Reward jar: I Tried a Parenting With a Reward Jar and Got My Kids to Behave Better

I Tried a Parenting With a Reward Jar and Got My Kids to Behave Better

About thirty seconds before the family sat down for my wife’s birthday dinner, things got tense. Really tense.

As I was stacking the pizza boxes on the table my seven-year-old kid, the middle child of three, came into the kitchen. He was utterly devastated. His feisty little sister had robbed his handheld video game and she was not giving it back. In no uncertain terms, he insisted this madness was resolved before we ate.

I looked over his sister perched on one of the dining chairs. Under her mass of curly blonde hair, I saw the scowling little face of our four-year-old, who we call “Queen,” lit from underneath by the haze of Galaga on an LCD inches from her nose. Adorable but terrifying at the same time. I wanted nothing more than to avoid the horrors of trying to pry it from her powerful little meat hooks.

But there was a system now: The Reward Jar. It was my duty to use it.

The system had been developed a week earlier on the advice of my wife. It was an act of desperation after the four-year-old Queen had received a timeout at her aunt’s house, screaming, at the top of her little lungs, that she wanted to “kill everyone in this house and make them dead.”

It wasn’t an isolated incident. We’ve been having problems with anger and disrespect and acting out for quite a while now, especially with the youngest two kids. We’d long ignored their behavior when it was in the house, as long as it wasn’t particularly mean or violent, but it had now spilled over beyond our immediate family. Something had to be done.

My wife suggested a course of action she’d heard had worked with her sister. It’d been recommended to her by their behavioral therapist. The rewards jar. It seemed so simple.

This is how it was supposed to work. We’d buy a massive glass jar for each kid, and drop a fluffy pom-pom ball into the jar whenever they “made the right choice”. As the jar filled, the pom-pom level would reach rewards marked like a graduated cylinder or measuring cup on the jar. They reward would be fulfilled Immediately. No questions asked.

The worst behaviors, yelling “kill” physical aggression, or wanton destruction, would be punished swiftly and without warning. Minor misbehaviors would slide. But when the kids were told to “make the right choice or else … ” they’d have to step-up or receive swift punishment.

We purchased, marked and decorated the jars (so much glitter) and had a family meeting to lay down the new law. They seemed to get it, though our middle kid skillfully explored the gray areas.

“What if you hear me say ‘shut up’ but I was gonna say ‘shut up and dance with me?’”

I don’t know! I didn’t even think about that! I have literally no idea what to—

“If it is said in anger, it still counts,” replied the wife. Clutch.

We explained the punishments. And launched

On day one, I came downstairs from a bath and 4-year-old was on her knees, shuddering in rage that her llama had been taken by mom. I pulled my wife into the kitchen for an emergency crisis meeting. “She said ‘hate,’” my wife said. “So I took Llama away for 24 hours.” Matter of fact. Consistent.

It got messy, but we stuck to our guns. Nine confiscated stuffed animals in the hallway closet later, the dust settled. The next day, llama and company were returned to their owner in a tearful reunion.

After that, it got kind of weird. In a good way. When I picked the kids up from the in-laws after work the next day, there was an eerie calm. They were wonderful, they said. Each kid earned a pom-pom for being so good, they said. The drive home was even more bizarre. Kind words and sing-a-longs, the sort of things had been a rarity for months. That evening, middle kid got a bit ornery about bath time, but “made the right choice” and ended up finishing the bath without the world ending.

Then came the birthday pizza and the stolen video game.

I kneeled beside the 4-year-old. “Queen,” I said, firmly and with all the seriousness that our ridiculous affectionate nickname allows. “Your brother wants his thing back.”

I knew there would be silence before the storm. There always is. “Please give it back to him.”

No reaction, so I doubled down.

“Please make the right choice and give it to him. I know you can do the right thing. If you don’t make the right choice… Well, I’ll have to give you a punishment. It’s a rule.”

Immediately—if somewhat reluctantly—she flicked the on/off switch and set the game down on the table. A face of thunder and fury, but no outburst. Middle kid snatched it away in a theatrical victory and took it up to his room to hide it—and himself—from her.

