The Pollyanna Dress – Cari Homemaker

Author: Cari July 31, 2016

I don’t usually look back with incredible fondness on 1980’s styles. This dress is an exception. The pattern is Simplicity 8704, from 1988. Just look at that side ponytail.

I had a dress from this pattern when it was first released, made by my mom, of course. It was pink and white with something of an abstract floral pattern to it. I called it my Pollyanna dress and I loved wearing it so much. I had three younger sisters who wore it after me and I think it finally disintegrated after the last one outgrew it. My mom let me borrow her copy of the pattern (which she still had sitting around in her pattern file) so I could make a new dress for Guinevere.

Guinevere’s dress is made from the scraps of the blue and white sateen I used for this dress. Because of the godets in my dress, I had some oddly-shaped scraps left over.

There was just barely enough fabric left to cut out this dress and I managed to get all the stripes to go the directions I wanted them to. This was actually the perfect pattern to use up those scraps, since none of the individual pieces are particularly large.

I love the 1920’s vibe of this dress. The sleeves, of course, are all 80’s, but that’s not a bad thing on a young girl. I get a strong American Girl Doll vibe from this dress, but can’t figure out which doll it would have been. I don’t remember there ever being a 1920’s-era doll. Samantha was probably the closest one, but wasn’t she late-Victorian?

As with so many projects I make for Guinevere, this one took longer than I thought it would. What time I save in not having to make a ton of fitting adjustments for her is more than used up by sewing lace everywhere, it seems. It’s not necessarily difficult, just somewhat tedious, especially with the corners on the collar of this one.

The sleeve bands and waistband facing are hand-stitched in place on the inside also, and the bow had some hand-sewing involved to get the knot in place and to tack it to the dress. I didn’t find the construction order of this dress to be completely intuitive, but following the instructions it went together fairly easily.

She loves it. I was a little worried she’d find the drop-waist feels too weird compared to what she usually wears, or the sleeves to be too conspicuous compared to what her friends wear, but I’ve had no such complaints at all. I, of course, love it too. It reminds me of my original dress, but without being an exact copy.

Jamie Lee Curtis On Her Mother Janet Leigh And #MeToo

“It’s not fair to unpack that.”

And you probably know that her mother was late actor Janet Leigh, who iconically starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s classic suspense film

Psycho. Courtesy Everett Collection

While talking to fellow actor Melanie Griffith for Interview, Curtis pointed out that Leigh was friends with Griffith’s mother, actor Tippi Hedren, who also worked with Hitchcock. Griffith then pointed out that the director “apparently was not very good with my mom.”

In 2016, Hedren alleged that Hitchcock sexually assaulted her. “I’ve never gone into detail on this, and I never will,” she wrote in her memoir Tippi from that year. “I’ll simply say that he suddenly grabbed me and put his hands on me. It was sexual, it was perverse, and it was ugly, and I couldn’t have been more shocked and repulsed.”

“I don’t think Janet would have ever acknowledged if there was any bad behavior,” Curtis replied. “She was, it’s a bad term, but kind of Pollyanna-ish about the industry.”

“I think the #MeToo movement would have really upset her. It’s not fair to unpack that, because she’s dead and I’m going to put words in her mouth, but knowing her, I think she would not say that he misbehaved in any way.”

This isn’t the first time Curtis has mentioned her mother recently.

For the costume party premiere of Halloween Kills, she donned Leigh’s iconic Psycho look as her own costume. Rich Fury / FilmMagic

“Honoring my mother in ALL her gory…I meant glory!” Jamie wrote in an Instagram caption highlighting the costume.

If you or someone you know has experienced sexual assault, you can call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE, which routes the caller to their nearest sexual assault service provider. You can also search your local center here.

Uncle Sam overreacting to parents overreacting to face mask mandates

Attorney General Merrick Garland’s issuance of a memorandum using the authority of the Patriot Act to direct the federal government’s counterterrorism agents to monitor parental conduct at school board meetings is more than a tad chilly.

Intimidating anyone is never OK.

Threatening them with physical violence is unacceptable and, given the context, can be illegal as well.

However, intimidating school board members shouldn’t be a federal case except perhaps for extreme instances.

There is little doubt the conduct of some parents during school board meetings especially regarding the issue of face mask mandates often veers into the irreprehensible even by the vulgar standards that pass today as political discourse.

Elevating it to the level of domestic terrorism, though, smacks of political repression.

Again, it is clear that physical confrontations and some outlandish threats are clearly a crime and should be addressed. That is why we have local law enforcement.

What we are seeing, though, is essentially a knee jerk reaction by the nation’s top law enforcement officer to the knee jerk reactions of a few parents.

The knee jerk reactions of those parents even if they happen in Timbuctoo are amplified beyond reason by social media, cable TV news and bloggers who have no idea Timbuctoo is in Nevada County let alone Nevada County is in California.

Although I can’t speak for local school board members across this country that have had the unpleasant experience of angry parents shouting them down about mask mandates at board meetings I’ve been in their shoes.

I was a Western Placer Unified school board member from 1975 through 1983.

