  3. 10 Things You Should Know about Lush Packaging

We’re serious about reducing our impact on the earth, so we’re always looking at our packaging and processes to see how we can improve. From 100% post-consumer plastic in our bottles and pots to biodegradable packing peanuts, here are 10 things you might not know about our packaging.

1. Naked: Out of our all-year-round product range, 65% are sold naked, with no packaging, so zero-waste washing is absolutely possible.

2. Post-consumer plastic: Our products in pots and bottles are sold in 100% post-consumer plastic. Our plastic bottles can be recycled through your city’s recycling program, but save and return your black and clear pots to your local Lush store for…

3. Free face masks! Did you know you can return five clean black and clear pots to any Lush store in exchange for a free fresh face mask? We chip them down and remold them into new pots in a closed recycling loop.

4. Continuous improvements: In 2012, we made our clear bottles thinner by 10% to reduce our plastic usage. In 2016 alone, this saved almost 13,500 pounds of plastic!

Intergalactic Bath Bomb wrapped up in our plastic-free, industrially-compostable bag

5. Knot-wraps: In 2010, we phased out our giftwrapping service and introduced knot-wraps. These square scarves are made of organic cotton or a silky fabric made from recycled plastic bottles, and are a great green alternative to wrapping paper. (They make really cute accessories, too!)

6. Recyclable or reusable: Lush gifts come in fabric knot-wraps, recyclable cardboard boxes or reusable metal tins: no matter which one you receive, its packaging is recyclable or reusable. Our online orders are also packed in 100% recycled (and recyclable) cardboard boxes.

7. Our packing peanuts: We use plant-based packing peanuts to protect the products in our gifts and online orders. Unlike Styrofoam, these are 100% biodegradable: to dispose of them, just toss them in your compost.

8. Nope, that’s not plastic: Naked products in our gifts and online orders sent out from our Vancouver facility come in bags that look like plastic, but are made of 100% biodegradable cellophane. These bags allow naked products to arrive in the same beautiful condition as when they were made. We’re working to transition all our naked products that are wrapped in our Toronto facility to the same 100% industrially-compostable cellulose.

9. Forgot your bag? No worries! Our paper bags are made from 100% recycled paper or choose one of our 100% organic cotton canvas bags to carry your Lush goodies home, and reuse it again and again.

10. Our gift tags and inserts: Even the tags and inserts in our gifts, which have information about all of our products inside, are printed on 100% recycled paper.

Big Bottle of Calm Reusable Bubble Bar

“My absolute favourite LUSH bubble bar. If you are looking for something to help you relax then this is for you. Beautiful scents, gorgeous deep purple colours and bubbles galore! Lasts forever and worth every penny.” -j4yde18_6747961

“This has a very strong lavender smell combined it with the sleepy shower gel you will get even the biggest of babies to sleep well that night.” -Alanphipps2

“Really pleased with this. Have already run a few baths for my daughter with this bar and we clearly have over half of it left. So it is certainly more economical than the bath bombs. Purple, lavender bubbles. Lovely! Planning to give as presents for family too. Have a box ready to keep it in. Hold it by the black lid and let the hot water pour through the lower part of the bottle. Then pop it back in your box and enjoy your bath!” -heather.bridgla

How to use:
You can use this bubble bottle over, and over, and over again. Hold under the tap for mountains of bubbles, then save for when you’re ready to summon splendid suds all over again. Best used fresh.

How to store:
Store in a cool, dry place before your first encounter, and in between future soaks. Enough for 8-10 baths!

Shower Gels. | Joie de Jayme Shower Gels.

I know I have talked about several of LUSH’s shower gels in other posts, but I finally have a large enough repertoire of gels in order to make an entire post about them. In general, LUSH’s shower gels are extremely effective, long-lasting and fragrant. On average, the largest size (16.9 fl oz or 500ml) lasts about 1 year and 3 months because the product is so highly concentrated. In this case, a little does go a very long way. Before LUSH came into my life, I probably went through one large bottle of shower gel per month, so only using one bottle for over a year is wonderful!

The shower gel section of my LUSH collection

Some shower gels are seasonal, meaning that they only are on the shelves or online during a certain holiday or a limited period of time. Sometimes they keep bringing back a certain shower gel during the same time of year because people love it; for example– Snow Fairy shower gel. This gel is a huge LUSH fan favorite and so they bring it back every Christmas. These are the seasonal/limited time shower gels that I own:

Rose Jam Shower Gel

The Rose Jam shower gel came out last year around October. I was so freaking excited to buy this shower gel because it has the same scent as my favorite bubble bar– Rose Jam Bubbleroon. The scent is a modern rose with a hint of lemon. For our one year anniversary, my boyfriend surprised me with a LUSH present that included one small Rose Jam shower gel and Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner. The Rose Jam shower gel is one of the best gels I have ever used! It smells just like the Bubbleroon and it lathers up so well. The gel is super softening for the skin, plus you can use it as a shampoo. I give it an A++! And I now have one large size, one medium and two smalls… I’m a happy and lucky girl!

Smells like: Rose Jam Bubbleroon, Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner, A Million Kisses lip tint and Chou Chou toothy tabs.

Ponche Shower Gel

I think Ponche has been around for the past two Christmas seasons at LUSH. I never smelled it in the store, but I ordered it online this past Christmas during the BOGO sale. After Christmas is over, LUSH has a sale in stores and online that you can buy one product and get one for free! So I bought the medium and the small size bottles of Ponche just because I wanted to try it out and the reviews were very positive. It is inspired by a Mexican Christmas punch– so it is very fruity and slightly boozy. I really like the smell of it! It lathers up extremely well and helps to wake me up. It deserves an A+!

Snow Fairy Shower Gel

Snow Fairy is the most popular Christmas time shower gel. It is a light pink shower gel with glitter and it smells like cotton candy… No wonder people love it! It’s a really fun treat to use when I want to feel especially girly. It makes really nicely fragrant bubbles and would be great as a bubble bath as well! I give it an A!

Smells like: Bubble Gum lip scrub, MMM bath melt and  Creamy Candy bubble bar.

Prince Charming Shower Gel

This was actually a free gift from LUSH because of a problem I had with one of my other orders… but I don’t like it. This is one of the first LUSH products that I just do not like. It came out for Valentine’s Day and it is supposed to smell like pomegranate, marshmallow and vanilla, but the whole thing just smells like really sour grapefruit when it’s on my skin. It lathers well and does its job, but I just do not like the smell of it. I think there is just too much going on for my nose to handle, therefore the scent is lost to me. I give it a C. Sorry LUSH!

Now for the Year- Round shower gels!!

The Olive Branch

This has turned into one of my favorite shower gels. I think Rose Jam and The Olive Branch are my two favorites. This one smells so, so, so uniquely good. It is filled with fresh mandarins, bergamot oil and olive oil. All the ingredients have come together in a perfect harmony in this shower gel! Because of the Fair for Life olive oil, this gel is so softening to the skin. It is noticeably different how much softer my skin is after using this gel. Plus the linger of The Olive Branch scent is more than most shower gels. I feel truly blessed to be able to use this shower gel. I only have the small size but I will definitely buy the large one as soon as I need it. A definite A++!

Smells like: The Christmas Penguin bubble bar (seasonal) and Pop in the Bath bubble bar.

It’s Raining Men

I have another post that includes this shower gel so I’ll just keep this one short. It is a wonderful shower gel that lathers well and smells great! I have a new bottle of it and unfortunately the smell is not at all the same as my previous It’s Raining Men. I think they may have even changed the formula of it, because it is drastically different. But even as a new smell, it is really nice. So I give it an A!

Smells like: Honey I Washed the Kids soap, Honey Bee bath bomb, Soft Coeur massage bar and Gold FUN (seasonal).

Rub Rub Rub

I mostly bought this shower gel because it smells like my favorite shampoo bar, but I loved it because it was such a great gel! Instead of being in a normal bottle, Rub Rub Rub is in a classic LUSH black pot because it is filled with sea salt for a great exfoliating gel. It smells very fresh, clean and floral. It can also be used as a wonderful shampoo! It is scrubby while also being very softening for the skin. I really like this shower gel and it deserves an A!

Smells like: Seanik shampoo bar and Sakura bath bomb.

Grass

I only have a sample size of this shower gel and I do quite like it. It honestly smells just like a freshly mown lawn– which might seem strange, but it’s very relaxing for me. It’s such a fresh scent and kind of herbal. It wouldn’t be something that I would want to use every single day but I think it would be nice to have around if I had an especially stressful day. So I give it an A!

Smells like: The Green Bubbleroon

Arrivederci!

Lush Takes An Ecological Approach To Retailing

Lush takes an ecological approach to retailing, so the majority of their products are sold “naked” without wasteful packaging. They make solid products, like shampoo bars, soap and Bath Bombs that don’t require additional packaging; the water is “added” at home to activate the product. In fact, the brand says that if everyone in North America used Lush’s solid shampoo bars, it would prevent the waste of 122 million bottles from entering the environment.

