Silk is known to be one of the finest yarns available and can be used to create an elegant-looking fabric and rustic look.  Silk fabric comes in a variety of weights.  Lighter silk will usually be used for a dress, while a heavier silk may be used to create a suit.  Silk can also be crisp or softened.  A crisp silk will be used for a top or as trim, while softened silk will be used to create pants.

How much does silk fabric cost?

The cost of silk fabric will depend on the type, quality, its rarity, the amount, the colors and where it’s purchased from. On average, the cost of silk is going to vary anywhere from $5 to as much as $65 per yard.  Most silk fabric, from what we saw, will be in the $5 to $15 per yard range.

FashionFabricsClub.com, an online retailer that sells different kinds of silk in various colors, sells silk for $7 to $60 per yard.

Walmart often carries a handful of options at its local stores.  Here, the prices range anywhere from $10 to $45 per yard, depending on the pattern and brand.

Type of SilkDescriptionAverage Price (per yard)
CharmeuseHas soft muted crepe on one side and a classic shiny satin look on the other. This silk can be stretchier than most.$7 to $22
ChiffonStronger and heavier than gauze silk, it’s woven in a way to create a crepe-like texture.$5 to $10
Crepe de ChineAvailable in several weights and will commonly come in black and white. It will have a slight crinkled textured with a gentle drape. The sheen will be more subtle when compared to most.$8 to $19
DupioniA plain weave crisp style of silk, often woven with differing colors.$13 to $21
GauzeLight in weight, delicate, very soft and can work great with dyes.$3 to $5
GeorgetteA sheer, lightwegith, dull-finished fabric named after the French dressmaker, Georgette de la Plante. $10 to $22
HabotaiKnown as a “china silk,” this is the classic silk seen in most projects. It’s soft, lustrous and perfect for those who are beginning to work with silk.$3 to $6
JerseyA machine-made fabric and can be more elastic than most silk.$5 to $20
OrganzaThis crisp silk is strong, flat and smooth in feel. It’s great for garments and lampshade work.$5 to $8
RawAs it notes, raw silk will be natural with an off-white color. It can be rough to the feel.$4 to $8
TaffetaA crisp, smooth plain woven fabric made from silk.$15 to $33

Silk fabric overview

Silk, like any other fabric, can come in many colors, including beige, black, blue, brown, gray, green, ivory, orange and pink.  The fabric can come in widths ranging from 36 to 72 inches, with the high majority being in the 44 to 57-inch range.

While most silk fabric will be a solid color pattern, it can also be found with stripes, plaid, floral designs or an abstract look.

Silk fabric is suited for apparel, blouses, bridal gowns, drapes, dresses, jackets, overlays, slacks and suits.

How can I save money?

Since silk can be hard to find locally, you may have to buy it online.  Before committing to your purchase, consider ordering a small sample, something many online retailers allow you to do.  This way, you will know if the fabric will work with your project.

The Amount of Work That Goes Into Creating Silk Makes It so Expensive

  • Silk is the epitome of luxury when it comes to fabric whether it’s for robes, sheets, or dresses.
  • There’s a lot of work that goes into making this luscious fabric come to life.
  • Silkworms spin cocoons that silk producers eventually unravel and join to create the thread.
  • Silk production costs have gone up with the introduction of synthetic fabrics like polyester.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

Following is a transcript of the video.

Narrator: Humans have been making silk for centuries. It’s a coveted textile for gowns, sheets, and robes. But why is it so expensive? Silk is the product of the domesticated silkworm, Bombyx mori. The caterpillars eat constantly. They’re fed mulberry leaves five times a day. After 45 days of munching and growing, the worms are ready to mature.

They have a special spinneret that secretes one long continuous filament. That’s the silk. The silkworms spin this filament into a cocoon. Then the caterpillar begins its transformation. Except, this is when silk producers butt in. The cocoons are steamed. This cleans them and kills the pupa inside. If the pupas were kept alive, they would degrade and break the silk. Then the cocoons are unraveled to reveal around half a mile of usable filament.

Filaments are joined to create a thread thick enough to weave into fabric. One yard of silk fabric costs approximately $100. What makes it worth the cost? We spoke to a few experts on the subject to find out. Shawne Jacobs is the creative director and president of wedding dress design house, Anne Barge.

Consumers accustomed to synthetic materials like polyester expect perfection. Professor Daniel Nicodemo credits silk’s price tag to its thermal conductivity and sturdiness. It’s also easily dyed and doesn’t cause skin irritation. So what do you think? Is silk worth the cost?

