Tanabata — Story of Two Star-crossed Lovers — Japan Suite
Today is a special day all over Japan where people celebrate Tanabata, the Star Festival. Tanabata is celebrated to commemorate the romantic story of two lovers represented by the stars Vega and Altair who are only allowed to meet each other once a year as long as the skies are clear. It is celebrated on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, which is July 7th in the modern calendar. Some places in Japan celebrate Tanabata on August 7th in accordance with the older Chinese calendar, which is where the legend originated. The most famous of all the Tanabata festivals is celebrated in Sendai on August 7th, but most of Japan recognizes Tanabata today (July 7th).
On Tanabata, people write wishes on small pieces of colored paper called tanzaku and hang them on bamboo trees. These become beautiful wish trees. On the following day, the decorated trees are floated on a river or in the ocean and burned as an offering. There are many celebrations all over Japan, which also include parades, food stalls, colorful decorations, and fireworks.
Tanabata originated from a Chinese legend called Qixi and was brought to Japan in the 8th century. This is the story of two lovers. Princess Orihime, the seamstress, wove beautiful clothes by the heavenly river, represented by the Milky Way. Because Orihime worked so hard weaving beautiful clothes, she became sad and despaired of ever finding love. Her father, who was a God of the heavens, loved her dearly and arranged for her to meet Hikoboshi, the cow herder who lived on the other side of the Milky Way. The two fell in love instantly and married. Their love and devotion was so deep that Orihime stopped weaving and Hikoboshi allowed his cows to wander the heavens.
Orihime’s father became angry and forbade the lovers to be together, but Orihime pleaded with him to allow them to stay. He loved his daughter, so he decreed that the two star-crossed lovers could meet once a year–on the 7th day of the 7th month if Orihime returned to her weaving. On the first day they were to be reunited, they found the river (Milky Way) to be too difficult to cross. Orihime became so despondent that a flock of magpies came and made a bridge for her. It is said that if it rains on Tanabata, the magpies will not come, and the two lovers must wait another year to be reunited, so Japanese always wish for good weather on Tanabata. There are many variations of this story, but this version is the most widely held.
We hope for clear skies on Tanabata so the lovers can always be reunited.
The Star Lovers
by Grace James
The Star Lovers is one of our Favorite Fairy Tales.
All you that are true lovers, I beseech you pray the gods for fair weather upon the seventh night of the seventh moon.
For patience’s sake and for dear love’s sake, pray, and be pitiful that upon that night there may be neither rain, nor hail, nor cloud, nor thunder, nor creeping mist.
Hear the sad tale of the Star Lovers and give them your prayers.
The Weaving Maiden was the daughter of a Deity of Light. Her dwelling was upon the shore of the Milky Way, which is the Bright River of Heaven. All the day long she sat at her loom and plied her shuttle, weaving the gay garments of the gods. Warp and woof, hour by hour the coloured web grew till it lay fold on fold piled at her feet. Still she never ceased her labour, for she was afraid. She had heard a saying:
“Sorrow, age-long sorrow, shall come upon the Weaving Maiden when she leaves her loom.”
So she laboured, and the gods had garments to spare. But she herself, poor maiden, was ill-clad;she recked nothing of her attire or of the jewels that her father gave her. She went barefoot, and let her hair hang down unconfined. Ever and anon a long lock fell upon the loom, and back she flung it over her shoulder. She did not play with the children of Heaven, or take her pleasure with celestial youths and maidens. She did not love or weep. She was neither glad nor sorry. She sat weaving, weaving . .. and wove her being into the many-coloured web.
Now her father, the Deity of Light, grew angry. He said, “Daughter, you weave too much.”
“It is my duty,” she said.
“At your age to talk of duty!” said her father. “Out upon you!”
“Wherefore are you displeased with me, my father?” she said, and her fingers plied the shuttle.
“Are you a stock or a stone, or a pale flower by the wayside?”
“Nay,” she said, “I am none of these.”
“Then leave your loom, my child, and live; take your pleasure, be as others are.”
“And wherefore should I be as others are?” she said.
“Never dare to question me. Come, will you leave your loom?”
She said, “Sorrow, age-long sorrow, shall come upon the Weaving Maiden when she leaves her loom.”
“A foolish saying,” cried her father, “not worthy of credence. What do we know of age-long sorrow? Are we not gods?” With that he took her shuttle from her hand gently, and covered the loom with a cloth. And he caused her to be very richly attired, and they put jewels upon her and garlanded her head with flowers of Paradise. And her father gave her for spouse the Herd Boy of Heaven, who tended his flocks upon the banks of the Bright River.
Now the Maiden was changed indeed. Her eyes were stars and her lips were ruddy. She went dancing and singing all the day. Long hours she played with the children of Heaven, and she took her pleasure with the celestial youths and maidens. Lightly she went; her feet were shod with silver. Her lover, the Herd Boy, held her by the hand. She laughed so that the very gods laughed with her, and High Heaven re-echoed with sounds of mirth. She was careless; little did she think of duty or of the garments of the gods. As for her loom, she never went near it from one moon’s end to another.
“I have my life to live,” she said; “I’ll weave it into a web no more.”
And the Herd Boy, her lover, clasped her in his arms. Her face was all tears and smiles, and she hid it on his breast. So she lived her life. But her father, the Deity of Light, was angry.
“It is too much,” he said. “Is the girl mad? She will become the laughing-stock of Heaven. Besides, who is to weave the new spring garments of the gods?”
Three times he warned his daughter.
Three times she laughed softly and shook her head.
“Your hand opened the door, my father,” she said, “but of a surety no hand either of god or of mortal can shut it.”
He said, “You shall find it otherwise to your cost.” And he banished the Herd Boy for ever and ever to the farther side of the Bright River. The magpies flew together, from far and near, and they spread their wings for a frail bridge across the river, and the Herd Boy went over by the frail bridge. And immediately the magpies flew away to the ends of the earth and the Weaving Maiden could not follow. She was the saddest thing in Heaven. Long, long she stood upon the shore, and held out her arms to the Herd Boy, who tended his oxen desolate and in tears. Long, long she lay and wept upon the sand. Long, long she brooded, looking on the ground.
She arose and went to her loom. She cast aside the cloth that covered it. She took her shuttle in her hand.
“Age-long sorrow,” she said, “age-long sorrow!” Presently she dropped the shuttle. “Ah,” she moaned, “the pain of it,” and she leaned her head against the loom.
But in a little while she said, “Yet I would not be as once I was. I did not love or weep, I was neither glad nor sorry. Now I love and I weep—I am glad, and I am sorry.”
Her tears fell like rain, but she took up the shuttle and laboured diligently, weaving the garments of the gods. Sometimes the web was grey with grief, sometimes it was rosy with dreams. The gods were fain to go strangely clad. The Maiden’s father, the Deity of Light, for once was well pleased.
“That is my good, diligent child,” he said. “Now you are quiet and happy.”
“The quiet of dark despair,” she said. “Happy! I am the saddest thing in Heaven.”
“I am sorry,” said the Deity of Light; “what shall I do?”
“Give me back my lover. ”
“Nay, child, that I cannot do. He is banished for ever and ever by the decree of a Deity, that cannot be broken.”
“I knew it,” she said.
“Yet something I can do. Listen. On the seventh day of the seventh moon, I will summon the magpies together from the ends of the earth, and they shall be a bridge over the Bright River of Heaven, so that the Weaving Maiden shall lightly cross to the waiting Herd Boy on the farther shore.”
So it was. On the seventh day of the seventh moon came the magpies from far and near. And they spread their wings for a frail bridge. And the Weaving Maiden went over by the frail bridge. Her eyes were like stars, and her heart like a bird in her bosom. And the Herd Boy was there to meet her upon the farther shore.
And so it is still, oh, true lovers—upon the seventh day of the seventh moon these two keep their tryst. Only if the rain falls with thunder and cloud and hail, and the Bright River of Heaven is swollen and swift, the magpies cannot make a bridge for the Weaving Maiden. Alack, the dreary time!
Therefore, true lovers, pray the gods for fair weather.