When packaging is needed to protect the product, Lush uses recycled components. One of the brand’s largest recycling initiatives is its Black Pot recycling program—for every five black pots that are returned to the store, customers receive a free fresh face mask. In 12 months, more than 300,000 black pots were collected and recycled into new black pots or heavy-duty material like construction beams. These pots are made with number 5 plastic and are not easily recycled in many municipalities. Products available in this packaging include Dream Cream hand and body lotion and Ocean Salt face and body scrub.

Lush’s ethical buying manager, Heather Deeth, has been instrumental in getting North American plastics manufacturers to accept and recycle/repurpose #5 plastic, which the Black Pots are made of. In the past, this plastic had only been recycled and manufactured in Asia.

Lush’s Heather Deeth (top) and

Katrina Shum.

When it comes to plastic bottles, the brand uses 100% post-consumer recycled plastic. These bottles are used for products including The Olive Branch Shower Gel, made with organic olive oil.

Recently Beauty Packaging’s Jamie Matusow asked Lush’s ethical buying manager, Heather Deeth, and sustainability manager, Katrina Shum, more about the brand’s goals concerning packaging, and learned that their eco-friendly philosophy extends from shopping bags packing peanuts.

Is environmentally responsible packaging part of your DNA? What was the impetus behind it?

Creating Naked and packaging-free products at Lush is at the core of our philosophy. We’d rather put our efforts into what goes inside of our products instead of packaging. We use as little packaging in our Lush shops as possible, and give you the choice to go completely Naked. When we say “Naked” we are referring to our products that you can buy with absolutely no packaging at all—like our Bath Bombs, bubble bars, massage bars, body butters and solid shampoo bars.

For the limited packaging that we do use, we support efforts toward building a circular economy. We use biodegradable options for packaging peanuts and cellophane wrap. Biofoam is one of our most well-known compostable materials used for packing. Rather than the typical Styrofoam packing peanuts that typically exist, our packing peanuts are a non-GMO corn based bioresin that dissolves in water to be easily composted.

We also use 100% recycled content material for plastic, paper or cardboard. Through our take back program, we offer customers a free fresh face mask for every 5 black pots they return. These black pots are then returned to our manufacturing facilities to be recycled into new black pots and construction materials. Even our shopping bags that our customers take their product home in are 100% post-consumer recycled paper.

How has consumer interest/acceptance evolved over the years?

Many customers shop at Lush because they support our ethics and values as a company. Many of our customers choose to adopt more sustainable gift-wrapping alternatives, as well. We offer knot wraps, gifts wrapped in reusable scarves. We encourage customers to reuse the scarves as gift wrap, decoration or as an accessory. Not only are our knot wraps reusable, they are also made of recycled plastic bottles or organic cotton. To encourage the use of reusable packaging for our Naked products, we offer reusable tins for solid shampoo and body butter bars as well.

: What are the challenges faced on the supplier and brand sides?

Some of the challenges include sourcing local/North American manufacturers for our packaging needs. Working with recycled materials is still a new process for many manufacturers so we need to continuously work with our vendors to expand their capacity to work with recycled materials. Farther back into the supply chain, we’re working to find vendors who can get high quality recycled content feedstock (the recycled plastic resin that gets turned into our black pots, clear bottles, etc. ).

We’re also increasing recycling and composting services available through the malls and municipalities where our shops operate and where our customers live. There is a strong need to further build the capacity, availability and technology for recycling and material recovery in more cities and municipalities across North America. Overall, the supply of recycled materials from North America has only become an option for us in the past few years. Before then we had to purchase from Asia where most of our plastic waste is shipped. By improving the recycling capacity here in North America we have the opportunity to really reduce the carbon impact and support using plastics that are already in existence.

On the paper side, we only use post-consumer recycled paper as well. It is increasingly difficult to source sufficient recycled paper due to several paper mill closures in the past few years, and with less paper in circulation as digital options become more popular. We work very closely with our suppliers through the entire supply chain to build relationships and secure sufficient supply.

: How do you imagine the future of beauty and personal care in regard to environmentally responsible packaging and practices—from brand, consumer and retailer perspectives?

When it comes to packaging, we continue to believe that less is more. Reducing the overall amount of unnecessary packaging across the beauty/personal care industry would be a win for all.

Where packaging is required, there have been some great evolutions in sustainable packaging with new compostable materials, alternatives to petroleum-based plastics, refillable and reusable options, mushroom and plant-based materials, and even trials of plastics made from carbon sequestered from the atmosphere.

Please include any additional info you think our readers would be interested in.

A few interesting initiatives: We worked with our suppliers to reduce the weight of our clear bottles which saves 3 metric tons a year of plastic. In 2015 we received back 880,000 black pots (approx. 14 metric tons of plastics) from our customers which were converted to new black pots. In 2014, we mixed 200 kgs of plastics collected from the ocean (off the coast of British Columbia) into our black bottles.

Lush American Cream Shower Gel Naked vs. Bottled: Is There A Difference?

Back when the Lush Valentines Collection launched I fell in love with the Lush American Cream Shower Gel. I first bought the American Cream Naked Shower Gel and a while later I bought the bottled version as well. Not because I didn’t like the naked one, but because I knew I needed more of this shower gel before it was gone and I was curious to find out if there would be any difference in the naked vs. the bottled version of the same product. So, in today’s post I’m going to compare these two products, talk about the pro’s and cons of both products and let you guys know which one I prefer in the end. If you’re interested in reading about all that, make sure you continue reading this post!

It’s pretty obvious, but the bottled version of the Lush American Cream Shower Gel comes in a bottle. This is one of those classic Lush bottles and I totally love the look of it. It looks so authentic and it’s just a piece of eye candy to have laying around in my body care collection. Yes, I have a serious body care collection, don’t judge. I love that you can see the milky pink colour through the bottle and I’m still so in love with the font Lush uses to write down the names of their products. It looks so cool!

The Lush American Cream Shower Gel comes in three sizes. There’s a small size, containing 100 ml, which will set you back €9,50. There’s a medium size, containing 275 ml at the cost of €18,95. And there’s a big size, containing 500 ml for €31,50. I ended up going for the medium size because I already have one naked shower gel bottle of this laying around and these puppies can expire. However, mine contains 250 ml instead of 275 ml because I bought it from the UK website and somehow they have different sizes.

Lush American Cream Shower Gel 250/275 ml – €18,95

Looking at these two shower gels side by side I get very happy. I love the pink colour of them and since I love the scent of American Cream, I’m really happy I got two ‘bottles’ of it now. In terms of scent I do think that these two products are pretty much the same. I don’t notice a strong or clear difference in the scent and there’s no difference in how intense the scent is in both products.

For those of you who aren’t familiar yet with the American Cream shower gel or scent in general (by the way: you’re missing out!) I will describe it very briefly. American Cream smells like a strawberry milkshake. It’s a sweet and fruity scent, but it’s no typical strawberry scent. It also has some vanilla to it which adds warmth to the scent and creates the perfect balance of everything you want your body to smell like. I might be a bit biased on this subject, but lord do I love the scent of this shower gel. It’s amazing!

One thing I was curious about is what size bottle the naked version represents. I mean, the normal bottles come in three sizes, but the naked one only in one. According to Lush is lasts twice as long as their bottled version but I can’t find the exact numbers on what amount if should represent. Looking at the size I’m guessing the medium bottle, but considering the fact they say it lasts twice as long it might resemble the 500 ml bottle.

The main pro about the normal, bottled shower gel is that we’re used to using it. At first I truly thought that the bottled shower gel was easier to use, but I’m not so sure about that anymore. I mean, whenever I use a shower gel I take it with me underneath the shower, use it, and then take it out, dry it off and put it back in my collection again. With the naked shower gel I do the same, but the using it part is actually easier. You don’t have to squeeze product out, you can use it directly onto your body. So I personally think that it’s a matter of getting used to. Because naked shower gels are so new, we’re not used to using them yet. But I’m sure that will change over time.

In my experience the naked shower gel lasts a very long time. But I do think that it depends on how you use it. I slice off a piece of the shower gel (as I told you guys in my Lush Tips post) and I keep that piece in a little Lush tin. This way the rest of the product doesn’t get wet and you won’t melt away as much product. However, if you just use the whole thing (so without slicing off a piece) I’m sure it won’t last as long.

When it comes to actually doing good for my skin I feel like the naked shower gel might even win. Somehow I feel like the naked products are more moisturising and hydrating and because you use them directly onto your skin you might feel that a little more. In the Naked American Pie Body Conditioner this difference is probably caused by the ingredients, since the solid one has more butters in it than the potted one does, and I’m sure that’s the same case in this shower gel.

All in all I really like the Lush American Cream Shower Gel. I think the scent is absolutely amazing and ground breaking and I just can’t get over it. In terms of the bottled version vs. the naked version I’m not sure. I actually am leaning towards the naked one but I think it’s also a matter of what you’re used to. I’m sure that in a couple of years, when we’re more used to using naked products, many peoples opinion on them might have changed!

With that being said I’m ending today’s post. Thank you so much for reading it and be sure to let me know what you prefer: naked or bottled. And also let me know if you love the American Cream scent just as much as I do!

