Staying in Sentosa – Tips & Advice

  • Where to Stay in Singapore – a guide
  • Public buses and trains on the island are free, but there is an entry fee for the island when coming from mainland Singapore. The fee is $4 if entering via monorail or $5-7 per car or taxi, depending on the date and time. If entering via cable car (the most fun way!), the entry fee is included in the ticket price. If staying at a hotel in Sentosa, there is no cost for entry. Just show the hotel booking confirmation for the first entry; the hotel will then give you a pass to cover all entries for the duration of your stay.
  • Sentosa Island is known as Singapore’s Playground. Despite the carefree nickname, Sentosa still has the same uptight rules as mainland Singapore. Stiff fines are enforced for infractions that include chewing gum, jaywalking, and spitting.
  • When exploring the mainland, use public transportation. It is the most cost-efficient, user-friendly, and punctual system in the world.

Top 10 Sentosa Hotels: Staying At Singapore’s Island Resort

Sentosa is a small island in the southern part of the coast of Singapore. The island was previously known as ‘Pulau Belakang Mati’, which means ‘The Island After Death’ in Malay. Considered as a strategic location, four defensive forts were built on the island in the 1880’s by the British forces: Fort Siloso, Serapong, Imbiah, and Connaught. Fort Siloso later became a prisoner-of-war camp when Singapore fell to the Japanese from 1942 until 1945 when Singapore was returned to British colonial rule. The island’s name was changed to Sentosa resulting from a naming contest in 1970. Sentosa is derived from the Malay word ‘Santosha’, which means peace and contentment. Fast-forward to today, Sentosa is a popular destination for locals and foreigners who visit the island for both business and leisure. Singapore
, Beach, City

Style
Boutique, Colonial, Resort

Interests
Weddings, business, Families , Honeymoon, Sightseeing, Relaxing, Art/Culture, Swimming, Cooking Classes

Capella blends old-world colonial charm with contemporary chic, all with the turquoise backdrop of the South China Sea. Then there are the grounds : 30 acres of lush lawns dotted with noble trees, roaming peacocks and artfully appointed sculptures, just steps from a friendly beach.

Designed by Sir Norman Foster its new architecture fuses gracefully with the 1880s main building, a former restored colonial mansion with modern-tropical interiors by whiz Jaya Ibrahim, tasteful and minimal, with a neutral colour palette and a nice use of natural materials, namely wood and marble.
The outdoor dining terraces look out over the bi-level infinity pools, which seem to slip into the South China Sea.

Royalty and celebrities come for the selection of excellent restaurants: The Knolls for international and Singaporean cuisine, Cassia for modern Chinese, Bob’s bar for sunset drinks, and The Library for tea served in Wedgewood china.

Sentosa Island is connected to the rest of Singapore by a road bridge

The original name of the island was Pulau Belakang Mati, which literally translates from Malay as “the island of the dead” or “the island of death”. This ominous name was associated with the legends of piracy and bloodshed that flourished on this island in the past. But in 1972, when a long-term plan for the development of the island territory was adopted, the Singapore Tourism Board announced a competition and gave the island a new name – Sentosa, which means “peace and tranquility” in Malay. And among the Singaporeans themselves today there is a joke that SENTOSA stands for So Expensive and Nothing to See Also – “so expensive, but there is nothing to see.”

Sentosa Island has an area of almost 5 km², it is located half a kilometer from the southern coast of the main island of Singapore. It is the fourth largest island in the country (excluding the main island). 70% of the island’s territory is covered with secondary tropical forest, habitat for monitor lizards, monkeys, peacocks, parrots, and other representatives of the local fauna. And all the construction of numerous structures on the island is always carried out with minimal impact on the environment, so as not to change the ecology and landscape of this place.