Five minutes passed and we were tucking into the pizza. Queen was giggling and plucking the pineapple chunks off my slice like we didn’t just avoid World War III. The middle kid even joined us too. Everything was resolved, I guess. Huh.

Maybe we fixed the kids.

Obviously, there were hiccups. Llama bit the dust twice more. The middle kid went to his room three times. Daily, though, pom-poms built up and by day seven both younger kids had hit the “CHOOSE ANY CANDY” jackpot. I took them to get their reward and they dutifully gorged as they waited for mom to get home. The sugar had made them a bit feisty, but even the combination of sugar and possessive jealousy couldn’t defeat the Reward Jar Rules.

At first, I was amazed that the rewards jar had been so effective in moderating their behavior. But as the week went on, and I found myself being more consistent and calm and patient, knowing that I had The Rules behind me to defer to, I understood that the kids were—always are, in fact—reacting to my parenting. The Jar and the codified law that went along with it hadn’t given structure to my four-year-old or seven-year-old kids. What a ridiculous notion that would be. Instead, The Rules had acted as a goal for me to refer to, as well — a boundary outside of my own frustrations that I could reference while parenting. I used it not only when talking to them, but also for measuring my own reactions to them being assholes. The sparkly jars had shown me how to control my reactionary parenting, remain consistent with punishments, and, most importantly, to tell them they’re awesome.

Which, for the most part, they really are.

Our Marble Jar: Why I Don’t Reward Expected Behavior

Please don’t get me wrong!  I do not have a magical classroom where every child does everything right all the time!  WE ARE TALKING ABOUT HUMANS, NOT ROBOTS! (and little humans no less!)  Things go wrong all day, just like every classroom.  It’s just that I choose to not reward my students for doing the right thing.  It’s what’s expected. That doesn’t mean that I’m a bland, dreary teacher who is opposed to celebrating!  On the contrary!  I feel that by not celebrating when we meet expectations, we can place our focus on when students exceed expectations, and encourage them to do it often!

If you look closely at my marble jar label, it says “BRAVERY and SMART THINKING!”

These are the two things in my classroom that will earn students an external reward (in our case, a marble in the marble jar. )  You may be asking yourself, ‘Bravery and smart thinking?  What does that look like in a classroom?’  My favorite part about this is that it looks different for EVERY child!

What requires bravery for one child, may not for another.  Here are some examples to help you get the gist of my meaning:

  • A student who rarely speaks during whole group lessons shared a lengthy account of their weekend
  • A struggling reader made it through an entire reading group session without saying “I can’t”
  • A student reached out and made a new friend
  • A student accepted a challenge and persevered
  • A student performed at a school concert even though they were “too nervous!”
  • The whole class made it through state testing!

You get the idea!  Now, smart thinking can be a bit trickier!  Smart thinking can shown academically or socially.  For example:

  • A student makes a powerful connection between something we are learning and something they have learned previously or experienced
  • A student makes an insightful comment into a social conflict
  • A struggling mathematician just related addition to subtraction and was able to share their understanding with a peer
  • A student noticed that another student was having a hard time not talking to their friend at the carpet, and offered to switch places with them
  • A student asks a probing question during a lesson that drives the conversation and helps everyone think deeper about the topic.

Is this making sense?  It’s very individualized, but very manageable because YOU KNOW YOUR STUDENTS!

Every time my students exceed expectations by demonstrating bravery and/or smart thinking, they get to put a marble in our class marble jar.  I keep the marble jar close to our meeting area, because that’s where a lot of our whole group learning takes place, and I like to keep it close!

My students love watching the marble level rise as the weeks go by.  When we get close to the top, it gets really exciting.  Students are not allowed to touch the jar.  This is not because I’m mean, but because I’ve had it spill too many times before putting this rule in place!  When it gets close to the top, I place my hand across the top of the jar and if I can feel the marbles on my palm, it means they have reached the top.  The excitement this suspense creates is amazing, and I wish I could bottle it up!

