Why Sarah Jessica Parker Is Ashamed That She Wore a Black Dress for her wedding to Matthew Broderick

Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick are one of Hollywood’s long-lasting couples. The pair have been married for 24 years and keep their relationship away from the spotlight. However, many of their fans might recall that Parker wore a black dress during her wedding to Broderick. The Sex and the City star shared why the outfit choice is one of her biggest regrets.

Neither Sarah Jessica Parker nor Matthew Broderick wanted an elaborate wedding

Parker and Broderick met in the early 1990s. At the time, she had ended a long-term relationship with Robert Downey, Jr. The pair connected through Parker’s brothers, Pippin and Toby. In 1992, the couple went on their first date. From then on, they remained together while working on their acting careers.

In 1997, Broderick and Parker decided to get married. However, neither of them yearned for a grand wedding day. The event took place at a New York synagogue, and had about 100 guests. Many of the guests didn’t even know the wedding was happening until they arrived. Parker admitted in 2006 that the impromptu wedding wasn’t the best move.

“I wore black on my wedding day, and I really regret that,” Parker said to Marie Claire. “I was too embarrassed to get married in white, and both Matthew [Broderick] and I were reluctant to have people pay so much attention to us, which is ridiculous because that’s when you can relish the attention when it’s natural. We treated it like it was a big party on a Monday night, and I regret it.”

Why Sarah Jessica Parker didn’t want to ‘spend any time’ looking for a wedding dress

Although she regrets it now, Parker said wearing a black dress made her feel different than a traditional bride. While she’s always loved fashion, the actor admittedly didn’t shop for her clothing until the very last minute. According to Bazaar, Parker went to a local store to buy the gown she wore to marry Broderick.

“Oh, I wish it was because I was badass,” she said during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live. “I just was too embarrassed to spend any time looking for a wedding dress. There was a store that I liked that I knew, and I just went and got whatever they had hanging.”

What the ‘Sex and the City’ star would do different if she had another wedding

Despite her “embarrassing” fashion statement, Parker and Broderick have stayed married for two decades. The pair also share three children– James Wilkie Broderick, 19, and twins Marion and Tabitha Broderick, 12.

Since their 1997 wedding, Parker has said she would have another wedding to make up for the black dress debacle. In an interview with Martha Stewart Weddings, she shared that she would take a page out of Carrie Bradshaw’s handbook and wear a designer dress.

“If I were getting married today, I’d likely wear cream, just to have that bridal experience,” Parker said. “Now I would want my dress to have an Oscar de la Renta feel, pockets below the waist, a very fitted bodice, a huge skirt, in taffeta or duchess satin. That silhouette appeals to me because it’s old-fashioned yet can look very modern.”

Sarah Jessica Parker’s Wedding Dress Was So Untraditional — Here’s Why

In the first Sex and the City movie, Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw offered up two stunningly iconic bridal looks — the first being an understated skirt suit she scored at a vintage store and the second, a super-voluminous Vivienne Westwood gown. True to her character’s iconic style, both picks were rather untraditional, but Sarah Jessica’s Parker’s real wedding dress — the style she wore to say “I do” to husband Matthew Broderick — is the most unconventional gown she’s ever worn down the aisle. If you’re looking to take an untraditional route when it comes to your own bridal style, prepare to take note from Parker.

It’s no secret Parker was a fashion icon in the ’90s (and still remains one today). She perfectly infused her street style and red carpet outfits with unexpected elements, and she certainly wasn’t afraid of a rocking a more daring look. That’s why Parker’s choice to walk down the aisle wearing an off-the-rack Morgane Le Fay dress seemed like a fitting pick for the actor. Rather than a classic white hue, Parker opted for black, which paired perfectly with the dress’ thin spaghetti straps and tiered, ruffled skirt.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Parker didn’t intend on making such a statement with her look — in fact, she hoped it would fly under the radar. In an interview with Marie Claire back in 2006, Parker opened up the reasoning behind her unconventional wedding dress pick. “I was too embarrassed to get married in white, and both Matthew and I were reluctant to have people pay so much attention to us,” she shared. “Which is ridiculous, because that’s when you can relish the attention, when it’s natural. We treated it like it was a big party on a Mon. night, and I regret it.”