And I faced a packed cafeteria of parents angry over a school mandate involving, ironically what students had to wear.

It wasn’t face masks but how they were allowed to wear pants and dresses as well as the length of their hair if they happened to be male.

I was 19 at the time and a year out of high school. Given the board chairman had to work as vice chairman I got to run the special meeting with more than 250 people in attendance, a small crowd outside, and crews from two Sacramento TV stations.

The issue was whether girls should be allowed to wear spaghetti strap dresses and designer overalls to school and if boys could have hair touching their collar.

In retrospect it seems like Ozzie & Harriet stuff today compared to the edgy debate it was at the time. Most large city schools by 1975 had moved beyond dress codes that required administrators and teachers to micromanage on an intense scale.  That wasn’t true of smaller towns.

For the record, I wasn’t for a nay or yea on what students had proposed that the district administration batted down and subsequently led to an upheaval in the community. Instead I was pushing for a basic health and safety dress code with on-site administrators empowered to say what was allowed beyond that.

My rationale was simple. The board was wasting a lot of time and energy every year on student requests to change the dress code. We also hired principals to run schools who should be able to make decisions regarding fashion changes and whether they were a distraction and/or a safety hazard in a learning environment we entrusted them to maintain.

There was one other board member that agreed with me. It was Lee Springer who happened to be an elementary principal in the neighboring Wheatland School District.

A lot of passionate people spoke that day, including a few that were belligerent with staff and board members who disagreed with the viewpoints they were espousing. Keeping things civil was a challenge.

There came a point when I spoke not simply to keep order and move the meeting forward but during the board discussion to advocate my solution.

I was speaking for perhaps 30 seconds when one lady jumped up, stepped into the line of the TV camera lenses, clicked her heels together, turned and looked directly at me, hoisted her arm up in the Nazi salute and literally shouted, “Seig Heil!”

I was told my expression on the 11 o’clock news was priceless.

After the meeting I sought out the lady. I asked her what I did to deserve being compared to Hitler. She told me the remark wasn’t directed at me but the speaker who had spoken before me adding that it took her a bit to come up with how to respond to him.

People in passionate situations often say things that are incredibly stupid and aren’t even aimed at the target of their frustrations.

As far as being threatened, there was one incident I wasn’t even aware of until it was addressed.

It involved someone angry that didn’t like the fact I led a successful effort on the board to terminate the superintendent.

They made angry remarks in a gathering of three people. It involved making a comment about a gun and getting justice.

I heard about it after Lincoln Police Sgt. Bob Barroso was told of the comments by an individual who heard it. The sergeant then went and talked to the man who made the comments.

Sgt. Barroso, based on a number of factors, determined it wasn’t what today we’d call a credible threat. The sergeant ascertained the guy was simply letting off steam, and had expressed remorse about what he had said.

After that, Barroso contacted me and apprised me of the situation. I’m not going to lie. It unnerved me at first. But over time when my path crossed that of the man who made threatening remarks in anger and frustration our interactions were cordial and devoid of malice.

I know is sounds kind of Pollyanna especially given how social media zealots today won’t let anything rest, but sometimes our reaction to an overreaction is to up the ante and to overreact as well.

Threats that are serious and credible should be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law.

But even then it doesn’t raise it to the level of a federal crime.

We need to entrust local law enforcement to do its job. It is not wise to equate every loose cannon that spews words in anger in the public square to the federal equivalent of terrorists commandeering jetliners and flying them into the twin towers of the World Trade Center.

Time to put an end to mixed messages over public health

Gallows humour tempts us to note that Covid 19 now makes hopes of “a meaningful Halloween” less likely. Then again, for the second consecutive year, children will be discouraged from collecting that figurative “penny for the púca” – or go trick or treating, if you really must use that Americanism.

et there is only a short span in young lives that allows them to dress up to charm and/or harass the neighbours for seasonal goodies at the Festival of Samhain. So this is another indicator of the depredations of Covid 19 and its impact on younger  people.

In a more serious vein, as we await real news of pandemic restrictions, the authorities give us a flurry of thinking out loud, and this carries conflicting signals suggesting various power struggles.

The official timeframe from the Government and its high-profile health advisers is as follows. The Nphet advisory committee will gather on Monday to formulate its counsel for the Cabinet. Ministers will decide on Tuesday about what will happen to the nation, three days after that. Yet that timeframe did not really seem to matter yesterday as the advisory side and the Government hefted straws into the wind.

First off, those Fine Gael Simons, Coveney and Harris, took to the airwaves to give us their upbeat Pollyanna impersonations. Both strongly suggested some form of further restriction easing will happen.

Mr Harris, the former health minister who is now in charge of higher education, said that thanks to vaccines the Government had a range of choices, and restriction easing could continue in tandem with a redoubling of public health precautions. Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney went further, giving his view that restrictions will be eased on Friday, although perhaps not as liberally as flagged.

That all contrasted with Taoiseach Micheál Martin’s straight assertion of no guarantee on the October 22 easing of restrictions. This is a pattern we have seen during  this pandemic, with Fine Gael often on the more liberal side.

