About Diary for Girls with Upgraded Lock and Keys – Unicorn Journal Includes Adjustable Bracelet and Multi-Colored Push-Pen | Enjoy Both Lined and Blank Notebook Pages for Secret Writing and Drawing

Journaling is a powerful tool where young girls can safely express their thoughts and feelings. It’s proven that journal writing strengthens overall emotional health. Did you know… Journaling helps to reduce stress, manage change and overcome diversity. We threw in the cool pen and the stylish bracelet to remind her just how beautiful she is! If you give your diary to that special girl in your life we hope that you are giving her the gift of self-expression. Lisa McCartney: when she was nine, she locked up a book that no one else had permission to enter. She says she wrote about her problems without anyone telling her what to write or how to do it, if she can pass it on to other girls, then she’s all about it. Her hope is that every girl who receives one of our diaries has the same experience-a safe place to express herself emotionally and creatively without judgment or fear of anyone intruding.

Taliban says Afghan girls to return to schools ‘as soon as possible’

One month after seizing power and pledging a softer version of their previous regime, the Islamists have incrementally stripped away at Afghans’ freedoms.

The Taliban were notorious for their brutal, oppressive rule from 1996 to 2001, when women were largely barred from work and school, including being banned from leaving their homes unless accompanied by a male relative. Pixabay

The Taliban said on Tuesday Afghan girls will be allowed to return to school “as soon as possible”, after their movement faced shock and fury over their effective exclusion of women and girls from public life.

The hardliners’ spokesman meanwhile announced the remaining members of Afghanistan’s new all-male government, weeks after the militants seized Kabul in an offensive that shocked the world.

The Taliban were notorious for their brutal, oppressive rule from 1996 to 2001, when women were largely barred from work and school, including being banned from leaving their homes unless accompanied by a male relative.

One month after seizing power and pledging a softer version of their previous regime, the Islamists have incrementally stripped away at Afghans’ freedoms.

During the weekend, the education ministry issued a diktat ordering male teachers and students back to secondary school — but made no mention of the country’s women educators and girl pupils.

At a press conference in Kabul, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said of the return of girls to school: “We are finalising things… it will happen as soon as possible.” He added that “a safe learning environment” needed to be established beforehand.

    No female ministers

The Taliban announced their new leadership earlier in September, drawn up exclusively from loyalist ranks.

Announcing the final line-up on Tuesday, Mujahid made no reference to the now closed women’s affairs ministry. No female ministers were named.

The Taliban now face the colossal task of ruling Afghanistan, an aid-dependent country whose economic troubles have only deepened since the Islamists seized power and outside funding was frozen.

Many government employees have not been paid for months, with food prices soaring.

“We have the funds but need time to get the process working,” Mujahid said.

The Taliban have also slashed women’s access to work, with officials previously telling them to stay at home for their own security until segregation under the group’s restrictive interpretation of sharia law can be implemented.

While the country’s new rulers have not issued a formal policy outright banning women from working, directives by individual officials have amounted to their exclusion from the workplace.

The acting mayor of the capital Kabul has said any municipal jobs currently held by women would be filled by men.

Although still marginalised, Afghan women have fought for and gained basic rights in the past 20 years, becoming lawmakers, judges, pilots and police officers, though mostly limited to large cities.

Under the ousted US-backed government, hundreds of thousands of women entered the workforce — with many becoming their families’ sole breadwinners after becoming widowed, or when their husbands were maimed during decades of conflict.

An All-American Car and the Fearless Female Road-Trippers Who Drove It

    John Butte

“The first memory I have of hearing about the Bradford Model T Girls was when I was growing up, seeing a picture of my mom with the other girls in the Model T, and the photo was autographed by Henry Ford,” remembers John Butte, a retired Caterpillar executive living in Dunlap, Illinois. “My brothers and sisters and I had heard this story about our mom once staying in a jail cell overnight in Canada back in 1939, and we thought it was very comical. But I never really thought about it much.”

Butte had grown up on a farm in Bradford, Illinois, and knew the basic facts about the Bradford Model T Girls, or the Gypsy Coeds, as they were known—a group of young local women who road-tripped all over the country in the Thirties and Forties in a 1926 Model T. His mother was one of them, and so was his aunt. When his mother died, he wrote a paragraph on the Bradford Model T Girls for her obituary. Then, the strangest thing happened. “One of the descendants of another Bradford Model T Girl posted a response to the obituary online,” he remembers. It said, “The Gypsy Coeds are laughing again today together.” Intrigued, Butte began to reach out to other Gypsy Coed descendants. They’d all heard the same story, about these young women and their sprawling road trips in a car they called the Silver Streak, adventures that changed their lives forever.

This story originally appeared in Volume 6 of Road & Track.

Butte started collecting diaries and photographs. The more he learned, the wilder the story grew. These young women had met celebrities in Hollywood. They drove the car through Times Square and past the Capitol in Washington, D.C. They hit New Orleans and reached deep into Canada, on roads that were little more than game trails. They hit over 40 of the 48 states and broke every rule that young women of their era were supposed to follow.

“The first memory I have of hearing about the Bradford Model T Girls was when I was growing up, seeing a picture of my mom with the other girls in the Model T, and the photo was autographed by Henry Ford”

How did they do it? Why did nobody know this story, today? And did their 1926 Model T still exist?

Butte had heard a story that the women had befriended Henry Ford himself. So he and his wife, Carmen, ventured to the Benson Ford Research Center, home of the Ford archives in Dearborn, Michigan. While digging through a box of Henry Ford’s personal letters, they found a folder marked Bradford Model T Girls. “When I opened that folder,” Butte recalls, “I could not believe it. There were photos, letters, telegrams . . . . Every hair on the back of my neck stood up.”

He had stumbled upon a portal into the past, one that would lead him to the Silver Streak itself.

John Butte, whose mother and aunt were both Bradford Model T Girls, tracked down their 1926 Model T, the Silver Streak, and still owns it today.

    Marc Urbano

Picture Dorgan’s Café in downtown Bradford, an ice cream shop that, in small-town America circa 1934, sold anything a passerby might need: motor oil, sugar, taxi service, cigarettes, income tax advice, the “world’s finest whiskies.” This was the gathering spot for all of Bradford, population 1000, a farming community in the heart of America. The cafe was owned by Bill and Daisy Dorgan, whose daughter Darlene ran a beauty parlor out of the family home. One summer, almost certainly at a table in Dorgan’s Café, Darlene and her friends hatched a plan. It got nasty hot in Bradford in summer, and they were after cooler weather and fun. Darlene’s parents had bought her a 1926 Model T for $50. So they planned a trip to Devil’s Lake in Wisconsin. Five of them piled into the car—Darlene the oldest at 24, and Clare Breen the youngest at 18.

Even in 1934, the Model T was outdated. Ford had launched its successor, the Model A, seven years earlier. Darlene’s “Tin Lizzy” had electric start, but kept an old-time crank for backup. No roll-up windows. The drivetrain was the usual 177-cubic-inch inline-four matched to a grouchy planetary transmission. “With the girls and their luggage, food, can openers, spare clothing, etc., the car could hit 40 mph on a flat road,” Butte explains. The group had strict rules: No liquor, no tobacco, and while they met plenty of boys along the way, no dating. When they got home from Wisconsin, they had already started planning the next trip. In the summer of 1935, they took a shorter jaunt around Illinois. The following year they put down miles, driving back to Wisconsin, on to Chicago, around Lake Michigan. They even took a ferry across the lake on the way home. In 1937, six Bradford women shoehorned into the tiny T. They drove all the way to Callander, Canada, to see the famous “Dionne Quints,” five identical twins whose birth made worldwide news and who were now put on display for tourists, as if they were in a zoo.

Everywhere the Gypsy Coeds went, they drew intense interest. Articles about the girls appeared in small-town papers when the Model T passed through. They became the talk of Bradford itself. “The story goes,” says Butte, “that some of the ‘old biddies’ thought it was terrible that their parents let them do this, that they’d get raped, that they’d be killed. After the first trip, and the second, they thought, okay, maybe you can go do this. In fact, maybe it is becoming something rather special.”

    The “Gypsy Coeds”

On the trail of the Bradford Model T Girls—the trips, the highlights, the legacy.

Imagine road-tripping many thousands of miles with six or seven of your friends, in a car only big enough for five, with no GPS, no cellphones, no windows, on mostly unpaved roads with almost no suspension and tires that flattened if you looked at them wrong. No hotels. No Advil. All of which explains why the Bradford Model T Girls’ accomplishments were beyond miraculous—for young women of their day, or for anybody. This map shows the routes of the seven major trips they took between 1934 and 1941 in the Silver Streak, a 1926 Model T with a roof made out of recycled awning canvas and graffiti all over the body. While the girls took two shorter trips in 1935 and 1942, these are the drives that made them famous.