The current Sentosa Island is the best place in Singapore to experience the bright and thrill, or, conversely, to relax and unwind as much as possible. There is everything you need for this – fresh sea air, lush tropical vegetation, excellent resort infrastructure, as well as a large number of attractions and entertainment.Whether you are a nature lover, history buff or adventure seeker, you are sure to satisfy your passion on this island.

And in the evenings, this area becomes a venue for fun discos and parties. And at the heart of the complex are the magnificently restored colonial buildings built by the British military back in the 1880s. On the territory of the hotel, which is also a tropical park, there are three unusually beautiful swimming pools.Capella Singapore also claims that the food of their restaurants is unmatched in all of Singapore. 90 000 The cheapest and best hotels in Singapore: prices, photos, reviews

Friends.Hello everyone! In this post, I want to help you choose hotels in Singapore, as well as consider other accommodation options. But before that, the soul demands to complain. I am sad! I missed the “article in three days” schedule. The keyboard has broken, now the symbols “i”, “h” and “s” are not easy to get 🙁. The letters are not the most important thing yet! These buttons perform the basic functions “ctrl + z”, “ctrl + x” and “ctrl + c”! We ordered a “clava” from Russia, we are waiting … In connection with this circumstance, we decided to extend the visa and stay in Thailand until the end of November.Well, good, because. this country has a huge number of beautiful places that are worth visiting! Here are just articles so far to write – continuous frustration 🙁.

The best hotels in Singapore – our TOP-5: prices and photos

Here are the best hotels in Singapore with photos, which, in addition to their stars, high ratings and cost, have some other feature that is unique to this resort.

I’ll start with the famous hotel in Singapore Marina Bay Sands (by the way, I told you in detail about how we ended up on the roof with the pool here). The Marina Bay Sands hotel is popular precisely because of the shape of the roof in the form of a ship, on which the pool is located. From this pool, breathtaking photographs are obtained as the water merges with the sky. From here, a gorgeous view of the city opens: the Marina Bay promenade, the Singapore Strait, tall skyscrapers, a Ferris wheel and Singapore Gardens by the Bay. Prices start at $ ,300 US $ .

Hotel Raffles is famous … oh, what is it not famous for! 🙂 All in all, this is a very old colonial style inn dating back to 1887.From the very foundation of the hotel, celebrities and dignitaries have stayed here. A museum has been created on the territory of the Raffles hotel, admission is free. Another feature that not only the Raffles Hotel is famous for, but the whole of Singapore is the Singapore Sling cocktail, which was invented and created in the long bar of this famous hotel! The minimum price for a room is $ ,500.

Resorts World Sentosa – Beach Villas – the most expensive hotel, or rather the most expensive villa-hotels in Singapore! Actually, the price is famous 🙂.The villas are located in a resort area on Sentosa Island. The cheapest one-bedroom villa for two will cost at least $ ,800 $ .

Parkroyal on Pickering – This five-star hotel is famous for its hanging gardens. In general, a green hotel with lush vegetation on the balconies. Looks very pretty 🙂. Prices for this Singapore hotel start at US $ 260 .

Parkroyal on Pickering Hotel Hanging Gardens Parkroyal on Pickering

Pan Pacific Singapore stands out among other hotels in Singapore with capsule lifts located outside the hotel building, which offer gorgeous views of the city.Prices for this Singapore hotel start at $ 340 US $ .

Of course, these are not all of the best five-star hotels in Singapore. There are more expensive and loyal reviews. Here is our TOP-5 in terms of the presence of its distinctive “chips”. On the map you can see prices for hotels in Singapore and choose a hotel by location:

Cheap and Cheap Singapore Hotels

The cheapest prices for hotels in Singapore are in capsule hotels or in regular hostels. So, a bed in a dormitory will cost from 10 $ and further upwards. Capsule hotels are inexpensive hotels in Singapore, the common rooms of which are divided into cells (“capsules”), like a honeycomb (not to be compared with the trendy capsule hotels in Japan 🙂). A cell with a kingsize bed for two in a dormitory room of such a hotel will cost from 20 $ .

