theNotice – Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil Shampoo review (+ the best makeup brush cleaner during quarantine)
It’s no secret that I love the Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil Shampoo. It’s an incredibly elegant product, with a dense lather and a thick, smooth gel texture. But I’ve been appreciating it for a fresh, new reason during quarantine: it makes the best makeup brush cleaner ever.
What to love about the Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil Shampoo’s texture
I mean… what isn’t there to love? Shu’s Airy Touch Cleansing Oil hair collection is formulated around the common hair ethos that “like removes like.” If you’re dyeing a client’s hair and you stain their hairline with colour, scrubbing it under the water with shampoo does very little. But if you add a little bit of dye to your shampoo and massage it in, the colour slides off the skin almost instantly.
Similarly, oil removes oil — both from your face and from your scalp. (Shu Uemura developed Unmask, his classic cleansing oil, while working on celebrities in 1967.) Shu’s shampoo formula uses light, fluid oils to distribute the shampoo throughout your whole scalp, right into your ends and your congested scalp. Then, it whisks away those oils with emulsifiers and surfactants, cleaning your scalp as it nourishes each strand of hair. No parabens; no silicones; just clean, silky hair.
But the draw of this shampoo, I think, isn’t its efficacy. It’s its experience. From the bottle’s sleek, sans serif print to its slow-pressing pump, it makes you enjoy the methodical pleasure of shampooing your hair. (Or someone else’s). The shampoo itself is thick and smooth, almost oily; it feels like something that should be sold as an ointment to the gods for hundreds of dollars an ounce. It’s unique, and well-loved by many: I can’t tell you how many house guests have sneakily alluded that I should just let them take my bottle home with them.
(NO! And you all need to stop asking!)
What makes the Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil Shampoo the best makeup brush cleaner ever
It’s simple: the texture is great, but the scent really sells it.
For most of the year (or like, most of the decade), I wouldn’t splash out this much money for a brush cleaner. But under quarantine, I’ve been finding a lot of solace in enjoying things. I usually take my little breaks from reality by going out for dinner—I recently realized that I’m totally going to miss this year’s Canada Day tasting menu at The Butternut Tree, and I’m enormously bummed because I left a crazy tip when we made the reservation and now I’ll never get to enjoy a great table because of it—and, well, that’s not an option right now.
So, instead, I’ve been shopping my stash a lot (a lot) for new sensory experiences. I finished my first bottle of Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil Shampoo years ago, but have been saving this smaller bottle. And it’s… perfect.
Shu hair products smell expensive — and they are. Their cleansing oil hair products are based around the idea of the onsen, or Japanese hot spring, and they’re delicately scented with notes of yuzu, cedar, and sage. It smells like nothing else I own, honestly; it’s not watery, or citrusy, or fresh. It just smells good, in a really natural way, and it makes me enjoy everyday chores again.
And hey, if my shampoo can leave me sniffing my hands for an hour after I wash my makeup brushes, I’ll take it. Because we could all sure as heck use as much comfort as we can get our hands on right now.
Availability: $46 CAD for this bottle (4.7 oz) or $57 CAD for the regular size (a massive 13.4 oz, and a much better deal). Find it at Sephora, shu uemuera, or The Bay.
Disclaimer: This shampoo was gifted to me a couple of years ago, kept in cold storage, and unearthed at week six of quarantine (you know, when I really started losing my grip on reality). It’s photographed here on a print from Photowall.

SHU UEMURA Art of Hair has proven to be a superb line with a great many thoughtfully crafted luxurious haircare products, and everything that I have had the pleasure of using has been gentle and nourishing for my naturally curly hair. I am continually astonished by the combination of efficacy and ecstasy that their products engender, and never before have I been so enraptured by shampoos and conditioners as I am by theirs. It is this beautiful balance between highly effective, gentle and nourishing products that are delectable smelling and dreamy to touch that makes SHU UEMURA Art of Hair products such a joy to use.
SHU UEMURA Art of Hair Cleansing Oil Shampoo is described as a, “delicate formula that transforms quickly into a rich foam that effectively draws out the impurities and build-up on the scalp without stripping the natural oils. Leaves hair naturally radiant, soft and in balanced state – volumized and moisturized.” Paraben and silicone free.
This shampoo is made for dry scalp and hair, but it will do wonders for all types of hair. It is so gentle and non-stripping that my hair is manageable before I even condition my hair. It deeply and gently cleanses the hair and scalp, and it hydrates without overdoing it. Hair is never left greasy or feeling dirty, but instead feels nourished, moisturized and soothed. Furthermore, my hair is left soft, supple and shiny when I use this shampoo, and for me that is something that I am generally only able to achieve with a richly moisturizing conditioner. Additionally, the scent is absolutely an intoxicatingly beautiful and refined fruity floral.