The Star Lovers – Asian and African studies blog
The 7th day of the 7th lunar month has long been the date of the Star Festival 七夕 in East Asia, traditionally known as Tanabata in Japan, and as Qixi – or more recently as the ‘Chinese Valentine’s Day’ – in China. It has always been a very popular festival celebrating the summer evening, and evoking the romantic legend of the star lovers who meet each other once a year by crossing the Magpie Bridge over the Milky Way.
Above left is the Dunhuang Star Atlas, the oldest known manuscript of a star chart dating to around AD 700. On the right-hand image the Magpie Bridge, which corresponds to the constellation of Cygnus (= Celestial Ford 天津), has been indicated by a green dotted line, and the Milky Way is indicated by two parallel dotted lines in blue (neither feature is marked on the original Star Atlas). The boy lover, known as Niulang (牛郎) in the Chinese folktale, was identified in his original position as Niu su yi (牛宿一), also known as β Capricorni or Dabih Major in Western astronomy. The girl, Zhinü (織女) has always been and still is associated with Vega since the creation of the Dunhuang Atlas. British Library, Stein Collection Or.8210/S.3326. International Dunhuang Project http://idp.bl.uk/
However, the Star Festival is not only for celebrating romance. We first explored the origins of this festival and related astronomical subjects in two previous blog posts in August 2014: ‘Tanabata (七夕) Star Festival’ – is it 7 July or 2 August 2014? (1) and (2). This year we concentrate on how the night of the 7th day of the 7th lunar month has had a dramatic impact on both the Chinese and Japanese literary traditions.

