WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING PYJAMAS

Here’s what to think about when purchasing your next set of PJs:

Budget: Are you willing to splash out on a quality pair to last you a few years, or a budget-friendly pick to get you through?

Material: If you run hot or have allergies, a breathable and hypo-allergenic material like bamboo is ideal. Cotton and cotton flannel are great if you’re after maximum cosiness and warmth.

Style: Are you into more novelty-style prints, or classic checks and stripes?

Design: Looking for a pair of pants, or a full set?

WHAT IS THE WARMEST MATERIAL FOR PYJAMAS?

Fleece is probably the warmest option, but flannelette is ideal as it is often made from pure cotton which is more breathable – allowing you to stay cosy without waking up in a hot sweat.

ARE BAMBOO PYJAMAS WARM?

Bamboo pyjamas – like those from Ettitude – can indeed keep you warm. Due to their natural thermo-regulatory properties, they have the dual benefit of keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter.

What a wonderful weekend … Girls from our yard will become women on barbecue, very young beardless guys will steal cars from their drunken fathers and smash them against the wall of an incorrectly standing house on the road, someone will crush a store standing alone on the highway, in search of alcohol, someone will set fire to a “no-man’s” dacha, and pensioners who ran out of there will be finished off with drums and cuttings from shovels along the ridge, well-bred youths, will crawl into a neighboring garden or dacha, and tulips plucked from there will give their mother…

    90,000 40. Champions

Tataurov walked, squeezing the leather handle of the bag in his left hand, and with his right hand he pushed a pack of “Kazbek” with a cane, like a hockey player pushes a ball. The pack depicted a mountain similar in power to Ayu-dag, which towered over Yalta. The brass monograms on the walking stick glittered in the sun. And there were a lot of them, these monograms, because to the one that hid the name of the previous owner, Tataurov added two dozen more of the most diverse brass letters, which are attached inside galoshes on their crimson bike lining. Just like the monograms, the sea sparkled and sparkled – Tataurov today decided to walk along the embankment, which he rarely did – he usually returned along a parallel street.

    – Ivan Vasilievich! Champion of Champions! A joyful female voice called out to him.

He stopped. On the bench, taking off the model shoes from her tired feet, sat the same neighbor at the feast at Lazar’s! Admiring the lush maturity of her forms, he hastily shifted his beautiful cane into his left hand, clutching the bag, and, bending his giant torso, kissed the plump palm.

“Glad,” he said sincerely. – What are the fates?

Putting her feet into her shoes, she jumped up, tugged at her colorful crepe de Chine dress and explained:

    – I came to visit a friend on vacation.During the day she is at work, so I sit on the embankment, studying styles. Better than any fashion magazine, – she laughed and, suddenly looking down with shame, added: – Only bedbugs pester a friend, horror.

    – My house is at your service, – Tataurov was found. – I don’t have this stuff.

She raised her eyes and spoke uncertainly:

    – Inconvenient. Yes, and embarrass you.

“What tenderness in our poverty,” he cordially reassured her.

“Well, maybe for one night…”, still hesitating, the woman agreed.

“Damn! What is her name? – Tataurov reproached himself. – After all, all evening I put snacks for her … “, and found:

    – Excuse me, your middle name? I forgot.

“Just call me Adelaide,” she smiled coquettishly.

“Come on, Adelaide,” he suggested, and realizing that there would be no refusal, he bent his arm into a ball.

Despite her fullness, she seemed to flutter next to him, adjusting to his huge step.

We went to a grocery store, where the already heavy bag became even heavier. In the bend of a narrow street, climbing uphill, Tataurov stopped and, looking up, lightly twirling his cane, pointed, as to his own villa, to a stone house that struck the eye with its sharpness and resembled a ship:

    – My apartment.

He saw that Adelaide admired the mansion, its turrets, pretentious windows, narrow openings, steep galleries, terraces and balconies, black lace iron bars and weathercocks.

And the door near the house was special – huge, carved, with old mirrored glass in frosted monograms – ministerial.Confidently opening it, he let Adelaide up the stairs. The common kitchen, painted in the official way with dark green oil paint and smelling of borscht and cats, made her grimace, but he knew that his door would again amaze the guest’s imagination with its ornaments, different even in the meager light of a lamp suspended in the unattainable height of the corridor.

A stucco oval on the ceiling, from the heart of which a chandelier hung, finally defeated Adelaide. She stood still, not taking her eyes off the crystal pendants, which rang melodiously when Tataurov slammed the heavy door.

