The attack of adult acne: do I need to go for acne treatments in Singapore in my 30s-40s?
The period of teenage/adolescence to early adulthood is the period where one is most prone to acne. As acne is a chronic recurring skin condition, even adults in their 30s or 40s, especially women, may also suffer from adult acne.
Acne treatment singapore – causes of adult acne
Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin disease of the pilosebaceous (oil gland and hair follicles) unit in the skin, usually occurring on the face, chest and back. They are sometimes known as pimples, zits or cystic acne. Acne has a spectrum of manifestations ranging from excessive oiliness, clogged pores, inflamed pimples to acne marks and pitted scarring.
Adult cystic acne and teenage acne are similarly caused by the complex interaction of genetic factors and hormonal imbalance. The acne condition is largely dependent on the oil production of the sebaceous glands which can clog up the skin pores or hair follicles, causing whiteheads. Hormonal imbalance can cause the excessive production of sebum or oil by the sebaceous glands, enlarging the pores, and subsequently, the remaining sebum and dead skin cells on the skin will form blackheads and whiteheads (medically termed “comedones” or “clogged pores” in laymen’s term).
Gradually, comedones or clogged pores become inflamed, and infected by acne bacteria (p. acne), resulting in painful inflammation and red swellings (layman termed as “pimples” or “zits”) with or without pus, and more serious large fluid-filled cystic acne. These inflamed acne problems can eventually leave reddish-brown acne marks, and permanent pitted depressed scars on the skin.
Circumstances that can exacerbate acne in adults
- Emotional stress.
- Squeezing acne inappropriately.
- Women are more prone to acne during the pre-menstrual period.
- Some cosmetics contain certain comedogenic ingredients that can cause the formation of even more clogged sebaceous glands.
- Certain acne treatment medications, such as long-term intake of oral steroids or the excessive use of steroidal applications on the skin, the intake of anti-epileptic medications, or medications or injections with androgens (male-hormones).
- Certain illnesses such as polycystic ovarian syndrome and Cushing syndrome.
- For those working in oil or petroleum refinery industries, physical exposure to chemicals and oils may cause acne.
Q&A Session on Acne Treatment Singapore
Is acne more prevalent in men or women?
Is it more prevalent in adults or teenagers/adolescents?
More than 80% of teenagers and adolescents may suffer from acne problems. (1) In about 20% of male and female teenager and adolescent acne patients, their acne problems can continue into adulthood. (1)
Generally speaking, most adult acne patients suffered from acne during their teenage years, but for most of them, their condition will often gradually stabilize in their 20’s. Conversely, there are some patients who may not have acne or severe pimples in their teenage years, but only develop severe acne in their 30’s.
Adult acne or pimples is more likely to appear on the lower half of the face (U-zone), especially on the side of the cheeks, jawlines and chin, around the mouth, and neck, while teenage and adolescent acne is more likely to appear on the forehead, nose, and centre of the face (T- zone). (1)
When men have acne or pimples, their condition tends to be more serious than in women. In addition, people with oily skin are also more likely to suffer from acne, because oily skin is more prone to comedones formation, and as such the probability of suffering from inflammatory acne is also higher.
Teenager and adolescent acne area: T-zone
Adult acne area: U-zone
What are the most effective acne treatments in Singapore for adult acne?
Although acne is a chronic recurring skin disease, there are still several effective ways to treat and control it. Home remedies could include avoiding dairy products or creating a proper skincare regime.
A good daily skincare routine can be used to control acne through the use of medical skincare products that aim to reduce excessive oil secretion and comedones on the face.
Comedones extraction by professionally trained aestheticians via facial treatments are also to a certain degree, effective in removing stubborn clogged pores and cleansing the pores to remove accumulated debris on the skin or skin cells.
Patients should be reminded that they should avoid squeezing or extracting the inflamed acne or pimples by themselves because inappropriate squeezing can cause the skin, affected skin cells and the acne to be prone to infection and inflammation, which can further aggravate the acne or even cause acne marks or permanent scars to form.
For more severe cases of acne, especially for patients with a lot of inflamed or cystic acne and scars, it is best to be treated by experienced skin and aesthetic doctors. In such cases, oral medications such as antibiotics or isotretinoin (high dose vit-A medication) may be needed as a suitable treatment.
