My EPIC Roger Rabbit Costume!!! : 6 Steps

This is where you really have to get creative and hope your good at designing and cutting a sewing and being all around creative!! i don’t wanna give out all my secrets but if you want help just ask!!

To start i cut out the basic shape of the head. sewed it up. cut a slit in the back for where your head goes in and flipped it inside out! fill it with fluff and make sure it looks like the shape you want!

Then add the nose. i cut a round piece and sewed it to the middle of the head. i cut a slit sideways and sew it from the back to make it seamless. fill the with fluff and make sure it looks good!

Now here’s where you really gotta be creative….making the mouth and tongue….i sewed on some pieces to the front and added a tongue and a the same for the red nose! i used red felt and some of the pink fabric for the tongue! and sewed it on! Don’t forget to add a big white tooth! i just took some of the fur and sewed it inside out so the inside faced out to look like a tooth and sewed in to the head!

Add some whiskers. ..i used some black jewelry wire and put a piece of hard foam inside the nose to hold the wires.

For the eyes you can used any sort of curved plastic…i used some from a set of headlights i got at my work…i work at an auto body shop so they were being replaced. i tinted some clear a hint of blue…seam sealed the edges and airbrushed some crazy crooked eyes!! then i glued them to the front and cut out the fabric so i can see out the eyes!

Lastly the Ears! i sewed so big ears out of the faux fur…sewed a peice of the pink fabric i used for the feet in the middle of them! unfolded some coat hangers to make the ears stand up and filled them with more fluff!! as for attaching them to the head it was rather complicated!! so be creative! i used more thick foam…the pink stuff for insulation found at your local menards or home depot!

Fill the cheeks, top of the head and mouth with fluff and try it on…if you need to make adjustments which I’m sure you will…i did numerous time!! its easiest to take out the fluff, make you adjustments and refill. …Repeat til your head looks like how you want!

Find a cheap orangeish red wig and cut out a piece for the tuft of hair on the top of the head…i cut a slit in the top and hot glued it into the head!! how you should have yourself a Roger Rabbit head!

Noir detective with famous cartoon characters ?! Is this really possible ?! Yes, it is possible. In 1988, Robert Zemeckis and Walt Disney Studios released a unique blockbuster that breathed new life into the Western multindustry and was the first step on the path of the previously discouraged Walt Disney to its current global domination. This brilliant, epochal picture was called “Who Framed Roger Rabbit.”

The Roger Rabbit concept was so unusual and so insane that it could not have been born within the walls of a huge corporation.And she was not born there. The story of the film that revived Walt Disney began with the book Who Censored Roger Rabbit ?, written by science fiction writer and humorist Gary K. Wolfe alone, without corporate supervision.

According to Wolfe’s recollections, he really wanted to come up with something that no one else had ever written. At a certain point, the writer decided to combine the three main hobbies of his childhood – comics, classic cartoons and books and the investigation of real crimes. But how to do that? One day, Wolfe was watching cartoons on TV, and he noticed an advertisement for children’s candy and drinks.In these videos, the drawn characters explained to real children the delights of new sweets, and the kids were not at all surprised that they were talking with living drawings. A routine publicity stunt – however, it inspired Wolfe to come up with a world in which drawn cartoon and comic book characters live on a par with ordinary people. They go to work (where they are filmed for cartoons or photographed for comics), fall in love, intrigue, and even become victims and criminals.

Gradually, in Wolfe’s head and on paper, a noir detective story about the comic book character Roger Rabbit (in fact, Roger Rabbit is the name and surname), who hires a private detective Eddie Valiant to find out why the rabbit is denied a promotion, then is in the publication of the “solo” comic.Soon after, Valiente has to investigate the murder of Roger, who may have finished off his boss Rocco de Grisi, co-owner of a comic book publishing house, before his death.

We will not describe all the twists and turns of Wolfe’s novel – stories for adults with children’s comic characters. Let’s just say that it was both insane and gripping narrative, which deserved not only reading, but also a large-scale adaptation.

When, January 1, 1981 “Who Censored Roger Rabbit?” appeared on the shelves, the rights to its adaptation have already been bought by the Walt Disney Corporation.This was done on the orders of Ron Miller, Walt Disney’s son-in-law, who was chairman of the board of Walt Disney Productions at the time. There were many complaints about Miller as a leader, but no one could say that the top manager was holding on to decrepit traditions and was afraid to experiment.