It was hardly necessary to talk about comfort, since there was rubbish in the corners, it was possible to paint on the surfaces of furniture shaggy with dust, and the old oak parquet around the carpet was trampled. But she, apparently, realized that there was no purity here – without a woman’s hand; try for a day or two – and the buffet, the piano, and the pier glass will shine, lock themselves. She said so:

    – Oh, how cute you are! Only a woman’s hand is not felt.

    Parrot shouted back to her:

    – Ass is a fool.

    – So we met, – she answered resourcefully and, laughing, going up to the cage, said: – And we will make friends, okay?

Tataurov fussed, collecting on the table, jingle dishes, banging corks. Soon the tablecloth was filled with plates and bottles. In the middle of it, on an earthenware dish, lay half of yesterday’s duck, aiming at the chandelier with a leg. To top it off, he cut the cheese into thin slices and served it on a wooden board, announcing:

    – In Paris, cheese is always served on a board, – and invited: – Sil vu ple.

Adelaide chewed a little, explaining that she didn’t drink more than one glass, but then she parted and drank almost on a par with the owner. She really resembled that merchant’s wife with whom he had an affair almost fifty years ago in a monastery. The Black Sea heat made the woman naked within the limits of what was permitted, and her full arms seemed to be tied with threads. Only her hair, unlike the old one, was etched with hydrogen peroxide, but in combination with her brown eyes, it was beautiful.

Tataurov took off his combed jacket, threw a tie over the bronze sconce, tucked a napkin into the collar. Impressiveness returned to him. From time to time, screwing French words into the conversation, he seemed to himself a secular man.

    – Kutezh russ? Intimate suir? Kompren? Do you understand?

    “I guess,” Adelaide laughed boldly.

Intoxicated by the heat, wine and youth of a woman, Tataurov tried to remember something like that to finally defeat her.And he read sincerely:

    Princess Choker – Lyre Chords,

    Constellation wreaths and league ribbons.

And we are aesthetes, we are jewelers,

We are jewelers of such necklaces.

    – Oh, how wonderful! Adelaide exclaimed.

Encouraged by her, he continued to show his knowledge of art:

    – Now would Leshchenko … Remember – “At the samovar, I and my Masha”? Or “Our Marfusha, like a birch, is slender” … Or a gypsy camp … And Vertinsky ?! “Your fingers smell of incense” …

As they talked, they looked out the window, beyond which was seen a piece of the sea.The flowing foliage now and then covered him. They did not notice how dark it was, they caught themselves and went out onto the balcony. His tightness made them huddle together. Everything around was bathed in the golden glow of the full moon.

    “Sleep, sleep,” Tataurov said, yawning.

He made a bed for himself on a leather sofa and, no matter how much Adelaide refused, made her lie on the bed.

Pulling the sheet up to his chin, he secretly listened in the dark to the rustle of the silk of the dress he was taking off, how the unbuttoned buttons of a tight bra clicked, how cobweb stockings fell weightlessly to the floor. Then the springs clinked under the weight of the guest.

A viscous slumber began to envelop him when Adelaide’s capricious voice rang out:

    – Ivan Vasilievich, I’m not used to falling asleep without a fairy tale.

He shook himself and, trembling with all his body, freezing, lowered his bare feet to the floor and spat on her voice …

In the morning, feeling uncomfortable, he squinted at the woman’s flushed face. She smiled in her sleep, straw-colored hair strewn across the pillow.Dark at the roots, they betrayed a brown-haired woman in her.

He made a cautious attempt to get up, but Adelaide immediately roused herself and said:

    – And don’t think. Now I’ll give you coffee. This is a woman’s business.

When she, dressed in his terry robe, the floors of which dragged along the carpet, served him coffee and sandwiches in bed, Tataurov looked at her with a bearish shyness. He was moved and sincerely, without pretended gallantry, kissed her snow-white round palm.

All day the guest was cleaning up his neglected room, and the next morning she announced that her daughter was waiting for her. And he was counting on a whole month of such happiness! But Adelaide immediately reassured him: an eccentric, she was only going for a day, and left.

Tataurov was left alone. He reminded himself of an autumn fly, he was lethargic, everything was disgusting for him. Ah, what a gentle peace emanated from Adelaide! And he never had this.

He lived this day with incredible impatience.

But then Adelaide appeared, and the walls seemed to be parted to let in the sultry sun! She was again tender and attentive, catching on the fly his every desire, flatteringly admired his stories and frolicked like a girl, although she was about thirty-five. But what does thirty-five mean compared to seventy? Obese, pink, she drove him crazy when she began to undress. I have not experienced such Tataurov nights for a long time. And during the day, she was again unobtrusively light, because she did not even hint at marriage. And he, at first satisfied with the existing relationship, himself began to think more and more often about how to connect life with her. This is he who could not stand when women encroached on his freedom ?! But she didn’t attempt to kill herself — that’s the point!

