15 Best Dentist in Singapore to Improve Your Oral Health [2021]

Our team at SBO. sg is committed to being a one-stop avenue to connect local businesses and consumers. We hope that our research efforts can help you save time and money by finding you the best deals without having to search around the vast world-wide-web.

In Singapore, a study found that six in 10 Singaporeans did not have dental check-ups every six months as advised by a dentist in Singapore, and 43 per cent visited a dentist only when they had problems like a toothache.

Also, 56 per cent of them spent less than two minutes a day brushing their teeth and 18 per cent did not brush their teeth twice a day.

If these figures don’t sound alarming, you may be surprised to learn that poor oral health is actually linked to heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

In this post, we’ve gathered all the necessary details and testimonials to derive a list of the 15 best dentist in Singapore to improve your oral health.

Founded in 2007, The Dental Clinic’s team has a combined 113 years of experience in creating winning smiles. They work together to coordinate complex treatments, so you can receive orthodontics (braces), periodontics (gum treatment), prosthodontics (restorations), and oral and maxillofacial surgery in one stop.

Their specialist services include orthognathic surgery, a procedure to correct dental and jaw abnormalities. The clinic also specialises in full mouth reconstruction services.

Using the technology of modern prosthodontics, dental implants, aesthetic and cosmetic dentistry, teeth can be re-made, whitened and reformed, depending on the level of reconstruction required for each individual.

Their support team regularly attends training and their protocols are reviewed by management. They also adhere to infection control and sterilisation guidelines set by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) (USA).

Best Affordable Dentists in Singapore: Good And Kid-Friendly

Bringing your child to the dentist can be a fear-inducing experience, which is why it is important to start their dentist experience early to get them accustomed to the procedures such as teeth cleaning. Regular dental visits can prevent diseases and save you time and money in the long run. Finding good and affordable dentists in Singapore should be on your task list.

It is generally recommended for children to visit the dentist every six months, thus it is important to decide on a good clinic that doesn’t overcharge, is kid-friendly, and you can rely on for the long term.

What to Look for When Choosing a Dentist

It is advisable to choose a dentist that you’re happy to stick with for the long term, to save you the time and trouble of searching for new ones in the future. Here are a few things to take into consideration when choosing a dentist:

  • Environment – You need to look for a dental clinic with a cozy and comfortable environment so your child will feel at ease while getting his teeth cleaned.
  • Reputation – Check reviews and feedback to get an idea of the clinic’s work and how they relate to their patients.
  • Rates – It is wise to research beforehand if the clinic charges within your budget.
  • Location – It is better to have a dentist that is closer to your residence to encourage regular visits.
  • Opening hours – Check their operating hours to see if they are open during your availability.

90,000 Immigration to Singapore. How to find a good dentist in Singapore?

When moving to a new country, the first thing you will encounter is the need to find good doctors, especially a dentist. Today we will try to cover this topic so that a toothache does not overshadow your move to Singapore.

Dental fields in Singapore

Before you start looking for a dentist, decide on a list of the required areas of dentistry. Why? The fact is that each area requires certain training, and a doctor who specializes in filling caries will not always be able to place a crown or bridge, since he has not received training in this area.

List of Dental Areas:

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery : Dental implantation, surgical treatment of wisdom teeth, maxillary surgery, sinus surgery, tooth and cyst extraction.
  • Periodontics : treatment, including surgery, and prevention of periodontal (periodontal tissue) and their pathologies, treatment of the tooth root.
  • Prosthetic Dentistry : Installation of crowns, implants, bridges and veneers.
  • Orthodontics : Installation of curly braces.
  • Pediatric dentistry.
  • Endodontics : Root canal treatment.
  • General Practice : Cleaning and polishing, whitening and restoring tooth enamel.

General practitioners are the most popular, as Singaporeans watch their teeth, regularly visiting the doctor for thorough cleaning and restoration of enamel, as they understand that if you do not pay enough attention to oral care, more serious problems will arise.

How to choose a dentist in Singapore?

The principle of choosing a dentist in Singapore is practically the same as finding a doctor in any other country.

First of all, you need to contact your friends, acquaintances, employees with a request to recommend a doctor.

