Permanent fountain pen inks for ink & wash sketching

I get asked constantly what ink to use if you want to work in ink and wash with a fountain pen. This information was previously included in my comprehensive 7 part guide to sketching with fountain pens, but I thought it would be useful to repeat the information on its own.

I am also gearing up to take part in Inktober this year.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: Most permanent inks are not designed to be put into fountain pens as the pigments and other ingredients can totally clog up and ruin the feed of the fountain pen. However in recent years there have been a number of permanent inks designed  especially for fountain pens using finely ground pigments. But these can still clog your pen so “use at your own risk” and make sure that you don’t leave your pens lying around unused with ink in them for long periods of time. (More about pen maintenance here). Do not put these inks into any vintage pens without doing your own research on suitability.

The four most popular brands of Permanent Ink are

  1. Platnium Carbon Ink. I have only recently started testing this ink but I know that many sketchers use it and are very happy with it. And as mentioned above they come in cartridges!
  2. De Atramentis Document Ink (please note: it is the Document ink range only that is permanent). This is the ink that I love to use. It flows wonderfully and comes in a range of colours – in fact they specifically designed a set so that we could mix any colour we want. I just love drawing with different coloured inks – you can see some of my sketches and blog posts here.
  3. Super 5. They come in a range of five different colours and are good fast drying permanent inks. I haven’t used them extensively but in my limited testing found them to dry out in the pen quicker than De Atramentis. This ink has a new formula which I haven’t tested and is now also available in cartridges.
  4. Noodlers Bulletproof or Polar range of inks. These were the first permanent inks I was introduced to and used without any problems for many years. Other people have had a problems with clogging pens (particularly Lamys) and the ink smearing when applying paint over the top but I rarely had any problems with it. There are many theories that have circulated online (such as ‘Noodlers doesn’t work for Moleskine paper’) but my own experience was different from many of those theories – there are so many variables when using fountain pens for sketching. Lexington Grey (a beautiful colour) is generally considered to be the best performing of the Noodlers inks.
  5. Sketchink by Rohrer and Klingner. I have been told that this  ink is same as the original Super5 formula (mentioned above). I find that it dries out in Lamy pens a little.

There are a few other brands of inks on the market but make sure you only use ink that is designed for a fountain pen and say so on the label.

What ink do you use?

Waterproof Fountain Pen Ink – Water Resistant Inks

A:

Because fountain pen inks are water based most are not waterproof and don’t do well when they get wet. There are many fountain pen inks that are either waterproof or water resistant. They are made from various components that make them waterproof. Each have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Waterproof Fountain Pen Ink

First let’s talk about about those that are waterproof by what they are made with.

Carbon/Particle Inks
Carbon or particle fountain pen inks are made with micro fine particles suspended within the ink. If the particles are too large it can clog the fine passages of the feed and nib.

Common Carbon/Particle Inks

Advantages of carbon/particle inks:Dis-advantages of carbon/particle inks:
  • Higher clogging risk of your fountain pen.

Iron-Gall Inks
Iron gall inks are made from iron salts and tannic acids. The composition of the ink contains corrosive acids although modern iron gall inks have improved.

Common Iron-Gall Inks

Advantages of iron-gall inks:Dis-advantages of iron-gall inks:
  • May clog your fountain pen. Old school iron-gall inks can be corrosive and damage your fountain pen but modern formulations are milder.
  • Not resistant to bland and UV.

Bulletproof Inks
Noodlers Ink makes a line of what they call “bulletproof inks”. They not only are water proof but resist other chemicals such as bleach as well as UV light.

Bulletproof Inks

  • Noodlers Ink – Black
  • Noodlers Ink – Polar Black
  • Noodlers Ink – Luxury Blue
  • Noodlers Ink – Hunter Green
  • Noodlers Ink – Fox Red
  • Noodlers Ink – Blue Ghost (invisible)
  • Noodlers Ink – Lexington Gray
Other “near-bulletproof” Noodlers Inks include:
  • Noodlers Ink – Aircorps Blue-Black
  • Noodlers Ink – Blue-Black
  • Noodlers Ink – Standard Brown
  • Noodlers Ink – Golden Brown
  • Noodlers Ink – Kiowa Pecan
  • Noodlers Ink – Marine Green
  • Noodlers Ink – Navy
  • Noodlers Ink – Red-Black
  • Noodlers Ink – Walnut
  • Noodlers Ink – Zhivago
Advantages of Noodlers Bulletproof Inks:
  • Will not damage fountain pens and can be rinsed out easily.
Disadvantages:
  • Ink may have some creeping.
  • Ink may sometimes smudge even when dry.

Water Resistant Inks

Water resistant inks are fountain pen inks that will resist moisture but are not considered waterproof.

Some water resistant fountain pen inks include:

There are a few factors to how well fountain pen inks do with water other than just the ink. The type of paper as well as the length of time will alter how the inks resist moisture.

One trick to protect your writing is to rub a plain white candle over your writing. This will coat the paper and cover your writing, protecting it from water.

Amazon.com : Noodler’s Black Waterproof Fountain Pen Ink

I bought this because I really wanted to try out using a fountain style pen but knew that many inks that are meant for such pens are not waterproof. I did a little research and came across an artist blog by the name of ‘parka blogs’ who has a youtube channel as well. Their blog post says that Noodlers is waterproof but has a long drying time and that’s why many believe it’s not waterproof.

Bought this, gave it a go and from my experience with it, I do not believe this ink is waterproof. In the video, I used an app to condense 5 minutes into 1 minute so I don’t make a long video of me just waiting. From what I see, the ink is surely not waterproof. I did the bright yellow and orange swatches in clean, then over my writing, then another swatch and the color is a little darker – because the ink lifted off.

I then waited a few hours and swatched out blue and purple over ‘waterproof; and ‘noodlers’, the bright color turned dark and a little muddy. I’m not sure what the company was thinking. I don’t mind waiting half an hour for something to dry, I use watercolors are my favorite medium so I’m used to just watching things dry but the 3-4 hours between me making the video and then me trying a light wash over the ink only to see it still muddy the color is too long.

I do not realllllly recommend this if you’re buying it because you want something that is completely waterproof or resistant. You’ll likely have to wait many, many hours and even then the ink may end up dirtying your colors either way. It’s not a complete runny mess thank goodness, but if you like soft light washes then you’re better off looking for another ink or using something like a micron wish are definitely waterproof.

