Staples USB 2 Stick Drive 64GB Review

Bought the Staples USB 2 stick drive 64GB version, at Staples® of course, to create a recovery drive for a new laptop computer.  Here we review the pros and cons of this thumb drive that we ran into in this effort.

This stick drive installed without any problems, received copied data as quickly as other high speed USB storage drives we’re used to playing with, and is easy to locate, plug in, and use.  The drive accepted over sixteen gigabytes of recovery file system data without producing any errors whatsoever.

Staples USB 2.0 stick drive, 64 GB, front view of original package. Staples USB 2 stick drive 64GB.

This Staples® stick drive simplifies and provides a highly economical way of sharing data .  At just $8, it’s almost as cheap as yesterday’s CD ROM disks.  Plus, it’s way cheaper than yesteryear’s portable hard disk drives.

USB drives like this one, are quickly loaded with music, pics / photo, video, documents, spread sheets, or any confidential data you wish.  Then, you can carry it from place to place.  Just as those sneaker-wearing couriers did three decades ago with floppies (the infamous sneaker net).

Benefits, Pros, Features, and Advantages of the Staples USB 2 Stick Drive 64GB Model

USB 2.0 for Fast File Transfers

Supports USB 2.0, for high speed data moving to and from.  We experienced data transfer speeds were as snappy quick as hoped for in a USB 2.0 storage device.

Works with Many Types of Digital Devices

Can store media for smart televisions, car stereos, home theater systems, any portable media player that supports USB storage, laptops / notebooks, smart phones, and tablet computers.

Popular Operating Systems Supported

Works with both Windows and Apple Mac based computers.  Windows XP / Vista / 7 / 8 / 10.  MacOS 10.

Device Drivers Automatically Install when you Connect this Staples USB 2 Stick Drive 64GB

No additional CD ROMs or online downloads required.  Windows OS based computers immediately recognize this device when plugged into them, and configure themselves with the necessary driver software.  Software installation completes in less than 45 seconds.

Bright, Flashing Red Data Light

This lamp shows when data are being read and written to this USB stick.

Already Formatted

Comes pre-formatted for wide-spread compatibility across computers running most any version of Windows, Linux, or Mac OS.  Also means that you do not have to spend any time formatting when you take this stick out of the package; can be a real time saver.

Cool to Slightly Warm Operation Over Long Periods

Produces very little heat; so that means very little wasted power.  Use this in your battery-powered laptop or notebook computers, without fear that it will significant increase the drain on your batteries.  Current draw is nearly non existent.

The Staples USB 2 Stick Drive 64GB Features a Limited 2 Year Warranty

Given how quickly we outgrow data storage devices these days, it’s useful that Staples® offers such a warranty with this stick drive, that covers the typical period of time that this thumb drive will likely remain useful.

Free Technical Support

Call 1-800-425-0049.

Requires No Extra or Special Drivers or Software

No drivers or other software needed to use this flash drive on a Windows based computer.

Truly Non Volatile Data Storage

Data stored herein are not easily erased or corrupted by exposure to magnetic fields; unlike floppies or data tapes.

Large Flash Drive, Easy to Find

Stick drives in general are rather small in size, and so, can be easily misplaced.  But this Staples® storage drive is bigger than SDHC memory cards.  So it’s way larger than MicroSD memory chips.  No matter though.  Why?  Because MicroSD chips are really too small to be called, “cards.”  The Staples thumb drive on the other hand, is hard to misplace

Easy to Grab Form Factor on the Staples USB 2 Stick Drive 64GB

Longer and thicker than the SD (Secure Digital) family of memory cards, and so, is more difficult to lose.

Well Suited for Archival Data Storage

Though data speeds are slower with this USB device than with class 10 and higher SD cards, this drive is still plenty fast.  So they are well-suited for archival data storage as well as for streaming audio and most video content.

Spring Loaded, Latching Retractable Cover

A plastic cover slides down over the USB connector. When slid into the open position, it locks into place for easier plug-in.

Upgrade Friendly

Easily replaced with a bigger USB drive when you need more storage.  This is owing to the USB standard itself.  For this reason et al, USB thumb drives have become nearly ubiquitous in so many Information Technology applications.

Problems, Cons, Disadvantages, and Limitations of the Staples USB 2 Stick Drive 64GB Version

Sticks Way Out

The body of this Staples® stick drive spans more than two inches. So when plugged in, it sticks out from the USB port almost two inches.  Thus, take care not to move the host computer with this USB drive plugged in. Doing so could easily snap off this drive or the USB port on the computer.

No USB 3.0 Support

This model does not support USB 3.0 speeds.  But still works in USB 3.0 ports. You just won’t see USB 3.0 speeds.

Data Loss Not Covered by Warranty

Not unusual for any data storage manufacturer to limit liability in this way.  Few, if any, offer free protection against data mutilation.

Our Rating for the 64GB Staples USB 2 Stick Drive

This Staples® line of high speed stick drives is priced on the cheap side at $8 per copy. It is available at Staples® stores, nationwide.

It offers faster speeds, higher storage capacity, and long lasting storage. So why would you not seek to replace your older disc storage mediums with portable solid state storage like this?  We thus rate this stick drive at 97 out of 100.

Speed class guide for SD and microSD cards

UHS Speed Class

The next speed class is the UHS (Ultra-High Speed) Speed Class, which is indicated by the “U” symbol. There are two categories in the UHS Speed Class:

  • U1 (UHS Speed Class 1): minimum write speed 10MB / s
  • U3 (UHS Speed Class 3): 30MB / s minimum write speed

UHS Speed Class is now more commonly used than Speed Class and many professional camera functions such as high definition video recording require a memory card of at least U3.The UHS Speed Class mainly refers to the minimum continuous video recording speed. It is caused by the need for higher recording rates for 4K video recorders. Typically, 4K recording cameras require at least a U3 SD card.

