I’ve tried for years to find a Breakfast at Tiffany’s bridal shower to feature on this blog and I have never seen one that I like. If you have a good one, send it to me, please. I think the problem I have with this theme is that as much as I love Audrey Hepburn, when you turn

Breakfast at TIffany’s into a party theme, it’s way more about the Tiffany boxes than any other element of the movie. Holly was a party girl! She had a bathtub couch for god’s sake! I’ve also yet to see Cat make an appearance. And a shower theme that is basically “expensive jewelry” just really isn’t that fun. You know what would make really fun bridal shower themes? These movies.

Marie Antoinette

Soooo many possibilities. For wardrobe and food. And wigs. Please let there be wigs. Key to this theme is adopting Kristen Dunst’s absolute “don’t give a shit” attitude. You want elegance, but you also want ease, so bring the dining table outside, keep it relaxed but luxurious, go shoeless in your corseted gown…you get the idea.

The Notebook

This is like the romantic movie of the last decade. This party absolutely must occur by a lake. It should include headscarves and high-waisted bikinis. Maybe a canoe and some ducks. Obviously you gift all your guests a notebook. And since the movie is really about memory, ask each guest to share their favorite memory with the bride. Then dig in to a Southern crab boil on a picnic table by the shore.

Romeo + Juliet

Baz Luhrmann’s take on Romeo and Juliet is just begging to be transformed into a party theme. Juliet’s look for the costume ball is basically your bride’s attire right there.

Dirty Dancing

Reportedly, this was the theme of Kate Middleton’s bachelorette—woman has good taste. If you can host the party at place that resembles the Catskills lakeside resort, great! Consider dividing the guests into the country club crowd (pastels, polos, visors) and the hip young staff (cutoffs, crop tops, frayed jeans) for a fun mix of outfits. Dance lessons might be a fun addition to this party. On just blast the amazing movie soundtrack the whole time. Non-negotiable: Have the time of your life.

Clueless

I went back and forth on whether I should recommend Clueless or Heathers. Heathers has so many wardrobe possibilities—you could assign each guest a color! But ultimately Clueless is just more fun. Make sure to take lots of Polaroids.

Mean Girls

What Clueless was to the 90s, Mean Girls is to the 2000s. Obviously you will wear pink, even if it is not a Wednesday. Unless you come as a mouse. Also acceptable. Get yourself a “That’s So Fetch” banner and gift these Mean Girls party favors. Just don’t sever Kalteen bars…

Roman Holiday

If Audrey Hepburn is a non-negotiable, why not choose one of her other movies for inspiration? We love Roman Holiday for a fun twist. Serve gelato and Italian food 

al fresco. If there is a Vespa to be had, all the better. Make sure to tie a scarf around your neck.

Pride & Prejudice

Whether you prefer your Darcy in Colin Firth or Matthew Macfadyen form (I’m sorry, but is there really a contest), Price & Prejudice makes for a fun shower theme. Break out the croquet set and throw a garden party. There are many great quotes to choose from, but we love “Completely & Perfectly & Incandescently Happy”.

27 Dresses

You know how you’re always complaining that you’ll never wear your bridesmaid dresses again? Solve that problem for your guests. Ask everyone to wear an old bridesmaid dress, prom dress or just the most out-of-style dress in their closet. If you’ve been asked to be a maid of honor (or matron of honor), first of all, congrats! This is a big honor, and can be fun and exciting. Just in case you aren’t clear on the definition, the maid of honor is defined as the bride’s right hand woman throughout her engagement and wedding day, leading the rest of the bridesmaids in their own duties. The bride will typically tap her BFF, sibling or other close friend to serve in this important role, because of the wide range of hats a maid of honor will have to wear: confidant, assistant, voice of reason, shoulder to cry on, if needed, as well as bridesmaid leader (and sometimes wrangler). As such, there are a slew of maid of honor duties and responsibilities that fall under the MOH’s purview. 

So what does a maid of honor do, exactly? Maid of honor duties include planning the bachelorette party, making sure the bridesmaids dresses are ordered in a timely fashion, serving as the point person on the wedding day, giving a speech at the reception, being a model wedding guest (RSVP-ing on time, reserving travel and hotel with the room block early) and so, so much more. Other brides may want to handle the bulk of pre-wedding responsibilities themselves—or hire a wedding planner who will take care of most of it for them. Whatever the case, the main maid of honor responsibility is to be there to assist the bride with any tasks she needs help with — or simply be there to listen to ideas, and provide suggestions and advice.

2. Attend wedding dress shopping and fittings

The bride may or may not ask the maid of honor to accompany her wedding dress shopping and to her dress fittings, but many brides do like to have the maid of honor present for this outing.

3. Lead the bridal party

2. Serve as messenger between the couple

If the almost-married couple is exchanging love notes or gifts the morning of the wedding, a maid of honor responsibility could be to serve as the go-between, along with the best man. The maid of honor visits the bride’s future spouse, and hands over the note and/or gift—and of course, reports back on the reaction!

