Customer Reviews

Cool Cats has received a lot of compliments from their customers saying that they’re very satisfied with the overall service and performances. A customer from Google Reviews wrote:

“Exactly what you’d think of when you think of a jazz bar. Behind the heavy door is a wide open room filled with plush sofas and chairs and chic decor. The acoustics and audio system in the place is much better than many other bars out there and does the musicians justice. Good music aside, the cocktails are fantastic. Creative and well-executed, you’re unlikely to find similar drinks (unless it’s the classics) elsewhere. As a bonus, the drinks are all inspired by some significant jazz historical event. The snacks menu is mostly seafood-focused, you won’t find your fries here. But that’s okay, their chili cashews and freshly toasted, warm and flavorful that you won’t miss the overpriced truffle fries.”

Best bars, cafes and lounges to catch live music acts

Sure, there are many restaurants and bars out there that frequently offer live music performances. But which ones actually stage quality acts? Well, probably just a handful. If you’re not sure which they are, plan your nights out with this list of cafes, bars and restaurants that have been known to set themselves apart from the rest when it comes to music.

Acid Bar

First on our list is a place that’s no stranger to the local music scene. This quaint shophouse space at Peranakan Place provides an intimate ambience for budding singer-songwriters and cover bands to perform—in fact, Acid Bar was the place that first saw Jack & Rai perform over a decade ago. Live music is on from 5pm till late everyday, with different artists each night. Catch live acoustic performances from local bands like Kollective, Pam & OBB, and Sugarlove here in the heart of Orchard Road along Emerald Hill.

Cool Cats

This chic speakeasy bar has made its way into the hearts of dedicated jazz musicians and avid listeners with their world-class international acts, including soul singer Anita Spring, Brazilian saxophonist Leo Gandelman, and unique French-Caribbean singer Tricia Evy. Whether you’re a fan of Bossa Nova, Funk or Latin jazz, swing by Cool Cats for an all-immersive lush experience. Don’t forget to try their inventive cocktails, that are all inspired by the history of jazz.

Crazy Elephant

Good music doesn’t always necessarily spell fancy and exclusive. Unpretentious and authentic, Crazy Elephant invites anyone and everyone to come in to enjoy their extensive list of local and international acts every night. Aside from getting your daily dose of blues and rock & roll from resident US bands Bob Sauler and The Blues Machine, they’re also home to Singapore’s longest running jam session held every Sunday from 8pm. So feel free to get a little crazy.

Going Om

The next time you’re out exploring the uber-hip Haji Lane, be sure to drop by stalwart Going Om. A self-proclaimed sanctuary, this vibrant cafe is tucked away in one of the many refurbished shophouses along the street. It’s truly a place to kick back and relax/groove by the street to the live acoustic renditions by local bands or singer-songwriters.

Hard Rock Cafe

You probably already know why they’re on the list, but we’re just here to remind you this American franchise hasn’t lost their mojo just yet. Known for their signature decor and fantastic burgers, their center stage is regularly graced by high energy acts like the talented reggae band Bushmen and local five-piece band Tabula. Look out also for a major throwback to a grand display of rock and roll oldies every Friday with Jive Talkin’. Besides these, Hard Rock Cafe features stripped down acoustic performances as well—so grab a seat and start loading up on some nachos.

Hood Bar and Cafe

This music bar adorned with funky art has given opportunities to countless aspiring local bands and continues to promote some of the best local talents. If you’re more into mando/canto pop, make this your new hood with bilingual pop rock band 吃喝玩乐 E.D.M, while R&B or soul enthusiasts can have their ears blessed by Yayabananas and Ariane Goh. We’re already thinking of dedications for them to croon back to us.

Lulu’s Lounge

Retro DJs and burlesque dancers? Consider us intrigued. Reminiscent of a 1960’s New York backstreet club, Lulu’s Lounge combines music and entertainment in this animated hideout with an open display of live performances of jazz, funk, disco, house—you name it, they have it. A truly memorable experience for a night out if you’re looking to party hard.