The Bradford Model T Girls slept outdoors. When it rained, they improvised shelter. They could change flat tires and fix minor mechanical issues. Somewhere along the line, Darlene Dorgan painted her Model T silver, and the car took on its nickname: the Silver Streak. The girls and the people they met scrawled messages all over the Ford—“Lizzy Labeling,” a fad of the day.

In 1938, Darlene and her friends were camping in northern Wisconsin when they learned that, in a few days, Henry Ford was turning 75. So they pointed the Silver Streak east toward Dearborn to wish him a happy birthday. “That,” says Butte, “is when the story got bigger than the girls themselves.”

Within weeks of his mother’s death in 2011, Butte had amassed piles of documents and photographs. He began to organize a historical narrative, cataloging where and when the Gypsy Coeds went and what had occurred on each adventure. Then he started to hunt for the Model T itself.

“I found this page on the Internet with a picture of the Silver Streak, and it said it was being driven down a street in Portland, Oregon, by someone named Becky,” he recalls. “I had no idea who Becky was. But looking at the car, I knew it was the Silver Streak.” The page referenced a vintage car broker, so Butte called the organization. The broker said, yeah, he knew about the car. Becky was the daughter of Darlene Dorgan. She had asked the broker years earlier to help sell the Silver Streak, and even got an offer from a guy in England. But she bailed out at the last minute, sentimental about her mother’s car. “Do you think she would sell it now?” Butte asked.

“You never know until you make an offer,” the broker answered.

Today the Silver Streak wears its ramshackle luggage and brushed-on mottos with pride, as it did on the Gypsy Coeds’ last ride.

    Marc Urbano

Up until then, Butte had not seriously considered buying the car. He just wanted to find out if it had survived, and if someone was taking care of it. But almost on a whim, he made an offer under the condition that the car still ran, and that it still looked like it did when it finished its last trip in 1942, all its Lizzy Labeling intact.

When Becky learned that a buyer was interested—that he was the son of a Bradford Model T Girl, and that he wanted to bring the car back to its home in Illinois—she agreed to Butte’s offer. The day the car rolled off a trailer in Butte’s driveway in 2012, he and his wife felt goosebumps. The vehicle needed work. The fins on the radiator had rusted and fallen off. The coil boxes were weak. But the old car ran. Butte found himself wondering: How do you even drive a Model T?

On July 31st, 1938, the Bradford Model T Girls arrived in Dearborn, determined to meet Henry Ford. One of the women, Winnie Swearingen, later told Butte the story: “We were driving around and finally pulled in at a gate that was chained and locked. We were just sitting there trying to figure out what we were going to do next. There were no guards at the gate, no one but us. That’s when Mr. Dahlinger drove up and asked what was going on and if he could help.” Ray Dahlinger was one of Henry Ford’s right-hand men.

In 1938, the Bradford Model T Girls motored halfway across the country to wish a happy 75th birthday to Henry Ford, shown at right.

    John Butte

“Okay, follow me,” Dahlinger said. The next thing these young women knew, they were meeting Henry Ford himself, who was intensely interested in their car. A cameraman showed up and snapped some photos. Sandwiches magically appeared. When Ford asked where the women were staying that night, they told him they had no idea. So he put them up in a cottage with a bathroom. From then on, everywhere the Bradford Model T Girls went throughout the U.S., they could count on mechanical assistance from Ford dealerships and a red carpet at Ford events. When the road-trippers returned home to Bradford, they had become hometown heroes.

When the road-trippers returned home to Bradford, they had become hometown heroes.

In 1939, Butte’s mother, Regina Fennell, 20, joined the Bradford Model T Girls in time for their most ambitious venture yet. Darlene and her friends drove across the border to Quebec, where a small-town mayor and the local sheriff let them sleep in a jail cell to escape a squall. From there they hit the 1939 New York World’s Fair, with full backstage access to the Ford Motor Company exhibit. They traveled to Washington and had their photo taken with the Silver Streak in front of the Capitol.

To preserve the Silver Streak as it appeared in the early Forties, Butte has never washed the car.

    Marc Urbano

The following year, they motored through the Wild West to Hollywood, where they visited movie studios and had the Silver Streak autographed by actors Don Ameche and Bill “Bojangles” Robinson. The Los Angeles Times ran a story with the headline, “And They Motored Clear from Illinois!” They headed to San Francisco, where they attended the 1940 Golden Gate International Exposition as guests of the Ford Motor Company.

By 1941, the Bradford Model T Girls were becoming a phenomenon. When they rode through Atlanta en route to New Orleans, the Atlanta Constitution published a story with a photo: “Six Femmes and a Ford.” The paper described how a “completely collegiate flivver loaded to the gills with seven suitcases, four five-gallon oil cans, two steamer trunks, five quilts, eight coats, a bushel of peaches, two boxes of plums, one cake, three pots and a frying pan, salt and pepper shaker made out of a corn cob pipe, 11 extra brake bands, two pieces of string, 39 hairpins and six girls drove up beside the Constitution building and parked on a yellow line.” From there they headed for New York, then all the way to Dearborn to see Mr. Ford again.

The hand-painted graffiti scattered across the Model T is an inextricable part of its charm.

    Marc Urbano

There was one shorter trip in 1942, but World War II, with its gas and tire rations, ended the young women’s adventures. The Bradford Model T Girls grew up and went their separate ways. But they remained in touch, with frequent reunions and photographs and luncheons. Miraculously, their Silver Streak survived.

Labor Day, 2012. Using YouTube, John Butte had taught himself to drive the old Model T, but he had hardly mastered the mysterious machine. He had fixed it up mechanically but left all the patina in place. He would not even wash the car for fear that some paint would come off, instead using a leaf blower and feather duster to clean it. He decided to enter the Ford in Bradford’s Labor Day Parade, towing it some 30 miles from his home. On that day, he sat in the driver’s seat, with his wife, Carmen, next to him. In back sat the last two living Bradford Model T Girls: Winnie Swearingen Hays and Helen Fuertges Hickey, both over 90 years old.

This 1926 Model T was old-fashioned and rudimentary even at the time of the girls’ first voyage  in 1934.

    Marc Urbano

The controls of a Model T barely correspond to modern cars. Butte had to learn to drive all over again.

    Marc Urbano

Butte was nervous. What if he stalled the car and could not get it started again? What if he got a flat? It was hot and humid. Who would help him get these women out of his car safely? “We were in the car and I had it shut off,” he remembers. All around, the parade was beginning and the crowds were swarming. “They said, okay, it’s time for you to start moving. I choked the engine a little bit, hit the starter, and the engine came to life. Off we went, and we had zero problems. It was such a triumphant feeling, to be back in Bradford with this car.” He thought of the line one of the Bradford Girls’ descendants had posted under his mother’s obituary, not two years earlier. The Gypsy Coeds are laughing again today together.

Butte has driven the Silver Streak in every Bradford Labor Day Parade since. The last surviving Gypsy Coed, Winnie Swearingen Hays, is 103. The story of these enterprising, adventurous women won’t be forgotten: Darlene’s Silver Streak and The Bradford Model T Girls, by John G. Butte, is available wherever books are sold.

90,000 How to start writing a personal diary for girls. How to keep a personal diary! Why keep a personal diary

As a child, almost everyone kept diaries. True, I cannot say that the boys also had secret notebooks, but almost every girl had her own notebook or notebook with the coveted lock and the inscription “Personal!” All secrets and all experiences were recorded there: tears of unrequited love, joy from a fleeting glance and constant complaints of absolute misunderstanding on the part of parents.Children grew up and gradually transferred their habits of describing their lives and their thoughts from paper to the World Wide Web with only one difference – we wrote diaries exclusively for ourselves, in order to then re-read and remember those feelings, understand and find the reasons for the present in the past, but web diaries are for general reading.

Writing just became uninteresting for oneself, because I want to see a response, to feel that your thoughts coincide with the thoughts of tens, hundreds, and maybe thousands of people. It’s nice, and writing just like that into the void, without getting a positive feedback, becomes uninteresting. But in fact, keeping closed diaries solely for yourself can greatly help you when making important decisions. Many people remember either only good or only bad, and this is a rather one-sided point of view, which interferes with objectively (as far as it is possible for a person) to assess the situation.

The creators of the electronic version of the Day One diary shared their thoughts on why you should keep such closed diaries, and how to do it correctly.

There have already been several publications on Lifehacker on the topic of keeping personal diaries, no matter if it is a paper or digital version – “”, “” and “”. And if you are really interested in this topic, I recommend reading these articles.

Now let’s go directly to the tips from the creators.

As mentioned above, the main problem in keeping such closed diaries is the question “What should I write there ?!”.

    Intimate Thoughts

Writing very personal, intimate, one might even say intimate thoughts is the basis for keeping such a diary. When you write down all your experiences, be it anger, joy, longing, disappointment, love, passion, you realize all this more deeply again when you write down your feelings on paper. And then, rereading all this in a few days, months or years, you can rethink all those emotions and understand why you made this or that decision, you can see how you evolved and developed as a person.

