Can kids bring lunch boxes to school?

A list of ‘essentials’ was provided in the Government’s official guidance for school openings. Under last year’s government guidelines, it iwas recommended that students limit what they bring to school to just the school items that are absolutely necessary, including bags, hats, coats, books, stationery, mobile phones and, yes, lunch boxes.

Will school kitchens be open for lunch?

Lunch boxes will no doubt be a common sight (we especially love personalised ones!) school kitchens were open as long as they complied with legal requirements applying to the provision of food to pupils.

As the new school year approaches, so does the quest for finding the perfect lunchbox. My oldest child will be entering second grade this fall, and I’ve yet to find him a lunch box that checks all the boxes for me. It can’t leak, it has to keep warm food warm and cold food cold, it can’t squish fruits or veggies, it can’t make food soggy, and it has to look good enough that my children will be enthusiastic about actually eating their lunch. It also has to be sturdy, small enough to fit inside a backpack and can be easily wiped down and cleaned. Seems like an impossible task, doesn’t it?

I’m big on bento boxes because I love to compartmentalize food so it stays intact. This past school year, I would put bento boxes in brown paper sacks or small canvas bags for my son to bring to school–not very visually appealing! This school year, I want to find the perfect all-in-one lunch box that incorporates everything my kids need for the perfect lunch—or at least piece together a few sturdy accessories that will do the trick.

In my quest for the perfect fit, I’ve rounded up 20 lunch boxes and accessories that will make packing lunches during the school year a bit easier.

The Best Trader Joe’s Picks for Your Kids’ Lunchboxes

11 best kids lunch boxes and bento boxes for school in 2021

Believe it or not, back-to-school season is almost here, which means you may want to start thinking about preparing your child for the return to in-person learning. Though many schools don’t send out supply lists until later in the summer, one thing you can buy now is a lunch box to keep your kid’s food at a safe temperature and make it easy for them to transport everything. Below, we rounded up some top-rated kids lunch boxes, bento boxes and containers from popular brands like Hydro Flask, Simple Modern, Pottery Barn Kids and Thermos.

Top-rated kids lunch boxes and bags

Made with two layers of insulation and a fully lined liner, this lunch box from Hydro Flask is designed to keep food cold for hours, according to the brand. It has an interior band designed to hold utensils and an ice pack, and it comes in kid-friendly colors like Iris (a shade of purple), Grasshopper (a bright green) and Geranium (a bright red). On Hydro Flask’s website, the lunch box boasts a 4.9-star average rate from nearly 200 reviews.

This lunch bag from YETI uses the same rubber foam Coldcell insulation as many of its soft-sided coolers to keep food cold (though ice packs are sold separately). It’s equipped with a magnetic Thermo Snap closure to ensure a consistent temperature, and the size of the bag can be adjusted using its hook-and-loop grid. Available in five colors, the bag has a 4.4-star average rating from nearly 1,500 reviews on YETI’s website.

A popular pick on Amazon, this patterned lunch bag from Simple Modern has a 4.8-star average rating from more than 500 reviews. With a 4-liter capacity, the rectangular bag can hold sandwiches, snacks and more, and it’s triple-insulated to keep food fresh. Depending on your child’s preferences, there are dozens of patterns to choose from, including a fun unicorn pattern and a Mickey and Minnie Mouse one.

This iridescent lunch box from Target’s More Than Magic line is a relatively affordable option at $10. Designed to look like a unicorn, the insulated bag features an inner mesh pocket, an outer zip pocket and a water bottle pocket, plus a carrying handle to make it easy for your child to tote their lunch to and from the cafeteria.

A fun option for astronauts in training, this lunch box features an out-of-this-world galaxy pattern. According to the brand, the PVC-free lining is easy to clean, and the closed-cell foam insulation is designed to keep food cold. Unlike other lunch boxes, this one has two separate zippered compartments stacked on top of one another so snacks and drinks can stay separate from fruits, vegetables and sandwiches.

If your little one loves Batman, then they might be a fan of this lunch box from Pottery Barn Kids adorned with the superhero’s signature vehicle and Bat Signal. According to the brand, the lunch box is made without any harmful chemicals and has a molded interior that’s designed to be easy to clean. You can also customize the lunch box with your child’s name or initials for an added fee, and if they aren’t a fan of Batman, other fun designs include Star Wars and Marvel’s Avengers.

Best bento boxes and lunch containers for kids

Bento boxes and containers can keep your child’s food compartmentalized and prevent it all from amalgamating into a giant mess. Both can be used on its own or inside a lunch box — but since most bento boxes and containers are not insulated, it’s better to put them inside a lunch bag.

This highly rated bento box from Bentgo Kids has five compartments with ideal serving sizes for kids ages 3 to 7, and the tray is both microwave-safe and dishwasher-safe. Choose from a dozen designs, including Dinosaur, Safari and Mermaid Scales.

