Narrator: Humans have been making silk for centuries. It’s a coveted textile for gowns, sheets, and robes. But why is it so expensive? Silk is the product of the domesticated silkworm, Bombyx mori. The caterpillars eat constantly. They’re fed mulberry leaves five times a day. After 45 days of munching and growing, the worms are ready to mature.

They have a special spinneret that secretes one long continuous filament. That’s the silk. The silkworms spin this filament into a cocoon. Then the caterpillar begins its transformation. Except, this is when silk producers butt in. The cocoons are steamed. This cleans them and kills the pupa inside. If the pupas were kept alive, they would degrade and break the silk. Then the cocoons are unraveled to reveal around half a mile of usable filament.

Filaments are joined to create a thread thick enough to weave into fabric. One yard of silk fabric costs approximately $100. What makes it worth the cost? We spoke to a few experts on the subject to find out. Shawne Jacobs is the creative director and president of wedding dress design house, Anne Barge.

Silk was once used as a type of currency in trade and played a big part in Vietnam’s history and economic development. It still plays a prominent role in Vietnamese culture today. Looking to buy some? Here are the best spots.

Silk is a natural protein fiber produced from the silkworm’s cocoon, and some forms can be woven into textiles. It takes around 3,000 silkworms consuming 104 kilograms of mulberry leaves to produce two pounds (one kilogram) of silk; the process lasts over three days. The result is a material that is light weight, soft and very absorbent, making it an ideal fabric for warmer countries.

Silk was once considered extremely luxurious and thus available only to noble families. Now the fabric is widely used, and beautiful silk products are affordably to anyone. They make great souvenirs. It will cost you at least VND$70,000 for a meter of silk and at least VND$100,000 per meter for premium kinds. Be weary of buying silk for prices lower than that since they can be of questionable quality.

Located on the edge of the Old Quarter of Hanoi is a silk haven that goes by the name of Hang Gai Street (or Silk Street). This is the go-to place for silk shopping, and this street has a handful of small shops that all specialize in silk and embroidery. You will find similar merchandise being sold in these stores, but at different prices, which may confuse you. Yet, due to the authenticity of what you are getting, it is still better than negotiating for silk at the market.If you are looking for a silk T-shirt or custom-made suit, head over to Le Minh, store number 79-111 at Hang Gai street. This store has been in operation since 1954, handed down through generations, and offers quality tailoring at very reasonable and affordable prices. This store has one of the best selections of silk in the city, and you can either get something tailored here or find many read-to-wear items from the inventory, such as shirts, trousers, pajamas and scarves. You can even get silk ties, embroidered tablecloths, napkins and wall hangings to take back home as a souvenir. You will even be given written instructions on how to care for your purchases so you do not end up damaging them.

Hoi An is known as a tailoring mecca. The old town itself has around 400 tailor shops dotted along its alleyways. If you want to buy silk here, head over to The Cocoon Silk for a very educational and enjoyable shopping experience. The owner is extremely knowledgeable and helpful here, teaching you all about the silkworms and processes. There is even a display where you can watch young live silkworms feed on mulberry leaves and older ones spin their cocoons. There is a wide variety of silk displayed on racks, priced and graded, so no bargaining is involved. You don’t have to worry about authenticity here either as the silk test will be done right in front of your eyes — a flame is held to the fabric, but it will not ignite and only giving off a smell of burnt hair.

The Hoi An Cloth Market is also a silk dream come true, and you will find some of the finest silk in Vietnam on sale. There is wide range of silk to be bought here; you can later take it to a tailor to create your dream silk outfit. Check out BeBe Tailor who can produce just about anything.

Alternatively, head over to the Hoi An Silk Village, once a silk hub in Hoi An 300 years ago involved in the silk trade. For the filler of blankets and pillows , it is not fundamentally important what kind of silk is used – they both have a beneficial effect on the human body, have antibacterial properties and are completely hypoallergenic.

But in use, of course, there is a difference – blankets and pillows with Malberry filler are smoother and more luxuriant, it is precisely the long length of this silk thread that contributes to this – the filler is laid out in uniform layers and is not quilted.

What about the fabrics? Its important indicators are density and thickness.

The thickness of a silk fabric is usually measured in “momme” (pronounced “mammy”). 1 mammi is the weight of a square meter of silk fabric equal to 4.3056 grams. It is a common unit of weight originating in Japan and used to measure and describe natural silk fabrics. The higher this indicator, the denser, stronger and heavier the natural silk.

The most common weights of natural silk for bedding are 12, 14, 16 and 19 momme.Fabrics 22, 24, 25 and 30 mammi are less common and are classified as Super Elite.

Silk cannot be infinitely much, it is grown on farms of a certain size and in strictly defined climatic areas, therefore it is impossible to multiply the habitat of the silkworm in order to reduce its cost by increasing the volume of silk on the world market.

What else is important?

Fillers made from natural organic silk are alive, these are the threads that are good for health. Special manual processing without rough intervention (without steaming, tefloration, etc.)) retains all the wonderful qualities of this fiber. The “life” of such a silk filler is up to 12 years.

Silk fiber – self-cleaning , which is why silk blankets and pillows do not need to be washed! They are only ventilated several times a year in a shaded area.

If you see washable silk filler, it is no longer organic fiber. This is also natural silk, but it has undergone industrial processing, dust crunch will not start in it, it will retain its hypoallergenic properties, but there will be no magic expected from its use.

Bed linen, sleep masks, bathrobes must be washed! But only by hand or on a delicate cycle, without spinning, using special detergents for washing silk, which preserve the life of the fiber.
