Singer Sewing Machine – Singer Parts, Overlockers & Sergers

Here at Hobbysew, we understand that machine “know- how” and after-purchase support is very important to help you get the most from your machine purchase. This is why we offer a free lesson with a service specialist to demonstrate how to use the functions of your machine and any computer functions and software capability* (at your local Hobbysew store).

All Singer machines from Hobbysew are Australian approved and fully backed by Factory Warranty.

 Singer Machine Threading Tutorial:

Singer is a trusted international brand for over 160 years.  Singer is famous for its first practical sewing machine for general domestic use, incorporating the basic eye-pointed needle and lock stitch developed by Elias B. Howe.   By 1860 the company was the largest manufacturer of sewing machines in the world.  Known for their leadership in industry due to their commitment to quality, reliability, innovation, hire purchase finance, and service.

Singer emphasized the role of women and their relationship to the home, evoking ideals of virtue, modesty, and diligence.  Though the sewing machine represented liberation from arduous hand sewing, it chiefly benefited those sewing for their families and themselves. For many women, Singer gave them independence and an ability to build a career.

By making simple, easy to use machines, Singer sewing machines have moved with the times. Their machines are easier to use, thus making them a perfect gateway to sewing for people around the world. From home décor and clothing construction to embroidery and quilting.  All Singer products have been electrically approved and come with a full manufacturer’s warranty.

The Singer Corporation produces a range of consumer products, including sewing machines, Singer Overlocker & Surgers. Now in Australia, is part of Blessington Group, which also imports the Pfaff and Husqvarna brands.

Hobbysew is a No 1 sewing machine dealer in Australia stocking Singer, with many dealerships including, Husqvarna, Handi Quilter, Janome, Brother, Bernina and many more.

Singer Sewing Machine Presser Foot Kit

This kit allows you to take on an even larger variety of sewing projects, with the included  Darning/Freehand Embroidery Foot, Blind-Hem Foot, Cording Foot, Even-Feed/Walking Foot, Gathering Foot, Narrow-Rolled Hemming Foot, Overcasting Foot, Special-Purpose Foot, Straight-Stitch Foot, and Twin Needle–all in a durable, custom-fit SINGER plastic container that includes a padded removable insert.

These Accessories fit most low-shank sewing machines, including Heavy Duty, Talent, Tradition, Simple, Brilliance, Quantum/Quantum Stylist, Confidence, Curvy, SINGER One, and Futura models.  PLEASE SEE DETAILED LIST BELOW.

The Darning/Freehand Embroidery Foot is used for stippling your quilts, for repairing holes or torn areas and creating freehand monograms, freehand embroidery, thread painting and most free-motion sewing. It releases the fabric when the needle is in the up position, allowing you to move the fabric freely.

The Blind-Hem Foot creates beautiful, invisible hems quickly and effortlessly. Great for cuffs and hems with a simple technique the pro’s use.  Use with woven or knits fabrics.  The guide gently helps you tack the fabric in place just in the right place for secure finishes on a variety of projects.

The Cording Foot is used to add surface embellishment to fabrics with cords, thin braids or yarn.  It can also be used for gathering, using a zigzag stitch over a thin cord and then pulling to gather your fabric to a desired fullness.  You can use 1, 2 or all 3 cords with this versatile presser foot and apply them to your fabric with many different decorative stitches.

The Even-Feed / Walking Foot evenly feeds multiple layers of fabric with no puckering or slipping.  It’s perfect for precisely matching stripes, plaids and patterns and excellent for quilting and sewing with pile fabrics.

The Gathering Foot simultaneously stitches and gathers light to medium weight fabric while it overcasts the raw edge.  With a wide 7mm needle slot, this presser foot is great for home decor and clothing projects or attaching a gathered layer onto any of your inspirations!

The Narrow Rolled Hem Foot creates a professional looking 1/8″ hem with ease.  It is designed for use with light to medium weight fabrics.  You can also couch over a narrow cord for a beautiful embellishment to any project.