Her trips to her daughter spurred a maturing decision. And when Adelaide had the last week of vacation left, Tataurov himself suggested to her:

    – Why should we live in two houses? Quit your job. How much they pay you at the cash desk of the hairdresser, we will cover it with my pension.Register with me.

    – And daughter? She asked uncertainly.

    – So you say that she is with her grandmother? And in the technical school – almost independent.

He was shivering with fear that Adelaide would refuse. But she, without even cussing, unexpectedly agreed.

A week later, she moved in with him with her dowry, which, with the exception of a suitcase with underwear and a painting, wrapped in wrapping paper, everything was placed in her crocodile-skinned purse.

Nothing more she could please him, as she pleased with these little things. He had enough furnishings, he was going to start a wardrobe for her himself – and in his purse were: a wax angel, a sugar egg in gold leaf and snow-white candles entwined with the same gold. My God! The dream of his youth!

And the oil painting also pleased him: his wife was very much like this naked woman in her forms.

    Adelaide explained:

    – This is from mythology. It is called “Leda”. A swan song. The swan loves once and then dies.

But his wife finally defeated him with the last detail of the dowry:

“Look what I have,” she said with a shy laugh and lifted her dress on a plump leg covered with a black stocking.

Go crazy! She was wearing unimaginably antediluvian red garters with bronze clasps in the form of two kissing cupids!

“Like you and me,” Adelaide giggled.

Where are they from? From your grandmother? It was the fashion of Tataurovo youth! He only said:

    – Fu-you, well-you – the legs are bent.

He seemed to breathe the air of the beginning of the century, dear to the heart! Looking at the cupids, looking at the sugar egg, he said pleadingly:

    – Will we sprout oats on a baking sheet for Easter? – and since she might not know why this was being done, he began to explain that dyed eggs were put in the green of oats … But Adelaide interrupted him:

    – Required! And before it will be Christmas, we will decorate the tree.

From that day on, Tataurov seemed to have moved to another planet where love and tenderness reign. Why hadn’t he thought of how good it was to have his own hearth before?

The woman was considerate, caring and gentle. He liked everything about her: her belief in omens, her prejudices, and even hoarding. However, who dares to him, Tataurova, to say that hoarding is a bad trait? Even in this, they experienced complete harmony.

He was now leading the life of an anchorite.Relaxed and complacent, in a kind of languid half-oblivion, he lay in bed until noon, feeling blissful languor. Sometimes Adelaide, having been busy with the housework, fell under the barrel without taking off her dressing gown, and both were already seized by a soft and viscous nap. In the silence, the wife whispered:

    – Give me your hand. Listen to your swan’s heart beating. Caught her, caught her in a snare.

And in the evening, if he had no lectures, rested, they went to the embankment. Tataurov put on a large blue bow tie, which two years ago was made to order by the dressmaker Taya, who lived behind his wall and bleached his hair, like his wife, and armed himself with a cane.Adelaide threw on her shoulders a fire-like red shawl in gold sequins, bought at a flea market from a sailor, put a final polish on her toilet, put on white gloves, and they went down the mountain.

On the embankment, they immediately plunged into the hubbub and hustle and bustle, into the jubilation of the daily holiday for vacationers, which, due to the approaching end, reached its climax. A crowd swam along the granite parapet, on which the lonely girls were sitting close to each other, across the entire width of the asphalt. Some walked in pairs, hand in hand, others – in companies, even families with small children who, if they were at home, would have seen a second dream. There were many panneled dresses on women and Boston suits on men. Tataurova’s tweed jacket and blue butterfly struck in this wealth with nobility and independence.

The moon floated in the serene sky, illuminating the lanterns along the embankment. Some of them hid in lush green clumps of trees and looked fabulous and mysterious. Even a slight breath of breeze did not disturb the tranquility of the foliage.

The horizon curved in a semicircle. The foamy crests of the waves gleamed with the lights of neon and argon tubes. It smelled of algae and tar – apparently from wooden piles, from the bottoms of boats. Sometimes this was mixed with the smell of perfume, powder, human sweat, and in front of the restaurant – and food.

Music burst from the open veranda of the restaurant – foxtrot after foxtrot. The singer’s hoarse voice was filled with resentment and argued:

    Johnny, you don’t love me,

    Johnny, you ruin me,

    Johnny, you don’t know me,

You don’t make appointments for me.

Occasionally a tango sounded, languid and viscous, as Tataurov remembered him in Paris. Then the wrestler stopped and significantly squeezed his wife’s plump elbow. She smiled knowingly and swayed easily to the beat of the music.