3. Prepare and bring an emergency kit for the bride

There are lots of mini-emergencies that can occur before the wedding, and it’s important to be prepared! The maid of honor should create a wedding-day emergency kit filled with items that may come in handy—from safety pins to fashion tape, bandaids to pain relievers.

4. Have all vendors’ contact information nearby

The bride’s goal should be to relax and enjoy the morning of her wedding—not stress over last-minute details! The maid of honor can help communicate with wedding vendors if need be, though wedding planner or venue coordinator is usually on top of wedding-related issues as well.

5. Keep the bride calm

If bride starts to seem a bit stressed, it’s one of the maid of honor duties to keep the mood light. Play music, tell a funny story, watch silly cat videos, whatever it takes to keep the crew happy and laughing!

6. Help keep things on schedule

The maid of honor should make sure the bride or wedding planner provides you with a full wedding timeline and keep your eye on the clock! If the bridesmaids are focusing more on chatting than getting ready (especially if they’ve had some champagne or other drinks throughout the day!), gently remind them that the limo will be leaving for the ceremony in ten minutes. Try to make sure that everyone is where they need to be on time.

1. Walk down the aisle

It’s time for the maid of honor’s big moment in the spotlight! You’ll likely walk down the aisle after all of the bridesmaids, and before the flower girl and ring bearer, and bride.

2. Arrange the bride’s train and veil upon her arrival to the altar

Once the bride arrives to the altar, make sure that her dress and veil look great and make any needed adjustments before the ceremony begins.

3. Hold the bride’s bouquet

The maid of honor should be responsible for holding both her own and the bride’s bouquets during the ceremony—particularly during the exchange of the rings. The bridal bouquet can be pretty heavy, so enlist a fellow bridesmaid if you need to take a break from holding the bouquet during the ceremony.

4. Hold the groom’s ring

In an opposite-sex wedding, if there is no ring bearer, the best man will hold the bride’s wedding band, and the maid of honor holds the groom’s band until the rings are exchanged.

5. Sign the marriage license as witness

Right after the ceremony, the officiant and the newlyweds will sign the marriage license. Two witnesses are also required, and usually the maid of honor and best man take on the role of witness as well.

1. Stand next to the groom in the receiving line (optional)

Many couples choose not to have receiving lines these days, but if there is one, the maid of honor stands next to the groom and greets guests as they enter the reception.

2. Enter the reception with the best man

If the emcee is introducing the wedding party members as they enter the reception, the maid of honor usually enters with the best man. Whether or not you choose to do a silly dance as you enter is your call!

3. Help bustle the bride’s train—and use the restroom!

Before the wedding, it’s a good idea to learn how to bustle the bride’s gown—her bridal salon or seamstress can give a quick tutorial if you’re able to attend a dress fitting. Bustling the bride’s gown will help keep her dress’ train clean and make her dress more comfortable to dance in.

If the bride’s gown is particularly cumbersome, you might be enlisted to help the bride use the restroom. That’s what friends (and maids of honor) are for, right?

4. Play host

As before the wedding, guests will likely have questions during the event. Where’s the guest book? When’s the cake cutting? Where do I sit? Where can I put my gift? Part of the maid of honor’s role is to help answer questions and direct guests. And while guests are supposed to give their gifts directly to the newlyweds or place them on the gift table, you may be entrusted with a gift or two. Make sure any gifts are properly placed in a safe location.

5. Dance with the best man

One of the most important maid of honor duties is to have a great time and spend a lot of time on the dance floor. To help kick things off, the maid of honor traditionally dances with the best man for the song immediately following the first dance. If this seems a bit too formal or isn’t your style, no worries! Just be sure to be one of the first people on the dance floor, and encourage others to dance too!

6. Make sure the bride stays stress-free

If any mini-crises occur during the reception, don’t let on to the bride and groom. They should focus on enjoying the reception, not that the bride’s cousin got sick in the bathroom or the cake almost toppled over.

7. Give a toast after the best man

The maid of honor usually gives a speech after the best man. The maid of honor speech is usually relatively short, relaying about the bride, and her love and respect for the couple. As long as the speech comes from the heart, it’s sure to be a hit.

8. Make sure the bride eats and drinks

The last thing anyone wants to encounter is a hangry bride. Make sure that the bride eats and be sure to refresh her water glass throughout the night to keep her hydrated.

9. Collect wedding gifts if necessary

Before the wedding, find out where the couple would like their gifts to be transported after the reception. Ensure that the couple’s gifts end up in the right hands and in the correct location when the reception is over.

10. Tie up any other loose ends

From making sure the bride’s wedding gown is properly stored to ensuring that the top tier of the wedding cake ends up in a freezer, talk to the couple about any end-of-the-night duties they’d like the maid of honor to help complete.

11. Help the couple during and post-honeymoon

As the couple heads off on their honeymoon, see if there are any ways you can assist them—particularly if you live nearby. Perhaps you can check in on their house once in a while, dog sit, or bring over groceries before they head home. Astros vs. Braves. Ouch. It’s hard to cheer for anyone in this World Series

The typical sports script usually involves a hero and a villain, or at least a David vs. Goliath.