Our capsule hotel

So, we spent the night in Singapore in a 20-bed capsule hotel ABC Hostel (Hamilton) at a price of 33 $ .There is an equipped kitchen, tea, coffee – unlimited. Toilets and showers are equipped with hygiene products. In the recreation area there is a TV set and two computers with Internet access. The rooms have air conditioning, wi-fi. In the cells there are sockets and lamps, towels and bedspreads are given out. Things are stored in boxes downstairs, they are not locked – the staff claims that they do not steal here 🙂.

Apartments and rooms for private individuals

A good way to choose inexpensive and comfortable accommodation in Singapore is to rent a room or apartment from a private person.More often than not, at the same cost as hotels, you can significantly benefit from the quality of accommodation. The popular worldwide service airbnb.com will help you rent a house in Singapore from a private owner. By the way, if you register now, you will instantly receive a bonus – a discount on your first booking in the amount equivalent to $ 20 $ . In my opinion, very good! 🙂 If you have never encountered the capabilities of this site, then I recommend reading my article – a review about airbnb.com.

Rooms in Singapore on airbnb cost from 16 $ , apartments – from 40 $ .Unfortunately, when we were in Singapore in 2014, there was almost no choice of accommodation on the airbnb. But now, in 2016, more than 300 options have been proposed.

Free housing in Singapore

There are several options for free overnight stays in Singapore.

  • The first and the most popular way is to use couchsurfing services. Who does not know what this “couchsurfing” is, I explain – this is a community of people who are ready to host travelers absolutely free of charge. The main goal is communication. But in fact, sometimes the guests don’t even see the host. A big plus is that they can take you on an excursion, and they can also feed you! 🙂
  • The second , not the most comfortable, but economical – overnight in a tent in the parks of Singapore. I think if you have a tent at hand, then you are already used to it 🙂. By the way, there are equipped toilets and showers on the beaches of Sentosa Island, so you can spend the night in a tent all the time. Alternatively, for a small fee (they say, about 3 sing.$) you can ask for a shower in a simple hostel.
  • The third , the most extreme one, is an overnight stay on the street. Although there are already known places here. For example, the roof of the Marina Bay Sands mall. If it rains, you can go to the hall. By the way, people there also managed to sleep on armchairs. It’s a strange thing, the pavilions do not work, but walk in the halls, at least take a walk. The same goes for toilets 😉. And on the street near the Museum of Art, you can find sockets and catch public Wi-Fi. You can read about how we spent the night on the roof of the mall here.

The best hotels in Singapore: the lyrics of comfort

The best hotels in Singapore are not only hotels belonging to international corporations Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott and others. There are also many local excellent hotels with the highest level of service.

The best hotels in Singapore will delight you with the level of service and comfort

Among the many different hotels that welcome everyone who comes to the city every day, there are the best hotels in Singapore .They were recognized as such by international experts in the field of the hotel business, and those who stayed in them and used the services of their staff.

But among the best hotels in Singapore, you can choose the most suitable one. So, if you are interested in shopping, then the ideal option for you would be to settle in the Orchard Road area, for example, in the Regent Hotel, which invariably amazes all guests with a 12-storey atrium, through which live butterflies fly. If you come for leisurely walks and visits to museums, theater and other attractions, then the Raffles Hotel will be the best choice. It is one of the oldest (built in 1887) and is considered a classic example in everything from architecture and furnishings in rooms to service. By the way, if new hotels in Singapore do not inspire you, and the classic style is an invariable part of your life, pay attention to the respectable Fullerton, built in 1928 and famous for the fact that it housed the offices of the postal service until 2000.

For fans of nightlife and noisy active entertainment, the new hotels in Singapore, located on Sentosa Island, are most suitable. The Sentosa Resort & Spa belongs to the Spa series and provides, in addition to the standard set of services, a huge number of cosmetic, medical and wellness programs. Well, if you are used to always being surrounded by art objects and appreciate a special style, then you will definitely like Michael on Sentosa – a relatively new hotel in Singapore.