When the public on the embankment began to thin out, they climbed their native street up the hill. Adelaide allowed herself to smoke one cigarette at night. Tataurov stood on the balcony next to her. The seaside night chilled their faces. The healthy, pungent smell of the sea penetrated to the very depths of the lungs. The stars faded in the deep sky, the nimble fireflies of boats darted across the water, and Tataurov felt happy.

It started raining, it got colder. Now they went down to the embankment from time to time, except to look at the last daredevils bathing. But that was fun too. In the evenings, a deck of satin cards appeared on the table, they were thrown at a fool, at a nine, at a point – for a penny. And even when low leaden clouds crept from behind the mountains and the room became dark from the downpour, they never felt melancholy.

Christmas has rolled up in a monotonous series of days. Adelaide ran to friends to get the promised tree. And he, who had long ago decided to thank his wife for the incredible happiness she brought, visited the thrift store every morning – in the hope of some supernatural purchase. Finally, before Christmas Eve, when he had already opted for two silver foxes, the widow of the sea captain unfolded an unmatched natural fur coat before his eyes. The amount that she wrung out stunned the appraiser, and Tataurov whispered to her that he was taking a fur coat.He persuaded her to go with him to the savings bank, where the exchange of values took place.

From a successful purchase, he felt a surge of strength, beating over the edge, and waved his hand at his heart, which began to play pranks. The desire to keep the gift a secret until Christmas Eve led him to the storage room of the seaport. Do not take the fur coat to Sevastopol to Lazar? Tataurov did not have any other friends: he did not even greet the neighbors, and the dressmaker Taya, who sewed a blue butterfly according to his drawing, had an eye on him and now met him with an insulted look, like a traitor.

On Christmas Eve, already from noon, Adelaide rushed from kitchen to room, the floors of a tattered dressing gown fluttered, pink hands flashed, clinging to the Christmas tree with colored candles. A Christmas goose was languishing in the oven, it was necessary to hurry with it – the neighbors were waiting in line.

When it began to get dark and the tree was already sparkling with golden rain and glass balls, Tataurov, mysteriously grinning into a wheat mustache, announced to his wife that he would reach the department store for a tiny gift he had chosen.

Adelaide, putting a lock of hair behind her ear with her fingers glistening with goose fat, was delighted:

    – That coincided! And I wonder how to get you out of the house for half an hour?

    – Do you? – he was surprised, smiling. – Surprise?

    – Surprise, surprise. Don’t ask.

As soon as he opened the heavy door, he immediately heard the groan of plane trees and cypresses under the powerful sighs of the wind, the piercing creak of iron weathercocks on the towers of their house. There were drafts in the labyrinths of narrow streets. The sea crashed down on Yalta with a crash of lead waves, which fanned out against the granite parapet of the embankment.

Under this whistle of bad weather, he returned home with a gift, presenting comfort, warmth and a goose in the middle of the festive table. And of course, a well-dressed wife. Oh, what a beauty she will appear before him now!

He knocked ceremoniously on the room, and what he saw surpassed all his fantasies. It was not his wife who met him, but … the harlequin! A thick layer of white powder covered her face, the two-horned hat swayed, golden bells tinkled on it.

Without thinking about how ridiculous all this is with her splendor, Tataurov was fascinated … He turned his gaze to the wax angel suspended from a crystal chandelier, then to the sugar Easter egg, again looked at his wife in black and white dominoes. She really was from the dream of his youth!

    – Here … you … For your love … Hold … – he muttered in confusion, handing her a voluminous package.

Adelaide was amazed at the gift no less than he was by her masquerade. She applied a black shiny fur coat to herself and this and that, averted her eyes on her outstretched arms, looked admiringly from all sides, even wanted to rub her cheek against her delicate pile, but remembered a thick layer of plaster and, squealing with delight, put it on her shoulders …

The effect that Tataurov had dreamed of for a whole week turned out to be complete.

In the end, Adelaide hung around his neck, kissing his mustache, dangling her legs, whispering with emotion:

    – Thank you, my dear.Thank you, Santa Claus. – And bells rang melodiously on her cap.

Then, in order to more conveniently admire the present, I hung it on a hanger in the very center of the wall – on the sideboard. And then she jumped out into the kitchen, obviously causing the neighbors to laugh maliciously and maliciously with her Harlequin outfit.

Steam rushed to the ceiling from a huge baking sheet, fat crackled, the goose crust was browning and smoking, baked apples protruded from the belly of the bird.

Adelaide did not allow Tataurov to touch the goose, she performed the sacraments herself.A sharp knife juicy entered the meat, the bones crackled under its blade. And soon abundant plates with a gold rim were requested for a still life.

