The Best Monogrammed Stuff | Into The Gloss

When I was a little kid, I wanted nothing more than to wear pastel hair barrettes that had my name written across their small surfaces. My mom did not approve for reasons that, to my four-year-old self, seemed totally absurd (she was concerned about me naïvely trusting would-be kidnappers—point, Mom). And growing up in a prepster’s paradise (Washington, DC), having your monogram, initials, or name scrawled across anything and everything—bags, wallets, notebooks, jewelry, clothing, stationary, barrettes—was everything. So I admit that I may have a natural predilection for personalization. There is something so luxurious about objects that are exclusively your own, and labeled as such, whether or not said objects are actually that fancy. Whether embroidered onto throwback classic totes or stamped on bespoke stationary, monograms and initials are never a bad idea (writing your name in your camp clothing: no longer necessary). Here’s my beginner’s guide:

  1. Bianca Pratt Gold Initial Necklace : Pratt’s delicate single letter on a gold chain is the sophisticate’s Carrie Bradshaw nameplate necklace [3]. Whether you go with one letter, or full force with a three-necklace-stacked monogram, these subtle chains are a modest way to wear your name (or that of a child, pal, more-than-a-pal, etc) quiet and proud.

  2. Sarah Chloe Petite Signet Ring : The signet ring comes from the pre-Internet days of letter-writing (senders would press the round, engraved surface into soft wax to notify the recipient of the sender’s identity), but today it serves as the perfect addition to my ring-covered fingers. Available in five styles (four variations of a single initial or the standard monogram script), I find this petite ring fits best on your pinky.

  3. Terrapin Engraved A6 Correspondence Card : Speaking of mail, is there anything better than opening your mailbox and finding something other than a bill or snail-mail spam? No, no there isn’t. Though Terrapin may have made a name with their hilariously inappropriate cards, their unstuffy stationary is the perfect way to give thanks this holiday season (and get props for stayin’ classy).

  4. L.L. Bean Boat and Tote Bag : You can’t do a story about monograms without including the classic Maine bag. The tote of mothers, celebrities, and sailors everywhere, it’s the most durable carryall out there. And if nothing else, it’s rumored that Anna Wintour herself buys them for her fam every summer. Sold.

  5. Brooks Brothers Non-Iron Pajamas: It is the mark of true adulthood when one abandons his/her oversized shirts-and-sweatpants combo, or cartoon-doodled PJs, for more streamlined and mature sleepwear: the pajama set. A great gift to yourself or the object(s) of your affection. You can even wear the top half out to get your morning coffee, for that slept-in effect.

And if none of these things strike your fancy, your initials can be emblazoned on virtually anything J.Crew.

90,000 How To Create A Monogram Online For Free | Design, logo and business

A monogram (translated as “one letter”) is a graphic sign that includes several intertwined letters. Usually two characters are used, but three can also be found. As a rule, the monogram consists of the initial letters of the name of the company or the name of its owner. It is placed mainly on the logo (such logos are also called monograms).

Create your logo online . More than 50 thousand brands around the world are already using logos from Turboly.

Create a logo online

The letters in the monogram seem to be one whole, complement each other. This is a rather unusual design solution for the inscription, which is used by many well-known companies. For example, CCN, General Motors, Paco Rabanne and others have a monogram as a brand logo.

Where is the monogram used

Monograms are used for souvenir and gift items. They are also often placed on postcards, invitation letters and official documentation (if they act as a logo).Monograms are often used in corporate symbols. In addition, they can be made directly to popularize the business. You can also find a monogram in fashion brands with a huge history.

The monogram logo will certainly attract the attention of potential customers, thereby increasing the likelihood of the company’s success. But for the effective use of this product, care must be taken to develop a unique and memorable monogram.

What should be a monogram

Before making a monogram, you need to take into account the recommendations for its production.A quality and attractive monogram should have:

  • Simple design. It is important to understand that a monogram is a small symbol. So it shouldn’t include a lot of unnecessary elements. Otherwise, the user will not understand what to look at. Also, with a significant reduction in scale, many elements can become simply illegible.
  • A small number of shades. Do not use several bright color spots at once for making a monogram. Choose 1-2 primary colors. And keep in mind that each shade has a specific meaning. In addition, when choosing colors, consider the compatibility of colors with each other.
  • Correct font. It is important to choose not only the design, but also its size. See if the font is readable if you make it smaller.

Experiment! This is the only way you can find your truly “own” design. Don’t copy the work of others. The monogram must be unique.

Monograms in fashion – what are they and how to register them

In 1896, designer Louis Vuitton’s son came up with a way to “label” his father’s nascent business, and for more than a century, the intertwined LV letters with a floral pattern around them have been one of the most recognizable symbols in the world. Fendi, Chanel, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent can also boast of their monograms – powerful brands stand behind the stylized letters of the alphabet in the fashion industry. And sometimes they even defend their monopoly right to use them in court. For example, two fashion houses – Gucci and Guess fought for nine years over the logo in the form of the letter G.