Second – Internet . Thanks to the World Wide Web and doctors’ directories on official websites (for example,, you can find several doctors of the desired specialization. Then read customer reviews.

Pay particular attention to the work experience of the selected dentists, whether they are members of the Singapore Dental Association. On the website of the Association, you can clarify when and in what area of dentistry the doctor took a refresher course. The Singapore Dental Council requires all dental practitioners to attend a certain number of hours of refresher course to keep doctors up to date on the latest techniques and technologies in their field.

Also, be sure to inquire about the warranties provided by your doctor. If the guarantee for the filling is too short (up to 1 year) or, on the contrary, too long (more than 5 years), it is better to refuse the services of this doctor.

We do not recommend saving on your teeth! Firstly, nearby dental clinics cannot always offer a complete list of dental services, or their level is not high enough. Therefore, it is better to spend some time on the road, but to get to an experienced and competent doctor. The time saved can lead to unforeseen complications and, as a result, additional expenses. Second, cheaper is not always good. Yes, some clinics inflate their prices. This may be due to their location, wide range of dental services and other factors. However, if you need serious treatment, you should not give preference to clinics with suspiciously low prices. Again, this can lead to tooth loss or inflammation, hence additional costs in treating the consequences.

We recommend visiting the clinic. It must comply with the following:
  1. The clinic must be clean and tidy.
  2. The doctor works with an assistant. Due to the complex equipment of a modern dentist’s office, a doctor alone is not always able to cope with it.
  3. Treatment is carried out on a modern dental chair equipped with special portable devices (saliva ejector, vacuum cleaner).
  4. The instruments used are disinfected; it is also practiced to use a set of instruments assigned to one patient. The used syringes for injection are disposable. Almost all medical procedures are carried out after using local anesthesia. Anesthetics are presented in several names, allowing you to choose an anesthetic for pregnant and lactating women, people with diseases of the cardiovascular system, allergy sufferers, etc.
  5. For examination of bone tissue, the condition of teeth, examination of dental canals and roots, a radiovisiograph is used, which in many cases replaces X-rays, respectively, reducing the radiation dose to a minimum.
  6. The client is provided with a price list indicating the costs of the clinic, the cost of anesthesia, dentist services, the price of materials used in the treatment process (drugs, filling material, etc.) and other costs and fees.
  7. The staff of the clinic is polite and friendly.
  8. The presence of additional comfortable conditions (music, broadcast film) is a plus.

Note : Check with the clinic if it works with Medisave. If Medisave is used, you can use it to pay for a portion of the cost of dental surgery.

When you first visit your doctor, pay attention to the following:
  1. A doctor must have all licenses and certificates confirming his professionalism and knowledge of the field in which he practices.
  2. At the request of the client, the dentist explains all the options for solving the problem, indicating the pros and cons. For example, in the absence of a tooth, the doctor should talk about the advantages and disadvantages of three options for this problem: a bridge, a denture, and an implant. After analyzing the information received, the client decides on the method used to solve the problem.
  3. Careful inspection. A conscientious dentist will pay attention not only to the teeth, but also to the tongue, lips, inner surface of the cheeks, palate and even the skin of the client’s face.
  4. At the request of the client, the dentist must show photographs of the procedure, which shows the photograph before and after the procedure. This will allow you to understand what the result will be.

A doctor’s reputation means a lot, particularly in terms of price. It is very difficult to find a doctor with a good reputation and a wide range of specializations, but it is worth spending your time looking for one, since a dentist is chosen once and for many years.

The process is shown fragmentarily in the video (16+).

The video shows that the patient first underwent computed tomography and compiled a digital 3D model of all teeth and jaw, and then a special marking system was applied so that the robot could navigate, so to speak, on the terrain.Apparently, the trajectory of movements was also established by experts in advance, and then the mechanism simply followed the instructions, deviating from the set course by no more than 0.2-0.3 mm (this is the declared accuracy).

The robot is reportedly developed by specialists from Beihang University (full name – Beijing Aviation and Space University) and the Dental Hospital of the Fourth Military Medical University.

