agree that one of the charms of crafting as a hobby is that buying and hoarding
craft supplies satisfies the innate “collecting” tendency many of us have!And I think Punches are among
the top “collected” crafting tools by paper crafters the world over!

        Before I got my Big
Shot, I had a serious addiction to buying punches! And I think because there
are many posts on my blog dedicated to punch-craft, if you google Punch craft tutorials you will find quite a few links leading to my blog! I get a lot of mails asking
for guidance on punches and this month Shalini and I decided to have  “Basics” type of posts sharing Tips, Tricks and Techniques on one of crafter’s most loved tools : Punches!
What is a craft Punch?
I think all of us are familiar with the 2 hole punch we use to punch holes on papers to file them. ..well craft punches are just more sophisticated version of that.
Using craft punches you can easily punch beautiful designs on paper for home decor and party decorations,
make beautiful cards and gift boxes , add oomph to school projects,or for that matter any kind of paper craft!

Tips on Using Punches
Using Punches is so easy you dont require any special skills but here are a few tips and tricks to get the best out of your punches
Surface to Punch

  • Try to keep the punch on a hard surface[ not on your bed] while punching
  • You will get the best force with the least effort if you place your punch- paper on a sturdy table and use the palm of your hands to apply pressure on the punch [ arms extended with elbows only slightly bent so that you can exert the weight of your body and not strain your hands] 
    Punching

  • If you have a lever punch you can hold it in your hand and punch but if at all it gives you trouble go back to punching on the floor or a table exerting pressure using your hand from above!

Paper to Use for Punches

  • A mistake most beginners make while using punches is assuming all papers will work with punches
  • The thickness and texture of the paper are important considerations for using punches – Some punches work only with thin paper while some work better with thick paper like card-stock.
  • Punchcraft paper and Punch Bunch punches
  • Some punches will work best only with punch-craft paper. Most Punch Bunch , Jef Punches will not punch Card stock.

Papers to avoid with Punches

  • Handmade Paper – The fibers in most handmade papers don’t cut well with punches. And not only punches many dies too dont cut well with handmade paper
  • Glitter Paper
  • Adhesive Backed Paper- you can use them with punches but adhesive can jam your punches so it is best to avoid.
  • Specialty papers like Thai paper , Metallic foil covered paper
  • Corrugated Paper

  • Fabric lined paper
  • Ivory Card stock- even Martha Stewart Punches dont punch ivory card stock though normal card stock punches easily with Martha Stewart Punches
  • Foam – to punch foam only use punches specially designed for foam otherwise your punch can jam hopelessly!

Storage of Punches

  • Store your punches in a dry place not subject to lots of humidity to prevent them from rusting
  • Store your punches neatly arranged in a draw or box and not in a bag–well if you are wondering what is the problem with bags or throwing all your punches together. ..I once damaged a particularly loved punch by putting it in a bag along with some other punches and I was dismayed to find some plastic parts of  the punch broke due to all the jiggling around it was subject to and it stopped working!
  • Store your punches away from dust – I have seen many crafters from foreign countries proudly displaying their punches in the open. This is not a very good option for Indian crafters as most of us stay in places with a dust problem! Store in small / large plastic style cupboards or plastic boxes or cupboards.

In Whiskey, Age Isn’t Everything

In theory, a whiskey age statement has a simple task: It conveys how many years a spirit spent in barrel and, thus, its presumed level of maturity. But these numbers have often carried more weight than that. For many, they’re a symbol of sophistication, class and expertise—a shorthand for both the consumer and the brand to communicate worth. And today, more than ever, the age statement is a data point that drinkers consider when evaluating the merits of a whiskey. But its roots tell a different story.

Age statements as a matter of course for whiskey are a fairly recent development. Though outside the United States, most whiskeys have a minimum maturation period, the rules around aging whiskey aren’t static, and neither are perceptions of age and maturity. Nicholas Morgan, a Scotch historian and author, points out that as early as the 18th century, long before whisky was even put into bottles, a language of age had developed around it, with monikers like “very very fine” to indicate more maturity; that language kept evolving. “‘Well-aged’ in 1850 meant something very different from ‘well-aged’ in 1860 or ’70, and something very different from ‘well-aged’ at the turn of the century,” Morgan says.


Age wasn’t just an indicator of how the Scotch whisky might taste. When early mover Johnnie Walker debuted a trio of age-stated whiskies—5, 8 and 12 years old—in 1906, it did so in the midst of a debate about whether whisky made on column stills, like the grain whiskies used in blends, could be considered whisky at all. The very identity of the spirit was in question. So the introduction of age statements, Morgan says, was “very much an assurance to consumers” of the integrity of the blended whisky. But long after the debate was settled, Johnnie Walker’s age statements stayed, thanks to their popularity—and because the company could keep offering them, having planned and laid down stock accordingly.