Another fun and highly rated bento box option, this one from Simple Modern also has five compartments — and when you don’t want to use them, the plastic compartments can be removed. The box itself snaps shut, and it comes in several different patterns, including Mickey Ears and Ice Cream Cone.

This bento box has three compartments designed to hold kid-sized food portions. According to the brand, it’s leakproof and both dishwasher- and freezer-safe, plus microwave-safe without the lid. If you want to create a matching set for your child, 3 Sprouts also makes a Lion Lunch Bag, Lion Sandwich Bags and Lion Snack Bags.

Designed by a mother for mothers, this dishwasher-safe two-piece set is made to be an eco-friendly alternative to plastic bags. It comes with a larger oval box to hold a sandwich and sides and a smaller cup for dipping sauces, dressings, yogurt or other mealtime additions.

If you prefer to meal prep at the beginning of the week, this bento box set comes with seven reusable containers, each of which has three compartments for snacks, sandwiches and more. The plastic containers are microwave-, freezer- and dishwasher-safe, but the brand says they’re not entirely leakproof, so it’s better to use them for solid foods that won’t spill. On Amazon, the Youngever Bento Lunch Boxes have a 4.7-star average rating from more than 1,100 reviews.

Assembling a lunch box for a student – 1 answers to Babyblog

Most schools have a long tradition of feeding students breakfast and sometimes lunch. However, not every child will enjoy the food from the school cafeteria, and it is possible to get hungry when getting up early and, which is not uncommon, after a long journey to school, it is possible much earlier than a big change. It is only natural that many parents are confused about what and when their children will eat before they return home. Some of them give the guys money to buy a snack in the school cafeteria, but the chances are high that the funds will be spent on harmful chips and soda. Therefore, those parents who are not sure about the quality of the school buffet menu or the conscientiousness of their children prefer to collect a lunch box for the child with a delicious and healthy breakfast every morning.

What can you put your child “with you”

In children, the need for carbohydrates is much higher than in adults, and with mental work, it increases even more. The most obvious and richest source of carbohydrates is bread, and therefore it is not bad if a bun, tortilla or a regular sandwich is in the student’s lunch box.

However, it is better to replace the classic sandwich with cheese or sausage with a sandwich of two pieces of bread with a filling between them – this way it will be more convenient for the child to hold it in his hands, and he will be able to satisfy hunger much faster. However, it is advisable to use whole grain bread, which contains more nutrients.

Cheese, a cutlet, a piece of fried liver are suitable as a filling, you can also add a tomato cut into rings, a lettuce or greens. Sausages usually contain a lot of spices and various chemical additives, and therefore are not useful for a growing body, but if parents allow their presence in the child’s diet, it is better to give preference to boiled or low-fat freshly smoked sausages.

Meat and dairy products

An equally important component of a school breakfast is proteins, because they are the main material that is involved in the construction of human tissues and organs. It is obvious that schoolchildren, whose body is constantly growing, are especially in need of this substance, with a lack of which the child’s physical development slows down, his resistance to disease decreases, and mental activity deteriorates.

As a source of animal protein in a student’s lunch box, you can put the already mentioned cutlet, or meat rolls (ham, diet sausage) with cream cheese and herbs inside, or just a piece of boiled or stewed meat fillet. Also, protein is the basis of dairy products – yogurt, cheese, a couple of curds will be an excellent addition to school breakfast.

Banana is the ideal fruit for school breakfast: it is rich in carbohydrates, quickly satisfies the feeling of hunger and also does not stain hands and textbook pages. You can also add an apple or a pear to your lunch box as an addition to a sandwich or pie, but they must be firm enough to sit for several hours without turning into porridge. For neat children, tangerines are suitable – they are conveniently eaten in slices, however, there is a risk of dripping juice into school uniforms or notebooks.

If a child has a sweet tooth, do not deny him the pleasure of eating chocolate – with intense mental stress, the glucose contained in it will bring nothing but benefit. But, keep in mind that only dark chocolate is useful, preferably bitter – it has a large percentage of cocoa, as opposed to milk or white. As for chocolate bars, despite the fact that they are rich in calories and quickly satisfy hunger, they do not fully satisfy the body’s need for glucose, but with age, the habit of eating “sweet” threatens to turn into extra pounds and problems with metabolism.

“On a tooth”

Breakfast is breakfast, but sometimes hunger makes the child literally grab food on the run. Of course, this is not the most preferable option for a school snack, but it can also be foreseen when making up a lunch box.Healthy dried fruits, nuts, crackers from whole grains, muesli from grains, nuts and dried fruits will help you to quickly and efficiently quench your appetite at the wrong time.