It would seem that entrusting such a delicate procedure to a robot is scary – what if he confuses something, suddenly something breaks. But in fact, the opposite is true: Dr. Zhao Yimin from the Dental Hospital of the Fourth Military Medical University told the newspaper in a commentary that the robot allows just to avoid human errors during dental operations. In theory, it should work more cleanly, accurately, and tidily.

In this version, the robot simply followed a set of pre-programmed commands, performing the specified procedures in order and under the supervision of specialists. However, there was still a certain degree of autonomy: the robot adjusted to the patient’s movements – and made adjustments to the trajectory of the instrument. As shown in the video, the woman’s eyes were prudently closed.

A new development is not created for the sake of world records or to say again that China has become the first in some way. No, it solves a practical, pressing problem. The fact is that there is now a shortage of qualified dentists in China. China is not alone in this trouble. Experts warn that in the near future neighboring Hong Kong and Singapore may face a similar problem. Even very high salaries for dentists do not attract enough labor to China. For reference, the average annual salary for a dentist in China is $ 45,992.89 per year, or $ 3,833 per month. According to the “poppy index”, Chinese dentists are in sixth place in the world. Nevertheless, if the country lacks an academic system of high-quality training of specialists in large numbers, then no salary will help. Worse, patients are at risk of poor quality care if insufficiently qualified doctors are recruited in the face of a shortage of staff. So there is one hope for robots.

According to South China Morning Post , in China, about 400 million people need dental implantation. One can imagine how many specialists are required to serve such an army of patients.

Experts say that robotic operations, albeit with minimal human intervention, allow for greater accuracy. Robots can perform complex surgical procedures that would otherwise be unavailable.

In Western countries, robots have been used in surgical operations for a long time. According to a retrospective study of 14 years of similar practice in the United States, 144 patient deaths are associated with the use of machines. But this does not mean that surgical operations using robots are less safe than without their participation, because a certain percentage of mortality is always present. In this case, the number of unsuccessful outcomes represents only a small part of all operations performed by robots.

Interestingly, according to the Oxford University calculation from 2013, orthodontists and prosthetists are included in the list of the safest professions that are least likely to be affected by automation. As you can see, reality refutes the calculations of scientists.

In March 2017, the US Food and Drug Administration approved the use of a robotic system called Yomi from Neocis to assist dentists with dental implants.

Universities in Singapore on grant. The Center for International Programs will provide comprehensive support to fellows and alumni in connection with the

Where Eastern and Western Cultures Intersect – Singapore . For many years, Singapore has been a world leader in both research and education. These conditions are considered the main reasons for getting an education in Singapore.
In addition, the cost of education and living in this country is much lower than, for example, in England and the United States. But be that as it may, and the money saved is not superfluous. For this, there is an excellent opportunity in Singapore to obtain scholarships or grants.

    State funding

The Singapore Ministry of Education cooperates with various higher education institutions, providing funding at different levels of education. Ministry support is received by:
    • Singapore Institute of Technology;
    • Nanyang University of Technology;
    • Nanyang Polytechnic University.
The list of scholarships and programs on the website of the Ministry of Education of Singapore, where international scholarships are presented, is updated regularly, therefore, before going to this country to study, you can monitor this resource.
The application for funding can be submitted as soon as the applicant becomes a student of the educational institution. Therefore, in the event that the scholarship is approved, it will be necessary to sign an agreement, where the student’s obligations will be to work in Singapore for several years after graduation. In addition, the student will need to find a guarantor who, in case of violation of the contract, will pay a kind of penalty.
It is worth remembering that the grants from the ministry are part-cost grants that still make life significantly easier outside their homeland, regardless of where the person came from to study in Singapore.