The case went to courts in five countries, but the dispute was not as straightforward as Gucci initially thought. And only years later, the parties entered into an amicable agreement, the terms of which are still kept secret.

So what exactly is a monogram? We talked about this with the patent attorney, managing partner of IPStyle Maria Ortinskaya.

A monogram is a combination of two or more letters (usually the initials of the designer) used to identify products or as a logo. And such a unique combination can be registered as a trademark. The main thing is that it must have distinctive features. That is, to make it possible to distinguish goods or services of one brand, manufacturer from others (through style, original fonts, graphic elements, etc.). A striking example of image styling is YSL.But the letters of the alphabet by themselves cannot be registered.

Both a company and an individual can register a monogram in Ukraine. Moreover, the latter does not have to be an entrepreneur. In other words, a novice designer who is just developing a concept for his brand can already apply for a trademark registration. To do this, he needs to decide for what products he will use it. For example, clothes and shoes are one class of the International Classification of Goods and Services for the Purposes of the Registration of Marks, belts, bags and umbrellas are another, jewelry is a third, notebooks and diaries are the fourth and T.d.

The next step is to check the trademark for similarity and identity. It may turn out that “your” monogram already belongs to another company and is used for the same goods, say, bags and shoes, for which you planned to use it. In this case, it is important to check not only the combination of letters, but also their graphic implementation. By adding personality and specificity to them, you can minimize the risk of being refused registration. However, as well as accusations of violation of someone’s rights. And to avoid a situation where the consumer can simply mix up brands.

By the way, not so long ago the Chanel fashion house defended its two-letter monogram, which is often called double C. The logo was created in 1925 by Coco Chanel and has since become an important part of the brand’s image. Two simple letters, fastened together like Olympic rings, do not lose their attractiveness for many, many years and “adorn” all Chanel products, be it an elegant bag, shoes, perfume or jewelry. It is not surprising that any “encroachment” on the resemblance to the two iconic letters of the French luxury brand is suppressed through the courts. So, two years ago, Chanel won a case against the jewelry company Golden Rose 999, challenging its logo in the form of two inverted letters S.

Since we are already talking about the protection of monograms, it is worth noting one more aspect. Let’s say you are a manufacturer of fashionable homewear. By your order, the designer stylized the monogram and made it a unique visualization. In this case, the first thing to do is to conclude an agreement with the designer on the transfer of property copyright to you.Since the fact that you gave the assignment, approved the style and paid for the work of the designer does not mean transferring the copyright to you. And without signing a contract, they will remain with the designer. And as you might guess, he can independently use the monogram he created or sell the copyright for it to someone else. For example, your competitor.

One last thing. A monogram can be used by a company or individual for any product or service, but it cannot be protected by law until it is registered as a trademark. And here it is important to remember: who first filed an application with the Intellectual Property Office and received the corresponding certificate, that is the one who owns the monogram.

90,000 Monogramming: Personal Sign and Contemporary Jewelery – Jewelery Articles, Cutting Methods, Jewelery World, Jewelery Fashion |

A monogram is a complex and beautiful drawing, which consists of letters intertwined in a whimsical dance. Usually, to create a monogram, the first letters of the surname and first name are used, and in Russia they often add a third initial to them – the initial letter of the patronymic.

A masterfully executed monogram is a true work of art: unique, eye-catching and unambiguously reflecting the individuality of its owner.

    Creating Monograms: Ancient Greece

The oldest monograms found by archaeologists are more than two and a half thousand years old. In ancient Greece, they were used in minting coins, decorating the surface of the metal with cunningly woven letters from the name of a city or region.

A little later, in the 1st century AD, the rulers of Rome decorated medals and standards with monograms.A few centuries later, Roman emperors began to use the monogram as their own signature and personal symbol. At that time, Rome was the cultural center of the world – it is not surprising that other European rulers soon joined this tradition.

Already in the 7th – 8th centuries the Pope, the monarchs of France and England used the monogram:
By the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the monogram culture reached its peak. They were used by royal houses and aristocrats, artists and poets, church hierarchs and famous industrialists.During this period, the monogram was finally established as a personal symbol, which testifies to the fame and high position of its owner, as well as the strength of his home and family.

The monogram was used to decorate coins and jewelry, personal belongings and clothing, it flaunted over the gates of the estates and in the stucco over the doors of the mansions. Items marked with personal symbols were inherited and quickly became heirlooms, carefully kept in the family.

This is interesting: the monogram of Christ

Despite the fact that Jesus himself did not use the monogram, he still has one. Moreover: throughout history, several versions of the “Christograms” have appeared, but the most famous version was and remains the version of Constantine the Great.

Having come to power in 306, this Roman emperor ordered to remove the legendary Roman eagle from all standards and replace it with a monogram of the first two letters of the name “Christ” in the Greek spelling.

This monogram was the most widespread symbol of Christianity until the 5th century, and only after the fall of the Roman Empire did it give way to the cross. However, up to the present moment, the Christogram remains one of the main signs in the symbolism of Christianity, along with the cross and the fish.