For a regular dose of top-notch crooning coupled with fine libations, look no further than Maduro at Dempsey. It shares the same building as popular French restaurant Atout (which offers nibbles to Maduro guests), but is found three floors up in a spacious, secluded enclave that many musicians and jazz fans have come to call their regular haunt. Come for the live music, stay for the chill vibes you won’t find anywhere else.

Shuffle Bistro Bar

This second floor Clarke Quay spot has bands belting out smooth English and Mandarin tunes every day of the week (except Sundays, when they’re closed). Send in your dedications, order up a decently-priced pint, and come with the crew for an easy night out. Just make sure to arrive early to grab a seat.

The Beast Cafe & Bar

If you’re scouting for some good open mics, come by The Beast Cafe & Bar on Thursdays to have a listen while you chomp down on some classic comfort food—think southern fried chicken, BBQ wings and steak. Between seasoned performers and enthusiastic first timers, we promise you’re in for a wild ride.

Barber Shop by Timbre

Chances are, somebody you know has performed here before. Part of the Timbre group, Barber Shop has housed many new and existing local acts, and regularly partners with schools and interest groups as well to form their weekly set list. Jam out to jazz, funk soul and blues-rock at this cosy whisky bar with classic vinyl covers as their artistic backdrop. Looking for live music in Singapore? Check out these hot spots for good grub, awesome tipples and of course, rocking tunes.

Usually, decadent grub and potent tipples are enough to keep us entertained all night. But that doesn’t mean we won’t hesitate to shamelessly belt along to a good ol’ Bon Jovi classic rolled out by a top-notch live band. From flamboyant rock & rollers worthy of your devil horns to acoustic singer-songwriters where you won’t have to shout during that catch-up, you’ll find these enthralling musicians at these live music venues in Singapore.

McGettigan’s

This Irish pub boasts a pretty long history: the first McGettingan’s Pub opened in Ireland in the 1960s, before moving to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and eventually in Singapore with its first outpost at Clarke Quay. Expect great live entertainment, Irish food, awesome booze deals, live sports screenings, and an overall lively vibe for a no-frills night out.

Wala Wala

Bar bites, beer and live music? If those are the three things you look for when you’re out for a good time, head down to Wala Wala in the permanently-rowdy Holland Village. The venue is known for going all out in the rock department, so be prepared to yell loudly over the drum fills and guitar solos! This establishment is also revered for grooming the likes of Jack & Rai and Shirlyn & The UnXpected, homegrown heroes in the cover band circuit.

Wala Wala, 31 Lorong Mambong, Singapore 277689

Cuba Libre Cafe & Bar

If Latin music makes you heady, make your way to this Cuban cantina. Resident bands Adrenalina and The Marisol’s feisty music energises the room and you are bound to find salsa, bachata and latin dance lovers killing it on the cosy dance floor. Can’t salsa if your life depended on it? No problemo, the good guys at Cuba Libre often hold hour-long workshops for noobs.

Cuba Libre Cafe & Bar, #01-13, Block B River Valley Road, Singapore 179021

Level Up

It’s all fun and games at this retro-arcade bar in Clarke Quay. Come for the ‘80s hangover – colourful neon lights, nostalgic arcade games (hello, Street Fighter) and good ol’ bar games. And setting the mood from Tuesdays to Saturdays are local bands like Wayne & Wayne and Anastasia Francis.

Level Up, 3A River Valley Road, #02-04, Clarke Quay, Singapore 179020

The Beast is equal parts rustic and unpretentious with a hearty selection of Southern American classics like chicken and waffles, freshly baked cornbread, and Mississipi mudpie. On the drinks menu are over 30 types of bourbon whiskies to wash it all down. The casual dining space also holds regular open mic sessions for intrepid warblers with a little Dutch courage.

The Beast, 17 Jalan Klapa, Singapore 199329

Maduro

Dempsey Hill plays background for this listening lounge and bar. Maduro, helmed by the mysterious and musical Mr. P, ought to be on your list for red hot jazz and classical music. Designed to look like the cosy living room of an eclectic, design-savvy friend, Maduro weekly live music sessions include 1819 Tuesdays for the next generation of experimental musicians and Tiara Friday Club, which will see some of the best local chanteuses and crooners working magic with first-call musician counterparts. Read all about Maduro here.