13$ isn’t the worst price. There’s a lot of ink inside. When I first opened it, it spilled over the front and that’s why there’s a black line down the cover – so if you do buy this and don’t care about it not be 100% waterproof then just do it on a flat table with a tag underneath. The color is not the darkest black but if you se it for things like linework then no one will really be able to notice the slight splotchyness of color but if you do large washes then it’s a bit evident unless you layer.

The Best Black Fountain Pen Ink

Unsharpen may earn a commission when you buy through links on our site.

Black fountain pen ink tests to be the workhorse ink of many people. Blues can be for work or fun, same with reds, while the purples and oranges are more expressive and usually saved for personal activities. Black ink, despite its huge varieties, tends to be an ink for getting stuff done.

So what’s the best black fountain pen ink for day-to-day use?

A range of black fountain pen ink tested on Tomoe River paper.

Top Black Fountain Pen Inks

There are a lot of candidates when it comes to top black inks. Having done a lot of research and bought and then tested many black inks these are Unsharpen.com’s top black inks:

And then you have the day-to-day inks that people might not think of as being the best, but people use for years on end and keep buying, so they have to be at least mentioned…

  • Lamy Black
  • Montblanc Mystery Black
  • Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black
  • Pilot Black
  • Platinum Black
  • Parker Quink Black
  • Schneider Black
  • Waterman Black

Best Black Fountain Pen Ink

There are many great black fountain pen inks, but one has to be the best. Our hours of rigorous, scientific tested has yielded a (not-so-scientific) pick…

Sailor Kiwa-Guro

Sailor’s Kiwa-Guro is a black pigmented ink, that’s known for its excellent behavior, pretty easy cleaning, and slightly odd smell. It’s not the blackest black, thanks to a bit of silvery sheen, but it’s a great looking ink and if fun to use. It’s the sort of ink you can (and many of us do) use every day and still enjoy.

This is a pigmented ink so it’s water-resistant, but it won’t clog your pen and isn’t impossible to clean. It’s a nice writer and a practical everyday ink that remains fun to use.

Price: $24 for 50 ml

Best Pen Brand Black Fountain Pen Ink

If you want to stick with a major pen manufacturer’s black ink then two very good, very practical choices are those from Platinum and Lamy. There is nothing from with Sailor or Pilot (etc.) but both of these are just all-round solid choices for any pen.

Platinum Black

If you are looking for a great everyday black ink that is reliable, affordable, and well-mannered, then it’s tough to beat Platinum’s black ink. It’s relatively quick drying, it’s easy to clean, and it’s widely available.

Platinum black is sold in bottles as well as in cartridges. The cartridges are very good, as cartridges go, but they are proprietary so they will only fit in Platinum fountain pens. (We are big Platinum pen fans at Unsharpen, so this isn’t problem.)

Price: $17.50 for 60 ml

Lamy Black

Like the Platinum black, Lamy’s black is another super common ink, but its greatness can’t be denied. It’s just a good ink for every day use: it looks nice on the page, it’s easy to clean, there is a bit of shading (not not too much), it’s easy to find, it’s available in Lamy cartridges and reasonably priced bottles, and you never have to stock up because it never runs out.

Black Ink Water Resistance Test

Best Water-resistant Black Fountain Pen Inks

If you are doing art then you want a water-resistant ink that won’t wash away when it comes in contact with a brush. Or maybe you are a student that doesn’t want a drop or two of rain to ruin all your hard work. Either way, there are many excellent pigmented inks that water can’t touch.

The above three inks are all great and each have a track record that speaks for itself. The Unsharpen favorite is Kiwa-Guro, but Carbon Black is a close runner-up.

And then the Noodler’s Heart of Darkness has many, many fans online who love the inks price, durability, and “bulletproof” nature.

The Blackest Black Fountain Pen Inks

Sometimes you just want a black ink that is as black as possible and these three are the blackest of the black.

Aurora’s Black is a bit of a sleeper hit, as Aurora isn’t as popular a company as it once was and it’s generally not known for its inks any longer. This ink is also a bit expensive (about $20 for 45 ml) and less easy to find than some of the other major pen company inks. That said, if you want a true, staring-into-the-dark black, this is the best choice.

X-Feather is painfully slow to dry but it’s a top ink on cheaper paper and office printer paper, which is a very important feature to many. In addition to being strongly anti-feathering, it’s blacker-than-black coloring is a great feature. Noodler’s Heart of Darkness is quicker drying and just as black. It also offers much more value than most of the inks in this list, coming in at about $17 for 133 ml.

Testing Notes

Throughout this article you can see high-resolution samples of most of the black fountain pen inks that were tested. The same pens were used throughout the tested and the paper was always Tomoe River 68 gsm loose paper in white.

Black Ink Notes

If you really want to dive deep into each ink, you can search for the individual ink reviews or read more below.

  • Noodler’s Heart of Darkness: A true black ink. Great opacity. Some sheen when applied heavily, but a matte finish otherwise.
  • Parker Black: OK opacity and hints of blue. Writes a bit dry. Worst bleedthrough in our testing and harsh on paper. Bleedthrough came through as brown.
  • Kaweco Pearl Black: Great opacity. Pure black color. Least bleedthrough in testing. No sheen. A top pick!
  • Aurora Black: Very black with great opacity. Some hints of blue when used heavily. Nice writer. Some silvery sheen.

Fountain pen care

Why rinse fountain pens? How often should this be done? What ink can be used in fountain pens? How to store unused pens? In this article, you will find out the answers to these questions and will be able to read the detailed instructions for flushing the pen.

Why rinse fountain pens?

A fountain pen is a tool that can last for many years (a good pen can accompany you all your life). This “reusable” tool needs maintenance – then the pen will not let you down, and you will significantly extend its life.

When the pen comes in contact with the paper while writing, the smallest particles of paper fall on the pen and into the feeder channels (ink supply system).

Over time, they can accumulate there and interfere with the normal flow of ink to the nib. This is the main reason why it is worth rinsing your fountain pens.

Another reason could be a color / ink change, before which the pen needs to be flushed out of the ink that was previously used there.

How often should the fountain pens be rinsed?