U1 and U3 memory cards perform better than Speed Class cards due to the fact that they use one of the two UHS bus interfaces:

  • UHS-I: theoretical maximum transfer rate up to 104MB / s
  • UHS-II: theoretical maximum transfer rate up to 312MB / s

U1 and U3 memory cards can use the UHS-I bus interface, but are not compatible with the UHS-II bus interface.

These UHS bus interfaces indicate theoretical maximum read and write speeds as opposed to constant write speeds for speed classes. UHS bus interfaces are identified by Roman numerals “I” or “II” on the face of the card. Bus speeds refer to the theoretical baud rate of the interface itself, while a Category U3 SD card has a native continuous write speed of 30MB / s. For example, a UHS-I Category U3 card guarantees 30MB / s write speed, but has the potential for read and write speeds up to 104MB / s when used with a device that supports UHS-I bus interface.

UHS-II compatible memory card has a potential read and write speed of up to 312MB / s. UHS bus interfaces are backward compatible, so you can use a UHS-II card in a device that supports UHS-I, but you won’t see the UHS-II speed benefit as the card will default to lower UHS-I specifications. Both the memory card and the bus interface must be fully compatible for you to experience the speed advantage.

General information on naming rules and labels for SD and microSD memory cards

The

SD Association is responsible for marketing and labeling various categories, functions and specifications of memory cards. There is a list of the different classifications indicated both on the packaging and on the memory card itself. But it can be a little tricky to understand the specifics of the names and understand what they really mean.

One of the most important aspects of classifying memory cards is speed classes. In most cases, the labeling contains a combination of the two classes, which can be a little tricky to understand. Basically, it all started with the original speed class C2, C4, C6 and C10, which specifies the minimum write speeds of 2MB / s, 4MB / s, 6MB / s and 10MB / s.Then the UHS Speed Class was added, which is indicated by the designation U1 or U3 for a minimum write speed of 10MB / s or 30MB / s.

As the SD Association continued to add new speed classes with new names, manufacturers began to combine markings on memory cards, and this can be confusing. For example, a memory card might be labeled C10 and U1, although the names mean the same thing. A camera manufacturer may require their camera to use a C10 rated SD card, but since the SD Association moved to UHS Speed Class and started labeling memory cards as U1, the result would be an SD card labeled both C10 and U1. …

On top of that, card manufacturers find it necessary to use old speed classes alongside new ones, even if their cards have outperformed the old speed classes for a long time. As a result, there are memory cards labeled both C10 and U3. Since U3 means the minimum write speed of 30MB / s, and C10 – 10MB / s, it makes no sense to indicate both speed classes, since U3 already means that the write speed exceeds 10MB / s. The new Video Speed Class is for higher resolution videos such as 4K or 8K, but the V30 card means the same as the U3 card as both classes indicate a minimum write speed of 30MB / s.

Because of the many different naming conventions used, card and memory manufacturers must make sure that consumers can find what they want. The result is memory cards that are labeled according to all three Class-C, UHS and Video speed class standards. And this has to be dealt with by the average consumer who is unfamiliar with naming conventions and labeling.

Specifically, the markings on UHS Speed Class memory cards are the UHS bus interface marked with the Roman numeral “I” or “II”.Usually, the recording looks like “UHS-I” and “UHS-II”, but many memory card manufacturers omit the letters UHS in accordance with the SDA logo guidelines and simply use the symbol “I” or “II” to denote the type of UHS bus interface on the card …

Finally, with the introduction of Android’s Adopted Storage Device feature, a new classification has been introduced. The App Performance Class ensures that random and sequential operations are minimal to meet runtime and storage requirements under specified conditions. At the same time, storage is provided for images, videos, music, files and other important data. In fact, such memory cards are ideal for smartphones and mobile gaming devices, where they are used for running applications, characterized by read and write speeds of arbitrary blocks, and for storing data.

Application Performance Class Characteristics Table
Application performance class Pictogram Minimum random block read speed Minimum random block write rate Minimum continuous sequential write speed
Class 1 (A1) 1500 IOPS 500 IOPS 10MB / s
Class 2 (A2) 4000 IOPS 2000 IOPS 10MB / s

There are two application performance classes, A1 and A2.Class A1 provides a minimum random block read rate of 1500 IOPS and a minimum random block write rate of 500 IOPS, while for A2 these values are 4000 IOPS and 2000 IOPS, respectively. The minimum continuous write speed is 10MB / s for both A1 and A2. If you plan to install Android apps on a microSD card, consider class

Packaging and contents
The acoustics are delivered in a small box with a picture of the product and characteristics.Inside there is a protective insert that houses the device.

Country of manufacture of the device: China. Warranty – 12 months
The PSP-065 package includes everything you need to get started:

  • Speaker
  • Charging cable type C
  • 3.5 mm audio cable
  • User manual
  • Warranty card

User manual is competently localized:

902 Appearance
Immediately, I note a solid monolithic body made of matte soft-touch plastic, with metal meshes on the sides.Case dimensions 186x62x50 mm are modest, a speaker for near-field listening. Alternatively: sound a small laptop, or add musical accompaniment to relaxing in a rocking chair.

Acoustic armament: in front a pair of 2 “full-range speakers, between them a passive radiator, behind a passive radiator with a larger size.
Below service information and small legs:

Mechanical control buttons, large and embossed:

Management is typical. There is no equalizer.
On the right side there is a metal bracket for hanging the column:

On the left – a rubber cap, under which the connectors are hidden:

Micro SD card slot, AUX 3.5mm and C port for charging. No radio and USB for media.
The mass of the device is not small, such a weighty “audio brick”:

Operation
Full charge with a current of 2+ A in 3+ hours. The charge is enough for 13 hours at medium volume, 50% is quite loud for home.

The column is not afraid of jets of water (rain), but it is forbidden to immerse it in water.