Topical treatments such as acne cream can also be effective. Many of these acne creams or pimple creams contain 5-10% Benzoyl peroxide or Salicylic acid. Some of these acne creams can be found over the counter at beauty care chains in Singapore. Female patients can also consider to take anti-androgen (anti-male hormones) medications as part of the treatment for this condition. Experienced doctors should be consulted, so that the patient can best understand the use of these oral medications and their associated side effects.
If I do not wish to take oral medications, are there any other options to treat my acne?
Other than oral medications, acne treatments such as chemical peels, intense pulsed light (IPL), lasers, and steroidal injections into the inflamed acne, etc. are also possible treatments.
Speak to your doctor to find out if these treatments are suitable for your case, if you prefer not to take oral medications.
What are some undesirable aftereffects of acne in Singapore?
If acne vulgaris left untreated, the active acne may leave unsightly reddish-brown marks on the skin. This is medically known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) or post-inflammatory erythema (PIE). Acne inflammation can also lead to skin damage, causing the skin cells to fail to regenerate properly, which can form the appearance of unsightly permanent pitted depressed scars.
The best way to prevent acne marks and scars is to seek acne treatment in Singapore as soon as possible. As the root cause of acne scars is the active acne cysts themselves, it is often better to have a good acne treatment plan to prevent this from worsening rather than allow it to progress to full on acne scars.
Acne scarsReddish-brown acne marks
What kind of psycho-social effects or impacts on one’s quality of life are there caused by acne or acne scars?
Adult or teenage acne is a common skin problem. There are many types of acne that could affect you at a variety of ages. Regardless of the type of acne you have, acne treatments are important to seek out at a young age. If acne treatments are not administered early, acne scars may develop and acne scar treatment will be required.
This may cause a certain degree of emotional and psycho-social distress to some adults or teenagers. The impact of having acne or deep acne scars may affect their self-esteem, acceptance from peers, or even unwillingness to engage in social activities etc, thus hurting their overall quality of life.
Conclusion: Know where to seek help, keep your acne far away!
Adult acne is a very prevalent skin problem for those in the 30’s or 40’s (especially so for the ladies), and many may suffer in silence not knowing where to seek real help. Do not despair or lose hope, as there are effective and proper treatments available for you, with the right and experienced doctors.
It is in your best interest not to delay seeking proper acne treatment singapore, as early treatment can provide you the golden opportunity to achieve the most optimal results, and to significantly reduce the impact of permanent acne scarring, thus improving your quality of life.
As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure.

Acne Scar Treatment Singapore | Aesthetic Clinic Singapore
Acne is a common condition for oily skin. When left untreated, acute acne may significantly lead to scarring. Depending on individual needs, there are various ways to control acne and reduce acne scars to achieve a smoother and blemish-free complexion.
Types of Acne
Blackheads and whiteheads
They are simply clogged pores that are not inflamed. They can be seen blocked below the surface of the skin. Oil, dead skin cells and bacteria accumulate and block pores that result to small bumps in the surface of the face. Easily treatable since they are not inflamed and do not need any serious medication.
Papules and pustules
Inflamed acne starts when a clogged pore grows irritated and becomes inflamed. It swells, appears reddish, and is painful.
They are inflamed lesions that are generally filled with pus. They may appear white or yellow in colour, and popping pustules can lead to acne scarring
Nodules are another type of inflammatory acne lesions that develop under the skin. It can be seen as large, hard, painful bumps that embed under the skin surface during the later stages of acne breakouts. They look like papules but they are larger, raw and painful to touch. They generally do not contain pus. It can last long for weeks or months, difficult to treat, and it causes dark acne scars.
They are a severe form of acne lesion that are inflamed and filled with pus when oil ducts and pores become clogged and rupture. They are generally painful and require professional medical treatment.

How to get rid of dandruff and scalp pimples: The causes, treatment, and preventive methods to know
No hair-related woe is insurmountable. Lank, lifeless locks are rescued by dry shampoo; dry, damaged tresses restored from potent potions; and the fallout from a bad haircut reduced thanks to a multitude of extension options. Is there a cure for every hairy situation? It seems so — unless, of course, your issue goes deeper, below the surface. Literally.