The frequency of pen care depends on the type of ink you use with it, the frequency of use, and how tightly the pen is sealed.

If you regularly write and refuel the pen, then flushing is recommended no more than once every 2-4 weeks.

An exception is permanent (pigment) fountain pen ink, which contains micro-particles of insoluble pigment.

A pen filled with this ink is recommended to be washed every 3-7 days. Do not allow pigment ink to dry in the pen – it may block the ink supply system.

What ink can be used in fountain pens?

Your pens will be fine if you use fountain pen ink – it can be ink from the manufacturer of writing instruments or ink from brands that specialize in ink production.

All water based inks (water soluble inks) are good for fountain pens.

Beware of shellac ink / mascara only.

Typically special inks and ink for calligraphy and sketching. If you fill a fountain pen with such ink, it will permanently ruin your pen.

Storing fountain pens

If you are not going to use a pen for a while, or if you have several pens in your collection and use them alternately, it is recommended that you rinse the pens before taking a break.

Storing refilled pens is not a good idea: the water from the ink will gradually evaporate and the dried dye will remain inside, which is washed out of the pen longer than if it were liquid ink.

How do I clean the fountain pen?

If you want to keep the pen for storage, change ink and just do routine cleaning – use our instructions.

For pens with converter or piston filling system:

Take a glass (or two) of water.Your task is to fill the pen with water and empty it. In between, you can blot the nib with a napkin – it will absorb the excess ink. And then refill and empty the pen several times again until the water is clear.

For pens with cartridges:

1. First remove the cartridge from the pen. If it is not completely used and not dry, it can be zipped into a bag and then used again.
2. If the ink in the feeder is dry, the nib can be soaked in a glass of water for half an hour.

3. The handle can be rinsed under a stream of ordinary tap water. Some people prefer to use distilled water, but this is not necessary at all.
4. Some owners of pens use syringes for flushing.

If the handle can be used with both cartridges and a converter (eg LAMY safari pens), then it is recommended to get a converter at least for flushing purposes. When rinsing under running water, it is more difficult to achieve absolute cleanliness, as ink may still remain in the feeder.

That’s it! The pen is now ready for refilling or storage.

How to fill the Pilot Parallel Pen?

A special feature of the Pilot Parallel Pen is that no suspension materials should be used for refueling or dipping: ink, gouache, acrylic. Small particles that are part of these paints clog the capillary system and the nib. After using the suspensions, it is required to disassemble and rinse the handle.

Waterproof, permanent ink containing alcohol is absolutely contraindicated. This will not do with flushing, the ink supply mechanism will be damaged and the pen will have to be thrown away.

The Parallel Pen can be refilled with water-soluble ink . Usually they are marked “ Fountain Ink “, i.e. fountain pen ink.

Famous brands

The cheapest ink with acceptable quality is Rainbow-2 (Gamma) – blue or purple. What can I say, they write, but too liquid. Only black ink has a more or less normal density, but, in my experience, they clog the nozzles of the writing unit, and come off worse.

To make the Gamma ink thicker, it is evaporated. Place in a warm place with the lid ajar and forget for a month. I can’t say the exact date, I did it by accident. If the liquid evaporates completely, then add distilled water.

Quite expensive, but very popular refill option – liquid watercolor Ecoline , with which you can create gradients by dipping the refilled parallel in a different color or by connecting two pens for a few seconds, as shown in the instructions for the Parallel Pen.The Ecoline color range contains almost 50 colors – they mix well with each other and give new shades. The disadvantages of watercolors include translucency and poor lightfastness. If the work is supposed to be hung on the wall, then it is better to use ink.

Set of liquid watercolors “Ecoline” (primary colors), 5 colors, 30 ml

NB! Never take the white and gold Ecoline. More useless pen ink is hard to find.

Pelican and Pilot products are in the same price segment as Ecoline (300-400 ₽ 30 ml).

Pilot – The native Parallel Pen ink has good hiding power. The set of cartridges contains 12 colors, 30 ml bottles are found in blue and black. I didn’t like the smell and how they fit on the paper.

Pelican 4001, in my opinion the ink with the best value for money. They come off perfectly, quite fat, a wide range of colors, but rather transparent. If you are going to work on a charter or a fracture, the Pelican is as much a tool as a pen.Cheap ink will not work.

Ink bottle Pelikan INK 4001 78 (301051), for fountain pens, 30 ml, black

I was scared of the price for a long time, but in practice it turned out that a bottle of 30 ml lasts more than 2 months, with daily training with a green Parallel Pen.

In fact, the list of refueling materials for the Parallel Pen is exhausted by the above. From expensive (1000 ₽ 50 ml) suitable inks, you can freely buy Lamy and Pelikan Edelstein .In terms of their qualities, they are very close to the Pelican 4001, I see no reason to overpay.

Although nominally any water-soluble ink or liquid watercolor would be suitable for refilling, in fact, the choice is limited by the quality, composition and price of the paint.

Black and red Rainbow-2 can be classified as low-quality. The first pushes on cheap paper, the second is too watery. Stats-Profi and inFORMAT , judging by the reviews, are absolutely useless: liquid and pale.

Ink composition unsuitable for refilling:

  • permanent : Higgins Eternal;
  • water resistant : Kuretake ZIG;
  • contain slurry: McCaffery’s Penman’s ink, Parker, Diamine Shimmering;
  • Acrylic Base: Bombay India Ink, Vallejo, Rohrer & Klingner.

Dipping

Expand the capabilities of the Pilot Parallel Pen by dipping. Here you can use all inks and mascaras, except for permanent ones, , provided that the pen is thoroughly rinsed after work and blown out with a convector-pipette.

Here I would like to mention the stamp ink Stanger . Black is 100% opaque. For final work, Parallel Pen is better than any ink. Does not sag, bluish-black, did not push on any paper, looks great on watercolor and cardboard, inexpensive. The disadvantages include a specific smell and long drying time.

Very thick, if you fill it, you have to dilute with a blue or purple Rainbow, then the opacity will drop, but you will get the best ink that I have tried. There are five colors in the line: red, blue, green, purple, black. When mixed with Rainbow, they give very noble shades.