But after that, the deputy chief medical officer put out a social media video that bluntly advised people to work from home where possible as Ireland moves into the autumn and winter. Dr Ronan Glynn said swathes of Irish society are open and people are mixing on a scale “far greater than at any point in the pandemic to date”. Again, we note that Nphet have yet to meet, much less advise the Government of their findings. More than that, the Government is already offering guidance on a phased return to workplaces.

Surely, the time has come for more coordinated messaging to a Covid-weary public.

90,000 Chapter 3. Pollyanna’s Arrival – Pollyanna

Chapter 3. Pollyanna’s Arrival – Pollyanna – Eleanor Porter

Some time later a telegram came. It announced that Pollyanna would arrive in Beldingsville the next day, June twenty-fifth, at four o’clock in the afternoon. After reading the telegram, Miss Polly made her way to the attic room with a scowl. She examined her meticulously. The room contained a small, neatly made bed, two hard chairs, a chest of drawers without a mirror, and a small table. There were no curtains on the windows, and not a single picture adorned the walls. All day the sun was burning the roof mercilessly, and the small room was heated like an oven. The heat intensified due to the fact that the windows were not equipped with insect screens and had to be kept closed. A large fly was beating against the glass, buzzing angrily.

Miss Polly swatted the fly by slightly raising the window, threw it out into the street and closed the frame tightly again. Then she straightened a chair and left the room with an equally sullen look.

A moment later she stopped at the kitchen door.

“Nancy,” she said. “I was in Miss Pollyanna’s room and found a fly there. Apparently, someone was opening the window. I ordered insect screens. But until they are ready, I ask you to see that the windows in Miss Pollyanna’s room do not open. My niece will be arriving tomorrow at four o’clock in the afternoon. I want you to meet her at the station. Timothy will lay the open wheelchair and you will ride with him. The telegram said: “Blond hair, red check cotton dress and straw hat.” To this I cannot add anything. But I think you will recognize her anyway.

– Ok, ma’am, but … you …

Despite Nancy’s inarticulate muttering, Miss Polly understood perfectly well what she was trying to say.

– No, – she sharply objected, – I will not go. There is no need for this. I hope you understand everything?

And turning, Miss Polly left the kitchen with a sense of accomplishment. In her opinion, preparations for the arrival of her niece ended in the best possible way.

Before she had time to leave the kitchen, Nancy, who was ironing at that time, pressed the iron into the towel with force.

– “Blond hair, red check cotton dress and straw hat.” “I cannot add anything to this. But I think you will recognize her anyway, ”she mimicked the hostess. “If I were you, I would be ashamed, Miss Polly. If my only niece would travel to me across the entire continent, and I would know almost nothing about her and would not even want to go to meet me! What a disgrace! That’s what I’ll say: shame!

And completely angry Nancy for a long time expressed her indignation at the innocent towels.

The next day, at exactly twenty-four, Timothy and Nancy drove out of the house in an open wheelchair. Timothy was the son of old Tom, and in the city it was often said: if old Tom is Miss Polly’s right hand, then Timothy is the left. He was a good-natured young man of extremely attractive appearance. Although Nancy had recently worked for Miss Polly, they had already become friends with Timothy, and chatted with pleasure whenever they met. However, now Nancy was so excited about the mission entrusted to her that she could not even talk and, to Timothy’s surprise, they made almost all the way to the station in silence. When they finally got there, Nancy jumped out of the carriage and hurried onto the platform. Blond hair, red-checked cotton dress and straw hat, she kept saying to herself, trying again and again to imagine what this Pollyanna would be like?

Timothy caught up with Nancy on the platform.

“You know,” Nancy told him, “it’s best if Pollyanna turns out to be quiet, reasonable, and doesn’t drop knives on the floor or slam doors.

– I really don’t know what will happen to all of us if she turns out to be different, – Timothy answered with a laugh, – just imagine, Nancy, Miss Polly and an obstinate child under one roof! Ouch! He suddenly shouted.- The train is already coming! Can you hear the whistle?

– You know, Timothy, I think it’s awful of her that she sent me here! – blurted out Nancy and rushed to the other end of the platform. It seemed to her that from there she would be able to better see the passengers who would get off the train at their little station.

Soon Nancy saw her. Two light pigtails, a face covered with freckles, eyes, intensely looking out for something … And, on top of that, a red-checked dress and a straw hat. Well, of course it’s Pollyanna!

Nancy remained in place for some time; she needed to stop trembling in her knees.Having coped with a little excitement, she went up to the girl.

Are you Miss Pollyanna? She asked. In the next instant, two tartan-sleeved arms closed around her neck, and Nancy almost suffocated in the embrace.

– Oops! I’m so glad! So glad to see you! Pollyanna shouted into Nancy’s ear. – Well, of course, I’m Pollyanna! I’m so glad you came to meet me! I dreamed about it so much!

– Have you dreamed? – asked Nancy, who was completely stunned by this statement. She decidedly could not understand how Pollyanna not only found out about her existence, but even dreamed that she would meet her?

– Have you dreamed? Nancy asked a second time, trying to put the knocked hat back in place.