Fortunately, the modern variety of various drinks in factory-made portion packs reduces the problem with drinking for the student to nothing: bags of fruit or vegetable juice, milkshake, drinking yogurt are suitable (if the lunch box is able to keep cold or has a container with ice in it).

Delicious “harmfulness”, which is better to abstain from

Of course, most schoolchildren would prefer that their breakfast consisted only of them, but parents should better not be led by their children and avoid being in the lunch box:

– sweet soda that will not quench your thirst, but will “kill” your appetite;

– chocolate bars, sweet cookies or filled muffins (as a rule, they are very high in calories, contain preservatives and harmful flavors) – homemade pies can be an alternative, and in the absence of time, ready-made baked goods, for example, croissants or cheesecakes;

– chips and crackers with a huge amount of salt and enhancers of taste and aroma – they can be easily replaced with nuts and dried fruits, or you can offer the student fresh fruit as a delicacy.

Choosing a lunch box

Of course, in addition to the set of products prepared for the student for breakfast, it is also of great importance where and how this set will be stored during the day. A high-quality lunch box – a convenient and light container for breakfast – can provide food with an appetizing appearance, original taste and useful properties.

Choosing a lunch box for a student is not such an easy task as it might seem at first glance. On the one hand, it must be durable, on the other, light and compact, because in addition to sandwiches, the child must also bring textbooks and notebooks to school. It is also extremely important that the lid of the lunch box is airtight, but at the same time can be easily opened without much effort on the part of the child.

In addition, since children themselves are primarily concerned with design, the ideal school lunch box should also be trendy. And keep in mind that your child knows better than you which portfolio, bag and lunch box are at the height of fashion in a given city, school and class, and therefore give him the opportunity to independently choose a drawing and design. You can even let the schoolboy decorate the box with paint or markers. The main thing is that it has the name of your child.

If you plan to give your child food that requires special storage conditions for school, it is better to choose a lunch box with a reusable cooling bag so that breakfast does not spoil. Or just make sure the container will fit a frozen bottle of water.

Of course, the daily preparation of food for the lunch box will require additional effort and time on the part of parents.Nevertheless, this responsibility should not be neglected – after all, the health and well-being of the child is at stake. And what kind of academic performance can we talk about on an empty stomach? Moreover, the competent organization of the schoolchild’s meals, in addition to the momentary, also has an important long-term effect: from childhood, the child will get used to take care of himself and lead a correct lifestyle and will thank you more than once for this!

Lunch boxes for schoolchildren and adults

Lunch boxes for schoolchildren and adults are such small suitcases with food that in American films mothers give their children to school with them. And not only for children. Office workers, workers, police officers, in a word, everyone who has caring wives, every morning receives a suitcase with a strategic set of products, which they open during their lunch break and enjoy homemade cookies, sandwiches with their favorite sausages, fruits, juices. By the way, planning lunch boxes can save a family budget a lot. One school breakfast can cost 2-3 times more than one home lunch box, and lunch in a cafeteria or cafe at work is even more expensive. So figure out how much you can help your family by thinking about nutrition, even when your loved ones are away from home.

Of course, the daily collection of one or even several lunch boxes is an additional concern. At first – perhaps for two to three weeks – it may seem like a burden to you, but in just a month you will be involved in this process, and you will even feel pleasure from it. In addition, you will gain experience and will think over the lunch box automatically. Another point: not all school canteens or office cafes are expensive and terrible, you can trust them, of course, in this case, a lunch box can be an addition to the main daily meals for schoolchildren or adults, insurance in case the child gets hungry again. In this case, it will take less time to collect the lunch box.

Do not forget – no matter how troublesome it may seem to you, homemade food has a number of undeniable advantages, for which you can suffer some inconvenience, sacrifice a few minutes in the morning. First, homemade meals are tastier and more nutritious than fast food or school canteens. Secondly, as already mentioned, they are cheaper. Thirdly, homemade food is prepared with high quality and with love, and a caring mother or wife always takes into account the tastes, habits and state of health of their household members.

What are lunch boxes and thermoses

The first thing you will need, of course, in a lunch box is a container where you can pack all the food without worrying about the food mixing and turning into porridge. Today, there is a wide variety of such containers on sale – in different sizes and configurations, colors and inner section arrangements. But if a simple, securely closing plastic container is enough for your child, then the husband, who works in shifts for one or two days, may need a cooler container, that is, a lunch box with a cooling system that guarantees the safety of food for a certain time. You should not buy children’s lunch boxes for a serious amount, because the maximum life expectancy (regardless of the cost, by the way) is one school year. During this time, a lunch box can break, crack, get lost, and get bored more than once. The only thing that should justify the money spent is high-quality thermoses that cannot burst, crack, lose temperature, burn, break when dropped or kicked by a promising young football player. If you purchase the thermos separately from the lunch box, make sure it fits in the container.