It quickly clings to a smartphone via Bluetooth and shows the percentage of the remaining charge:

It accepts calls, it is audible in both directions well.
This model supports the True Wireless Stereo mode, which is when two identical speakers are connected via Bluetooth into one stereo speaker, where each speaker plays its own channel. This broadens the stereo base and gives an excellent surround effect to the sound.

Micro SD cards are supported with 64 GB inclusive. FLAC plays back. No folder navigation. PSP-065 remembers where it played from, but does not remember the volume level.

Measurements and Sound
Measured frequency response of PSP-065 acoustics from 1 meter:

There is a good volume margin, the acoustics do not break into a wheeze, enough to sound the middle room. Low frequencies are not bad for micro portable speakers on full-range speakers with a passive radiator. I also note that the speakers are well directed, the treble is not lost even on the side of the front panel of the case.
In general, the sound of the model is pleasant for its modest size and with authentic vocals. Yes, it doesn’t have a super juicy low end, but meanwhile, the music has a foundation from the bottom.

Conclusion

Harper PSP-065 is an interesting variant of compact portable acoustics. The speaker is loud, but at the same time of modest size and with decent autonomy. The column can be taken for outdoor recreation (it is important not to interfere with the rest of others).

Thank you for your attention. Enjoy the shopping!

Effective walking requires little thought

Scientists have found that people do not need to consciously control walking, they make it most effective automatically, writes eurekalert.org.

When walking by a lake or climbing a mountain, we all adjust our steps to consume as little energy as possible. “People are constantly using up energy and adapting their gait to minimize costs,” says Jessica Selinger of Queen’s University in Canada.“We adapt all kinds of gait characteristics — the speed at which we move, the length and width of each step — to minimize the calories we burn.”

It was not clear how our bodies cope with this feat. Are we constantly monitoring our maneuvers and adjusting consciously, or do we adapt automatically without realizing it? And if we need to think in order to maintain our efficiency, how much mental capacity should we keep in reserve when multitasking? Rachel Blair (University of British Columbia, Canada), Max Donelan (Simon Fraser University, Canada) and Jessica Selinger decided to find out if people consciously adjust their movements, and they realized that people do not need to think in order to walk effectively, they adapt automatically.

“The experimental setup was technical and consisted of many components,” says Blair. He describes how the team started by getting the volunteers to walk on the treadmill at a comfortable speed while listening to the stream of audio signals through their headphones. They had to press with their right hand when the beep was higher than the previous one, or with their left hand when the beep was lower. The team then asked them to try out different walking styles, moving in sync with the metronome, setting a higher or slower pace that was either less or more effective than their normal walking. When the volunteers learned to walk in different ways, the researchers turned off the metronome but activated the leg braces worn by their subjects. “Many participants assumed that the exoskeleton [leg support] device was designed to make walking easier,” says Selinger. However, scientists have sometimes used leg braces to make walking more difficult – much in the same way that climbing stairs requires more effort – forcing volunteers to adapt to their walking to find a more efficient style. Finally, the scientists pooled all of the experiments – asking them to walk in different ways, focusing on recognizing whether the tone they heard was higher or lower than the previous one, while trying to find an effective way to walk. “It was challenging to get all of these aspects to work smoothly and synchronize them with each other,” Blair recalls.

But how effective would volunteers be when so many factors were taken into account? The team reasoned that if they had to think about how to find the most efficient way to walk with leg supports, the distracting audio signals would throw them away and they would use more energy. However, if they were automatically regulated, then, despite the distracting signal, they would naturally change their energy efficiency.

Patiently analyzing the responses of the volunteers, Megan McAllister (Queen’s University) realized that they can automatically adjust their walking efficiency, even when they are distracted by audible cues: “When people adapt to energy-optimized walking patterns, they do it without realizing it.” she says. And this ability to adapt our movements without thinking allows us to focus on other tasks while walking, including tracking bumps in the road and thinking about our hectic lives.

90,000 Day September 12 in history

Tankman’s Day.

Celebrated annually on the second Sunday in September. Established by the decree of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin “On the establishment of professional holidays and memorable days in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation” dated May 31, 2006.

The history of Russian armored forces goes back to the beginning of the 20th century. During the First World War, the first British tanks appeared on the battlefields, and all European states began to manufacture their heavy mechanized weapons. In Russia, for example, the tankette “All-terrain vehicle” by Alexander Porokhovshchikov, “Tsar-tank” by Nikolai Lebedenko, etc. were developed and tested.

the troops of the Red Army already had 11 autotank detachments.

Eight years later, serial production of armored vehicles was launched in the USSR, and the new generation tanks, T-34 and KV, created in the 1930s at the design bureau under the leadership of Mikhail Koshkin and Joseph Kotin, were significantly superior in their combat capabilities to similar foreign models.

During the Great Patriotic War, tank units and formations were the main links of the defense of our country. The actions of Soviet tank forces have forever entered the world history of military art. More than 1 thousand tankers were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, 16 people were awarded this title twice.

And today tank troops are the most important element of the Ground Forces of the Russian Armed Forces. They are based on tank brigades and tank battalions of motorized rifle brigades, which are highly resistant to the damaging factors of nuclear weapons, firepower, high mobility and maneuverability.Currently in service are various modifications of the T-72, T-80 and T-90 tanks. In 2020, serial production of the newest T-14 “Armata” tanks began.

United Nations South-South Cooperation Day.

Originally, this memorable date, established by a resolution of the UN General Assembly in 2004, was celebrated on December 19. In 2011, the General Assembly decided that, starting in 2012, this holiday will be postponed to 12 September. On this day in 1978, at the UN Conference on Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries, the Buenos Aires Action Plan for the Development and Implementation of Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries was adopted.

International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Fascism.

Celebrated since 1962 on the second Sunday of the first month of autumn and is timed to coincide with two key dates of the Second World War: the day of its beginning – September 1, 1939, and the end – September 2, 1945.