For bourbon and American whiskey, the bonding period generally dictated maximum age statements; until the 1950s, eight years was as high as it went. “Brands like Very Old Barton or Very Old Fitzgerald were 8 years old because that was as old as it could get before you paid the taxes,” says Michael Veach, bourbon historian and author. “That was considered old whiskey.”

But the midcentury proved to be a watershed period for age statements on both sides of the Atlantic. In the early 1950s, whiskey tycoon Lewis Rosenstiel—head of Schenley, one of America’s “Big Four” whiskey producers—predicted that the Korean War would be as significant as World War II, with similar rationing, and he aggressively laid down stocks of bourbon and rye in preparation.

Once his wartime prediction flopped, Rosenstiel was left with a glut of maturing bourbon and rye. Facing down a massive tax bill, he did the American thing: Looking to turn a profit, Rosenstiel lobbied to increase the bonding period to 20 years. He succeeded, and began selling whiskeys with ever-increasing age statements, usually priced below what his competitors could match. Other distillers had no choice but to try to keep up, even as the effort was driving them out of business, and as consumer tastes failed to adapt. “Most people didn’t really like whiskey that old,” Veach says. “They were used to, since Prohibition, a lighter whisky style like they make in Canada and Scotland.” For many reasons, including the undercutting Rosenstiel put in motion, bourbon began declining from the 1960s onward.

Around the same time, another whisky tycoon, Sam Bronfman of Seagram’s, debuted Chivas Regal 12 year old. Though several Scotch producers had been exporting age-stated blends to the U. S. before then, Chivas Regal 12 changed the game. “[It] was a big moment for the Scotch business in the States,” Morgan says, explaining that the brand’s marketing targeted the sophisticated drinker, and it was priced accordingly. Chivas Regal 12’s resounding success in the U.S. market led to a wave of age-stated products among competing brands. (Johnnie Walker was forced to bring its age statements back after discontinuing them during World War II, when alcohol production was largely diverted to the war effort and the brand was unable to keep supplying older stocks.)

“The numbers thing sank home in the [Scotch] industry because of its importance in the United States,” Morgan says. “[But] it’s only really when single malts appear that ages become more of a generality,” with statements employed more broadly by other brands.

The first widely released single malt in the U.S. came from Glenfiddich in 1963 with no age statement, but by the next decade, the bottle bore an 8. “No one knew what a single malt was and no one knew what a Glenfiddich was,” Morgan says. “The number was an easy mark of connoisseurship.” Whisky producers, eager to take up more shelf space, began adding more age-stated expressions.

Meanwhile, bourbon was foundering; even with mature age statements and eye-catching decanters, the industry couldn’t find enough takers for its massive surplus. So barrels sat in warehouses and their contents kept maturing, until the 1990s when things finally started to change. “Whiskey starts to go up in sales, frankly, thanks to the Scots,” says Veach. “They had introduced single malt Scotch into the United States and convinced people that whiskey can be enjoyed for the flavor; it wasn’t just something you knock back at a bar to get drunk.” Extra-mature bourbons that emerged in this period, like Pappy Van Winkle and the legendary A.H. Hirsch 16 year old, showed that bourbon could stand shoulder to shoulder with its Scottish counterparts.

The two decades surrounding the new millennium was something of a golden age for age-stated whiskies, with Scotch companies still bottling old malts from the “whisky loch” of the 1980s and bourbon producers discovering a market for all their well-aged barrels. Age statements proliferated, and consumers lapped them up. But from the mid-aughts to today, age statements have been harder to find, as supply and demand dynamics work themselves out. Many Scotch brands dropped some of their age statements a decade or so ago, and are just now beginning to reintroduce them. Bourbon is following a similar pattern, albeit a few steps behind, with age-stated products currently commanding prices that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.

The conversation, however, is starting to shift. Though a number on the bottle is still often seen as mark of connoisseurship—or rather, spending power—it’s now far from the only thing considered when talking about a spirit’s quality and caliber. Just as the concept of “well-aged” developed over the last three centuries, it continues to evolve. Drinkers today are more curious and educated about spirits than previous generations, and whiskey—especially on the craft side—is more transparent than ever, offering enough information on the label to prove that age isn’t everything. As Morgan says, “It is actually ultimately all about what something tastes like.”

She was born in the village of Kanelovskaya in the family of collective farmers Panteley Erofeevich and Ksenia Semyonovna Zheleznyak. She was still quite a baby when her mother died. After a while, my father got married, but in 1941 four children (including my grandmother) were sent to an orphanage. For four years they were transported from one orphanage to another. And only after the war was the father able to bring all his children together.

