I know that your group includes a fairly large number of brands.Which ones?

Roamer, Swiss Military Hanowa, Hanowa, Police, Escada … Now I remember … (laughs).

Okay, how many do you have?

In total – 18 brands. Some of them are international, represented almost all over the world, but there are also regional ones that hold strong positions in several countries. For example Aigner, which is strong in the Middle East, and now we have started promoting it in the Far East.

We consider Police as regional, well represented in all major markets in Europe, the Middle East and Japan.International brands are Roamer, Swiss Military, Escada. That is, in addition to traditional Swiss brands, we produce watches under several fashion and lifestyle brands.

By the number of brands you are comparable to the Swatch Group . ..

We cannot be compared to them. Our group’s turnover is only around 300 million euros. This is very little against the Swatch Group. But we do not have a goal of becoming a super concern – we are quite satisfied with our business and the pace of its development.

How did your group start?

Our first brand was Police, then Aigner.After that, we began to develop regional brands, and today we rely on world famous brands.

This is a bit strange. As a rule, people start working with traditional Swiss brands and then expand their range with fashion watches. Everything happened the other way around for you.
You are right if we are talking about Russia. But the rest of the world is not like Russia. In many countries – in Europe, the Middle East, Asia – the market for classic watches is densely occupied, and in order to break into it, it is necessary to offer the buyer something special, unusual – both in terms of price and other criteria. In addition, there is a king in the segment of traditional watches – this is the Swatch Group. As a result, it is much easier to find both points of sale and good buyers for a fashion brand than for traditional watches. In addition, at the time of the start of our company, the fashion market was still empty, and we were betting that due to the fact that we were one of the first to start, we could take a worthy place on it. In any case, the bet on the fashionable brand paid off – Police proved to be very successful, and other brands followed it.
In fact, if you dig deeper, we also started with the classic: before the Police, I worked in the watch business for 20 years. I made watches for Roamer, Swiss Military Hanowa. After the owner retired, I took over the company. So by the time Police started, I had a very rich experience of working with classic brands.

Why are there no luxury brands in your portfolio except Aigner?
I don’t think Aigner qualifies as a luxury brand. Rather, it is a watch from the “affordable luxury” category, such as the Escada. We do not want to go higher. This is a different business that requires a different psychology, people, different distribution, etc. There are many companies in this segment, but after the first presentation in Basel, they all face the problem of places of sale. There are few good watch shops, and it is extremely difficult to persuade retailers to move some old brands for new ones. Our niche is a range from 200 to 500 francs. We prefer to work in areas where we are strong, where we feel comfortable, have experience and a good base.The stable dynamics of the group over the past 5 years shows that our strategy is correct.

How did your group cope with the crisis?
If I say that the crisis has become a gift of fate for us, it will not be true. On the other hand, I cannot say that the crisis had any catastrophic impact on us. Our turnover and profit slightly decreased. Nevertheless, we remained profitable, we did not have a global reduction in staff or salaries. We even paid bonuses and bonuses like in regular years.In many ways, the crisis turned out to be useful for us, because it made us look at the situation a little differently, at what we are doing, to reorganize the business. In other words, to be cleansed.

Maybe I’m not quite Swiss in mentality, but I like to do something, I like stability and I want to be confident in the future. Our key
motive is responsibility and stability. Responsibility for the company, for the brands that you lead, for the people with whom you go through life. Now the group employs about 2,100 people, if you collect enterprises and divisions in Switzerland, China, Hong Kong, Japan, European and Asian countries.Words about the luxury market are very good, they attract people, but among those talking about luxury, there are no more than 2% of real buyers. Everyone wants to live beautifully. But in reality, there is little behind these words. The crisis of 2008 very clearly showed who is worth what: the vast majority of companies, both manufacturers and trade, faced huge problems. I slept peacefully in 2008-2009. I did not expect that in the middle of the night a banker would ring on my mobile and demand that the loan be repaid. For those who worked for loans, the situation was sad.They paid dearly for their beautiful business. The crisis did not create large-scale problems for us. Because the range in which we are working turned out to be in demand even during the difficult months. On the contrary: we got a lot of new points of sale, because the interest of retailers in inexpensive but high-quality watches has grown. The second reason that helped us was that we practically did not use bank loans. We even have a new brand – Hanowa. That is, our dealer network and the range of brands have only expanded.

I just wanted to ask about this brand: why do you need it if you already had Swiss Military Hanowa? What’s the difference between them?
Swiss Military Hanowa is a brand focused on youth, sporty style. And the Hanowa collection is dominated by a very simple design, closer to the classic. This brand is also aimed at young people, but primarily girls, and not men, like Swiss Military. So the two brands do not interfere with each other at all. In most markets, they get along well with each other on the shelves of the same stores.

Are both brands produced in the same factory?
Yes.

Are you the owner of this factory?
This particular factory is partly. My partner and I own it 50/50. In addition to Hanowa, we have an assembly plant in Switzerland, in the Italian speaking part, there is an assembly plant in China, there are also factories for the production of cases. And one dial factory in Switzerland.


If I’m not mistaken, are you the owner of the ISA factory?