Naturally, all the best hotels in the city are distinguished by an excellent level of service, comfort of rooms and safety. Time does not stand still here, and perhaps tomorrow there will be a new hotel in Singapore , which will outshine all its predecessors in terms of comfort and service.

90,000 things to see and do, entertainment, beaches, hotels and prices Olgatravel.com

I’m talking about Sentosa Island in Singapore: how to get to Sentosa, how to travel around the island, what entertainment and attractions are on Sentosa and their prices, what see what to know about beaches and hotels, our review and recommendations.

Sentosa – an island of entertainment in Singapore

Sentosa Island

Sentosa Island – a small tropical island in the Indian Ocean, belongs to Singapore. Not so long ago, the island was covered with tropical forests and monkeys and exotic birds roamed freely here 🙂 In fact, even now you can meet wild monkeys here (we have not seen), but peacocks walking freely along the beach were met 🙂

Peacocks roam freely around the island

The island’s tourist infrastructure began to develop rapidly in the 70s of the last century, when the Singapore government decided to make the island a popular tourist resort for locals and tourists.By the way, the island received its current name “Sentosa”, which means “Peace and tranquility” only in 1972.

Various attractions and entertainment began to open on the island, and to get to Sentosa, a cable car, a monorail were built, and in 1992 the island was connected by a dam bridge with the mainland.

In 2006, part of the island was bought by Resorts World and in 2007 large-scale construction of the Resorts World Sentosa complex began on Sentosa. This resort complex includes the Universal Studio amusement park, a water park, the world’s largest oceanarium, luxury five-star hotels, casinos, restaurants.

Signs on the island

Construction lasted for three years and in 2010 a huge amusement park Universal Studios Singapore, several hotels, casinos and new shows were opened on Sentosa. More tourists are visiting Sentosa!

I must say that with the opening of new attractions and entertainment, old attractions began to close. For example, as it turned out, the Underwater World aquarium, which was located in the western part of the island, has not been operating since the summer of 2016 (and I, frankly, did not know that it was already closed on Google maps!), And instead tourists visit the SEA Aquarium. An artificial volcano, a musical fountain, a dragon statue spewing a stream of water were also demolished, and a monorail road around the island was dismantled.

Sentosa Beaches

Sentosa is not just an island, but a tropical island and even in the ocean, so many people think that Sentosa is a kind of beach paradise. In fact, this is not entirely true, or rather not at all 🙂

Yes, on the southern coast of Sentosa there are beaches and even as many as three that stretch for 2 km:

  • Palawan Beach
  • Siloso Beach )
  • Tanjong Beach

These beaches are artificially poured, sand for them was brought from the islands of Malaysia and Indonesia.Sentosa beaches are well equipped with lifeguards, awnings, very clean complimentary toilets and showers, lockers, cafes and beach clubs.

BUT: you have to understand that Singapore is a port city and the sea next to it is not very clean, there are huge ships in the roadstead nearby. Frankly, I would not go swimming in the sea in Singapore, especially after the paradise beaches somewhere on the islands of Thailand 🙂 Although people swim …

In my opinion, the sea in Singapore can be compared to the sea in Istanbul: there seems to be a sea and beaches, but swim does not pull. Therefore, I cannot say that the beaches of Sentosa are a great place for a beach holiday.

Opposite Palawan beach in the center of the coastline of Sentosa island there is a small island, on which the southernmost point of mainland Asia is located 🙂 A funny swinging bridge leads to the island, built on the coast an observation tower that you can climb.

Restaurants, cafes, food courts

Where to eat in Sentosa?

If you are not limited in funds, then where to have lunch or dinner on Sentosa you will find without problems, there are restaurants on the coast, and at hotels, and in the center of the island near Universal Park.