My grandmother’s childhood was difficult, like all children of the post-war period: they went to school, then helped their parents around the house and in the field.It was these harsh years that hardened her strength, endurance, hard work and the ability to withstand the blows of fate.

Once at school she saw her classmate’s embroidered collars of school uniforms, blouses, shirts. The grandmother was so interested in the beautiful patterns that, taking a pen and a piece of paper in a box, she immediately began to sketch the pattern. Parents bought her a canvas, threads, needles, and soon she herself could boast to her friends of embroidered collars, embroidered skirts and blouses.At the same time, my grandmother embroidered the very first and therefore, probably, the most beloved picture – a cat in a basket with flowers. The drawing was made on canvas, she picked up the threads herself. And he still keeps it in his room in the most honorable place.

After graduating from school, my grandmother went to work on the Voroshilov collective farm. Her day began long before sunrise and before the first roosters, and ended at sunset. But she never complains about her difficult life, but, on the contrary, recalls with a smile and tells how merrily the weeding of the fields went on, how the young strong seedlings of corn were pleasing to the eye, how they received awards for a good brood of pigs, how fervently they celebrated the harvest with drinking songs …A few years later, my grandmother became a team leader and was already responsible not only for her work, but also for the efforts of her wards. And even at these times, she did not part with needlework, she also took a needle and thread and a canvas in her hands, and with each new stitch, with each new cross, her picture came to life and acquired new features.

In 1958 she married Grigory Pavlovich Stryuk and went to work on the Kalinin collective farm. They had three daughters – Galina, Lyubov, Lyudmila, and the last was a son, Alexander.

For conscientious work, the grandmother was awarded the title “Honorary Collective Farmer”, awarded the medals “Veteran of Labor” and “Drummer of Communist Labor”. Many troubles and trials fell to her lot – the death of her husband, father-in-law, the service of her son in Afghanistan. Two years of sleepless nights and anxious days added to her gray hair, but her son returned safe and sound, and her mother’s heart began to beat more calmly.

Grandmother never stopped embroidering, and maybe that’s why she managed to control herself and overcome life’s difficulties.After all, while doing needlework, she had time to think over, to comprehend how she should proceed, how to survive everything! She had a lot of embroidered paintings and pillows, she gave everything to her daughters, and even now, embroidered back in the 50-80s of the last century, are pleasing to the eye. I am very happy that “love for embroidery”, as my aunts say, “passed down to me” from my grandmother.

When I buy the next issue of an embroidery magazine, I always try to go to her for a cup of tea to watch it together.We discuss the pictures we like, she gives me advice on which embroidery to make brighter, and which one she would like to embroider herself. Thanks to my grandmother, I started to embroider too. First of all, I hasten to show her each of my work, and I am always pleased to hear from her praise.

But love for needlework was inherited not only to me and not only from my grandmother. My grandmother’s brother, Vasily Panteleevich, was engaged in woodcarving. My mom still has a doll couch made by his hands.And what beautiful boxes he made! Grandfather Grigory Pavlovich was an excellent carpenter and was also fond of woodcarving. In her youth, my mother loved to sew beautiful dresses for herself and always looked in those “scarce” 80s in a special way. My brother Sergei is fond of sawing with a jigsaw, and now he took up embroidering football emblems and decorated his car with them. His wife Tanya is also fond of embroidery. Aunts Galina and Lyudmila knit, and Uncle Alexander once sawed out with a jigsaw and burned wood.Cousins ​​are engaged in beading, brother Tolik makes a figurine for the garden, and sister Katya and daughter-in-law Nastya do decoupage. Anastasia Mozolevskaya was born into a Sami family of reindeer-fishermen in the village of Semiostrovye on October 3, 1935.From 1990 to 2007 she taught Sami handicrafts at vocational school No. 26 in the village of Lovozero. For 17 years, she has trained more than one generation of talented craftsmen. From 1993 to 1998 she was the head of the public organization of Sami masters and artists “Chepes Sam”.

I got acquainted with the Lectures of Oleg Torsunov two years ago. At that time, my husband and I lived for 25 years in marriage, raised four children, and suddenly (although suddenly nothing happens) my husband left for another woman.

I attended the seminars of Oleg Torsunov who came to our city and gradually began to understand how many mistakes she had made. And my biggest mistake was that I buried my beautiful feminine deep in myself, justifying myself by the fact that I had to drag my own family, raising children, etc., etc.

I forgot that I am a Woman, not a squirrel in a wheel, not a woman, that galloping into a burning hut, that being strong is abnormal for a woman’s nature, that overcoming obstacles by force is unnatural for a woman’s essence.It turned out that the divorce brought me to my senses, brought me to myself.