    Help from companies

Such assistance comes from large companies and corporations interested in specific specialists. Thus, they support talented students who, upon graduation, must also work for the company that provided the opportunity to study for free.
Of course, a student can part with the company if he receives a better offer, but in this case he will have to pay a penalty, which is calculated not by the paid tuition fee, but by the amount that the company will lose if you leave it. Such companies most often cooperate with large universities.
For example, Nanyang Technological University is considered the most tasty morsel of Singaporean universities in terms of international programs. Every year, the educational institution distributes PhD scholarships, which are designed for four years. They are most often obtained by masters or specialists in the field of computer science, information systems and knowledge management.
The amount allocated by the university includes tuition fees, allowances each month, conference expenses (foreign), as well as the start-up capital of the NIP (research project).
The Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA) portal, which is dedicated only to international scholarships, describes all the conditions for participation in the program. It also lists offers and educational institutions. For example, there are only four universities, but the most important ones.
NatSteel is the largest metal recycling company with scholarships and research grants every year. To become their owner, you need to study the best, have an international bachelor’s degree, and, of course, good reviews from scientific leaders.
You can also participate in social work and the life of the university, that is, show the active inclinations of a leader.
At Nanyang Technological University, master’s and / or doctoral scholarships can be obtained for any student, from any country.

    Own fellow

Almost all Singaporean universities offer their own scholarship programs, including international ones. It is enough to choose an educational institution and study the proposed list of proposals. These can be both highly specialized areas and a wide range.

This grant is awarded to those students who wish to continue their scientific activities on the basis of an educational institution.
The main criterion is interest in research and excellent academic results. It is also important to have recommendations from experts evaluating the work done.
This scholarship supports the student for four years of study by fully covering the cost of the course. In addition, it includes an allowance for each month in the amount of two thousand dollars, accommodation and airfare.
Students who have chosen biomedical or physical and technical science can become applicants for a doctoral grant. In addition, this type of scholarship is extended to various colleges within the university.
To participate in the competition, you need to fill out the form that is available on the website of the educational institution. Attention! Applications are now being accepted for doctoral fellowships, which will be awarded in 2015.

    Master MBA

Specialists with experience in the field of management can apply for an international scholarship, which is designed for advanced training. It is also important that this type of scholarship is not combined with any Nanyang Fellows scholarship. Those who would like to start studying in July 2015 must fill out an application no later than 28.02.2015.

    Nanyang Business School

In this institution, an international scholarship is awarded not only for personal academic or leadership merit, but also depending on the financial situation.
Thus, a student with this scholarship is not eligible to work and apply for another scholarship. In addition, the recipient of this grant may be involved in administrative and research work for several hours during the week.
Applications for the competition are open annually from October to March of the new year.

Based on the 5 criteria below, identify your university in Singapore.

If something remains unclear, on the pages of Singaporean universities ask questions to representatives of universities, their job is to answer students’ questions. Or entrust us with the selection of a university and a program in Singapore by ordering a service.

CRITERION 1: Ranking of universities in Singapore by subject area

Universities offer a wide range of technical, science, medical and liberal arts specialties, but the technical professions and IT are the flagship of Singapore’s education system.Humanitarians should take a closer look at the linguistic and philological specialties – in a country where 100% of the population is bilingual, considerable attention is also paid to their development. Future economists will also receive promising education in Singapore.

2 out of six Singaporean public universities were included in the top 15 of the QS 2018 world ranking, which indicates the quality of their programs and a significant contribution to world science.

When choosing a university, look not only at the general rankings, but also the lines occupied by the university by subject area.Ratings are calculated on the basis of many indicators, and the university may not be in the top of the overall ratings, but at the same time lead in the area of interest to you. In this case, he will become a worthy choice and a confident start to your future career.

In addition, we recommend that you study the ranking positions of American and British universities whose campuses are in Singapore, and those universities on whose behalf affiliated Singapore universities issue diplomas. So you can get a diploma from a prestigious university, spending less on study than directly in the United States or Britain.

CRITERION 2: Your educational level and type of institution

In the same way as graduates of schools in Russia and the CIS countries, the majority of Singaporean students cannot immediately go to university. For those wishing to get higher education, there are several options: to study for two years in a junior college or three years in a polytechnic or college of arts. An important point: a junior college diploma is recognized only domestically.

    Pre-university preparation

Students who graduated from colleges and polytechnics can start a professional career or enroll in bachelor’s programs at universities.A polytechnic diploma gives a university student the opportunity to credit the completed modules, shorten the study time and, thereby, reduce tuition fees.

Most polytechnics accept foreigners, and this can be one of the options for preparing for admission to universities in Singapore for Russians. Another option can be a transfer from a university to your homeland after studying there for 1-2.5 years in a similar specialty.