One of the most notable references to the night of the 7th day of the 7th lunar month in Chinese classical poetry is probably ‘The Song of Everlasting Regret (長恨歌)’ by Bai Juyi (白居易 772–846). The inspiration for Bai Juyi’s poem was the doomed love between Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty (唐玄宗帝 685-762) and his imperial consort Yang Guifei (楊貴妃 719-756). On the night of the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, they vowed to be together forever. However, there was to be no happy ending, as Yang Guifei was assassinated.

Despite the passage of many years, Emperor Xuanzong still pines for his dead lover, Yang Guifei. Although he cannot cross the border into the afterlife, he commissions his Daoist master to seek out Yang Guifei, for whom he is still longing but can no longer see, even in his dreams. Eventually the Daoist master manages to meet Yang Guifei in the afterlife, and she asks him to pass her message to Emperor Xuanzong, calling her Imperial lover to a romantic reunion in the stars. Even though there is no explicit mention of the star lovers in the lines below, the 7th day of the 7th lunar month indubitably references the love of the celestial couple.
“On the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, in the Hall of Longevity,
At midnight, when nobody is around, this is when we will make our secret pact.
In the heavens, we vow to be as two birds flying wingtip to wingtip,
On earth, we vow to be as two intertwined branches of a tree.”
“On the seventh day of the seventh lunar month”. Chinese text with Japanese annotations. Chōgonka Zushō 長恨歌圖抄. Published in Japan for Japanese readers, Enpō 5 . British Library, Or.74.cc.7
‘The Song of Everlasting Regret’ was already very well known among the Japanese when Murasaki Shikibu (紫式部), who was a lady-in-waiting at the court of the Empress Shōshi in the 11th century, wrote ‘The Tale of Genji (源氏物語)’, and it is clear that she consciously included many direct or indirect references to Bai Juyi’s poetry.
At the opening of the story, the relationship of Genji’s parents mirrors that of the Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei, as Genji’s father is the Emperor Kiritsubo and his mother is the most beloved one in his court. Genji’s mother dies young, leaving the Emperor in deep sorrow. While they were together, their favourite saying was “In the sky, as birds that share a wing. On earth, as trees that share a branch”, from the famous lines in ‘The Song of Everlasting Sorrow’. Day and night, he repeatedly bemoans the shortness of her life, making his own but an empty dream.
Chapter 41 of ‘The Tale of the Genji’ (源氏物語繪詞, Genji monogatari ekotoba), Naraehon manuscript, mid-17th century. British Library, Or.1287, f.43
In Chapter 41, Genji is left alone as his wife Lady Murasaki dies. In this chapter, the episode of the night of the 7th day of the 7th month is described as Tanabata, the day of the blessing of the star lovers. Genji is not in the mood for celebrating romance, and he keeps on thinking of his late wife and composes this poem: “They meet, these stars, in a world beyond the clouds. My tears but join the dews of the garden of parting.” Although the symbolic lines “In the sky, as birds that share a wing. On earth, as trees that share a branch” were not quoted explicitly in his poem, they are evoked implicitly through the whole chapter.

Konparu Zenchiku (金春善竹 1405-1470) composed a Noh play, ‘Yōkihi (楊貴妃)’, based on the latter part of ‘The Song of Everlasting Regret’. The key motifs in his Noh play were the tragic separations and broken promises as the lovers believed that nothing could force them to be parted. The lines about the 7th day of the 7th month, the star lovers, tree branches and birds are repeated at the close of the Noh play, leaving the audience filled with sorrow.