It was Miller who created Disney Channel, approved Tim Burton’s first animated opuses “Vincent” and “Frankenweenie”, and agreed to finance the early CG blockbuster “Tron”. Was Miller’s idea and the label Touchstone Pictures, invented for the release of films for adults and older teens based on Walt Disney (the main studio label was intended only for children’s and family releases).Who Censored Roger Rabbit was, for Miller’s taste, the perfect material for this label.

By that time, Disney people had a rich experience of connecting actors and animated series in the frame. The young Walt Disney experimented with this technology, and in the following decades, the studio released many “combined” short and full-length films. In particular, we can recall the 1964 film musical “Mary Poppins”, which is considered one of the best Hollywood performances for children.However, in these projects, the interaction of the two worlds was relatively short-lived, and these were almost always children’s comedies that did not require much realism and persuasiveness. Roger Rabbit was a detective story for adults, where cartoon characters and real-life characters coexisted throughout the story. It was a completely different amount of work and much more stringent requirements for the creators of graphics, game shooting and special effects.

But the eyes are afraid, but the hands are doing, and the studio has begun filming.Jeffrey Price and Peter Seeman were recruited to write the script, who had just finished work on the spy comedy Cloak, starring Robert Hayes from Airplane and Margot Kidder from Superman. Since the case was in 1982, and “Cloak” was released in 1983, Disney producers did not yet know that the picture would fail at the box office and be trampled by critics – primarily for a mediocre script. Fortunately, Roger Rabbit came out much better.

From the outset, it was decided that Price and Seeman would not only adapt, but almost completely revise Wolfe’s book.Her action was mainly associated with comic characters, and Disney, of course, were more suited to cartoon characters. Indeed, the film could include the famous Disney creations like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck as minor and episodic characters.

Also, the Disney bosses decided that their industry needed to be portrayed in a more positive and less cynical light than it was portrayed in Wolfe’s book. True, the top managers did not want to deviate far from the noir spirit of the original.After all, this was the main charm of the novel. But, as they joked in the Soviet “Crocodile”, they needed “kinder Shchedrins, and such Gogols that they would not touch us.” Actually, Miller bought the rights to “Roger Rabbit” in order to prevent competitors from intercepting the novel and not using the film adaptation as a veiled “run over” to the Walt Disney studio, which was already going through difficult times.

When director Robert Zemeckis found out what an amazing porridge the Disney people are making, he immediately offered his services.However, Zemeckis was directing two failed comedies at the time, I Wanna Hold Your Hand and Used Cars, and no one in Hollywood was eager to work with him. Moreover, he could not be entrusted with a very complex and expensive project. The studio tried to hire Briton Terry Gilliam from the Monty Python troupe, who at that time released the fantastic movie “Time Bandits”, but the director refused “Roger Rabbit”, as he was afraid of the technical puzzle of the rental, which Zemeckis, on the contrary, “turned on”.Later, Gilliam more than once regretted his laziness.

The main technological feature of the film was to be the constant interaction of cartoon characters with real objects. For example, a drawn character can break a plate, wave a cigar, or hit a cardboard box when falling. This was the only way to “prove” to the audience from frame to frame that cartoons really live together with people in the same physical space. To show that this is in principle possible, a small demo was created at the studio, on which Darell van Sitters, an aspiring Disney specialist and animator of the Fox and the Dog cartoon, who later became the creative director of the animation division of Warner Brothers, worked as an animator.

Van Sitters’ material looked impressive and inspiring, but the studio soon had no time for Roger Rabbit. The internal Disney crisis escalated, and in 1984 Ron Miller was removed from office in a corporate conspiracy led by Walt’s nephew Roy Disney. The reasons for the suspension were predominantly financial, but the conspirators, among other things, were not satisfied with the relatively poor quality of Disney releases and Miller’s excessive interest in experiments, which sometimes brought only losses.The board of directors wanted the studio to focus again on family and children’s films, as well as on the production of full-length cartoons.

With the latter, the Disney people were in big trouble. The studio was undergoing a painful generational change. Walt Disney-fostered veterans were retiring or dying, while youngsters and middle-aged animators considered the studio atmosphere “musty” and looked to the side. Some went to other companies, while others created a new business for themselves. In professional terms, Disney training was still considered the best, but it was increasingly perceived as preparation for a future independent life in the arts.The same Tim Burton, not taking root among the Disney people, went into game directing.