Lush’s Recycling Program Can Get You a Free Face Mask

If you’re a fan of Lush, you’d probably like to know how you can get free products from the cruelty-free cosmetics company. (Other than coyly asking employees for free samples every time you walk into a Lush store, that is.) Luckily, Lush offers a take back program to make sure its packaging gets recycled, and participants even get rewarded with a free face mask. Here’s how you can get involved and score a free face mask of your own.

Article continues below advertisement

The initiative, called the 5 Pot Program, encourages customers to save the black plastic pots that package Lush products including face masks, moisturizers, shaving soaps, body scrubs, and more. You can bring in five of the pots to your local Lush store, and in return, you’ll receive a Fresh Face Mask of your choice, free of charge. Green Matters spoke with Lush spokesperson Eva Cook via email to learn more about how the program works, to find out if Lush accepts any of its other packaging for recycling, and to hear about Lush’s other sustainability initiatives.

As Cook tells Green Matters, Lush takes all of the black pots that are returned to stores, and brings them to its manufacturing plant, where they are chipped down and remolded into new black pots. She explains that the take back program only accepts the black pots for a few reasons: at the local level, black plastic can be more difficult to recycle than clear plastic; the black pots are the most-used packaging in Lush stores; and black plastic is a high-quality material that “can be ground down and made into new pots close to our manufacturing facilities.”

In 2018, Cook says 1,271,551 black pots were returned to Lush stores, which means 254,310 free face masks were given to cusomers.

That said, if you do not have a way to recycle or compost Lush’s other packaging, most stores will let you bring the packaging back to be disposed of (even though it won’t count toward a free face mask). “Customers can definitely bring in other Lush packaging, like clear recycled plastic bottles and compostable items like the Natureflex, which is a biodegradable cellophane, used to protect naked items in transit, and our shop staff will recycle or dispose of appropriately,” Cook says.

Article continues below advertisement

“The only exception is a handful of stores where local recycling or composting infrastructure is not available,” Cook continues. “We are working on a program whereby we can collect recycling in those areas and use a third party vendor to ensure those returned materials are recycled or responsibly disposed. For those areas where recycling isn’t possible, we encourage people to reduce and reuse as much as possible: to opt for naked versions of the products they love, choose eco-friendly ways to transport their products home, and reuse any of our recycled packaging (our pots make great plant pots!).”

While plastic is not the perfect packaging option, all of Lush’s black pots (as well the plastic bottles) are made from 100 percent post-consumer recycled plastic. Not to mention, Lush offsets its plastic packaging with its “naked” products, which include completely package-free soap bars, shampoo bars, solid lotions, and bath bombs. Nearly 40 percent of Lush’s products are available naked, Cook notes.

If you’re looking to reduce your impact and waste in your personal hygiene, skincare, or beauty routine, Lush has a slew of sustainability initiatives and zero-waste products. For example, over the past five years, the brand has invested in a series of regenerative agriculture projects that restore damaged forests and support local communities. Lush has rebuilt degraded forests in Guatemala, Uganda, Peru, and Arizona, and the company is using these forests to grow ingredients for cosmetics.

Additionally, if you’re shopping at Lush for gifts or online, you won’t find any disposable wrapping paper or Styrofoam packing peanuts. Instead, the shop offers fabric knot-wraps, cardboard boxes, metal tins, paper bags, biodegradable packing peanuts, and compostable bioplastic baggies. And recently, Lush U.K. made headlines for selling a plastic-free refillable lipstick case and plastic-free lipstick refills in its U.K. stores, Plant Based News reported. The refills come packaged in a waxy coating that can simply be peeled off, and then the lipstick can be inserted into any standard lipstick case. Plus, all of the lipstick refills are vegan.

Article continues below advertisement

Furthermore, Lush’s brand is built on a strict anti-animal testing policy. Every Lush product is cruelty-free (meaning it was not tested on animals) and vegetarian, and more than 80 percent of its products are vegan. Earlier this month, the company announced that it will no longer use eggs in its products, after discovering the cruelty of the egg industry, even on free range farms. “We can no longer, in good conscience, use an ingredient that we are unable to be transparent about because the truth is so unpalatable,” Lush said in a statement explaining the decision, Marie Claire reported.

As Cook writes to Green Matters, “[Lush’s] biggest movement right now is towards getting rid of packaging all together.” While it may not yet be a completely zero-waste store, Lush definitely makes it easier for customers to reduce their waste by offering cruelty-free cosmetics, naked products, and an incentive for returning black pots.

Lush Snow Fairy Shower Gel

When I first started blogging, the Lush Snow Fairy Shower Gel was raved about by absolutely everyone, and you couldn’t watch a favourites video without Snow Fairy being mentioned. I tried the Lush Snow Fairy Shower Gel maybe six years ago, and I remember not being wowed, but when I placed a recent Lush order, I decided to purchase it again to see what the fuss is all about.

Lush Snow Fairy Shower Gel

Whilst Snow Fairy isn’t raved about as much as it was six to eight years ago, it’s still a bestselling cult favourite for Lush, and there’s now a massive range of Snow Fairy products. With bath bombs, bubble bars, body spray, body conditioner, solid highlighter, shampoo bar and even merch!

This candy-sweet Christmas shower gel is packed with plastic-free glitter. Shimmer with Lush Snow Fairy magic that comes but once a year.

The Lush Snow Fairy Shower Gel is available in four different sizes; 100g £5, 250g £10, 500g £17.50 and 1 kg £28. I bought the 100g bottle, and £5 is expensive for only 100g but Lush‘s shower gels are all pretty pricey.

Inside the bottle, you can see purple sparkle gathering on the bottom of the bottle, but the shimmer never translates onto the skin so it feels a little pointless. It smells sickly sweet, but in a good way, and is like candy floss in a bottle. I

t doesn’t lather well when used directly onto the skin, but it lathers a lot better when used with a shower puff. I love how soft the Lush Snow Fairy Shower Gel leaves my skin, but it’s just not a wow kind of shower gel. I ordered two other shower gels at the same time I ordered the Snow Fairy Shower Gel, and I’ll feature them also, very soon!

You can find the Lush Snow Fairy Shower Gel right here.

Dam-Jean, Gerobam, Imperial … what are these bottles for, who called them that, and what should you think about them?

Tangled history without legal existence

The history of the origin of the names is a little lost in most cases despite their recent appearance, as modern bottles date back only to the 18th century.

The name Dame-jeanne (or Marie-Jean), used for a pot-bellied 2.55 L bottle (3 L in Bordeaux), resembles the silhouette of a lush housekeeper. Historically, it was the container for the robust eaux-de-vie sailors in the south of France. The poet Mistral mentions, however, “ Damajana “, and these bottles are still used today in Roussillon for some wines (Banyuls, Maury).

The bottle name Magnum is undeniably derived from the Latin language, which means “big”.It should be noted that the magnum remains the equivalent of a double bottle, following an unfortunate downward trend. When the standard bottle contained 1 liter, the magnum was 2 liters, and its volume changed by 1.5 liters when the bottle was limited to 0.75 liters.

With bottle Jéroboam * (or Jéroboam) Old Testament references begin. “Strong and brave” King of Israel (meaning a hint of the properties expected from the bottle), this ruler also “forced to commit [sins] in Israel” (belated call for moderation?).In Champagne this bottle contains 3 liters, in Bordeaux 5 liters, while the equivalent of a 3 liter bottle there is usually called a “double magnum”.

Bottle Réoboam * (4.5 L), Mathusalem (6 L), Salmanazar (9 L), Balthasar (12 l), Nebuchadnezzar (Nabuchodonosor) (16 l) are typical of Champagne and are associated with the kings of the Middle East, which are mentioned in the Bible. No one remembers who came up with the idea to name the bottles that way.

The bottle Imperial represents a volume of 5 liters (sometimes 6 liters) and received this name in Bordeaux. If Napoleon I remains a demigod for many people, in this case we are talking more about Napoleon III. With his classification of Medoc wines in 1855, he did a lot for the important Castles of the region.

Bottles Primat (27 L), Melchisedec (30 L) are trade names coined by the House of Champagne Drapier.

Anyway, all these names have no official recognition. However, fortunately, given the fact that they differ in different regions. The only thing that matters is the volume indicated without fail on the bottle label and in the restaurant menu card.

But why is it necessary to produce large bottles?

In addition to the calculated prestige, pride to show that we have a large bottle, or even the ability to drink in a company from one bottle, some volumes may be of interest:

As the volume of the bottle increases, the neck does not change its size (the neck of most Magnum bottles is identical to the neck of a regular bottle). As soon as the gas exchange in relation to the contained wine decreases, conditions arise for a better and slower aging in large containers. For strong red wines, tannins will soften, in champagnes the sediment will give more complex aromas, the patient owner of a large bottle will benefit. (Recall, however, that sediment is present in a bottle of champagne only during the second fermentation, which creates foam. This sediment is then removed before the champagne is sold. Therefore, it is vain and even risky to leave the champagne in the bottle for aging, no matter how large the bottle may be. ).

In addition, for Champagne, the second fermentation is carried out in a bottle of less than Gerobam. The production of larger bottles is only made to order, and the winemaker fills them … from 75 cl bottles. Hence the only interest they are of only use for the holiday.