Lovers in classical literature were aware that they could not thwart fate and that human life is full of uncertainty, but perhaps they admired the star lovers in the night sky as a symbol of eternal love, unobtainable in the real world.

Star-crossed Lovers – Meaning and Usage
Like several other phrases, this phrase has been selected from Shakespeare’s famous play, Romeo and Juliet. This phrase is illustrating a couple whose bond of love is destined to fail. Its origin seems to be astrological, but it is best known for its association with Romeo and Juliet. In the prologue, chorus uses states, “A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life, / Whose misadventured piteous overthrows / Doth with their death bury their parents’ strife.” (Lines 6-8) The phrase is about Romeo and Juliet, whose love and affection is destined to end in a tragedy.
It refers to someone having bad luck, because the stars or heavens do not favor him. This phrase refers to those lovers whose relationship is destined to fail, because people who have a strong belief in astrology are of the belief that stars actually control the destiny of human beings. Simply, we can call this couple ill-fated. Star-crossed lovers present a perfect example of archetypes, of how two characters love each other, but are unable to continue due to societal and family conflicts, leading to a tragic end. Romeo and Juliet are also archetypal star-crossed lovers, who fall in love, but face numerous hardships because their families did not agree to this relationship.
We often see the use of this phrase in literature and movies. We find many examples of star-crossed lovers in novels and plays, such as Lancelot and Guinevere in King Arthur’s mystical tale Round Table, Heathcliff and Catherine from Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, and Lyla and Majnun from the classic love story Nizami Ganjavi. Its use in modern literature includes Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater in the movie Titanic. What we have learned from these examples is that a couple in everyday life, who experience a tragic end to their relationship, could be called star-crossed lovers.
The chorus uses this phrase in the sixth line of the prologue section in Romeo and Juliet. The chorus goes on to say that,
A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life,
Whose misadventured piteous overthrows
Doth with their death bury their parents’ strife.
The fearful passage of their death-marked love
And the continuance of their parents’ rage,…
What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend.
(Romeo and Juliet, Prologue, Lines 6-15)
Both the lovers, due to the unfortunate circumstance, predetermined fate, or uncontrollable situations, are destined to face failure in their love affair. This exactly happened to this romantic couple, Romeo and Juliet. When the order of the stars is shattered and “crossed” in Romeo and Juliet’s lives, they face this tragic situation, and their misfortune end their lives. Thus, we can say that destiny proves tragic for their lives.
As we know from the prologue of this play, which introduces the couple as “star-crossed,” it becomes clear that the couple’s relationship is to face hardships. This phrase has been used as a harbinger of doom and devastation for the couple. You have noticed towards its end how the couple is at the mercy of destiny/fate/bad luck/chance.
In the Prologue section, Chorus uses this phrase by introducing the couple to the Elizabethan audience. This shows that this term would definitely be familiar to the audience. The stars are a part of the chain of being, and if one part of the chain becomes upset, then chaos and disorder replaces the order. Thus, when lovers’ stars are misplaced, things go wrong and destiny alters the order and arrangement of things.

The most star-crossed cinematic lovers of all-time
Cinema is full of star-crossed lovers – true hearts that are kept apart by bad luck, misfortunes, or cosmic forces beyond their control. Rick and Ilsa from “Casablanca” really set the gold standard in this category – truly and deeply in love, but kept apart by her husband, his bar, World War II, and evil German soldiers. As time goes by, we are still dealing with doomed romances – some things never change as our favorite ill-fated cinematic couples remind us.

Romeo & Juliet from “Romeo and Juliet”
Arguably, the well-known pair of star-crossed lovers, the usual stuff keeps Romeo+ Juliet apart – family feuds, fatal duels, delayed messages, and an apothecary with extremely questionable ethics when it comes to poison sales. Never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo, and never was a more incompetent pair of friars than the two who forgot to tell Romeo of the death-faking plan.

Bella Swan is untroubled by her boyfriend’s blood-drinking and undead skin that glitters like a diamond, though you’d think she’d at least worry about why such an old dude keeps hanging out with high school girls. Despite the relationship leading to vampire wars, near-fatal pregnancies, and a werewolf falling in love with a newborn baby (yes, really!), they stay together. Unless that was just a dream, too!

