In a book published in 1988, Hawking talks about what sooner or later each of us probably thought about: how the Universe appeared, what is the nature of space and time, what are black holes and how superstring theory was born. The author also writes about some mathematical problems, but gives only one formula – E = mc².
More than 10 million copies of this book have been sold over 20 years.

2. The Shortest History of Time
17 years after the release of The Brief History, Stephen Hawking and the American physicist Leonard Mlodinov wrote a sequel. They used the latest data from astronomical laboratories. The authors talk about what black matter and black energy are, whether time travel is possible, what is the past and future of the Universe, and delve deeper into string theory.

3. Theory of everything. From singularity to infinity: the origin and fate of the Universe
This is also the history of the Universe, complemented by stunning illustrations – images of the Hubble Space Telescope. Hawking gives a witty and comprehensible account of the Big Bang and the incessant search for a theory of everything – a unified field theory, the “holy grail of modern physics.” Its appearance, according to the author, will mean the triumph of the human mind.
The book, written in 2006, combines Hawking’s seven lectures.

4. George and the Mysteries of the Universe
Children’s book, co-authored by Hawking with his daughter Lucy and former graduate student, popularizer of science Christoph Galfar.
A funny story about space adventures, which the boy George and his neighbors, the scientist Eric and his daughter Anna get into. The authors are very interesting and accessible to talk about quasars, asteroids, black holes, parallel universes and galaxies.

5. Black holes and young universes
The book, based on Hawking’s lecture at the University of California, was published in 1980. But later it was supplemented and translated into Russian in 2017. This is a collection of 13 essays of the scientist and his extended interview.
The topics are very interesting. For example, how black holes can give life to young universes.

6. Higher Purpose
Together with Leonard Mlodinov, Hawking sings an ode to science. He argues that “it is impossible to prove the non-existence of God, but science makes him optional.” Therefore, the Big Bang can be a consequence of the laws of physics and nothing else.
The book, which describes the essence of M-theory, which unites fundamental interactions, was published in 2010 and became a bestseller in a few days.

7. My brief history. Autobiography
Hawking did not write his autobiography until 2013.The reason is simple – he believed that popularizing science was more important than talking about himself. But the louder his name sounded, the more there were those who wanted to know more about Hawking. And he decided to talk about his illness, family, science.
In this book, the scientist answered even the most uncomfortable and personal questions.

Where does the ichigi from Catherine Deneuve come from? What are the secrets of the Tatar leather mosaic | CULTURE: Person | CULTURE
This woman seems to know everything about leather. She is a People’s Artist and Honored Art Worker of Tatarstan, laureate of the V. Baki Urmanche Nailya Kumysnikova. Nailya Khalitovna told the “AiF – Kazan” correspondent what stockings they sew with a Kazan “wheelbarrow”, from where hearts and other secrets on Tatar boots are encoded in Tatar leather patterns.

How to turn a thread into beads?
It was Nailya Kumysnikova who created ichigi for Catherine Deneuve, who came to Kazan in 2007 for the International Muslim Film Festival.
“For the French actress, I made two pairs of ichigas,” recalls Nailya Khalitovna. “Some are in the classic Tatar style, the second are exquisite silvery-gray suede leather, embroidered with a slightly shimmering silk thread, absolutely seamless and as if laced”.
Nailya Kumysnikova believes that the skill of making ichig is known only in Tatarstan, and no one in the whole world owns this ancient craft. And one of the main secrets of the Ichigs calls the Kazan “wheelbarrow” – a special seam on the skin. This technology allows you to sew pieces of leather in such a way that the seam does not allow moisture to pass through and makes the boots elegant – as if they were embroidered with colored beads. In fact, separate colored circles, similar to beads, are formed by a twisted colored thread.

Kazan skins became famous all over the world in the 19th century. The first ethnographer of the Kazan Tatars Karl Fuchs, travelers who came to the Kazan Territory, wrote about them with admiration.During the times of the Volga Bulgaria, colored leather was traded far beyond the borders of this state. In Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, for example, there is still no word “skin”. There this material is called “Bulgari”. The KFU Museum keeps a leather pillow with the inscription “The highest award of the Industrial Exhibition in Kazan, 1890”. This pillow, decorated with the famous stitching, played the role of a diploma. Now they are presenting diplomas in a frame, but then they gave such pillows. So, the love of leather goods among the Tatarstan people exists, one might say, at the genetic level.

When exactly the first Tatar patterned ichigi appeared, science has not yet established. The oldest ones date back to the 18th century. But scientists suggest that they existed much earlier. Once upon a time, an unknown brilliant master came up with the idea of filling the distance between pieces of leather with a twisted colored thread. Nailya Kumysnikova restored the old sound of this seam.
“I restored it – I think it sounds too pompous,” the master is modest. – But I am very glad that now everyone is embroidering with a large seam – the leather mosaic has acquired its ancient look. Other craftsmen began to use my proposed large seam, everyone learned its capabilities – how it can decorate the product. The work is very time consuming: the embroiderer has been working on a pair of patterned boots for about two weeks ”.
Why are boots called seamless?
Nailya Khalitovna – a theater artist by education – became interested in ichigami by accident. In the 90s, her mother, an actress and teacher, asked to buy her real Tatar boots. There was a large factory in Arsk that produced boots and shoes in the national style. Unfortunately, now only a small workshop is left of this production.