The war, which was unleashed by Nazi Germany, fascist Italy and militarist Japan, involved 62 states out of 73 that existed at that time (80% of the world’s population). The fighting was conducted in Europe, Asia and Africa, as well as in the waters of four oceans – the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Arctic.

Total human losses in World War II ranged from 60 to 65 million people, of which about 30 million were killed on the fronts.

World crane day.

Celebrated since 2002 on the second Sunday in September.

The ancestors of these birds appeared at the time of the dinosaurs, about 40-60 million years ago. The historical homeland of cranes is considered to be North America, from where they migrated first to Asia, and then to Africa and Australia.

Today, the population of these birds is widespread throughout the world, with the exception of Antarctica and South America. In total, there are about 15 species of cranes, of which 7 nest in Russia.

35 years ago (1986) the Trans-Baikal National Park was formed.

The park was created on the eastern coast of Lake Baikal. It included

such unique beauty natural complexes as the Svyatoy Nos peninsula, the islands of the Chivyrkuisky bay, the Barguzinsky and Chivyrkuisky bays, etc. The territory of the park is 233 thousand hectares.

In the Zabaikalsky National Park there are over 10 thousand hectares of pine, cedar and fir forests aged 200 years and older. The park is home to over 300 species of animals. The largest rookery of the Baikal seal is located on the Ushkany Islands.

62 years ago (1959) the automatic station “Luna-2” was launched to the Moon.

The programs for studying the Moon began in the USSR in 1959: in January, the first space probe, Luna-1, was launched. The station passed at a distance of 5 thousand kilometers from the Earth satellite.

On September 12, 1959, the Vostok-L carrier rocket was launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome, which put the automatic station Luna-2 on the flight path to the Moon.

The station was a sealed container in the shape of a sphere, which housed scientific-measuring and radio-technical equipment.

Two days later, Luna-2, having made the world’s first flight from Earth to another celestial body, reached the surface of the Moon and made a hard landing in the Sea of Rains near the craters Aristilles, Archimedes and Autolycus.

80 years ago (1941) the legendary “Road of Life” began its work.

The blockade of Leningrad began on September 8, 1941, when the fascist troops, capturing Shlisselburg, cut off the land communication between the city and the country.More than 2.5 million inhabitants, including 400 thousand children, remained in the city. The last opportunity to somehow supply the besieged Leningrad was Lake Ladoga.

On September 12, 1941, the first convoy of ships arrived at the port of Osinovets, which delivered 800 tons of grain and 60 tons of ammunition. Until November 15, when the navigation was officially over, more than 24 thousand tons of grain, flour and cereals, over 1 thousand tons of meat and dairy products and other goods were delivered to the city. 33.5 thousand civilians and wounded were evacuated.

With the beginning of winter, an ice track was launched on Lake Ladoga, which residents of the city called “Dear Life”. At first, they drove along it by sleigh, and as the ice cover strengthened, they drove by cars.

During the first, most difficult, blockade winter of 1941-1942, over 360 thousand tons of cargo were delivered to Leningrad along the Road of Life, 6 rifle divisions and a tank brigade were transported. 539 thousand 400 Leningraders were evacuated.

On January 18, 1943, Soviet troops took Shlisselburg, and the blockade of the city was broken.

The total amount of cargo transported to Leningrad along the Road of Life for the entire period of its operation amounted to over 1.6 million tons. About 1.4 million people were evacuated from the city.

129 years ago (1892) philanthropist Pavel Tretyakov wrote an application to the Moscow City Duma to donate his collection of paintings to the city, as well as the collection of his brother Sergei.

The Tretyakov brothers began collecting paintings in the mid-1850s. In 1867, the Moscow City Gallery of Pavel and Sergei Tretyakov was opened to the public. The collection was originally exhibited in their family home in Lavrushinsky Lane.

After the death of his brother, Pavel Tretyakov wrote an application to the Moscow City Duma to donate his collection to the city, as well as the collection of Sergei Mikhailovich. At that time, the collection included 1287 paintings and 518 graphic works of the Russian school, 75 paintings and 8 drawings of the European school, 15 sculptures and a collection of icons. On September 15, 1892, the Duma at its meeting officially accepted the gift and decided to apply for the appropriation of the donated collection of the name “City Art Gallery of Pavel and Sergei Mikhailovich Tretyakov.”

On August 15, 1893, the official opening of the museum under the name “Moscow City Gallery of Pavel and Sergei Mikhailovich Tretyakov” (now the Tretyakov Gallery) took place.

Today it is a large museum complex with one of the world’s largest collections of Russian fine art. The collection of the museum includes over 180 thousand works of art.

306 years ago (1715) Peter I issued a decree forbidding the residents of St. Petersburg to knock out boots and shoes with staples and nails.

This was done to preserve the wood cover of the capital’s streets. The decree said: “And if someone with such a lining appears boots or shoes, they will be severely fined, and the merchants who hold such staples and nails will be sent to hard labor; and their property will be taken. ”

81 years ago (1940), the Lascaux cave was found in France.

This unique historical landmark was accidentally discovered by schoolchildren from the nearby settlement of Montignac.Walking in the woods, they saw a narrow hole going under the root of a fallen tree. The teenagers dug up the entrance and saw a cave, the walls of which were covered with drawings made with ocher and soot. All depicted figures, both people and animals (bulls, bison, rhinoceroses, horses, deer, etc.) were drawn in full size.

Realizing the importance of their discovery, the teenagers told about it to their teacher, and he told the specialist in the history of primitive society Henri Breuil. The scientist was the first to establish the authenticity of the rock paintings, and also studied and described them.

Despite the hardships of wartime, already in December 1940, the local authorities achieved the assignment of the status of the historical monument of France to the Lascaux cave. In October 1979, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, along with other prehistoric sites and rock art caves in the Weser Valley.