The Overcasting Foot is also known as an overlocking foot or an overedge foot. It prevents the edge of your fabric from raveling by quickly wrapping thread around that edge.  It’s the next best thing to having a serger! It provides a professionally looking seam finish at the edge of a seam allowance, using a zigzag, multi-stitch zigzag or an overedge stitch. Or sew a seam and edge finish all in the same step.

The Special-Purpose Foot is a must for stitching dense satin stitches, perfect for applique work. The channel on the underside of the foot provides even delivery of the thread as you sew.

The Straight Stitch Foot does just that, helps you stitch precise straight stitches.  Simply line up the markings on this foot along the edge of your fabric, use a straight stitch, and that’s all there is to having perfectly straight stitches.  Excellent for top-stitching work!

The Twin Needle is 3mm wide and can be used for pintucks or decorative stitching. Never used a Twin Needle?  It’s very easy!  Once you insert the needle, use 2 spools of thread.  Thread the needle on the left with your left spool of thread and thread the needle on the right with your right spool of thread. Sewing Equipment At Spotlight

Spotlight has an extensive collection of sewing equipment for any crafter who is ready to tackle some serious projects. From exquisite sewing machines to mannequins and magnifiers, you can find all specialised sewing equipment in the Spotlight catalogue. So, what do you need to start with dressmaking? Let’s have a look at our comprehensive guide!

Which Sewing Machine Do I Need For Dressmaking?

The sewing machine is the cornerstone for your dressmaking craft. If you have an inferior sewing machine, the results you get are going to be affected in a major way. So, how do you choose the best sewing machine for dressmaking.

There are a couple of properties you need to look at to ensure you have the right sewing machine. While digital sewing machines are always the best option, as they provide a lot more functions, they can be a lot more expensive too. Fortunately, even basic electronic sewing machines provide plenty of features these days.

Some features are more important than others. If you want the most efficient machine, these are some of the options to look out for.

One-step buttonhole: With this feature on a sewing machine, you can easily place the buttonholes on your garments in minimal time. As the name indicates, creating a buttonhole only requires one easy step.

The freearm: Some sewing tasks can be incredibly precise, and you may even need to sew in a circular fashion. The freearm enables you to do this without any restrictions.

Adjustable needle positions: Being able to adjust the position of your sewing needle proves useful for a million different projects. Much like the freearm, it enables you to tackle more delicate tasks with greater ease.

Different stitches: Some digital sewing machines come with dozens of different stitches, which can be interesting for more advanced crafters. However, if you do not have the budget for one of the more advanced machines, we suggest getting a machine with the basic utility stitches. These utility stitches include the straight stitch, zigzag, buttonhole stitch and the reverse stitch.

What Measuring Tools Do I Need For Dressmaking?

Most crafters believe they only require a measuring tape for their dressmaking efforts. While a good measuring tape will get you quite far, it will not provide full support for certain dressmaking tasks. For example, a measuring tape enables you to get the right measurements of your model, but also allows to measure possible alterations.

Of course, there are other tasks you will need other measuring tools for – this includes a good ruler. A prime example is fabric measuring and cutting. Measuring tape can be less accurate when used on a flat surface, as there can be bends or bumps that cause your measurements to be a couple of centimetres off. So, make sure you have the right tools to cut your fabrics accurately.

What Other Tools Do I Need?

A sewing machine and a good measuring tape are the basics, but you also need other tools to make your dressmaking experience that more efficient. Here are some of the must-haves before you start with dressmaking.

Fabric scissors: You should always have a good pair of fabric scissors to cut your fabric. Fabric scissors protect the fabric against unravelling and ensure a more even cut. In turn, this can make fabric cutting more accurate and could save you lots of money in the long run.

Chalk: There will always be a need to mark certain things on your fabric – this could be an alteration or even a line where you need to cut fabric. Evidently, you cannot make these markings with a permanent marker. Instead, you can use some chalk. Once you have made the garment, simply wash the fabric to remove the chalk mark.