Things or events that influenced your decisions

It is also a good idea to write excerpts from your favorite articles, quotes, books or ideas in your journal. And then develop your thought, writing down all your thoughts in a diary. After all, it is not the articles, quotes or books themselves that are important, but the impact they have on you.

    Targets

If you publish your list of goals for the year on your personal blog or on social networks, why not do the same in your personal diary? These do not have to be very important and long-term goals. You can also write down smaller, current goals that you would like to achieve. You can write accompanying comments to them, and then look through them and note for yourself what you managed to achieve from what was planned, what was all this accompanied, and, if something did not work out, why exactly happened one way or another? This is a good way to understand where you have been, what level you are now and where you are going to move.

Impressions from books read, films watched and music listened to

Books and films affect our desires and actions much more than we think. Writing mini-reviews of books you read and movies you watch is a good way to rethink the information you received and highlight the most important points for yourself. This applies not only to educational books, but also to fiction, which sometimes affects us much more than another book about the smart.

This kind of cataloging is useful not only in this. You can recommend something new and interesting to your friends, or by reviewing the notes, decide whether to watch the movie or read the book again.

    Little joyful moments in life

“Dear Diary, Today was an incredible day!” – where else to write this, if not in a personal journal? In fact, it is from such moments, joyful and not very, that our life is formed, and if it seems to you that such records do not carry any meaning, then over time it is these records that will be of greatest value to you. They will remind us how good it was with someone and why we spent so much time together then. They will remind us of who we were and who we are, and why everything happened this way and not otherwise. And they also warn us against making the wrong decision on emotions, when blood pounds in our temples, fists clench and we only want one thing – to destroy everything and send everyone to hell, and then collect the pieces of our life piece by piece.

Favorite dishes or dishes that impressed you

Just a few lines about something new, just to repeat the order later or, perhaps, find a recipe for the dish you like.

    Visited places

Let these be short traveller’s notes that mark their first impressions of a new place. You can add geotags and photographs there, and then these records will remind you why traveling is so great, and why it is worth coming back (or never again) to this city.

You can write down anything you want in your personal diary, therefore, rather, it is more difficult to decide not what to write there, but which entries should be abstained from. You shouldn’t turn it into a dump of junk and write down how many new friends you have on social networks. These should be things that are truly dear to your heart and that help you to live meaningfully, without missing a single moment. And for a landfill, you can leave social networks, which are already filled with incomprehensible garbage like numerous selfies, photos of meals and strange statuses from one phrase;)

Did you have a personal diary? If so, do you still lead it and what did you record there?

Keeping a personal diary is characteristic not only of adolescent girls going through a transitional age crisis, but also of adults who intend to understand themselves.A diary is a physically existing corner of the human soul, carefully keeping the thoughts, ideas and emotions of its owner. If you are thinking about establishing a dialogue with yourself, it will be useful for you to learn how to keep a personal diary for your benefit.

Why do I need a diary

A personal diary is a great way to sort out your feelings and experiences, calm and order your mind and find the root of problems. Transferring emotions to paper, you can, as it were, look at a particular situation from the outside, rethink something and, possibly, change your point of view on some life events.Keeping diary entries and then rereading them is one of the best ways for introspection, reflection, and introspection. Written visualization of your fears, desires, hidden thoughts and true feelings will help you find inner harmony.

A diary can be an outlet for a lonely person. If you do not have a close friend to whom you can bare your soul and to whom you can safely give out your secrets, the diary will be a great silent replacement. Of course, communication in this case will be one-sided, but the main thing is to speak out.It is also very useful to keep a personal diary for hot-tempered people prone to aggression, or those who are prone to sadness and sadness – they will be able to leave their negative emotions on paper and not carry them into real life.

    Diary view

If you want to start keeping a personal journal, the first step is to decide which one you need. Will it be just a chaotic container of your thoughts and reasoning, or a thematic collection? If you stopped at the first option, then write on a whim, by inspiration, everything that comes to mind, from the description of dreams and reflections on the meaning of all life in the Universe and ending with a reminder of going to the doctor and a sketch of the desired dress. If you want to make a thematic diary, then think carefully about its focus. So, for example, it can be of the following types: a gratitude diary, a holiday diary, an idea diary, a child’s upbringing diary, or a transformation diary.

In a gratitude journal, write down the things for which you want to thank the world. For example, today you are grateful to life for a successful deal, yesterday you thanked fate for the smile of a handsome stranger on the subway, and globally you say thank you to the world for the good health of your parents.

A personal diary can be thematic: a gratitude diary, an ideas diary, a holiday diary, etc.

A holiday diary is needed to store travel impressions. Write in it what interesting places you visited, what nice people you met and what unusual dishes you tried.

Write down any ideas that come to mind in your idea diary
. These can be ideas for renovating an apartment or a new hairstyle, sharp observations for your upcoming book, or ideas for improving your workflow. In addition, you can write down ideas of any inventions, including fantastic ones. And let the invention remain only on paper and will never be created – such exercises perfectly develop imagination and train creative thinking.

In the parenting diary, you can record the time and dates of the first achievements, steps and words of your children, their curious and funny statements, their academic or creative success. Then, many years later, they themselves will be very interested to know how they developed and learned the world.

In the transformation diary, record what you plan to change. For example, finding a new job, getting into a dance class, making peace with a friend with whom the relationship went wrong. This type of diary will help you track changes in your life, analyze how long it takes you to decide on something new. In addition, the transformation diary is great for raising self-esteem – visual confirmation that you are not sitting still, but actively moving towards your goals and achieving them, strengthens self-confidence.

    Place and Time

Straightforward self-talk requires a certain atmosphere. It is difficult to be truly sincere, even with a piece of paper, on public transport or in the workplace surrounded by colleagues. For recordings, it is best to choose a calm and quiet environment. It is best to be completely alone at this moment so that you can focus on yourself and your feelings. For example, you can write in the evening after work, sitting on the couch under a cozy blanket, or in the morning, sitting in the kitchen with a cup of coffee. The place and time of creating a personal diary entry may vary depending on your mood. The main thing is that you feel as comfortable, safe and relaxed as possible.

    Cover and page design

A personal diary is a purely intimate thing, so its design depends solely on your preferences. You can buy a bright and colorful large notebook with a beautiful ornament at a stationery store, or you can buy a simple notebook and decorate it yourself. To design an elegant cover with your own hands, you will need colored pencils, felt-tip pens or watercolor paint, self-adhesive colored paper, various ribbons and other decorations. On the first page of your diary, you can leave information about the owner – name, date of birth, interests and other data that you see fit. Subsequent pages of the personal diary can be decorated with colorful stickers, interesting sketches and pictures.

    Storage space

Before you start keeping your personal diary, you need to seriously think about where to keep it.Do you have a place in your house where you can safely leave a notebook, the pages of which store information that is not intended for others? Most often, personal diaries are kept in a laundry drawer, on a bed under a pillow, or in the farthest corner of a wardrobe. For greater reliability, you can purchase a diary with a lock – even if someone finds it, there is no way to get to the contents without a key.

An alternative is to carry the diary with you. So the treasured notebook will always be at your side, and you will know for sure that it did not fall into the wrong hands. In addition, you can record at any time as soon as it finds inspiration on you.

In order for keeping a personal diary to have a beneficial psychotherapeutic effect on you and actually help resolve your internal conflicts, you need to follow some simple rules.

    • Only write if you really want to. Do not force yourself to describe the events of each day that has passed. Keeping a journal should be fun.
    • Be honest. It makes no sense to keep a lie in a diary, play a lie or hide anything. A personal diary should know everything about you, even what you yourself would not like to know about yourself. Imagine that the sheet of paper in front of you is a doctor. If you convey to him the wrong information about your state of health, then the treatment will not give the desired result. It is the same here: if you write only thoughts pleasing to yourself and sweep aside all the bad things that you do not like about yourself (for example, envy of a work colleague or resentment against a loved one), you will not have to wait for the healing of your soul.Don’t be afraid to admit to yourself even the worst.
    • Ignore syntax, punctuation and spelling when writing. Correcting mistakes and typos can interfere with the flow of your thoughts and throw off your mood.
    • Re-read the entries periodically. This will help you understand how you, your opinions and judgments change over time.

A note-book launched by the time will save not only nerves, but also money. Keeping a personal journal is like talking to an attentive psychologist. With the help of a diary, you can get to know yourself better, set life priorities and outline plans for the future.

Keeping a personal journal helps you organize your thoughts, desires and needs. Psychologists agree that this is a great way of self-discovery. But not everyone understands how to keep a personal diary. Some confuse it with a weekly, others consider it a frivolous child’s play. In fact, it can become a tool in building a personality, a place where you can speak, be heard and understood. After all, the most important thing is to learn to understand yourself. There are some simple guidelines on how to make the process of keeping a diary convenient and not burdensome.

    1. Choose a convenient format.

Someone is more accustomed to writing by hand, others will prefer an electronic text editor, and still others will be interested in online resources that offer free storage of secrets. The format does not matter much, the main thing is that it is convenient. Many people are interested in how beautiful it is to keep a personal diary.Creativity in this matter is encouraged.