Sucking the bone with her plump lips, staining it with red lipstick, Adelaide raised her eyes to her husband and said reproachfully:

    – Why did you spend so much? It costs a lot of money.

Tataurov strung several cards oozing with heat on a fork at once, so tiny, the size of a thimble that they wanted to swallow them whole, admitted smugly:

    – When it comes to a beauty like you, I am a man of temper, a desperate man.

He again became prim, imposing. Alcohol took him away faster than usual, his stomach was heavy from food.

The wind blowing through the window, shook the yellow tongues of the candle flame, the glare fluttered in the specularity of the balls and beads, in the weightless silver rain richly sprinkling the tree. Ass, surprised by the unusual appearance of the room, fiddled on the perch. Behind the wall, at Taya’s, a man’s voice began to draw drunkenly:

    Driving, driving in Berlin

    Our Cossacks …

Thank God, she found herself a boyfriend, she would stop looking at Tataurov as an oath-breaker, although there was no reason for this.

Tataurov looked at his wife. As heavy as he was from wine and abundant food, she leaned back on the tall carved back of a chair and sipped a thick cigarette with delight. No, she did not sit, as ordinary mortals do, but sat in her fancy dress on the throne and was as beautiful as a queen. Even both bells froze on her harlequin cap.

Tataurov’s throat caught in her throat from her beauty and, being mad from his generosity and kindness, he declared:

    – That’s not all.By the New Year, I will have a savings book in your name and transfer all the money to it.

    – Why? She asked, looking at him with wide eyes. – I already love you.

But he saw that his breadth and generosity shook her, and, more and more moved by himself, he said:

    – I’m not young, you never know what can happen, we all walk under God … So you will be left penniless.

She made no reply in reply, as if she closed herself in, became sad, thoughtful.

The next morning he decided not to wait a whole week and, despite Adelaide’s sincere objections, softened and proud of himself, withdrew about fifty thousand from the book, leaving one hundred there for divorce, and started a book in her name.

He wanted to immediately rewrite the apartment for her, but he still waited for her birthday and did it in the summer, in July.

For the sake of such an event, they made a small “shout on the lawn”, as Tataurov called the drinks. And although Adelaide this time refused to drink, citing indisposition, – not just contentment, but happiness reigned over their feast.Tataurov all the time talked about his foresight, about his heart worn out by almost half a century of fights on the carpet … After all, he is already seventy, anything can happen, we all walk under God, like that time, he explained. And his wife poured him either brandy or tsinandali, thoughtfully sucked the pulp of a peach and for some reason looked at the door.

Outside the door, in the kitchen, one could hear Sunday fuss. The clinking of pots and voices that increased, then fell silent, and suddenly Adelaide jumped up and began to scratch her plump cheeks with long, well-groomed nails.

    – What are you? – Tataurov was frightened.

    She screamed:

    – Help! He hits me!

Realizing that his wife had gone crazy, he rushed to her, grabbed her by the shoulders, but Adelaide jerked, so that the silk Chinese robe crackled at the seams, its wide sleeves whipped up, flashing a scarlet lining, she slipped out into the kitchen.

Her face, scratched into blood, was contorted with pain, stifled sobs were heard from her throat, she was wringing her hands.

    – You see? – she called to the agitated neighbors. – And so every day! Patience has run out. Here’s what he did to the face. And the robe! Look, look! – she shook her spacious sleeve hanging by threads.

Tataurov could not understand anything, he sincerely exclaimed:

    – She’s out of her mind! Call a doctor! It is she herself! – he pointed to the bleeding cheeks.

    – Yes, yes! Doctor! And the police! Yelled Adelaide. – I’m not afraid, but what will he say? Monster! No patience! Maimed all my life! And why did I move in with him, leave my baby?

The reference to the child affected the neighbors.Everyone made a noise, shouted, interrupting each other. Taya, touching the curlers with her manicured fingers on her liquid hair, like Adelaide’s, burned with hydrogen peroxide, said:

    – I’m running away, just put on a kerchief.

    – And a doctor, a doctor! – delighted Adelaide. – Let them check which of us is drunk! I’m clean as a glass! I’m generally teetotal! .. Huh? Huh? Scared? Let’s go together! Let’s go to! Aren’t you coming? Are you afraid? I’ll go, go! Let them check that I haven’t drunk.

Tataurov’s legs gave way.Where will he go? To your execution? And without a doctor, it is clear that he was pretty good, and his wife is sober.

Hiding his eyes from his neighbors, barely stopping his heartbeat, gasping for breath, he went to his door.

    – Don’t think about running away! – Adelaide warned him maliciously, holding the torn sleeve of her robe to her shoulder and waiting for the dressmaker.