How and what can be used to wash a permanent marker from plastic, the choice of means

Contents of the article:

Plastic – durable quality material used for the manufacture of window frames, window sills, kitchen furniture and other household items. Its surface is smooth, it is convenient to draw on it, and children often use it. Fortunately, there are ways to get the marker off the plastic quickly and effortlessly.

How to wash a marker

Removing marker marks from plastic is not an easy task.

Permanent marker is difficult to clean. Its main purpose is to write price tags and mark goods, so it leaves bright, clear lines.

Markers are made on the basis of different substances, therefore, to remove each of them, you need to select your own tool:

  • It is easy to clean the water-based felt-tip pen .Take a damp foam sponge and wipe the dirty surface. You can prepare a soap solution by adding a tablespoon of shavings of laundry soap to a liter of water and treating the dirt with it.
  • Alcohol marker can be washed off with rubbing alcohol or vodka. Saturate the natural fabric and erase the drawn lines. To prevent streaking, change the material as it gets dirty. Rinse the surface with soapy water.
  • Oil marker can be cleaned with any oil.Soak a cotton pad with vegetable or essential oil and wipe off the lettering. Remove residues of the product with a dry cloth.

If your child has painted a plastic window sill or table, start washing it right away. Pour 2 liters of water into a bucket, dissolve 2 Fairy caps in it, lather and wash the surface with a hard sponge. Fresh traces of the water marker disappear without residue in a couple of minutes.

Try to remove stubborn inscriptions on the car body with acetone. Gently rub them with a damp cotton cloth, being careful not to damage the paintwork. At the end, treat the area with water and dry the car thoroughly.

The outlined car can be cleaned with a thinner for paints and varnishes. Buy White Spirit at the hardware store. Saturate the rag well and buff the surface. After 2-3 minutes, the lines dissolve. Wipe the body clean and wash.

Try the product of choice on an inconspicuous area before rinsing off a colored or black marker. This precaution will help prevent accidental damage to the product.

Chemicals for cleaning plastics

If dirty spots appear on the plastics, first try to remove them with gentle methods. Use toxic solvents and chlorine as a last resort if other methods have not worked.

In the utility departments of supermarkets you can buy professional tools to scrub the marker:

  • The American aerosol preparation WD-40 has a good reputation. The exact composition of the substance is classified. It is known to contain white spirit and mineral oil. It was developed to kill metal corrosion and as a water repellent. Subsequently, it was discovered that it is useful for various household needs. To clean plastic, apply the substance to the stain and scrub with a dry cloth.
  • Tablefit is required for cleaning plastic items. The concentrated liquid has a pleasant scent. Spray it onto the surface and wipe it off immediately with a cloth. The product is not suitable for products made of ABS plastic.
  • You can use the Universal Stain Pen Udalix . The Russian brand is produced in Moscow and is available in hardware stores. It removes traces of rust, oil products, ink, highlighter from clothing and can be used to clean plastic. Wet the lettering, rub with the Udalix pencil until foam forms and wait 15 minutes. Rinse off the foam with water.
  • Professional treatment is provided by the Austrian Grass Antigraffiti .It quickly removes marker marks and graffiti from plastic. The concentrated liquid is available in a spray bottle. Apply it on the stain, wait 30 seconds and wipe off the dissolved paint with a cloth.
  • Chemitec Dehydrophobinol has a powerful effect. It is intended for degreasing hard surfaces and cleans well traces of water, alcohol and oil markers. The liquid is classified as hazard class 3, so use with caution, avoiding inhalation of vapors and skin contact.Soak a napkin, wipe the labels and after 30 seconds clean them with a rag.

Melamine sponge works well for old and stubborn marker marks. It can be used dry by wiping off the drawn lines. If stains persist, dampen the sponge with water, squeeze out and re-coat the surface.

Folk remedies for removing traces of the marker

An effective folk method for cleaning plastic

You can clean the plastic painted with a permanent marker with improvised means:

  • The proven folk method is toothpaste .In a plastic container, mix equal proportions of baking soda and toothpaste. Lubricate the lettering with a thick layer. Wait 15 minutes. During this time, a chemical reaction will occur that dissolves the paint. Rub the surface with a brush and rinse off the toothpaste with water.
  • A mixture of soda and water . Make a smooth baking soda paste and apply liberally to the plastic. Rub with a sponge several times and remove the baking soda.
  • Colored pen can be removed with normal hairspray . Spray the product onto the stained area. After 5 minutes, remove with a rag and wash the plastic with soapy water.
  • Saves any sunscreen from marker marks. Spread it evenly over the dirt and wipe off with a cloth after 10 minutes.
  • If you have the school eraser for pencils handy, try using it to erase the colored and black lines on the plastic. They will brighten quickly. Remove the remaining dirt with an alcohol napkin or a swab soaked in vodka.
  • Oil-based felt-tip pen marks can be easily wiped off with tea tree oil .Saturate a piece of woolen cloth in the product and rub the stained item. When the paint has dissolved, wipe it off with a dry cloth.
  • White plastic products can be cleaned with White or with Domestos . When using the products, wear rubber gloves on your hands and try not to inhale toxic fumes. Pour liquid or gel over the stain, scrub thoroughly with a brush and rinse under running water. It is dangerous to use the method on colored plastic. It can change the shade of the surface.

Old stains are the most difficult to remove. But there are also funds from them. Use a solution of vinegar or lemon juice. Dissolve a spoonful of the product in 200 ml of warm water and process the plastic product. Lemon juice can be used neat. Pour it over the stain, rub with the hard side of the sponge and a wet rag.

Despite the fact that folk remedies are considered safe for health, it is still better to work with them with gloves.

How to process the plastic to make it less dirty

Rub the plastic surfaces with Forch P308 to prevent dirt

To prevent the plastic from darkening and getting dirty, it needs proper care.Wipe it down regularly with a baking soda solution. To prepare it, add 2 tablespoons of water to 2 liters of water. l. soda and stir.

Forch P308 has good dirt-repelling properties. It does not contain silicone and restores the smoothness and shine of the plastic. Available in liquid form. Apply the substance to the surface to be treated with a sponge. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then buff with a soft cloth.

When choosing a marker cleaner, carefully read the instructions. Some solvents will attack the plastic and cause the dirt to sink deeper into the surface.

Do not use dry powders, iron brushes or abrasive substances for cleaning. They can scratch and damage the plastic product.