This is the very place where you can draw in the fields, use colored pens, paints, express not only in writing, but also graphically. For example, you can characterize the day with an emoticon (sad, smiling, laughing, in love, etc.), a picture from the Internet, or a real photo taken on that day. Next, describe what happened in words.

But you don’t have to be too sophisticated. Keeping a diary can be reduced exclusively to a verbal format. It is advisable to highlight dates or important events / emotions so that you can easily find them when you need to re-read the entries.

    2. Be honest.

The main rule is honesty! Why keep a diary if it contains garbled data? The meaning of a personal diary is to say exciting things, to point out to yourself the strengths and weaknesses, to try to be as impartial and impartial as possible. You can try to consider the situation from the outside, assess your behavior.

One should not be afraid to admit bad deeds. Some situations and thoughts will cause shame, disgust, and embarrassment when describing them. But that is precisely why they need to be spoken, to understand where they came from and what causes them. The diary is a hiding place of secrets, closed to prying eyes, here you can speak honestly and openly. To do this comfortably, it is enough to take care of data confidentiality. To do this, you can put a password on the file or safely hide the paper version.

    3.Determine the “interlocutor”.

People refuse to keep a personal diary because they cannot conduct impersonal communication. If it is difficult to simply describe what happened, you can choose a mental interlocutor. How to manage your own, it’s up to you. Someone prefers to refer specifically to the diary, others communicate with God in this way, others write to deceased relatives, as a rule, to one of the parents, or to deceased friends. This gives the impression of real communication. You can address yourself, up to the use of your name, as if discussing yourself from the outside. For example: “Masha, today you were at your best, but it upset me how you behaved with your best friend.”

    4. Execution cannot be pardoned.

You cannot reproach yourself for bad deeds, scare yourself with punishments. Everyone has the right to make mistakes. You need to allow yourself to admit them. How can you keep a diary so you don’t turn it into a conviction? We must once again recall the rule of impartiality and objectivity. If a situation has occurred in life in which a person did not behave the way he would like or the behavior caused regret, you need to figure out what motivated him at that moment, why he did exactly that.If the situation has led to undesirable consequences, you must try to neutralize or mitigate them. This approach is more effective than self-criticism. There is also room for praise. Achievements and happy moments will adorn the memoirs.

    5. Emotions are more important than events

Starting to keep a diary, you need to remember that life events only reflect the inner atmosphere. Describing what happened during the day, it is imperative to give him an emotional coloring, to show your attitude. Impartiality manifests itself during analysis, but first you need to give vent to feelings. You are allowed to be angry, hate, feel sorry for yourself, and be weak. This will help you to see exactly what life situations and actions cause these emotions and eradicate them.

    6. Do not force yourself to take notes.

If there is nothing to talk about or there is no desire to write today, you should not do it forcibly. If there was a set of rules on how to keep a diary correctly, this would be at the very beginning. Keeping a personal diary is a voluntary confession, when thoughts and emotions cannot be kept in oneself and you want to throw them out.If the need for this is not felt, you can throw the revelations for several days or even weeks.

    7. Corporate identity.

Thinking about how to keep a personal diary, people think that they do not have something to write, which is completely unnecessary here. This is a personal territory, where they do not scold for grammatical and spelling mistakes, slang, invented words are allowed here. The more personalized the diary is, the better.

    8. Comments from the future.

If the diary is kept in electronic form, you can periodically go back several months or years ago and comment on your entries. This can be done in parentheses, highlighting the statement in a different color. It is important not to correct what has already been written, but simply to supplement it based on experience. For example, having left a record in May that a person has lost faith in and will never fall in love again, in July he can add a note with the note “how wrong I was”. This is part of working on your own, a visual way of dealing with thinking.

    9. Online blog.

You can keep an online diary in blog format. It will be difficult to name it personally, because it will become public, but other people will be able to comment on the recordings, give advice, share similar experiences. It is possible that ill-wishers will appear, ready to condemn.

There are resources on the Internet where you can start keeping a personal diary with or without publication. That is, it is stored on the server, to which there is always access, but no one else will see it except the author. The advantages of this option are available 24/7 from any device. Some sites offer additional tools for conveniently maintaining personal records – individual design, text formatting.

    10. Reread the diary.

How to start keeping a diary is now clear. But it is also important to re-read it periodically. This is especially necessary when situations arise in life that have already occurred. Then writing will help you avoid repeating old mistakes. Sometimes it’s just interesting to read the story of your own life. You can analyze your growth, or, conversely, understand when there was a deviation from the planned life course.

Remember that there are no rules for keeping a personal journal. This is a person’s personal space, his world, in which he is a storyteller and a reader at the same time. It should be useful, calm, relax, help get rid of the load, make you happy.

The article will tell you how to properly keep a personal diary and in what ways you can decorate it.

A personal diary is an obligatory thing not only for an adult, but also for a teenage girl. This is a way to express your thoughts, draw conclusions and understand everything that is happening in your head and around.

What topics can be identified in a child’s personal diary:

    • “Me and my family”
      – describe all family members, their qualities and traits, write why the child loves them.
    • “Me and my friends”
      – list all close and best friends, list all the positive qualities and history of acquaintance.
    • “My achievements”
      – here you can list all your victories, winnings in competitions and personal achievements, talents, skills, abilities.
    • “My Dreams”
      – here you should list what you dream about, what you want to achieve in life and what gifts you dream about.
    • “My hobbies”
      – in this topic you should list your hobbies: sports, music, drawing, poetry, collecting.
    • “Favorite Movies”
(as well as music, cartoons, books, writers, performers and much more, depending on what the child likes).

Video: “How to start keeping a personal diary?”

Keeping your own diary is fraught with many advantages. We hear about this often. Our friends and acquaintances recommend us to keep a diary. The Internet is replete with articles on the benefits of introspection and keeping personal diaries. In feature films, the diaries of the main characters are now and then flashed – and a desire to do something similar lights up in us.

For some, this can be the key to self-discipline, the ability to let off steam and get to know yourself better. Someone may be interested in creating a story of their own life and leaving it as a legacy to their descendants.

It does not matter how, where and. It is enough to have the desire to do it. However, this desire often disappears, as soon as we begin. It happens that a person can sit for hours on the first page – and still does not understand what he could write about. How can you overcome this barrier of indecision? What needs to be done so that thoughts come to mind on their own? How to start keeping a personal diary so that it really helps to change internally and see the reasons for your successes and failures?

How to start keeping a personal journal if you are not a writer?

Creating a diary for a person who has never done something like this is not an easy task.Yes, you can buy a beautiful notebook, take a fountain pen, turn on the lamp and … not know what to do next. Keeping a personal journal requires some effort on the part of the owner. Taking a start is always more difficult than continuing. But, if you have already realized the full benefits of writing down thoughts, a few guidelines will help you get started.

5 Steps to Keeping a Diary Correctly

    1. Don’t think too hard.

Many do not know how to properly keep a personal diary.Someone associates it with “girly activities”. Someone doubts their writing abilities or does not believe that there is something to write about in their life. Someone thinks that the diary should certainly become a kind of grandiose project that does not allow the presence of grammatical errors, sloppy pages and sloppy design. This is fundamentally wrong. It does not matter in what form your thoughts are presented and where to keep a diary – only the content will have value. Therefore, it is not at all necessary to buy special folios or fountain pens – it is enough to take the most ordinary notebook from the supermarket. And who said that there should be no corrections in the diary? If you suddenly change your mind while writing a paragraph, feel free to cross it out. Your right!

    2. Start small.

The first entries for a personal diary are always difficult. It seems that there is nothing to write about, since nothing particularly significant happened during the day. And in this case, how to start keeping a personal diary in your boring life? And you think that in ten years even the most insignificant memories will acquire unprecedented value for you.Wouldn’t you like to experience the emotions of a day 10 years ago? So let the future do it for yourself. Let the first entry contain no more than four or five lines – it doesn’t matter. Over time, you will be drawn into the process, and thoughts will come to mind on their own. Don’t stress – just describe what you did today, who you met, and what happened for lunch. If your ideas are really bad, answer these questions in writing:

      – What made me happy today?
      – What was the best / worst moment in the last twenty-four hours?
      – Who did I meet first when I left the house?
      – What am I going to do tomorrow?
      – What would you like to change today?

Reflect, ask yourself questions and seek answers to them.Take a written interview on a topic that interests you. – not ashamed. Moreover, you do it in writing.

    3. First Word Law and Twenty One Day Rule.

How do I start keeping a diary? Many psychologists recommend using these tricks to force yourself to do something on a regular basis. If you find it difficult to concentrate and make the first entry, write just a few words. This can serve as a guide for the flow of your thoughts, forming a certain direction for them.Just explain what is written. In order to develop the habit of creating at least a line every day, make an effort and practice it continuously. Write early in the morning or before bed. Make it a ritual, a must part of your day. After such a “marathon” you will not be able to fall asleep without writing anything.

