Geography Coursework- Summer 2003 Introduction Our coursework is based on Meadowhall shopping centre and Sheffield city centre. We visited both places to collect data. The main theme of this coursework is to compare Meadowhall with Sheffield city centre. The key question is: The great success of outer town shopping centres like Meadowhall has been because they are much better for both shoppers and retailers than traditional shopping centres like Sheffield CBD. Do you agree? Meadowhall is situated at the edge of Sheffield; it is one of the seven major out of town shopping centres in the U.K. Meadowhall opened on 4th September1990, since this time Meadowhall has continued to grow in popularity. One of the reasons for this rapid growth was because of the area that surrounds it. Sheffield’s most popular attractions are within a couple of miles of Meadowhall shopping centre e.g. The Don Valley Stadiums, Sheffield Arena and the Sheffield city airport. These attractions have developed the success of Meadowhall. From my research I will be assessing how successful Meadowhall is compared to Sheffield city centre. The Sheffield city centre is a traditional place for the local people of Sheffield to shop. Sheffield is located in South Yorkshire and it attracts local customers, as it is easy for local people to access. This picture shows that there is no way for vehicles to be taken into the Sheffield CBD. This is a disadvantage for the retailers as they may receive stock after a longer period of time because of the uneasiness of delivery transport. Relating back to the key question the above evidence answers it, as Meadowhall is successful to both customers and retailers. -Customers- as they have a wider variety of products and useful facilities which are not provided in the Sheffield city centre. They also have opportunities to entertainment etc. -Retailers- as goods can be delivered faster and easily through the motorway, so they also have a wider range of products and this means more customers and profits. Environmental Quality The survey below shows the building quality, it gives an index number of between 0 and 10. The nearer the number to 10 the better is the quality of shops and environment. One example could be that if a product from the same branch were to be sold in a shop in Meadowhall it would make more profit than it would in Sheffield city centre. When visitors come to shop they do not think about prices but things like because it is an out of town shopping centre at the edge of a city and next to the M1, the route is very easy to find. One big reason why out of town shopping centres are more popular within customers is because they are advertised through media. So retailer’s higher prices knowing customers would be interested. Although out of town shopping centres are rare. There are only 7 major out of town shopping centres and the government have decided that no more should be build. Retailers in traditional shopping centres would loose they jobs. Central business districts are obviously very important to local residents who may visit because they camp buy quality for less. It may also be an issue when a visitor goes to shop but only needs to purchase a few products. Personally I would prefer city centres than out of town chopping centres, because they are traditional and are open. Evaluation During my investigation I think that my results are fairly accurate and reliable to present and prove. I have supported the ideas towards the key question. If I were to criticize my experiment I would use more resources to make more reliable proof. I would include retailer’s questionnaires in my investigation and try to study it in more depth. Relief and excitement as Yorkshire’s non-essential shops lift their shutters for the first time in over three months

Shutters were lifted as business owners who have longed for the day to come were able to welcome their first in-person shoppers since lockdown was announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson on January 4.

It was the third time in 12 months that shops had been ordered to close to help combat the spread of coronavirus, but the Prime Minister has repeatedly assured the public that this lockdown lifting is “cautious but irreversible.”

And part two of the government’s road map was able to take place as planned yesterday, with shops, gyms, swimming pools and salons finally re-opened, as well as outdoor hospitality.

In Leeds, queues formed outside shops at 8am on Briggate, with shoppers snaking around King Edward Street for Debenhams’ closing down sale.

And in York residents were encouraged to visit the city centre with new outdoor seating installed for shoppers, and an under-cover area on Parliament Street.

Ashley Young, senior marketing and communications manager at Make It York said: “York has so many incredible independent retailers and a world-class hospitality industry, and it’s a positive step forward that we can start to see some of the businesses that we’ve greatly missed over the last few months now reopening.

“Local York businesses need our support more than ever before and so it’s really vital that people shop local and get behind the wonderful retailers and hospitality businesses we have in the city.”

For Philippa Morris, owner of the Little Apple Bookshop on High Petergate in York city centre, being able to finally open to the doors to book lovers has been a massive relief.

Ms Morris said: “We’ve had little kids already come in wanting to spend their book tokens, and one of my customers said she’s been quite giddy.