Be it itchiness, flakiness, or acne, there are a multitude of problems that can plague your noggin. Unlike your mane, scalp health is rarely touched upon, as dandruff, scalp pimples, and the like are thought to be unsightly, embarrassing, and therefore, unmentionable. Not for us. We sit down with haircare experts to get the dirt on the scaly sitch, below.
What is dandruff?
“Essentially, it is a skin condition that affects the scalp,” explains Leonica Kei, trichology specialist and founder of Leonica K Trichology. “The main symptoms include flaking, itchiness, and inflammation, which can be detrimental to one’s self-esteem over time.”
What causes dandruff?
Dandruff comes about when skin cells grow and die off too fast — aka before it undergoes a renewal cycle, which takes 28 days. “Both genetics and lifestyle choices play a part in dandruff growth. If skin sensitivity is hereditary within the family, for instance, then there is a higher chance of experiencing dandruff, particularly if a scalp is not well-cleansed,” Leonica elaborates. “Mostly, it has to do with factors such as stress, hormonal changes, lack of sleep, and not washing your hair frequently enough.”
Can you prevent dandruff?
It all boils down to using the right haircare products. Valerie Koh, Director of Juno Hair, recommends products containing antifungal actives such as zinc, climbazole, and selenium sulphide. “Such ingredients work to slow dandruff growth, effectively killing any yeast and reducing it to normal levels,” she discloses.
How do you get rid of dandruff?
“Believe it or not, dandruff is a condition that comes and goes. It’s entirely normal, as the skin of our scalp changes as we age,” Leonica points out. “Ultimately, it’s all about having a line-up of hair products that work for you. If you’re suffering from dandruff, I would recommend the Leonica K Trichology Clear Shampoo as well as Anti-Pruritic Scalp Tonic to keep your scalp in tip-top shape.” Valerie, on the other hand, is a fan of Sachajuan’s Scalp Shampoo, Wella SP Clear Scalp Shampeeling, and the American Crew Anti-Dandruff + Sebum Control Shampoo.
What about scalp pimples?
Think of it this way: your scalp works very much like your skin — where it can be prone to dryness, scabbing, and, naturally, acne, too. However, do note that inflammation and itchiness in excess could be an indicator of bigger problem, such a bacterial infection. When in doubt, seek help from a medical professional.
What causes scalp pimples?
According to Leonica, the scalp actually contains a higher concentration of sebaceous glands compared to other parts of the body, thus making scalp pimples a common occurrence. “Some sebaceous glands are more active, and hence, produce more oil,” Leonica clarifies. “So, pimples are an indication that the oil glands are too active and when bacteria are trapped, skin cells then begin to multiply in a faster rate. This then results in pimples.” Much like dandruff, a hormonal imbalance, lack of sleep, and even using too much oil-based hair products can also play in a part in the growth of scalp pimples.
How do you get rid of scalp pimples?
Regular scalp treatments and cleansing can help with the situation, as it prevents oil and flaky build-up. As with the zits you get on your face, Valerie finds that products containing glycolic acid, sacylic acid, tea tree oil, and benzoyl peroxide are beneficial when applied directly to bumps. This eliminates bacteria and thus speeds up the healing process.
Here’s where to buy CeraVe skincare in Singapore
You cannot talk about cult skincare brands without mentioning Cerave.
Launched in 2006, this dermatologist-developed skincare brand is all about treating and helping sensitive skin. Ceramides, a lipid molecule that alleviates dry and damaged dermal barriers, are the key ingredients across Cerave’s product line, brought to the market at a time where ceramides weren’t in many skincare vocabularies.
Thanks to being so nourishing for easily-aggravated skin on both the face and the body, Cerave began to blow up across the beauty side of the Internet, backed by influencers, dermatologists and satisfied users.
The key points people celebrate about Cerave are straightforward: the brand is affordable, hydrating, and formulated so gently and simply that there’s little risk of it worsening your skin’s inflammation. These benefits are especially applicable to people who suffer from conditions like acne and eczema, as Cerave’s dermatologist-backed prowess has proven time again that it soothes and improves against those ailments.