Although Parker’s dress has remained one of the most-talked-about celebrity dresses of all time, the actor would take a different route if she walked down the aisle now. “If I were getting married today, I’d likely wear cream, just to have that bridal experience,” she shared with Martha Stewart Weddings.

“Now, I would want my dress to have an Oscar de la Renta feel, pockets below the waist, a very fitted bodice, a huge skirt, in taffeta or duchesse satin. That silhouette appeals to me because it’s old fashioned yet can look very modern.”

Parker and Broderick started dating in the ’90s and officially tied the knot five years later, on May 19, 1997, in a very small, intimate ceremony. All 100 attendees thought they were there for a party — how’s that for a low-key affair?

Though Parker’s unconventional bridal look is her biggest wedding regret, it’s nonetheless one that paved the way for untraditional brides. Parker made a convincing case for going against long-held wedding customs, and the actor’s unique pick still continues to serve as bridal inspiration today.

If black is too stark of a pick to wear on your big day but you still want something unique, there are a handful of other ways you can lean into the untraditional trend. Whether it’s picking a more unusual silhouette or foregoing a dress entirely and opting for a suit instead, channeling Parker’s unique bridal style is easier than you’d think. Sarah Jessica Parker’s Unconventional Bridal Look

Sarah Jessica Parker’s wedding look is one that may divide opinion but what we love that she went with her heart and didn’t pressure herself into following tradition.

The Sex and the City actress caught the world off guard when photos of her big day with Matthew Broderick emerged. Why? Well, because she chose to wear an unconventional black gown!

The story goes that SJP was so keen to stay under the radar on her wedding day, she opted to wear a simple black dress in an attempt to keep nosey parkers from speculating about her nuptials.

What she did instead though, was draw even more attention that expected with the off-the-rail Morgane Le Fay piece which she wore to her modest May wedding.

That’s right, there was no custom-made gown for this bride when she said ‘I do’ back in 1997; instead she walked into a store and chose her dress from the collection displayed on the shop floor.

No doubt SJP could have had her pick of designers back then so we kinda love that she was so casual about the whole thing… even though she later regretted it!

‘I was too embarrassed to get married in white, and both Matthew and I were reluctant to have people pay so much attention to us. Which is ridiculous, because that’s when you can relish the attention, when it’s natural,’ Parker told Marie Claire m

‘We treated it like it was a big party on a Monday night, and I regret it,’ she said of her spaghetti-strapped dress with tiered, ruffled skirt detail.

‘If I were getting married today, I’d likely wear cream, just to have that bridal experience,’ she told Martha Stewart Weddings.

‘Now, I would want my dress to have an Oscar de la Renta feel, pockets below the waist, a very fitted bodice, a huge skirt, in taffeta or duchesse satin.’

‘That silhouette appeals to me because it’s old fashioned yet can look very modern.’

Maybe for a vow renewal, eh SJP?

The “Sex and the City” actress wore a design by Morgane Le Fay but in a 2016 appearance on “Watch What Happens Live,” she told the host Andy Cohen she actually regrets her choice.

“Oh, I wish it was because I was badass,” she said. “I just was too embarrassed to spend any time looking for a wedding dress. There was a store that I liked that I knew, and I just went and got whatever they had hanging.”

If she were to go back, the actress said she would definitely wear white instead.

“I’d wear a beautiful, proper wedding dress, like I should have worn that day,” she said.

Kristen Bell married Dax Shepard in 2013 and skipped a dress altogether, opting to wear a black top and pants instead.

The star of “The Good Place” paired her simple all-black look with a statement necklace, as she shared in an Instagram post in 2018.

In an interview with Metro, Quinn’s wedding planner Lisa Lafferty said the reality star decided to wear two custom dresses by the same designer.

Lafferty said Quinn paired her custom dresses with Christian Louboutin heels that the fashion designer signed on the bottom.