“York has been busy all the way through with outdoor areas open. We’re relieved, and it’s just nice to feel we’ve got through it. There was a little bit of anxiety, but we will be as safe as we can.

The shop has been open for online sales during lockdown, but for some traders, all business ceased when shops closed their doors.

Gary Gittins, who trades in three independent shops in Sheffield’s Meadowhall centre, doesn’t run an online operation for his gift shops, which include a specialist Harry Potter store. He said the support he’s had from his units’ landlords has made the difference between him being able to re-open or not.

He said: “Landlords get a bad press, but to be fair, I’ve seen mine in a different light. I’ve got three boys who all work for me, I’ve built this business up over 12 years with a view to having something there for my boys. When something likes Covid comes along, you think ‘oh my goodness’, but we’re still here.

“We’ve no online presence. We’ve never been interested in it – we’re all about physical stores and meeting people, you just meet people that love the whole gift experience, and that are really passionate about what they’re into – the Harry Potter geeks are brilliant, we love them.

And on the region’s outdoor markets, traders selling non-essential items were also happy to be reunited with their regular customers. Annie Ford, from Masham, who stands on four markets in North Yorkshire selling artisan gifts, returned to Thirsk market yesterday for the first time in three months.

Mrs Ford said: “It’s been fantastic, and great to see other traders, we are happy to be back. It’s been a frustrating time.

“We’ve had a few of my regulars back today. I’ve done lots of walking and DIY during lockdown but there’s nothing like being at work.”

Coun Carl Les, leader of North Yorkshire County Council encouraged local shopping. He said: “We can now cautiously look forward to summer and the revival of the retail and hospitality sectors, which contribute so much to North Yorkshire’s economy.

“Let’s keep the good local shopping habits formed during the pandemic and support our reopening businesses as much as we can, while remembering how important it is still to ‘wash hands, make space and cover face’ when we are out and about.

How many car parks are there?

There are seven primary car parks at Meadowhall – six are colour-coded blue, green, orange, pink, red and yellow, and there is also a car park outside the Oasis dining quarter.

Are there car parking spaces for disabled people?

There are 350 disabled spaces available. Visitors should go to orange zone 1 for the disabled spaces closest to Shopmobility.

Motorcycles can be parked in the lower red, lower pink and yellow car parks, as well as the orange zone 4 car park.

Are there any parent and child spaces?

Meadowhall has more than 200 parent and child spaces – these can be found across the car parks, except in zones 3 and 4.

Do the car parks have height restrictions?

The height restrictions for vehicles are 2.1 metres or 6ft 10 inches across all of Meadowhall’s car parks with the exception of the orange zone car parks, where there is no height restriction.

Are there any rules and regulations covering the car parks?

Meadowhall’s car parks are monitored to ensure instructions are followed for disabled and parent and child spaces. Failure to comply with parking terms conditions may result in a parking charge notice being issued.

When do the car parks close?

The Oasis orange zone 3 and 4 car park is open for 24 hours. All other Meadowhall car parks close for entry and have lower lighting one hour after the centre stops trading for the day. Visitors can leave all car parks until after the last cinema showing.

Where can staff park their cars?

There is a dedicated car park for Meadowhall staff on Aisling Road.

Is anything different at the moment because of the pandemic?

Car parks at Meadowhall have been adapted or closed to help people adhere to social distancing guidelines. The blue car park, next to Debenhams, is closed, the lower levels of the red and yellow car parks are shut and the green car park is closed. All other car parks are open as usual.

About the Manager

Liz started out with Clinkard’s as manager of the Meadowhall store and has continued to do so for the last 15 years or more. During this time Liz also held the position of operations manager for nearly four years. Starting off her day, Liz checks in with her stock team to see what is on their agenda, then delegates any priorities. She then catches up with any other management in store regarding stock, staffing, sales and performance and opens the doors for the day. She makes it a priority to ensure targets are achieved in store, and to ensure every sale possible meets her high standard for customer service. Liz’s main focus is her customers- she loves meeting new people every day and also seeing her regulars. Beginning at K Shoes as a Saturday girl, Liz has also worked for Ravel as a store manager in various locations, before joining the Charles Clinkard team. Working for a company with such lovely people has kept Liz loyal to the company- she feels she is valued as a person rather than a number.