The Best Places to Buy Silk in Vietnam

Hanoi Silk | © alq666/Flickr

Silk was once used as a type of currency in trade and played a big part in Vietnam’s history and economic development. It still plays a prominent role in Vietnamese culture today. Looking to buy some? Here are the best spots.

Silk is a natural protein fiber produced from the silkworm’s cocoon, and some forms can be woven into textiles. It takes around 3,000 silkworms consuming 104 kilograms of mulberry leaves to produce two pounds (one kilogram) of silk; the process lasts over three days. The result is a material that is light weight, soft and very absorbent, making it an ideal fabric for warmer countries.

Silk was once considered extremely luxurious and thus available only to noble families. Now the fabric is widely used, and beautiful silk products are affordably to anyone. They make great souvenirs. It will cost you at least VND$70,000 for a meter of silk and at least VND$100,000 per meter for premium kinds. Be weary of buying silk for prices lower than that since they can be of questionable quality.

The three main cities to buy silk in Vietnam are:

Hanoi

Market, Store

Market silk vendor | © Wendy Harman/Flickr

Located on the edge of the Old Quarter of Hanoi is a silk haven that goes by the name of Hang Gai Street (or Silk Street). This is the go-to place for silk shopping, and this street has a handful of small shops that all specialize in silk and embroidery. You will find similar merchandise being sold in these stores, but at different prices, which may confuse you. Yet, due to the authenticity of what you are getting, it is still better than negotiating for silk at the market. If you are looking for a silk T-shirt or custom-made suit, head over to Le Minh, store number 79-111 at Hang Gai street. This store has been in operation since 1954, handed down through generations, and offers quality tailoring at very reasonable and affordable prices. This store has one of the best selections of silk in the city, and you can either get something tailored here or find many read-to-wear items from the inventory, such as shirts, trousers, pajamas and scarves. You can even get silk ties, embroidered tablecloths, napkins and wall hangings to take back home as a souvenir. You will even be given written instructions on how to care for your purchases so you do not end up damaging them.

Hoi An is known as a tailoring mecca. The old town itself has around 400 tailor shops dotted along its alleyways. If you want to buy silk here, head over to The Cocoon Silk for a very educational and enjoyable shopping experience. The owner is extremely knowledgeable and helpful here, teaching you all about the silkworms and processes. There is even a display where you can watch young live silkworms feed on mulberry leaves and older ones spin their cocoons. There is a wide variety of silk displayed on racks, priced and graded, so no bargaining is involved. You don’t have to worry about authenticity here either as the silk test will be done right in front of your eyes — a flame is held to the fabric, but it will not ignite and only giving off a smell of burnt hair.

The Hoi An Cloth Market is also a silk dream come true, and you will find some of the finest silk in Vietnam on sale. There is wide range of silk to be bought here; you can later take it to a tailor to create your dream silk outfit. Check out BeBe Tailor who can produce just about anything.

Alternatively, head over to the Hoi An Silk Village, once a silk hub in Hoi An 300 years ago involved in the silk trade. Now you will find dozens of local artisans manufacturing and weaving silk into garments and tapestries using ancient looms. You can buy the material or any finished product. This is also a resort and restaurant all in one.

Contrary to popular belief, Ben Thanh Market is where you should not go if you are looking to buy authentic silk for a reasonable price. Chances are that you will end up buying fake silk at outrageous prices. Granted some stores do offer the real thing, but the information you get is mixed, so it is best to stay away altogether. The cloth market at Tan Binh or Tan Dinh are better alternatives, as is Chinatown (Cho Lon).

For a hassle-free experience, check out Toan Thinh Silk, a professional silk manufacturing enterprise that supplies silk not only to customers but also to designers in the Vietnam fashion market and also overseas. It exports fabric to Korea, Japan, Thailand, Denmark, France, England and the U.S., so you are guaranteed the real thing here. There is a large variety of silk available and all prices are fixed, so no haggling is involved. 419 Hai Ba Trung, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam,

What you need to know about natural silk?

Natural silk is just the threads of silkworm cocoons! No other materials are organic silk.

There are 2 types of silkworm cocoons. – cultivated and wild.

  • From noble cultural cocoons, a long (up to 1500 m / 1.5 km) smooth, cream-colored or white thread is produced. This yarn is used to produce fabrics and fillers grade Mulberry (Mulberry).
  • From “wild” cocoons a shorter and darker thread is obtained, from which silk filler Tussah (Tussah) is produced.