What happened was terrible in its incomprehensibility. He looked around the room with a meaningless look, in which serene happiness reigned a few minutes ago, his gaze stopped on a huge watermelon that was grown in a greenhouse and therefore Tataurov had to pay a fair amount of money for it.He grabbed him and fucked him furiously on the carpet. Bloody pieces scattered around and began to slide from the polished cupboard doors, from the pier glass. And one of them, strong, himself the size of a small watermelon, swayed on the sofa, winking at the owner with oblique brown bones, similar to Adelaide’s eyes.

Tataurov sat down at a table laden with food, squeezed his temples with his hands. An unfinished bottle of cognac stood before my eyes. He poured the wine into a capacious glass and drank it in one go. He sat in dull indifference until he heard voices in the kitchen.Male, calm, obviously, belonged to a policeman. He was interrupted by women, among whom Adelaideine and, even more, Tain, stood out for their shrillness. This one went out of her way, painting the angelic character of the Tataurovo wife, who almost licked his room, which was bursting with dirt, and washed her husband and fed him every day in a restaurant and she rolled up feasts for him – what a king’s goose she gave him for Christmas.

The worst thing is that the dressmaker was right.

The world was crumbling, chips flew from it in all directions. Tataurov looked sideways at the dressing table splashed with watermelon pulp, on the sofa, from which the watermelon was staring at him with double eyes, and, grabbing the dish with jellied meat, threw it on the floor.

    – Get out! Get out! Do you hear? Continues his art! The dressmaker yelled.

The door opened. A police lieutenant entered. Adelaide and Taya peeped out from behind him, and behind them – neighbors, multiplying in Tataura’s eyes like watermelon bones.

    – So what? Will you still fight? – Adelaide asked gloatingly, contentedly looking at the rout in the room.

    – What are you doing? And really crazy? – Tataurov muttered in an unhappy voice and explained to the lieutenant: – She has an attack of rabies. The devil possessed her.

    – Anything gets fancy due to drunkenness, I, of course, apologize, since I know your position in domestic sports, – he said.

Dexterously pushed the dishes on the table and, from time to time raising his eyes to the chaos that the owner had just created with his own hands, began to fill out the protocol, which was already half-written with the testimony of the neighbors. When finished, stretched, asked Tataurov:

    – Can’t you deny that the case happened as a result of drunkenness?

“Yes, I didn’t beat her, it’s her herself,” Tataurov objected stubbornly.

    – You are still drunk. Wouldn’t you deny it?

    – And the siskin is drinking, – Tataurov muttered, looking away. But what could he say in excuse? Her muzzle is scratched, the room is a complete rout. Oh, fool, fool – could not restrain himself, slapped a watermelon, a dish with jellied meat.He signed the verdict to himself … A dull and immeasurable despair fell upon him.

“I’m leaving,” the lieutenant said. – I hope that you will come to an agreement in a peaceful way with your wife? And about the protocol, you will come to me tomorrow, sign on a sober head. And now there is enough evidence.

As soon as the door closed behind him, Tataurov said softly and insinuatingly:

    – Maybe you are really crazy? A? Did you find such an eclipse? Maybe your mother or father were sick? It happens, it is inherited.Say – and we will forget everything. We will live as before.

She was silent, rubbing the scratches with cologne, examining them in the mirror, wincing in pain.

Tataurov began to admonish her. Finally he raised his voice. Then she cut him off abruptly:

    – Talk to me again, emigrant skin!

He hardly parted his lips, tightened with a grimace of fear, and said in confusion:

    – What are you doing? Come to your senses!

Adelaide fleetingly looked at him with a cruel, hateful glance and silently began to open the bed, fluff up the pillows.

Tataurov grabbed one of them from her, threw it on the sofa, without undressing, buried his hot face in it. He was broken by the treachery of Adelaide and did not find the strength either for anger or resentment.

And the next morning, in the police, after listening to his confused confession, the lieutenant promised to hush up the case. But from the way he asked him to control himself, Tataurov realized that he did not believe everything.

When he returned home, everything was tidied up, and only sticky muddy spots with pieces of watermelon pulp were ominously dim on the pier glass and the lower doors of the sideboard.

Tataurov again began to admonish Adelaide, to appeal to her conscience, to be indignant, tried to reason, and then began to swear and shout, but all his fury broke into her stubborn silence. And the stormy crisis was again replaced by deep apathy.

And in the evening, when the voices of neighbors were again heard in the kitchen, Adelaide repeated her self-torture. Fortunately, the lieutenant for some reason did not come, although she ran after him with the dressmaker.