Trinity kisses Neo as he comes back to life in the first movie, while Neo literally restarts her heart in the sequel. Along the way, robots, clones, Merovingians, and evil Joe Pantoliano try to keep them apart. Trinity dies tragically in the third movie, either from crashing onto a robot planet or because her brain exploded trying to keep track of the plot.

Monica and Quincy are two star athletes brought together and driven apart by the game of basketball. While it’s their common bond, it also leads to jealousy and often, geographical distance. Who knows what it would have been like if the WNBA had existed when Monica was younger, but injuries, international ball, and Tyra Banks all conspire to keep them apart, until it all comes down to a single game of one-on-one.

Fragmentary star tile with lovers
Iran, Ilkhanid period, 13th–14th century
Fritware painted with blue (cobalt) and luster (copper and silver) over white lead alkali glaze opacified with tin
23.2 cm (9 1/8 in.) diagonally, point to point.
Published: Sotheby Parke Bernet 1975, lot 122; Watson 1985, 146; McWilliams 2004, 5, 11, fig. 7.
This fragmentary tile, reassembled from four pieces, depicts a narrative scene closely related to those in contemporary and later manuscript paintings. Through an archway, a couple is shown in bed under a patterned cover. A tall candle in a plaited metal candlestick illuminates the interior of the room, and a similarly ornamented ewer appears further to the right. The partially visible bow and arrows likely belong to the man and indicate his princely activities. The fish at the bottom of the scene and the flowers sprouting above the couple create a dreamlike ambience. A figure, likely a servant, stands at left, perhaps outside the room. Bordering the scene, a Persian inscription, reserved in white on a blue ground, is partially legible. Starting at the break on the left, it reads,
. . . wings were broken.
. . . from the prince, felicity came to me.
Even if fate is not auspicious, give in to your destiny.
(. . . shikasta shud par u bāl.
. . . zi shāhzāda shudam saʿd.
Agar zamāna nasāzad tu bā zamāna bisā[z].)
Eight-pointed star tiles like this one were combined with other tiles of cruciform shape to create shimmering revetments for palaces and religious buildings. Although figural tiles were used in both secular and religious contexts, the intimate nature of the scene depicted here would have made this tile more appropriate for a palace interior.
See, in particular, the painting Gulnar Comes to Ardashir’s Pillow, from the “Great Mongol” Shāhnāma, Iran (probably Tabriz), 1330s, in which architectural details, furnishings, and the couple’s position are markedly similar to those on this tile. The painting is reproduced in Grabar and Blair 1980, 137.
We are grateful to Wheeler M. Thackston for this reading and transliteration.