Lasko Cave is one of the most important Late Paleolithic monuments in terms of the number and preservation of rock carvings. Sometimes it is called the “Sistine Chapel of Primitive Painting” or the prehistoric Versailles. To date, about 2 thousand drawings of animals, people and symbols have been recorded here (according to other sources, about 6 thousand). The exact age of the images could not be determined. It is believed that they appeared about 15-18 thousand years ago. For a long time, scientists attributed the images to the ancient Madeleine culture, but recent studies have shown that they most likely belong to the earlier Solutrean culture.

90,000 Where and how “Dune” was filmed

On September 16, a new film by Oscar nominee Denis Villeneuve will start at the Russian box office DUNE .A project co-produced with Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, is an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s bestselling book of the same name.

The heir to the famous house of Atreides, Paul, travels with his family to one of the most dangerous planets in the Universe – Arrakis. There is nothing here but sand, a scorching sun, giant monsters … and the main cause of intergalactic conflicts is an incredibly valuable resource called melange. As a result of the seizure of power, Paul is forced to run and hide, and this becomes the beginning of his epic journey. The hostile world of Arrakis has prepared many difficult trials for him, but only those who are ready to face their fears are worthy of becoming the chosen one.

The roles in the film were played by Timothy Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Batista, Stephen Henderson, Zendaya, Chan Chen, as well as Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem and others.

Villeneuve choreographed DUNE based on a screenplay he co-wrote with John Spates and Eric Roth (Forrest Gump) based on a novel by Frank Herbert. The film was produced by Mary Parent ( SURVIVOR ), Villeneuve himself, Cale Boyter and Joseph M. Carachiolo.

LOCATION AND DECORATION

Planet Arrakis, or Dune, is a huge desert with endless sunsets and ascetic beauty. To bring Villeneuve’s vision to life, creative teams led by director of photography Greg Fraser and production designer Patrice Vermette worked to ensure that the camera captures the atmosphere as accurately as possible. This meant abandoning the green screen and creating an ideal world of DUNES on Earth, in the sound stages of Origo Studios in Budapest, on sets in Jordan and Abu Dhabi.

Sound pavilions in the Hungarian capital have already been used by the studio, but not once – for filming of this scale.

Once Villeneuve and Fraser began working together on DUNE , they quickly hit it off. First of all, according to Villeneuve, they agreed that they would use the IMAX format for certain episodes of the film, such as Paul’s visions, his dreams and shots of the desert. The rest was decided to shoot in 2:35 format. With this decision, it was planned to enhance the effect of the IMAX image among viewers. The team also decided that the desert scenes would be handheld, but the rest of the world would be done in a more familiar way.

Fraser confirms and complements the director’s words. “We tried to create that very harsh environment that Denis was talking about. First of all, he said, “When I think about this film, the 4: 3 format comes to my mind.”This is a large screen format. We developed this idea and suggested doing 2:35 along with 4: 3 and IMAX to see what happens. Having discussed these ideas in different ways, we came to an agreement. ”

In terms of color, Fraser notes, the directors have tried several options. Villeneuve wanted Arrakis to look harsh and desolate, inhospitable to outsiders, so shooting in a clear sky was minimized. Fraser says that there are many photographs of the desert where the sky is blue and the sand is yellow. However, Villeneuve and Fraser were leaning towards white skies and faded, discolored sand. At first, the authors had heated discussions about whether to use a digital camera or a film camera. “The film has an excellent format and an undeniable, stunning quality; moreover, it is analog, and in this there is something warm, close to people, he explains. But then a problem arose: filming with Alex would have given us the quality and warmth we needed, but without the feeling of nostalgia that the film offers. “

As a result, a different technology was used: the film was made from a “digital”, that is, when editing the film in the Fotokem laboratory, they shot it on film and made a negative. Then this negative was scanned again, so the film is still somewhat analogue. As Fraser notes, he played with this technology for a while, but it hasn’t been used for a feature film before.

Producer Mary Parent also praised the work of the creative team. “Greg is one of the best DPs.The way he shot, achieved the right light and detail … It’s so tangible, so touching and intuitive … At the same time, the camera’s movement is not felt at all; there is no fuss, everything serves the storytelling and disclosure of characters, in this case of Dune itself. And the fact that Patrice built in Budapest was good old Hollywood, – she continues. – Such huge scenery is now rarely seen everything is drawn in CGI, but for the sake of this film Denis decided to do everything for real.So this time we built on a big scale. ”

Studios Origo created, among others, the interiors of the premises from the planet Caladan, where the film begins – for example, the setting of the huge library, where Lady Jessica and the Reverend Mother Mohaiem discuss the future of Paul, as well as the halls of the Atreides residence. A steam room was also built in the studio on Gidi Prime, where we first meet Baron Harkonnen. Some outdoor scenes, including the ornithopter landing on Arrakis, were filmed in the studio’s backyard. The expert team included about a thousand people.

“When creating the environment, I set a goal to bring it as close as possible to that described by Herbert how he portrayed furniture, halls, buildings, architecture, light, so that even the most dedicated fans will recognize the author’s handwriting, – explains Villeneuve. – I wanted to convey the spirit of the book in everything, just like the author, to be inspired by nature: light, wind, the feeling of dust in the air. Dune is a majestic world unlike what we know.Of course, I trusted Patrice to help me create it. ”

After reading the script, Vermett immediately began to compose a collage of photographs from various countries – from Egypt to Norway, images of architectural fragments, even footage of a military chronicle filmed in Afghanistan and the Persian Gulf. This collage was then included in Patrice’s book of illustrations, which included sketches of each set, all set items and costumes. It was distributed between departments for further work. “It was important for me that we were all ‘on the same page’, so if someone asked, ‘How should it look?’, I invariably answered: ‘Look in the book, everything is written there.’

Vermette designed the Caladan palette predominantly in dull greens, grays and blues to create a constant wet and rainy feel. Caladan Castle is built into the rock, which symbolizes the unity of the House of Atreides with nature. The restrained shades of green give way to bright browns, ocher and reddish-brown when the story is transferred to Arrakis. In turn, the industrial planet Guidi Prime appears to be made of plastic.