How to rub a marker from plastic depending on the ink base

Removing marks from a marker often becomes a problem, especially if its ink is alcohol based. To easily and quickly cope with such contamination of the plastic surface, use special cleaners and folk remedies.

Is it possible to remove marker marks from plastic

Knowing the composition of the ink, it is easy to wipe the marks off plastic or other surface. Water, alcohol and oil based markers are available. In the first case, the drawing or inscription is erased with plain water or soapy water. The ink from the permanent marker is removed with alcohol-based products. Using essential oils, oils, or oils, you can wipe off oil-based markers.

How to erase a permanent marker from plastic

To remove drawings and inscriptions made on a plastic surface with permanent ink, use alcohol-containing agents, acetone, stain removers on different bases.

Folk remedies also help to wipe off traces of alcohol-based compositions – a stationery eraser for pencils, a mixture of soda and toothpaste, sunscreen. The effectiveness of the application depends on the composition of the cleaning agent and the quality of the plastic coating.

Alcohol

Ordinary ethyl alcohol or any alcohol with a strength of more than 40% (vodka, cognac) will help to erase the marker from the plastic. It is advisable to use a liquid containing the minimum amount of dyes.Application algorithm:

  1. Moisten a cotton pad with alcohol.
  2. Carefully work on the marker marks.
  3. Remove liquid residues from the plastic with a clean, dry paper towel.
Acetone

Acetone (or nail polish remover) will help to wipe off the inscription made with an indelible felt-tip pen from the plastic. The substance easily removes ink marks, but it should not be used when cleaning varnished or painted coatings, because in this case not only the drawing will be erased, but also the top layer of paint. How to use:

  1. Apply a few drops of acetone to a clean sponge.
  2. Treat the surface.
  3. Wait one to two minutes, wash off remaining solvent with soap and water.
Stain cleaner

Use a special stain cleaner to wipe the ink off the permanent marker. Purchase a special marker for removing stains from a hardware store, use it as follows:

  1. Carefully shade the lettering.
  2. Leave the composition to soak in the ink for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Wipe off residue with a dry sponge or tissue, then rinse with clean water.
Eraser

Before using any special tool, try removing any ink residue with a stationery eraser. How to use:

  1. Dry the surface.
  2. Erase the marker mark as you would a pencil mark on paper, applying light pressure while pressing.
  3. Remove used eraser residue with a dry sponge or tissue.
Toothpaste and soda

You can wash the marker off the plastic using a mixture of soda and toothpaste. The cleaning composition is prepared by mixing these components in a 1: 1 ratio. Application algorithm:

  1. Apply the mixture to the ink trail.
  2. Leave on for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Rub the paste onto the surface with the brush in a smooth circular motion.
  4. Remove residues of the product with soapy water, wipe the surface with a dry cloth.
Sunscreen

Use a sunscreen containing non-polar solvents to wipe away alcohol-based ink marks from the plastic. How to use:

  1. Apply a small amount of cream to the surface in a thick layer.
  2. Leave on for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Remove cream residues with a dry cloth in a circular motion using light pressure.

How to erase a marker from plastic

Nowadays, many things around us are made of plastic or have plastic parts in their composition. Tabletops are often made of plastic, walls are sheathed with plastic panels. Now imagine that you have children in your house who decided to draw with markers or felt-tip pens. Be prepared for the drawings to appear not only on paper, but also on surrounding objects. And light plastic is perfect as a canvas for young artists. After all, there are many other reasons for marker marks on plastic. Fortunately, there are also a number of tools that you can use to erase or wash your permanent marker off of plastic.

You will need:
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Nail polish remover
  • Whiteboard cleaner
  • Toothpaste
  • Hairspray
  • WD-40 universal grease (found in car stores
)

wipe the marker off the plastic:

  1. Moisten a cloth or cotton pad with a little rubbing alcohol and wipe the marker off the plastic.Even if it takes a few minutes, keep scrubbing – the rubbing alcohol will return the marker to a liquid state, so it should be easy to wipe off the surface of the plastic.
  2. If rubbing alcohol doesn’t work, try nail polish remover.
  3. Whiteboard Cleaner – Specially formulated to remove markers from plastic boards. You can find it at office supply stores.
  4. Toothpaste can also be effective in removing highlighter from plastic and other surfaces.Simply use the toothpaste to wipe the markers off and then rinse off the remaining paste.
  5. Spray hairspray on the area of the plastic with traces of marker, leave it for a minute, and then wash off the varnish with soap and water, scrubbing the marker until it is completely removed.
  6. Apply a small amount of WD-40 Multipurpose Grease to the area of the plastic with the marker marks. Using a clean rag, wipe off the WD-40 grease along with the marker.
Additional tips

How to wipe a marker off plastic, board, furniture and other surfaces

A marker is a convenient and useful thing, but often there is a need to get rid of its color mark from plastic, furniture, wallpaper and even a refrigerator. How and by what means to do it?

Universal cleaners

There are products that can wipe the marker off most surfaces. The most effective are the following cleaners:

  • Specialized industrial products for removing ink marks, felt-tip pens and markers from all surfaces, for example: Profoam 2000, Dr. Schnell Novo Pen-off, Prosept “Duty Graffiti”, Eco Mist All-Purpose. All of the above formulations have an almost instant effect, but they are not always at hand and for the most part have a high cost.
  • Microfiber cleaning cloths, eg Fröken Bock, White Cat.
  • Melamine sponge. Its principle of operation is the same as that of an ordinary school eraser. The difference is that melamine rubber should only be used when wet.
  • Medical and technical alcohol, vodka, cologne. Alcohol and liquids containing it are the most benign and should be used first. If the drawing is on a smooth surface such as glass, metal or plastic, rub it vigorously with a cotton pad soaked in the product. If a color mark is found on fabric, for example: upholstery or carpet, a disc soaked in alcohol is applied to it until the surface is clean.

Do not rub alcohol into the fabric, as this will only increase the size of the stain.