Perfect for all hair types and textures, the oil-to-foam formula binds with the grease and product buildup on your scalp before gently whisking them away. At the same time, it respects your hair’s natural oils, so your strands never feel dry or stripped. Finally, it adds bounce and body to your locks while leaving behind a calming yuzu citrus scent. All in all, it’s a true superhero product.

The Five Biggest Misconceptions About Hair Oils:
Hair Oils are Heavy: Unlike some oil products that sit on top of the hair, products with Camellia Oil rapidly absorb thanks to a high concentration of lipids and minerals that work to protect and hydrate the hair.
Hair Oil Will Make Your Hair Look Greasy: With the correct application technique and amount of product, hair will appear healthy and shiny – NOT greasy. Only a pea-sized amount of oil should be used on mid–lengths to ends, NEVER roots.
Oil Shouldn’t Be Used On Second Day Hair: Oils are a great way to revive second day hair by working to smooth frizz, hydrate dry ends, banish second day dullness and refreshing shine with an added hint of fragrance.
Oil Should Only Be Applied To Wet Hair: In addition to being a great styling aid, oils can be applied to dry hair to add shine, time frizz and flyways, and also as a great pre-shampoo treatment for extra conditioning when applied to dry hair before washing. For extra nourishment, apply to dry hair at night from mid-lengths to ends. Leave on overnight and wash normally in the morning.
All Hair Oils Are The Same: From argan to almond to coconut and Camellia, hair oils each offer unique benefits and nutrients. Choose an oil that is easily absorbed so it doesn’t weigh hair down or leave it looking greasy.
Cleansing Oil Shampoo for Dry Scalp & Hair relies on the benefits of Neroli Essential Oil to purify, soothe and calm the scalp while also adding moisture to each strand of hair. Extracted from blossoms of the Bitter Orange Tree, Neroli Essential Oil is renowned for its relaxing effect on the body and mind and has a rejuvenating and regenerative effect on the scalp.
Onsen is known in Japan for its purification properties to cleanse and nourish. Onsen Inspired Ferment is drawn from volcanic sources, situated 2000m deep off the California coast and is renowned for its ancestral benefits on mind & body.
Follow Shu Uemura Art of Hair:
Overall Assessment: While this shampoo is made with dry hair and scalp in mind, it is so gentle and nourishing that its benefits are far more reaching for all types of hair. This is one of the most luxurious and exceptional shampoos that I have ever used, and it is so much more than a mere shampoo that it really deserves a whole different category of its own. It is such a joy to use that I find myself savoring the experience of washing my hair, and that is something that I seldom do! A+

Review: Shu Uemura Art of Hair Cleansing Oil Shampoo, Cleansing Oil Conditioner & Essence Absolue Oil-in-Cream
If you are not one to splurge on your haircare, then I urge you to stop reading now. Shu Uemura is best known for their facial cleansing oils, and the Shu Uemura Art of Hair has its own line of oil-based products for the hair featuring ferments found in onsen (hot springs in Japan) that are known for their purifying properties. Today I’m sharing with you my thoughts on the Shu Uemura Art of Oils line, specifically the Cleansing Oil Shampoo, Cleansing Oil Conditioner, and the Absolue Oil-in-Cream.
The Cleansing Oil Shampoo ($56 for 400mL) is a light fluid clear liquid that is lightly scented with camelia. Claimed to be paraben and silicone-free, it also includes onsen inspired ferment. It gently cleanses the hair while balancing the scalp. It also claims to provide radiance, leaving hair feeling light and airy.
This shampoo is super gentle on my scalp. I get dry and sensitive scalp often around this time of year, of when I’m feeling stressed out, but this helped to balance out the dryness and protect my scalp. My scalp never felt tight, and it cleaned it right so it didn’t feel heavy either. The best part was because my scalp was balanced, I could get away with washing my hair every 4 days instead of the usual every 2-3 (it sounds kinda gross but washing your hair less is actually better for the hair and scalp).
My biggest issue with this shampoo is that I felt like it didn’t lather as much as I would have liked it to. The soap suds are rather thin, and it doesn’t leave my hair feel as squeaky clean. Although I know my hair is clean, I prefer that there’s a squeaky clean type of feel after rinsing out my shampoo, and this just didn’t give that.
The price of $56 is pretty hefty, so I can’t exactly recommend it. I like it because I can get away with washing my hair less. If you are someone who has scalp issues and need more of a balanced shampoo that cleanses your hair and scalp but never strips, then this shampoo is worth looking into. Or, if you’re like me and want to transition into washing your hair less and/or is lazy, then this is also perfect for you. If you prefer a more clarifying shampoo, then you should overlook this.