BOTH SILKS – 100% natural, i.e.e. made from silkworm cocoons.

For the filler of blankets and pillows , it is not fundamentally important what kind of silk is used – they both have a beneficial effect on the human body, have antibacterial properties and are completely hypoallergenic.

But in use, of course, there is a difference – blankets and pillows with Malberry filler are smoother and more luxuriant, it is precisely the long length of this silk thread that contributes to this – the filler is laid out in uniform layers and is not quilted.

What about the fabrics? Its important indicators are density and thickness.

The thickness of a silk fabric is usually measured in “momme” (pronounced “mammy”). 1 mammi is the weight of a square meter of silk fabric equal to 4.3056 grams. It is a common unit of weight originating in Japan and used to measure and describe natural silk fabrics. The higher this indicator, the denser, stronger and heavier the natural silk.

The most common weights of natural silk for bedding are 12, 14, 16 and 19 momme.Fabrics 22, 24, 25 and 30 mammi are less common and are classified as Super Elite.

Silk density examples:

  • From 8 to 12 mammy – dense fabrics such as crepe, satin.
  • From 12 to 18 mammy – medium density satin and jacquard.
  • From 19 to 22 mammy – high density satin and jacquard.
  • 23 Mammi and up – Super High Density Atlas.

You’ve probably heard that the history of natural silk goes back several millennia. There was a time when the secret of this material was kept in arms (China, Japan). Silk in Asia was more expensive and desirable than gold.

The reverent attitude towards natural silk is based on thousands of years of observation of the influence of natural silk on the body. 100% natural silk heals, rejuvenates, soothes and gently tones. It is used both for cosmetic purposes and to alleviate the condition of various diseases such as asthma, allergies, dermatitis.

What is the use of silk?

  • Silk is the only natural filler for blankets and pillows that is absolutely hypoallergenic . It never harbors dust mites and mold bacteria. Silk pillows and blankets are recommended for use by pregnant women and children, as well as people with chronic respiratory diseases and allergy sufferers.
  • Silk is the only fabric that retains moisture on the surface of the skin. In direct contact with the skin, silk peptides prevent dehydration of skin cells, therefore silk pillowcases reduce the production of sweat, as well as the loss of fluid and nutrients by skin cells and hair follicles.

It is wonderful that nowadays natural silk is available to everyone who is ready to purchase products from it. Now we can use its magical restorative properties to our advantage!

Products made from natural silk cannot be cheap!

  • First, there is an established exchange price for high-quality natural silk, similar to that for oil. Sellers of raw materials and fabrics manufacturers are guided by this price, therefore VARIETY SILK IS NEVER SOLD UNDER THE SET PRICE LIMIT.

If you are offered cheap silk pillows and blankets, it means that they do not contain varietal filler, but are combed after the production of natural fiber, trimmings or illiquid stock. Often this is stale or stale fiber that has not been processed in a timely manner.

  • Secondly, the collection and processing of cocoons is always done MANUALLY. That is, it is not possible to fully automate and, as a result, to reduce the cost of silk production due to the fact that the raw materials are very delicate.
  • Thirdly, the amount of natural silk fibers is LIMITED by the yield of the current year! Like any other product, the quantity and quality of cocoons of the current year is influenced by the weather conditions.

Silk cannot be infinitely much, it is grown on farms of a certain size and in strictly defined climatic areas, therefore it is impossible to multiply the habitat of the silkworm in order to reduce its cost by increasing the volume of silk on the world market.

What else is important?

Fillers made from natural organic silk are alive, these are the threads that are good for health. Special manual processing without rough intervention (without steaming, tefloration, etc.)) retains all the wonderful qualities of this fiber. The “life” of such a silk filler is up to 12 years.

Silk fiber – self-cleaning , which is why silk blankets and pillows do not need to be washed! They are only ventilated several times a year in a shaded area.

If you see washable silk filler, it is no longer organic fiber. This is also natural silk, but it has undergone industrial processing, dust crunch will not start in it, it will retain its hypoallergenic properties, but there will be no magic expected from its use.

Bed linen, sleep masks, bathrobes must be washed! But only by hand or on a delicate cycle, without spinning, using special detergents for washing silk, which preserve the life of the fiber.

Silk products must not be dried on a radiator or in direct sunlight. , this “kills” the fiber.