No, this company is owned by one of my partners in another business.She is not connected with me or with our group. We consider this factory as one of the suppliers along with others. We discussed merging a few years ago, but at the moment ISA is independent from us.

Are you going to start your own production of calibers?
At least not today. It is very expensive. There is one question I ask all Swiss people. Why can’t you unite and create your own factory: not ISA, Sellita, but your own independent supplier of mechanisms for 3-5 brands? At first glance, this idea looks logical and feasible.But three factors work against it. The first is money. To set up a factory requires rather large funds, about one hundred million francs. You can find money. The difficulty is that this is a very long-term investment.

The second problem is technology debugging. Despite the seeming simplicity of the watch mechanism and the fact that the prices for them start from just a few francs, in fact it is a very high-tech product. It is not easy to release it at an affordable price. Deployment and normal debugging of the production process takes a long time – from five years.Your money will lie for five years before you can offer the market anything and start generating any income. But five years is not all. To fine-tune the movement, you need a lot of statistics – a large number of sold watches based on it. And this is another three years. No laboratory tests can reveal 100% of mechanical caliber sores. You have to sell an essentially crude mechanism in the amount of hundreds of thousands of pieces, and nothing else. Where can you find these buyers? And only after that you will be able to bring the mechanism to an acceptable level of quality.Therefore, the minimum period after which your investments will bring in something is 6–8 years. Few people want to take risks and go for such a long investment.

The third reason is people. The best machines don’t work on their own. Finding people and staffing the factory is the biggest challenge. Even in Switzerland, finding employees with the right qualifications is not easy. There are very few specialists capable of mastering the production of a new caliber.

But the issue of human resources is essentially a matter of money.If you have money, you hire people in Switzerland or from France, for example …

Formally, yes. In practice, things are getting worse. Most watchmakers are very dedicated to their company and their employer. Even if you offer them 20-30-50% more than they get now at ETA, it is not a fact that you will be able to attract the necessary personnel – 90% will not budge.

Why?

Probably, the point is in the product, in the watches and traditions of this market. Unlike the automotive and many other industries, watches are a very traditional profession.People consider the caliber they make and the factory they work as part of themselves. And for them, the question is not just about moving to work in another company, another building, but about the fact that they must give up part of themselves. Not everything can be bought for money.

If people create new car factories in different countries, I think it is possible to create mechanisms.

Yes, today more and more companies appear in Switzerland that produce their own movements, but the price for them is too high.We have a specific price range based on inexpensive movement parts. If we sell mechanical Swiss watches for the price of 300-500 francs, for example, we cannot buy a movement that costs 200 francs.

Does this mean that you will continue to depend on ETA, on the Swatch Group?

Yes, but we have a very good relationship with the Swatch Group. And as long as we don’t have any problems, we get all the necessary mechanisms. In addition, 90% of our production comes from quartz models and only 10% from mechanics.It is not so important for us, it is a nice addition, nothing more.

ETA is the core of the Swatch Group, without which the group cannot exist. What is the core of your group?
Difficult question. We have a different structure, a different approach to business. Therefore, we do not have such a core, any part, the removal of which would lead to serious problems for the group as a whole. None of our brands provide more than 15% of the group’s turnover. If we lose any brand tomorrow, it will damage us, but not kill the company.I would say that our group does not have a vertical, but a horizontal structure. This approach gives less leverage, but more stability. And the 2008 crisis proved it correct. It is important for us to ensure the greatest security in the future for our partners, our consumers. They won’t lose all of their investment because we are having problems with one brand. We take security measures not only for ourselves, but for everyone. Because we know that we are not the only ones involved in this business, we are only
strong thanks to the trust of our partners and consumers.

Two years ago, many retailers complained that they were not satisfied with the quality of Swiss Military.
Yes, we had problems with some models. The reason for them lay in the suppliers: we were unable to ensure the required quality of components and adherence to delivery times. To solve the problem, we invested in the development of our own capacities: the purchase of equipment and entire companies.
Those problems have now been successfully resolved. We have changed the assembly technology, quality system, supply chain.From understandable examples – if earlier we carried out only a “dry” test for water resistance, like 99% of Swiss companies, today we test all 100% of manufactured watches with a “wet” method. The dry test reveals about 70% of defects, but the remaining 30% cause a lot of problems.
Quality is the most important thing for us, we invest a lot of money in it. We have recently moved to a new production building with an area of ​​10,000 sq. meters. This plant is equipped with the most sophisticated modern equipment to ensure the highest quality.

Which of your brands is most important to you now?

In terms of turnover, these are Aigner, Police, Swiss Military and Roamer.

Which brand will be the strongest in 3-5 years?
Good question! It is not easy to answer it … We stand on two pillars.
The first is the original Swiss made watches: Roamer, Swiss Military and Hanowa, sales of which are growing rapidly in many countries.Classic Swiss brands have been and will remain in demand, this market is quite stable. It’s another matter that the competition is very high on it, and the possibilities for expansion have long been exhausted. We pay a lot of attention to this direction, since we fully own these brands –
and can fully manage them. The second column is the fashion and lifestyle brands that we manufacture under license. This is a very interesting and dynamic market that is developing rapidly.
