sport also provides new chances after prison. A lot of people have a difficult time finding jobs after they are released. But in boxing, no one cares about your history.”

Voice 1

Some prisoners have even found that fighting gives them new hope. It even helps them fix past mistakes. A boxer named Black Lion has fought in many Muay Thai fights in prison. He tells TIME magazine that he hopes to improve himself and his relationships. Black Lion voices the hope of many prisoners:

Voice 7

“I have made my mother sad for so long. I only finished first grade. I took drugs. Maybe with boxing and good concentration, I can fix myself and make my mother proud.”

“Century”: Alexander, tell us about the brightest impression of your childhood.

– As a child, I was very fond of sweets. “Little Red Riding Hood”, “Clubfoot Bear”.At first, the parents pampered, and then, when he began to seriously engage in sports, he had to give up sweets.

“Century”: In general, are you a sweet tooth?

– I like buns with apples and pears very much. Mom still makes them, but I don’t eat baked goods often. From time to time I allow, of course, but from them you quickly gain excess weight. And I, as an athlete, do not need it.

“Vek”: When you come to your native Kursk, what do you do?

– I communicate with my wife and daughter. I am resting with them … I am restoring my strength. After all, I do not visit my homeland often – all the time at training camps or trainings. And then in Kursk I have a lot of friends, the guys with whom I grew up and studied. We still meet, we spend time, we also go to the sea to relax. In general, I love to swim very much, but not very much to sunbathe. The sunburn is bad for me …

“Age”: And where did you meet your wife?

– Just with friends. It seems to be on someone’s birthday. She attracted me with her uniqueness. Somehow stood out among other girls.I noticed this and then proposed to her.

“Century”: What is more romantic for you – candlelight dinner or songs by the fire?

– I choose songs by the fire. It’s closer to me, more understandable. In general, I love music. Different styles and genres. I can listen to Katya Lel and chanson. In this sense, I am a patriot.

“Century”: What is spiritual comfort for you?

– Mental comfort – to live in Russia. I really love my country, its nature. Summer in Russia is a great time when you can go to the river, run through the dew in the morning.I can enjoy simple, natural things, experience spiritual harmony from this.

“Century”: You also love extreme sports …

– There is a little. With comrades, we jump with a parachute, we ride on motorcycles, sometimes up to 254 km / h. accelerated. I love speed very much. I also try to drive the car myself. I increase adrenaline by switching attention from boxing to other sports. Very helpful!

“Century”: Every year you become a popular, recognizable person. Boys with gleam in their eyes take your autographs, but you don’t have a star fever. Why do you think?

– It seems to me that being open, not “starry” is a property of a Russian guy. Look at Nikolai Valuev – with his titles, he is still very easy to communicate and there is no distance. I think he will remain so. And I am a completely ordinary person, an athlete who sets goals and achieves them. Anyone who wants to achieve something can do this. A real “star” is because it is real, that it is simple both in everyday life and in life.

“Century”: Tell us about your relationship with your brother Vladimir.

– Now we are very friendly. And in childhood they fought often, were mischievous boys. Everything changes with age. I think it’s very good when your brother is around. I can share everything with him, discuss something. And although we have different tastes, and outwardly we are not very similar – we are one with him.

“Century”: And did you go to discos in your youth together?

– Of course, we went in a big noisy company. Only in dancing we are not strong. Usually we watched others dance and girls also chose different ones. Our tastes are diametrically opposite.

“Century”: How much do you assess the prospects of your brother as a boxer?

– Time will tell. If he starts boxing as before, then everything will be fine. I believe in him. Volodya has potential, strength and perseverance.

“Century”: You have to travel often. Germany, USA … Do you have any impressions from visiting other countries?

– To be honest, as soon as I arrive abroad, I already want to go back home. There I am preparing for the fight and the fight itself.I don’t even have time to see something, to see. This is the case for any athlete. We have no time for museums at competitions. And I don’t like to go shopping either abroad or here.