– Well, yes. All the time I was driving, I tried to imagine what you are! The girl exclaimed. And, standing on tiptoe, began to carefully examine Nancy. – And now I saw you! And I know what you look like! I’m glad that you are!

Nancy did not know what to do with herself out of embarrassment. But then Timothy came up to them, and she felt a little better.

“And this is our Timothy,” she babbled barely audibly, “do you have a suitcase, Pollyanna?

– Well, yes, there is, – the girl answered importantly.- Women’s help bought it for me [1]. A brand new suitcase. Isn’t that very generous of them? After all, they so wanted to buy a carpet for the church! Of course, I don’t know how much red carpet you can buy instead of a suitcase, but I think that would be enough for half an altar. Do you think so too? I have such a small piece of paper in my bag. Mr. Gray said that this is a receipt, and I must give it to you, and you will receive my suitcase. Mr. Gray is Mrs Gray’s husband. They are relatives of Pastor Carr’s wife. We drove together from the Far West. You know, they are just charming people. And here is the receipt! She exclaimed, removing a piece of paper from her bag.

Here Nancy instinctively took a breath. She just felt that someone should do it after such a long speech. Then she glanced furtively at Timothy. But he turned away and they never managed to meet their eyes.

Then they got Pollyanna’s suitcase and went to where they had left the carriage. The suitcase was put in the back, and Pollyanna squeezed into the seat between Nancy and Timothy. While everyone was settling down, Pollyanna chatted incessantly or asked something. At first, Nancy had time to answer, but soon she became desperate and fell silent in exhaustion.

How beautiful! Said Pollyanna. – Is it far? I love to ride in a stroller so much! But if it’s not far away, I won’t really regret it, because I will be so glad to see where we arrive. Oh, what a beautiful street! I knew it was very beautiful here! Dad told me …

At this phrase, her throat caught a spasm, and she stopped.Nancy looked at her and saw tears in her eyes. But a second later, Pollyanna was completely in control of herself and began to mumble with renewed vigor:

– Dad told me about your city, and Mrs. Gray said that I must explain to you why I am in a red plaid dress. She said that you might find it strange. But among the latest donations to the Mission, not a single black dress was found. There was only the top of a black velvet dress. But Pastor Carr’s wife said that he was completely unsuitable for me, and he also rubbed on the elbows and on the folds. When they saw this, some of the Women’s Aid wanted to buy me a black dress and a hat, and some decided to spend that money on the red carpet for the church, and Mrs. White said it might be better that way. I, he says, do not like children in black dresses. That is, she does not like children, but when they are dressed in black clothes.

Pollyanna took a deep breath. Taking advantage of the pause, Nancy managed to insert: – Well, in my opinion, the color of the dress does not matter.

“I’m glad you’re looking at this exactly as I do,” Pollyanna said, and a spasm seized her throat again.- Of course, – she added sadly, – in black clothes it would be much more difficult for me to be happy …

– To be happy ?! Nancy exclaimed. Pollyanna’s words startled her so much that she did not even let her finish.

“Well, yes, rejoice,” Pollyanna continued calmly, “I’m glad my dad is in paradise now. After all, he is now with his mother and the rest of the children. He himself told me that I should be happy. But it’s still very difficult for me to be happy. Even in spite of the red dress. After all, I need him so much! Mom and other children have God and angels there, and I have no one left but Women’s Help. But now I’m sure it will be easier for me. After all, now I have you, Aunt Polly! I am so glad that I have you!

Here the sympathy with which Nancy listened to the unfortunate little creature was replaced by horror.

– Dear Pollyanna! You’re wrong! I’m not your Aunt Polly. I’m just Nancy.

– Aren’t you Aunt Polly? – the girl whispered in confusion.

– No, I’m Nancy. I never “thought that I could be confused with your aunt. There is nothing in common between us.

Timothy quietly burst into a fist, but Nancy was very upset by this story, and she was not up to jokes.

– But then who are you? Asked Pollyanna. – You are not at all like any of the Women’s Aid.

Timothy could no longer contain himself and laughed out loud.

– I’m Nancy. Miss Polly’s maid. I do all the housework except washing and ironing large items. That’s Mrs Durgin’s part.

– Is there actually Aunt Polly? The girl asked anxiously.

“Oh, you shouldn’t doubt that,” Timothy assured her. – Still as it is! Pollyanna immediately calmed down.

“Well, then it’s all right,” she said cheerfully.

For a minute they drove in silence. Then Pollyanna spoke again:

“Actually, I’m glad she didn’t come to meet me. Because that way I would have recognized her, but now I don’t know her yet. And then, now I have you.

Nancy blushed. Timothy immediately turned to her.

– Well, the young lady gave you a subtle compliment! He exclaimed and smiled. – If I were you, I would say thank you to her.Why are you silent, Nancy?

“I was just thinking about Miss Polly,” replied Nancy, completely embarrassed.

“I’m thinking of her too,” Pollyanna said cheerfully. – I’m so interested! You know, she’s my only aunt, and for so long I didn’t know at all that I had her. And then my dad told me about her. He said that she lives in a beautiful house on the top of the hill.