This year’s World Series just happens to pit one bad guy against another.

The Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves will set foot on Major League Baseball’s biggest stage for Game 1 on Tuesday night at Minute Maid Park. Unfortunately, neither one appears all that deserving of the honour.

The Astros are proven cheaters. Maybe not this version of the Astros, but the one from a few years ago certainly was, and that stank has yet to dissipate. They made a mockery of the game with the 2017 sign-stealing scandal that involved a centre-field camera, a direct feed and a garbage can. Somehow the system was elaborate and rudimentary all at once.

Similar claims were made about 2018, and the allegations haven’t completely disappeared even to this day. Earlier this month, former Blue Jays reliever Ryan Tepera of the Chicago White Sox made similar accusations during the AL Division Series by pointing out how much better the Astros’ swings were at home vs. on the road. In his words, there was a lot of “sketchy stuff” going on and everyone knew exactly what he meant.

Whether that’s true or not is impossible for anyone on the outside to say, but the 2017 complaints were confirmed by an MLB investigation. General manager Jeff Luhnow and manager A.J. Hinch were banned for an entire year while former bench coach, and current Red Sox manager, Alex Cora temporarily lost his job. It ranks right up there with the 1919 Black Sox, Pete Rose’s betting saga and the steroid era as the biggest scandals in the sport’s history.

The players got a free pass on just about everything after they were granted immunity by the commissioner’s office in exchange for truthful testimony. Former Astro Carlos Beltran had to resign just weeks after being hired as manager of the New York Mets, but all active players got through this mess unscathed, even though they were just as guilty and complicit as anyone else.

A lot of players from that 2017 team remain there today. George Springer, Gerrit Cole and Josh Reddick escaped the spotlight by signing elsewhere — which doesn’t make them any less guilty — but José Altuve, Alex Bregman, Carlos Correa and Yuli Gurriel still put on the same uniform. They’re seeking redemption, trying to prove they’re good enough to win without cheating. For some of us at home, they just seem like criminals who were given a “get out of jail free” card.

The Astros’ villainous ways also run deeper and more sinister than stealing signs. Let’s not forget this is the team that traded for closer Roberto Osuna while he was still facing charges for alleged domestic assault. It’s the club that employed and tried to cover for Brandon Taubman, the former assistant GM who openly taunted a group of female reporters with a misogynistic rant and later denied it ever happened.

The Braves aren’t exactly saints here, either.

The tomahawk chop chant will be all over your television screens this week with crowds perpetuating the worst forms of cultural appropriation. This act seemed tired enough when the Jays made a mockery of it in the 1992 World Series. Now after all the progress we’ve supposedly made as a society, it can only be considered straight-up racist.

Adding to the embarrassment, for Game 6 of the NL Championship Series the Braves asked outspoken anti-vaxxer Travis Tritt to sing the national anthem. MLB pulled its all-star game out of the state this year because of new restrictive voting laws that had a negative impact on people of colour. A few months ago, Braves star outfielder Marcell Ozuna was arrested on charges of strangulation and battery involving his wife. The list of wrongdoings goes on and on.

Canadians tuning in to the World Series will have to pick the lesser of two evils, and it’s not difficult to figure out which one the majority will side with.

The Braves are a former rival of the Jays, and they might stand for some truly vile things, but they’ve got some people we like to call our own as well.

Around these parts, most of the focus likely will be on Alex Anthopoulos, the Braves GM and former architect of the Jays, who also happens to be from Montreal. Anthopoulos assembled a post-season team each of the last four years, and once before with the Jays, but this marks the first time he has advanced to the Series as a GM.

Then there’s first baseman Freddie Freeman, who was born in California but has dual citizenship thanks to his Canadian parents. He played for Canada at the World Baseball Classic to honour his mother after she passed away from skin cancer, and remains one of the most likeable guys in the sport with one of its sweetest swings.

There would be even more Canadian content on this Braves team if it wasn’t for right-hander Mike Soroka being out the entire year with a torn Achilles. Soroka was Atlanta’s best pitcher in 2019 and its opening day starter a year ago, but hasn’t been available since last August following the devastating injury.

The Astros will be trying to win their second World Series over the last five seasons, in what will likely be Correa’s final year with the team. The underdog Braves, who were two games under .500 at the trade deadline, are somewhere they haven’t been in 22 seasons.

The games should be great. A lot of the narratives surrounding them, not so much.

This might be one World Series where you shouldn’t be rooting too hard for either side.

Maid of Honour Duties Step by Step

The role of the Maid of Honour (called Matron of Honour if she is married) is similar to that of the best man, with the difference being that her duties are related to the bride.

Like the bestman, the Maid of Honour is usually the closest friend to or relative of the bride. She may also be her sister. The closer to the bride she is, the better, as the two will understand each other better.

The Maid of Honour’s main role is to help the bride in planning her wedding and being the bride’s “consultant”. She must assist the bride constantly throughout the entire planning process, especially during the stressful times close to the wedding day, when the tasks start to breed uncontrollably! She must also work hand-in-hand with the bestman.