    Types of Singapore universities

Singapore’s higher education institutions that are eligible to award bachelor’s and / or master’s and doctoral degrees include:

Public universities: all universities offer undergraduate programs; all but the Singapore Institute of Technology are graduate and graduate programs.A number of programs have been developed jointly with eminent foreign universities and lead to a double degree.

Private universities, campuses of foreign universities and colleges of higher education organized in conjunction with foreign universities – for example, Rutgers Business School Asia Pacific or INSEAD Asia Campus.

Affiliated Institutions are universities that work on the programs of well-known world universities and award degrees on their behalf, for example, James Cook University Singapore, working on behalf of James Cook University.

Collaborative Colleges, Universities, Foreign Campuses and Affiliated Institutions are an opportunity to obtain a diploma from prestigious American and European universities at significantly more affordable prices.

CRITERION 3: Duration and cost of study

In many universities in Singapore, by analogy with Europe and America, there is a system of credit hours. The academic year is divided into semesters or trimesters.

    Duration of undergraduate programs

To obtain a bachelor’s degree, it is necessary to complete a program lasting 2-4 years, equivalent to 120-180 credit hours, and defend a thesis. In some programs, the training period is reduced to two years if you have a diploma of vocational education or a specialized A-level.

If a student wants to get an honors bachelor’s degree, the study lasts a year longer than with a simple diploma.

    Duration of Master’s programs

You can get a master’s degree after 1-3 years of study and, in most cases, defense of a thesis. The length of study depends on previous education and program, but study programs in Singapore are shorter than research programs. MBA programs last 12-18 months.

Universities have considerable freedom in the formation of the master’s curriculum, and programs with the same name can vary greatly in content, so we recommend very carefully comparing them with each other.

    Quality assurance programs

Programs at accredited Singapore universities meet the quality standards and criteria set by the Singapore Ministry of Education. However, private and foreign educational institutions are not required to comply with these rules. In this case, one can rely only on the authority of a foreign university in its homeland and in the world.

When deciding to study at a foreign university in Singapore, be sure to find out if his diploma is recognized in the countries of interest to you.

For more information about undergraduate and graduate programs, see the guide “How to choose a program at a university in Singapore.”

    Tuition fees

The cost of undergraduate and graduate programs depends on the subject area. As a rule, the cost is indicated for a semester or trimester, less often for credit hours. Be careful when calculating your budget and payments.

As in the rest of the world, the most budgetary programs are in the social sciences and humanities, the most expensive are all laboratory specialties, music, medicine and MBA / DBA.In addition, professional, or educational, programs are cheaper than research programs.

The approximate cost of undergraduate studies in Singapore is:

The approximate cost of studying for a Master’s degree in Singapore is:

    • without state scholarships – 18850 SGD – 92450 SGD / 14140 – 69340 USD per year;
    • with a scholarship – from 17550 – 59950 SGD / 13160 – 44960 USD per year.

In addition to partial government scholarships, there are several other ways to compensate for the cost of master’s programs, especially in research majors, read about this in the section on scholarships.

    Accommodation and other expenses

Every year universities revise tuition fees, but for those who continue, the increase is less significant than for freshmen. In terms of accommodation, according to NUS and QS, the estimated cost of living for students is from 10,000 SGD, or 7,500 USD per year.

In addition to the cost of tuition and accommodation, other obligatory expenses must be included in the budget: air tickets, visa, medical insurance, freshman’s fee, exam fees, transport from the place of residence to the university and travel within the country, membership in student organizations, attending events for students.

Didn’t find the cost of the program you are interested in?

    CRITERION 4: Scholarships

The Singapore Ministry of Education provides international undergraduate and graduate students with grants that partially cover the cost of tuition. The prerequisites for receiving a grant are an offer from the university for admission and the willingness to work in a Singapore company for three years after graduation.Dentists have to work in the country for five years, doctors for six years.

Universities in Singapore also have their own scholarship programs for foreigners that demonstrate high academic achievement and provide a strong scholarship application. The competition for scholarships is very high and your application must be extremely compelling.

Universities offer scholarships of two types: a supplementary scholarship from the Ministry of Education and a separate scholarship for students who do not have a state scholarship. Most scholarships cover tuition fees in part. Lists of programs for which funding is allocated for foreigners are published on the websites of universities in Singapore.