“Right,” Nancy replied. – Look. See that big white house over there with green shutters?

– Oh, how cute! And there are so many trees and grass around it! I have never seen so much greenery at once! Nancy, is my Aunt Polly rich? Asked Pollyanna.

– Yes, miss.

– Oh, I’m so glad! It must be so great when there is a lot of money! We have never had a lot of money! And none of the acquaintances – too. Here are just the Whites. They are quite rich. They have a carpet in every room, and on Sundays they eat ice cream. Does Aunt Polly have ice cream on Sundays?

Nancy shook her head. She tried to imagine Aunt Polly eating ice cream on Sundays, and she began to laugh. Her lips quivered, and she and Timothy exchanged sly glances.

– No, miss, your aunt probably doesn’t like ice cream. I, in any case, have never seen anything like it on her table.

Pollyanna’s face was drawn in surprise.

– Oh, she doesn’t love? It’s a pity! Can’t imagine how you can not love ice cream? But on the other hand, I can be glad that now my stomach will not hurt. I ate so much ice cream at Mrs. White’s that I often had stomach pains afterwards. Does Aunt Polly have any rugs?

“There are carpets,” Nancy confirmed.

– In every room?

“Well, almost every one,” Nancy replied, and suddenly frowned. She remembered the small room in the attic, which certainly had no carpet.

– Oh, I’m so glad! Exclaimed Pollyanna. – I love carpets so much. We didn’t have them. Only two very small ones. They came to us from charitable donations. One was full of ink stains. Mrs. White still had pictures on the walls. Such beautiful pictures! On them were little girls on their knees, and a kitten, and lambs, and a lion.Of course, they were not all together, but separately. It is in the Bible that the lion and the lambs will someday be together, but in Mrs. White’s paintings, they are still separate. In my opinion, beautiful paintings are simply impossible not to love, right?

“I… I don’t know,” Nancy replied, her voice trembling.

“And I really love pictures,” the girl continued. – We did not have paintings at home, because they are very rare among donations. Only once did we get two. But one turned out to be so good that my dad sold it and bought me shoes. And the other was so decrepit that the frame immediately fell apart, they did not even have time to hang it on the wall. I cried so much … And now I am even glad that we did not have beautiful things. Because now I’ll like the ones Aunt Polly’s got better. After all, I did not have time to get used to them. This, you know, is like new colored ribbons that you find in donations after donating some faded ones. Oh, this is just a stunningly beautiful house! – She abruptly changed the subject, for it was at this moment that Timothy turned to the House on the Hill.

When they finally stopped, and Timothy began to untie the suitcase, Nancy went up to him and whispered softly:

– Now you don’t even dare to stutter that you will leave here, Timothy Durgin. In any case, I will not quit here, even if someone promises to pay me twice as much.

– Quit? No way in the world! The young man whispered fervently and laughed merrily. – Now you can’t pull me out of here by force. With this girl it will be more fun here than in the movies.

– You just have to have fun! – Nancy was indignant. “But I think the poor thing will have a hard time as soon as she heals with her aunt. I’m afraid she can’t do without a reliable protector. If so, I will protect her, ”she said firmly.

Then she went up to Pollyanna and, taking her hand, walked resolutely up the broad staircase.

Composition based on the novel “Pollyanna” by Eleanor Porter

Pollyanna

Since childhood, the book has been and remains for me a great secret and a wonderful companion. She revealed to me the beauty of my native word, gave me the opportunity to visit other countries, introduced me to many heroes who became my good friends. I like to read different books, but most of all I like those that tell about the life and fate of my peers.

During the summer holidays, I also did not leave her without my attention, because it is so pleasant to relax with them.

I enjoyed reading the novel Pollyanna by the American writer Eleanor Porter .The main character of the work is the girl Pollyanna. She is my age. Outwardly, the heroine is not very beautiful. “… a thin girl in a red plaid dress with hair braided in two thick braids … a beautiful face peeking out from under a straw hat” – this is how the author depicts her portrait. And I immediately saw my classmate Tanya. For some reason, I didn’t want to read (Tanya, by her behavior, few people like in our class). But the writer emphasizes the unusual beauty of Pollyanna’s blue eyes, which reproduce her beautiful and pure soul.

Page after page, the book gradually opened for me a difficult and unusual story of the life of a little heroine. Many trials fell to her lot: she was left an orphan early, then received a severe spinal injury and was bedridden. How I felt sorry for her! But my mother said that this should not be done, because Pollyanna is a strong girl (my mother read a novel with me). Indeed, the girl, in spite of everything, enjoys every day and tries to help everyone she meets.Under her influence, the inhabitants of the town of Beldingswil are changing, who are used to living only for themselves, locked in their petty world. This is Mrs. Snow and Mr. John Pendleston, disabled, and Nancy the maid. And how Pollyanna is preoccupied with the fate of her peer Jimmy Bean!

And most of all, Aunt Polly is changing, who before the arrival of Pollyanna lived according to strict laws, did any business with a heightened sense of duty. She did not know how to rejoice and love for real. Pollyanna, with her soulfulness and ability to enjoy everything that happens in life, makes her aunt become the best, kind and sincere. And later he finds happiness with the doctor Chilton. Under the influence of an eleven-year-old girl, the characters in the novel change, find their happiness, family comfort.

