Airline passengers spent more on bags and other fees during COVID-ravaged 2020

Passengers are paying more to check bags and bolstering airline revenue with other spending outside the cost of tickets, even though the COVID-19 pandemic massively cut into air travel during the past 18 months.

With ticket prices dropping to historic lows in 2020, Fort Worth-based American Airlines managed to get nearly $40 out of the average customer in bag fees, priority boarding, lounge usage and credit card programs, according to the CarTrawler Yearbook of Ancillary Revenue by IdeaWorksCompany. That’s 15% more than in 2019, a relatively normal year for flying.

Dallas-based Southwest Airlines brought in $46.63 from the average passenger, nearly 40% more than 2019, according to IdeaWorksCompany’s data.

Still, those ancillary fees brought in less total revenue for airlines than in non-COVID years because the number of passengers was way down. Ancillary fees dropped by more than 40% at both American and Southwest, along with other major airlines such as United and Delta. Even low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines, which thrived on leisure travelers and low fares in 2019, saw a 33% total drop.

At American, that was a loss of more than $3.7 billion in revenue.

But in a year when airlines struggled to stay afloat financially, IdeaWorksCompany founder Jay Sorensen was surprised that carriers didn’t do more to get customers to upgrade seats, check extra bags or board flights earlier.

“There was so much focus on airfares that no one really did anything different with fees,” Sorensen said. “It might have been a missed opportunity for discounts.”

For the past 18 months, airlines have been dealing with a wonky world in which previous passenger flying patterns provided little clarity on how upcoming months might play out. Travel numbers are still largely shaped by rapidly changing government restrictions in reaction to unpredictable surges in COVID-19 cases.

Only in recent weeks have airlines begun reducing fall schedules, even after complaints of overcrowded airplanes and staff shortages in the summer.

Southwest Airlines president Tom Nealon retires only months after being passed over for CEO job

Southwest Airlines President Tom Nealon will retire from the carrier immediately, the company announced Monday, three months after being passed over for the carrier’s CEO job. Nealon, 60, has been at Dallas-based Southwest Airlines for 10 years and had leadership stints at prominent companies based in North Texas such as J.C. Penney and Frito-Lay. In June Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly announced that he was retiring in early 2022 and picked long-time executive Bob Jordan to take his place. Nealon was an obvious candidate as a successor to the CEO position but didn’t get the job. Nealon will stay on at Southwest as a “strategic advisor,” the company said.

Still, ancillary fees and credit cards were a bright spot for airlines in an otherwise dismal 2020, when the financial livelihood of the industry was threatened and U.S. airlines totaled more than $35 billion in losses. American Airlines turned to shipping cargo, furloughs and layoffs to cut costs. Even with looser spending by some passengers, American lost $8.9 billion despite nearly $6 billion in government grants to help cover employee payrolls.

Even though baggage fees didn’t go up at airlines, American Airlines passengers spent more than ever to check bags, about $10.15 per person, according to federal bag fee data. Even Southwest, which doesn’t charge for the first two checked bags, made more money per passenger from bag fees.

Credit card revenue emerged as a pandemic win for airlines because consumer spending remained hot, even when travel was subdued, Sorensen said. That means customers will have pent-up credit card airline miles on hand, which will turn into revenue when passengers book tickets, he said.

“It’s a delicate balance, though, because the airline industry would have loved to have you redeem those airline miles in 2020 and early 2021 when there were far more empty seats and they were hurting for revenue,” he said.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova’s interview – about the US Open final, breakthrough in 2021, injuries, tattoos and working with her brother

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova made a real breakthrough in 2021: she reached the first final of Slam, won Olympic gold and returned the title of the first racket of Russia. In an exclusive interview with Eurosport.ru, she talked about improving the game, the US Open finals, injuries and tattoos.

– How long have you been unable to sleep after the US Open finals?

– I was so tired. I thought I’d come home and sit back right away, but it turned out about the same as when I play a very late match. It is usually very difficult for me with this, it is problematic to fall asleep. This time, because of emotions, I also could not, I relived this moment again, replayed some rallies, was still a little in the match. This is an incredible event for Russian tennis.