It should be noted that all of these large bottles also have some inconveniences. Larger containers have a higher cost, which makes a Magnum bottle more expensive than two regular bottles (and so on).Serving large quantities of wine becomes difficult at once. And finally, any open bottle must be quickly drunk (even more so if it cannot then fit into the refrigerator).

But the joy caused by the sight of a large bottle is universally incommensurable!

Lush palm tree crown made of plastic bottles.DIY plastic bottle palm

Do-it-yourself palm tree to decorate the site can be made not only from plastic bottles or old tires, but also from other cheap materials. Garden ideas are very loyal in this regard.

One of the options is an ornamental palm tree, the trunk of which is made of flower pots, and the foliage at the top is a pot with a large ornamental deciduous plant.

Materials for creating a palm tree

  • Flower pots – 10-12 pieces.The more pots, the taller the tree will be. The pots should be the same model but different sizes;
  • metal pipe;
  • pot with a plant.

How to make a palm tree with your own hands – in stages

We fix the metal pipe in the ground. This is the base for the trunk, and the trunk must be stable as a large plant pot will be planted on top of it. You can take a very long pipe and stick it deep into the ground, but it will be safer to concrete it.

We dig a narrow, but deep (50-60 cm) hole, fill in rubble, install a pipe, add rubble to the ground level and fill it with mortar (cement + sand + water). The mortar should be liquid to fill the gaps between the rubble stones.
We prepare the pots – we drill a hole in each with a diameter slightly larger than the diameter of the pipe. If the pots are earthenware (ceramic), we use a ceramic drill for drilling. You can make several holes with a thin drill in a circle, and then squeeze out the middle. But it is best to immediately take a drill “crown” of a suitable size. It is not difficult to make holes in the bottoms of plastic pots: they can be drilled or cut out.
String the pots upside down on the pipe. We set larger pots down, smaller ones up.

At the very top we place a pot of such a size that the flowerpot in which the plant grows fits into it. It’s good if it is deep.
We put the pot with the plant in the flowerpot. Between the walls, you can lay some material, for example, tightly push the film, oilcloth, put sticks-spacers.All this is to fix the flowerpot in the pot.

Do-it-yourself palm tree turned out to be tall, beautiful and truly exotic.

What plants to use for homemade palm trees

Choose large plants with long leaves that resemble the leaves of real palms. There are many such plants – both indoor and outdoor. By the way, it is very useful for indoor plants to “live” outside in the summer – under the sun, in the fresh air. They will recover their health before the autumn cold.
Ferns – nephrolepis, davallia, asplenium, bracken, dwarf

Chlorophytum

This is the only one that can grow in our gardens.

Do you want to have an evergreen palm in your garden? Or make it stand in a tub in your house all year round without the need for watering and maintenance? It doesn’t matter that it’s cold outside, such a miracle is quite within your power. It’s very simple – just know how to make a palm tree from plastic bottles.

What you need

The material from which we will make our palm is found in every home. Save a few 2L water or beer containers in the colors we want – green and brown. So let’s decide what we might need before making a bottle palm tree.

  1. Thick barrel rod. It is optimal to use a metal rod, but a willow rod or a smooth, even branch of any tree will do just fine.
  2. Brown plastic bottles. The more there are, the higher the trunk of the palm tree will be. In general, they are needed in an amount of 10 to 15 pieces.
  3. Similar green bottles for the crown – 2-3 pieces. Here it is also – the more bottles, the more luxuriant the foliage of the palm tree.
  4. Awl or drill.
  5. Knife or scissors.

How to make a palm tree from plastic bottles?

Let’s start with the wellbore preparation. For the bark from a brown plastic bottle, cut out a blank 10 centimeters long. To do this, we cut off the bottom of the container. We carry out this procedure with each bottle. You can also use the upper part of the same container, from which you should cut off a narrow neck and then measure the same height to the cut line.On the edges on the blanks, we form teeth, like a crown, and bend them to the sides. The teeth should be about 5 centimeters high.

Second stage

The next step in our instructions on how to make a palm tree from plastic bottles is to prepare the foliage. For the base of the crown of the palm tree, we take one of the green bottles and cut off the bottom from it, but at the same time we leave the neck with the thread under the lid – it will come in handy to secure the entire deciduous structure. We remove the neck from the rest of the bottles. Then, on each workpiece obtained, we cut out the leaves, not reaching the end of 5 centimeters. The edges of each sheet can be decorated with cloves, it’s really a matter of your desire and imagination. Just remember, plastic bottles have very sharp teeth, don’t cut yourself! The larger the volume of the container, the longer the foliage of the palm will be. Now we collect the blanks one on top of the other on the neck and fix them with a twisting plug.

Third stage

It remains to make holes, including in the lid on which the crown is attached. They can be drilled with a drill or made with a heated awl. Now all that remains is to collect the palm tree. Fasten the base of the structure in a pot of soil or dig into the spot where your palm tree will grow. Plant on it one after another brown blanks – bark, and then crown it with a ready-made lush green crown. The palm is ready!

Conclusion

Now you know how to make a palm tree from plastic bottles. This process does not require money, but it will become good fun for you and your children, teach them how to do small miracles with their own hands, decorate their home or plot, and find non-standard ways to use seemingly ordinary things like plastic bottles.

Dacha plots, especially in central Russia, cannot boast of the presence of exotic plants from hot countries on them, first of all, because these plants need a completely different climate. But you really want to sometimes mentally return to the warm sea, sit under a palm tree and watch the sunset. And if it is impossible to organize the seas at the dacha, then “cultivating” a palm tree is very simple, you just need to collect a large number of empty plastic bottles. In this article, we offer you a do-it-yourself palm making workshop.

First of all, I must say that there are many different ways to build such a palm tree. And they all turn out to be different, but very similar to the real ones:

In our master class we will try to make a palm tree, as in the photo:

Making a palm tree from plastic bottles

To make a palm tree for you you will need:

  • Plastic bottles (at least 100 pieces, green and brown)
  • Scissors
  • Candle
  • A piece of reinforcement or an iron pin
  • Wire

Step-by-step instructions for collecting a palm tree:

1.First of all, all the bottles must be prepared: wash, peel off the labels, remove the safety rings for the cap from the neck. Any bottle from the smallest to the largest will work.

2. Cut the bottom off the green bottles with a knife. The bottom is cut as close to the edge as possible, so that the remainder of the bottles is longer, then the palm leaves will be fluffy and large.

3. The bottle is cut. 1.5 liter, liter – into three parts, 2 liter – by 4. You need to cut the bottle up to the throat, and cut each petal along the edge – to give the desired shape.

4. We make a fringe on each leaf – very finely, so the palm will be more magnificent. There should be about 1 cm of an intact bottle in the center.

5. Light a candle and bring the outer side of the petal to the flame. The fringe will get an interesting shape and become more alive.

We get a blank, and we have to make them 36. Six branches. And each of them has 6 leaves.

6. The next step is to prepare the palm planting site.An iron rod is taken and hammered into the ground by 30-40 centimeters.

7. For brown bottles, cut off the bottom as evenly as possible and put it on the rod. Then we put on the next bottle on this bottle, etc. until the end of the length of the rod.

8. Use welding rods or thick wire to join all 6 branches together. To do this, in the uppermost bottle of the barrel, you need to make 3 holes through and through (crosswise). Pass a thick wire through them and put on ready-made branches with leaves on this wire.

9. At the bottom of our 6 branches there are covers in which you need to make 2 holes. The wire is pulled through the entire branch and twisted at the top (there is the same cover with 2 holes). One more hole must be made to attach the branch to the welding rod at the base.

As a result, we get a wonderful palm tree (small in the picture):

There is another way to make a trunk for a palm tree, as a result of which the palm will have a slightly different look:

1.To create such a barrel, you need to cut the brown bottles so that the bottom is slightly larger. The upper part is cut into 8 parts to the point of narrowing of the bottle, and then we cut off the tips of each of the 8 parts so that they take a triangular shape and bend at the base, we do the same with the lower part of the bottle, but we make a hole in it equal in diameter neck.

So, we told you how to make a palm tree out of plastic bottles step by step, now we suggest that you watch a video lesson on this master class.

We wish you creative achievements!

Together with my son, we agreed to make a palm tree from plastic bottles for the garden. It turned out that there are many ways to implement the idea. Wanting to get the best specimen, we tried several schemes for assembling an exotic plant, which we will tell you about.

Starting to assemble a palm tree from plastic bottles, we fully realized the main problem: a huge amount of containers is needed! It must be borne in mind that all this abundance of bottles must be washed, cut up and collected with our own hands. The scissors gave his son blisters. In the process of work, three ways of solving the issue were discovered:

  • to make a small tree;
  • Use technology with less material;
  • paint transparent bottles.

This all went through our hands several times

As a result, we decided to make a medium-sized tree. We painted only three bottles. We have achieved the use of containers almost without scraps, that is, by 90%. 35 brown and the same green plastic bottles were spent on the entire product. We give a description of the creation of what you see in the photo, as well as diagrams for assembling a small and large tree with your own hands. We made a man under a tree from plastic bottles earlier.