“I bought ichigi in Arsk, gave it to my mother. And she wondered: why are they so tough? – recalls Nailya Kumysnikova. – I studied literature, went to museums and realized: earlier the boots were really different both in the pattern and in the softness of the skin.Indeed, in the old days, both men and women wore ichigi like stockings. The word “ichig” itself consists of the abbreviation “ichke chitek”, and is translated from the Tatar language as “inner boot”. That is, other shoes were always worn over the Ichigs: felt boots or galoshes. Entering the house, a person took off his upper shoes and remained in beautiful, elegant ichigas. ”
Having learned all this, Nailya decided to make boots for her mother herself. I took on a completely new business for myself. I found a sample in the Kamala Theater – there they gave her old ichigi, covered with brown oil paint, for a while. The artist washed them and found a stunning pattern under the paint: a green-red ornament on a brown background. Examining the amazing color of leather, the artist recalled the Italian Renaissance, the ornament of the baroque art of Russia in the 18th century. She realized that the antique look of the leather mosaic could disappear. It needs to be restored.
This is how the famous Kazan seam looks like. The work of Nailya Kumysnikova. Photo: From personal archive / Andrey Titov
“The Kazan seam was not forgotten,” says Nailya Kumysnikova.- In Arsk, girls were taught him from the age of 12. It existed there until 1917, and in 1920 a folk craft factory was opened there, uniting all the embroiderers. ”
But a trick happened: over time, the seam became so small that its main secret – the beads – became invisible, they merged into a thin line. When restoring a seam, the artist and her assistants tried different types of threads, the distance between the stitches. And she achieved the effect when the seam does not just fasten the skin, but plays an independent decorative role in ichiga, as it was before.
The artist has also restored the old technologies of making seamless patterned boots. In fact, the old boots did have a seam, but only one – in front. And there was no seam on the back of the ichigas. So that the boot lay on the leg, the pattern was cut at the back so that a 3D volume was immediately created. Ichigi felt seamless because the seam in front was not visible. Ichig seemed to be composed entirely of patterns.
The home keeper is the bird Umai. The work of Nailya Kumysnikova. Photo: From personal archive / Andrey Titov
What is the two-headed bird singing about?
Tatar patterned boots are not just beautiful shoes, they are a real information portal where all patterns have a certain meaning. They are made in ancient pagan traditions, when ornaments were “texts” and when one person sent another product with a pattern of a certain meaning, and he, having looked, immediately understood what the neighbor wanted to say. Such “speaking” patterns were also created for the Ichigs.
“Girls always ordered a pattern with two hearts,” says Naila. – These are not “Valentines” from Europe, which, as many people think, teaches us everything, but a much more ancient Bulgarian symbol. Hearts are a sign of chastity and integrity. “
A pattern with two horns was always placed on the heels of male and female ichigas. In fact, these are not horns at all, but a family tree on which the deity from the Bulgarian legend the bird Umai sits. The image of a two-headed bird is found not only among the Tatars – among very many peoples, even among the American Indians.
On the heels of male and female ichigas, a pattern depicting a family tree was necessarily placed .. Photo: From personal archive / Andrey Titov
On ichigs, the ornament with the Umai bird guarding the family tree is repeated from bottom to top. This repetition of the same pattern gives confidence that everything in the life of the family will be fine. The two-headed bird is considered the patroness of women in labor, the keeper of the hearth, the house – the most important thing that a person has. All the symbolism of the ancient ichigs is dedicated to the prolongation of the clan. After all, the larger the family, the more likely it is that the clan will not disappear, survive in wars, and prosper, having received more working hands. The value of life, the idea of procreation is embedded in Russian national costumes, and embroidery of Ukrainian towels, and in Uzbek skullcaps – in ornaments of different peoples.
“Perhaps our life has become much more difficult because we forget the wisdom of ancient symbols. Previously, they accompanied a person everywhere, were the amulets of his family and clan. We must save them, ”Nailya Kumysnikova said.
How do they sew with a Kazan “wheelbarrow”?
– Pieces of leather, the whole pattern is cut end-to-end, without seam allowances, they must match perfectly. They sew from the inside out. The distance between the pieces of leather is filled with a colored thread, under which the fastening thread is hidden. The fastening thread is usually waxed, so it does not decay for a long time and the boots live 200 and 300 years. In wet weather, the seam swells and water does not penetrate into the ichiga.
– Colored threads (silk, as well as silver and gold) are wound on a needle, and every three turns create a round ball on the outside. Round stitches are obtained, similar to beads.
– These colored thread rings can be interleaved using up to seven colors. Then this whole line looks like a thin decorative braid.Sometimes it was done in a checkerboard pattern: two wraps of one color and two wraps of another, and then vice versa. The seam allows you to come up with a lot of variations.