    Other financing options:

    • work at a university or on campus – universities require the approval of the selected vacancy from the program administration and do not encourage work for third-party companies during their studies; students can work no more than 16 hours a week during the academic year and full day during holidays;
    • Seek funding in your country – for example, the government scholarships “Global Education” in Russia.

Also contact the representatives of Singapore universities to find out the details of funding for the program you are interested in.

    CRITERION 5: Entry Level

For admission to universities in Singapore, a school certificate is not enough for Russians and students from the CIS countries – they will need to undergo a one-year training in the University Foundation or A-levels program (by analogy with Britain), study at a Singapore Polytechnic, or apply for a transfer from a university in their country after one – two years of study.

Singapore universities set the level of entrance requirements independently. In the rating universities, the level of requirements for points for language and subject tests is higher, you can find out them on the pages of universities in Singapore. Traditionally, difficulties for Russian-speaking applicants are caused by the requirements for exam scores for English proficiency – TOEFL or IELTS.

Study the entrance requirements on the pages of the programs of universities in Singapore and check the details with the staff of the universities by sending questions directly from the pages of the programs of interest to you.

Watch the video of our founder Yana Drapkina-Uehara about choosing a university abroad.

The UWC South East Asia School (UWCSEA), which opened its doors in 1971, is a member of the UWC movement, with 15 schools and colleges on five continents sharing a common mission. In addition, the international organization UWC annually admits students from all over the world to the IB Diploma program under a grant that covers two years of study and accommodation. We met with Svetlana Kononenko, a student from Russia, who told us in detail about the procedure for obtaining a grant, and also shared her impressions of studying at UWC.

Please tell us a little about yourself. Where have you studied before? Why did you move to Singapore? And how long have you been living here.

I come from the small republic of Adygea, which is located in the south of Russia, and in particular from the city of Maykop. For eleven years I studied at the Adyghe Republican Gymnasium (abbreviated as ARG), as well as many students of the gymnasium I graduated from a music school in the piano class. In addition to my main interest in natural sciences such as biology and ecology, I also paid great attention to languages, rather because of their practical importance. I had no particular difficulties with my native Russian language, however, English was not easy for me. Yes, this is understandable, there was no sufficient practice. Simply put, there was nowhere and no one to talk to. As a student at one of the linguistic centers or language studio, as we call them, I went on a tour ‘Through the Countries of Scandinavia’, in which Sweden was the only representative of Scandinavia, enclosed in a tour ring with the Baltic countries, but this is not the main thing. This trip radically changed my plans for further studies at the university. Then, impressed by the opportunities that opened up for the “motivated students” according to our guide, I clearly decided that I would study abroad. No, not because I was not satisfied with education in Russia, but rather because the university years for me have always been associated with a change of environment and habitual way of life, the search for new friends and interests. Then, since it is necessary to change something, then radically. Thus, I formed a goal to enter a foreign university, but there was no money for this goal. And, as is usually the case, the solution to the problem came suddenly in the form of an international organization called the United World Colleges (abbreviated as UWC), which was rigorously screening candidates for sponsored college locations around the world. After a long selection process, I was nominated for a college in Singapore, which offered me a full scholarship for two years of IB Diploma.

    – Svetlana, tell us in more detail how you were selected for the UWC and how did you get the grant for the program?