Once we reach the top, we throw a “Marble Jar Party” to celebrate all of our bravery and smart thinking! This is a party (almost) completely designed by the students.  We’ve had an outdoor games party, a movie and popcorn party, a walk to a neighborhood playground party, and countless pajama parties.  The important thing is that it is THEIRS!

I would like to put a big footnote in here to  acknowledge some important points.  First, it is critical to note that many students do not come KNOWING what is expected. My kiddos come to school with varying school and home experiences, and I always need to keep that in mind!  Some students need significant explicit modeling to ensure that they internalize these expectations. It would be very unfair of me to expect them to do things they do not fully understand. Additionally, it is important to help students recognize how expectations can differ from one setting to the next. It is only once a student can demonstrate a complete understanding that I expect them to do it.

I also want to acknowledge that there will be students that require frequent check-ins to ensure that they are able to regularly meet expectations.  I prefer to use individualized behavior plans for these students, as each of these students is struggling for different reasons.  I personally feel that my students do best when these behavior plans are kept out of view of their peers.  I know they want to do the right thing, and by helping them feel secure in their environment, I feel that they are more available to work for it!

This is what works for me in my classroom, with my student population! What works for you and your students?

Reward System For Kids (Easy & Effective!)

This is, by far, the easiest and most effective reward system for kids that I have done. I’ve shared this before but had to do so again because it is a reward system that works so well!

As an elementary teacher, I tried so many classroom reward systems to encourage good behavior and lesson negative behavior, but this is the one that works. (Here are 5 reward charts that I’ve tried. )  It works so well for behavior management by rewarding students through positive reinforcement.

Easy and Effective Reward System for Kids

I love how this rewards the children for specific behaviors as the children are rewarded individually.   I have always wanted intrinsic motivation to be the reason that our children work hard, and this reward system is a way to highlight their positive behavior.
It goes beyond things like ‘rewarding them for completing age-appropriate chores’ and instead encourages the children to work at being kind, generous, grateful and helpful.

I’ve tried many systems for rewards for kids.   This is the best one.  We’ve been doing this for more than 10 years.

The BEST Reward System for Kids

I had marbles, stickers, charts…and then I tried cotton balls in our own home!  This worked great and I have used this in our own home for many years.

We have four kids and this works with ALL of them. Even their friends try to earn cotton balls to take home – haha!

What is the goal of the reward system?

The goal is simple:  Fill your jar with cotton balls.   They get a cotton ball for doing something nice or saying something kind, without prompting.  The child earns cotton balls for doing kind things.  Easy enough, right?

What is the reward for filling their jar?

It is their choice (within reason).  They can pick to do something fun, go somewhere with us, stay up a little late… it’s up to them! They have their choice of DOING something fun.
Note: We do not spend a lot of money on rewards.     See some examples below.

Non-Toy Rewards

While there are so many types of rewards, we have decided not to use toys or money as a reward.  I want it to be something special with “someone” (quality time) instead of with “something.”   I’ve shared a list of non-toy rewards here, but I wanted to give you a few more examples to get give you some ideas to get started:

  • Bowling
  • Bike Riding
  • Sleepover in mom/dad’s room with sleeping bags on our floor
  • Have a cousin sleepover
  • Pizza & movie night. (I do not encourage screen time as a reward, but sometimes we will rent a new movie and make a night of it.)
  • Go out for ice cream
  • Go swimming
  • Stay up a little later one night to play a game
  • Go to a movie
  • Stay up late and play a board game
  • SEE MORE NON-TOY REWARDS HERE.

How do I set up the reward jar?

Each of our kids has a jar with their first initial on it… You can see how to make them here.

  1. Each jar has a rubber band on it. The rubber band serves the purpose of a “fill line”.
  2. Our oldest children have rubber bands higher on the jar because they are older & they need to get more cotton balls.
  3. As they get older (each year), the rubber band moves higher up as with their increased age comes higher expectations. This happens until they’re around six years old when I remove the rubber band and they simply have to fill the jar.
  4. OPTION: you could use chalkboard paint on your jar & draw on the fill line with chalk so that it is easily moveable as they get older.