To date, work on myself has not yet been completed, from the nursery I moved to the kindergarten, and until I am completely perfect I still have to go and go.
What have I understood, realized, and what conclusions have I made for myself?
First, I am glad that I have freed myself from anger and resentment towards my now ex-husband. In my heart I was able to let him go with wishes for good and happiness in another family. We communicate as friends, and I am glad that I calmly accept this fact.
Secondly, I realized that I must live honestly, not deceive myself, listen to my inner voice of a Woman and live, checking myself against this destiny.
Thirdly, I had a desire to do something for myself and my joy. In my free time I sew dolls, weave baskets, knit rugs, master different types of handicrafts, and enjoy …

I enjoy my natural femininity, amazed and delighted that information flows to me to continue working on myself, to grow My Beautiful Flower of Love and Joy.
Sometimes I think that I am alone, that there is no One next to me to lean on in difficult times, but I understand that there is God, there is love, and there are people from whom I learn to live.

And it doesn’t matter that this year will hit 50. It is happiness that I can start living anew, and start with myself. This amazing period was given to me in order to understand how beautiful and happy I am, what wonderful children I have, what a wonderful and beloved profession I have, what talented and worthy people surround me.
I thank God for every day I have lived, for everything that happens in my life, for the wonderful joy of feeling like a Woman.

I must confess that the cover of the book “Crochet embroidery. A Practical Guide “from Shelagh Amor, more precisely, the embroidery presented on it literally fascinated me long before I could finally look inside. I don’t even know what the matter is: either the subtle grace of the curls, or the color scheme, but the design won me over!

But no matter how beautiful the cover is, every time I open a new book on embroidery, I wonder if it has something to surprise.After all, having studied a certain number of publications, you begin to understand how inevitably similar textbooks are. For objective reasons, most of them are aimed at beginners, which means that sections on the necessary tools, threads, fabrics, basic techniques and recommendations are repeated over and over again.

Today I will tell you with pleasure whether the book in the beautiful cover surprised me!

The introductory part, the one where everything is about the tools, transferring the pattern to the fabric, etc. within the expected: for a beginner, information is enough, for an experienced needlewoman, nothing new.

Some illustrative elements are presented in the book in the form of diagrams, but at the same time there are enough colored ones.

The book also has a Color principles section that summarizes the principles of color theory, and I loved the embroidery interpretation of the color wheel! In fact, this illustration has no practical meaning, but the idea is great.

After that comes a small subtitle “The choice of colors for wool embroidery”, and although there are no illustrations in it, the information is interesting! The author says that the most popular color of Jacobin embroidery was historically green, followed by blue, brown and yellow, and the threads were dyed at home. Frankly, this topic is so interesting that I am truly sorry that this chapter is so short!

Having familiarized ourselves with the theory, we pass to practical exercises. The designs are arranged in order of complexity, but I wouldn’t call them really complex.These are relatively small cute designs in the classic style of Jacobin embroidery.

First there is a general description and a diagram, and then a large (full page and, by the way, very good quality) illustration of the finished work and a detailed text guide for embroidering each element.

There are 9 such designs in book, and then I finally wonder! A chapter entitled “Designing the Tree of Life” awaits us. As many may know, the Tree of Life is one of the foundational designs of Jacobin embroidery, which is rooted in the Indian history of this type of embroidery (you can read more about this in my article The Indian Roots of Jacobin Embroidery).Perhaps we can say that anyone who truly and faithfully loves Jacobin embroidery is simply obliged to embroider the Tree of Life one day! At the same time, I have not come across a clear finished design of this pattern anywhere before, and from this chapter we will learn how you can create it yourself.

Gradually adding elements, the author demonstrates what constitutes the tenth diagram of the book, after which, again, there is a step-by-step description of the process of embroidering it and a photograph of the finished work.

Another pleasant surprise is not long in coming: the next chapter is devoted to the principles of creating a design based on curls.This is the very design that adorns the cover of the book, and the author again shows with step-by-step diagrams how to add decorative elements to the base to get the final pattern.

What I especially liked, the book contains several pages with scattered small elements, which, based on the principles studied, can be combined at your discretion, getting new unique designs. And what is especially cool, there are not only flowers-leaves, but also animals traditional for the Jacobin: a squirrel, a deer, a hare, etc.I have never seen anything like this before, although animals and insects really played a big role in old designs!

The book ends with a dictionary of stitches: nothing out of the ordinary, simple, accessible, with good visual diagrams.

Resume

The book is not particularly large in volume, 112 A4 pages, and is unlikely to teach an experienced craftswoman new techniques (alas, a lot of textbooks on embroidery are guilty of this). But I personally really like the style of the author (I mean, the embroideries themselves), the wonderful balance of grace and tradition of crochet embroidery.In addition, I like that the book teaches not only to embroider from ready-made patterns, but also helps to understand the principle of creating your own patterns based on traditional elements.

Result: surprised? Without a doubt, yes!