Verified by the editors: ethyl alcohol helps 100%. They also removed old paint marks along the way
  • Hairspray. When using this product, it should be remembered that it should not be allowed to dry out. Therefore, after spraying, the surface treatment should be started immediately.
  • A hard stationery eraser can, if not completely wash away the stain from a permanent marker, it will lighten and partially hide.
  • Plain white toothpaste or mixed with baking soda in a 1: 1 ratio. The composition is prepared in a small container, and then applied in a thick layer to the place of pollution. After 20-30 minutes, they begin to eliminate the problem by intensively rubbing the mixture into the surface.
  • White Spirit. The technology for cleaning an object from a marker with any of these solvents is the same as in the case of alcohol.
  • WD-40. The vehicle is suitable for removing contaminants from any objects other than those that are in direct contact with food.

It should be remembered that solvents have a strong odor and their vapors are harmful to health. Therefore, when working, it is necessary to protect hands and respiratory organs.

When using any tool, you need to remember that many materials, for example: film, enamel and some types of plastic, do not perceive the impact of aggressive substances poorly. Therefore, the cleaner is first tested on an inconspicuous area, and then, if no unwanted changes have occurred, proceed to remove stains from the marker in a visible place.

If the stain is fresh, you can try wiping it off with makeup remover wipes, micellar water or hand sanitizer.

When and how to use “heavy artillery”

If gentle means are useless, you can try to use more aggressive substances. But this can be done only if the material can withstand their impact without damage.Powerful cleaners include:

  • Universal industrial cleaning compounds, for example: “Shumanit”, “Pemolux”. Without fear of negative consequences, only the surfaces indicated in the instructions for use can be treated with such compositions. They can have a devastating effect on items that are sensitive to chemistry.
  • Hydrogen peroxide. Effective against highlighter stains left on light-colored woven surfaces. It is not recommended to use the drug on painted objects, as it can lighten them.
  • Acetone and nail polish remover. They do their job well, but they must be used with extreme caution, especially on enameled and lacquered objects. The thinner together with the marker can remove paint and enamel from the refrigerator, varnish from furniture or parquet.

Do not clean decorative foil surfaces with acetone, as well as plastic toys, TVs or telephones.

Peculiarities of cleaning various surfaces

To remove “indelible” stripes in some cases, you will need special cleaners or a complex effect on the contaminated area. For example:

  • Furniture upholstery made of light dense fabric is first treated with peroxide for a quarter of an hour. Then the pollution is exposed to alcohol for the same time.
  • Suede armchairs and sofas – with alcohol, and then with a nail file or a special brush with a combined bristle. In this case, the presence of metal is important.
  • Wash unpainted wooden surfaces with alcohol. After that, they require sanding with sandpaper. From treated or painted wood, traces of permanent marker are removed with toothpaste.
  • For leather goods, use rubbing alcohol or hairspray, which should be wiped off immediately after spraying.
  • Linoleum, laminate and glass are rubbed with a sponge dipped in soap suds and then with a school eraser.
  • Wipe the permanent marker off the whiteboards with a soft cloth or sponge. The light traces remaining after their application are removed with a special marker from stains.
  • To wash off the skin of hands, feet and other parts of the body, use wipes moistened with micellar water or make-up remover. If that doesn’t work, ethyl alcohol.
  • Wallpaper and other paper surfaces can be wiped off with a cotton swab slightly moistened with 3% hydrogen peroxide. The trace of the marker will fade after processing, but it is unlikely to come off completely.

So, with the patience and the right choice of cleaning agent, even stubborn marks from the marker can be wiped off without a trace from any surface.

How to erase a marker or felt-tip pen from plastic and other surfaces

Permanent marker tends to be absorbed into the surface and firmly fixed. In case of contamination of hard, non-porous surfaces, it is appropriate to use alcohol, acetone, special sponges or erasers. You can use bleach, hairspray, citrus juice, or regular rubbing alcohol to clean fabrics. The main task is to carefully remove the oil or alcohol marker from the stained surface, without rubbing it with persistent circular motions.

Parents of small children especially often encounter drawings with an indelible felt-tip pen, who manage to draw everything to them, except for the paper and cardboard intended for this. The indelible marker fully justifies its name – it can be very difficult to wipe it off even from the smoothest surfaces, not to mention fabrics, chipboard and MDF, which simultaneously absorb the drawn trace. The main task is to decide how to erase the marker, and at the same time not damage the surface and completely remove this trace.

It should be noted that it is very difficult to clean a marker or indelible felt-tip pen from the outlined wallpaper, documents, books. The paper is soaked through and through with paint, and instantly deteriorates after using any of the products described below. You can try a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution by gently blotting the paper from edge to center.

Removing the marker from hard, dense surfaces

The peculiarity of such a surface is that the marker does not have time to soak deeply before it dries, so it can be removed quite easily using one of the following methods.

Checklist

How to wipe off the marker with ethyl alcohol

Alcohol is the first and most recommended home remedy to be applied against permanent marker stains. A piece of rag, towel or gauze must be abundantly moistened with ordinary rubbing alcohol (but so that it does not drip) and thoroughly wipe the damaged surface. Marker marks will gradually begin to dissolve and remain on the fleece. It is especially effective against alcohol-based markers.

Pay attention! Be careful not to smudge the resulting stain, so as not to worsen the situation. Use a cotton swab to wipe only the area where the pattern is.

It may take several approaches with new fleeces until the color is completely dissolved.

Concentrated Ethyl Alcohol

An alcoholic beverage such as bourbon, rum, vodka, or moonshine is a good source of alcohol. The higher the alcohol content, the more likely it is to wipe off the marker. For example, low alcohol drinks like beer are useless.

Using a mixture of toothpaste and regular baking soda

A mixture of toothpaste and baking soda in a 1: 1 ratio is a rather aggressive medium that will be able to break down even heavily absorbed residue. Likewise with alcohol, several approaches may be required. The mixture is prepared in a clean glass or plastic container, after which it is liberally applied to the painted spot.

To split the trace, wait a few minutes and then remove the mixture with a clean damp cloth or cotton swab.If the felt tip won’t work, try rubbing it gently into the drawing with circular motions of your finger. In this way, you can wipe off the marker from any plastic.

Using toothpaste

Using a melamine sponge or magic eraser

In some hardware stores you can find a magic eraser. It is a melamine sponge that is designed to remove a variety of stains from all kinds of surfaces. For the sponge to interact with the marker, the drawing must be moistened with plain water, and then erase it with persistent but neat circular motions.

At first it may seem that the sponge does not work, but after 20–40 seconds the pattern will “float” and begin to be absorbed into the sponge. Continuously dampen the pattern to be erased with water to keep it from drying out.