The selection process and all requirements are detailed on the website of the national committee ( in Russian and duplicated in English. I’ll tell you briefly from my own experience. The selection itself consisted of 3 stages, where the first one sent a questionnaire with personal information and answers to short essay questions (up to 150 words) and two detailed essays (all documents are filled in English). If the first stage was successful, the candidate was invited to the second round – a Skype interview lasting about 20 minutes. This was, perhaps, my first experience of this type of interview, which, of course, cost a lot of excitement for both me and my mother. However, I must say that the members of the national committee are psychologically well-trained specialists who know how to quickly win over a person. In the end, my interview turned out to be successful, and I was invited to the Moscow office of the national committee on the day of the final selection of candidates. There were many psychological games and tasks aimed at testing leadership skills. Looking back, I understand that no matter how the day spent in the selection ended for me, I would still have learned a lot simply from communicating with talented peers from all over our vast country, and therefore with a clear conscience I left the committee office that evening. …The week of waiting for the results was, perhaps, the most exciting and stressful for all the long years of study at school, perhaps also because at the same time as this selection process was active preparation for the Unified State Exam. But this nervous anticipation was worth it to receive a nomination letter for one of the colleges in the then unknown to me Singapore. The next step was to resolve the financial issue. I knew in advance that scholarships are offered only to those in need, that is, those who are unable to pay off the cost of tuition and college living on their own.The usual stage of consideration of a scholarship application is an assessment of the financial well-being of the family, which is reflected in the cost of apartments, houses, cars and the salaries of the parents. In my case, everything was extremely simple, since of all the property, our family has only a one-room apartment in addition to my mother’s low salary as a shop assistant. So our long-term “financial investment” in my language, music, and other education paid off in one go. And so I was offered a scholarship for 2 years with full coverage of tuition, accommodation, flights and even pocket money. Thus, with great gratitude and the desire to gain knowledge and new ideas, I moved to Singapore for two years to study at the international school UWCSEA East Campus (United World Colleges of South East Asia).

    – Is such a program available to every student? What do you need to do / how to be different in order to pass it?

UWC movement has a long history, which began after the victorious defeat of Nazi Germany by the troops of the USSR and at about the same time with the formation of the United Nations. It was when the minds and consciences of people and especially young people were most vulnerable to the ideas of racial superiority and Nazism. Then one of the ways to prevent the further spread of these same ideas were these international schools, based on the idea of tolerance and the celebration of diversity, but not as a prevention of extremism, but with the aim of educating educated and compassionate generations of young people. Thus, many countries around the world create their own national committees, which are composed of UWC college alumni. It is these people who select students for various colleges and provide financial support for low-income students through donations from philanthropists. To be honest, it still remains a mystery to me by what criteria the selection of applicants is carried out, because knowledge of English is not the main criterion. Rather, preference is given to your views on the challenges of the modern world, understanding of global problems, both social and environmental, your inner desire to be a leader and achieve your goals and, of course, the academic abilities of the candidate. But it is not known which quality or which characteristic has more weight in the selection. For my part, I can say that all my school years I was, as they say in Russia, an excellent student, actively participated in Olympiads and extracurricular activities. However, the program has an age limit, that is, at the time of application, the candidate must be less than 18 years old.

    – How long have you been at UWC? What was the impression during this time?

This is my second year of college.I will not hide the fact that studying here is not easy for me, which, in general, is the fault of English. Although my level of language has grown immeasurably during these one and a half years of being in an English-speaking environment. It is fair to say that IB Diploma is considered one of the two most challenging and intensive programs in the world. In addition to a quality education, UWC cares heavily about developing critical thinking and encouraging students to challenge clichés, stereotypes and preconceived notions. Moreover, the fact of living on campus creates, as it were, an imitation of university life in the United States, Great Britain or Canada, which mentally and physically prepares future students for the next step – entering the university.More importantly, all this talk about cultural diversity is not just hyped phrases to attract more investors, UWC really pays great attention to this issue, creating an atmosphere of understanding and tolerance that easily attracts international students who, in their very, very bring even more variety to campus life, thanks to their own cultural traditions. So, for example, at a Catholic Christmas night, we can easily watch a performance performed by a girl from Ethiopia, or sample the cuisines of different Latin American countries at one of the hostel’s many events. All in all, this culturally diverse environment, coupled with numerous coursework, creates a sense of the fullness of life, in which there is room for both relaxation and hard work.

    – What makes UWC different from your previous school?

Probably the most distinctive feature of UWC is the desire to combine seemingly incompatible ideas of collectivism and individualism in the approach to education. So, on the one hand, paying great attention to the rallying of the class, as a group of students working in a team to achieve a certain goal, say, conducting laboratory work in a chemistry lesson, teachers limit the time to do this or that work and oblige students to work in pairs or in groups, thereby developing a sense of responsibility towards your partner / s.Any innovations are brought up for general discussion through the Student Council (student council). On the other hand, a distinctive part of the program is also a project week, which consists in complete independence in planning a week-long trip to any country in Southeast Asia to carry out your own project. This could be climbing a volcano, teaching fingerprinting (sign language) at a nongovernmental organization, or teaching children first aid at an orphanage.Perhaps this combination of approaches is completely unexpected, but, as you can see, it works with a bang.