The Cleansing Oil Conditioner (C$56 for 250mL) is an ultra lightweight, fluid conditioner that you leave in the hair after shampooing, then rinse out. It claims to be formulated with onsen inspired ferment that leaves hair feeling soft and radiant, as well as light and airy. It is also lightly scented with camelia.
This conditioner is super light, more of a lotion texture than the cream conditioners I’ve used in the past. It coats hair well, and it absorbs very quickly. I like to leave it in my hair for a minutes while I wash my face and body so that the conditioning properties are maximized, and I found that by leaving it in my hair just a tad longer, it makes my hair feel 10 times smoother and more moisturized than if I had just rubbed it in then rinsed it out. My hair never feels heavy, and there is zero residue left behind after rinsing.
While I really like this conditioner because it is hydrating and doesn’t weigh down hair, priced at $56, it’s not enough of a miracle worker in order for me to recommend it. There are other conditioners out there that do a similar job at a fraction of the price.
My favourite of the three products, the Essence Absolue Oil-in-Cream (C$69 for 150mL) is a hair cream that melts into a thin oil once rubbed into the palms of my hands.
This cream is so lightweight and lightly scented with camelia oil; it absorbs right into the ends of my towel-dried hair. I use it every time after I wash and condition my hair with the Cleansing Oil Shampoo and Cleansing Oil Conditioner – only a pea-sized amount is required – and right before blowdrying. It helps to alleviate several of my hair issues in the winter, such as frizz, flyaways, dryness, and static, and it also protects against the blowdryer’s heat. My hair is never left feeling heavy or greasy, rather it feels silky and smooth. It has been a winter necessity, especially because of how static-y my hair feels due to the dry air.
Of the three products in the Shu Uemura Art of Oils line reviewed here, I would have to recommend this one. While it is very expensive, it truly does work. A tiny bit goes a long way, and if you’ve had issues with frizzyness or dryness, and dislike silicone-heavy hair products, this one will be good for you.
skin care by category – cleansing oil
as the first product shu uemura ever released for his cosmetics line, cleansing oils represent his philosophy that beautiful makeup begins with beautiful skin. shu uemura’s oil-based cleansers differ from the conventional face wash, with natural ingredients that gently lift impurities and makeup. everyone’s skin is different, which is why each facial cleanser is designed to suit different skin types, making it easy to find a face wash for dry skin or oily skin. formulated to both remove makeup and correct problematic skin, mr. uemura’s facial cleansing oils are even perfect as face wash for sensitive skin. first use our face makeup and makeup brushes to create a long lasting and flawless base, then take it off at the end of the day with face oil for a simple cleansing routine.
how to use cleansing oil?
first, take 3-4 pumps of the cleansing oil into your palm. then, gently apply it on your forehead and cheeks without rubbing it in. since you’re using an oil-based cleanser, add some water to your hands to emulsify the skin cleanser. after, start massaging your face in soft circles. to get the deepest benefits, slowly massage the facial cleansing oil outwards and down towards your neck. cleansing oil can be utilized as a face wash for dry skin since the formula leaves skin cleansed and hydrated so you’re fully prepped for makeup or skincare.
how often should you oil cleanse your face?
during the morning, use an oil-based cleanser to remove your overnight skincare and to prep the face for makeup. at night, use a cleansing oil for oily skin as a deep facial cleanser to remove impurities and makeup like your best waterproof mascara, and leave your skin refreshed without any oily residue.
what is the best cleansing oil?
facial cleanser should be used to address your specific skin type and concerns. therefore, there is no best cleansing oil for everyone. listen to your skin’s needs and select a skin cleanser based on your personal skin type. for the best cleansing oil for acne prone skin, use the porefinist2 facial cleanser daily to gently clean your pores. the facial cleanser also performs as a deep cleansing oil for oily skin, from its cinnamon bark infusion which removes sebum. for a hydrating cleansing oil for sensitive skin, use a milder facial cleanser formula like the nutri:nectar gentle cleansing oil in emulsion.

The shampoo formula does not contain silicones and parabens, but is rich in vitamin F, glycerin complex, gentian extract (I know how it smells from Hermes perfume, its aroma cannot be traced right there). The texture transforms into an airy, voluminous foam with a pleasant citrus-woody note during foaming.
The cleansing oil is intended for the daily care of thin and oily hair, as well as for sensitive scalp, and is suitable for men. Qualitatively, but gently removes impurities, maintains the scalp in good condition, leaves a feeling of lightness and wonderful shine.

I don’t know where my husband managed to read that shampoo use it for men’s hair, but recently I complained that my shampoo was running out quickly, and he confessed on Skype on a business trip that he often uses it and enjoys it.RRRRRRRRRR !!!
I didn’t buy this product right away. the very name “oil” promised me oily, greasy and absolutely washable hair). It’s good that I was wrong.