Walt Disney needed fresh, exciting projects to keep the remaining masters and attract new people. But instead of them, under Miller, the animators received only persistent and not unfounded rumors that the studio could completely abandon the animation division. They say that so many wonderful tapes were created before that they can be exploited for decades without getting involved in the dreary and not always profitable creation of new cartoons.

When Michael Eisner from Paramount Studios, who had never done animation before, was invited to replace Miller, it was perceived as a sign of the apocalypse. The animators became even more disheartened when, in 1985, after the rolling failure of the dark fantasy cartoon Black Cauldron, they were evicted from a building on the main Disney campus, which was purposely built for animation production, and moved to a remote former warehouse.It seemed that the studio was thus slowly and sadistically shaking off what had previously been the symbol and pride of the Walt Disney Corporation.

In reality, however, the forced relocation was not the beginning of the end, but the beginning of the Disney renaissance. And Roger Rabbit played a key role in this. Towards the end of Miller’s reign, the project was shelved for financial reasons, but it was revived under Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg, who, under Eisner’s leadership, led the work on feature-length films and animation films.

Roger Rabbit has a new lease on life as a result of the fascination with Steven Spielberg. The leading Hollywood director and producer was ready to organize work on a unique tape, if the Disney people give him creative control – of course, within the agreed budget. Katzenberg and Eisner agreed on a lot to release a picture of Steven Spielberg. True, the $ 50 million of the proposed budget was too much for them. But when Spielberg’s team squeezed the budget to $ 30 million, Disney signed a contract.Among other things, for the new bosses of the studio, a fictional film with animated inserts was more understandable than a hand-drawn full-length cartoon from start to finish.

Taking on “Roger Rabbit”, Spielberg attracted Robert Zemeckis, who was no longer a loser, but the director of the hits “Romance with a Stone” and “Back to the Future.” Initially, Spielberg wanted to hire Gremlins director Joe Dante, who was considered a better specialist in special effects than Zemeckis. But Dante has already agreed to stage the fantastic comedy Inner Space.Zemeckis was a big enthusiast of Roger Rabbit, and he had a clear vision of what the picture should be.

Wolfe’s book and early drafts are set in contemporary America. Zemeckis announced that the action should be transferred to post-war America – in the era of classic noir. This made the film more stylish, “timeless” (cinema about today often quickly becomes outdated, and Zemeckis wanted to create a long-term hit) and detached from the public.The latter helped with the credibility of the production. It is easier to believe in mythical, impossible events when they develop in the already mythologized past. In addition, Zemeckis wanted to show America before the spread of television, so as not to get involved with the characters of the animated series and focus on the heroes of the movie films.

What kind of heroes? When this issue was discussed, Spielberg made perhaps his most significant contribution to the production. He used his immense authority to negotiate with major Hollywood studios to use their classic characters, from Bugs Bunny to Woody the Woodpecker.Their competitors would have refused to disney, but few decided to say no to Spielberg. In particular, it was not possible to agree on the appearance in “Roger Rabbit” of the sailor Popeye, Tom and Jerry, and the ghost of Casper.

Of course, the agreements for the use of third-party characters were signed on tough terms. So, Warner studio insisted that its key characters have as much screen time as similar Walt Disney characters will have. Therefore, Donald Duck and Duffy Duck, as well as Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny, appear in the frame only together, as comical partners.

Having signed contracts, third-party studios were removed from the project, and the mixing of the drawn characters in the frame completely fell on the shoulders of the Disney people. The studio wanted Darell van Sitters to continue working on the project as animation director, but Zemeckis had a different creator in mind. The director, along with Spielberg, was involved in the creation of “Roger Rabbit” by British Canadian Richard Williams, an Oscar winner for the 1971 cartoon “A Christmas Carol”. Zemeckis mostly knew Williams from the animated credits of films such as Casino Royale and The Return of the Pink Panther, as well as the fragments of the long-running cartoon The Thief and the Shoemaker, which the animator had been working on since the mid-1960s. …

Williams was reluctant to work on Roger Rabbit, but he agreed on the condition that Spielberg and Walt Disney help him complete The Thief and the Shoemaker. As we now know, this condition was not met. But Williams brilliantly, in the best classical traditions, worked on the animation of Roger Rabbit. Which, according to Zemeckis, was supposed to combine the subtlety and skill of Walt Disney, the flamboyance of Warner characters and the “crazy” uninhibited humor of Tex Avery (the creator of Bugs Bunny).