“Century”: What, don’t you like to dress fashionably?

– The main thing is to be comfortable.

Vek: And if you are offered to become the face of some fashionable brand of menswear?

– I don’t like being the center of attention at all. And this popularity is not mine. In this sense, I am a humble guy. But if they really ask and I like the clothes, why not.

“Century”: Do you go to the movies?

– Of course I go! True, rarely. I love watching animated films. Shrek, for example. I am glad that good projects have begun to be made in Russia as well. I liked our “Alyosha Popovich and Tugarin Serpent” very much. Instructive good cartoons, we need more such films so that young people look up to the good, so that there is less bad on the screen.

“Century”: You have four – five fights a year, don’t you get tired of this rhythm?

– I don’t get tired of battles, I get tired of preparing for them.Exhausts more precisely this.

“Century”: Who would you like to box with?

– I don’t care. The main thing, of course, is to try to win the title of world champion and raise the prestige of professional boxing in Russia. So that our guys do not go abroad, but study and earn the same money here.

“Century”: Do you have any special talisman gloves?

– No, there is nothing like that. I do not believe in fortune telling or in horoscopes. I’ll have 13 fights soon, so I don’t even think about this number.Journalists just ask all the time.

The editorial staff of the Vek newspaper would like to thank Trubnikova’s Agency for their help in preparing this interview.

Ukrainian boxer Usik defeated Briton Joshua by unanimous decision

“Joshua needs a rival who stands”

Former IBF and IBO World Junior Welterweight Champion Eduard Troyanovsky noted that Usyk was much more dynamic.Joshua, in his opinion, would have had a chance of success if the opponent had been slower.

“The impressions are very positive. The whole world was waiting for this battle. Before the fight I said that there will be 12 rounds and Usyk will win on points – and that is what happened. Anthony could do nothing against a moving and technical boxer. The tendril was better, and Joshua could not oppose anything to him.

Anthony needs an opponent who stands or walks – a less mobile target to hit. And here he was in confusion: he seemed to be hitting, but all the blows were in the air, into the “milk”.He was discouraged and could not find the keys to his opponent.

Alexander did a lot to win, he brought it out practically in one wicket. But what Anthony was waiting for, I still did not understand.Maybe he didn’t want to risk it. But losing the battle and not doing anything is a question for me, ”Troyanovsky said.

“I thought Joshua was a favorite – I’m glad I was wrong”

Two-time Olympic boxing champion Alexei Tishchenko admitted that he was confident in the victory of the Briton. But the final outcome of the battle made Tishchenko rejoice that he was mistaken in his forecast.

“I really enjoyed the fight. A very good and beautiful fight in terms of boxing aesthetics. I said that I would be rooting for Alexander, but I thought Joshua was the favorite, I thought he would win on points. But in the end I was wrong, and I can only rejoice. Usyk showed his best qualities and took four championship belts, he is just handsome, ”Tishchenko said.

Former interim World Boxing Association (WBA) first heavyweight champion Valery Brudov was brief. He stated that Usyk won the victory, using his advantages to the maximum.

“I am sincerely happy for Alexander. Thanks to his skill and physical capabilities, he used all his best qualities, ”stated Brudov.

Konstantin Tszyu, the former absolute world champion in WBC, WBA and IBF versions, spoke even more succinctly. He noticed that he was satisfied with the outcome of the fight.

“In English, my feelings are satisfaction. I am satisfied with what happened, “Tszyu summed up.

“If the judges had given the victory to Joshua, they would have defamed themselves”

September 26 01:36 AM

Eduard Troyanovsky noted that the English judges could be tempted to help their compatriot and did what they could for him – the gong sounded a few seconds before the end of the 12th round. But if they had given the victory to Joshua, a scandal would have erupted, Troyanovsky is sure.

“Joshua took literally two or three rounds. Even a few seconds were removed from the last round, the gong sounded faster – the judges took advantage of this opportunity on their territory. But if they gave up the victory to Joshua, they would defame themselves.