Alina Zagitova, Mikhail Kolyada, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva at the “Figure Skating Lovers” show
The “Figure Skating Lovers” show unexpectedly became almost the coolest event of the first half of the season.
For the first time since February, Alina Zagitova performed with a full-fledged number on the ice, and secondly, for the sake of this event, the seven-time European champion, two-time world champion and simply the King (as Stanislav Konstantinova wrote on Instagram) Javier Fernandez flew to Moscow for this event. Thirdly – Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, Mikhail Kolyada, Dmitry Aliev, Evgenia Tarasova / Vladimir Morozov – and other stars.
And all this with the strictest security measures at the CSKA Arena. Even those who came together were asked to sit down separately, and Dmitriev Guberniev reminded about masks and social distance.
Yes, yes. Guberniev met with Alina again. Just a couple of days ago, he was interviewing the Olympic champion on Match TV. But this time, the presenter did nothing but shower the skater with compliments, not forgetting to remind in her signature patriotic style that she represents ROS-SI-Yu!
The first issue of Zagitova turned out to be indicative last year, which we have not seen so many times. The skater skated to the composition Outro of the M83 group. The production is dedicated to the deceased mother of the choreographer of the group Eteri Tutberidze Daniil Gleichengauz Lyudmila Shalashova.
Zagitova cleanly performed the triple lutz, but fell a few moments after the landed triple flip, and the second triple lutz turned out to be with a large under-rotation. But in the current situation, it is a little incorrect to engage in serious analysis of jumps – this is the first performance in 9 months. The main thing is that Alina is back on the ice. We believe that the next break will not be so long.
In the second part, Zagitova played the role of Esmeralda from the famous musical Notre Dame de Paris. It’s funny that in an interview with Sport24 in April 2019, the director of Khrustalny, Daniil Gleichengauz, said that Esmeralda performed by Alina shouldn’t be expected.
“This year I was filled with comments about choosing music from the golden fund of figure skating. Alina Zagitova will definitely have something new. There will be no Esmeralda, ”said Gleichengauz.
But that season has already passed. Apparently, the new promise did not apply. And Alina turned into a burning gypsy beauty. And this is one of the few premieres of the gala show – most of the skaters skated already proven numbers.
And this number turned out to be more successful than the first one. The Olympic champion has a clean triple lutz and flip.
“Alina, you are the queen,” – Guberniev greeted the skater. And the viewers who rose from their seats clearly agreed with the commentator.
Elizaveta Tuktamysheva , who lost to Khrustalnyy Anna Shcherbakova and Daria Usacheva at the Russian Cup in Sochi, performed with last year’s numbers – a stylish short program with Drumming Song and a burning free program Destination Calabria. The only thing missing was the ultra-s – instead of the triple axel Liza jumped a double. But Tuktamysheva’s expression covered all technical indulgences.
“Luxury on ice”, – Dmitry Guberniev spoke about Lisa before the first appearance of the Empress.
“Ice Wizard”, – the commentator met the skater after the end of the rental.
Evgeny Semenov, Sport24
The main guest star of the show Javier Fernandez in the first part was incredibly lyrical with Prometo, and in the second he showed his famous comic-heroic Super Javi.Xavi’s last official tournament (not counting the commercial Japan Open) was the 2019 European Championship, where the Spaniard said goodbye to sports. It’s been almost two years now, but Fernandez is still loved all over the world. So at the show in Moscow there were several fans with Spanish flags.