Plastic bottle in 400 ml, but modern and stylish, with a convenient flexible dispenser. The shampoo itself is neither oil nor oil, the texture is an ordinary liquid consistency, which foams when in contact with water (in the photo the number of one pressing). By the way, there is little foam, but very soft and pleasant. I wash my hair twice and each time I need three clicks.I try to distribute it well over my hair and generally hold it longer because of this indescribable aroma! Floral citruses are incredibly uplifting! I would even wash my hair more often, just enjoy it again and again)! But more often I do not need to wash, everything is in my usual mode without changes (once every 2-3 days), even if it is “oil”. It’s a shame the hair doesn’t retain its fragrance until the next wash (.
The result is clean, soft and vibrant hair. Perfectly alive! The shampoo doesn’t make it straw, although I don’t use any conditioners or masks anymore. If I’m going to style them, then I rub oil or serum into my wet hair, and if not, then they just dry out in the air.
I didn’t measure my hair, I took a photo a couple of days ago. This is their actual length and condition. Left – without styling products, right – with Paul Mitchell serum. I dye my hair because there are gray-haired. It is upsetting, but not fatal. I am thinking of making a post about what I have dyed and dyed my hair with in the last 5-6 years.
The only product that Shu Uemura Art of Hair offers in addition to this shampoo is Essence Absolue Noirishing Protective Oil; it and Silk Bloom (green) damaged hair mask in the shopping plans.
And I also found out that I no longer need to order this brand online (I bought on feelunique), but you can go and buy: there are at least 3 salons in Stuttgart that exclusively sell their products (the price is on average 3-4 euros more expensive ).Hooray.
Cost: 38 euros for 400 ml
Rating: 5 + / 5
Preis: um 42 Euro in Dtl, um 38 Euro auf feelunique
Note: sehr gut
Would you take a chance?))
Würdet ihr das riskieren?))
Shampoo and mask for colored hair Shu Uemura Art of Hair Color Luster – review
Today I share my impressions of shampoo and mask from the series for colored hair Shu Uemura Art of Hair Color Luster .I don’t know why I ignored this Japanese brand for so long … Both products turned out to be excellent, and so much so that I repeated the shampoo as soon as the first bottle ran out 🙂 Details under the cut.
Line Shu Uemura Art of Hair Color Luster is aimed at preserving and prolonging the intensity of hair color after dyeing, as well as restoring damaged hair structure and giving it smoothness and shine.
Shampoo Shu Uemura Art of Hair Color Luster Sulfate Free Shampoo
Shampoo surprised me at all: it is very soft, sulfate-free, at the same time it foams remarkably the first time, on the second run you literally need a drop of shampoo, and it gives a whole mountain thick creamy foam.Does not tangle or dry out hair and scalp and cleanses well without washing out the paint. Shampoo of medium thickness with a fairly economical consumption, smells creamy-fruity, very pleasant and non-irritating.
Its composition is simply the softest: gentle surfactants, cuticle-smoothing silicones and polymers, moisturizers, salicylic acid plus herbal ingredients that help restore hair and prevent dandruff: vitamin E, rosehip oil and yellow gentian extract.
Hair after shampoo is washed off smooth and pleasant to the touch, and after drying – very soft and more voluminous, airy at the roots, shiny and flowing to the very ends. Unfortunately, I cannot assess its ability to preserve the shade after staining, tk. the dye always keeps well on my hair, but in terms of its caring properties and delicacy in relation to hair, this is an absolute must-have, so I gladly used two bottles of Shu Uemura Art of Hair Color Luster Sulfate Free Shampoo on a regular basis, occasionally alternating with other shampoos , and I’m going to buy it again as soon as my stocks of other shampoos are slightly reduced.
My rating: 5+

Mask Shu Uemura Art of Hair Color Luster Masque
The mask perfectly complements and enhances the effect of the shampoo, this is just a perfect pair 🙂 It consists of softeners, polymers, moisturizers, drops of silicone, enriched with rosehip oil, vitamin E, and yellow gentian extract.
She has the lightest texture: a loose, melting cream-gel of pale pink color with the smallest shining particles, and they do not remain on the hair, or are completely invisible. The aroma of the mask is as unobtrusive and pleasant as that of the shampoo. Here’s a beauty:
The manufacturer recommends applying it for 2-3 minutes, but I prefer to keep it at least 10, it seems to me that with longer exposure the effect of the mask is only better. When washing off, you can already feel how smooth and flowing the hair becomes, plus it noticeably enhances shine, makes them more obedient, elastic and moisturized, removes frizz. Its only drawback is uneconomic, at least my hair just “eats it up” at the moment, and there is always a temptation to apply more 🙂 Perhaps, one of the best hair masks that I have ever had.