The actress and model accessorized her long-sleeve black midi dress with boots and a small bouquet of flowers.

Sevigny and the art director Sinisa Mackovic got married in March 2020 and welcomed their son, Vanja, less than two months after their wedding day.

“I think there’s a lot about these that are conventional silhouettes. I’ve got no business designing wedding dresses, I think that would be fraudulent, and diminishing the people who have been doing it for a really long time,” Parker told Women’s Wear Daily.
“That’s serious business. People work years and years and years to build those businesses, and have to understand draping, foundations. That’s a massive undertaking. I’m not a designer and I don’t have those skills, but I have ideas and dreams. I knew I wanted something that felt modern and felt [like] there was life in it beyond that day,”

It’s no surprise that the Sex and the city’s star’s line of wedding gowns isn’t exactly following the norm. Parker married her husband, actor Matthew Broderick in 1997 in a black gown from Morgane Le Fay dress.

“There was a store that I liked that I knew, and I just went and got whatever they had hanging.” The actress told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live in 2016.

When it came to designing items for the range, Sarah was determined that brides should be able to wear the ensembles again.
“The intent is they should be usable outside of that special occasion. Whether you’re the person walking down the aisle, or you’re attending, these are all pieces that should be relevant in your closet,” she told WWD. “There are some pieces that feel more decadent and more specifically bridal. There’s no law saying they’re not appropriate for many other important occasions as well.”

Prices for the items range from that $295 bodysuit to $2,395 for a stunning embroidered gown, while sizes go from zero to 14.
Alongside the clothing range, Gilt will be launching 15 styles from Sarah’s SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker footwear collection which range in price from $350 to $485, with the items offering brides the perfect head-to-toe wedding look.

Style icon Parker regrets black wedding dress

Sarah Jessica Parker’s “Sex and The City” character, Carrie Bradshaw, had more than her fair share of wedding snafus in last summer’s hit movie adaptation of the HBO series — but does Sarah Jessica have any regrets about her own wedding with husband Matthew Broderick?

The actress appears on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar for its March issue, where she revealed there are five things she can’t live without.

“My son! My husband! Food! Oh, fashion? I don’t know. A good bra?” she told the mag.

As for a something that the actress might be able to live without, Parker said she still regrets the decision to wear a black wedding dress in 1997.

“James Wilkie’s teacher is getting married, and he said, ‘Do you think she will be wearing black?’” the actress said, referring to her and Broderick’s 7-year-old son. “I said, ‘No! I can almost assure you.’ Then he said, ‘Do you still regret it?’ and I said, ‘Yes, I still regret it.’”

At the time, Parker said she wore black in order to not drawn attention to herself, but if she and Broderick ever renew their wedding vows, the 43-year-old said she already knows what she’ll wear.

“White it up. I’d wear a beautiful, proper wedding dress, like I should have worn that day,” she said.

Another part of her life that she could do without now and then, is the attention she receives living in New York after playing such a famous Big Apple-loving girl, especially when the “Sex and The City” bus tours spot her on the streets of the city.

“There are times when it’s totally terrific,” she said of the popular fan tours. “And there are times when I’m like, ‘Oh, God, I’d better run in the other direction.’ Especially when I’m with my son.”

The actress also revealed some of her tactics for surviving life as a celebrity, telling the mag, “Don’t surround yourself with bodyguards and SUVs, and return everything you are loaned in the shape in which you received it. Return jewelry, return bags, clean out the bags!”

As for New York’s newest set of famous residents — the characters from The CW’s “Gossip Girl” — Sarah Jessica said she has some concerns regarding the show’s racy content, although she wasn’t sure about the details of the show.

Black wedding dress | House of brides

Black has never been associated with a wedding image. However, brides who want to look original at their wedding are not afraid to experiment and buy a black wedding dress. But when choosing such an outfit, they face many questions, which we will try to answer in this article.

Where did the fashion for black wedding dresses come from?

Sarah Jessica Parker said in 1997 that she wanted her marriage to Matthew Broderick to go unnoticed. Therefore, instead of the traditional white wedding dress, the actress wore black. This moment could not but be taken into account by world designers, and since then a black wedding dress has been present in almost every fashion show.

