Ancillary devices, often referred to as fittings, are:

  • dividers;

which are necessary for the installation of pressure gauges in order to ensure the subsequent correct measurement and control of pressure values ​​with a strictly regulated error, as well as to ensure the reliability of the operation of these devices.

5.1. Separators and Separators

Seals, often called seals, are designed to separate the measuring device, the inner cavity of its sensitive element from the measured medium and are used in the following cases / 5-1 /:

  • contamination of the measured substance or its high viscosity; crystallizability or rapid changeability of its plasticity;
  • if the measured medium causes corrosion of the sensitive element or other parts of the instrument of the internal measuring cavity;
  • high temperatures of the measured media, which do not allow the operation of standard measuring instruments;
  • increased hygiene requirements for technological processes in food, pharmaceutical, etc.industry, as well as increased requirements for the control of processes in conditions of chemical reactions;
  • Ensuring the operability of devices at low ambient temperatures, the internal cavities of which are filled with a liquid, easily frozen medium;
  • design features of the equipment that do not allow the installation of standard meters.

Indicating and electrocontact manometers and other pressure measurement and control devices can be completed with separators.

Section 2.4 describes pressure gauges in which diaphragms are both a separating element and a sensitive element. Such designs, with the advantages described above, have disadvantages in comparison with the use of a measuring device with separators: limited measurement range (up to 4 MPa).

The main requirements that must be followed when choosing a separator are as follows:

    • The material of the diaphragm and the supply lines of the separator must not interact with the measured medium;
    • the rigidity of the separating element (diaphragm, bellows) should correlate with the measured pressure and the characteristics of the SE of the device: the rigidity of the diaphragm of the separator should be much less than the stiffness of the sensitive element of the measuring device;
    • the volume of liquid displaced from the separator in a given pressure measurement range should be related to the change in the volume of the sensitive device;
    • , the conditions of installation and separator, with the exception of special designs, must exclude the presence of air or gas in the internal measuring cavity of the device and in the internal working volume of this separator.

The operating range of diaphragm and bellows seals of various models in terms of pressure is from minus 0.1 to 160 MPa, in terms of temperature – from minus 90 to + 400 ° C.

In terms of functionality, the separators are designed to work with all aggressive media found in modern technological processes.

a) Constructions

Diaphragms or bellows are used as working elements of the seals, which can be removable or mounted on device bodies by welding or soldering.

Bellows are more elastic, with the possibility of displacing a larger volume of the separating liquid (relevant for significant changes in the internal volume of the SE measuring device). However, the shape of their surface, the specificity of the designs of separators with bellows (the presence of various shapes of sinuses) limit their use for viscous media that change the phase state.

Diaphragms are very sensitive to overloads and, accordingly, exceeding the maximum permissible loads, which can be observed if the connection between the separator and the measuring device is not tight, the device is not well filled (air residues), exceeding the calculated impact values ​​can lead to irreversible deformations and the device leaving building.

All separators designed to separate the internal cavities of the sensitive elements of the devices from the measured medium can be divided into open and closed, the main distinguishing feature of which is the accessibility of supplying the measured medium to the separating element. With open separators, the separating element is in direct contact with the volume of the measured medium or the cross-section of the supply lines is not less than the area of ​​this element. In closed dividers, the supply of the measured medium, as a rule, is carried out through supply lines with a cross-section significantly smaller than the area of ​​the separating element.

Closed separators are fundamentally different from open ones in the presence of a medium supply chamber with a connecting nipple. In most designs, open dividers equipped with a media supply system are converted into closed ones. Also closed, in which the medium supply is replaced by a connection device directly to the tank or pipeline flange, are converted into open ones.

A number of seals, such as small diaphragm seals (PMM), are classified as open or closed, depending on the place of installation: installation in the manometer connecting nipple acquires signs of closed; screwing the PMM directly into the tank, flush with its inner wall, characterizes it as open with a suitable range of applications. Open dividers are divided into technical and hygienic. Technical seals are usually flanged. Hygienic dividers are connected to technological lines using special designs. Open seals are most widely used in pressure measuring systems for viscous, solidifying, interspersed, contaminated media.