We know that Cerave is a great skincare brand to purchase, but unfortunately, it has little presence here. However, if you want to buy Cerave in Singapore, there are plenty of other channels to turn to, and we round them up here. Before we get to the “where”, let’s first glimpse at the “what to buy”.
What to buy from Cerave
The fantastic thing about Cerave is that its wide product range lets you use create a one-brand routine. 70 items can be daunting to weed through, so the bestsellers are as follows:

5 Acne Scar Removal Treatments In Singapore & What They Mean In Non-Cheem English
Acne scar treatments in Singapore
Search the words, “acne scar removal,” and you’ll instantly be made aware that a ton of treatments exist for this skin condition. Often times though, there can be a little too much information cluttered with technical jargon that can be confusing.
Here, we get to the bottom of the most common treatments, so you’ll know exactly what takes place when gunning for flawless skin. But first, a little background on acne scars:
Types of acne scars
One way to know what treatment will work best for you is by identifying what kind of acne scars you have. Here’s a breakdown of the most common types:
Image adapted from: The Clifford Clinic
- Ice-pick scars: Deep dot-like scars that are pitted.
- Rolling scars: Wavy in appearance, similar to a bumpy road, usually with sloping edges.
- Boxcar scars: Similar to rolling scars, but with more obvious, defined edges.
- Hypertrophic scars: Scars that protrude from the skin.
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for each type of acne scar, since it differs from person to person. This is why there’s a variety of different acne scar removal treatments available, all of which need to be tailored to your scar type and severity of scars.
Most treatments work by stimulating collagen production within the skin that restores its original – and smoother – state.
1. Laser treatments – to speed up natural healing
Lasers can be used to either zap off blemishes on the skin, or heat blood vessels to stimulate collagen growth. New cells will then grow to fill up the gaps and push up acne scar depressions. And tadah – new, rejuvenated skin.
Most modern lasers can target specific areas, so healthy skin cells won’t be affected. These treatments are also much less painful to endure.
Here are 2 types of lasers commonly used in Singapore:
- PICO MLA: Can be used to correct enlarged pores, bumpy skin texture, wrinkles and acne scars
- Edge Fractional CO2: More suitable for acne scars on larger areas like your cheeks and forehead.
Doctors can select specific frequencies to suit your skin with PICO MLA Lasers
Downtime: Less than 1 week.
Visible results: After 1 session.
2. Radiofrequency microneedling – to puncture and “repair” scar tissue
Microneedling is a process that uses fine needles to “wound” your skin, triggering the production of new collagen cells. When you add radiofrequency into the equation, you get small doses of energy delivered underneath the dermis to repair the skin from within.
This treatment usually targets deeper acne scars, and also has benefits like skin lifting, and correcting wrinkles and fine lines.
Here’s a brief explanation of different microneedling methods:
- Infini: For very deep acne scars like ice pick scars.
- Secret RF: Similar to Infini but uses a different type of radiofrequency. Some acne scars may respond better to it.
- Rejuran S: Strengthens the skin’s ability to regenerate. Best used for sunken acne scars.
Secret RF has a 64-pin handpiece for a fast treatment process that covers larger areas like the cheeks

Downtime: 3-5 days of scabbing.
Visible results: Skin’s condition will continue to improve over the next month.
3. Subcision – for more serious acne scars
A slightly more invasive acne scar treatment, Subcision requires longer downtime, but can achieve immediate results. During the procedure, a needle is inserted into the skin to detach old collagen bands to create a buffer layer for collagen regeneration under the skin.
Downtime: 1 week of slight bruising
Visible results: Immediate results and continued improvement in complexion to be expected over the next 2-3 weeks.
4. Chemical reconstruction – uses chemicals to remove acne scars
TCA Cross is a type of chemical peel where, instead of removing the top layer of your skin, it’s applied directly on acne scars. It’s a more targeted alternative that uses highly concentrated acid to trigger the growth of collagen cells.
The solution is deposited directly on the scar’s surface via a fine needle
Image adapted from: The Clifford Clinic
Suitable for mild to moderate scar types, TCA Cross is usually used with other treatments like lasers to get the best results.