Meanwhile, the newly hired Price and Simen continued to rework and polish the script, filling it with jokes and postmodern allusions along the way. Relocating the action to Los Angeles in 1947 allowed the writers to be inspired by their favorite film, Chinatown, and use a real story from the dark past of Los Angeles in the plot. If Roman Polanski’s film was about the California “water wars” (that is, about the confrontation over the rights to water, which is not easy in California), then “Roger Rabbit” is about the destruction of Los Angeles trams.In reality, the city’s tram system was crushed by lobbyists from the auto industry, who sought to get citizens to travel in private cars and buses. In the film, this is the “project” of the main villain, who fights with trams and tries to demolish the city of cartoon heroes in order to build new roads and transfer Californians from rails to tires.

For a long time, the authors could not decide who would be the main villain of the film. In the book, the culprits of what happened are the genie from the magic lamp and the rabbit Roger himself, but in the script the genie was abandoned, and Roger turned out to be so cute and stupid that it was absurd to portray him as a villain.For a long time it was believed that the rabbit’s wife Jessica Rabbit or his colleague in the filming of the cartoons Little Herman would become the criminal, but in the end they settled on a villain specially invented for the film named Judge Rock. Roca is accompanied by five henchman ferrets, which were originally seven, as they parodied the dwarfs from Disney’s Snow White. There was an idea to make Rock the hunter, who shot Bambi’s mother, but the studio hacked this plan. In general, a lot more scenes were invented for the film than they ended up on the screen.Unused fragments were rejected for financial or temporary reasons. The project was already extremely difficult.

As we have already noted, the investigation in Roger Rabbit is led by private detective Eddie Valiant. The book describes him in a traditional heroic manner, and Spielberg wanted Harrison Ford to play this role. However, Ford’s services were too expensive. Therefore, the image was rethought as less heroic and more comic, and the role was offered to Bill Murray.However, at that time he had already become “Hollywood unattainable”, and it was not possible to contact him in time. Producers managed to communicate with Eddie Murphy, but he did not want to be a “white clown” with a super-comic rabbit, which he later regretted. As a result, the job was received by the British Bob Hoskins, who had just been nominated for an Oscar for the British crime drama Mona Lisa. After Roger Rabbit, he was perceived as a comedian, but before he was known as a dramatic and even tragic actor. For example, in the classic 1980 gangster film “The Long Good Friday,” Hoskins portrayed the boss of the London mafia.

Judge Rock is a drawn character, but this is revealed only at the climax of the picture. Previously, he disguises himself as a person, and, accordingly, portrays him as an actor, and not as a special effect. The producers initially looked closely at Tim Curry, but found his portrayal of Rock too intimidating and more suitable for a horror than a comedy detective. Christopher Lee himself turned down the role, and the job was taken by Christopher Lloyd, who had previously played for Zemeckis in Back to the Future.To hint to the audience that not everything is all right with his character, Lloyd never blinked in the frame.

The role of waitress Dolores, who was formerly Eddie’s girlfriend, was given to the beautiful Joanna Cassidy, a replica from Blade Runner. Later, however, the role of Roger passed to pop comedian Charles Fleischer, who had previously appeared in “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” Fleischer only had to write down the rabbit’s phrases, but he was constantly present on the set and gave cues to Hoskins, and to heighten the image he did it in a rabbit costume.From the outside, it seemed that Fleischer was playing Roger in the picture, and uninformed observers whispered that the tape was doomed. “Instead of a cartoon character, they have a guy in a stupid suit!” In addition to Roger, Fleischer voiced two ferrets and Benny’s talking taxi.

A platoon of voice actors led by Mel Blank, who has portrayed most of Warner’s characters, starting with Bugs Bunny, was brought in to voice the classic characters. Although Richard Williams agreed to work with Disney, he refused to move from London to California. So he worked on animation in Britain, and the filming of the actors was organized at the famous English studio Elstree Studios near London. Naturally, American Disney artists were also involved, and some of the street filming took place in Los Angeles to capture cityscapes and landmarks in the frame.