Appearance of melamine sponge

Application of WD-40 agent

WD-40 liquid is a lubricant for a wide range of applications. A distinctive feature of the liquid is its wide penetration – it seeps through incredibly thin cracks through which even water does not pass. This makes the WD-40 very active in splitting the mark from the permanent marker.

In stores, the product is usually sold in an aerosol can with a thin tube. Gently apply a small amount of grease to the drawing, after a few minutes, wipe off what remains of the drawing with a cotton swab.

Variety of trade forms WD-40

Anti-stain marker

A more narrowly targeted agent can be called an anti-stain marker. It looks exactly the same as permanent and can be painted on any surface. The difference is that the felt-tip pen is impregnated with a non-polar solvent, which, when applied to a permanent trace, instantly reacts with it. It is enough to carefully sketch the damaged part of the surface with a stain-free marker – and it can be erased with a cotton swab or cloth.

The stain marker is used for cleaning whiteboards. The permanent marker is so strongly absorbed into special surfaces that it can be difficult to wipe it off even with the tools that come with the board.Paint over all the marks with a special felt-tip pen and the board will look like new.

Marker for removing stains

Stationery eraser

How to scrub the permanent marker from very smooth surfaces like plastic, plastic foil or laminated wood? You can use a regular stationery eraser, which is sold either separately or placed on pencils. You may need to make some effort to make the trace succumb to the eraser.

Stationery eraser

Sunscreen

Some creams for this purpose contain substances that can dissolve drawings. The method is similar to one of the above options – a small amount of cream must be applied to the drawing, rub in a little, after a couple of minutes remove the cream with a damp cotton swab or rag.

Sunscreen also helps remove highlighter

Acetone Applications

Acetone is a highly active solvent that works well with even the most stubborn stains. Similarly to alcohol, moisten a cotton swab or clean soft cloth with a little acetone and wipe the surface. The result is not long in coming. You can erase a permanent marker from plastic with either acetone or alcohol.

Attention! Acetone is a rather dangerous substance. Avoid contact with exposed skin, eyes, and the inside of the body. Wear rubber gloves. Do not inhale, observe safety precautions!

Acetone – perfectly removes traces of markers

Acetone is the most versatile tool that allows you to remove a black marker from varnished and wooden doors, tables and countertops, furniture, refrigerators, mirrors, in the elevator and staircase.Acetone can wash the marker off brick, walls, glass, metal and other resistant materials. It should not be used when cleaning the tinting of cars, TVs, telephones, Barbie dolls, plastic bags, PVC, vinyl – the plastic used in the production is likely to dissolve along with the drawing. In this case, use alcohol.

Cleaning the fabric from the marker

The problem with this cleaning is that the paint is absorbed very quickly. Removing the stain is more difficult from velor, jackets and jeans than from a smooth surface, however, there are ways.

White fabric

Bleach is ideal for white fabrics. The soiled clothing or pillow is soaked in bleach. The reaction can happen instantly, there and after a few minutes. In any case, you need to carefully monitor the condition of the fabric, and as soon as the marker dissolves, the clothes are immediately rinsed with plenty of plain water.

If clothing is heavily soiled, soak it in bleach. Make sure that it does not begin to corrode the fabric. As soon as the marker disappears, the fabric should be rinsed very well with plain water and dried. You can try to wash off particularly stubborn residues.

White fabric, damaged by a marker

Satin fabric

For satin fabric, use a specially prepared mixture. In a separate clean bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of milk and vinegar, 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and borax. The ingredients are thoroughly mixed and applied directly to the drawing. It may take 10–20 minutes to react with the pattern (do not worry, the prepared mixture will not affect either the structure of the fabric or its color).

Handy tools for preparing the mixture

After the time has elapsed, the damaged area should be blotted with a clean, damp sponge. You may need to wipe it off a little, but don’t be zealous. You need to blot and rub gently until the stain disappears. If it does not disappear in one go, repeat the procedure.

Strong fabrics

On fabrics that are indifferent to the properties of alcohol and acetone (for example, dermantin), it is much easier to wash the marker. Use a dampened cotton swab to wipe the mark from the marker. You will most likely need to change several fleeces before the stain can be removed. After that, the cleaned area must be thoroughly wiped with a clean, damp cloth.

Conventional fabrics

Citrus juice (such as lemon or lime) can be used to remove felt-tip marks from most common fabrics. The juice is absolutely harmless to any fabric, but at the same time it allows you to wash the permanent marker very effectively. The juice can be squeezed directly from the fruit onto the stain, and then blotted with a cotton swab.If in doubt about the aggressiveness of the citrus, dilute the juice with water. Rinse the cleaned cloth with water.

Removing the marker from carpets

Alcohol is most commonly used in cleaning carpets. It is the stain removal technique that is important here. Observing the recommendations, you will not spoil the product – alcohol will not affect the carpet fabric and its color in any way, but will only affect the pattern. Spread the rug on the table or floor with the spoiled part facing up. Pour some rubbing alcohol over the marker stain.Remove the stain with a clean cloth or cotton wool, applying it to the surface moistened with alcohol.

Pay attention! Never rub, just apply! So alcohol is guaranteed not to affect the carpet itself.

The dissolved marker will begin to gradually blend into the tissue. After a few changes of the impregnated fleece or cloth to a clean one, the trace will completely pass from the carpet.

You can also use hairspray by applying a small amount to the stain and wiping immediately with a clean towel.

After all manipulations, wipe the cleaned surface with plain water.

Removing marker from furniture

Hairspray perfectly removes traces of marker from leatherette, eco-leather and leather upholstery.

Hairspray is an excellent product for cleaning the skin

In order to wipe the painted spot, the varnish is rubbed into the surface with a rag. The marker will start to saturate the rag, so occasionally you need to apply a new dose of varnish and change the dirty rag to a clean one. After the trail has completely disappeared from the leather surface, the remains of the varnish are removed with a clean cloth, and the furniture is treated with a special conditioner. This method works on all leather surfaces including clothing, shoes and soles.