How do they earn a reward (cotton ball)?

They earn one by doing something nice and unexpected. For example…

  • If one child spills something and the other helps to clean it up (without being asked!)
  • If I need something from downstairs and they go to get it for me (without being asked!)
  • If I catch them doing something or SAYING something kind to each other or to someone else.
  • If they help a sibling without being asked.

This reward system is easy and effective.  It has not let me down yet.

When they are towards the end (with about 5 cotton balls to go), they will be REALLY trying hard to receive rewards (cotton balls)!  As an example, two of our kids had less than two cotton balls to go in their jars before they were filled and they were doing everything to earn them:

  • Cleaning their room and then cleaning their sibling’s room.
  • Getting their brother and sister’s pajamas ready
  • Setting the kitchen table before dinner, before being asked.
  • Cleaning up the shoes in the garage.
  • Making nice notes and hanging them on each other’s doors.
  • Telling each other how great they were (it’s so fun to watch them work towards the “finish line”)

It worked!  They went bowling the next day.

What happens after the jar is filled and we’ve done the reward?

When they have earned their reward, I empty the cotton balls from their jars and put them in their ziplock bag and back into the drawer in the kitchen right under where I keep the jars.

Where do we keep the reward jars?

I keep the jars on my counter, next to my refrigerator.  It’s not the prettiest placement, but it is pretty much hidden in the corner of the counter closest to the refrigerator, except that the kids can see it every time that they are in the kitchen and they are able to keep track of it.

Can they “Lose” Cotton Balls?  Do they get taken out for negative behavior?

  • No, not anymore.   However, when they were younger, I did take it away on occasion.  This was very rare and only when they were being unkind to one another. I also always provided an opportunity to “earn it back” by being extra kind.
  •  If you start taking them away often, you are going to lose the ‘power’ that this has because it is going to take them too long to get their goal.

Tips to make the reward system a success:

  1. It takes the kids about two weeks to a month to fill up the cotton ball jar because it is a special thing and is not given for every little thing that they do.
  2. Although at first, you will want to make it fill up a little quicker so that they are able to get their first reward and understand it. Once they do this, they will see what they are working towards.
  3. Remind them when that first reward comes “This is because you filled up your cotton balls! I’m so glad that you did because this is so much fun!”
  4. Sometimes I will use cotton balls as an incentive: “if you ____, you will earn an extra cotton ball today.(Works great for this, but I don’t do this too often because I don’t want it to lose its real purpose.)
  5. I do not give them out for doing their normal chores (see age-appropriate chore list here). These cotton balls are special and come when they do something that was NOT asked of them.  (see number 6)
  6. Sometimes they will ask “can I have a cotton ball for that?” I judge that answer based on the situation.  For the most part, asking for one doesn’t get you one.
  7. If your kids need a little incentive for chores, check out our Swap Chores for Screentime Cards

The Main Idea:

  • DO SOMETHING NICE–>> GET A COTTON BALL.
  • FILL YOUR JAR->> DO SOMETHING SPECIAL WITH SOMEONE SPECIAL (Usually Mom or Dad, or even a sleepover at their grandparent’s house or cousin’s house).

How do I make the reward jars?

The directions to make these DIY reward jars are pretty easy. 🙂  I made mine from marinara sauce jars.

This has been my favorite system that we’ve used in our house.  I haven’t had to stray from this easy reward system for kids yet and it never fails me.  It has been a long term setup in our home and has worked wonders!  It sets a focus on the positive things that your children do.
I know it will work for you too!

How To Use A Marble Jar To Reward Good Behavior

We are all looking for positive parenting solutions, and we have a unique way to motivate good behavior and reward it, using a marble jar. This works great for preschoolers and elementary aged kids.