In total, 326 animators worked on the painting, who in total, including concepts and sketches, created about a million images. For direct use in the film, 82 thousand frames were drawn. All this is done by hand, without the use of computer animation, which has not yet reached the required technical level and artistic perfection.

How did Zemeckis fit the cartoon characters into the real world? If it was about the physical interaction of an actor and a cartoon, then the scene was filmed at least twice – not counting rehearsals and unsuccessful and spare takes.At first, the actor played with the character’s life-size doll in order to remember and record all the interaction parameters on film. Let’s say how you need to squeeze your hand around the cartoon’s neck. Then the scene was filmed without a doll, and the actor tried to accurately recreate his previous actions, “playing” with emptiness. Hoskins and his colleagues have specifically learned from mimes to interact with something that doesn’t really exist. Think of typical mime numbers like “Mime in an invisible box.” Subsequently, a character was drawn into the frame, and the scene acquired a script sense.

If the cartoon interacted with a real object, then there were two ways. Or a robot was created, performing the necessary action and taking up so little space in the frame that in its place it was possible to draw a character. So, for example, a robot was created that hits the plates, and then Roger was drawn in his place, and it turned out that a rabbit was hitting the plates. In other cases, objects suspended from fishing lines were moved by puppeteers and decorations on the ceiling.On the film, for example, a revolver flying through the air was displayed, to which the animators were painting a ferret, and it turned out a drawn villain armed with a real weapon.

All this was extremely hard and painstaking work, which was further complicated by the fact that Zemeckis insisted on using a moving camera. After all, the more complex the movement of the camera, the more difficult it is to fit the drawn character into the frame. As a result, despite all attempts to save money, the film’s budget went off scale for the very 50 million that Walt Disney initially refused to spend.The head of the studio, Michael Eisner, was thrashing and metal, but he did not dare to cut off funding for Spielberg’s project.

At least for filming, tram lines did not have to be re-laid in Los Angeles. The tram was depicted as museum imitations moving on wheels. So instead of tram tracks, it was enough to put metal strips on the road that looked like rails from a distance.

Filming with cartoons affected not only the budget of the film, but also on the psyche of Bob Hoskins. He was so used to “seeing” non-existent rabbits, ferrets and taxis everywhere that he began to move with his mind.Fortunately, it did not come to insanity, but the actor had to rest for a long time, calm down and come to his senses before he could take on a new job.

Filming took about eight months, while animation and visual effects continued for another 14 months. It was a huge project that had to come out. Otherwise, many respected people, led by Spielberg and Eisner, would have hit their faces in the mud.

The first preview was unsuccessful – the audience was young and cynical, not inclined to watch comedy noir with cartoon heroes. Disney bosses were horrified, but Zemeckis refused to change anything. He certainly believed in his picture. True, for good luck, he did not put a question mark at the end of the title of the film “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” according to the rules of grammar, since in Hollywood this symbol in the title of the film is considered a bad omen.

When the film was released on June 22, 1988, the director’s hopes were fully justified.The film made a splash and grossed $ 330 million on a $ 50 million budget – an excellent result for the time. Roger Rabbit was highly praised by almost everyone who wrote about it, except, oddly enough, veterans of non-Disney animation. They did not like that Bob Hoskins outplayed Roger and did not allow him to become the main character of the tape. The masters believed that Roger Williams had failed in his artistic task.

Nevertheless, Williams received a special Oscar for animation directing the tape.Also, the Film Academy awarded the picture for its editing, visual effects and sound editing. Bob Hoskins was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance.

In the following years, the question of filming a sequel or prequel to Roger Rabbit was raised many times, but these plans never materialized. Walt Disney has a lot of other things to do these days and it’s for the best. Roger Rabbit needs no sequel. This is how Rabbit became a unique project in Hollywood history. For Williams to work with, Zemeckis had to film and edit all the “real” scenes before sending them to the animators.In fact, the director finished work on the film long before he could see it in its entirety on the screen. After that, he could only throw out entire scenes. It was no longer possible to tweak the episode (for example, by replacing the take with a more successful one) after the cartoon characters had been drawn into it.

It was a colossal creative risk, and Zemeckis already had problems above the roof.