Maduro, 40C Harding Road, Singapore 249548

Harry’s

If you frequently go booze-hunting with your pals, chances are you’ve swung by this longstanding waterhole a couple of times. The Singaporean franchise recently turned 24, and it’s easy to see why it continues to lure both pub punters and music fans. From easy-listening to experimental looping, you’ll find alluring acts in both the brand’s Dempsey Hill and Claymore outlets; expect long nights of songs and swigs.

Harry’s is available at several locations, including Dempsey Hill, Claymore Drive, Cuppage and Marina Bay Link Mall.

Mr Punch Public House

You’d best get here quick after work, especially on a live band Wednesdays and Fridays, if you want a good table. Wanna serenade a trapped audience with your rendition of Highway to Hell? You can on open mic Mondays along with a full band to accompany you.

Mr Punch Public House, 26 Seah Street 188382

Monti

Aside from being an Italian restaurant with a wicked Marina Bay view – and home to the longest brunch in town – Monti is where you’ll find live jazz every evening. Grab a cocktail, and be mesmerised by the likes of jazz bands and extraordinary soloists; big names who have graced the stage here include Melissa Tham and the legendary Jeremy Monteiro.

Lulu’s Lounge

Get intimate at Lulu’s Lounge. Photography: Lulu’s Lounge via Facebook

The new bar and live music venue finds its home in Pan Pacific Hotel, and boasts an aesthetic that’s part-suave, part-grimy. On one end, you’ll spot sleek couches resting against cabinets displaying chic ‘personal belongings’ of Lulu that ooze with class and charm, while on the other, you’ll be mesmerised by raw brick walls tainted by graffiti and ultraviolet scribbles. And to top off the ambience, there’ll be nightly live jazz gigs and top-notch DJ sets spinning everything from hip-hop to dancehall.

Lulu’s Lounge, Pan Pacific Hotel, Singapore, 7 Raffles Boulevard, Singapore 039595

Crazy Elephant

While most other jamming haunts get rowdy with renditions of radio faves, Crazy Elephant (you can’t miss its neon signage displaying an elephant’s butt) sticks to the unwavering tradition of blues. But no, it’s not sad and mopey here; Crazy Elephant features resident bands who infuse blues with good ol’ rock & roll – screeching guitar solos, humming bass lines and – who knows – maybe you’ll even spot some harmonica-howling action here!

Crazy Elephant, #01-03/04 Clarke Quay, 3E River Valley Road, Singapore 179024

Shuffle Bistro Bar

If you do feel like shuffling your music nights and wanna check out something different in Clarke Quay – yes, there are many live music spots here – this bistro provides a platform for emerging Mando-pop (and English) acts that will thrill you with ballads and banter. And aside from the sticky tunes, the adventurous dishes here – think tom yum pasta, crispy pork toast, and Thai-style fish fingers – will keep you glued to your seat.

Five Tapas Bar

Five Tapas Bar is one of Orchard’s most popular live music and drinking spots. Photography: Five Tapas Bar via Facebook

What’s more tempting than the sound of five dollar tipples? The sound of slick, sing-a-long tunes that you can your co-workers can shamelessly ‘karaoke’ along to. The Five franchise stretches through Changi and the CBD, but our personal go-to is the Tapas Bar outlet at Cuppage. Requests are welcome; just don’t ask for anything too out there! And you can enjoy the live music tunage while munching on grub like garlic cockles and beer-battered fish & chips.

Five Tapas Bar, Cuppage Terrace, 25 Cuppage Road, Singapore 229454

OSG Bar

As music appreciators, we can easily imagine referring to live music as “Our Simple Goodness”, and that’s exactly what the moniker of this Suntec City bar stands for. Catered to parched businessfolk looking for a reprieve in the city – OSG even has free Wi-Fi and charging stations – this joint whips up dishes that are far from dreary like lychee curry duck, sake teriyaki chicken, and sautéed udon. Pair all this with impassioned tunage, and you’ll forget all about that dreadful day at work.