I really want to be like Pollyanna, a little girl who knew how “to play with joy” . I want to be just as sincere, frank and sincere, to please my mother, father and everyone who lives next to me and cares about me with my good deeds and support. I will definitely tell Tanya’s classmates about Pollyanna and advise you to read the work of Eleanor Porter.I believe that she, too, will change for the better under the influence of this heroine. After all, as the writer asserted: “… everyone carries light well, you just need to be able to open your soul and give this light to people.” May this light of joy and sincerity be next to me, with everyone who lives on our beautiful planet Earth. And then peace, harmony, goodness and mercy will reign among people, and God’s grace will come to everyone. I believe that.

“Always rejoice.Pray incessantly. Thank you for everything. ”
(1 Sol. 5: 16-18)

For the Christmas holidays, the permanent artistic director of the Comedians Theater, Honored Art Worker of Russia Mikhail Aleksandrovich Levshin, as part of the Theaters for Children program, presented the premiere of the play Pollyanna based on the novel of the same name by Eleanor Porter. Over the past century, the popular work of the American writer has undergone several film adaptations, was reworked in the musical genre and adapted for staging in the theater.

A wonderful, kind, light fairy tale for the whole family. The pastor’s eleven-year-old daughter, orphaned, goes to her aunt – a lean prim lady of strict rules. Aunt Polly (Yulia Burtseva) is trying to make her own likeness of her niece, but that was not the case! A girl with a lively character, talkative and cheerful, played by Zhanna Kupriyanova, resembles either Tom Sawyer in a red checkered dress, or Pappy the Long Stocking, and does not at all want to live by the rules established in the house. She admires everything in the world, astonishing people around her, calling her a “strange child”, and imperceptibly for them becomes a little sun, warming the souls and hearts of elderly and often unhappy people.

And the whole secret is that, having lost his spouse and other children, the girl’s father, the pastor, found himself in a dead end in life. And he and his only surviving child, Pollyanna, had no choice but to cry. Then, turning to Holy Scripture as the only hope, he noticed that it says 800 times that it is necessary to rejoice in everything, whatever life brings. And so, together with his daughter, he comes up with a game. Its plot is simple: in any situation, in any environment, to find something for which you can be grateful and what to rejoice at.Even in misfortune – that the worst has not happened. And the harder it is to find a reason for joy and its source, the more interesting the game is!

The first friends of Pollyanna are the maid Nancy, a cheerful and sympathetic girl (Elizaveta Chernova) and the old gardener Tom (Yegor Shchedrov), who resembles an old forest man. The girl first helps to feel the joy of the elderly Miss Snow, then to the pedantic Sir John Pendleton (Ilgiz Bulgakov) suffering from loneliness, and, finally, to her aunt to find the already lost love in the person of Dr. Chilton, played by Roman Yakushov.

The ingenious, in essence, the plot is complemented by mystical scenes with flying multicolored boxes in which dreams, hopes and love are hidden, which never found a way out into the world, if not for this extraordinary girl. There are also characters without heads as a symbolic image of people who have lost their faces, who do not see each other due to bouts of envy and jealousy. And even the image of the skeleton itself, falling out of the closet, like a secret secret from a tightly closed soul. These paintings evoke fear and horror in the audience.

But, as if by magic, life around Pollyanna is gradually improving: people become kinder and more sympathetic, lonely hearts find each other, homeless animals find shelter in her aunt’s house, orphan boy Jimmy (Roman Ishimov) is adopted by Sir Pendleton.

But a misfortune happens to Pollyanna herself … On an autumn day she is hit by a car rushing at high speed, and she loses the ability to walk. A difficult test falls to the lot of this girl, who helped others so much. And it becomes very difficult for her to find a fulcrum in herself and those around her. It would seem, what is there to be happy about? But even such a dramatic situation helps people who have been looking for communication for a long time in their souls, but by the will of circumstances have moved away … In the grief that has befallen them, they find the strength to pull their skeletons out of the closets and stretch their hands towards each other, giving joy and hope to their pupil.

As a result, a miracle happens: a professor from a distant clinic finds a way to help Pollyanna.Almost a year later, she returns home herself, realizing what kind of miracle it is – legs, because they are almost like wings! And the soul-winged girl finds in healing another reason for happiness and finds peace and tranquility in the bosom of the family she herself has recreated.

It is impossible to watch the performance of the artistic director of the theater without a lump and tears rolling up to the throat, and at the same time absolutely extraordinary, some kind of childishly pure joy! Thanks to the director-director and the entire acting ensemble for the presented minutes of unique experiences and the opportunity to once again feel like a careless child under the wing of the wise Providence of God.

The play “Pollyanna”. The game “in joy”

The play “Pollyanna”. Playing “for joy”

The Apostle Paul said: “Always rejoice!”But does everyone know how to rejoice sincerely? People became cynical and angry. And when they see a person smiling quietly to himself, they are surprised: “Isn’t everything all right with him? He is sick?”. It is even stranger when a person rejoices that mom and dad are in heaven, they no longer suffer, as well as that he has nowhere to live. Such is the representation of little Pollyanna in the play of the same name by Yuri Lottin, based on the 1912 novel by the American writer Eleanor Porter.