Usyk is really cool, it’s a story. And if he has ambitions to move on, he has a lot of cool fights planned, ”concluded Edward.

According to Alexei Tishchenko, Usik did not leave the judges with a choice with his performance. And the fact that he won by unanimous decision confirms that he was better than his opponent in all respects.

“Boxing is a very subjective sport. We understand that it is not easy to win on the opponent’s territory. But Alexander came and was able not only to win, but to win on points. To do this, you need to be not only stronger than your opponent, but a head taller than him. So here you can only take off your hat, there are no other words, ”Tishchenko said.

Valery Brudov expressed solidarity with this opinion. He noted that the decision of the judges was fair.

“I think that the judges who were invited gave the fight to Alexander justly. His actions were enough to convince the judges of his victory, ”summed up Brudov.

Alexander Usik defeated Joshua in a 12-round duel that took place on the night of September 26 at the stadium of the Tottenham Football Club in London. Usyk won by unanimous decision – 117-112, 116-112, 115-113, becoming the holder of the title of the combined world champion in WBA Super, WBO, IBF and IBO heavyweight titles.

Ukrainian boxer remains undefeated. In the professional ring, he fought 19 fights and won each of them, while 13 times he knocked out his opponent. For Joshua, this defeat was the second with 24 wins, of which 22 he won ahead of schedule.

The current world champion in light heavyweight boxing according to the versions of the World Boxing Council (WBC) and the International Boxing Federation (IBF) Artur Beterbiev spoke about the upcoming fight between Ukrainian Alexander Usik and Briton Anthony Joshua.

There will be no denouement in the first rounds. They will be careful, “REN TV quotes the boxer .

Let us remind you that the battle will take place in London on the night of September 25-26.

90,000 Karasev – in the spotlight: justly removed Bonucci, did not fall for the pantomime from Verratti – On the spirit of the times – Blogs

Completed the League of Nations semifinals. How do you like it?

Sergei Karasev was assigned to one of the main break matches for the national teams – the semifinals of the League of Nations between Italy and Spain in Milan. From the outset, the Italians have contested almost every whistle of the Russian referee – but two of the highlights came with captain Leonardo Bonucci.

In the 30th minute, the Italians played a free kick at the enemy’s goal, but Nicolo Barella trampled on the 17-year-old debutant Gavi. Bonucci was extremely unhappy that the ref had fixed a foul – and rushed to him with claims.

For this, the captain of the Italian national team received a yellow one – Karasev did not tolerate disputes. Already 11 minutes later, Bonucci fought with Sergi Busquets for the ball hanging in the air near his own penalty area – and flew his elbow into the head of the captain of the Spanish national team.

Karasev confidently reached for the card – perhaps he realized that it would become the second for Bonucci only when he was surrounded by Italians led by peacekeeper Marco Verratti.

But it was already too late: Karasev pointed to his elbow and pulled out a yellow card from his pocket. The pantomime of the Italians was beautiful.

Verratti, who did not immediately understand that the yellow one would fly to the captain, in a friendly way tried to convince the judge that he did not need to take out the card.

Bonucci assured with all his appearance that nothing had happened.

Marco urged everyone to calm down and think carefully about the decision.

Karasev showed his elbow in response, and Bonucci, who got up and went to the judge, already understood what awaited him now, and tried to gently explain to the judge what happened by chance, he did not want to.

It seemed that the ref even at some point pointed at the earpiece, hinting that you can also look at the straight red one – so the yellow one will be for sure.

Then, just in case, he went to see Busquets, who was showing with every kind that he was in pain. And then he showed red. And even after the removal, Jorginho explained why he gave the card.

Leo himself also tried to explain himself. The Russian judge is adamant – you can show your elbow one more time.