Downtime: 3-4 days of redness over treated areas.
Visible results: After 2-3 sessions. Acne scar appearance will continue to improve for several months after the procedure.
5. Dermal fillers – filling depressions of acne scars
Particularly effective for visually jarring acne scars like rolling and boxcar scars, dermal fillers are used to restore lost volume in the skin. It’s made up of a gel that mimics collagen, and is injected into the skin to fill up the holes that scars have left.
The results are immediate, and the skin will absorb this gel over time, and continuously improve in elasticity and firmness. The plus point about this treatment is that it lasts for up to 4 years while looking natural.
Dermals fillers work best on areas like the cheeks, chin and temples, and it can even be used for nose contouring too.
Downtime: Slight inflammation is possible, but only needs 1-2 days to subside.
Visible results: Immediately
Our experience with acne scar treatments
Since seeing is believing, we sent fellow colleague Elaine to try them out for herself. Having struggled with ice pick and rolling scars for the past 6 years, she underwent 3 different treatments at The Clifford Clinic to improve her skin’s appearance.
The entire duration took about 4 months, with a 1 month cool-off period in between each session for her skin to heal completely. Here’s how it went:
Before each consultation, the staff will lead you to a room where you can wash your face so that the doctors can thoroughly examine your skin. Medical Director Dr Gerard Ee discussed suitable treatments for her condition, before explaining the process and downtime needed for each one.
Dr Gerard recommended Infini, Secret RF, and Pico MLA as suitable treatments for Elaine’s relatively mild skin condition. Before each session, clinic assistants applied 2 layers of numbing cream that each took about 30 minutes to settle in. For patients who cannot tahan pain, you can also opt for local anesthesia injections.
Pico MLA treatment
Both Infini and Secret RF microneedling processes were similar and each one targeted different types of scars: the machine punctures the skin much like a stapler to deliver energy into its layers. Pico MLA however, may be more uncomfortable for those with low pain tolerance. The laser sweeps over problem areas like scar clusters, for a slightly longer continuous duration.
Throughout the treatment, Dr Gerard walked her through the process and explained each step. The treatment itself only took about 15 minutes each for the cheeks, to the jaw and chin.
Recovery and results
There was minimal downtime for Elaine’s Infini treatment. She experienced swelling and redness for about half an hour after, but her skin appeared normal otherwise. On the other hand, her Pico MLA and Secret RF treatments left her with about 5-7 days of more obvious redness, though there was no post-treatment pain.
Since then Elaine’s skin has started to appear smoother, and her acne scars are now less obvious. Her skin will continue to heal and regenerate collagen over the next few months.
Acne scar treatments at The Clifford Clinic
Acne scar treatments aren’t a one-size-fits-all thing and treatments vary according to individual needs. But with the help of staff at The Clifford Clinic, Elaine managed to find a treatment that met her needs.
The clinic offers a myriad of acne scar treatments that include these 5 common ones. And being a non-surgical aesthetic medical clinic, they also offer other services, from body sculpting to face lifting, as well as hair transplants and packages for brides-to-be.
So if you’ve got acne scars to battle along with other aesthetic concerns, head on over for a consultation to find a suitable solution.

90,000 12 Best Acne Remedies – 2020 Ranking (Top 12)
Acne or ACNE (acne), acne, acne vulgaris is a chronic recurrent disease of the sebaceous glands caused by many factors.
According to statistics, at different periods of life, any rashes on the face appear in 70-90% of people, and at the age of 14-19 in 93%. That is, this topic really worries many. The best acne remedies will be discussed in our rating.
Classification of acne
Depending on the age at which they occurred:
- Acne infantum – appears at the age of 3-18 months, localized on the cheeks.Usually they pass by themselves by 1-2 years.
- Juvenile acne (teenage acne) – appears at the age of 9-25 years, the maximum peak is 15-19 years, localized in the central part of the face (T-zone: forehead, cheeks, nose, chin). They pass after hormonal changes in the body or turn into adult acne (late).
- Late acne (acne tarda) – appear after 25 years, localized mainly on the lower third of the face and neck. Almost always associated with the hormonal system, often disappear after the appointment of oral contraceptives.