Diaphragm seal flanged open ( RMFO ) (Fig.5.1), one of the most famous, has several modifications: all-flange (Figure 5.1a) and with a pressure flange (Figure 5.1b).

In the RMFO seals shown in Fig. 5.1, the diaphragm 1 is connected to the one-piece flange of the separator 2 or the body of the diaphragm block 3 by welding, soldering or special glue, which is determined by the properties of the measured medium. In the presented designs, the one-piece flange of the separator 1 and the body of the diaphragm block 3 are manufactured in one piece with the outlet connection of the device.

In the all-flange design (Figure 5.1a), the separator is installed on a standard pipe outlet flange.

For the installation of an RMFO with a clamping flange, Fig. 5.1b), a special seat is required for installing a membrane unit 1, the tightness of the installation of which is ensured by a clamping flange 5 with a sealing gasket 4 and fastening bolts 6.

The filling unit 7 takes place in all structures where the separating element is made of metal and its movement is limited by the design geometry. Differences in the mounting designs of all-flange and pressure-flange dividers are not significant during a new installation, because such dividers can be supplied with mating, both serial and individual flanges. Pay attention to the design when installing into an existing spacer slot.

RMFO (Fig.5.1) allow to measure the pressure of crystallizing and changing their phase state of media, liquids, gases and gas-liquid mixtures with solid impregnations, high-viscosity substances. The measured pressure, as can be seen from the figure, acts on and bends the seal diaphragm. By means of the working fluid, the pressure is thus transferred to the sensitive element of the device. The change (displacement) of the volume of the separating liquid when the working pressure is applied to the membrane or bellows is determined by the dimensions and properties of the membrane, the design of the device.

By design, open bellows flange separators (RSFO) are close to the RMFO, a diagram of one of which is shown in Fig. 5.2.

Bellows 1, made of fluoroplastic in this design, is fastened with a clamp between flange 2 and connecting nipple 3. Siphon 1 is mounted flush with the connecting plane of flange 2 or, if additional protection is required, it is recessed inside this flange.

Usually, seals with an open diaphragm or bellows are installed on large-diameter pipelines, various kinds of vessels, reservoirs, when organizing various technologies when the presence of stagnant zones is not allowed, etc.

Separators RMFO and RFFO with an all-flange design or with a clamping flange can be mounted on large-diameter pipelines. As an example, Figure 5.3 shows a diagram of a workplace for mounting such a separator on a large-diameter pipeline.

On a large-diameter pipeline 1, a branch pipe 2 is mounted by welding, at the end of which a flange 3 is installed, which has a standard or individual configuration. The length of the branch pipe 2 is determined by the physical properties of the working medium: the higher its viscosity, the tendency to solidification, the shorter the length of the branch pipe.This is the dependence on the requirements of hygiene: the washability of stagnant zones is higher with a shorter length of the diverting elements. In such structures, the membrane is located practically in the zone of the moving stream.

In some technologies, a stagnant zone may occur in front of the flange separator, where the measured medium accumulates and forms a stagnant zone. For periodic maintenance in situations where an additional check of the working surface of open separators is required (possible adhesion of the working medium to the diaphragm, filling and solidification of the medium in the supply channel, etc.)), service insert 1 (Fig.5.4) is used, mounted between the supply line with flange 2 and separator 3.

The service insert is installed in the corresponding seats of the flanges and is fixed by tightening the tensioning bolts 4. The presence of working holes (usually two holes) with plugs in the service insert allows maintenance of the separator.

When positioning the seal diaphragm in the measured flow, the physical properties of the flow must be taken into account. So, in the presence of solid inclusions, the membrane can undergo increased erosive wear with a corresponding reduction in its service life.

To increase the service life of membranes in conditions of increased erosive wear, as a rule, one of the solutions is used: a membrane is made of a special material that is resistant to work under these conditions (see.below about materials for membranes), or seek design solutions.

So, protective sides can serve as constructive additional protection of the membrane from direct mechanical influences in open dividers. As an example in fig. 5.5 shows a diagram of a collapsible flange separator with a pressure flange. In this design, the diaphragm 1 is mounted on the connecting nipple 2 by means of a ring with a protective flange 3 and sealed with a gasket 4. The clamping flange 5 allows the structure to be sealed at the installation site.In this design, a ring with a protective flange 3 provides a certain protection of the membrane 1 from lateral mechanical influences.