Decorator Richard Roberts sought to ensure that interior décor helped create the overall atmosphere of the scene, rather than draw attention to itself. The furniture was chosen to look austere in the painting. All items were custom made in Denmark, from furniture and lamps to banners and carpets. Then they, like other props, were artificially aged. One of the most ambitious designs ever created by Vermett is an ornithopter, a huge aircraft that flutters over Dune.Vermette designed it in collaboration with concept artist George Hull and ornithopter art director David Doran. According to Vermett, the appartar has very movable wings – thanks to them, it can hover in the air like a hummingbird or a dragonfly. The span of these wings is almost 40 meters, the length is about 23. The artist’s “models” were birds, insects and helicopters.

At the same time, two versions of the ornithopter’s pilot cabins were designed at Origo studio: one was placed on a suspended frame in the film studio, the other on the same suspension was installed on a hill in Fot near Budapest.

The team spent nearly four weeks in the Jordanian desert of Wadi Rum, which gave the crew the opportunity to create some views of Arrakis, and also served as the basis for a number of visual effects and shots taken from helicopters. Villeneuve had already shot films in Jordan and was well aware of the treasures to be found there. As the director notes, there is quite a lot of drama in the local landscapes, which is just right for DUNES .

Spectacular views are not the only thing Jordan attracts cinematographers. “There are a lot of experienced people there to help you choose and arrange a shooting site, ,” says Villeneuve. – Organization and management there are established at the highest level: all roads in the desert are marked on the map, equipment is the latest technology. Jordanians are very hospitable people: there were almost 800 of us the film is not small, but I still had the feeling that I was making a movie with friends. It was very touching to come back ten years after shooting FIRES and meet the same assistants, who, moreover, have become much more experienced. “

One of the main filming locations is called the “War Dunes” locally – it is located on the border with Israel, and the army uses it for training. Previously, it was not available for visits, so the filmmakers were in luck. The film crew DUNES was the first to be allowed to shoot there, although the advantages of such shooting were accompanied by unexpected disadvantages: previously, no one went to this completely virgin part of the desert. The dunes are freely displaced by the wind, they crumble and are formed anew, which extremely complicates the work of the film crew. Some of the biggest action scenes were filmed in this location, including the key spice harvester, which George Hull describes as a cross between a desert scarab and a rocket engine.

Prior to the arrival of the film crew, General Set Manager Nick Oliver and his team had to set up base camp for the four weeks of filming. Since that part of Jordan has nothing but sand, it took almost six weeks and 200 workers to build the camp and supply it with everything needed. The team created a huge infrastructure: they brought block containers, deployed a mobile network, and in the main division, instead of trailers or caravans, they installed stationary houses for the actors. They also had air compressors to keep the sand from clogging up equipment and electronics. As soon as work was completed in one location, the team drove on to the next base, and started all over again.

The team faced many logistical challenges, especially when delivering a giant ornithopter model to the set.Oliver and his colleagues had to pave a road through the desert so that six-wheeled trucks could transport the unit to the shooting location. It took a lot of insurer work to complete the scene in which Duncan Idaho falls from the sky onto the cliffs, and a 300-ton crane was hired to hold the stunt rig’s rope rig and keep it safe. On another site, called “Stone Bowl”, there were unforeseen difficulties with the installation of the belay, as the surface of the rock turned out to be loose, and it was forbidden to drill it by the law of nature protection. The team had to bring specialists from Amman, who found areas where it was possible, without damaging the rock, to install brackets strong enough to hold the stuntmen on the cables.

SUITS, MAKE-UP AND HAIRSTYLES

Costume Designers Jacqueline West and Bob Morgan were responsible for many of the outfits used by the characters in the film. They were required to design many futuristic costumes without resorting to standard guidelines. From the very beginning, Villeneuve said: “No spacecraft and aliens.”He needed more psychology.

Dressers have moved from Los Angeles to Budapest and gathered around experienced colleagues from all over the world. West and Morgan shoveled mountains of material relating to the future and the past. “Denis talked a lot about nomads, about the desert people and different deserts in the world, about how people dress to survive there ,” West recalls. – We reviewed a lot of paintings, medieval miniatures I once studied them in the course of art history.I looked through many paintings by Goya, which fascinated me with how they represent a religious theme, good and evil. The novel also contains references to ancient Greek mythology, which led me to another rabbit hole. ”.

The costume designers have also strived to make their creations functional. “From all the materials we studied, it followed that appearance should be subordinate to function, explains Morgan. This involved the entire costume, starting with the shoes, and depended on what the characters had to do to survive, especially in the desert. At the same time, the costumes had to look believable for a world whose technologies have nothing to do with computer technologies and seem rather primitive by the standards of our ideas about the future. We later called this style modern-medieval. ”

West and Morgan drew on the general color scheme of the planets on which the characters lived. The Atreides’ costumes were mostly green, as the planet Caladan is cool and damp, it rains often, and the grass and trees grow violently.Arrakis, on the other hand, is covered with a rocky desert, so the costumes of the locals had to be sandy yellow and beige. One of the most important suits was the condensation suit, a high-tech Freeman jumpsuit. Thanks to the technology of collecting and filtering liquid, the suit allows you to survive in the desert. According to the book, inside the distycombe there is a complex system of tubules with a fluid supply and a nasal tube for evacuating exhaled air. The suit also contains a system for processing urine and sweat, so that its wearer only loses a sip of water per day.The concept art for the distycombe was drawn by artist Keith Christensen. Morgan and West added translucent raincoats and capes to the look, which served in many ways as camouflage. Their gritty color diversified the gray tones of the distycombs.

For each of the armies, a different military uniform of a specific color was made: for the sardukars – the ruthless elite fighters of the emperor – white armored suits with red insignia were designed, which burned ominously in the dark. The Atreides wore gray armor, while the Harkonnens were insect-like in black scale armor and helmets that looked like ant heads.