Roland Garros

Pavlyuchenkova: “Because of the Roland Garros knee I played on pills”

09/17/2021 At 15:51

– Before the final you said that you expect an exciting match. Did you meet your expectations?

– Not really, because the intensity of passions, five sets, 6: 4 in the decisive – this was not the case. Although this is the Grand Slam final, Djokovic with Medvedev, the first and second rackets of the world. The match was spectacular, wonderful tennis, but for me Dani had a clear advantage.

The best moments of the best final. How Medvedev defeated Djokovic

– There was a feeling that if Djokovic breaks at 5: 4 in the third, then Medvedev could have problems?

– The only moment when the thought crept in that Djokovic could turn the tide of the match was at the beginning of the second set – Novak took his serve quite easily and he had 0-40 on Dani’s serve. The score could have become 2: 0, and he would have served. Or 2: 1 and the game where he had a couple of break points.I think these were the key points. In principle, the only ones for Djokovic, where he could turn the course of the game in his direction.

– Did Djokovic’s tears move you?

– Actually yes. It does not matter at all whether I have sympathy for Novak or not. I never thought I’d say that I feel sorry for him. People probably think that athletes are spoiled for attention and financially. He won so many things – how can you feel sorry for him? But when you are at this level, when you are an athlete and you have a certain goal – and he had a goal, this historic “Helmet” is always like anew, like a new match. You forget about all your cups, about all your victories and defeats. You now have a match that you want to win. He was clearly at a loss, in a panic, he could not win. Therefore, in part, I felt pain for him.

– Could you repeat Medvedev’s words that Djokovic is the greatest?

– Yes, definitely. Andrei Rublev and I were asked a couple of days ago who we think is the greatest player in the history of tennis. Andrei immediately named Rafa. Then they began to give examples, study statistics, but in the end they came to the conclusion that all three of them are equally great. But I would even correct a little that, perhaps, Djokovic has now overtaken them according to the results. Honestly, I’ve always been a fan of Federer and Nadal, but now I somehow got into Djokovic. He’s been incredibly cool lately.

– Does Novak’s absence of Olympic gold make a difference?

– By the way, I also cited this as an example when we compared the results. Because Rafa has two golds – alone and in a pair, Federer – in a pair. And Djokovic has only bronze. But this is probably the only thing that you can cling to.This still does not negate the fact that he is a really cool and great tennis player.

I sincerely dislike grass. I will probably say this until I win Wimbledon

– Djokovic missed his dream. You have about the same situation when you did not win the Roland Garros. How worried at that moment?

– I had very mixed emotions. There was joy and relief, because I played six quarterfinals, I could not go further. It seemed that it was not destiny, that this would never happen, although from childhood I was told and told: “Why don’t you believe? You can be there. “I often beat the top 5 and said to myself: “Okay, this is the first final, this is a great result, and I cannot discount it. To say that she lost in the final means everything is bad. No way.

An unrealistically cool result, the match was very close, I could even win it. But then there was also resentment, and for a split second the thought crept in – what if this is my last ending, there will never be such a chance again. It wouldn’t be me if I didn’t think negatively. I have everything according to the classics – positive or negative is always present. Therefore, there were such mixed feelings.

How did you recover? She worked with sports psychologist Tanya Svidova. Conducting sessions, communicating – it also helped. Then I somehow switched to Wimbledon, although everyone told me: “Well, you’re sick!” Because after Roland Garros I flew to Eastbourne in five days. They joked, especially the guys, that after the final until the US Open they would not have played anything at all. But I am such a person, responsible even in this. Moreover, the appetite comes during the game. I believed in myself, the final gave motivation and strength, so I wanted to perform very well on the grass. And I believed that I could play at Wimbledon the same way. But again I understood that the grass … I can’t psychologically play on it, I don’t like it. This is partly why I flew earlier to Wimbledon to play some matches and trainings. Was like a squeezed lemon when I got there.

– You don’t like grass, at Roland Garros they said: “What am I doing on the ground? How I hate him. ” It was similar in Australia. What remains is the US Open.

– This is different. I sincerely dislike grass. I will probably say this until I win Wimbledon. As for Roland Garros and Australia: when I speak during matches, it’s pure emotion. In fact, I really love the ground. Perhaps this is my favorite coating. This year in Paris I showed one of my best tennis.