 

With family at the centre of her world, Liz has recently started skiing lessons (she has had to postpone them for a while though, as she broke her arm slipping on laminate floor while on a coffee break during a lesson!) Her favourite place ever visited is Barbados, a dreamy place where she once saw many baby turtles heading for the sea, rescuing one that was travelling the wrong direction. Her hero was her Grandad Rodgers, a ‘true gentleman’, and the most kind, loving and generous man she’s ever met – always putting others before himself.

 

Now a true shoe connoisseur, Liz‘s recommendation sold in store at present are Fly boots for casual wear and Gabor boots for work- she really values comfort. Her favourite shoe brand overall is Paul Smith, of which she treated herself to some of his swirl sandals and doesn’t know what she’ll do without them when they give up the ghost, as they go with absolutely everything! Upon winning the lottery, she would splurge on more sandals both comfortable and bright!

Sheffield’s Meadowhall shopping centre comes on the market at £1.4bn | Business

A majority stake in the Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield is for sale, at a price likely to value the whole mall at £1.4bn or more.

British Land, one of Britain’s biggest property developers, is looking to put half its 50% stake in the 1.4m sq ft mall up for sale, at the same time that its joint venture partner, London & Stamford, is putting its 50% stake in Meadowhall on the market. London & Stamford hopes to wrap up a sale in the first half of this year.

Big centres like Meadowhall are coveted assets as they rarely come on the market and perform far better than high-street properties. The sale is likely to generate a lot of interest from companies such as Capital Shopping Centres (CSC), Hammerson, and Australia’s Westfield, as well as sovereign wealth funds from Singapore, Canada, Norway and the Middle East.

The Government of Singapore Investment Corporation’s real estate arm bought a 40% stake in Britain’s biggest mall, MetroCentre in Gateshead, in 2007. CSC, which is the country’s top operator with 14 shopping centres including Manchester’s Trafford Centre, retained a 50% stake in MetroCentre and still manages it.

British Land’s chief executive, Chris Grigg, declined to comment, but has said that when disposing of a property the group would consider retaining a minority stake if the buyer were prepared to pay a better price on the remaining stake in return for having the comfort that the developer remained invested.

“It would allow them [British Land] to recycle capital into some of their other schemes,” Peel Hunt analyst James Carswell told Reuters. “It’s a good opportunity, as Meadowhall has performed well.”

Meadowhall was valued at £1.4bn in British Land’s annual results last May. It is the company’s third-biggest property after the Broadgate office complex, which has been pre-let to Swiss bank UBS, and Regent’s Place in London. The developer bought Meadowhall for £1.17bn in 1999 and sold a half share to London & Stamford for £588m in 2009.

Both British Land and London & Stamford declined to comment.

How To Get Around • The Sheffield Guide

Many changes are taking place across Sheffield in order to enable Social Distancing. With certain lockdown measures being lifted across the country, many shops, businesses and services are starting to reopen. Here’s a guide on new measures and how to get around.

Sheffield City Centre Social Distancing

Yellow paint lines mark out new ‘thoroughfares’ on some of Sheffield’s most popular streets. These indicate where you should walk in order to get from place to place. Notably, these markings are prominent throughout Fargate and The Moor.

Inside of the walkways (central areas) is for moving around. Conversely, the outsides of these lanes (nearest the buildings) is reserved for queuing.

Whilst in the central clearways pedestrians are asked to observe social distancing and keep two metres apart. You should also keep moving in these areas.

Retailers have worked with Sheffield City Council on plans for ensuring social distancing in and around shops and businesses.

Shops will operate strict capacities and distancing measures within the stores, including one-way systems. This means you may be required to queue outside until it is safe to get around the store.

“Ideally, the return to the city centre will be gradual. We need people to come back in a measured way. We urge people to plan their visit, check in advance that the stores they want to go to are open, and above all be patient and responsible.”Diane Jarvis, Sheffield BID Manager

If you’re asked to queue outside, stickers on the floor will mark out where you should stand. Each has been spaced out to ensure distancing can be maintained whilst waiting to get inside.