Man-made palm and “local” created earlier

Assembling the trunk for a medium-sized palm

We will start assembling the tree from the trunk. It will require a metal tube that easily fits into the neck of the bottle. The tube should be 50cm longer than the palm tree: this part will be in the ground.

We used a whole 150cm tube to assemble the barrel. For installation on the ground, they hammered into the ground 50 cm long reinforcement 1 m long, on which they put a tube of the supporting structure of the palm tree. Below is a step-by-step instruction and a diagram for assembling crafts for a garden and a vegetable garden. The step numbers here and below correspond to the numbers in the pictures:

The result is the trunk of a palm tree. The diameter of the tree is not the same due to the use of different bottles, but in nature it happens.

Small trunk for palm trees

We know that the surface of the palm tree has jagged protrusions of the remnants of branches. At a short distance, they are clearly visible, so a trunk of a different design is better for a small tree.

A small palm tree can have a different trunk design

A small palm tree can be installed in the country house right next to the wall of the house. In this case, you need to perform the following operations in stages:

Manufacturing technology for a trunk for a large palm tree

There is a third method for manufacturing a trunk of a palm tree. If we want to make a large tree for a summer cottage, close in size to a natural one, the examples already considered will not work due to the disproportionately small diameter of the trunk and the fragility of the structure. In this case, you will have to cut off the lowest parts of the plastic bottles, and then drill and fasten them with screws or nails to the log. Of course, a lot of containers will be required.

Variant of making a natural-sized trunk

Master-class for making a crown for a medium-sized palm tree

Now let’s deal with the crown of an exotic tree. For its assembly, we also chose a design with full use of plastic bottles. Bottles are different, and we divided them into five groups for five tree branches in advance, trying to keep all the sets approximately the same.To assemble the crown, you need to perform the following steps step by step:

Like the trunk, the crown of a palm tree can be done in different ways. It is very convenient to choose the required option based on the size of the tree. Going back to the medium size sample, you can make a fluffier crown. However, in this case, you will have to cut bottles with a step of 5 mm, that is, do it yourself three times more work. In addition, in this case only the upper third of the bottle is used, which would require three times the starting material.

Making a crown for a small tree

Now we present a master class for making a crown for a small palm tree. This craft is well suited for beginners. In this case, it takes noticeably more time to work with each detail, but noticeably fewer bottles will be required, and the crown of the tree will have a more natural look with a small distance to a small tree.

This crown will only require a few bottles. The step-by-step instructions will be as follows:

Other options for making an artificial tree crown

Options for palm crowns with different leaves

Note that palm leaves can be cut using a different pattern. If you wake up your imagination, you can come up with something new and make your own palm tree from a plastic container on your own.

Please note that the crown shown in the photo below is a good choice for making a large tree.

Already with some experience, we understand that this option will require a large amount of source material. As you can see, only the lower parts of exactly the same bottles, strung on a wire, are used here.

To ensure that the individual links do not fit into each other, the top of each blank is cut and folded inward.

Hope you have the best plastic bottle palm. The video below will help you clarify the missing details.

A palm tree made of plastic bottles will take its rightful place on your personal plot and will delight the eye at any time of the year. Making plastic wood is not difficult, the main thing is to find a sufficient amount of material. We offer step by step instructions for beginners
, how to make a palm tree from plastic bottles.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Make a Plastic Palm

First you need to prepare the materials. You can use brown and green bottles or clear ones and paint them later. You will need:

  • Plastic bottles of various sizes
  • Wooden stick or reinforcement for the frame
  • Dense rope or wire.

Conditional palm making
can be divided into three steps:

  1. Making palm branches
  2. Making a tree trunk
  3. Combining all the pieces into one tree.

Step 1
… To keep the leaves wide, use 2 liter green bottles. To do this, cut off the bottom of the bottle and cut the bottle lengthwise into 7 parts. Give each leaf a suitable shape and make a fringe. For one leaf, you will need about 10-15 bottles. Connect them through the neck using a rope or wire. You can make small cuts along the bottle, then the leaves are more fluffy.

Step 2.
To make a tree trunk, you will need brown beer bottles. Now you will have to cut off the neck, and work with the lower half-bottom. Make triangular cuts on each bottle blank, then gently fold the edges outward. In the center of the bottom, you will have to burn a hole with a heated metal rod, the diameter of which depends on the diameter of the base for the frame. The number of bottles depends on the desired height for your tree. Insert them one into one on the frame, and you get a trunk.

Step 3.
Now you can start to fully assemble the tree. If you strung the leaves on a metal cable, then you can simply weld them to the trunk. To prevent the palm tree from flying away, make a foundation and dig deep into the rod-trunk. Try making a small palm tree first, and then plant a few more plastic trees next to it.

was useful and your backyard area will change significantly.

Bottles are … What is Bottles?

Milk bottles

Sauce bottles

Bottle (from FR. bouteille through Polish. butelka ) – a small container for long-term storage of liquids, a tall vessel of predominantly cylindrical shape and with a narrow neck, convenient for clogging with a stopper. It is made mainly of glass (often dark), more recently, often from polymeric materials (usually polyethylene).Less common are bottles made of ceramics, metal and other materials. Also known are natural “pumpkin bottles” – calabash.

Bottles are usually made in standard sizes. In the Russian system of measures, a (wine) bottle is a unit of liquid volume equal to 0.615 liters. In the USSR, the most popular were bottles with a capacity of 0.5 liters (two main varieties: milk with a wide neck, sealed with foil, and for other drinks – with a narrow neck) and 0.7 liters (for wine). For champagne, bottles of larger capacity made of more durable glass were often used, and for cognac, special flat bottles. The main international wine bottle size is 0.75 liters.

Large bottles are sometimes referred to as bottles .

For technical, scientific and medical purposes, bottles with a printed scale are produced, which allow accurate measurement of the volume of liquid poured. For laboratory purposes, bottles of various shapes are made, for example, with two necks.

Types of bottles

Glass bottle

glass bottle from “Sprite” 0.33 liters

A glass bottle is more expensive, as a result of which a drink in a glass container is more expensive than a similar volume in a plastic container.Among the advantages of glass, better storage of the drink stands out, which is why it is considered that a drink from a glass bottle is “tastier”. Another big advantage of glass bottles is the possibility of multiple reuse.

Plastic bottle

Among the containers for bottling carbonated drinks, the most popular are plastic bottles due to their low production costs. Such bottles, as a rule, have a larger volume than glass bottles, and are safer due to their elasticity.Plastic bottles have become very popular in everyday life and can be used for various needs. The first Pepsi plastic bottle hit the US market in 1970. [1] Since 1973 lavsan bottles (PET bottles) have been used. In Russia, plastic bottles gained popularity after the Western corporations Coca-Cola and Novorossiysk entered the soft drinks market. [2]

Plastic bottle Dr. Pepper

Plastic bottles are widely used in households. In third world countries, where common European dishes and containers are rare, plastic containers are in significant demand, in Ethiopia, used bottles are sold directly on the markets. Birdhouses, mousetraps, funnels and seedling pots are made from bottles. Used to protect young rice sprouts. Hang on the fence as a scarecrow from crows. In Kazakhstan, washstands are made from a plastic bottle, and in Indonesia, stabilizers are used to stabilize fishing boats. In Mongolia, they are burned as sacrifices to spirits. [3] The use of plastic bottles for alcoholic beverages is discouraged as alcohol can interfere with the release of harmful substances from plastic.

Champagne bottles

Champagne bottles are named after biblical characters:

  • quarter (also quart, split or piccolo bottle) (187.5 or 200 ml) used mainly by airlines and nightclubs
  • half (also Demie) (375 ml) used in restaurants
  • bottle (also.Bouteille) (750 ml)
  • Magnum (also Magnum) (1.5 l) (equivalent to 2 bottles)
  • Jeroboam (also Jeroboam) (3 L) (4 bottles)
  • Rehoboam (also Rehoboam) (4.5 l) (6 bottles)
  • Methuselah (also Methuselah) (6 l) (8 bottles)
  • Salmanazar (also Salmanazar) (9 l) (12 bottles)
  • Belshazar (also Balthazar) (12 l) (16 bottles)
  • Nebuchadnezzar (also Nebuchadnezzar) (15 l) (20 bottles)
  • Cupronickel (also Melchior) (18 l) (24 bottles)
  • Solomon (25 L)
  • Primat (also.Primat) (27 liters) (36 bottles)
  • Melchizedek (also Melchizedek) (30 l) (40 bottles)

Bottle recycling

Bottles with notes inside were used by surviving sailors to send messages about shipwrecks, and are currently used by scientists to study sea currents.

Nipple bottles are used for feeding babies.

Collecting bottle collections is a type of packaging collecting.

Also, plastic bottles with a volume of 0.5 liters are used for smoking marijuana and derivatives, including hashish (for this, a hole of a small diameter is burned in the bottle, the hashish is placed inside the bottle, wait for its complete combustion, then unscrew the cork and inhale the smoke).

Uncorking

Uncorking the bottle – procedure for releasing the bottle from the cork. Bottles are not sold with instructions on how to uncork them, but recommendations on this matter are published in many books, magazines and on the Internet.