    4. Stimulate your imagination with art.

Having difficulty with words? Draw! It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t turn out very nicely. Put in a little patience – and your personal picture will serve as an incentive to create another entry. In addition, it is worth keeping a personal diary with illustrations, if only because it will be much more interesting to read later. Of particular note is the general benefit of drawing – it relieves stress and helps you focus on important thoughts.

    5. Give your diary a time and a quiet place.

This should be a quiet corner where you will not be disturbed by friends, family and other noises. As you create your next entry, you should be immersed in yourself and focused on the memories. It will be easier to do this if you describe the chronicle at the same time. It seems incredible, but our body adjusts itself to the usual daily routine. So, if at exactly nine in the evening for fifteen to twenty minutes you sit down in your quiet corner and focus on the events of the day, it will become easier and easier to do this every day.

Regular chronicling of life can be of immense benefit to each of us. However, it can be difficult to get started.Getting in the habit of writing regularly for your personal diary is not easy, but it can be done if you follow the guidelines mentioned above. Each of us is capable of this. If you decide to start a personal diary now, then in ten or twenty years you will say “thank you very much” to yourself.

90,000 “They consider me proud” – Children – Site materials – Snob

We publish the diary entries of a female religious school student for 1867. They became part of the book “Diocesan”, which will soon be published by the publishing house “New Literary Review”.In her diary, a girl unknown to us – only one document remained in the archives – tells about the everyday experiences of a pupil of a religious school for a whole year. Describes his “bad character”, attempts to cultivate humility and respect for elders, seeking peace in a rather difficult life situation – in a school isolated from the outside world, with its numerous prohibitions and strict teachers.

Unlike institutes for noble maidens, diocesan schools were designed to educate orphans and daughters from poor families. They had to release the future wives of priests, so that they would be “worthy spouses of the ministers of the church” and “worthy guardian mothers who would bring up their children in the rules of piety and good nature.” Therefore, the students were not tortured with foreign languages (so as not to instill “inappropriate conceit”), and the main task was set religious education.

Over 150 years, the world has not changed so much that our children could not find themselves in a similar situation. For example, when we send them to boarding school.Or at least summer camp. In their memoirs, which will be published in the same book, the “diocesan women” talk about how they “cried bitterly” when they got to an unfamiliar city to unfamiliar people, but then “of course, they got used to it”. About what tricks one had to go to in order to communicate with the outside world, about secret albums and falling in love with teachers. Despite the tremendous cultural difference between children in the mid-19th and early 21st centuries, these diaries contain a universal experience of a child who ends up in a closed school.

    1867 February 9.

Shrovetide. I am sad, there is no peace in my soul – I want to cry so much … Yesterday there was an exam in Russian geography. It ended badly for me. I do not have a very good quick idea and therefore could not tell without error the sea route from Kamchatka to St. Petersburg. Marya Matveevna (the teacher of our class) reprimanded me. I, in a fit of sadness and emotional excitement, answered not very politely… However, then I did not notice it. But in the evening Marya Matveevna reminded me of this. Then I was fully aware of the whole foolishness of my act. I felt the urge to pray, cry, and seek relief from reading some soul-saving book.

I cried a lot, then began to read “On Imitation of Christ.” Then I really felt some relief. I wrote off three prayers that I will use later. I will also try to copy some passages from “Imitation of Christ” into a special notebook… Katya (sister) advises me, and I myself find it necessary and necessary to ask for forgiveness from Marya Matveyevna. I am ashamed, but I will try to take advantage of the opportunity, I will come and tell her: “Excuse me, Marya Matveyevna.” I will not say anything more, I will not justify myself with anything … Now I am ashamed to look at Marya Matveyevna. Will she ever forgive me?

Marya Matveevna forgave me on farewell Sunday …

Instructions from Marya Matveyevna, given on Clean Monday evening, in the first year in senior class: “Be condescending to others and strict with yourself”; “Avoid lies, gossip and idle talk”; “Try to get here for yourself good rules of morality that you will need throughout your life”; “Watch yourself… “

Lord! Help me to improve … Only that is somewhat gratifying for me that now I feel a desire, even a need, to help others as much as I can, and an aversion to idleness …

Now is the morning of the 24th. May the Lord help me to spend today in a peaceful serenity of spirit! ..

Again in the morning I take up my pen to describe how I spent the 24th of February … I thank the Lord: what I asked for was fulfilled. I didn’t have any collisions yesterday. My feelings are calm, I felt a thirst to love all my friends equally, to help them.During the all-night vigil (it was Saturday), my thoughts ascended to the Lord Creator with all my heart … Now the morning of the 25th. Everything is quiet, calm, only I can hear the ringing of the bell – they must be ringing for early mass … How good it is now – I just want to test myself.

That’s right, every time you have to write in the morning. In class I somehow do not find time, and now, thanks to God, I got used to getting up before the bell rings and getting up as soon as I wake up, and not stay in bed, as I did before. Standing up, I start to work on my diary, while no one is interfering or disturbing my inner and outer peace of mind.

Yesterday I was repeating geography with Masha P … Lord! Be my assistant in this work from the very beginning, so that the end (exam) will be happy for me.

March 28th. Marya Matveyevna scolded me, saying that before I was a much better character, but now I have already left her obedience. This she concluded from the fact that on the 24th she ordered me to stand on the left kliros through V. When I told her this, she may not believe me.On Saturday, I was ordered to “stand at the table” for inaccurate delivery and recording of linen. Now Marya Matveyevna will be angry with me … I am crying … The pupils, I think, and as can be seen from some of their actions, they do not like me very much, but how I wish I could use their love and disposition … I love everyone with all my heart, although, perhaps, sometimes I offend someone … I am considered proud, but what will I be proud of? I consider myself very little useful: I have neither a decent voice, nor the ability to do something really sensible…

April 18. Marya Matveyevna again scolded me for taking stockings out of the classroom without her asking and giving V. stockings. Marya Matveevna told me that I often get caught in such actions, that I, wanting to ingratiate my friends, cover up their actions, and “the one who conceals the crime is himself a criminal.” I am very sad that such reproaches had to be heard from Marya Matveyevna, whom I sincerely, unhypocritically love and respect, and whose love I would like to deserve. Masha P… gives me lessons in patience. She will sometimes say something that I do not expect from her at all. It’s hard for me to bear it, but I’m working hard to listen with patience and not make objections, because it will annoy me even more. However, I’m on M.P. I’m not angry: she has an independent character, does not tolerate contradictions. I will be very, very grateful to her if she teaches me patience and composure. The character of M.R., it seems to me, will be softer than M.P.

Yesterday I was put to embroider a handkerchief for the Empress Tsesarevna.Today (July 11) the children of the orphanage were with us. One of them plays the piano well and loves music very much. Today we went for a walk in Polushkin Grove, where we refreshed ourselves with fresh air.

Elizaveta Pavlovna is very kind to me now. How I value her location! I will cherish it and always. Today, after afternoon tea, before the all-night vigil, I read “Jesus Christ on Calvary” with Katya. In the golden age of mental education, the best feelings of a person begin to develop: love, sincerity, patriotism, friendship.Fortunately, I often feel these feelings in me and wish to have them always. I prefer mental labor to physical labor. I think I’m doing the right thing. I was sent here to educate my heart and mind, and the rest is a secondary matter: therefore, I must primarily develop my mental abilities.

For a long time I have not found time to pour out thoughts and feelings that deeply touch my heart. Now everyone has a lot of lessons. So, I will use the free minutes and seconds.Oh, how sorry I am that a precious summer has passed. I spent this summer in a special way and will probably remember it for a long time.

Already only nine months are left to live at the school with dear friends, to spend time in pleasant pursuits, with joyful hopes, with bright dreams. Is it really so soon I will have to part with all this?

Today (September 1) Masha P. brought me sad thoughts of separation. She said: “It won’t be long for me to be with you, then, perhaps, I will never see you… “And in fact: suppose we will see each other, but what will a short meeting mean for sincere friends who have been brought up, who have become akin under the same roof? ..

I will take away many, many pleasant, gratifying things from school. Above, at every step, there are places remarkable for some event that happened on them. It will be nice afterwards to remember all these places, the focus of our friendly conversations, jokes, fun …

Today is March 1st – the first spring day. The last spring I spend at the school is coming. This spring, in my opinion, the spring of my life will also end. Then summer will come, as in nature, the summer of my life. I will have to act more or less independently.