For the Reverend Mother Moiyam, the artists chose an image that combines the features of a chess queen and a lady from the Marseille tarot. The black and formal suit consists of a floor-length dress with long sleeves and a cape decorated with sewing. Her high headdress resembles the kamilavka of Greek monks, trimmed with black velvet, with a black beaded veil covering her face.

The monstrous Baron Harkonnen was inspired by the role of Colonel Kurz from APOCALYPSE TODAY Coppola played by Marlon Brando.Baron Harkonnen is the focus of darkness. Its authors dressed in a slightly translucent black silk mantle.

Lady Jessica’s wardrobe presented a particular challenge for artists, since in Caladan she was dressed in dark, almost monastic robes, and in Arrakis she wears brighter, sunny shades. We first see her in a long black dress with a veil over her head, and upon arrival at Arrakis, she wears a tight-fitting beige dress, complemented by an exquisite gold veil and gloves, and a flying hooded cloak. Her maids of honor are also dressed in outfits of all shades of the desert – yellow, ocher, amber. Their colors were spotted by the creative team at the spice market in Marrakech.

For Pieter de Vries, he and Morgan created a dagger-man suit – tight, black and strict. His other outfit was a tribute to one of West and Villeneuve’s favorite films – SEAL Bergman.

Paul Atreides’ costume also owes its origin to another film classic shot in the desert. “For me, explains Morgan, – Paul Atreides was always Lawrence of Arabia, who led the Arab army to fight the Turks. Perhaps the way he was dressed in the desert, with a bandage on his head and a cloak, was our tribute to David Lean. ”

Make-up, hair and make-up were handled by Donald Movat, who is working with Villeneuve for the fourth time. The artist admitted that, unlike the rest of the project participants, he had not read the book. He describes his makeup and hairstyle sketches as “reality-based with modern and archaic elements, designed for incredible cast and extras.”

Movat drew inspiration from articles on anthropology, art history, photography, and even monastery life. So he created different images for each Freeman nomad. Soldier Atreides in the film can be recognized by his haircut, reminiscent of the military, with a shaved head and temples.

The cast appreciated Movat’s creativity. Rebecca Ferguson says about Lady Jessica: “We decided that Jessica should look almost dull, since she is not a queen with a king, but in fact a concubine. She has a lot of power, but not the kind that seeks attention. She is a protector, standing one step behind Leto, far from her eyes. So Donald designed a very simple look without makeup, which suited her perfectly. ”

Garni Holleck, the Atreides warlord played by Josh Brolin, needed to add a scar for more naturalism, originality and, of course, consistency with the plot. For Stilgar, the leader of the Freemen, Movat, he said, wanted to cook something special. He worked closely with Javier Bardem to do what he liked – this is how the “old” tattoos and makeup around the eyes appeared.

Harkonnens are generally stylized, hairless with bone / alabaster makeup, brow patches and fake bald patches. The ruthless sardukars were given a more masculine look with beards, slicked-back hair and tattoos on their foreheads.

For the creature of Dave Batista and Peter de Vrieux Dastmalchyan, a more complex make-up was required – a lip tattoo was added to the mentat (by analogy with Safir Hawat from the House of Atreides performed by Stephen McKinley Henderson). The most difficult work was the creation of the image of Baron Harkonnen. “It was a whole epic, – Movat recalls, – because Stellan Skarsgård was in a“ naked ”full-size plastic suit. With a character like this, it is very easy to spoil the makeup. It can become comical, because in such a costume the actor immediately becomes like a character from AUSTIN POWERS or YOUR BRITASHE . In part at the same time as West and Morgan, Movat discovered that he saw the Baron as a ferocious, gorilla-like hybrid of the roles of Marlon Brando from APOCALYPSE TODAY and ISLANDS OF DR. MORO .

Movat recruited a team of two Swedish make-up artists, Love Larson and Eva von Bar, to create the costume. First, it was necessary to make an impression of Skarsgard’s head, face and entire body: the actor had to stand motionless for almost two hours under a heavy layer of silicone and plaster casts to maintain the silicone mold and frame. “Denis and Stellan liked the way he looked without clothes, – explains Larson, – so Jacqueline West and Bob Morgan, the costume designers, began to develop new concepts for his costume from thinner, translucent fabric that does not hide the body.”

In total, the Stockholm workshop produced six plastic costumes, which were worked on by a full-time staff and two hired Spanish sculptors to complete the body relief. The costumes were to be used for the scenes with Baron Harkonnen in the bathhouse, where new difficulties awaited the team of make-up artists. “We ran a series of tests on the suit in the water ,” says von Bar, “ and soon realized that it was too buoyant to submerge easily. Besides, once there, the suit turned into a sponge and absorbed so much water that it became even more difficult to get it! ” I also had to make holes in order to let the seat belts pass through them, since according to the plot the baron was also supposed to float in the air.The crew needed to be constantly on the lookout for flight scenes, checking the reliability of the structure when Skarsgård landed.