By the way, Bonucci was the only player who got a warning from Karasev until the last minute of the half. After that, Azpilicueta received the card. It turns out that he kept a sufficient level of clearance, but Bonucci very stupidly got two yellows.

Look at everything in dynamics – no questions to Karasev.

Karasev works very confidently in the semifinals of the League of Nations 💪

First, he besieged Bonucci for talking, and then sent Leonardo to rest ➡️

Did you do everything right? 🤔

– Match TV (@MatchTV) October 6, 2021

Italians, however, still disagree. “I think the sending off was too harsh,” said Federico Chiesa after the match. – I have never seen such a meaningless yellow card for disagreement at the national team level. He (Bonucci) was the captain, there was a clear mistake by the referee, because the Spaniard just slipped, so the captain had the right to ask. I have never seen two such yellows at this level. ”

Bonucci became only the second player with red in the history of matches between Spain and Italy. The first is Spanish keeper Ricardo Zamora, who retired for the 1920 Olympics. Yes, that was 101 years ago.

And Karasev added one more status match to his asset.

Boxing and MMA: Sports:

On Monday, June 7 in Miami, the former world boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. and YouTube star Logan Paul finally met in the ring. The fight was an exhibition, so it was possible to win it only ahead of schedule. Everyone expected a knockout from Mayweather, but Paul survived all eight rounds. Did Floyd give in? For him, the result of the battle did not seem to matter. The show attracted a lot of attention, with broadcast sales breaking all records. The richest athlete of the decade just got richer. Who and why needed this fight, what preceded it and why the legendary boxer could not cope with the blogger – in the material of “Lenta.RU”.

Mayweather and Paul were supposed to meet in the ring on February 20, but a pandemic prevented. The appointment of a new date for the fight was delayed for more than a month, which caused a fair amount of irritation among the fans. However, the postponement was only beneficial – it was possible to warm up the interest in the event as much as possible. Not only the organizers and sponsors worked on this, but also the participants themselves.

It was not a big deal for the latter. The undefeated Mayweather (with a professional record of 50-0) was always in the spotlight, and Paul was helped by a growing audience on YouTube every day.Now his channel has 23 million subscribers. Although the American shoots videos not only on sports or sports topics, they perceive him precisely as a boxer.

For Paul, this fight is the second according to boxing rules. In 2019, he lost to another blogger, Briton Olajid Olatunji, known as KSI, by a split decision. The rivals have already agreed on a revenge: pop-boxing turned out to be extremely popular among the fans.

At the same time, Logan’s younger brother Jake is a little better known as an athlete. He is also a blogger, but in the ring he has already hit, for example, former Bellator champion Ben Asken. In addition, Jake challenged Conor McGregor and has been harshly hitting him several times on social media. Paul’s fight with Asken turned out to be very monetary, so the Irishman is unlikely to miss such a chance. Only with professional boxers Jake has not yet met, but he has already announced that he intends to become the world champion

Logan has never spoken about such a desire. But, apparently, he intends to stay in boxing for a long time and beat the stars for the sake of earning money and increasing popularity.

Of course, before meeting with Floyd, Paul told and showed that he was preparing and training. He reacted approvingly to the postponement of the fight, saying that every day the hall is getting better by a couple of percent, while Mayweather continues to age. “I’m going to knock him out and become the greatest boxer on the planet. Then I’ll retire and not give Floyd any revenge. He does not know with whom he is entering the ring. He really thinks I’m just a YouTuber. He really thinks I’m a fake fighter.I think that underestimation will hurt Floyd, ”said Logan.

Floyd Mayweather

Photo: @floydmayweather

Floyd immediately reacted: “They call me Money for a reason. I have worked hard for many years to reach a certain level. The level at which any fight of mine is a big event. Now I am an advocate of smart, not hard work. Fighting Paul is a very easy task, like a legal bank robbery, so I couldn’t refuse it. I have to do it and I will do it. “

He reasoned in approximately the same way in 2018, when in 140 seconds of an exhibition duel against the Japanese Tenshin Nasukawa he earned nine million dollars. Or a year earlier, before his last professional fight, when he faced Irish mixed style (MMA) fighter Conor McGregor and in 36 minutes received a record 275 million for the sport. In general, such logic is inherent in Mayweather.