Today I walked along the corridor with M.P., we talked about graduation … I am sad and happy together …

“Blockade is an unreflected humanitarian catastrophe”

80 years ago – September 8, 1941 – the blockade of Leningrad began.During the blockade, the poet Nikolai Tikhonov created a number of prosaic texts that amaze us today with their paradoxical valence. On the one hand, they are all written with an eye on Smolny: it was from there that Tikhonov, one of the helpful and successful functionaries of the blockade literary world, received instructions on what to write and how (he was awarded the Stalin Prize for his merits in obedience). However, if you read carefully, patiently wading through the bushes of life-affirming appeals to the all-patience of the inhabitants of the dying city, then you begin to notice gaps, hollows, shadows in the ideologically correct fabric of this letter.Either the author is talking, or talking, but sometimes he says something quite significant, strange. For example, he describes a reader who, in a pause between visits to city leaders, runs into his home and discovers that his library has gone under the ice: “And suddenly he saw her, she was lying on the floor, and you could read every word on the open page through thick transparent ice. The book lived, but it could only be read through this cold blue barrier. It was like a fairy tale. “This image, perhaps even overly melodramatic and decorative, however, captured my imagination, and I began to turn to the metaphor of the “cold blue barrier”, trying to explain to myself and my interlocutors how exactly today, 80 years later, we look, hear, feel, we remember, we read the blockade of Leningrad, what barriers separated us from those events.

A lot has already been said about the paradoxical situation of the existence of two parallel stories of the blockade – official, with granite, gilding and emptiness of monuments, and private, domestic, with the silence of our loved ones, with the impossibility of not eating, throwing away bread and at the same time with the impossibility, enormous difficulty in searching for the right words to say what this bread was.A lot of ink was spilled in attempts to discuss which city needs a blockade museum and a blockade history center today: judging by the result, the city authorities are not interested, not necessary, not important, not urgent. There is neither a museum corresponding to the scale of the tragedy, nor a scientific center in the city. That is why this material is dedicated to people who, despite the stubborn intention of the authorities to ignore the Leningrad catastrophe, take on the work of memory. This time it seemed to me important to talk not about what is missing today, not about the gaping, but about those who live despite this gaping: before us are the efforts, the reflections of three figures – a historian, a writer, a cinematographer. These are remarkable, but not unique cases: on September 8, readings of the names of the dead blockade are held in the city; teams of historians work, whose works have recently returned to us the most important documents, published diaries, which have become a unique source for the study of the blockade epic; plays are produced here, documentaries and cartoons are shot, and discussions are held on the possibility of representing this experience in art cinematography. In recent years, a number of studies of the blockade history and memory have appeared, which fundamentally violated the situation of silence: here one can at least mention the studies of Sergei Yarov, Irina Sandomirskaya, Nikita Lomagin, Emily Van Baskirk, Kirill Boldovsky, Alexis Perry, Richard Bidlak, Tatyana Voronina, Jeff Haas , Irina Kaspe, Alexey and Anastasia Pavlovsky, Alexey Romanov, Natalia Arlauskaite, Irina Paperno. There is a huge, genuine interest in what happened, there are obvious attempts to turn to the “mortal winter”, not to turn away from it, not to fall into blissful insensibility and unconsciousness. One of the most compelling reasons for engaging in blockade (as a phenomenon of history, biology, psychology, socioeconomics, culture) today is precisely that the deeper you engage in blockade, the more you learn about the nature of totalitarianism. At this stage, in measuring this anniversary, it is quite obvious that the point, as always, is in recognizing one’s own subjectivity, one’s own freedom to remember: since the power, such as it is today, is not interested in maintaining memory and studying history, then memory and history will be with us, they will be alive as much as we, individual citizens, will serve them.As all the heroes of this material note, this separateness and fragmentation greatly inhibits their preservation of the archive, but there is no other way out today. It would be possible for many hours, on many pages to talk about people who choose to engage in the blockade today, fully realizing how disastrous, shamefully huge the gaps of our knowledge are, how much we will never learn, having lost and omitted precious evidence. But our material today is devoted not to what cannot be done, but to what can be done, one cannot but do.

    Polina Barskova

    Natalia Sokolovskaya

writer, editor of blockade diaries, curator of the exhibition “People want to know. The history of the creation of the “Blockade Book” by Ales Adamovich and Daniil Granin “

    – How has the “Blockade Book” changed from the moment of its publication to our day (it is primarily about our perception, but also about the corpus itself – after all, it grew, the authors included new chapters)?

    – I believe there are two ways of looking at the Book of Blockade. There is an opinion of specialists, historians of the blockade, who understand that the book requires clarification or explanation, since the volume of knowledge of the blockade has grown incredibly over the past three decades due to the fact that the archives were opened (not completely, but significantly), as well as thanks to the active research of historians. But there is a view of the conventional “simple reader” who hears the voices of “ordinary people” who were inside the catastrophe and captured it in their diaries or memoirs. Readers find themselves involved in a colossal experience that is knowledge in its own way.I think this co-experience has made and will continue to make The Blockade Book up-to-date for every new generation of readers. Adamovich and Granin created a universal, timeless text about the “Leningrad apocalypse”. This is evidenced by the letters (mainly from people who survived the blockade catastrophe) that came to the authors after the publication of the first part of the book in the 12th issue of the Novy Mir magazine in 1977, letters that came to the publication of the book (the first part was supplemented and revised) in 1979, letters that came after the release of both parts of the book in 1982, and – most importantly – this is evidenced by the reviews left on the websites of online bookstores by our contemporaries. We can add to this the reviews for the exhibition “People want to know. The history of the creation of the “Blockade Book” “(the words” people want to know “were crossed out by the censor successively from the typescript and from the magazine layout). If we remove the dates, then it is not always possible to understand what time this or that review belongs to. All letters contain gratitude for the word of truth about the blockade, for almost the first serious opportunity to speak out and be heard, for an attempt, in spite of censorship, to make taboo knowledge of what was happening in the city known, so to speak, to the general public. However, both in the first and in the last reviews the words “need the truth”, “must know” are repeated so often that it becomes clear: it is the truth about the blockade that is still in short supply, and modern people often look at the blockade through the prism of Soviet clichés reproduced and current ideologues.

The “Blockade Book” was undergoing changes already in the process of creation, this can be seen by comparing typescript versions, layout and first publications. The impetus for the creation of the “Blockade Book” was created by A.Adamovich and his co-authors J. Bryl and V. Kolesnik documentary book “I am from a fiery village”, tough and direct, based on the stories of residents of Belarusian villages burned by the invaders. It was the speech of the survivors without editing or commenting. However, at the very beginning of the work on the “Book of Blockade” the co-authors realized that they were dealing with completely different material: a new component appeared in the history of the physical destruction of the civilian population and the fascist military machine destroying it – the Soviet power, which ruled life in the besieged city. And this circumstance has erected serious obstacles in the way of the creation and publication of the “Blockade Book”. The work of the censors began already at the typing stage: pages were crossed out, which mentioned the actions of the authorities, in particular, concerning the problem of food. And at the same time, from a letter classified as “secret” about the suspension of the publication of “Chapters from the blockade book” in the magazine “New World”, sent to the Central Committee of the CPSU by the head of the Main Directorate for the Protection of State Secrets in the Press under the Council of Ministers of the USSR P.K. Romanov, we learn that the authors demanded a separate story “about the work of the Leningrad party organization, Soviet, Komsomol and other city and regional bodies.” And then a new chapter appears in the book with an emphatically non-heroic title “The Discharge of Duty.” In subsequent editions, this chapter became known as “What could have been done”. The name is very ambiguous, considering that the stress here can be put on any word.

The book, for censorship reasons, did not include the transcript of the conversation between the authors and I.A. Andrienko, during the blockade – deputy chairman of the Leningrad City Executive Committee, head of the department of trade. During the conversation, Andrienko names the number of victims of the blockade known to him – 900 thousand people – and immediately adds: “… they named 631 thousand, it should be named, but what the analysis shows is our internal affair, there is no need for it.” This and many other documents, on the basis of which the book “People want to know,” was made, are in the D. Granin fund at the Russian State Archive of Literature and Literature.

In addition, the censorship insistently demanded that the first editor of the “Blockade Book” D.Tevekelian called “the bright piece”: “Compromises. In everything. … Let’s disfigure the “Blockade Book”. Censorship is on guard … … for any episode they seem to be underestimated. The patriotism of the blockade, the will of the party, its all-embracing influence. It is very necessary, I want the reader not to doubt: even in besieged Leningrad with its terrible life and wild victims, everything was still under control. But how! … But the main requirement is the same every time: “We need a light piece …” “

It was these very “bright pieces” that brought Tatiana Voronina, the author of the book “Remember in Our Way”, published several years ago, to the straightforward conclusion that the “Blockade Book” was created according to the principle of socialist realism. The assertion that the “Book of Blockade” “is crowned with a happy ending” (“as in any socialist realist work”) is also incorrect. The “blockade book” ends with the fact that the authors found the original of Yura Ryabinkin’s diary and now, in painful conversations with his sister Irina, they are trying to understand where the boy’s traces are lost. The book, published in 1982, ends, in fact, with quotes from Ecclesiastes: “The living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing …” and “Time to collect stones …” It can hardly be called a happy ending. And in the penultimate paragraph it is said that for a person “the pain of truth … is more important, dearer than the dubious” bliss “of ignorance or lies.” That is why, I believe, today we are continuing a difficult conversation about the blockade.