OSG Bar, #05-10/11 Suntec City Tower 1, 3 Temasek Boulevard, Singapore 038983

Bob’s Bar

Cuban bands set a romantic vibe at Bob’s Bar at Capella Singapore. Photography: Capella Singapore via Facebook

With its distinctive old-world charm, Bob’s Bar at Capella Singapore feels like a step back in time to the heady days of 1950s Havana. Similarly, the music here is Cuban-inspired, having hosted live music performances by the likes of the King of Swing himself, Jeremy Monteiro and his Latin Jazz Trio. A total treat for the senses.

The Esplanade

This one’s a no-brainer if you constantly take strolls near the Merlion. Whether you’re chilling indoors at the roomy concourse, or sitting on the giant steps facing the skyline at the outdoor theatre, you’re bound to catch a live music act that’s generating buzz at the bay. Besides, The Esplanade is the birthplace of possibly the most important local music festival – Baybeats. And in case you’re still not sold, catching these acts won’t cost you a penny.

The Esplanade, 1 Esplanade Drive, Singapore 038981

Gigs here are free too.

Arguably the most popular of the lot, the Timbre franchise has been known to allure all sorts of gig-hunters from post-work yuppies to after-school undergrads. Why is that? ’Cos you can expect nothing short of quality with its robust sound system, and diversely-curated programmes that feature Top 40s resident bands, classic rockers of yesteryear and even local acts with its Singapore Originals series. Hard Rock Cafe

Jive Talkin’, possibly the best covers band in SG. Photography: Hard Rock Café via Facebook

Having recently undergone a revamp, this jaunty hideout that’s a household name in the rock & roll industry is fresher than ever, yet remains consistent in dishing out a dose of retro that all nostalgia romantics can enjoy.

Hard Rock Cafe, #02/03-01 HPL House, 50 Cuscaden Road, Singapore 249724

Paulaner Brauhaus

As Singapore’s only German microbrewery and restaurant, you can bet that Paulaner Brauhaus has quite the reputation amongst Germany gurus here. But when these folks aren’t stuffing their faces with breaded pork scnitzels and sausage platters topped with sauerkraut, they’re marvelling at the talents of live bands that amp up the vibe every weekday. Feel free to sing along, and let loose like the Germans do!

The Mad Men Attic Bar

It always gets rowdy at The Mad Men Attic Bar. Photography: The Mad Men Attic Bar via Facebook

No, you won’t spot Don Draper at this industrial-chic rooftop bar. But if it’s any consolation, you can drink your sorrows away with Mad Men’s signature drinks like the black forest mojito and sour plum shots. Rockin’ live sets take place here on most nights of the week.

Blu Jaz Café

One our fave performance venues in town. Photography: Blu Jaz Café via Facebook

A joint that needs no introduction amongst jazz junkies and underground punters, this establishment is one reason why the Haji Lane area is so awfully hip. On certain dates – keep track of our parties of the month feature – you can find hip-hop and bass acts setting this spot ablaze. But more frequently, to the delight of jazz connoisseurs, the ground floor hosts free-flowing jazz bands that are open to improv, churning out choons as smooth as audial butter.

Blu Jaz Café, 11 Bali Lane, Singapore 189848

Acid Bar

If there’s one thing we love about this Peranakan Place fixture – aside from being a rowdy hangout to appease our post-work thirst – it’s how it creates opportunity for budding singer-songwriters and cover bands. Instead of sticking to one or two resident bands, Acid Bar features a different performance outfit every day, giving patrons something fresh and musicians a chance to hone their chops.

Senor Taco

Latin grooves liven up this Mexican joint. Photography: Señor Taco FB page

Tacos are one tantalising bar grub we can’t resist, and never fail to sling us into a Mexican mood… which is usually disrupted once we hear yet another rendition of Adele. At this taqueria in the heart of Clarke Quay, however, these loco compadres host their very own resident Latin band, catering to all you amigos out there who’re looking for one spicy fiesta.