In preparation, the American showed nothing special. He himself admitted that he did not even train every day.“I’m going out against a blogger. It’s enough for me, ”he reminded.

It doesn’t matter if I had an intensive camp or not. Damn it, this guy has no chance. It doesn’t matter where I train, because the bottom line will always be the same. I cannot be beaten. I’m Floyd. I earn the most because I kick asses and beat the biggest names in boxing

Floyd Mayweather

From the very beginning, it seemed interesting that 26-year-old Paul is 15 centimeters taller than his 44-year-old opponent. And at the weigh-in, it turned out that he was also heavier by 15 kilograms. The scales under him showed 85.9 kilograms, and under Mayweather – 70.3 (the American has never exceeded the first average weight limit in his career). The boxer has never had a larger opponent than Paul. And although Floyd’s superiority in the class is not even worth discussing, the strong Logan could still count on the lacquer punch in such conditions.

Partly because of such a big difference in the size of the participants, the organizers refused to give the fight an official status and to nominate side judges. This also meant that in the event that the fight did not end with a legal knockout, no winner would be announced.

Nevertheless, all this did not affect the interest from the fans at all. Long before the fight, it was reported that Showtime, the owner of the broadcasting rights, hoped to receive at least $ 200 million from the sale of the broadcast. These numbers weren’t a hoot: the preliminary PPV revenue was breaking records even before the fight was rescheduled. And then the opportunity to watch the fight was estimated at $ 20, and the current price tag was $ 49.99 at once.

By the way, according to the initial agreement, half of this income should go to Mayweather’s pocket. Plus a guaranteed royalty of ten million dollars. “I’m done with boxing, but I’m not done making money,” confirmed the richest athlete of the decade, according to Forbes. Paul will receive only ten percent of the channel’s proceeds and $ 250,000 from above.

Shortly before the fight, the participants agreed that they would box in 10-ounce gloves, not 12-ounce gloves. This was probably done to increase the likelihood of a knockout and the appearance of at least some intrigue.

The announcement of the fight caused an ambiguous reaction – but otherwise such events rarely happen. So, world champion Saul Alvarez attacked Mayweather and Paul with criticism, calling the fight a manifestation of disrespect for boxing and boxers. “You know, it’s only about money. I don’t think we will agree that basketball players, youtubers should get boxing licenses. This is a very risky sport, ”said the athlete.

Paul, however, did not remain in debt and reminded Canelo of his doping history. “The guy who has been caught twice on steroids will talk about what respect is in boxing? Fuck it! He himself does not respect sports and spits on the ethics of boxing. I think this is all due to the fact that he lost to Mayweather, and I have a chance to beat him, ”the blogger said.

Agreed with Alvarez and promoter Eddie Hearn. He expressed concern that fighting shows are more popular with fans than actual fights. “What is the intrigue in the duel between Mayweather and Paul? One of the greatest boxers of all time and a video blogger, who had only one fight in the professional ring, will meet in the ring, ”he said.

Former world champion Timothy Bradley said that he himself will never be in Mayweather’s place. “He is being used as a prostitute. The dude has a record of 0-1 and he’s fighting, come on. This is an easy job for Floyd. They knew that sooner or later they would take it into circulation, and they took it. I’m sorry, ”said the boxer.

Ukrainian heavyweight Oleksandr Usyk, on the contrary, thought it was “great to make money this way”. “I think it’s just business. Mayweather made a name for himself, he reached the pinnacle of his career. Now everyone wants to box with the champions. Nobody wants to fight a random guy from the street. It will bring them a lot of money, so why not? ” – added the boxer.