As soon as censorship was abolished in the country, Adamovich and Granin returned to work, adding previously removed fragments and new chapters to the existing text. In 1988, the magazine “Znamya” published a story by D. Granin “Forbidden Chapter” about his meeting with A.N.Kosygin and an attempt to talk about the blockade. This is partially described in the “History of the creation of the“ Book of Blockade ””, published in 2002 in “Friendship of Peoples” and later prefaced by D. Granin in the form of a preface to the “Book of Blockade” outside the main body. In 1992, the book was supplemented with the chapter “Leningrad Affair”. In 2014, the book contains a section called “Appendices”, which includes the story of D. Granin “Rum women”, as well as an interview with A. Adamovich and his notebooks from the period of work on the “Book of Blockade”.This edition is considered canonical.

    – Why does this book seem so interesting and important to you today? It is not “new” at all: what is its relevance today?

    – Thinking about the “Book of Blockade”, I cannot help but feel the déjà vu that arises now, when in our city, which has survived the blockade, we are living a new, covid reality. I have before my eyes the Novy Mir layout of the “Blockade Book”, dotted with censorship deletions, a significant part of which concerns references to starvation. The authorities tried in every way to minimize the irrecoverable losses among the civilian population. The same is happening now, in the covid pandemic. Comparison of the blockade with the pandemic is, of course, excessive. In January-February 1942, more people died of hunger in Leningrad (then there was almost no bombing) (only according to official, incomplete, data – 210 thousand people) than in the whole country for a year and a half of a pandemic (only according to official, incomplete, data – 165 thousand people). However, in both cases, we see that the words about “the priority of human life” were an empty phrase both under the Soviet and under the current regime.

While creating the “Blockade Book”, Granin and Adamovich continued their struggle with the state apparatus for the true number of victims of the blockade – a struggle begun ten years earlier by Leningrad historians V.M. Kovalchuk and G.L. Sobolev, who published in the journal Voprosy istorii (No. 12 for 1965) the article “Leningrad Requiem (On the Victims of the Population in Leningrad during the War and the Siege)”. The main opponent of historians and later writers was the Minister of Trade of the RSFSR D.V. Pavlov, who from September 1941 to January 1942 was the GKO commissioner for food supplies to the troops of the Leningrad Front and the population of the city.In 1975 (I am sure that the year was not accidental: it was then that Adamovich and Granin began to walk through the blockade and write down memories, laying the foundation for the first and only popular book about the tragedy of Leningrad) Pavlov sent a letter to the Central Committee of the CPSU, opposing the publication of data that were different from his victims of the blockade. The struggle (or rather, self-defense) of Pavlov is built around the figure cited by him in his book “Leningrad in the Blockade” (1958, first edition): “During the blockade 641,803 people died of hunger, for which all Soviet people grieve…. Leningraders were dying, but how? ” And just below Pavlov with stunning cynicism refers to Lenin: “When it comes to the distribution of food, it is impossible to think that it is necessary to distribute only fairly, but it is necessary to think that this distribution is a method, a tool, a means for increasing production. It is necessary to provide state maintenance with food only to those employees who are really needed in conditions of the highest labor productivity, and if food is distributed as a policy tool, then in the direction of reducing the number of those that are not absolutely needed and encouraging those who are really needed. “And then Pavlov draws the line: “These words, spoken by V.I. Lenin many years ago (at the Third All-Russian Food Conference in 1921), under different circumstances and in a different situation, fully justified themselves and in a deadly battle with the enemy in 1941. ” In the next editions of the book, there is no longer any reference to Lenin (apparently, the “comrades” advised to remove it). But we know very well that it was precisely this principle that worked in besieged Leningrad, which doomed hundreds of thousands of residents locked in a ring to death.I foresee with bitterness that in any extreme situation, this principle will be applied in our time, condemning to death people who are not embedded in any nomenclature, such as, for example, the inhabitants of the “Blockade Book” great Pavel Filonov and just a teenager Yura Ryabinkin just starting to live …

Today, assessing the pandemic situation, I see a city largely left to its own devices, as it was in the first blockade winter. I, the people on the streets, my relatives and friends – I think we are all taken into account in advance in the estimate of irrecoverable losses. We, Petersburgers, are still the same document classified as “secret” as Leningraders were eighty years ago. But one day this document will also be made public.

Lenin’s quotation, which is certainly important for the authors, was present in the typescript of the “Blockade Book”, but was seized by the censor, as well as the mention of the name of the Minister of Trade Pavlov. However, one mention remained (without an explanation of who is being discussed) in the definitely ambiguous and completely apocryphal story of S.A. Przhevalsky about milk for the front commander.

    – We know that at the moment in the city there is neither a center for studying blockade history, nor an adequate museum, and as a result, each of us “cultivates his own garden”: what work seems meaningful to you at the moment?

    – Precisely “to cultivate your garden.” The new reality does not provide us with anything else. There is no single center in the city where the blockade knowledge would be accumulated. But St. Petersburg historians are working and publishing excellent books, books with documents from the period of the blockade are published, the center for the study of ego-documents “Prozhito” is working …

Several years ago there was talk about a new museum of the blockade, about the Institute of blockade memory. However, all this was either too early or too late. The authorities are completely unprepared for anything like this. She is interested in the events taking place, the motto for which can be preceded by the very phrase of D. Pavlov: “Leningraders were dying, but how?” Note that the exclamation mark in this design would look much more organic. I suppose that the creation of the first Museum of Defense and Blockade in 1946 was partly a misunderstanding. The victorious people (in this case, the people of Leningrad) imagined too much of themselves, which was quickly indicated to him: already in 1949 the museum was closed, and later completely destroyed.A pitiful likeness of the first museum was opened with great difficulty in 1989 (by the way, the “Siege Book” in Leningrad, at the scene of the events, was published only in 1984: G. Romanov obstructed). The new / old museum looked more like a village club, to which a large staircase with a carpet and pompous portraits of military leaders on the walls was attached. However, in the new millennium, the same staircase with a carpet leads to a slightly renovated exposition, and at the entrance we see all the same portraits taller than human height.

And what kind of full-fledged modern museum can we talk about now, when special bodies have been created in the country to guide our historical memory? We reached the past in record time and can now empirically find out what it’s like to try to speak and write the truth. However, living a life already lived is a dubious pleasure.

And the last thing: about the complaints about the fact that the Leningrad blockade is almost not known in the West (I have a hand on my heart – and we do not have too much).Almost all translations of the “Blockade Book” into the languages of the world were carried out under Soviet rule from the censored original. In the new century, in a new translation from the last, canonical, edition, the book was published only in Germany and Lithuania. And something I did not notice in our literary officials of the desire to “promote” the “Book of Blockade”, the desire to open to readers of other countries this unknown page of the Second World War.

    Lev Lurie

    historian

    – Recently, the blockade has attracted more and more interest from researchers and artists (and politicians…). What do you think is the reason for this heightened interest 80 years later? What is the blockade to us?

    – Blockade is an unreflected humanitarian catastrophe. The official myth – “the heroic defense of Leningrad” – is imposing and unconvincing. Local and federal authorities are passive, cowardly, afraid to ask questions and answer them. The discrepancy between the number and nature of the victims and the lack of commemoration rituals, significant memorials, the museum causes irritation and even rage.

    – What blockade “plots”, questions, destinies (or, as they sometimes say now, “secrets”) seem to you now the most important, interesting (for study), what is the time now?

    – Time does not come, rather, it leaves. It is important to understand how and to what extent the “gray economy” worked, what role did personal connections, status, and direct theft play in the rescue strategy, and what proportion of Leningraders they covered. Many interesting military issues – the role of the Finns; Govorov and Manstein’s defeat; collaborators; change of mood in the city; blockade anti-Semitism; attitude towards local city authorities; the military roots of the “Leningrad affair”; mistakes and victorious decisions when trying to break the blockade.

    – 80 years later, as you know, there is neither a blockade center nor a museum in the city, which is associated with political / administrative circumstances … At the moment, each of us is trying to overcome the blockade oblivion and ignorance in his own way. What now in this work seems meaningful to you? What can you do? What are you doing?

    – Among other things, I participate in the siege memory project at the Levashovsky bakery. RBI is reconstructing the block around the Levashovsky bakery, which had been inactive for a long time. The plant is a monument of constructivism. The developer decided to keep the building and asked me to create a memorial blockade zone there. Together with historian Dmitry Zhuravlev (student of the chief specialist in the blockade Nikita Lomagin, deputy director of the Military Medical Museum) and set designer Mikhail Kachman (Leningrader, head of the department of the University of Maryland), we came up with a blockade chapel, where an exposition reflecting the history of the quarter around the plant is being thought out. This is a compressed in time history of the beginning of the war, mobilization, evacuation, bombing, disappearance of food, transport, water supply and sewerage, the story of hunger, cold, dystrophy, cannibalism, the opening of the Road of Life for the population, the saving late spring of 1942, breaking the blockade, liberating the city, victory. Background – authentic facades, photographs of the dead, light model – dying windows, frames, sounds.