90,000 Moses Abramson, dentist. Sublime Himyar and pleated skirts

    Moses Abramson, dentist

Why are all dentists Jewish? .. The question, I must say, is not at all relevant in our time, for it will soon be as difficult to find a Jewish dentist in Moscow as a Jewish reindeer breeder beloved by the unforgettable General Lebed (and a liberal general , of course).

Yet quite recently this question did not seem strange. Of course, there was a fundamental exaggeration in the assertion about the universal Jewishness of dentists – it was enough to look at the list of doctors of any dental clinic to be sure: there were less than half of Jews there. But, on the other hand, we remember very well the famous Jewish secret: if there are so few Jews, why are there so many of them? .. And, in all honesty, among the dentists who were recommended for a private appointment and who were said to their hand is light; among the dental elite, so to speak, the percentage of Jews steadily approached one hundred. And Jews treated Stalin’s teeth (and even managed not to be among the murderers), and Brezhnev was jawed by the most famous dental prosthetist of the same nationality (true, the famous one is famous, but why did Leonid Ilyich speak so indistinctly with this jaw?… There is something for anti-Semites to think about).

You can easily find an inexplicable and passionate love for the profession of a dentist among the Jewish citizens of New York, London, Bukhara, Tashkent, Dushanbe, not to mention Israel … What’s the matter?

Let’s start with a little historical background. Mankind has learned to treat teeth professionally relatively recently. There were, of course, various decoctions and rinses, as well as conspiracies to calm the pain. A pharaoh, who has survived to this day in the form of a mummy, was found to have an inserted, skillfully carved ivory tooth (and it is still unknown when this tooth was ground and inserted: was it not at the time when the Jews were tormented in Egypt?).And yet, the first remedy for a sore tooth was to remove it. Tearing out that is.

And it was not the doctor who tore his teeth, but the barber-barber (he shaved and sheared, he also put leeches and opened the blood). This is what led to a somewhat disdainful attitude towards the craft of a dental doctor (in England, for example, a dentist and a surgeon are still not called “Dr. Smith”, but “Mr. Smith.” Dr. Smith “,” Dr. Hopkins “or” Dr. Rabinowitz “).

And almost until the middle of the last century, the bulk of dentists did not graduate from medical schools and universities, but courses of dentists (something like a medical school). This work was considered not prestigious among doctors, and almost every young man or girl who dreamed of a medical career, aspired to surgery, psychiatry or pediatrics.

Take at least the specific and native Russian conditions for us. In universities with their medical faculties, the percentage rate was rampant, and the Jewish guy had to think more than once: should he go there. But at the dentist courses there was no percentage rate. Overlooked. Plus, the diploma gave the right to live everywhere. Well, let’s not forget that the work of a dentist, especially with a “light hand”, has always been beneficial. When a person has a toothache, when he climbs on a wall, he will not spare any money to get rid of the pain. Everyone knows this, and one of the Jewish curses sounds like this: “So that all your teeth fall out, except one, so that you do not forget about the toothache!”

And dentists have always benefited from this materially.Jews, on the other hand, always prefer jobs that are well paid over jobs that are poorly paid. And this, by the way, does not differ from all the other sons of Adam, except that many Jews do it better.

By the way, do not forget that the work of a dentist is also physically difficult: spend the day in the most uncomfortable positions in order not only to get into someone else’s mouth, but also to repair an extremely uncomfortable tooth under the groans of a strained patient. It requires a lot of concentration and diligence, but it is precisely these qualities that even hardened anti-Semites do not deny the Jews.

In addition, Jews have a so-called “dynastic approach”: if the Pope has a good cause, it will be wiser and better for his son to follow in his footsteps. You won’t be left without a piece of bread and butter at the dental chair. This, by the way, was already understood by the proud sons of the mountains and steppes, who replaced the dentist in Moscow, St. Petersburg and, obviously, not only there.