Regular scissors: Pattern cutting is also a part of dressmaking, so you must have a pair of regular scissors, also known as paper scissors. Like fabric scissors, you should only use your paper scissors to cut paper and fabric scissors should only be used for fabrics. Using your scissors for something else will cause your scissors to become blunt very quickly.

In addition to paper scissors and fabric scissors, a pair of embroidery scissors can be very useful to cut thread as well. Having these specialist scissors can increase the lifespan of each pair of scissors in your collection.

Singer Corporation – Singer Corporation

American sewing machine manufacturer

Singer Corporation is an American household sewing machine manufacturer, first founded as IM Singer & Co. in 1851 by Isaac M. Singer with New York lawyer Edward Clark. Best known for its sewing machines, it was renamed Singer Manufacturing Company in 1865 and then Singer in 1963.It is located in La Vergne, Tennessee, near Nashville. His first large-scale mass production facility was built in 1863 in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

History

Singer’s original design was the first practical sewing machine for general household use. It included a simple eyelet needle and locking stitch designed by Elias Howe, who won a patent infringement lawsuit against Singer in 1854.

Singer received patent # 8294 in August 1951 for an improved sewing machine that included a circular feed wheel, thread adjuster, and power transmitted by gears and shaft.

Singer collected enough patents in this area to enable him to mass produce, and by 1860 his company had become the largest sewing machine manufacturer in the world. In 1885, Singer introduced his first “vibrating shuttle” sewing machine, refining the modern cross-shuttle designs.Bobbins). Singer began selling its machines internationally in 1855 and won first prize at the Paris World’s Fair that same year. The company showcased the first workable electric sewing machine at the Philadelphia Electric Show in 1889 and began mass production of home electric sewing machines in 1910. Singer was also a marketing innovator and a pioneer in promoting the use of installment payments.

The Singer in Scotland

Workers leave the Singer sewing machine factory on the Clydebank

In 1867, the Singer Company decided that the demand for their sewing machines in Great Britain was high enough to open a local factory in Glasgow on John Street. Singer Vice President George Ross Mackenzie chose Glasgow because of its iron and steel industry, cheap labor, and shipping capabilities. The demand for sewing machines exceeded production at the new factory, and by 1873 a new larger factory was built on James Street in Brigiton.By that time, Singer employed more than 2,000 people in Scotland, but they still could not produce enough machines.

In 1882, Mackenzie, elected president of the Singer Manufacturing Company, held a groundbreaking ceremony on 46 acres (19 ha) of farmland in Kilbovy, Clydebank. Two main buildings were originally built, each 800 feet (240 m) long, 50 feet (15 m) wide and three stories high. They were linked by three wings.Above the middle wing was built a 200-foot (61 m) clock tower with the name “Singer” clearly visible to everyone for miles around. A total of 2.75 miles (4.43 km) of railway lines were laid throughout the plant to connect various divisions such as the boiler house, foundry, shipping and lines to the main train stations. Sir Robert McElpine was a construction contractor and the plant was designed with fire protection in mind using water sprinklers, making it the most modern plant in Europe at the time.

With nearly a million square feet and nearly 7,000 employees, an average of 13,000 machines could be produced per week, making the factory the largest sewing machine factory in the world. The Clydebank plant was so productive that in 1905 the American Singer Company founded and registered the Singer Manufacturing Company Ltd. in the United Kingdom. Demand continued to exceed production, so each building was expanded to 6 stories. A railway station with the company name was established in 1907 with connections to bordering cities and central Glasgow to help transport labor to the site.

During the First World War, the production of sewing machines gave way to the production of ammunition. Singer Clydebank has received over 5,000 government contracts and produced 303 million artillery shells, projectile components, fuses and aircraft parts, as well as grenades, rifle parts and 361,000 horseshoes. Its workforce of 14,000 was about 70% women at the end of the war.