By the way, lunch boxes don’t have to be plastic containers. They can also be hermetically sealed bags made of dense fabric, with many insulated pockets and pockets for napkins, toothpicks, forks, bags of salt and pepper.

Vacuum flasks are also different, for different needs. There are miniature narrow thermos flasks, the volume of which is no more than 500 ml – these are two glasses of tea. There are wide-mouthed thermoses, with a wide neck and a flask. For daily use, wide thermoses of small volume are suitable, literally for 1 portion, it is convenient to take soups or main courses in them. For an adult man with a good appetite, leaving for a daily shift, such a thermos will not be enough – its volume should be large. By the way, wide-mouthed thermoses are more convenient to wash.

There are also thermoses that keep low temperatures – it is convenient to keep chilled yoghurts, milk, fruit salads, puddings, jellies, etc. in them. If your household does not have such a thermos, and cool, not sour milk or chilled tea will come in handy for school lunch, use the method of American housewives: take a sports bottle for drinks, pour 1/3 of milk, tea or other drink into it, put in the freezer overnight. In the morning, just top up the bottle and put it in your lunch box. Within a few hours, the frozen portion of the drink will melt and at the same time cool the refilled portion of the drink. Place foods next to the cold bottle that the extra cold will not hurt – yoghurts, salads, chocolate, vegetables or fruits.

Disposable dishes and bags

In addition to lunch boxes and thermoses, you will need disposable plastic containers with tight-fitting lids and plastic bags, preferably with tight fasteners.Stock up on such containers of different sizes: containers are suitable for salads, sauces, yoghurts, puddings, bags with zip fasteners are suitable for sandwiches, bread, slices of vegetables and fruits, sweets. Disposable plastic dishes can be washed and reused (wash thoroughly and immediately after they return home), but in which case it is not a pity to part with it.

How to keep food hot

If for some time food can be kept cold and without the help of special thermoses and coolers, then it is simply impossible to keep food hot without a thermos.Unless you have a good, reliable thermos for this purpose, you will only need to prepare lunchbox foods that are tasty at room temperature. But if you have this useful and convenient thing, your household can prepare for a bright variety of hot home meals.

To keep food hot in a thermos, it must be reheated in the morning. The food itself can be prepared in the evening, but must be reheated in the morning. Liquid dishes such as soups need to be boiled on the stove for 5 minutes. In the meantime, warm the thermos itself with hot water: fill it to the top with hot, but not boiling water, screw the lid back on and leave it there for a few minutes. When the soup has boiled and cooled slightly, pour the water from the thermos and pour the soup into it. Do not overfill the thermos, make sure that the liquid level in it reaches the recommended level (it is usually located on the flask). Screw the cover back on carefully. Other dishes such as spaghetti with meat sauce, stews, casseroles, etc. it is better to warm it up in a microwave oven or a double boiler, it is also recommended to warm a thermos in the way described above.

Plan a time to collect lunch boxes

Never put together lunch boxes for schoolchildren and adults in a hurry. Allocate about 20 minutes for this activity. As a rule, food is packed in the morning, but you can help yourself by thinking ahead of time, for example, in the evening, about the location of all products in containers or bags. Ideally, plan lunch boxes for the entire week so that your children and adult family members always have a variety of tasty and healthy food for lunch.

Please be aware that there are certain requirements for a healthy diet for school-age children. According to medical standards, they require a certain amount of essential substances, trace elements and vitamins. Find out these norms for the age of your children (perhaps taking into account certain diseases, allergies) and take them as a basis. However, never dismiss your children’s desires. Include in lunch boxes the food they ask for. If the older son likes cheese sandwiches and the younger son wants strawberry yogurt, supplement their personal containers with these foods.

Just to be on the safe side, have on hand a list of foods that you can quickly fill your lunch boxes with. In the evening, you can pack peeled vegetables – carrots, celery stalks, broccoli – in bags with a fastener, and keep such bags in the refrigerator. Sandwiches sandwiches layered with eggs, ham, tuna or chicken will even taste better if left in the refrigerator for several hours – the flavors will mix and give a richer taste. Canned fruits, yogurt can also be placed in small containers in advance and left in the refrigerator overnight. The sports bottles are one-third filled with milk and placed in the freezer. Even hot meals can be set aside in advance or poured into a separate dish exactly in the amount required for 1-2 servings (according to the number of family members who are preparing lunch boxes). In the morning, all that remains is to warm up the thermoses and put the prepared foods in lunch boxes for schoolchildren and adults. Don’t forget to put in plastic forks and spoons for your main course or main course.

Finally about mayonnaise …

Not all mothers approve of the presence of mayonnaise in salads or sandwiches prepared for children.