How to Use a Marble Jar to Reward Good Behavior In Kids

Most parents can remember being in elementary school and moving a paperclip labeled with their name up and down a behavior chart. It might have been in the shape of a traffic light or a banner of color blocks.

The traditional idea was to encourage positive behavior and discourage negative behavior. Instead, behavior charts publicly shame children, and many parents and school have left them behind.

Rather than measure your child’s behavior with a context-less chart, build your child’s sense of initiative and encourage those positive behaviors with a behavior marble jar.

First, Create the Behavior Marble Jar

Creating a behavior marble jar requires little more than a bag of marbles and a few glass jars from your local dollar store or some like these from Amazon.

You could even use a large glass fish bowl for the majority of the marbles, and then move them to a smaller jar as they earn the reward. Each child should have their own jar, too.

Small clear vases or even clear candle holders are also perfect for this.

How to Use the Marble Jar To Reward Positive Behavior

A behavior marble jar is all about positive reinforcement, so marbles go in and don’t come back out until the end of the day. For preschoolers, just getting up for the day could earn your child a few marbles. This helps symbolize that we all start off each day with a fresh start and a positive outlook.

The best part is that you get to determine how many marbles your child will receive for their different positive behavior.

As your child practices positive behaviors, they earn marbles that they can then add to their marble jar.

Watching their little jar fill up throughout the day is half the fun and helps encourage your child to continue practicing those positive behaviors and earn rewards.

Here are a few examples of Positive Behaviors to Reward for Preschoolers

  • I remembered to brush my teeth after breakfast
  • I put my things away
  • I was kind to my brother/sister
  • I helped a friend at preschool today
  • I was kind to someone who needed it on the playground
  • I put away my shoes
  • I helped set the table for dinner
  • I helped mommy vacuum or do laundry
  • I made my own bed

Here are a few examples of Positive Behaviors to Reward For Elementary Age Kids

  • I put out all my things the night before school
  • I helped put away my own laundry
  • I helped make dinner for the family tonight
  • I finished my homework without being asked
  • I was kind to the new kid in class
  • I helped my brother/sister with a difficult task at home
  • I read to my brother/sister
  • I shared my toys with my brother/sister
  • I waited patiently for mom/dad’s attention
  • I tidied my room without being asked
  • I wiped down the table after meal time
  • I took out the trash

Create a Reward When The Jar Is Filled (or when they reach their goal)

The marble jar isn’t about earning a specific amount of marbles before a reward can be received (unless you think a goal will motivate your child). It’s best to set a reward that can be earned daily and the quantity increased or decreased.

Parents can create a reward tied to dessert where the amount of marbles earned that day equals the number of pieces of candy. Or if you don’t like using food as a reward, you can reward with a special activity with mom or dad.

Your child’s reward might be minutes of free play before bedtime where the number of minutes equals the number of marbles.

Never Use The Marble Jar As A Form of Punishment

The most important thing about using a behavior marble jar to encourage your child’s initiative is to focus on rewarding those positive behaviors you want your child to repeat without using the jar as a form of punishment.

That’s why I think it’s so important that marbles aren’t taken out of the jar. But you can always remind them when they make a bad choice, that if they had made a different choice, they would have received a marble in the marble jar.

This method allows children to be rewarded for their achievements while learning that making mistakes does not detract from the progress they’ve made.

Guest Post: Pom Pom Jar {Reward Jar}

Special thanks to Kim {an awesome blogging mom} from Texas!

What I used to do…
Last summer, I was on the hunt for a new kind of discipline/reward technique to use in our home. At age four, it seems our son had outgrown the time out system that I had been using since he was about 18 months. He was no longer phased by sitting in time out proving it a waste of my time and his! I knew I wanted to focus more on rewarding positive behavior and experimented with a few different techniques. I created a responsibility chart where Adam received a check mark for each “responsibility” he performed (i.e. washing himself in the tub, staying in his room until 7AM, going to the bathroom without being reminded, brushing his teeth, etc.) At the end of each week, he was rewarded with a coin for every check mark he had received. At four, he was obsessed with getting money for his savings jars so this was a big thing for him. When I remembered to give him his check marks, this system worked well. However, we (ME more than anyone) tired of it and I was looking for something that worked better for our family.