The process of putting on the costume took about seven hours. Von Bar recalls: “Stellan was getting very hot in his suit, so we first put him on a cooling vest, which helped a little. Then we had to hide the hair under an artificial bald spot, close the neck with an overlay and put on the head part with an overlap on the back , one of the most voluminous. Then it was the turn to sculpt the chin, cheeks and ears. The next step was brace pads with a total weight of about four kilos. And finally, we put on the muscular inner suit, and then leather. ”

EFFECTS AND SOUND

Tom Straters, Stunt Coordinator and Supporting Director, had to prepare all the action scenes at DUNE to make sure they were entertaining and safe for both the actors and stuntmen. The stunts and fight scenes designed by Straters and fight director Roger Yuan turned out to be some of the most difficult in Jason Momoa’s memory. “In one scene, I fought nineteen stuntmen at the same time, which has never happened to me ,” he explains. – We trained for a long time before filming. Denis doesn’t usually shoot action films, so it was unusual to feel his excitement and find out how he sees the finished scene. ”

Rebecca Ferguson was surprised at how accurately Yuan and Straters captured Lady Jessica’s character in her fighting manner. “Jessica has a very precise way of fighting, ,” explains the actress. – And this is perfect for her, because she, as a bodyguard and protector, keeps the whole situation under control, reads people, foresees what is about to happen. She is very quick and agile mentally and physically, and so is her fighting technique. ”

Villeneuve’s team also included special effects expert Gerd Nefzer, who was asked to recreate raging sandstorms, where the main characters were caught in key moments of the plot. This despite the fact that Villeneuve was determined to shoot most of the film without resorting to CGI. To recreate the sandstorm, Neftzer had to stock up on dust that matched the Jordanian sands. It took almost ten weeks to find her. “The color had to match exactly, and it had to float easily in the air, – says the specialist. – We ended up using a natural product that is commonly used in cosmetics. In order to avoid health problems, it was necessary to monitor what the actors and the crew were breathing, so we tried to keep our ‘dust’ away from them and use it only on the camera. “

For the painting, it was also necessary to create a storm with rain, steam for the bathhouse of Baron Harkonnen, simulate explosions and fires. For example, in the garden on Arrakis, there were several precious palm trees that, according to the scenario, were supposed to catch fire. After several tests, the team erected approximately 250 palm branches on steel trunks, into which gas was passed. Externally, the trees remained intact, despite the 10 kilometers of the gas pipe passed through.

Neftzer also needed to portray the appearance of an attack by sandworms – gigantic burrowing creatures that can sense movement on the surface for miles and move underground at incredible speed. The worms themselves were created by a visual effects team led by Paul Lambert. When the worms move underground, the whole desert shakes and the sand shakes. To create this effect, Nefzer says, they built a large platform in the desert and connected ten vibration motors: “We ran tests with different kinds of sand and ended up using a large wooden rotor along with strong vibration motors. It worked well. ”

Lambert knew that Villeneuve wanted to show the audience the most realistic Dune possible. In collaboration with other departments in the studio, he was able to come up with many different approaches to achieve photographic realism from visual effects. Such a unique approach was the invention of the sand screen: instead of taking a blue or green screen, the team made it a sand color, since all rirphones or computer backgrounds will be painted in these colors. This way, all the foreground action scenes will be shot in the correct shades, which greatly facilitated the task of merging the layers. The bonus of this technology is that when the sand color is inverted during compositing, cyan is obtained, which can then be used as a screen for the more traditional subtraction method if necessary. Of course, there were some difficulties with the sand screen – leather and clothes of a similar color added difficulties in processing, but when shooting, it turned out more, and when compositing – a much more natural-looking material, obtained by subtracting from the background shades similar to the final one. As Lambert points out, this is a simple but appropriate technique for this film, in which sand plays such an important role.

In addition to the visual aspect of cinema, there is also an audio component. Mark Mangini and Theo Green acted as sound editors, while Doug Hefhill and Ron Bartlett were the sound engineers for the re-recording. Together they worked on BLADE RUNNER 2049 . The editors immediately began to discuss key repetitive audio elements of the plot, one of which was the sound of the beater used by the Freemen to lure the sandworms. Mangini also revealed that they soon returned to their training ground to create the recording. “During the day in the desert, we developed the elements of the sand drum, even buried the hydrophones in the sand, microphones used under water, and banged on the sand to achieve the desired effect. With the help of hydrophones, – he adds, – we still managed to catch a new sound for us underground moan, which few people have heard of. Huge masses of sand at a certain humidity and temperature, at certain times of the year, emit a groan similar to the beautiful singing of whales. In the film, this gave the desert the property of a separate character: it seemed to have found a voice. ”

The voice turned out to be another unexpected tool in the creation of the picture when Villeneuve again turned to Hans Zimmer for the creation of the musical accompaniment. Knowing that Zimmer was an admirer of Herbert’s novel, Villeneuve hoped from the outset to join forces with the composer. “We agreed that music should be spiritualized, almost ecclesiastical, – says Villeneuve. – One that would uplift the soul as only religious chant can.And I’m sure Hans managed to achieve this. Hans was inspired by the sounds of sand and wind, because on Dune rhythm is everything. The rhythm is life, although it can be death as well, as it attracts sandworms. So the first thing we stated was that our approach to rhythm would be unique. While we were busy filming, Hans did a lot of experiments: he tried to define a new musical language. He constantly told me that this music is not from our world, but from another planet, from another era.He wanted to create a sound environment that we had never heard before, and month after month he came up with new instruments, searched, created new sounds, pushed the boundaries. The film contains ragged, spasmodic rhythms from Hans’ repertoire, which seem to me to be the canon of new music, ” concludes Villeneuve.

Zimmer began to invent tools, developing the idea that there is a completely different civilization on Dune. However, both authors considered one thing common to any civilization: the power of the human voice. “Denis and I agreed that this story is being made by female characters (with a particularly powerful influence from Binet Gesserit) ,” the composer notes. – So the soundtrack for the film is based mostly on female voices. We have developed our own language. The musical component of the film is something extraordinary, going beyond the concept of orchestral accompaniment. ”

Editor Joe Walker also describes the nuances of editing for IMAX . “In the editing room it was almost impossible to see all the details that were visible on the big screen, so you had to constantly switch. It’s still great to sit and view everything in IMAX format: every detail is visible when you look at the desert in such a resolution. The detail in those shots was incredible. However, IMAX has to mount a little differently, says Walker. – We have to make a compromise, because if you cut and change frames too often, people begin to strain their eyes. When the gaze has to rush from one point to another, twenty meters away, this is a serious muscle effort, and it is better not to overdo it.Therefore, in some of these scenes, we approached editing from the perspective of the audience: we just sat and enjoyed the splendor.