– You have a great season in general: the first final of Slam, the first appearance in the second week at the US Open in 10 years, Games gold, three laps at Wimbledon. Surprised by this breakthrough?

– There is no such thing as snow on the head, because I play, train, give my best. Everything is on the rise, because at the beginning of the clay series I played the semifinals in Madrid. Probably it all started from there. Then Roland Garros happened, and it gave me more motivation, strength and confidence. Plus ambitions, because the Masters semi-finals and the Paris finals – you want better and more. I believe I can.

– Something foreshadowed that Madrid would be the starting point?

– Definitely.I didn’t have a very good start in Australia, the grid was not very good for me (in the first round Pavlyuchenkova played with Osaka – Eurosport.ru). Then there was a blow to the head, because I trained in the preseason, we arrived in Australia – I sat in quarantine. I went a couple of laps in the tournament before the Australian Open, but the main focus was on it. And then there were minor problems with the knee, Dubai, Peter played unsuccessfully, where there was a very offensive defeat from Anastasia Hasanova 6: 7 in the third set, although I was leading.

Then a brother came to my team. After the match we sat, and I said: “Well, this is some kind of kick, really. I kind of train, I do everything, I want to, but it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out a little bit. ” And then he said: “You need to train and do it very hard – everything will be, everything will come. Trust us, we will do everything. ” Then a sports psychologist joined in, and I trained with such incredible frenzy before the clay series. I gave my best at 200% at each workout, hitting the ball with a frenzy. In training, I represented my every defeat this year. I told myself that I no longer want to play like this in the first or second round, I don’t want to play like that anymore, because it’s awful. I am not saying that it will never happen again – it will probably happen many more times. But at least for myself, the attitude with which I am going and how I am ready is important.

– Elena Vesnina said that the final of the Olympics is a colossal stress that she has never experienced. Is it the same for you too?

– All our matches were like this.Although for me personally there was no difference whether the foreigners were against us in the final or the Russians. It didn’t bother me at all. I wanted to win gold. Who I played against – it doesn’t matter. I didn’t even think about it, nothing has changed for me.

From the first round after each match our hands were literally shaking, all the games were unrealistically nervous. Therefore, I was absolutely ready for the final, for us it was already a normal state.

– Was it pleasant stress or don’t you want to experience this anymore?

– The match was very nervous and the stress was heavy.I don’t even know if it was harder or easier that we were alone with Andrey, because we were equally nervous. At the same time, it is very cool and, probably, will remain in the memory for as long as possible. Perhaps we will never experience such emotions and nerves again.

– How were you met after winning the Games?

– I was pleasantly surprised that a lot of people from the Balashikha sports club came to the airport. Children with posters “Nastya is great!” and photographs. Andrey and I made T-shirts with our photo and mugs – like a trifle, but very memorable. The next day I met with important people. I visited the SC “Balashikha”, where my dad works as a director and where the Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Cup was held two or three times. There were many children, a colorful mini-reception was organized. Was great.

Roland Garros I played on pills. I spent the whole tournament on painkillers, because my knee hurt very badly

– You and a psychologist recently started working. When did you realize that it was time for someone to dig in their brains?

– From April.I already had experience working with a psychologist before that – with the Frenchwoman Francis Dose, who has been helping Daniil Medvedev for a long time. I worked with her for a year in 2018. In principle, this is a very long period. But I think there is such a thin thread. We need a certain approach to each person. Chemistry is just as important as anything else. Her system of work was probably not very suitable for me. Or fit, but I myself was different. Three years ago I looked at things differently, perceived what was happening, and saw myself in tennis differently.Maybe, at some moments, I didn’t fully approach training, matches. Now I am more professional and disciplined in my approach to tournaments and preparation.

– Tarpishchev said that your breakthrough was due to the absence of injuries. At the same time, news of damage is often slipped through. When was the last time you felt completely healthy?