In some situations, such as when serving wine in a restaurant, uncorking a bottle is an important ceremony. The waiters (sommeliers) are specially trained in this ritual.

The opening procedure is determined by the type of cork and the beverage contained in the bottle. Some types of plugs, such as screw caps, are easy to remove, while others, such as cork plugs, can be tricky. Fizzy drinks require special attention when uncorking.

Uses special bottle openers such as a corkscrew and a bottle opener. There are many types of them, and some of them are patented. The most successful of the opening devices are listed in the Guinness Book of Records.

In everyday life, a situation often arises when the correct device for uncorking a bottle is not at hand. In such cases, “folk” methods are used. For example, the cork can be knocked out by hitting the bottom, or pushed into the bottle. Bottles of beer and lemonade often open the bottle with a bottle, key, knife, or a bench. Some may open bottles with, say, a wedding ring, and even with teeth [1] [2] or even with an “eye” (the bones of the eye socket).

The most ceremonial procedure is to uncork a bottle of champagne – right up to the opening of it with a saber. Champagne is often uncorked in such a way that a characteristic pop is heard, and the cork flies to the ceiling.

The sound of the bottle being opened is recognizable. It is often used in sound recording (film and music) as well as imitators.

It is recommended to be careful when opening the bottle, as awkwardness can lead to injury. In particular, it is recommended not to damage the neck of the bottle, so as not to be injured by the glass and to prevent its fragments from getting inside the bottle.

Bottle stoppers and their recovery methods

Beer bottle caps

Main article: Bottle stopper

Bottles are sealed with corks in order to protect their contents from oxidation, contamination with microorganisms, dust pollution, splashing, for ease of transportation and storage. The stoppers can be combined with other devices to improve the convenience of filling the contents of the bottle or to protect it from tampering (for example, a Guala cap).Plugs must have a certain degree of reliability. However, it is the reliability and strength of the cork that sometimes creates problems for their removal. Problems arise when the bottle is uncorked with the wrong tool or using the wrong technique. The lack of a tool for opening the cork often creates difficulties in everyday life, for example, the problem of removing the cork without a corkscrew or uncorking a beer bottle without an opener. The technique is of great importance in some situations, for example, when a waiter uncorks a bottle in a restaurant or when uncorking bottles of medicine. In some cases, it may be desirable to save the cork for reuse, and the wrong method of unsealing can damage it.

Screw cap

The opening method is primarily determined by the type of cork. Caps are made mainly of the following materials: cork (corks that fit tightly in the neck of a bottle), metal (corks on beer bottles and soft drink bottles, screw caps on bottles with spirits and liqueurs), plastic (screw caps on plastic bottles with carbonated drinks, corks “from a bottle from port”, corks for champagne), foil (vodka bottles, medicines), rubber (medicines), glass (decorative bottles, medicines).Removing some of these plugs (screw, glass) is not difficult, while others have special tools.

Uncorked medicine

Various types of corkscrews are used to remove cork stoppers; an opener is used to open beer and similar bottles. (In the United States, the beer opening procedure was simplified by making the beer caps unscrewed.) In response to consumer demand, the industry produces a huge variety of corkscrews and bottle openers.

Using the corkscrew

Corkscrew varieties

Main article: Corkscrew

An old British toast states: “Wine will not be born until the cork fails with a corkscrew.”

To make it easier for the corkscrew to enter the cork, the overcap cover is sometimes cut off with a blade. It is recommended to penetrate the cork with a corkscrew in the center [3]. It is also recommended not to pierce through the cork with a corkscrew, so that pieces of it do not get into the wine.

There are several types of corkscrews.

The fastest corkscrew is the Elegance corkscrew, which is even listed in the Guinness Book of Records. The record was set in 1995 at the Orleans Gastronomy Salon – the Elegance corkscrew uncorked eight bottles in just one minute.

When there is no corkscrew

It often happens that you need to open a bottle, but there is no corkscrew at hand. In such cases, various “wrong” opening methods are used. These methods are passed down from generation to generation, described in various books, newspaper and magazine articles, including publications of scientific institutions. Thus, the newspaper “For Science” of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology published the following recipes:

Imagine that a girl comes to visit you, and you accidentally “found” a bottle of dry wine in your stash. But here’s the bad luck “there was no corkscrew in the household. What to do?
Option 1. Push the cork inside with a fork or finger (to taste). The disadvantage of this method is the spoiled appearance of the bottle, pieces of cork floating in the glass and a sad girl.
Option 2″ …Hit the bottom of the bottle with force on a vertical surface several times. Thus, you can knock out the cork, only there is a danger, firstly, to break the bottle, secondly, to spill wine, and thirdly, to stain the girl.
Option 3. Run to the neighbors for a spin. In general, you don’t need to run. They probably do not have a corkscrew, so they, brushing aside “rotten aestheticism”, will advise option 1.
And, finally, the ideal option 4. You will need a screwdriver, a large-diameter screw (~ 8 mm), pliers and a girl. Screw the screw into the cork, ask the girl to hold the bottle firmly and pull the screw together with the cork with pliers. And you will open the bottle and entertain the girl. The experience was shared by N. Gazetny
In general, the ideal option 5. You only need a knife with a blade made of hard elastic steel (preferably 1-1.5 mm thick) and a width no thicker than the diameter of the neck. The blade is pressed into the cork to a depth of 50% -70% of the cork height and with a rotational movement in any direction and a slight upward movement the cork is removed from the neck … This option helps even in clinical cases when a cheap corkscrew is not able to break the “boiled” cork. The experience was shared by BuS
Option 6, not ideal, but effective and spectacular and entertaining for others. In fairness, it should be noted that an inexperienced beginner does not always succeed. So, you need a towel and strong man’s hands. We take the bottle, first turn it over in order to wet it with the contents of the bottom of the cork, then press the cork with the thumb or the handle of a spoon and slightly push it from its place (2-3 mm down!), Now we finally turn the bottle upside down, put it on the bottom a towel folded several times, press the bottle with the neck down at an angle of 40-60 degrees to the left leg with the left hand (if left-handed, then the right to the right!) and several times hit the bottom of the bottle through the towel with a tightly clenched fist of the right hand.If you are lucky and the cork does not sit very tightly, 5-6 times energetic blows are enough and the cork will come out 25-30mm, which will be quite enough to grab it with strong fingers of a man’s hand and pull it out! Spectacular and informative, from the point of view of the physics of water hammer … But the hand then hurts slightly, but the admiring exclamations and glances of others heal. Yes, and one more side effect – the wine will turn into a soda. I shared my experience Konst.

Knocking out the cork from the bottle after hitting the bottom occurs due to water hammer. The water hammer is very strong. There are demonstrations in which, after hitting the neck, the bottom of the bottle falls off (an undesirable effect in a domestic situation).

Uncorking champagne and other carbonated drinks

When opening bottles with carbonated drinks, there is a risk of frothing, especially if the drink is not chilled (in some cases, the release of foam is provoked on purpose). In order not to pour themselves on, many remove the plug gradually so that the gas can come out in a thin stream.

Champagne can be opened noisily and quietly.

The silent method is to hold the cork to prevent it from firing from the bottle while the wire knot is lifted, unwound and removed. Then, while still holding the cork tightly, the bottle is slowly turned. You should be especially vigilant when squeezing the cork when it starts to come out of the bottle. After the gases have escaped through the crack, the plug can be removed.

There is also an exotic way to open champagne with a saber.

Uncorking a bottle in a restaurant

Sommelier’s corkscrew

In restaurants, bottles are uncorked according to the rules. Each type of wine (young, aged, white, red, dry, champagne, etc.) has its own rules. The uncorking technique is also regulated.

Some wines are opened a few hours before consumption, while others are opened directly in front of the visitor. Opening in advance is recommended for young red wine, which benefits from contact with air.Aged wines are uncorked at the last moment.

Professional sommeliers generally use a lever corkscrew, also called a sommelier knife. The sequence of uncorking a bottle with a cork stopper is as follows. The corkscrew is inserted into the cork and screwed in one turn. Then the sommelier lightly pulls the corkscrew and loosens the cork, after which he screws it deeply, but in such a way as not to punch through the cork. The cork is then pulled three-quarters out of the bottle without swinging, and the sommelier pulls it out with his fingers. The edge of the neck is wiped with a napkin, and the cork is inspected. The smell of the cork is also examined. An experienced sommelier can assess the state of the wine by the sight and smell of the cork.

Around the World

  • In Portugal, opening a bottle of wine is a ritual procedure. In restaurants, visitors are presented with a bottle cork so that they can see and smell.
  • The Alcotrade company (Zhashkov, Cherkasy region) filed a lawsuit against the Obolon joint-stock company (Kiev) for copying the bottle-on-bottle opening method allegedly invented by Alcotrade in its advertisement for the Torsida Obolon drink.Alcotrade stated that this method, demonstrated in their own Shake shake advertisement, is their intellectual property.
  • Beer Bottle Temple Created in Si Saket Province of Thailand [4]
  • Unique bottles are made for special occasions and for special people. Perhaps the most famous example is a bottle (imperial pint) made especially for Sir Winston Churchill, which was served to Churchill by his butler at 11 a.m. when he woke up.(1 imperial pint = 568.261485 milliliters) [5] .
  • Saber champagne is opened during lavish ceremonies. In English, this technique is called “sabrage” (from the English saber – saber).