Pollyanna’s father, a Protestant pastor, invented a “joy” game. Its meaning was to look for the positive in everything, no matter what happens to you. The girl remembered the game. It was hard for her when her father died, and when she was sent to live in the house of a rich aunt Polly – her mother’s own sister, a strict, pedantic, callous woman in whom only a sense of duty was alive. But Pollyanna had not forgotten the rules. Her main weapon in the gray and cruel world was the ability to find positive sides in everything and a sincere soul.

The girl gradually won the love of the townspeople. Her aunt’s heart thawed too. When Pollyanna was hit by a car and was bedridden, her aunt really understood how dear to her niece.

The premiere of the play was presented on November 17 at the Theater of the Young Spectator by director Stanislav Vasiliev. There were enough spectators in the hall: parents and children, teachers and students, young people and the elderly.

The curtain opened to the applause of the audience, waiting for the miracle. And the hall plunged into history, amazing for the world in which we now live.It is about a bright, talkative, exalted and sometimes overly obsessive girl, Pollyanna Whittier, who charged everyone around her with optimism, taught her to look for joyful moments in any situation. Vasin’s love, who played the role of Polliana, seemed to have returned to childhood. The actress ran, jumped, climbed to hug, fiddled with her dress, sat down, got up, ran again, managing to speak without stopping.

Pollyanna got to know all the inhabitants of the town, visited her neighbors, tried to solve the problem of an adult that was not a boy’s age, and was constantly rejoicing at something, repeating over and over again: “I am glad!”In a word, everywhere she poked her freckled nose. But then a disaster struck. Caught up in a car and bedridden, Pollyanna had to give up her visits to her many friends. And then the people themselves reached out to the wonderful girl, because she instilled joy and happiness in every home. With her help, Mrs. Snow, a bedridden woman, got into a wheelchair, began to get out of the house, began to knit, constantly rejoicing that her hands were healthy, as opposed to her legs. Boy Jimmy Bean, Pollyanna’s gray-haired homeless friend, found his father in the person of John Pendleton, who for a long time lived alone and did not speak to anyone. The girl lay in bed for a long time, waiting for a miracle and never ceased to rejoice. For example, the fact that she does not have smallpox and measles … The play ended with the girl’s miraculous healing, to which everyone was very happy.

Certainly, the stage director of the play Stanislav Vasiliev tried to make each character bright. And it worked out, though sometimes it seemed that the actors overdid it a little. Pollyanna turned out to be overly intrusive and hyperactive, but undoubtedly amused the audience.Aunt Polly, on the other hand, appeared to be overly stern and arrogant. It seemed that she would never love her niece. But the fact that her heart was softened made everyone happy.

The performance did not leave the audience indifferent. The kids fearfully and embarrassedly rose to the actors with flowers. The audience did not let the artists go for a long time. However, those who came to see the performance would like to make a comment. Despite the warning, telephones rang, bags rustled and a loud cough was heard from all corners of the hall. This can interfere with both the artists and the audience themselves, so it’s worth looking after yourself and being a little more cultured.

Despite everything, Yuri Lottin’s play deserves attention. She teaches us to be happy, and this ability is essential for everyone today.

Pollyanna – VO! Circle of books – LJ

A game of joy

We have already encountered this name in our blog more than once – Pollyanna. And we were asked to tell about the book by E. Porter “Pollyanna” in more detail. So, let’s begin …

In the courtyard of the public library in Littleton (USA) there is a monument – a girl in a fluttering dress with her arms wide open like wings. It was opened in September 2002 and features the most optimistic and joyful heroine of the books – Pollyanna.

Admirers of the work of the author of the book, Eleanor Porter, gather here annually and hold literary festivals. Pollyanna was one of the most popular books in pre-war America.Newborn babies were often named after her, as well as various commercial companies and even a variety of milk. By 1920, there were 47 editions of this novel. The book has been translated into other languages and published in several countries. Pollyanna’s Clubs were being set up all over America, and not just for children. The famous silent film actress Mary Pickford paid Porter an astronomical sum for the rights to film the novel. The book has been filmed several times in the United States and other countries. In 1960, a film was directed at the Walt Disney Studios, and the leading actress, Hayley Mills, received the prestigious award. When working on the film, the directors did not meet the time allotted to them – the film version turned out to be 20 minutes longer. But Walt Disney himself, as an exception, allowed such liberty – he was so pleased with the work. Following the successful release of the film, Walt Disney’s brother, Roy Disney, released a thousand key rings featuring Pollyanna and Lincoln’s words: “When you look for the bad in a person, you will surely find it.” The stories about Pollyanna have not lost their appeal to the reader today. They are constantly published in large circulations both in English and in many other countries.Theater and film directors continue to turn to them today. Modern artists have created a computer game, invented a doll with the name of the heroine. The play “Pollyanna” is a success at the Moscow Youth Theater. There are musical versions of the novel.