– Definitely not this year. Shamil Anvyarovich says this because he helped me – he found a Chinese popular in Moscow. He helped with the shoulder, with which I had a problem since the age of 19 and because of which I could not serve. But Shamil Anvyarovich forgets that my knee hurts for more than a year – sometimes better, sometimes worse. Unfortunately, this is again my lack of professionalism to the end, because in 2020 I did not take a sufficient pause and did not treat my knee properly. I take this responsibility upon myself, because only I can control it. Now I have plans for the end of the season to go to my physio in Spain and treat my knee, because if I don’t take a break, it will be so – sometimes better, sometimes worse.

Actually I played Roland Garros on pills.I spent the whole tournament on painkillers, because my knee hurt so badly. There is quite hard ground, plus when you slide, all the load goes to the knee. And there was such a critical moment in the match with Sobolenko, when by the third set I realized that I could not just land on my foot after serving. Then, after the second batch, I went with the doctors behind the court, and they taped my leg, because because of my knee, I already had a problem elsewhere in my leg.

If not for the physio, which Rybakina and I then shared and which glued me to the final, then, unfortunately … Then I even burst into tears.I remember I said to my brother when I beat Sobolenko: “I play so well, but it seems to me that I can’t stand the whole tournament”. Then I really felt very unpleasant and insulting, because I understood that I could go very far. I felt in shape, but …

By the way, after the semifinals in Madrid, I could not play Rome and Serbia, where I was the first seeded, because I broke my abs a little. But the most important thing is the knee, which does not go all the way through.

– Why don’t you take a longer pause to heal?

– After Peter I didn’t fly to America, I thought: “Okay, this is a great moment.I’ll take these four weeks, and I will have the opportunity to heal my knee just before the ground. ” Again, I feel pretty good. Now the most important tournaments, plus I want to play in Moscow. I’ll finish the season and after the last tournament I have just a plan to start treatment.

– How many games have you played with painkillers this season?

– I won’t name the number of matches, but the whole year, starting with Australia. Details: we were in quarantine for two weeks, but still trained for five hours, and because of the covid, we could not see physio. And this segment, which I spent two weeks without physio – the knee again became worse, although I arrived in a more or less normal form. Again hard, everything is tough. The only place where I had a normal knee was at Wimbledon. Because the grass was soft. At all other tournaments, I drank painkillers, and at some point it was already very harmful. Therefore, now I try to do without them as much as possible.

– You played painkillers with a damaged abs. It turns out that Djokovic was in vain hated in Australia when he won the title with allegedly torn abdominal muscles?

– Nobody knows until the end who has what. Specifically, with a torn press – it’s hard. I had a micro tear after Madrid: I drank painkillers and taped, went to warm up, tried to serve and it hurt me. Plus fear, because this is such an insidious place – if you strain, you can fly out for six months. But in general, it is real to perform with such an injury. I’ve been performing with a knee on painkillers – it helps. It just depends on the specific problem. There are some where pain relievers won’t help. But everything about playing on painkillers with tears and sprains is very serious.

– Tarpishchev believes that you are in the top 10 of the WTA in terms of play this season. Do you agree with him?

– Yes. For me, this is also a kind of goal this year, because I was 13th (the best rating is Eurosport.ru), but 10 years ago. Now it is also approximately 13-14th (after the US Open – 14th). I believe in it and think – why not.

– What do you need to improve in order to be in the top 10 and above?

– We definitely need stability, because we need to consistently show such seasons. At least like this year, or even better. Of course, I still have such a goal – I really want to take some title, because I won the last one three years ago in Strasbourg, this is quite a long time ago. And I want a relatively large one, because the largest I had in Moscow and Paris in 2014. You need to add in speed, stability, and endurance – a little everywhere. And the main thing is that I personally want to improve the serve.

– Feel like it’s real?

– Yes, of course.

My brother was always ashamed to take me somewhere, like it’s not cool with my younger sister. But he always protected, defended

– Working with my brother is one of the probable reasons for progress. Why didn’t you trust him earlier?

– We have already worked together. Not so bad times, but both were very young. He rode with me when I was 14 years old. Then I won almost everything in juniors. The second time, when Patrick Muratoglu and I finished our work. I was 18 years old, I trained in Barcelona for two years, and Sasha was with me. It was then that she entered the top 20 for the first time.