Another fan of the show, former undisputed world champion Mike Tyson, also made his prediction for the fight.“Floyd is going to kick Logan’s ass. But it won’t be easy anyway. Logan is about to fight back. Maybe Floyd will let Logan hit him a couple of times to make the show look good. There is always danger when two men enter the ring. Anything can happen, ”said the American. He added that Floyd, despite leaving professional boxing, continues to sweat in the gym, so he should not be underestimated.

Although during training the athletes occasionally exchanged barbs, they did not demonstrate anything out of the ordinary. The culmination of the pre-match warm-up was a press conference, which ended in a massive brawl. During the duel of gazes, both participants looked extremely tense, and after a verbal skirmish, Paul tore off Floyd’s baseball cap and ran away. This was the reason for the fight, in which representatives of both teams took part. Then they started talking: Mayweather and Paul will definitely destroy each other.

More precisely, there was no particular doubt about the fact that Mayweather would deal with Paul in a couple of minutes. And how amazing was the blogger’s resilience, who survived all eight rounds! However, Floyd, although he looked fresh, gave himself a hit, and he himself did not hit too violently. In addition, it was Paul who threw out twice as many punches (217, of which 28 were accurate, versus 107 in total and Mayweather’s 43 accurate)

Floyd was the master in the fight and was in no hurry at all. During the first two rounds, he kept an eye on his opponent. Paul, from the very beginning, began to work with a jab and tried to put pressure. At first, the former world champion deftly suppressed these attempts, and at the end of the segment, apparently in order to entertain both himself and the public, he completely gave the initiative to Logan. The blogger seemed to believe and unleashed a series of blows at Floyd. The hall roared.

Mayweather joined only in the third round and then only half. However, more was not required of him: Paul was still trying to use the dimensions and throwing jabs, but the marriage of technology and lack of experience gave him too much. By the middle of the battle, Logan felt very hard.Floyd was increasingly forced to clinch, and the blogger at close range was completely helpless. Mayweather, on the other hand, easily dodged in a tough fight and constantly found moments to strike.

Floyd also hit from long distance, although less often than he clearly could – and this despite the fact that in the last two rounds he was already very exhausted Paul picked up the pace. He did not forget about the rules of the game and invited the opponent to attack.Mayweather had the opportunity to finish off Logan in this segment, but he did not show much desire. At the end of 24 minutes, the ring-announcer thanked the participants for the opposition. Mayweather smiled smugly, and Paul’s tired face showed no emotion at all – neither joy nor particular sadness.

At the same time, according to Jake Paul, if the referee was in place, Logan would be recognized as the winner. “50-1. My brother just beat Floyd Mayweather, ”he snapped. Logan himself did not talk about the result of the fight. All he noticed was that this fight was the greatest moment of his life. “I never want to hear from anyone again that there is something impossible. The fact that I’m here with one of the greatest boxers of all time … It was a great honor for me to share the ring with him. This is the coolest thing in the world. It is very difficult to hit it, ”the blogger said.

Floyd in the comments also avoided demands to consider him the winner, once again proving that he never cared about the outcome of the battle. Perhaps the defeat would have been unpleasant for him, but the victory was not particularly necessary.“He’s better than I thought of him. He is a tough contender. Good action, I had fun. I was surprised by him. Oh yes, I had fun. I have been doing this sport for 25 years. I understand that I am not 21, but tonight I had fun, ”said the former world champion.

What’s next? Paul will start looking for a new rival. So does Mayweather, who seems determined to continue to mock the industry and capitalize on the interest of freak fighting fans. Although someone considered the fight with the blogger a shame for Floyd, it is unlikely that the next time there will be fewer people who want to see his release. Will he go up against Jake Paul now? Or will there be a rematch with McGregor, which Floyd mentioned a couple of months ago? “Why not? He is an easy contender for me. Even if I earn $ 50 million, it is very good for a pensioner, ”he said. True, it seems, in fact, the appetite of the legendary American is by no means limited to such a modest amount.