- 1- Almost clear skin – a small amount of comedones (blackheads) and single papules (rashes without a purulent head).
- 2- Light – less than half of the face is affected with comedones, papules and pustules (rashes with a purulent head).
- 3- Moderate – more than half of the face is affected with a large number of comedones, papules and pustules.
- 4- Severe – the whole face is affected with a large number of comedones, papules, pustules and single nodes (large, deep inflammations)
- 5- Very severe – the whole face is affected with pronounced inflammatory acne and nodes.
Causes contributing to the onset of acne (acne)
Recent research in the field of dermatovenerology and acne treatment suggests that the first in the process of the onset of rashes is inflammation, which can be provoked by the following factors:
- Hormones. Yes, yes, this is indeed one of the most common causes of acne on the face and body. In the vast majority of cases, you can find an increased level of androgens (for example, dehydrotestosterone), or simply a high sensitivity of the sebaceous glands to androgens (sex hormones). Good news : if acne appeared in adolescence and is associated with hormones, then after 25 years and the normalization of hormonal levels (or oral contraceptives, which will be prescribed by a gynecologist), they go into stable remission (practically do not appear). Bad news : Acne can also appear after 25 years, the so-called adult acne.
- Sebum overproduction. Oily skin – as a rule, it all starts with it. Greasy shine, enlarged pores.Insufficient cleansing – and hello, blackheads, comedones and acne. Although the presence of oily skin does not yet indicate the mandatory appearance of rashes (if the hormonal background is in order, and the care is correctly selected). The good news : those with oily skin have wrinkles much later than any other. Bad news : If oily skin is constantly dry, more sebum will be produced.
- Follicular hyperkeratosis . Essentially, poor cleansing and exfoliation of old (dead) cells in the top layer of the skin. The cells accumulate and clog the duct of the sebaceous gland, which creates a plug (thickening) and an anaerobic (anoxic) environment for bacteria to grow. It can provoke rashes both on the face and not on the body. Good news : A good cleanser and exfoliator will solve the problem. Bad News : Foundation and powder also clog the ducts.
- Pathogenic microorganisms . In particular, Cutibacterium acnes (bacteria), formerly Propionibacterium acnes and Demodex (mite).Refers to conditionally pathogenic flora, normally found on the skin. With an increase in number, they are able to maintain and lead to acne and inflammation (although they are not the main provoking factor). Good news : Topical antibiotics and antiprotozoal agents are helpful (as well as physiotherapy). Bad News : If you don’t solve other problems, then not for long.
- Incorrect power supply . There has been a lot of discussion and research on this topic. To date, experts have come to the conclusion that certain foods and substances do lead to acne and other skin problems. These are milk (especially skimmed) and dairy products, fast carbohydrates (especially fast food and foods with a high sugar and starch content), foods containing a large amount of amino acids: leucine, valine, isoleucine, as well as protein shakes (BCAA). Good news : If you reduce your intake of the above foods and switch to a healthy diet (more vegetables), the risk of facial rashes will decrease. Bad News : Sugar and starch are almost everywhere.
- Overweight . High body mass index (BMI) is a risk factor for the development of moderate to severe acne in adolescents and young adults. Overweight and obesity are especially often associated with rashes in girls 18-20 years old. The good news : Sports and weight loss work well in the fight against acne as well. Bad News : More often than not, being overweight is one of several factors and additional treatment and care may be required for a good result.
In order to solve the problem of acne or take it into remission (the stage of rest, in which there are no active rashes) for many years, a comprehensive individual approach is needed. Very often it is even a change in lifestyle. The simplest and most common starting point for dealing with acne is to find a good treatment and care product. Not all of them will definitely work for you, but something will definitely work.
Finally, the information on the remedies for acne on our site is given as a guide. The correct treatment should be prescribed by a doctor! Improper use of funds can only worsen the situation. If acne on your face is not an isolated problem for you, but a serious disaster – do not self-medicate, contact a specialist.

It regulates the exfoliation process and unclogs clogged pores to promote sebum production. The concentrated formula reduces the number and size of open and closed blackheads while intensely tightening pores and reducing the appearance of acne scars.