In principle, it seems to me that, avoiding confrontation and cooperation with the authorities, we need to remind people that there was a blockade. That this is not a reason to dance, dress children in soldiers’ uniforms and eat porridge from the field kitchen for free. That in every house in the city center there are hundreds of unsung dead. There is nothing worse than war. The reading of names on September 8 is our contribution to the remembrance of ancestors.

    Lyubov Arkus

    cinematographer, film historian

    – How do you understand why the blockade now attracts so much, in particular, filmmakers? What is the blockade to us / them?

    – I have no answer to this question, or rather to the first part of it. To be honest, I do not understand where this boom in film projects about the blockade came from. My humble work was connected exclusively with the chronicle and documentary filming of the blockade, who were either the heroes of this chronicle, or were blockade children – because the plot of the film was somehow connected with the blockade childhood. But today we are seeing the growth of ambitious fiction projects about the blockade, some of which have already been completed and released on the screen (for example, projects by Andrey Zaitsev and partly by Kantemir Balagov), some are at the stage of unrealized plans (Andrey Zvyagintsev and Bakur Bakuradze). Fiction – that is, fictional films – involves reconstruction. Which – from my point of view – is impossible. And the point is not even that the present Petersburg, former Leningrad, cannot be repainted in blockade colors, it is impossible to restore at least some authenticity of streets, apartments, entrances, bridges, city objects. It’s not about the double-glazed windows, some kind of repairs, etc. It seems to me that the one who is the most important in the film – the Blockade Man – is unrecoverable (in the visual and semantic integrity that cinema presupposes).

You can bring snow from all over Russia and pile up, referring to the photographs, all these snowdrifts; you can attract the most skilled masters of computer graphics, and they will model for a lot of money that urban space. Let’s admit. You can dress an actor / actress, with make-up to achieve traces of fatal dystrophy. But the eyes … Where are you going to get your eyes?

You won’t go anywhere eyes. They will nullify all efforts, because no acting genius is enough to play IT.

In my opinion, this is an attempt with obviously doomed means.

After all, what is the most important thing for us in the blockade? The fact that no matter what knowledge you have, no matter how many documents, letters, diaries you read, no matter what figures historians give you, you still cannot fully imagine it.She, the blockade, is UNEXPECTABLE. How can something that cannot be imagined live, show on the screen?

    – When you started doing your blockade business, what were your impressions of the state of archival affairs?

    – Many archives have wonderful people who know their business. And each archive in itself, which I visited, left the best memories. But the fact of the matter is that each of them is on its own. There is no place where you can come and get comprehensive information on the issue of interest to you related to the blockade.Probably, the never-created museum of the blockade should have become such a place. In which copies would be collected (no archive wants to part with the originals) – but they would be collected and clearly structured. Look: I had a question whether a film with a blockade city chronicle was shown at the Nuremberg Trials. I found two documents indicating that it was made specifically for Nuremberg and approved by the highest officials. But in fact, he was not shown there. Why? And where is he now, this movie? A very narrow, particular question, to which I had to find an answer, required me to work in eight different archives, and in each of them I found a small piece of this puzzle.Did I fold it all the way? Not sure. After all, I never got to the most closed one.

As for the blockade film archive, its fate is, in fact, the plot of my not yet completed film. This is a completely tragic story.

    – From your experience: what happens to a person when he / she is engaged in a blockade case (in a movie)?

    – A state of stupor occurs with a person (from my experience).Complete helplessness. The task of cinema is to create an image. An image is something all-encompassing. Even in its small parameters. It is a whole with its own coordinate system. With the earth and sky, with the air that the lungs of this Image breathe. The cinematographer differs from the researcher in that he cannot get away from visuality. He cannot go, in particular, in details, in numbers, in individual destinies. He must show a visible image on the screen, and for this he must comprehend the Whole. What can a person who has come to the Blockade so close to be able not only to feel, to know, but also to embody this Whole can feel? I think this is a deadly number. It seems to me that the fate of the researcher Sergei Yarov, the author of the books “Blockade Ethics” and “The Daily Life of the Blockade”, tells us a lot about this. I seriously think that his body could not stand it. Apparently, the subtlety of his psychophysics, empiricism were such that he could not stop.

    – There is such a question: what movie about the blockade makes sense to watch? I always say: “Once upon a time there was a girl” and “Solo” by Lopushansky … What do you think?

    – I agree with you – and I can not offer other names.I can only explain my choice, which coincides with yours. “Once upon a time there was a girl” – a film created in the “scenery” of a real blockade city. The people inhabiting it are, if not blockade, then one way or another people of wartime. “Once upon a time there was a girl” – a kind of archeology, this is what we just got “from the hands” of the blockade. And with all the restrictions and censorship prohibitions, it seems to “ooze” from the frames. For me, the scene with the lullaby “Once in a frosty winter on the edge of the forest”, which is sung by two girls, outweighs everything.

    – What is the state of your blockade project now?

    – In a state of deafening failure. Thank God that only I and a few of my friends know about this, because I archived it and put it off until better times. Are these hypothetical times the best? Unlikely. I need such a state of mind and such a life gap when the degree of my existential despair will allow me, without fear and without being distracted, to plunge into this world with my head.Otherwise, nothing can ever work with the blockade theme.

90,000 Voices from Kabul Audio Diary of a Real-Time Journalist from Taliban-held Afghanistan

    – The situation has changed dramatically since yesterday.Yesterday, after it was reported that the Taliban had entered the city, everyone suddenly began to run home, everything closed and nobody could be seen on the streets. Today, on the contrary, after eight in the morning there are so many people everywhere. And the worst thing is that it is impossible to distinguish whether it is the Taliban or ordinary people in Afghanistan. So a big change has now taken place.

Calm is not visible, because you can still see Taliban marching through here everywhere. I live near the airport, and you can hear shooting from here. All people in the morning are already running towards the airport.

What has changed is that women are already dressed differently – they already have a hijab. Men are also dressed differently. There are still a lot of them. Now I see so many people out of the window that it’s impossible to notice at all whether they are the Taliban or are they ordinary people.

Yesterday there was an alarm, of course. Wherever I went, whoever I saw, there was only fear. There was fear in the eyes, each person was so terribly afraid. Someone was afraid that they would lose property, someone was afraid that, God forbid, something would happen to his children. But now there is no such thing that they welcomed the Taliban, but they took to the streets and just watched, just watched – the same Taliban that were 20 years ago, or something has changed. I think that people just came out to observe the situation: what will happen to us.

Taliban representatives are patrolling a street in one of the districts of Kabul.

Yesterday the last time I went out for groceries was two o’clock in the afternoon. Now the Taliban are everywhere near my house. So, of course, I’m scared. Moreover, when I worked with foreign organizations, and not only me, but also all my colleagues who worked with them, and journalists, I received messages from yesterday until now. No one slept all night, no one feels safe. And each person asks the same thing: “How can we leave the country?” This is what happens to journalists and ordinary people. There are rumors that they are following those people who are journalists who worked with the government, who worked with foreigners. So they look for them at home. So, judging by this situation, of course, I’m not safe either.

You know, today I went outside for about three minutes, and I didn’t feel well, I didn’t feel so safe, because there were very few women around, I practically didn’t see them, so I quickly returned home, because, of course however, the situation is still very unknown, you just do not know what you can, what you cannot do, where you can walk. Although the Taliban themselves have repeatedly said that “you are safe, there is nothing to be afraid of, you can go out into the street.”

Not that people didn’t believe the Taliban would take over the city, but there was still hope. Even those settlers who came from the provinces, they still had the hope that there was some kind of government, there was someone who would protect them. But yesterday, when I saw them, one person said to me: “That’s it, we have no more hope. Who will protect us, who will protect my children?” In particular, they were very scared for their girls, because they even marry them, so they moved because of this. There is no hope, but this does not mean that they did not try to leave the country. They were very eager from the moment they received the message that foreign troops were going to leave Afghanistan, from that moment all this began: someone went for passports, someone for a visa. But, unfortunately, not everyone succeeded. And those people who already went to the airport yesterday, these are the people from whom someone did not receive a passport, someone did not receive a visa, and someone even received a visa, but cannot fly away – these are all those people. But this does not mean that they expected the Taliban not to come.Of course, everyone had fear. But the fact that the capital was taken was a shock for everyone, including me.

Yesterday the Taliban sent a message that the Taliban would not use weapons against civilians. But 30 minutes ago, someone used a weapon at the airport. Foreign troops sensed that the Taliban were using weapons against them, and gunfire began on both sides. And, judging by the situation, many even died. But now I do not have exact information about this, because I am talking to you – I have not checked what is happening there. But 30 minutes ago I received such a message that the shooting had already begun, but this was not because they wanted to use weapons to spoil the civilians, but because they wanted to protect themselves.