90,000 Lively business environment and vibrant social life or why Singapore is the number one choice for business events in Asia

The latest global rankings by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) once again demonstrate that Singapore is the city of choice for large gatherings and conventions in Asia.

Singapore accepts awards for the tenth consecutive year. The city-state, which is considered the financial and legal center of Asia, also has a distinctive distinction in the Top 5 cities in the world for the best business events along with the European ones Vienna, Barcelona, Paris and Berlin.

Singapore’s status as the number one event venue continues to be strengthened through improved budget line numbers. Singapore saw a record 13.2 million visitors from around the world last year. This included 3.2 million business travelers (an increase of 2.6% over 2010), which typically represent about 24% of total visitors. The total amount of spending on business travel also increased, namely by 41% to S $ 5.6 billion. The sphere of organizing business events: holding meetings, initiatives, conferences and exhibitions, the so-called MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) showed growth by 46%.

One of the most significant reasons for Singapore’s long reign as a hub of events is its strategic location in Southeast Asia. Singapore is located just hours from some of the largest emerging markets in the world. China, India, Indonesia and Malaysia, not to mention developed cities and countries such as Hong Kong, Japan and Korea, are within reach. Its internationally renowned Changi Airport has over 6,200 flights per week to over 220 destinations around the world, making Singapore a central focal point for entrepreneurs from around the world.

Singapore Changi Airport Expands Due to Increased Tourist Flow

In addition, Singapore is a global financial center with a government that encourages business and entrepreneurship. All the advantages of starting and doing business in Singapore have convinced many of the largest banks and corporations to establish their regional headquarters here. This makes the city an ideal venue for events as many of the leading companies and executives are already based here and successfully operating.

Singapore also mixes different groups of attractions for all ages, making it an ideal destination for business travelers who come to the city with their families and children. While attending conferences or business meetings, their families can shop along the world famous Orchard Road, or visit a variety of attractions including Marina Bay Sands, Universal Studios, Sentosa Island, and of course the Singapore Flyer. A dynamic mix of business and pleasure, low taxes and a good quality of life of the city-state has convinced many executives who do business in Asia to move to Singapore with their families.

Hurry! “The Ministry of Human Resources of Singapore tightens rules for dependents of Singapore Work Pass holders”

“Our success can be attributed to several factors: a vibrant eco-system that provides business events with exceptional quality, dynamic growth in Asia, and most importantly, the commitment of our partners in the MICE industry,” said Neeta Lachmandas, Assistant Executive Director of the Singapore Tourism Board.

Signs of long-term potential have led to an increase in the number of groups holding events in Singapore, as well as the creation of new company management events to meet the growing demand.Major international events that took place in Singapore for the first time last year included Cruise Shipping Asia, International Air Transport Association (IATA) Global Aviation Human Capital Summit, and Screen Singapore. Singapore has hospitably opened its doors to at least 17 world congresses from 2012 to 2016. There is almost 100% certainty that the city will continue to be marked with an “X” on the Asia event map in the years to come.

Life and Business in Singapore

90,000 “Silent at Home” – the most popular Russian-language music in the world right now

– You usually dodge such questions, but where do you get the most listens from now?

Roma: From USA, Spotify.

Pasha: We are not shirking. It’s embarrassing for us to discuss where we are listened to, where there are more fans. We are simple guys, we all went through the school of the working class.I am still a welder who has had a bit of luck. And Roman is plastering the balcony.

Roma : I’m a plasterer, actually.

Pasha: And the electrician is not on our line (Yegor Shkutko, participant of “Silent at Home” – Ed.).

– Well, this is coquetry! How did your working class career go, then? How long did you work in your specialty?

Roma: I have been working in construction since the age of 16 and have worked fully as a plasterer for six years. Before that, there were all sorts of side jobs: somewhere to throw out the garbage, somewhere to unload the bags.