What jewelry goes with a black wedding dress?

Black wedding dress goes well with crystals, pearls and diamonds. You can wear a necklace and earrings made of these jewelry, and in some cases a shiny diadem, a diamond brooch and a veil embroidered with pearls will look appropriate with a black dress.

It is desirable that the bridal bouquet stand out brightly against the background of a black dress. If in your wedding dress, besides black, there is another color, then you can pick up a bouquet to match it. For example, a bouquet of red roses will go well with red bridal shoes and jewelry. A black and white bouquet will look good, it will make the bride’s image softer and more romantic.

What makeup would go with a black wedding dress?

If you do not adhere to a gothic look, then you should not use bright colors in your makeup. For example, black arrows or red lipstick. They will add a darker tone to your style, and the vamp woman looks completely out of place with the bride. Try to use soft, natural shades.

Which veil goes with a black wedding dress?

With a black wedding dress, it is advisable to wear a black veil or not cover your head at all. If your outfit contains white shades, then you can choose a white veil trimmed with black lace.

Black wedding dress pros:

1.Black color visually makes the figure slimmer.

2. No stains will be visible on a black dress if you get dirty.

90,000 Black wedding dress – trend or delirium?

Perplexity, delight, surprise, interest – what will be your reaction to the offer to try on a black wedding dress? At first glance, such an unconventional color of a dress for a wedding ceremony is a challenge to the established rules and a rebellious mood of the bride. But is it really so? In this article, YesYes will tell you where the new trend comes from and which celebrity chose black for their wedding. And also you will see many, many photos of beautiful, incredible, luxurious black wedding dresses. And who knows if you will fall in love with this color!

A bit of history

Many believe that black was introduced into wedding fashion Vera Wong.

In case that name doesn’t mean anything to you, let’s clarify: Wong is currently the most famous wedding dress designer in the world and dresses celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian and Chelsea Clinton.

In fact, black wedding dresses were worn by brides centuries ago in different cultures. For example, in Europe, brides could choose any color they liked and most often wore their best dress, regardless of color or shade. Queen Victoria began the fashion for the white wedding dress when she dressed in white for her ceremony in 1840. White dresses became a fashionable luxury that only the elite could afford: they were expensive and quickly lost their neat appearance.

After World War II, white wedding dress became an affordable and priority choice for middle-income people. Nevertheless, black wedding dresses were still worn by brides, but more often by those who have recently lost a loved one.

Interestingly, in Spain, Catholic brides wore black because it symbolized their dedication to marriage until their death.

Romantic, isn’t it?

However, at the end of the 19th century, black acquired a very negative connotation and was mainly associated with death and mourning.Later, it became a huge taboo for the mother of the groom or the bride, as it would mean regretting the marriage or the choice of a spouse.

But the madness had to end! Today black is considered the king of all colors, and, of course, black outfits remain the most elegant and sophisticated for both men and girls.

It was just a matter of time: the modern bride rejected the cliché “only white” and let a whole rainbow of colors into wedding fashion.

So, in 2010, Vera Wong’s exquisite collection of white wedding dresses was adorned with beautiful black details and was waiting for the verdict. And just one black wedding dress caused an incredible reaction. And already in 2012, the designer stunned everyone with a line of black wedding dresses! Meters of black organza, soft tulle, provocative lace and stunning color combinations were perfect examples of the luxury and beauty of black.

Should we expect that in the near future the black wave will cover the island of wedding fashion? Not at all. Despite the fact that a black wedding dress is a bold fashionable solution, and some of the items are absolute masterpieces, it will take us many more years, and possibly several centuries, to begin to perceive black without prejudice.Mainly because of the association with mourning and sadness, but also because, by nature, people are more prone to light shades and beautiful stories about what they symbolize: purity, beauty and virginity.

On the other hand, there is no doubt that more and more brides will meet who are ready to surprise others with their non-standard choice of wedding color. And not at all because surprise is their goal. But because they love this color! “Your day is your rules”!