You’re asked to stand at the first available floor sticker. Move forward to the next sticker when that person has moved forward and it becomes free.

Hygiene, Hand Washing and Contactless payments

Shops and businesses have also introduced new hygiene measures. Hand sanitising stations may be set up at entrances and exits to buildings. Some businesses may require you sanitise and/or wear a mask before entering.

It is also advised to carry your own hand sanitiser and use it each time you enter and exit a new place.

Retailers will be regularly cleaning high-contact surfaces. You should keep contact with surfaces to a minimum and avoid touching any items you don’t intend to buy.

Many retailers will be operating ‘cashless’ and may only accept contactless payments.

Council workers will additionally be regularly cleaning public areas, including hand rails and benches. Hand sanitiser stations will be available across the city centre.

In the absence of many private facilities being available, temporary toilets have been installed in the Peace Gardens area. The Moor Market toilets will also be open and regularly maintained.

Closed roads, wider pavements and pedestrianised areas

A number of road closures have been put in place across Sheffield City Centre.

A section of Division Street is now closed to traffic (from the Frog and Parrot to Great Gatsby). Pinstone Street is closed to traffic from Surrey Street to Cross Burgess Street. Between Cross Burgess Street and Furnival Gate road traffic will be closed southbound (meaning no exit to Furnival Gate). Leopold Street is closed to traffic in the direction from Church Street towards the Town Hall. Bus stops here will be given over to pedestrians to help maintain social distancing. In the opposite direction, Barkers Pool to Church Street remains open. However, of course no U-turning will be allowed at the mini-roundabout to head back towards the Town Hall.

Other roads are affected throughout the City Centre. More information is available at the Sheffield City Council website.

Several bus routes moved

Many of the road closures affect public transport through Sheffield City Centre too. A number of Bus services are affected.

Buses that would normally stop at Pinstone Street will be redirected. Services entering the city centre from West Street are diverted down Carver Street to Charter Row, with new stops along that route.

Similarly, bus services usually coming to Pinstone Street via High Street/Church Street are diverted along Arundel Gate to Furnival Gate, with stops along that route.Bus Route changes in Sheffield City Centre

Meanwhile, face coverings must now be worn on public transport.

Sheffield City Centre car parking

Motorists should note a number of changes to car parking around the city centre. Sheffield City Council are currently advising travelling into the city by car or public transport as a last resort. Walking or cycling are preferred options.

Areas where pavements have been widened will be closed for traffic or parking. For example, much of Division Street will now have parking restrictions to give way to socially distancing pedestrians.

Avoid busy times

Sheffield City Council are advising people who need to travel through the city centre to do so at quieter times.

Therefore, the best times to get around are between 9am-11am and 3pm-5pm.

Meadowhall’s ‘keep left’ and traffic light system

Similarly, Meadowhall Shopping Centre are introducing a number of social distancing measures in the complex.

Firstly, Meadowhall will be enforcing two-metre social distancing throughout the centre. This means at busy times you may be asked to wait in designated areas outside.Meadowhall Lower Level Map including Social Distancing changes

Several car parks will be closed. Other car parks may also be temporarily closed at busier times.

Throughout the shopping centre, people are asked to ‘keep left’, with signs and floor stickers designating the direction of travel. Subsequently, designated ‘crossing points’ are signposted to indicate where you can change direction.

Shops will largely be operating on a similar basis to those in the city centre as above. However, most stores are trialling a new red and green traffic light system. Sign boards outside the shop will indicate whether or not you can currently enter: green for yes, red for no.

If a store can’t currently accommodate more people you are asked to continue moving and to return to the shop later. No queuing is allowed.

Food & Drink

Food and drink operators are still restricted from allowing people to stay and consume on the premises.

However, many are reopening to operate a take-away service. Again, social distancing should be maintained whilst ordering and waiting.

In Meadowhall, the Oasis seated dining area remains closed. Whilst food is available at several outlets, no food or drink is to be consumed within the centre.

Common sense

In short, a common sense approach is required when getting around Sheffield during these times. Should you be feeling unwell, advice remains to stay home and self-isolate.

If everyone tries to maintain social distancing of two metres the city will be a safer place for all. At times you may need a little more time or patience as everyone adapts to these new measures.