When it was repeated for the third time, it was as if something exploded before Tataurov’s eyes.He became furious, grabbed Adelaide, who was trying to jump out into the kitchen, by the shoulders and began to shake, shouting curses, finally slashed the dressing gown, shook the woman out of it and, remembering that he was killing a bull with his fist, only slapped her in the face. And from her Adelaide flew to the doors, which just swung open under the onslaught of neighbors.

He threw a huge bronze ashtray on the floor, threw away the wailing women, rushed out of the house.

Unhappy, with a torn soul, he confessed to the district police officer.Looking at him with haunted eyes, he said that he had hit him once, now, and asked pleadingly what he should do now.

The lieutenant seemed to sympathize and even reprimanded:

    – What are you, a man of years, so dispersed that both the apartment and all the money were rewritten in her name?

    – So she was tenderness itself! – Tataurov exclaimed sincerely. – I caught my every desire on the fly!

“Well, there are such skillful artists,” the lieutenant waved his hand.- But the facts are all against you, and I think the court will evict you from the apartment.

“The trial? – Tataurov was horrified. “She will certainly remind me of my emigration there, and a thread will be drawn … No, no, I’ll leave myself, if only the case does not come to court.” And he asked humbly and hastily:

    – I’ll leave myself. Can’t live with such a bitch? Just don’t take the matter to court.

On the street, by the way his tweed jacket sagged over his shoulders, he felt that during this conversation he seemed to have lost weight, became shorter …

He could not go home, and he did not want to.And the only friend Lazar had been hiding for half a year already, warning that he had to refrain from organizing his meetings, as the audit seemed to have found out about their machinations … Where to go?

And he still wandered home. Adelaide was gone. He found open bottles and, stirring cognac with mukuzani, vodka with kinzmarauli, got drunk. He wanted to cry out his grief to someone. In the end, can his neighbors understand? After all, quietly and peacefully he lived with them for more than one year!

And he went into the kitchen, beat himself in the chest, appealed for sympathy, and tears flowed down his sagging cheeks. These were the pitiful tears of an old man mourning his failed life.

And only the return of Adelaide, who threw a hateful glance from under her brows, silenced him. With a desperate effort of will, he regained control of himself and, looking down, left the house. On the embankment, he sat down on a bench and praised himself: “Stay, will she scratch her cheeks again? Then the court cannot be avoided. ”

He spent the night in the waiting room of the seaport, then stretching out to his full height on a wooden sofa and dozing, then jumping up in fear from sleep. He stared blankly at the window of the storage room, in which he hid a fur coat before Christmas … Ah, fool, fool – first a fur coat, then a room and a savings bank …

In the morning, sleepy, overgrown with gray stubble, he sat with the lieutenant and advised on how to live on.

    – Get out somewhere with friends, and then buy a room, – he advised.

    – What shish? On retire? – Tataurov smiled bitterly and asked timidly: – Well, how are things?

    – What things? You are entitled to half. The court will take your side, ”the lieutenant said with a touch of mocking deference.

    Cowardly uncertainty made Tataurov mutter:

    – God bless them, with things. I don’t want to go to court.

In the evening he still went to see Lazar in Sevastopol. I humbly and resignedly listened to his reproaches: he laid the world champions on his shoulder blades, broke the bulls’ necks, and then gave up the slack in front of the first counter. Lazar was so excited that Tataurov was even afraid to remind him: but who brought him to this “first person”, if not he, his friend?

    – Well, what do you want from me? Lazarus asked irritably.

    – Nowhere to live.

    – Fool, gave that kind of money. And probably on a silver platter?

Tataurov did not understand the irony and explained gloomily:

    – I put it on a book in her name, – and repeated obediently and stupidly: – There is nowhere to live.

    – Can’t I prescribe such a dunce? Snorted Lazar. – Go to the nursing home. In Yalta there is.

    – Can you help? – Tataurov perked up.

    – And I – what? Nurse? Talk to your lieutenant if he’s so good.

Well, the district police officer promised to assist in everything. And the nursing home is also a roof over your head. Tataurov sighed:

    – Will you allow me to spend the night today?

Lazarus not only allowed, but also threw a hearty dinner with booze, calling it farewell, which made it clear that their combinations were finished. Refusal of refuge was implied by itself.

For almost a week after that, Tataurov slept again in the waiting room of the seaport and every morning he visited the district police officer, who, as he expected, took over the care of the nursing home.

When at last there was a place for him, he sighed calmly and did not even regret that he had lost his pension, which from that day became the property of the almshouse, as he used to call a nursing home in the old fashioned way. And why does he need her now, when he was ready for everything, and he was never a smoker.