Pasha: While still at school, I worked as a tiler for three months in practice. Then he was engaged in the installation of elevator equipment. At first I was a foreman, then I was demoted to a worker. When it got really bad, I had to leave from there. When we met Roma and Egor, I got a job as a welder – it was 2017. We quickly became friends and figured out that we like the same things in music.

– How did you start making music?

Roma: When I was in ninth grade, my grandmother bought me an acoustic guitar. I saw her in the yard of friends and went to them to learn to play.

Pasha: In the third grade I went to a music school to study violin. I studied for a year and a half and realized that my parents could not afford to buy a violin. Then I told them I didn’t like it.

– Did you really like it?

Pasha: In general, yes.And then, in the sixth grade, I went to the accordion. I didn’t finish my studies at music school for a year, but I found a bass guitar there. If I sit down to practice, I can remember how to play the accordion. We even played accordion acoustics at a Protestant church at the closing of a festival in Sweden.

– How did you shoot the new video for the track “No Answer”?

Pasha: A week before filming I asked: “Let’s, maybe, without musicians”. To be honest, I still can’t get used to the cameras.I am uncomfortable, I do not know how to behave, it is difficult to abstract away.

– You have a straight mud like “I would just play, I would not give any comments at all, I would not act and I would not like to be famous.”

Roma: This is a perfect world for me too. And, I think, for the boys too. I once dreamed that the group “Silent at Home” was a mystery group. Like Motorama, when they didn’t know anything about them.

Pasha: No, this is not Motorama! I suggested doing it like in Daft Punk, but it was too late.

– Is there no mystery now?

Roma: Well, it turns out, no. Everyone already knows that we come from the working class.

Singapore inspires MICE

The launch of the program was made possible due to the high demand for the Singapore business travel industry. In 2018, the country received more than 2.9 million visitors in the BTMICE segment, which is 12.1% more compared to 2017.

“Together with 29 companies, the Singapore Tourism Board has developed a variety of event formats for corporate groups: dinners, entertainment, thematic tours, trainings, informal meetings – all taking into account the specific needs of MICE clients. Each of the proposals is designed to harmoniously complement the group’s stay in Singapore, taking into account the main goals and objectives of the trip, offering and demonstrating the best that the country has to offer. ” – said Melissa Ou, Deputy Director General of the Singapore Tourism Board.

INSPIRE’s new global program offers an extensive list of events specially designed by experts for small and medium-sized MICE groups from all over the world. The project focuses on the best that Singapore has to offer through 63 unique initiatives grouped into four broad categories: Gastronomy, Entertainment & Nightlife, Themed & Educational Tours, Extraordinary Individual & Team Training .

For specific examples, contributors created original cocktails using herbs and spices from Singapore’s Botanical Garden , a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Groups interested in visiting Singapore’s Silicon Valley will undoubtedly enjoy excursions around the One North Business Park and an exclusive campfire session featuring founders of successful business projects and startups. For those looking to enjoy the beautiful gardens combined with unrivaled views of the city at night from the OCBC Skyway, the Garden Rhapsody colorful light show takes place in the evening at Gardens by the Bay Nature Park.

The Little Big Group and Nikolai Noskov became winners of the Victoria Prize – Culture

MOSCOW, December 3. / TASS /. The Little Big group and musician Nikolai Noskov became winners of the Russian national music award “Victoria” in several nominations at once. The victors were unable to attend the awards ceremony on Thursday at the State Kremlin Palace.

Little Big is recognized as the best pop group. The composition Uno, written by the musicians for the Eurovision Song Contest, became the “Song of the Year”.The video for her won among the music videos.

“When we got in touch with the band, Little Big said,” We certainly respect you a lot, but we [don’t care]. We will not come to any prize, we are punks, “explained Yuri Kostin, co-founder of the prize, head of the GPM-Radio radio holding.” In principle, any other prize would be offended and say: you will not get anything. But we cannot afford it. My friends, this is a well-deserved victory because most of you voted for them. Let’s congratulate them and wish them luck. “

Nikolay Noskov became the best among rock performers, and his show “Live”, which he gave with the support of colleagues after a stroke, was recognized as the concert of the year.