Food courts, at least large, I have not seen on Sentosa. The nearest large and inexpensive food court on the mainland is in the VivoCity shopping center (by the way, I advise you to visit, there are so many delicious things!).

On the island there is Starbucks, KFC, McDonald’s, the famous Hard Rock cafe, a Chinese dim sum Din Tai Fung, where we had dinner. By the way, prices for food on Sentosa are slightly higher than in the center of Singapore.

Sentosa: review, conclusions, recommendations

Sentosa Island in truth a real amusement park where everyone will find what to do and what to see.If you arrived in Singapore for 3-4 days (as we did in order to invest in visa-free transit conditions), then I advise you to take the time and visit Sentosa Island.

How long does it take for Sentosa? It’s hard to say, we were on the island all day and had almost no time … But I’ll say this, I don’t like running headlong and sticking my tongue out 🙂 just to see everything, I’d rather look less, but at a calm pace.

Our day in Sentosa

We left our hotel at about 9 am, took the subway at the nearest Clarke Quay station and took a straight purple line to HarbourFront station. There they went through the VivoCity shopping center (I noticed many interesting shops with dresses, where I really wanted to go, but they were all still closed) and, following the signs, went out into the street to the footpath to Sentosa.

A leisurely walk, a few photos and now we come to the Sentosa island, which at this time is just starting to wake up 🙂 As I wrote above, almost all the attractions and entertainment of the island begin to work from 9: 30-10: 00 am.

But near the entrance to Universal Park there is a huge queue both at the ticket office and at the entrance, it’s good that tickets to the park were bought and printed from us: there is a smaller queue for holders of electronic tickets 🙂

Near the entrance to the popular Universal Studios amusement park in Sentosa. It is always crowded here

In the park, we stepped a little and the first thing we did was go to the wrong rides, and because of this, in the afternoon we got on the queue for the most interesting rides (but I will write about the park itself in another article). We spent more than seven hours at Universal Studios and only at half past six in the evening we went to Sentosa!

We had very little time before sunset and we ran along the Festive Walk to Merlion and further to the beach station, so that we could sit on the Beach Tram and get to Palawan beach.I really wanted to check in at the southernmost point of mainland Asia 🙂

Festive Walk is an alley with shops and cafes. Nearby are several interesting fountains On Sentosa Island We run past the Merlion

Back to the center of the island, we returned on the monorail (we had no energy to walk), watched the Crane Show (Dance of the Cranes), dined in a cafe and left the island at half past nine in the evening.

A gorgeous sunset and a view from the island to Singapore. They say that in Singapore sunsets are rare … Here is such a beautiful evening turned out on Sentosa On the embankment in anticipation of the show of Cranes (Dance of the Cranes) On the embankment in anticipation of the show of Cranes (Dance of the Cranes) And here is the show itself Very beautiful, be sure to stay on Sentosa until the evening and wait for the show !

In total, we spent 12 hours on Sentosa and had almost no time! I had planned that we would stay at Universal until 2-3 days, have lunch, and then we will have time not only to run to the beach, but also to ride some of the Sentosa rides, or at least climb the observation tower.

Sentosa Island. Video

How much time to spend on Sentosa Island is up to you, for me it would be ideal to allocate two days for it and preferably spend the night in one of the chic hotels in Sentosa 🙂 For example:

Day 1: Universal Studios, late lunch, beach, show Wings of Time, in the evening Hard Rock Cafe and delicious majito 🙂

Day 2: SEA Aquarium, Merlion, Skyline Luge Sentosa + maybe something else + Crane Dance evening show.

If you run fast are not as slow as we 🙂, then in one day you can catch Universal Studios (buy express pass) + 2-3 attractions.

As I said, all the entertainment on Sentosa is not cheap at all, and the question arises, is it worth visiting the island for a budget tourist? In my opinion, yes, it is worth it! You can walk around the island completely free of charge, visit the beaches, the southernmost point of Asia, and watch the evening show on the waterfront for free.