I trusted him, but he also had ambitions for himself to start playing again. I was very young. It seemed that he was not authoritative enough for me. Plus, when both were young, there were some kind of family graters. But I have never had such that I did not trust him or considered him an unworthy coach.

– Did you also help each other outside of tennis as a child?

– In fact, we didn’t spend much time together, because Sasha also played tennis. He left for Spain at IMG (Bollettieri Tennis Academy – Eurosport.ru) to Juan Carlos Ferrero. Therefore, we very rarely saw each other.

I was very young when he was in his teens. He was always embarrassed to take me somewhere, like it’s not cool with my younger sister. But always, like an older brother, he guarded me, defended me, and I always knew that. If anything – the older brother will come to the rescue, such a Superman.

– What is the first story that comes to mind if they ask: “But do you remember, you and your brother …”?

– When we came to the Australian Open, I was 14 years old. There was a children’s tournament of the first category, which I played. It is located in the Australian countryside. When we were going there, they scared us terribly, said: “Close all windows and doors, because spiders crawl right into the rooms under the bed. There are also poisonous ones, so look at the back – with yellow or with red. ” We were frightened all the time. Sasha and my mother were with me, and we decided to organize a cruel joke on my mother. There is the Crowne Plaza casino where we have always played: table hockey, various machines. Won the scary black furry spider. Mine was a moronic idea, I told my brother: “Let me distract my mother in the room, and you quickly put the spider under the blanket.”Mom’s lights were dim, because it’s evening, we came from supper. When she flung open the blanket, she saw a spider and fell off the bed. I was scared then, because she could have broken her leg.

This story came first, but we mostly have all sorts of jokes. The whole essence of our relationship: we make fun of, laugh. We have a kind of humor all the time. It also distracts me and helps me in tournaments, because I like to laugh.

– How did mom punish for such a joke?

– There was no punishment, because my mother is a saint, an angel. She is very kind. I was angry for a minute, but then everything was okay.

Tattoo emoticon is dedicated to one of the difficult periods that I went through. I wanted to remind myself to smile

– Love for tattoos from your brother?

– Partly because he’s an elder. Not that I imitated him, but I thought he was mega-cool. Since childhood, he was unrealistically non-standard, but with a sense of style and taste. We grew up in Samara, where there was nothing, we didn’t really know or see anything. And he was in Spain and traveled a lot since childhood, brought some things. He had piercings at the age of 14, got a tattoo early, and wore bandanas all the time. At first I noticed some things with him.

– If I followed the chronology correctly, you made the last tattoo with a skeleton and you already have 10-11 of them.

– No, not with a skeleton. And there are already more than 10 of them, but they are harmless. I call them that because they are small. By the way, my brother asks: “When are you going to beat your hand normally? What are you doing, these little guys? ” And he has all the sleeves.I answer: “Sash, I’m a girl, what are the sleeves?” He says: “Well, you will eventually get to the sleeve, because you have these little ones, like translators.” He calls them that, and I: “You don’t understand anything!”

I make them in different countries, they remind me of certain moments all the time. Skeleton was in Los Angeles in 2020, where I was doing preseason. There was also a funny little avocado, because I love avocado – almost no one sees it, it’s on the foot.

I did the penultimate one in Dubai in February, and the last one – “Meow” – on the back of the thigh.I got it in front of Roland Garros in Moscow.

– And then they wrote it on the camera.

– Yes. Then Barbara Shett told me at Eurosport, when I came to them with Mats: “Meow – what is it, you love cats? Do you dedicate the victory to your cats? ” I say, “I don’t even have cats, I don’t like them.”

– Imagine that after the first tattoo you will not be able to stop?

– I was warned. Everyone who has tattoos usually says so: “When you do the first one, then you are carried away.”The first was at the age of 18. Made it on the sly from my parents. In my opinion, I just went with my brother to Moscow. I stuffed seven stars on my right foot – a scattering, because I really liked Rihanna, and she just had one on the back of her neck. I really liked it – I just love the stars. Made seven for good luck.

– You said that tattoos are spontaneous and don’t matter.

– Of course not. There is no such thing that I go – and wow, I will.

– But at least once it probably happened.