How I discovered the Pom-Pom Jar
This is when a close friend of mine introduced me to the “pom pom jar” and I haven’t looked back since. I still use time-outs for my little guy, but I now also use a Pom Pom Jar for each of my boys. Here are the basics of the idea…

How to Start Using the Pom-Pom Jar

1. Each child has a “jar” of some kind. You’ll see in the pictures below that we use a plastic basket for our pom poms. (Kim uses blue for one son and green for the other – for all things in her house – how smart!)

2.  When I witness good behavior (examples….unexpected brotherly kindness, making the bed without being asked, staying dry at night, pooping in the toilet, good behavior at the grocery store, cleaning up toys without being asked, sitting quietly in church, etc. etc.), I toss a pom pom into their jar. When doing this, I make sure to make a big deal out of it and point out that fact that I am adding a pom pom to their jar. We have a rule in our house that you may not ask for a pom pom. The boys also know that they will not get a pom pom for every single act of good behavior.

3.  When their Pom Pom Jars are full, I let them pick out a “Kid Coupon.” These are coupons I made up entitling the boys to something special…usually something we would treat them too anyway but this makes it more exciting for them and makes them feel like they earned it. Some examples are…going out for ice cream, picking the restaurant for breakfast after church, going to story time at the library, buying something at the dollar store, picking out a piece of candy in the grocery store line, going to play mini-golf or bumper boats, etc. You get the idea!

4.  After the boys get their coupon, we dump out the jar and start all over again.

Our Success
We’ve been at this for at least 6 months and I’m really liking it. It typically takes them about 3-4 weeks to fill the jar (as I mentioned…I add pom poms when I remember) so it’s usually about a special treat a month which works out well without overloading me with to many things to remember.

Side Note:
I know some families/teachers who designate a certain number of pom poms for a certain behavior (i.e one pom pom for making your bed). This would just give me more to keep track of and doesn’t work for us. However, I thought I’d point it out in case you were interested in that fact. There is also a ton of info on “reward jars” on the internet if you want to look at more ideas.

Overall Response:The boys have responded well to this reward system. Even though I was really looking for something appropriate for the 4 year old, my 2 year old likes it too (although we still mainly use time outs for him)! I try to focus on rewarding positive behavior and the giving of pom poms. However, sometimes I fail miserably and throw out the threat “do you want me to take away a pom pom?!” I do this on rare occasion but it does work like a charm. 🙂

Thanks so much for sharing Kim!  This Rocks!!

Reward Jar with Free Printable Rewards

A while back, I shared my family’s Consequence Jar. It was one of my parenting go-to’s for discipline for minor infractions like forgetting to hang up a backpack or wipe off the table after dinner. It helped me avoid nagging my kids constantly and because I threw in some funny consequences, it kept it from being intimidating or from relieving me of all disciplinary action since some behavior requires specific and immediate consequences.

Recently, a very popular blogger shared my Consequence Jar on her Facebook page and it received a lot of comments. Some of the commenters had some great insights that caused me to revisit the idea. In particular, one person said that she much preferred the idea of a Reward Jar instead of one that doled out punishments. Upon reflection, I agreed so I decided to create one.

Reward Jar

Free Printable Rewards

If you love this idea as much as I do, feel free to use my Printable Rewards. Just like the printable consequences I made for my Consequence Jar, I’ve included some suggestions along with a blank page so that you can create your own. It’s up to you what behaviors you deem worthy of a visit to the reward jar.

In my house, I like to “catch” my kids doing the right thing out of the goodness of their hearts, rather than in an effort to impress someone or earn something. So, if one of my kids gives up something they want in order for one of their siblings or their friends to have it, I send them to the reward jar. Likewise, if someone does an unassigned chore without seeking credit for it, when I determine who performed the task, he or she gets to choose a reward from the reward jar.