For operation in conditions of increased erosive wear, diaphragm seals with a deep-seated diaphragm have been developed (Fig.5.6) – RMFU.

In the non-separable separator shown in Fig. 5.6, a flow stabilization chamber is provided in front of the diaphragm, formed by the narrowed medium inlet opening, the diaphragm and the distance between them. Such a chamber significantly reduces the dynamic effect of the measured medium directly on this membrane and makes it possible to increase its service life.

In Figure 5.7. shows the diagrams of separators for flanged collapsible open diaphragms (a) and bellows (b), in which the branch pipe of the supply channel serves as a stabilization chamber for the measured medium and significantly reduces the side mechanical effect on the diaphragm or bellows.

In the collapsible structures shown in Figure 5.7, the membrane 1 or bellows 4 is fixed between the connecting flange 2 and the outlet fitting 3. The membrane 1 and bellows 4 can be either metal or made of elastic materials: fluoroplastic, rubber of various brands. When using separating elements made of elastic materials, vacuuming to fill the separator-internal cavity of the SE of the measuring device is not necessary.

A slightly different situation may occur when using separators in the system for measuring the level of various substances in vessels-tanks using the hydrostatic method.As an example, Figure 5.8a shows a schematic diagram of the installation site for a differential pressure gauge. In many cases, various kinds of sediments are concentrated at the bottom of the tank, which leads to clogging of the measuring path of the device.

With the installation of a separator, the influence of clogging on the measurement result is reduced.However, if there is significant bottom sediment, the branch pipe 2 can also become clogged, which prevents a representative signal from being obtained by the pressure value. In order to reduce this effect, separators have been developed, which are a type of open diaphragm devices, with a tube

(Figure 5.8b, c) – RMFT. In such devices, the tube is mounted in the branch pipe so that the membrane is flush with the inner wall of the tank. This greatly reduces the likelihood of the influence of bottom sediments on the measurement result and ensures the reliability of the readout.

Hygienic (food) separators are designed to measure and control pressure complete with pressure gauges in technological lines, where there are increased requirements for their cleanliness, the possibility of periodic flushing, preventing the formation of stagnant zones. The most widely used hygienic separators are in the food industry, pharmaceuticals, chemical technologies, biotechnology.

Hygienic separators can be subdivided according to the method of connection to the process pipeline into: threaded, with a clamping nut, triclamp, with a clamp of various kinds of platforms (for homogenizers).

A threaded hygienic diaphragm seal with an external thread (Fig.5.9a) is screwed into a special socket with a mating internal thread and is sealed with a gasket along the lower edge of the device.

Diaphragm hygienic seals with a clamping nut (Fig.5.9b, c) can be sealed along the cone of its body. The mating seat must also have a reverse cone or the form of a cylinder with an external thread, along the upper generatrix of which a seal is made.The sealing force is provided by the corresponding compression nut.

Triclamp (tri clamp fitting – from eng. ) The spacers, which have been actively used in recent years, are intended for hygiene applications. The low working pressure of separators with such a connection (up to 2.5 MPa) compared to flanged ones is compensated by the possibility of quick assembly – disassembly of the installation site (Fig.5.10).

Sealing in triclamp separators is carried out using an elastic gasket mounted between the diaphragm block 1 and the supply unit 2. The material for it is determined by the properties of the measured medium. The diameter of the supply unit is up to 150 mm.

In the food industry, or rather in homogenizers, small-sized finger dividers are used (Fig.5.11).

Diaphragm seals for homogenizers (RMG) are designed for devices where high hygiene requirements and limited space for connecting measuring devices. RMG are installed in a socket, manufactured in a technological case, and are fixed with a clamping platform with bolts.The shape of the pressure pads can be different.

The small dimensions of the membrane suggest the operability of such devices at high pressures (25 MPa and higher).

Compact diaphragm seals (PMM) are compact. In spacers of the adapter type (Fig. 5.12), the body is made in the form of an adapter, to the bottom of which the membrane is welded. In the middle part of the body there is a valve for filling the separator and the device with working fluid.Depending on the seating thread of the seal, the diaphragm diameter can be from 15 to 50 mm. The special material of the separating diaphragm (with its small size – about 13 mm) allows the use of such devices on abrasive media.