Best of 2020

For the first time, the Victoria Awards ceremony was held without spectators due to the threat of the spread of coronavirus. The participants were placed on stage against the background of an empty hall – as a reminder that the audience needed the artists. “I never went out into a hall in which there would not be a single person. And God forbid that this happens again,” Nikolai Baskov said. The TV version of the show on December 18 will be shown by the Russia-1 channel.

90,000 Coronavirus vaccines from Europe and the US: what is known about them | Coronavirus of a new type SARS-CoV-2 and the COVID-19 pandemic | DW

Good news from Germany and the USA. Apparently, BioNTech and Pfizer will soon be able to register the coronavirus vaccine they have developed in record time. Both firms said on November 18 that they had collected enough data to qualify the clinical trials as tentatively completed. According to their results, the effectiveness of the vaccine reaches 95 percent. According to the first test results published by BioNTech on November 9, the vaccine was more than 90 percent effective. The Independent Data Monitoring Committee (DMC) has declared “no major safety concerns” for the German-American vaccine.

On November 16, the American pharmaceutical company Moderna released information that the vaccine it has developed has passed the third phase of trials involving more than 30,000 volunteers and has shown an efficacy rate of 94.5 percent.

How many COVID-19 vaccines are currently being tested

Thus, BioNTech, Pfizer and Moderna are currently leading in the development of a vaccine against COVID-19, but their competitors are such as the Swedish-British pharmaceutical concern AstraZeneca, as well as companies Sanofi, Sinovac and Johnson & Johnson – most likely, will not be long in coming and will present their own developments in the near future.

Laboratory of the pharmaceutical company BioNTech

According to the WHO, a total of 47 vaccine candidates are currently undergoing clinical trials.10 of them reached the third phase. Meanwhile, in Russia, two vaccines against coronavirus have already received admission: Sputnik V and EpiVacCorona, although many experts believe the tests of these drugs are insufficient.

At the same time, there are still no convincing answers to many questions regarding coronavirus vaccines. For example: how effective are they really? Are there any differences in their use depending on the age of the patients and whether they have chronic diseases?

Is the immunity developed by the body after vaccination preserved for a long time? Does the vaccine prevent complications during the course of the disease, and can it prevent asymptomatic infections?

How much the vaccine will cost, which countries and how much will receive it, is also not clear. However, some questions are already answered today.

How effective are the various coronavirus vaccines?

BioNTech and Pfizer say their candidate vaccine BNT162b2 protects against infection by more than 95 percent. Moderna claims its drug guarantees 94.5 percent COVID-19 protection. This is an unusually high level of efficiency.

For comparison: the effectiveness of influenza vaccination in 2018-2019, according to the Robert Koch Institute, was 21 percent in Germany. This means that vaccination protected only one in five people vaccinated against the disease.

It should be borne in mind that one hundred percent protection against infection is almost impossible. After all, human organisms are very individual. In addition, viruses – for example, the flu virus – tend to constantly change. That is why the composition of the antigens in the influenza vaccine must be changed every year depending on the virus strain.

Still, vaccination significantly reduces the risk of infection. The effectiveness of a particular vaccine directly depends on the concentration of antibodies produced by the body against the pathogen after vaccination. To determine it, scientists conduct randomized controlled trials in which participants are divided into two groups. Members of one of them are given the test vaccine, while others receive a placebo.

Where 95 Percent Effectiveness Comes From

Pfizer and BioNTech conducted Phase III trials on 43,538 volunteers around the world. Participants were vaccinated twice, three weeks apart.

30,000 volunteers participated in the third phase of Moderna’s vaccine trials.

At the same time, people were not deliberately infected with coronavirus, because it goes against ethical standards. However, over time, the infection was detected in 170 volunteers. Of these, 162 were from the placebo group.

In the group of participants who were vaccinated with the candidate vaccine, 95 percent of the volunteers were protected from infection. This means that nine out of ten people who statistically could get the coronavirus did not get it. Thus, by comparing the results of both groups of participants, the researchers estimated the vaccine’s effectiveness at more than 95 percent.