From its opening in 1884 to 1943, the Kilbowie factory produced approximately 36 million sewing machines.Singer was the world leader and sold more cars than all other manufacturers combined. In 1913, the plant shipped 1.3 million machine tools. In the late 1950s and 1960s, significant changes took place at the Clydebank factory. In 1958, Singer cut production at its main US plant and transferred 40% of that production to the Clydebank plant to keep costs down. Between 1961 and 1964, the Clydebank plant underwent a £ 4 million modernization program, which resulted in the Clydebank plant discontinuing production of cast iron lathes and focusing on the production of aluminum lathes for Western markets. As part of this modernization program, the famous Singer Clock was demolished in 1963. At its peak in the mid-1960s, Singer employed more than 16,000 workers, but by the end of that decade there were forced layoffs, and 10 years later, the workforce had shrunk to 5,000. Financial problems and lack of orders forced the world’s largest sewing machine factory to close in June 1980, ending more than 100 years of sewing machine production in Scotland. The complex of buildings was demolished in 1998.

Marketing

The Singer sewing machine was the first sophisticated standardized technology to hit the mass market. It was not the first sewing machine, and its patent in 1851 led to a patent battle with Elias Howe, the inventor of lockstitch. This ultimately led to a patent sharing agreement between large firms.Marketing strategies included an emphasis on manufacturing, gender identity, loan plans, and installment plans.

Singer’s Marketing emphasized the role of women and their relationship to the home, evoking the ideals of virtue, modesty and hard work. While the sewing machine meant liberation from heavy hand sewing, it was of more benefit to those who sew, for their families and for themselves. Traders who rely on sewing for their livelihood continued to suffer from low wages, which were further reduced by the time savings gained from machine sewing.Singer offered credit purchases and a lease-to-buy agreement, allowing people to rent a car with lease payments applicable to the eventual purchase of a car and sell worldwide through direct sales campaigning door-to-door to showcase and sell the car.

World War II

During World War II, the company suspended production of sewing machines in order to obtain government contracts for the production of weapons. Factories in the United States supplied Norden bombsights and M1 Carbine rifle receivers to the US forces, while factories in Germany supplied weapons to their armed forces.

In 1939, the government provided the company with a production study to develop plans and standard sizes of raw materials for the production of M1911A1 pistols. On April 17 of the following year, Singer received an educational order for 500 units with serial numbers S800001 – S800500. The Educational Order was a program established by the U.S. Arms Administration to train companies with no weapons manufacturing experience to make weapons.

After 500 units were transferred to the US government, the management decided to produce artillery and bomb sights. The gun making tools and production equipment were transferred to Remington Rand and some to the Ithaca Gun Company. During World War II, around 1.75 million 1911A1 pistols were produced, making the original Singer pistols relatively rare and collectible.

In December 1940, Singer won a contract for the production of the M5 Antiaircraft Director, a version of the UK-designed Kerrison Predictor. The US Army had previously used the M7 computerized sight for its 37mm M1 anti-aircraft guns, but this gun proved to be temperamental and the Sperry Corporation was too busy building other systems to build the required number of M7s.After trials in September 1940, the army adopted the Kerrison as the M5, and later the 40mm Bofors cannon instead of the M1.

Post-war

Singer resumed development of sewing machines in 1946. After a problematic line of 206,000 zig-zag cars first produced in 1936, they introduced one of their most popular, high-quality and fully optional cars in 1952, the 401 Slant-o-Matic. In 2011, it was 160 years old. They currently manufacture computerized, heavy duty, embroidery, quilting, edging and mechanical sewing machines.

In 2017, they launched the new Singer Sewing Assistant app.

Diversification

In the 1960s, the company diversified by acquiring the Friden calculator company in 1965 and the General Precision Equipment Corporation in 1968. GPE included Librascope, The Kearfott Company, Inc. and Link Flight Simulation. Singer also acquired GPS Systems in 1968 and added it to the Link Simulations Systems Division (LSSD).This division produced simulators for the control room of a nuclear power plant in Silver Spring, Maryland: Tech Road Building for Boiling Water Reactor (BWR), Parkway Building for Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR), and then moved to Broken Land Parkway in Columbia, Maryland. while flight simulators were produced in Binghamton, New York.