Poetry

  • AS Pushkin: “How black thoughts will come to you, // Uncork a bottle of champagne // Or read” The Marriage of Figaro “”.
  • V. S. Vysotsky: “The wine has dignity, they say, healing, – // I decided to try it – I took a bottle, opened it … – // Suddenly something obscene came out from there: – // Maybe a green serpent, or maybe – crocodile!”

Humor

Stolichnaya bottle with a screw cap.In the 70s and 80s, such bottles were made only for export, and “disposable” foil caps were often placed on vodka bottles for the domestic market, which were not unscrewed, but removed.

  • Leonid Ilyich came out to Red Square to talk to the people. A drunkard is meeting him. Drunkard: “Hello, dear Leonid Ilyich!” Leonid Ilyich (with characteristic diction): “Hello. What’s up? Are you complaining about anything? ” Drunkard: “Everything is fine, Leonid Ilyich. Just one problem. Bottles with vodka do not open well! “Leonid Ilyich: “Okay, let’s discuss it at the Politburo.” Leonid Ilyich, deep in thought, returns to his office, takes out a bottle of vodka from the cabinet, unscrews the cork: “It’s strange … And what’s not opening here?” (The essence of the anecdote is that cheap vodkas were produced sealed with a foil cork with a “peak” for which the cap could be easily removed. it became quite inconvenient to open the bottle.Expensive vodkas have always been produced with twist-off lids).
  • Two freshmen argue about how to emphasize the word “uncork”. A fifth-year student approaches them. He listened, listened and said: “Everything is wrong. First, you need to hit the bottle on the bottom, and only then uncork it. ”

Lush palm tree crown made of plastic bottles. Making a palm tree from plastic bottles – selection of material, step-by-step assembly process

The material from which we will make our palm is found in every home.Save a few 2L water or beer containers in the colors we want – green and brown.

A palm tree made from plastic bottles creates an unusual harmony in the garden or on the site. It seems that you are relaxing on the seashore, and around the palm trees and sand)))). Today, dear friends, we will consider two interesting master classes on making a beautiful palm tree from plastic bottles with our own hands, the author of these master classes is Olga Akimova
and Safter Yeshilev
. It’s no secret that the plastic bottle won over many of us, because it is a pure material that is very light and simple to use.In addition, what is more important, it is a cheap material, which is of great importance for many. Crafts from bottles will last a very long time, because we all know that a bottle decomposes for a very long time. Therefore, making crafts from them, we cleanse the environment and create something interesting and beautiful for ourselves. If you suddenly have accumulated a lot of plastic bottles, then the time has come to use them for their intended purpose, which means you can make a beautiful palm tree out of them, for example.
Probably many of us want the summer to last longer on their site, that’s just the bottle palm tree that will become a decoration on the site and we will extend the summer period in our imagination.Olga says making a palm tree is very easy, even a beginner will cope with this task.

* Scissors.
* Metal rod.
* Drill.

Method for making palm trees from bottles:

Before manufacturing, it would be good to understand first what size we will make a palm tree and where we will install it. If you have children, make such a palm tree for them on the playground. Believe me, children really like such crafts and they are happy to play around them.
We take plastic bottles and make sure that they are all clean, if there are dirty ones then they need to be washed.Be sure to remove all labels from the bottles and then you can start making.

We take brown bottles and cut off the bottom of them to the height we need.

Now we need to make the branches of our palm tree, for this we take a green plastic bottle and cut it along almost the entire length and then cut it along the edge (as if we were making stripes).

Take a drill and start using it to make holes in each blank from a brown bottle. The holes should be the same as the diameter of the metal bar.

We have all done the blanks, proceed to the assembly of the palm tree, we will make the trunk. We take the brown bottles and bend their cloves from the outside, and then we begin to put them on the metal rod. In turn, we insert the bottle into the bottle, look like in the photo.

On top, when the trunk is ready, we put on the leaves that were made from a green bottle. We fix the leaves on the tree as follows: when the mode is the last bottle on the leaves, we leave the neck with the cork.in the cork we make a hole in the size of a metal rod and fit it tightly, it holds perfectly, no other fasteners are needed.
That’s it, the plastic bottle palm tree is ready. Look at what beauty Olga has turned out, and most importantly, such crafts will serve you for a very long time and they are not afraid of rain or frost.

Palm tree from plastic bottles with coconuts

Different palms are needed, different palms are important. Sasha got a slightly different, but also very interesting and beautiful palm tree with coconuts.Let’s also consider the process of making it, because someone will like this palm tree and someone else, everyone has different tastes.

To make a palm tree, we need:

* Green plastic bottles.
* Brown plastic bottles.
* Scissors.
* Metal rod.
* Drill.

Method of making palm trees with coconuts:

Let’s make the barrel first, take 20 brown beer bottles. So many bottles it took Sasha to make one palm tree 1 m.height.

Cut off the bottom of the bottle closer to the base. We then cut the bottle into five parts.

Now let’s make the bottom foliage from the green bottle. We cut off the bottom and cut it into 5 parts, you will need 3 such blanks.

Then cut out the foliage on it as shown in the photo.

Bend the foliage as shown in the photo.

This is how you should do it.

Take 2 liters.green plastic bottle.

We also cut off the bottom of it.

Cut almost the entire length into thin strips. The tips need to be sharpened.

Here’s a blank for making a palm tree.

We begin to collect the lower foliage on the iron rod. First, insert the blanks that are cut into strips.

Then we insert the blanks on which the foliage was cut.

We continue, we cut out from a 2 liter bottle of a makhrushka

These are the blanks that should turn out.

From a 1.5 liter bottle, there is also a makhrushka mode.

For the manufacture of palm branches, blanks from 1.5 liter and 2 liter bottles are required.

If you do not have a lot of green bottles, then transparent bottles can be painted with green paint.

Cut all bottles into strips.

We put caps on all bottles and drill 8 mm.

Bottle necks can be inserted between bottles in order to save bottles.

0.5 l. cut the bottles to size and insert them at the ends of the branches.

Here are our blanks before assembly, you can get to work.

First, we collect 1.5 liter bottles, and at the ends of the branches 2 liter bottles.

It remains to make coconuts, because we have a palm tree with coconuts. To do this, Sasha used old balls, obliged them with a thin wire so that later there was something to fix.

Paint them brown. When dry we hang them on a palm tree.

Instead of a trunk, we use an old waste pipe 15 and 2.5 meters high. We drill two 8 mm holes in it. Branches – wire rod 7 mm. 2 meters, 1 meter in each direction.

All the palm tree with coconuts is ready.

  • Flower pots – 10-12 pieces. The more pots, the taller the tree will be. The pots should be the same model but different sizes;
  • metal pipe;
  • pot with a plant.

How to make a palm tree with your own hands – in stages

We fix the metal pipe in the ground. This is the base for the trunk, and the trunk must be stable as a large plant pot will be planted on top of it.You can take a very long pipe and stick it deep into the ground, but it will be safer to concrete it.

Between the walls, you can lay some material, for example, tightly push the film, oilcloth, put sticks-spacers. All this is to fix the flowerpot in the pot.

Do-it-yourself palm tree turned out to be tall, beautiful and truly exotic.

What plants to use for homemade palm trees

Choose large plants with long leaves that resemble the leaves of real palms. There are many such plants – both indoor and outdoor.By the way, it is very useful for indoor plants to “live” outside in the summer – under the sun, in the fresh air. They will recover their health before the autumn cold.
Ferns – nephrolepis, davallia, asplenium, bracken, dwarf

Chlorophytum

This is the only one that can grow in our gardens.

So instead of throwing them away (thereby polluting the environment), you can make a lot of crafts out of them.

Crafts can be made with children or on their own. Them
and
you can decorate a house, garden or cottage.

One of these original handicrafts is a palm tree. Having created such a palm tree from plastic bottles, you can decorate any garden or cottage with it. She looks pretty
, and you don’t need to be a great specialist to make it.

Palm from plastic bottles for beginners

You will need:

Plastic bottles (preferably green and brown)

Scissors

Drill or awl

Metal rod, straight branch, or thin plastic tube.

* First, wash and remove the labels from all bottles.

1. Cut the brown plastic bottles in half, then zigzag the bottom half.

2. Cut the green bottles lengthwise to make several halves. Cut a fringe on both sides of each half.

3. Make a hole (with a drill or an awl) in the bottom of each of the brown halves. The hole should be exactly the thickness of the bar.

4. Take a rod (metal, wood or plastic) and place the brown bottle halves on top of it.

5. Green bottles (palm branches) can be attached to the top of the trunk with a thin wire, which is inserted into each branch and into the trunk, and its ends are twisted.

How to make a palm tree from plastic bottles

You will need:

2 liter plastic bottles

Scissors or utility knife

Wire

Plastic or wooden rod

Glue or tape.