These figures are comparable to the effectiveness of the vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella, which provides immunity to these diseases in 93-99 percent of those vaccinated. As for the new coronavirus vaccine, the indicators of its effectiveness are likely to be adjusted downward during further trials. The third phase of testing is considered complete when a total of 164 cases of infection have been identified, as indicated in the application for its conduct. In this case, all participants in clinical trials will remain under observation for two years.

In comparison, 30,000 people participated in clinical trials of the Moderna vaccine, half of whom received a placebo.Over time, 95 volunteers were diagnosed with coronavirus. 90 of the cases were from the placebo group and only 5 were from those who were injected with the real drug.

Are the new coronavirus vaccines safe?

Independent organizations overseeing new drug trials – in the case of BioNTech / Pfizer, this was the Data Monitoring Committee (DMC), and in the case of Moderna, the Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) – Confirmed that they had “not registered any security threats” with respect to the vaccines they have developed.

The EU has signed a contract with BioNTech and Pfizer for the purchase of up to 300 million doses of vaccine

However, the fact that both drugs have so far not seen any side effects does not guarantee that they will not be identified in the future – when the group test participants will be significantly increased or when the vaccine is given to people with special chronic diseases.

In the case of intramuscular injection of the vaccine, a local reaction at the injection site can always appear. In addition, the immune response, that is, the formation of B cells involved in the production of antibodies and T cells that favor this process, may be associated with fever, chills, muscle pain or headache.

Both candidate vaccines – BNT162b2 from BioNTech and Pfizer and mRNA-1273 from Moderna – belong to a group of vaccines that have not yet had widespread clinical use. Both of them contain a viral molecule – messenger RNA (mRNA), enclosed in a lipid nanoparticle.Once in the body, mRNA enters the cell and begins to synthesize pathogenic-specific antigens that cause an immune response. In other words, the cells of the human body vaccinated with such a vaccine begin to independently produce the elements of the virus.

When will Western coronavirus vaccines be registered?

The procedures for registering a vaccine for mass use in the US and the EU are different. However, intermediate tests should speed up this process. BioNTech and Pfizer have already announced that during the third week of November they are going to file an application with the US Department of Health’s medical regulator FDA for emergency vaccine registration.

Coronavirus molecule under a microscope

But for this it is necessary to monitor the health of the volunteers for at least two months from the moment of their second vaccination. This deadline expires in mid-November. Moderna also announced that it is going to apply for an emergency registration of its drug in the coming weeks.

When BioNTech plans to contact the European Medicines Agency (EMA), which imposes stricter requirements for the registration process for a vaccine for mass use in Europe, is not yet clear. In Germany, the Das Paul-Ehrlich-Institut (Das Paul-Ehrlich-Institut) is responsible for vaccine registration and monitoring in this area.

As part of the accelerated registration, the coronavirus vaccine can most likely be allowed for mass use in the EU as early as this year or at the beginning of 2021.

When will vaccination start in the EU?

For months, the European Commission has been in intensive negotiations with BioNTech and Pfizer to purchase the vaccine. Initially, the EU planned to purchase 300 million doses. The final contract says, however, an order for 200 million doses, with the option to purchase an additional 100 million doses later.

Germany is working to make the COVID-19 vaccine available worldwide

There is information that the European Commission is negotiating the purchase of 160 million doses of vaccine from the Moderna concern. However, at the moment, such a contract has not yet been concluded. In parallel, the EU is preparing contracts for the purchase of 300 million doses of vaccine from AstraZeneca, Sanofi-GSK and Johnson & Johnson.

At the beginning of June, Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands created the so-called Inclusive Vaccine Alliance, which is supposed to ensure vaccine production in different parts of Europe. Thus, the EU wants to ensure that the coronavirus vaccine is available not only to its citizens, but also to residents of poor countries, including in Africa.

However, there is still no concrete answer to the question of how and under what conditions the COVID-19 vaccine will be distributed in the world. After all, most vaccines must be stored at temperatures below 70 degrees Celsius, and this is fraught with serious difficulties in their storage and transportation.