A combination of hydrogen peroxide and ethyl alcohol is used for the fabric surface. The stained surface is wiped with a cotton swab moistened with peroxide for 10-15 minutes, after which it is replaced with a cotton swab with alcohol, with which the stain is also rubbed for 10-15 minutes. As a result, the marker should completely go into the last fleece. The cleaned area is gently wiped with a damp cloth, after which excess moisture is removed dry.

For the rest of the furniture you can use acetone, alcohol or hairspray. The substance is applied to a cotton wool or cloth, the outlined surface is gently wiped. Remains of aggressive solvent must be removed with a slightly dampened cloth.

Removing the marker from the skin

Hands, face and nails outlined with a marker or felt-tip pen can be easily cleaned with regular ethyl alcohol.

Removing the marker from the skin

Use a moistened cotton swab to clean the stained area of the skin (observe safety precautions), you may have to make some effort. In the worst case, there will be a barely noticeable spot from the marker, which will completely disappear after a few days.

Fountain Pen Nib Guide: Troubleshooting Tips and Tricks

Scratches can also occur if the nibs are too rough or if the inner edges of the nibs are too sharp. In this case, you can try to make the nib smoother by polishing it slightly. Do not attempt to polish the tip until you are sure the teeth are properly aligned. Attempting to polish a tip with misaligned teeth will only worsen the problem.

One polishing method that is relatively safe and does not require special equipment is known as the “paper bag method.”

Find a paper bag or other rough paper surface. It should have a rougher surface than regular paper, but it shouldn’t have any exposed fibers that the nib could catch. With ink in the pen, draw eights on the paper using your normal writing angle and pressure. Check your plain paper pen every 30 seconds or so. Stop if you notice that the nib is pulling the paper fibers out of the bag, or if the nib does not get smoother after doing this for a few minutes.

The paper bag method is an extremely gentle form of feather polishing. It will not damage a properly made tip, but is only effective for removing microscopic burrs that may have remained on the tip during manufacturing. Larger flaws will not be remedied by this method, no matter how long you try it.

More aggressive polishing can be done with very fine grit polishing sticks, mylar or microparticles, but this is an advanced technique that can ruin the nib quickly and easily. Inexperienced users should not attempt this unless they have exhausted all other options and willing to risk permanently damaging the pen.

Fountain Pen Nib Guide: Choosing Nibs for a Fountain Pen

After the nib is shaped, nib size will have the greatest impact on how the fountain pen writes.Larger nibs create wide lines suitable for bold writing and used ink display, but many people prefer smaller nibs for everyday writing because they create line widths close to those of a typical ballpoint or gel pen.

Circular nibs generally come in one of four sizes: very thin (EF), thin (F), medium (M), and wide (B) Cursive nibs can be resized using the same legend or in terms of actual width their tips. The most common cursive pen sizes are medium italic and 1.1 mm italic, which are generally equivalent.

However, just knowing the pen size is not enough. Japanese fountain pens usually have much smaller nibs than non-Japanese or “Western” brands. This is because Japanese writing is much denser and more complex than Western writing and requires a finer, more precise tip.

The actual line width produced by a particular fountain pen may vary depending on a number of factors such as the ink and paper used, but the following table shows the typical line widths you would expect from most Japanese and Western pens under normal conditions.

Typical line width for Western and Japanese fountain pens

* Because Japanese writing requires thinner nibs, wide nibs are not common with Japanese fountain pens.

Listed below are some of the major Western and Japanese fountain pen manufacturers. Please note that some brands such as Ohto and TWSBI are considered Western despite being located in Asia because they obtain nibs from European manufacturers who use Western sizes.

* Platinum Preppy and Plaisir are exceptions. The Preppy Extra Fine fountain pen is a Japanese EF, while the Preppy and Plaisir fine to medium nibs use Western-sized nibs.

Other effects of tip size

In addition to the obvious difference in line width, there are other factors to consider when choosing tip size.

Wider nibs often have higher ink flow than thinner nibs, creating both wider and thicker ink lines.Faster ink flow lubricates the nib for smoother, lighter writing. However, this can also increase the likelihood of ink bleeding or bleeding through lower quality paper. More information on choosing fountain pen paper can be found in our article here.

On the other hand, thinner nibs tend to have a more controlled flow, making them more resistant to varying paper qualities. However, thinner nibs are generally not as smooth as wider nibs and very thin nibs such as like Japanese EFs, can actually sink into paper if too much pressure is used.

Pros and cons of thinner and wider nibs

Thin nibs Wide nibs
Pluses
  • More suitable for people with compact writing style
  • Less likely to be needed high quality fountain pen paper
  • Better ink display case
  • Smoother writing
Cons
  • May be too wet to use on paper not suitable for fountain pens
.

How to write with a fountain pen

Because they contain a lot of detail, Asian fonts such as Chinese and Japanese should be written in thin lines for legibility. In addition, traditional writing and calligraphy often require writers to take their nibs off the paper and change the strength of their strokes. For example, you can start with more pressure on the paper and finish with a lighter stroke. A great fountain pen for writing Asian characters is the Pilot Elabo, which has a soft flexible nib that creates lines of different widths depending on the pressure you apply.

Elabo has a fine and ultra-fine nib that is also great for writing complex characters. Be aware that thinner Japanese nibs can dig into the paper if you apply too much pressure. Try to touch them with a lighter touch.

On the other hand, the Western alphabet has relatively simple shapes. Western writers also tend to use italics, a style in which the nib does not need to be torn off the page too often. A good Western fountain pen writes fluidly, has a wider nib and does not require too much pressure to use.In this tutorial, we’ll use the lightweight and easy-to-use Lamy Safari as an example for English writers. Remember that if you apply too much force, wider nibs can set off puddles of ink and cause oozing.

Corporate responsibility is what I pay attention to in a manufacturing company, and all purchasing decisions are heavily influenced by the actions of the manufacturer. So preparatory to the clause ordered I took the liberty of looking at the manufacturer and the company’s code of ethics. In fact, I was relieved to read that employees perform in a safe work environment and that human rights are not violated during the manufacturing process. Unfortunately, quite often this is not accepted at all, and I personally cannot support the idea of promoting the manufacturer, which is beneficial to personnel in an immoral and illegal way.

I believe you will also find it helpful to know that a product has been made from ethically sourced raw materials as well as using environmentally friendly methods. As far as I can tell, this is a fair reason to make a purchase, especially considering that the product does not cause allergies or any of the typical problems with