Making a crown

1. Cut the plastic bottle in half (across). Leaves will be created from the top.

2. Cut the half of the bottle into strips up to the neck.

* You can also cut the bottle into 4 petals, and score each petal several times.

3. Take a wire and start stringing blanks from green bottles (palm leaves) on it.It is worth noting that you need to screw the lid on the very first blank, so you can fix the green leaf petiole with a knot. The same should be done with the last part of the bottle.

* The palm tree with about 6-7 leaves looks beautiful.

* The base of the leaves should have a long stalk for easier attachment of the leaves to the palm.

Making the trunk of a palm tree

1. Cut the bottom off the brown bottle, leaving almost the entire bottle intact.

2. Cut the bottle from bottom to top into 5 wide strips (see image).

3. Begin stringing the brown pieces onto a sturdy metal, plastic, or wood rod to create these palm trunks.

Putting together all the parts

Use glue or tape to attach the leaves to the trunk of the palm tree. It is advisable to distribute the leaves evenly to obtain a symmetrical crown.

Making crafts from ordinary plastic bottles can be a simple and inexpensive way to update the area near your home or on the playground. It takes a little time and imagination, and you can create anything that you can imagine out of this versatile material. You can, for example, make a banana tree. And so that you understand how to do this, we created a master class on a palm tree from plastic bottles unnecessary in the household quickly and simply with our own hands, it contains detailed step-by-step instructions and photo and video lessons.

Such a tree will serve as a wonderful decoration for a holiday for children or a theme party. The more plastic bottles you take to create one palm tree, the taller and more luxuriant it will turn out.

Making a palm tree from plastic bottles with our own hands in stages

To create a palm tree, we need the following materials:

  1. Plastic bottles of various sizes and colors
  2. Scissors
  3. Scotch tape
  4. Base for the future palm tree.Usually they take a metal rod.
  5. Frame for the future palm tree thick wire or metal tube.
  6. Styrofoam or artificial bananas
  7. Yellow paint
  8. Wire

Making the trunk of a palm tree:

1) In order to make the trunk of a palm tree, you need to take brown bottles of 1.5 liters 2 and 2.5. First you need to cut the bottle from the neck side by about a third. You will need the upper part, but do not rush to throw out the lower part – you can also make a barrel from it by analogy.

2) Cut the bottom of each bottle with a heated knife. To this section we will attach the frame of our palm tree.

It is necessary to cut the part of the bottle with the neck into 8 equal parts. It is necessary to cut from a wide edge to a narrow one.

Now we need to make these parts a pointed shape to look like a petal.

3) Bend the resulting petals to the outside – it will look like a blossoming flower.

Palm foliage:

1) In order for our banana tree to have leaves, you need to take bottles of green (preferably different shades), white and yellow. The more colors you use, the brighter the palm will look.

2) Cut off the edge of the neck and the base from the bottle. Cut the resulting blank from the bottom of the bottle towards the narrow part into 3 approximately equal parts, but not completely. Until the end of the bottle, about 3 cm should remain. We give the edges of each part a shape like a narrowed semicircular petal. we begin to gently bend these petals outward in the same way as did the trunk of the palm tree. The result is something vaguely reminiscent of a three-blade fan.Now we cut each resulting sheet from the edge to the middle. In the middle, you need to leave a little uncut space – about 2 cm.It looks like a fringe. The narrower the strips in width you make, the more magnificent the fringe will turn out, and hence the foliage of our palm tree.

3) Now the fringe strips need to be folded in different directions. 1-bend up, 2- leave it as it is, 3 – down. So the sheet becomes voluminous.

4) There are 2 ways to decorate the leaves. In the first case, we leave our blanks as they are, and in the second, the blanks need to be strung on a flexible wire to get long volumetric branches. In the second case, more bottles will be needed, but the palm tree will also acquire a luxurious crown.

Palm crown.

Take a bottle of dark brown color and cut it like a blank onto leaves – from top to bottom into thin strips. We collect the segments and wrap them inward.

Palm tree decoration.

Cut out blanks for bananas from foam plastic and paint them with yellow paint and carefully pass a thin wire through the upper part.

We collect the palm tree:

1) Take the palm tree frame prepared in advance. It can be a thick wire or a metal pipe. And we begin to put the finished barrel blanks on the frame with the neck down. We first put on larger blanks and begin to make up the parts as a designer. We compose until about 30 cm remains to the edge.Try to arrange the petals of each part in a checkerboard pattern. We fix the parts at the base with glue or tape.

2) Depending on which leaves you prefer to make, there are 2 ways of attaching 1-On the remaining empty upper part of the trunk, we begin to attach the branches of the palm tree. This is done in the same way as collecting the trunk. Do not forget to use details of different colors and arrange the leaves in a checkerboard pattern. 2 – we attach the cable with the leaves strung on it to the frame of the palm tree at the very top and fix each sheet with tape.

3) Install the crown – glue the blank to the edge of the frame with the neck down.

4) We tie artificial bananas on the branches of a palm tree

To secure our palm tree, we stick a metal pin about 30 cm deeper into the ground for stability (if you wish, you can fill it with concrete), but so that at least 40 sticks out of the ground – for stringing the trunk and put on our palm tree on top.

Now our plastic bottle palm is ready.

Birds from plastic bottles | DIY master class

Reading 2 min.

Owl

For the manufacture of such a bird, it is better to use brown plastic bottles. The owl’s feathers are short, but lush, so the edges of the plastic blanks need to be slightly scorched with a lighter. This will add texture to the craft.

The torso and head must be cut out of Styrofoam, placed on plastic tubes and secured to a wooden support. Then, moving from the bottom up, you need to fix the feathers on the screws. The eyes are made of white plastic and the pupils are made of disposable spoons. The toes are cut from a thin corrugated hose.

You can paint an owl with golden paint from a spray can.

Stork

White (milk) and brown plastic bottles are suitable for making a stork. For the wings, the blanks should be with a fringe, and for the body without it. On the neck, you need to cut strips from bottles and make a fringe on one side.

Two long plastic tubes are attached to a stable board. A ten-liter canister is located on them at an angle, with the neck up. Slightly curved scraps of a thin pipe are attached to the sides, and a larger diameter pipe must be fixed in the hole of the canister. The canister and wing sections are wrapped in a metal mesh. Plastic oval blanks are gradually fixed on them.

The stork’s head is made from an old ball and its beak is cut from a plastic bottle.

After manufacturing, you only need to paint the head with white paint and paint the eyes, and cover the beak and legs with red paint. The stork is impressive in size.

Flamingo

This bird has long legs, a thin, elongated neck and a large beak.Plastic bottles of any color are suitable for its manufacture. The body is a large canister, from the bottom of which the legs are attached – long thin tubes. Fingers are pieces of a corrugated hose. From the same hose you need to make a neck, passing it through a strong wire to give the neck the necessary bends. The head is cut from dense foam.

The craft should be painted in a soft pink color, and the beak in white and black tones. The bird’s eyes are made of beads.

These are the original decorations for a summer cottage can be made from waste material.

The largest bottle. Alcohol records

The culture of our country is inextricably linked with the acceptance of alcoholic and alcoholic beverages. The desire to have fun cannot be taken away from us, as well as a prerequisite for such fun – drinking.

Celebrating various holidays, the owners of the house, and often the guests themselves, count the amount of alcohol drunk with bottles. Without much explanation, it is clear what kind of bottles we are talking about, and what is its volume. However, there are bottles in the world whose sizes are not so easy to imagine.

One such bottle can hold as much of a heady drink as it would have to provide fun and good mood for a whole crowd. The TOP-10 includes:

The largest bottle of vodka

The volume of the world’s largest bottle of vodka is 200 liters! She came off the conveyors of the Polish company Chopin (Chopin), which produces exclusive drinks using special technologies.

The creation of Polish “winemakers” was included in the Guinness Book of Records. The huge bottle is filled with premium vodka made with potatoes. The release of a 200-liter container with a strong drink was timed to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the birth of the great Polish composer.

Largest wine container

The bottle holds 490 liters of drink (this equals 387 regular wine bottles). This wine bottle was presented by the Swiss company Kracher. One wooden cork, made entirely by hand from a large stump, cost the manufacturer $ 3,500.

Inside the mega-container, Grande Cuvee TBA NV No. 7 wine is poured. Naturally, such a masterpiece took its place in the Guinness Book of Records.

The largest bottle of beer

Australians have produced the world’s largest bottle of beer with a capacity of 348 liters! The circumference of the container is more than 2 meters. A great vessel for a large company – just in time to watch an interesting football match.

The largest bottle of whiskey

A unique container for Scotch whiskey was made by Czech glassmakers company Kavalierglass. The volume of the bottle is 228 liters, the height is 1m 70cm, and the weight is about 50 kg. The glassmakers are sure that their creation will be included in the Guinness Book of Records. In the meantime, the bottle has already been filled with first-class whiskey and set up near Edinburgh in the Edrington Group visitor center.

The largest bottle of ketchup

The old water tower, located in the immediate vicinity of the Hainz brand production facilities, has been transformed from an unsightly landscape element into a modern monument – a bottle of ketchup!