Small-sized stainless steel seals can be used for operation at ultra-high pressures (up to 60 MPa and above).

The main disadvantage of small-sized dividers is the need for careful selection of measuring devices. The small diameter of the separating membrane provides for its slight deflection in the range of operating pressures and, accordingly, a small change in the volume of the medium in the space above the membrane, which requires the use of measuring instruments also with a small volume of the inner cavity of the sensitive element. This design of the device can cause measurement errors in some pressure ranges.

Closed dividers differ in the dimensions typical of the device connections. The main application is the separation of the inner cavity of the measuring device from the measured medium, which is characterized by aggressiveness, low freezing point, the presence of unacceptable compounds (oils in oxygen technologies), etc.

Diaphragm seal flanged closed collapsible ( RMFZ-R ) in a prefabricated structure (Fig. 5.13a, b) has a diaphragm 1 fixed between the base with the inlet nozzle 2 and the body with the outlet nozzle 3 with a gasket 4 with fastening bolts 5. seating nests of pressure gauges. The design of the separator with a closed diaphragm as a prefabricated unit on bolted connections allows for servicing directly the diaphragm and the inlet nozzle – the base with the inlet nozzle.In such a design, it is possible to replace the main working element – the membrane.

The small size of the bore of the nozzle determines the difficulty of using this type of separator (with a closed diaphragm) for viscous, solidifying – changing its phase state due to temperature or time, crystallizing media.

The diaphragm in flanged closed dividers is made of various steel grades, various rubbers, thin synthetic films.

Reducing the size and metal consumption can be achieved by replacing the flanges with a threaded body connection, as shown in Figure 5.14.

In the separator shown in fig.5.14a, the diaphragm 1 is fixed between the inlet 2 and the outlet 3, where the tightness is ensured by the gasket 4. The separating element can be different, as, for example, in Figure 5.14b, where the bellows is used 5. In an economical version of the diaphragm flange sealed welded (RMFZ C) (Figure 5.15) membrane 1, installed between the outlet 2 and the inlet 3 nozzles, is connected with one welded joint, which ensures the integrity of the structure and the operability of the structure up to 40 MPa.

The design of the welded version of the RMFZ provides an opening with a locking screw for filling with liquid. The rest of the parts are motionlessly connected to each other. A distinctive feature of such separator designs is their low price.

Small-sized bellows separators (PCM) function, respectively, on the basis of bellows (Fig.5.16). The advantage of this type of device lies in the relatively long stroke of the bellows, its good elastic characteristics and, accordingly, the possibility of a significant reduction in the effect of the separator operation on the accuracy of the manometer readings. High elasticity allows the use of such separators at low pressures. In addition, the bellows allows the separator to be completed with devices in which the volume of the internal space varies significantly with a change in pressure.

A similar design of the separator is known, in which the bellows is made of fluoroplastic. A feature of such a separator is not high demands on the quality of filling: residual air in the internal volume is allowed.

One of the main problems in industrial environments is ensuring the tightness of the connection between the separator and the meter.Very often, the lack of professionalism of the service personnel leads to a breach of the tightness of this connection. Thus, it is not allowed to use gaskets, mounted between the separator and the devices, made of soft heat-shrinkable material. For example, Teflon, when exposure to high temperatures leads to a subsequent change in the geometry of the product. It is also important to use a material for the manufacture of gaskets, which retains its technical characteristics over time.

Often, the use of gaskets made of a relatively soft material leads to a breach of the tightness of the inner cavity of the measuring device and the separator and in most cases is the cause of irreversible deformation of the separating element (membrane, bellows) and failure of the auxiliary device.

All-welded separators with pressure gauge are designed to exclude unauthorized violation of the tightness of the connection between the separator and the measuring device. In some cases, when dismantling the device-separator system from the installation site, as well as during unprofessional maintenance of this system, there are violations of the tightness of the threaded connection between the separator and the device. Such violations lead to fluid leakage from the internal cavity, the appearance of air inclusions in it and, ultimately, irreversible disruptions to the separator’s performance and, often, the device.