– Zipper behind the ear. I was in London and went to pierce the tragus, and there they were doing tattoos. And I’m like, “Oh, why not?” I can and do so. In general, I am very spontaneous in life in everything.

– What’s the most important?

– Probably a smiley. I made it specifically on the wrist. Because I mostly do tattoos so that I don’t see them. I just know myself – when I have a lot of things, it gets worn down, gets boring and starts to annoy the eye somehow.I’m afraid I’ll look and think: “Damn, that’s why?” And so I don’t see any of my tattoos, except for this one. It is dedicated to one of the difficult periods that I went through. I made a smiley because I wanted to remind myself to smile. That life is good and everything is okay.

– Have a tattoo that you regret?

– Yes, and by the way, I’m thinking of deleting it. This third eye is the second tattoo I got when I was 19. It was not entirely my decision, just spontaneous.I came and I really wanted to get another tattoo. I myself did not understand what I wanted and how, but it was necessary. It turned out that they imposed it on me a little. I didn’t quite come to this on my own and not quite the design I wanted.

I look at tattoos and in general in life this way: any problem can be solved, just some take more time and effort. And the tattoo can generally be removed if you really want to.

– What taboos do you have in tattoos?

– I am against tattoos on the face.It is unlikely that I will do something on the hip and in other places to be clearly visible. I have them all like that, you can hide it.

I don’t understand when people say to me: “You’ll be old, and it will look kind of dumb”. Damn, when will it be 60 years old – what difference does it make if you have tattoos or not? When I was 60-70 years old, I have not seen a female model on the beach with such an awesome body that I could say: “Well, if she had no tattoos, it would be great.” What are you thinking about? It is still necessary to live up to this age.

What do I consider the most Russian in myself? Probably a generous soul, as in the ad for chocolate

– Are you enjoying tennis now?

– Yes. And this is expressed in everything. I enjoy the fact that I have a favorite business, goals, ambitions. I wake up in the morning, pack my bag and enjoy the process. I love the result very much, I love to win. I understand where I am going and what it can bring. Such incredible emotions that are difficult to get anywhere else.A kind of roller coaster. Even if there is sadness, grief and sometimes a depressive state after losses, this is also the essence of tennis. When everything is good all the time, it is also not very good. There is a balance of constant emotions and adrenaline that I experience thanks to tennis. Therefore, with age, I appreciate and understand this more and more.

I think one of the most difficult feelings for me is when there are no goals in life, no business. This is the most dangerous thing. There is no reason to get up in the morning. It’s important for me.

– You are 30 years old, but you love spontaneity, parties, tattoos – that is inherent in teenagers. How old do you feel?

– At 19. Why? It just is. Dasha Kasatkina and I are friends, and she even says: “Nastyukh, well, maximum 24”. And she’s just 24. We’re not really that different.

– You often talk about spontaneity. Is there an example of wild movement when you did something global in one second?

– I think it was 2016.I played Indian Wells and Miami, lost alone and paired with Sveta Kuznetsova. Immediately after the match, I came to the locker room, and I was in touch with my friends. I knew that they flew to Amsterdam. They say: “We will be here for 4-5 days.” I take a ticket in the locker room and fly to Amsterdam that very night. I made a decision in the same second. I packed my bags and two hours after the match I was already at the airport. Arrived, had a great time. I have many stories like this.

– “Considering how long I have been living abroad, I am more of a person of peace. But at the same time it is Russian unambiguously. ” What makes you Russian?

– Foreigners will never say that I am Russian. Not purely outwardly, because Russians always stand out abroad, especially if they are a couple. Appearance, clothing. I was always told that I was Dutch, Swedish, Spanish – anyone but Russian. What do I consider to be the most Russian in myself? Probably a generous soul, like in a chocolate ad.

If this is my man, I’m ready to give up. I think this is a very Russian topic. I noticed that foreigners are more restrained in everything. And here: he invited me home, covered the clearing, gave everyone a drink, fed everyone.

– Name three traits that you like about Russian people.

– Passion for what you do, some kind of return. I think Russians are generous, and this applies not only to finances, but also to emotions – if you celebrate, then do it to the fullest, surrender your soul.