In 1987, corporate raider Paul Bilzerian made a green mail on Singer and eventually became the owner of the company when the White Knight’s savior did not appear. To get his money back, Bilzerian sold part of the company. Kearfott was split, Kearfott Guidance & Navigation Corporation was sold to Astronautics Corporation of America in 1988, and the Electronic Systems division was acquired by Plessey in 1988 and renamed Plessey Electronic Systems (then acquired by GEC-Marconi in 1990, renamed GEC .– Marconi Electronic Systems, later incorporated into BAE Systems). The four Link divisions developing and supporting industrial and flight simulation were sold to Canadian Avionics Electronics (CAE) and transformed into CAE-Link.The nuclear power simulator division became S3 Technologies and then GSE Systems and moved to Eldersburg, Maryland. The sewing machines division was sold in 1989 to Semi-Tech Microelectronics, a public company based in Toronto.

For several years in the 1970s, Singer set up a national sales team for CAT (now known as UNIX troff) photosetters from another Massachusetts company, Graphic Systems Inc. This division was acquired by Wang Laboratories in 1978.

21st Century

Sales and profits grew until the 1940s. Several factors influenced the market. The US market matured after World War II. Japanese manufacturers have entered the market with zigzag sewing machines. Under the leadership of Donald P. Kircher, Singer entered markets such as office equipment, defense and aerospace. Revenue, of which 90% of sewing machine revenue fell to 35% after diversification.

During the 1980s, Japanese machines and European brands including Bernina, Pfaff and Viking entered the Singer sewing machine markets. In 1986, the original Singer spun off its sewing machine business under the name SSMC. In 1989, Semi-Tech Global acquired SSMC, renaming SSMC back to Singer. Semi-Tech Global has incorporated Singer into Singer NV, based in the Netherlands Antilles, owned by a Hong Kong holding company.

Singer NV filed for bankruptcy in 1999 and was acquired by Kohlberg & Company. In 1997, the US company Singer (Singer NV) relocated its consumer products to La Vergne, Tennessee. This place also served as a wholesaler of sewing machines and spare parts. In 2006, Singer’s parent company Kohlberg & Company acquired the Husqvarna and Pfaff brands. This merged the three brands into the current SVP Group. Its main competitors are Baby Lock, Bernina, Brother, Janome, Juki, and Aisin Seiki.

Singer Building

Singer was heavily involved in Manhattan real estate in the 1800s through Edward Clark, the company’s founder.Clarke built the Dakota Apartments and other buildings in Manhattan in the 1880s. In 1900, Singer hired Ernest Flagg to build a 12-story loft on Broadway and Prince Street in Lower Manhattan. The building is now considered architecturally remarkable and has been restored.

The 47-story Singer Building, built in 1908, was also designed by Flagg, who designed two outstanding residences for the Bourne. Built during the Bourne reign, the Singer Building (demolished in 1968) was then the tallest building in the world and the tallest building that was deliberately demolished until the twin towers of the World Trade Center were destroyed in the 9/11 attacks.

At his Clydebank factory, Singer built a 200-foot (61 m) clock tower that towered over the central wing and was reputed to be the largest four-dial clock in the world. Each face weighed five tons, and it took four men fifteen minutes twice a week to keep it in the wound. The tower was demolished after the factory closed in 1980 and is now home to the Clydebank Business Park. The Singer railway station, built to service the plant, is still operational.

The famous Singers’ House, designed by the architect Pavel Suzor, was built in 1902–1904 on Nevsky Prospekt in St. Petersburg as the headquarters of the Russian branch of the company. This modern building (located opposite the Kazan Cathedral) is officially recognized as an object of the historical and cultural heritage of Russia.

In 2018, a major factory fire destroyed Singer’s distribution office and warehouse in Seven Hills, Sydney.Singer manufactured sewing machines in Australia at a purpose-built factory in Penrith, a suburb of Western Sydney, from 1959 to 1967.