How did this beautiful and sunny girl with freckles conquer the world? Why is she called the most optimistic literary character? Let’s talk today about this book and its author.

American writer Eleanor Hodgman Porter, author of the novel “Pollyanna”, was born on December 19, 1868 in St.Littleton (New Hampshire). Since childhood, she was very fond of singing, dreamed of a career as a singer. She graduated from the conservatory in Boston, performed at concerts of secular music, and sang in the church choir. At 24, Elinor marries a businessman, moves to New York and tries to engage in literary work. The first published works were very successful, especially the novel Cross the Stream (1907). In 1913, Pollyanna was published – an exciting story about a girl, a talker and an inventor who tried not to be sad and to find a way out of every difficult situation. The book immediately met with an enthusiastic reception from readers of all ages, and the demand for it could not be met by millions of copies. The writer received many letters asking to continue the story of her unusual heroine, and in 1915 a second book appeared – Pollyanna grows up, which was also met with great enthusiasm by the publishers. And although Porter later wrote several more novels for adults and many short stories, the obituary, published in the New York Times in 1920, the day after her death, bore a short but expressive title: “The author of Pollyanna is dead.” “.What is this book about?

After the death of her father, eleven-year-old Pollyanna, out of a “sense of duty”, was taken in by the stern aunt Miss Polly Harrington. Pollyanna is the complete opposite of Polly: very lively, talkative and cheerful. Her father, John Whittier, was a poor pastor in a small church and left behind only a few books. Aunt Polly lives alone in a huge house, inheriting a large fortune after the death of all her loved ones. She gives Pollyanna a room in the attic, without a mirror, with bare walls and practically no furniture, because “she wanted to be as far away from the child things. “From the atmosphere of parental love, Pollyanna moved to a world of strict rules and prohibitions. And it would be difficult for an orphan in this gloomy house, but the father passed on to his daughter an invaluable gift – he taught her the Game of Joy. The girl knows how to enjoy life under any circumstances, to see the best side in everything. And the harder it is to rejoice, the more difficult and fun the Game becomes. Here is how Nancy tells Aunt Polly about this game: “One day she received a pair of children’s wooden crutches from church donations when she so wanted to have a doll.Well, of course, she burst into tears, like any child in her place. It was then that her father told her that there is no such thing in which there would be no reason for joy, and that even these crutches can be happy … – to be glad that she does not need them … “

On the first day after Pollyanna’s arrival, Aunt Polly leaves her without supper, telling her to have supper with bread and milk in the kitchen, together with the servant Nancy, to which Pollyanna replies: “What are you, aunt, I’m very glad. I love bread and milk and I really like Nancy. We dined so well together. ” All of Aunt Polly’s lectures and punishments are received by her niece with delight and gratitude, which confuses Miss Polly. This is how the girl explains the “rules” of the game to the servant Nancy: “Once I remembered that I hated my freckles, and was immediately glad that I didn’t have a mirror. Well, when I looked out the window … I felt really good. ” The always cheerful and cheerful Pollyanna annoyed with her optimism not only her aunt, but also other residents of the dull town, who believed that they had nothing to be happy about.Soon they all got acquainted with Pollyanna’s unusual game, and their lives began to change! Here is what Dr. Chilton says about it: “As far as I was able to find out, it is an omnipotent and inexhaustible desire to find a positive side in everything that has already happened or is just about to happen. In any case, stories about her funny speeches constantly reach me, and, as far as I can tell, “just to rejoice” is the main meaning of these speeches. All I would like is that I can prescribe it … and buy it the same way I prescribe and buy a box of pills. “Pollyanna’s sincerity and naivety, her forgivingness, sociability, openness are at disposal of those around her. Her main weapon against an unkind world is a sincere heart and a joyful spirit.

Even Aunt Polly sees that “… half of the town is putting on blue bows, ending family quarrels, or starting to love something that they have never loved before – all thanks to Pollyanna.” Gradually, the girl won the love of many residents of the city. Her aunt’s heart was the last to succumb.

But one day a misfortune happened to Pollyanna, which seemed to leave no hope for the best … Will she be able to overcome the misfortune that has piled on and keep joy in her heart?

The book teaches kindness. It immediately becomes clear how important it is to do good to people, and how … simple. Rejoice and thank everyone and for everything. This is the only way to make your life better, brighter. The “Game of Joy” presented to readers by Porter and her heroine warms the soul and captivates. It was not at all sentimentality, superficial optimism or inattention to the problems that life poses to a person that became the reason for creating the image of an “eternally joyful” girl; as Porter herself said: “I never thought that we should deny the existence of hardship, suffering and evil.I only thought that it is much better to greet the unknown cheerfully and joyfully. ”This is how she acted in life, and this advice of hers addressed to us sounds without edification, but with captivating simplicity and spontaneity from her lips forever alive, forever joyful and everlasting

The absolute value of this story is that it forces us to reconsider our worldview. to give to our children is education.Fate can deprive a person of everything – material well-being, connections, friends, but that inner charge, that upbringing of the soul, which the parents gave the child, will remain with him forever.