90,000 “I was once thrown on February 14th.” On the eve of Valentine’s Day, the stars shared their holiday stories
“I have always believed that it is necessary to support Russian holidays and traditions!” She declares.
– What was unforgettable that day?
– Time to spend with your family! To say how we all love each other is wonderful!
Olga Koroleva emphasizes that the celebration depends solely on your imagination and budget.
“You can have a romantic dinner in some very unusual place. Not just in a cafe, but somewhere in nature, invite musicians. This, of course, will be very cool! And if on a budget, then you can celebrate a holiday at home.Something to cook with your own hands. To be honest, I believe that the most important thing is to put your heart into the holidays. It is important how emotionally you invest in this holiday and can make it interesting, ”she reflects.
Valentine’s Day in Russia is considered by many to be a full-fledged holiday. In our country, it has been celebrated only since the 90s of the XX century.
Valentine’s Day is especially popular among young people. In fact, February 14 is another reason to tell each other about your feelings and make a pleasant surprise.About 80% of boys and girls celebrate February 14 as Valentine’s Day.
Despite this, there are those who are against the tradition of celebrating Valentine’s Day in Russia. Most religious denominations have a negative attitude towards Valentine’s Day. The Russian Orthodox Church is also negatively disposed towards him. And Catholics don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day either. In their opinion, it is based on a pagan holiday, during which promiscuous sexual relations and debauchery were encouraged. The Catholic Church does not host any festive services on February 14.
Ordinary Russians, especially young people, do not think about it, but simply celebrate a day dedicated to the most important feeling in the world – love. Moreover, in modern society there are not so many reasons for joy. Russian universities organize skits dedicated to Valentine’s Day. Lovers on February 14 exchange valentines and present their soulmates with cute gifts.
On Valentine’s Day in Russia, shops are overflowing with a variety of souvenirs with romantic symbols. Also on this day, it is customary to give each other cards, heart-shaped sweets and, of course, red roses.
Chapter Five. “A young man in love with the stars.”
“Print of the sky”
The stars are not engaged to anyone.
With no one! ..
And so beautiful!
They are waiting for a fan,
For him to take them
To their Venice, perfectly happy.
They come every night
To the window bars –
A thousand floors in the sky! ..
And give signals to lovers
In the seas of darkness,
Where they themselves drown.
But, girls, wait,
So that I die early in the morning,
I’ll kidnap you one by one
On a mare of fog.
Federico Garcia Lorca
Orange groves have bloomed hundreds of times since then. Hundreds of times the delicate stars of the Azahar flower faded under the Andalusian sun, and the fruits were filled with juices, and the languid August drove out of the dark heavenly depths flocks of dazzling lights.
A young man named Angel lived in a sultry coastal town. He was so handsome that even the most proud beauties could not take their eyes off him when they met. In the evenings, his quivering voice, the voice of the cante hondo singer, sounded over the gardens and rooftops of houses. All the girls of the city listened to Angel! They gave up sewing, forgot about dinner in the stove and about an imminent date with a loved one. They listened, and could not hear enough …
Young Amparo, the daughter of a wealthy mayor, fell in love with Angel. The first secret love tormented her heart, but Angel did not look at her even once.
At midnight he looked at the stars, at midnight he dreamed of the stars, and during the day only they occupied his thoughts, multiplied in his eyes that the colors of ripe olives. At night he saw star cities, where heavenly cante, quiet conversations and gentle laughter could be heard from high buildings.
When Angel turned the bitter melodies of Soleares into the sky , it seemed to him that the windows of tall houses were opening, and the inhabitants of star cities immediately fell silent.Like young Venetian fishermen, they lowered the thinnest silver nets from the windows, caught thousands of echoes, into which his young voice broke in the silence of the night.
– Look around, Angel, – his father told him.
– Get married, – said the mother.
– What am I looking for here, dear parents? – answered Angel. – Only the stars are good – girls with silver braids. I will take any of them as my wife! ..
And again, as it was getting dark, and the sweet sangria of sunset flowed over the horizon, handsome Angel walked along the rocky seashore, admired the stars trembling in the sky, trembling in the water.
Already the April air was filled with the delicate aroma of blooming oranges, and the girls put on their best outfits, and gypsy songs poured over the ground to the frenzied roar of a guitar – towards the summer grace.
Entered in the evening of Amparo into the fog of a reed field. There is dew on the skirt, there is dew on the boots. In the evening distance could be heard the crying of a mare. She seemed to be calling someone.
It is not a good omen to hear a mare crying in the fog.
At the edge of a green field, at a high cliff, the paths of Angel and Amparo converge. The young man eagerly caught all the reflections in the dark sky. Mist lay low over the sea, stars shone above it.
– Which one of you will be mine? – he shouted, and immediately heard a quiet rustle of grass nearby. I turned around.
A girl was standing nearby.
– I will become yours. I, Amparo!
– Why is your dress so sparkling, Amparo? In it you look like a star …
But no, an earthly girl stood in front of him.The hem is in dew. Trembling lips. In black braids – a high crest.
– How scared I am to look into your eyes, Angel! I see in them the fire of all the stars living in the sky!
“Stars,” the youth echoed. “I swear to you, they all know about my love. One of them is for me! But just … which one? ..
And, having said this, he made the wrong step. His foot slipped off the dewy grass, he flew like a stone from the cliff, straight onto the coastal cliffs.
“Oh Angel, Angel !.. ”
And the white hands of Amparo, stretched out into the darkness …
He fell and saw the stars, close and omnipotent. He fell and saw that the stars fell from the sky. They grabbed him by the wrists, by the ankles, pulled him up, and he got up. Scorching starfall woke up through his weightless body. And he continued to climb. Both the voices and the singing of the star cities were getting closer, closer …
Amparo saw Angel fall. She saw the stars fall from the sky, and a gray mare, like ashes, jumped out of the fog and carried the young man into the gloomy heights of the night sky. There, where cool spring stars blazed with unprecedented silver fire.
 Orange blossom.
Soleares – plural from solea – an old style of singing, a kind of “cante jondo”. Soleares is a sad cante form dedicated to feelings of longing and loneliness.
Orange remohon
Boil the eggs and soak the cod in water to remove excess salt.
Next, peel the cod from the skin, remove all bones and put in a frying pan. You need to fry it, like a beloved girl, over low heat until a golden crust appears, then remove from heat and cool. Peel the oranges, cut them into small wedges and place in the bottom of a deep bowl.
Add finely chopped onions and olives, then pour oil over the salad very slowly while stirring well.On the finished salad, you need to put slices of boiled eggs.
This dish pleases the stomach and relieves the pangs of unrequited love.
Classic Andalusian cuisine, most often prepared in the provinces of Granada, Cordoba and Jaén. The recipe comes from Valle de Lecrín, which means “Valley of Joy” in Arabic. This is the land of fishermen, olive and orange groves.