Old men and women greeted him indifferently, and only one young-looking woman, sitting in a carriage with bicycle wheels, was agitated at the sight of Tataurov and, looking at him with melancholy eyes, hurrying, swallowing words, explained:

    – The kitten is on the street!

Having settled down in a cozy double room, Tataurov examined the slope of the mountain from the window for a long time, but did not see any kitten. And he wanted to find him and put him on the knees of a woman offended by God!

She sat in a wheelchair all day and for some reason never left the lobby in the sun. And every time she saw Tataurov, she was overwhelmed by a strange, vague excitement, she was excited and explained to him:

    – The kitten is on the street! – And she pronounced it as if her life depended on the kitten.

He was about to bring her a kitten from his former kitchen, but realized that now it would be worse for him than death. No, he was not afraid of Adelaide, but ashamed of his pitiful tears: you can meet with the enemy every day, but not with people who saw your humiliation. Champion – and tears! It was beyond his strength to endure.

But he still forced himself to go there. The parrot is what he needs now! He imagined how he would put the cage on the lap of this patient, and, of course, the colorful, handsome man would replace her kitten!

His heart was beating desperately as he stepped over the threshold of his villa with weathercocks on turrets. The kitchen was empty. Adelaide, too, seemed not to be at home. It was not enough for her to hit a new lock. Thank God, the key turned quietly in the well. Tataurov took a breath. He saw everything around him as in a dream, as through a haze. Or maybe it’s in vain that Adelaide is not there? Let her know how old and unhappy he is. Perhaps then her conscience would have scratched her heart.

He gently stroked a sugar egg, swung the wax angel under the chandelier. Strange, he still liked them, even though they belonged to Adelaide.

He took a parrot, he doesn’t need anything else! And the cane? Oh my god, a cane!

And a few minutes later, tall, hunched over, he was already walking in the crowd of holiday-makers who cast glances at the cage with a blue-green bird, but he did not notice it.

The patient in the wheelchair again became agitated at the sight of Tataurov and spoke with longing and reproach:

    – The kitten is on the street!

She did not even look at the parrot.

Soon, tough salty winds swooped down on Yalta, clouds rushed, either covering or exposing the sun, the cold gray sea drove violent waves to the shore, and lambs gleamed white on their crests. The rains began.

Pulling a jacket over his pajama jacket, Tataurov went down to the lobby. The patient was greeted with the usual message about a kitten and immediately froze in her wheelchair. Tataurov also froze in the chair, which he put next to the carriage. Both sat in silence, not taking their eyes off the rain-splattered glazed doors. It was peaceful and quiet. Only sometimes the sound of flasks on ships flew over the sea, beat against the walls of buildings and, dying, was carried away into the gorge.

Gradually his eyes got used to the dimness of the lobby, Tataurov slowly turned his head resting his chin on a cane, glanced over a wall newspaper decorated with pictures from Ogonyok, over a wooden watch case, over a portrait of some bearded man, again stopped at the windows of the doors washed by rain.Life is broken, there is no hope. He forever left the world where women are young and beautiful, and men believe in themselves, where joy and fun reign. He had nothing left but a gloomy and meager few years. And the fact that there were few – he did not doubt: the heart more than once began to bubble in the chest, going up to the throat, forcing him to gasp for air. And it’s all Adelaide’s fault. How cunning and double-minded she was. For a whole year the spirit of delusion and lies hovered in his house, and he did not even suspect it.

Convulsions were cramping his body.He got up, bent over, as if after a wrestling match, in which his spine was injured, and went to dinner, shuffling his slippers like an old man.

Poking with a fork in the red vinaigrette from beets, he thought that Adelaide had neither a daughter nor a mother, and she just went – just to a young lover. Now it was as clear as day. Such a sensual woman. She also did not have any friend in Yalta. I must have thought of something!

One day, passing by the hairdresser’s, located behind the mirrors of the hotel, he saw his ex-wife at the cash register. She became even more beautiful, perhaps because she dyed her hair black.

Looking closer, Tataurov saw his reflection in the glass: his cheeks were flabby and crimson, his eyes became dull. He stuck out his tongue at her.

Tataurov was gladdened by her fright.

Now, almost every day, he put on his “goodbye youth” boots and walked down the maze of streets to the hotel to tease the black-haired, stout woman who had recently been his wife.Once the hotel doorman, opening the door ajar with the sparkling glass and polished brass, shook his head disapprovingly. Then he stood for a long time at the granite parapet and looked at the raging sea, as if trying to look beyond the horizon. The past seemed to him vague and incredibly distant, and courageous sorrow froze on his face.

The patient became agitated when she saw him, spun the wheels of the carriage with transparent palms to drive up to meet her friend, and, as if expecting help from him, said with longing and hope:

    – The kitten is on the street.