Depending on your parenting style, you could also reward a good grade on a test or project, doing chores without being reminded, doing extra chores, helping a sibling without being asked, or putting in extra practice time. If you decide to make and use the Reward Jar, please let me know in the comments what rewards you come up with and what behaviors you reward.

Promote Good Behavior with a Puff Ball Jar!

Happy 2019 everyone! I hope your new year is off to a fabulous start! My kids, I’m sure like all of yours, have made their New Year resolutions—not to fight with their siblings, help mom with dinner, walk the dog when she needs it, etc. Oh, wait…not so accurate, right? Instead of making New Year resolutions, are your kids going stir crazy at home, doing everything in their power to annoy their siblings and thinking only of themselves? Okay, now that sounds more like it! I can see you all nodding in agreement. Don’t worry, I’m right there with you.

But that’s the great thing about starting a new year. Once a year, we adults give ourselves the hope of a “fresh start,” and this year, I’m also convinced my kids can have a fresh start as well. I recently implemented a system that focuses more on rewarding good behavior than punishing bad behavior, and despite my skepticism, I found it to be quite effective! Keep reading below to see how you can give your kids’ behavior a fresh start in 2019!

The concept is simple: reward your children for good behavior. I know it sounds cliche, but let me tell you how it works. I gave each child what we now in our family refer to as a “puff ball jar.” It’s a clear glass jar, the size of your choosing. I purchased our glass jars at The Container Store; they are about 7” in circumference. They have easy on/off lids that the kids can take on and off themselves.

We also bought some colorful letter stickers, and each child put his/her name on the jar. You could also add more decorations—totally up to you! We kept ours pretty simple so that we could see all the puff balls that are filling up our jars.

Next step is to pick out an item that you will be filling your jar with—the thing that you get when you do a good deed. We chose puff balls, or pom poms that are found in the kids craft section of most stores. They come in all different sizes and colors, but be sure to match the size of your puff ball to the jar somewhat.

For example, the kids should be able to fill it in a reasonable amount of time so that they don’t lose interest in earning them. Conversely, don’t pick jars that are too small unless you want to be doling out rewards every other day! To give you an example, my daughter Ariella was the first one to fill her jar, and it took her a couple of months. For younger kids and toddlers, I’d suggest a shorter time span and smaller rewards to keep them motivated.

Here’s how we did our reward system. Good deeds—ones that go above and beyond—earn puff balls. The kids have to do the behavior without me having to hound or nag them. Doing things they are already supposed to be doing without me asking (cleaning their rooms, putting away shoes, getting ready for bed) do not earn puff balls because they are supposed to be doing those things anyway. We reserve puff balls for REALLY good behavior.

Examples of these behaviors included:
Setting the table for dinner
Cleaning up the table and washing dishes
Helping to cook dinner
Taking care of the dog
Resolving conflicts between themselves
Helping another sibling do something that he or she needs help with
Cheering up someone when he or she is sad or needs a friend
Thinking of others before yourself
Choosing to do “right” in a situation in which others are choosing to do “wrong”

Like I said before, my middle daughter Ariella was highly motivated to fill her jar. We told them that whenever their jar is filled, they get to pick an activity of their own choosing and earn a special day alone with Mom. Ariella picked to go ice skating and have a day out shopping, and it really was a very magical day for us both. Those of you out there with multiple kids know that it’s difficult to get one-on-one time with your children. Plus, my other two kids saw what a great time she had on her special day, and now they are desperately racing to fill their jars! It’s a win-win.

The thing I love about this activity is that we only focused only positive behavior. The kids didn’t lose puff balls if they acted poorly, they simply saw their siblings earning them by modeling positive behavior and wanted to copy that.

I never in my life had so many kids BEGGING to help me with dinner or clean up. I was shocked by it to be quite honest! This reward system is great for toddlers and also worked well for my kids aged 5, 7 and 8. Once they’ve filled their jars, you just empty it and start over as they work toward their next reward. Hopefully, like me, you’ll soon have kids begging to do the dishes or sweep the floor! How’s that for a great start to 2019?