    Monogram and monogram

These are very close concepts that are often confused with each other. The fact is that a monogram is also a personal sign, and it is also based on intertwined initials. There is only one key difference: the monogram is a more complex symbol, which is framed and complemented by heraldic and decorative elements.

Incidentally, this is one of the most famous monograms in history: the personal sign of Catherine the Great. Her elegant “E” with two vertical lines was known all over the world: coins and medals were decorated with this symbol, diplomatic and personal mail was sealed, it is found in the interiors of the empress’s palaces and houses.

    Monograms in the modern world

Today monograms retain their popularity and significance: they are still used to emphasize the status of the owner or company. Many world famous brands use a monogram or monogram as their symbol.

Monograms are very popular in jewelry: they are used to decorate personalized jewelry and insignia, medals and orders of honor. The works of the best modern masters are in no way inferior to the works of art of the legendary jewelers of the past.

At the same time, in order to make your personal mark, it is not at all necessary to be a famous couturier or heir to a noble family, it is enough just to have a desire to consolidate your name in the impeccable beauty of precious metals.

The monogram is ideal for use as the title element of jewelry, medals and commemorative signs. It can be:

    – A beautiful piece of jewelry such as a ring, cufflinks, earrings or business card holder. Such products emphasize the status of the owner and can become a heirloom that children and grandchildren will be proud of;

    – Medal with corporate symbols, which will recognize the merits of the head or a particularly valuable employee of the company;

    – An exquisite and absolutely unique gift to a person dear to you – a thing that will remind you for decades.

Monograms and monograms on the coins of the Russian Empire

The history of letter abbreviations on coins is more than two thousand years old. The first monograms denoting the city of minting are found on the coins of Ancient Greece. They consisted of initial letters, sometimes one of them could be turned upside down, or located at an angle. In the Middle Ages in Europe, monograms appear – also monograms, but unlike them, they have a more complex structure and belong to a specific owner.

Monogram on the coin of Paul I

It is sometimes quite difficult to distinguish a monogram from a monogram, a monogram can consist of repetitions of one letter located in a circle, with another letter in the center. But if you add more artistic elements there, then it will already be a monogram.

It was very honorable to have your own monogram, especially if it was received from the monarch for special merit. The rulers themselves invented monograms for themselves according to the first letter of the name, dynasty, included titles, etc.

The fashion for monograms came to Russia along with the Peter’s transformations. At first, these were not very complex monograms, composed of four letters “P” (Peter) and the Roman numeral “I” (First).

Already at the end of the reign of Peter the Great, complex monograms appear, that is, denoting not one person, but several. They were used by the closest associate of the emperor – Prince A.D. Menshikov, carefully weaving the letter “M” into the Latin letters “P” (Peter). These can be seen in his palace in St. Petersburg. Under Catherine I, the letter “M” is so carefully disguised that it does not stand out clearly, but is only guessed at a cursory glance.

The expression “heads and tails” came from the copper dimes of the second half of the 18th century, when the coat of arms was depicted on one side – a two-headed eagle, and on the other a monogram resembling a sieve. The earlier formulation “spear al sieve” traces its history from coins of lower denominations. Most likely “tails” is an abbreviation for “sieve”.

Joint monograms of our favorite couples: ru_royalty – LiveJournal

Joint monograms are an interesting thing. For some of them, you can trace the relationship in a couple and this will fully correspond to rumors. And then we are already making “diagnoses” from the photo, why not try the monograms. Of course, these are nothing more than personal impressions, but still it is interesting. I propose to reflect and express your thoughts.

This is the monogram of Charles and Diana. IMHO, everything is clear. It looks like a predatory fish, both letters are scary and flattened – it does not smell of harmony.

    Philip and Matilda.

The letter M seems to serve as a restraining force for other letters, as if it does not allow them to disintegrate. It is fair if you consider that many believe that it was thanks to Matilda that Philip settled down, overcame his difficult character and began to resemble the crown prince.

    Felipe and Letizia.

Very harmonious monogram. The letters are similar and float like two swans. Harmony.

    William and Catherine.

Everything is complicated with this monogram, since, as you know, there were constraints in its creation. Therefore, it is difficult to express impressions. But I do not like it and does not bode well.

    Frederick and Mary.

Two impressions at once. First, the letters F from M grow like horns. Considering how many times Frederick was suspected of treason … Secondly, the letter F is twisted, it seems to resemble a person with a distorted face of pain and despair, and it is as if in a cage and wants to escape.

    Haakon and Mette-Marit.

Very nice monogram. Reminiscent of an angel with wings. The letters M behind the H are like behind a stone wall. Quite true.

    Pavlos and Marie-Chantal.

    Abracadabra. :))))

    Willem-Alexander and Maxim.

Also a very nice monogram. The letters seem to mirror each other, as if two halves of one whole. Which is also true – VA and Maxima are almost the only royalty-pair, about whom I can say – halves.

    Victoria and Daniel.

Although B is higher, D is larger in this pair. On the other hand, D serves as a support for V.

    Albert and Charlene.

Nice, but it looks like it’s heavy on S.
